ECC celebrates continued Red Cross calls for blood donors success through program as unique as the patients they help Back in spring 2012, Erie County’s community college students couldn’t take advantage of a New York grant program that allows volunteer firefighters to receive tuition reimbursement in exchange for first responder service. Fast forward to the days leading into 2015, when Erie Community College officials can now boast the state’s highest enrollment numbers under the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York Higher Education Learning Plan. And thanks to this increased attendance—with nearly 150 students registered as of the Fall 2014 semester—ECC can also report over $500,000 in additional student tuition due to opportunities afforded under the FASNY plan. “I am pleased to learn that a notable number of students are taking advantage of the FASNY tuition program and committing themselves to serve their volunteer fire company,” said Erie County Legislator Edward Rath, a leading proponent of the program and its benefits to county residents. “This program is a great benefit for the community, fire departments, ECC and students. I hope that we continue to see an increase in participation and applaud those who have enrolled in the program, earning a quality education while serving those in need.” The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) developed the plan as an incentive for people to serve in volunteer fire service. New York’s volunteer fire departments are currently experiencing a critical need to recruit and retain members. As an incentive for people to serve, FASNY developed the Higher Education Learning Plan (FASNY HELP). This program provides tuition reimbursement to individuals attending community college for up to eighty (80) credit hours and, according to ECC President Jack Quinn, provides area residents yet another way to take advantage of the three-campus college’s career-focused education. “We at ECC are very proud of the successes we’ve experienced through the FASNY program,” said Quinn. “We’re here for the community, so we’re thrilled to offer area residents yet another way to pursue affordable educational opportunities.” According to ECC FASNY Tuition Representative Tom Chmielowiec, the college has taken in approximately $534,603.41—from a combination of FASNY assistance, TAP and PEL grant

monies, and student payment—since the program’s inception in fall 2012. He also reports that 204 students are currently on ECC’s roster to apply for FASNY assistance, and the college plans to welcome more applications as the successes of the program spread across the region. “ECC is very proud and honored to be part of the FASNY Program and to be able to serve our firefighters with the education needs they have,” said Chmielowiec, who reports that students are currently enrolled in 18 of ECC’s FASNY-approved programs like Criminal Justice and Nursing. Under FASNY HELP, studentvolunteers are eligible to have up to 100% of their tuition reimbursed in exchange for maintaining their grades and fulfilling defined service requirements. They must also be a “member in good standing” in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies during both their school years and service payback period. And, if they’re in good standing, they’ll be good firefighters on the job, something Steve DiPasquale—a 39-year member of the North Amherst Volunteer Fire Department—notes as essential to Erie County. “It’s with great pride to know that the volunteer firemen of Erie County have embraced the program, utilized it as it was meant to be and, in the end, ECC has benefitted greatly,” said DiPasquale. “This program has been a win for all of Erie County and I would like to thank everyone that was involved from the beginning and congratulate all on a job well done.” It’s not too late for new students/recruits to take advantage of the HELP grant for the spring semester. As outlined by FASNY, students who meet the requirements, including a 4.0 GPA, are eligible for full reimbursement. Students recording a 3.03.99 GPA receive 85 percent reimbursement and a GPA between 2.0-2.99 earns them 75 percent reimbursement. The grant program also requires that students/volunteers meet the necessary service demands of their fire department. Interested residents can learn more about the program by contacting their local fire department. For information on the program or to simply apply, go online to www.fasny. com/index.php/resources/fasny-help; contact ECC’s Tom Chmielowiec at chmielowiect@ecc.edu; or send e-mail to HELP@fasny.com to the attention of John D’Alessandro, deputy volunteer programs coordinator, or call (855) 367-6933

In honor of Black History Month this February, and in the spirit of Dr. Charles Drew, an African-American surgeon who was the first medical director of the American Red Cross and a modern blood-banking pioneer, eligible donors as diverse as the patients who need their blood donations are encouraged to give blood to ensure a sufficient blood supply. Blood from a donor with a similar ethnic background as that of the patient is less likely to cause complications, particularly for those patients whose chronic conditions require repeated transfusions. Sickle cell disease is one such chronic condition affecting as many as 100,000 people in the United States. Prior to transfusion, blood type and Rh factor are matched between donated blood and the patient in need. In some cases,

additional red cell markers in donated blood must be matched, as well. These markers are best found in blood from donors of a similar ethnicity. With seasonal flu and inclement winter weather preventing many regular donors from giving, the Red Cross urges healthy, eligible donors to make an appointment to donate blood in the coming days and weeks. All blood types are currently needed to help maintain a diverse and sufficient blood supply, especially types O negative, A negative and B negative. To learn more about donating blood and to schedule an appointment, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood. org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-7332767).

While the winter may seem to be continuing endlessly, there is a new bright spot to the season, and that is the area on Abbott Road that has been adorned with brightly lit LED snowflakes decoratively hung from the light poles from Dorrance to Southside Pkwy. Purchased last year and lit for the first time this season, once the streetlights were wired for the snowflakes, the decorative lights are the collaborative efforts of South Buffalo Alive, Councilman Christopher Scanlon and Mercy Hospital. “We were happy to help,” admitted Urlaub, “South Buffalo is just like home and when Chris (Scanlon) mentioned that they were looking for funding for the lights, we thought it was a great idea. We are always looking for ways to help out in the community.” So while the three entities were able to purchase the Abbott lights last year, the lighting of the snowflakes was delayed until

this year when the street lights were properly wired for the new decorations. Once lit, the glistening snowflakes brought a touch of seasonal sparkle to the neighborhood. South Buffalo Alive has previously purchased similar lights for McKinley Parkway and South Park Ave. While the main focus of the organization is the beautification of the area with their cultivating of the trees, shrubs, flowers and other plant life, during the winter months the members busy themselves with adding to the holiday ambiance of the area as they coordinate the installation and removal of the electric snowflakes. They also store and maintain the lights in the warmer seasons. “We changed all the light bulbs in the older snowflakes for South Park and McKinley this year,” state Marge Ryan, President of South Buffalo Alive, “We converted the 30 snowflakes to LED lightbulbs. Each fixture has 96 bulbs so it took quite a bit of time.” The task to change the bulbs was taken on by Marge

Ryan with the assistance of Pat Crowley, Linda Fay and Mary Lee Evans, friends and members of South Buffalo Alive. In total the nearly three thousand new LED bulbs that were changed resulted in brighter and more energy efficient lights in the McKinley – South Park area. A total of 18 new LED snowflakes were purchased for Abbott Rd from Rileigh’s Outdoor Décor in Bethlehem, PA. The same company was used to purchase the lights for South Park and McKinley. Plans are already underway to raise funds for snowflake lights for the Seneca Street area. Once the Seneca St lights are purchased and installed all four major South Buffalo roadways will be decoratively lit each winter season, adding an outdoor luster to our darkest months. Any organization interested in contributing to the Seneca St endeavor can forward donations to South Buffalo Alive at 25 Coolidge Rd, Buffalo 14220 or contact Marge Ryan at 826-3158 for further information.

Art event, music to be featured at Dog Ears Bookstore An art show featuring the work of local artist Fred Fielding will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at Dog Ears Bookstore & Café, 688 Abbott Road, Buffalo. The public is invited to attend the event, which will also feature music by HEARsay, featuring Dave Kane and Michael Miskuly. To view examples of his work, please visit www.fredfieldingfineart. com. “My mother introduced me to pastels when I was young and I have been using them ever since,” Fielding said. “Most of my work is done on sanded paper mounted on foamcore board with an under painting of watermedia or oil. I enjoy observing the landscape and interpreting its moods through composition, value and color.” Light refreshments will be provided during the event. Sampson Needs Some Shade

Wild giraffes who roam the African Savannah thrive there because of the warm temperatures, water, food, sun, and shade. The Buffalo Zoo is committed to providing the same type of environment for their giraffe population, whose newest member, Sampson, will be experiencing all kinds of FOLPDWH FKDQJH LQ KLV ÀUVW year of life. As part of continued improvements to the zoo, there are plans to build a shade structure. Giraffes already have use of an enclosed structure, as well as a large giraffe yard of approximately one-half acre. However, during the zoo’s accreditation process in 2011, it was noted that there was little to no outdoor shade. The Association of Zoo’s and Aquariums (AZA) requested that a shade structure be built to help keep the animals cool and out of the direct sunlight of the summer months. In order to achieve reaccreditation, the Buffalo Zoo needs to install this structure before 2016. Community Papers of WNY, Lamar Outdoor Advertising, and Towne MINI share a commitment to our community and are partnering together to help. You may have noticed several billboards throughout the Buffalo metropolitan area introducing Sampson to his hometown, along with featured articles in all of CPOWNY’s community newspapers. Sampson also graced the cover of WNY Health’s January 2015 edition. Our goal is to bring awareness to the zoo’s conservation efforts, the need

Local sports West Side Rowing Club brings Christmas to family in need West Side Rowing Club (WSRC) continues to support its community through philanthropic efforts, most recently with the Mothers of Alumni Rowers (M.O.A.R.s) group, bringing Christmas to a St. Patrick’s Friary familyin-need with gifts and a special holiday meal. M.O.A.R.s began in 2012 to continue the kinship among WSRC rowing families whose athletes had graduated. Once a month, the group gets together and has an outing, including each year’s seniors’ mothers to continue as volunteers at the Club. This past year for their December philanthropy, the group voted to sponsor a family-in-need for the Christmas holidays. One of M.O.A.R.s founding members, Maryalice Victor, and her mother, Kathie Brinkworth, have been actively involved with

the St. Patrick’s Friary Pantry for many year. “The group jumped at the chance to sponsor a family for the holidays,” Victor said. The donations provided for a Christmas to remember for the family, with presents for each of the six family members and a special holiday dinner. The St. Patrick’s Friary is run by coordinator, Monica Kwiatkowski, and her assistant, Jim Dudziak, under the direction of the Franciscan Friars. For many years, the Pantry has provided support for numerous area families. While delivering the group’s donations, Victor and member Barbara Johnson discovered one of the Pantry volunteers, Betsy Broderick Kurzdorfer, is the great niece of Michael Broderick, the second (and longest serving President) of the West Side Rowing

Club. Kurzdorfer’s father, Thomas, was the son of Joseph Broderick, Michael Broderick’s brother. Broderick’s WSRC legacy includes rowing the first 8-person shell in Buffalo, managing the United States Rowing Team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, being only

the second American to receive a lifetime membership in the Canadian Rowing Association, being enshrined at the National Rowing Hall of Fame in 1983, and having the Broderick Plate named after him, the most prestigious annual award distributed by WSRC.

In the future, M.O.A.R.s intends to sponsor the WSRC “Boat of Hope,” using an old rowing shell to hold donations for area families in need. The hope is that current rowers and families will have an opportunity to participate with M.O.A.R.s, as well as be able to sponsor several additional families through holiday gifts for each family member and a special family Christmas dinner.

The West Side Rowing Club was founded in 1912 with a mission to promote the advancement of the physical, mental, and moral well being of the youth in Buffalo and the surrounding areas. Since 1921, West Side has hosted high school teams. Throughout its 102 years,

West Side has won countless national and international championship events, having sent over 30 athletes to represent the United States at the Olympic Games and Elite World Championships, and advanced hundreds of youth athletes to top collegiate schools and rowing programs across North America. In 2007, the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Fontana Boathouse opened adjacent to the Doc Schaab Boathouse to form the West Side Rowing Club Campus. With two boathouses, over 100 shells, 400 feet of dock, 20,000+ square feet of indoor training space and the only indoor rowing tank in Western New York, the West Side Rowing Campus is the premier rowing and training center in Buffalo and one of the top training centers in the United States.

Canisius and Niagara rivalry extends beyond hardwood By Mike Haim While geography alone does not make for a significant rivalry in the sports world, it does often help. If proximity were the sole criteria for ranking local collegiate rivalries, then Canisius College and the University at Buffalo would be scratching and clawing their way through their occasional meetings on the fields or courts. As it turns out, those two schools don’t generate much hatred for each other, mostly because the schools don’t share a conference affiliation to help drive animosity. On the other

hand, students and alumni of Canisius and Niagara University have been trading barbs for decades, primarily due to a long-term basketball history. The schools have intertwining traditions dating back to the era before those storied Saturday night doubleheaders at Memorial Auditorium. But those legendary weekend outings in the 1950s and 1960s solidified a hoops rivalry that continues to this day with twice-yearly Metro Atlantic conference matchups. In recent years, however, the Canisius-Niagara rivalry has not been limited to hardcourts at facilities named Koessler or Gallagher. The hockey programs at each college have been drawing an increased amount of

attention, and games between the rivals are becoming more anticipated each season. The last 10 years or so have been a sort of Ground Zero for the local hockey programs. After playing at the Division III level since 1980, Canisius moved to Division I competition in 1998, one season after Niagara established its Division I program. In 2003, the schools were joint hosts of the NCAA Frozen Four, setting in motion a flurry of activity which helped grow each program. Canisius became a charter member of Atlantic Hockey when the league formed for the 2003-04 season. Niagara remained a member of College HockeyAmerica until 2009-10, but still often had Canisius on

its schedule. When the Purple Eagles joined Atlantic Hockey for the 2010-11 campaign, it accelerated the importance of games against Canisius and helped foster the natural rivalry. Last weekend, the teams met twice at Dwyer Arena, where Canisius swept the games by 4-1 and 6-4 scores. The results were consistent with each team’s recent play: Canisius (12-8-6, 11-4-5 in Atlantic Hockey) extended its undefeated streak to seven games (6-0-1), its longest stretch since 2000-01, while Niagara (3-19-2, 3-13-2) dropped its sixth straight and has not won in 12 contests (0-10-2). Even though the schools are trending in opposite directions this season, the rivalry has had

its share of significant games in recent years. The schools met in the first round of the 2011 Atlantic Hockey tournament, with Canisius coming out victorious. In February 2013, the teams split a pair of games when Niagara was ranked #15 in the nation. The Purple Eagles held that same ranking a few weeks later, when the Golden Griffins scored a 5-3 win in a head-t0-head matchup in the Atlantic Hockey semifinal; Canisius went on to the NCAA Tournament, where it lost to Quinnipiac in the first round. Last weekend, the games drew decent crowds of 1,013 and 1,302 on the Niagara campus, where capacity is about 1,400. It’s easy to anticipate

potential sellouts of 2,000 when the teams eventually play each other in Canisius’new Harborcenter home next season. To boot, Niagara could turn its fortunes around soon. Before this year, it has never suffered consecutive sub-.500 seasons as a Division I program, so a quick rebound wouldn’t be surprising. Canisius is on the upswing, bolstered by a home facility it can call its own. Once the schools establish equal footing on the ice, there’s no telling how intense the rivalry will become. Who knows? It could even move beyond the traditional one we’ve seen on a wooden floor for decades.

Program to help students, region, toward STEM-focused future million attained in September through NYSUNY’s 2020 Challenge Grant Program and faculty preparation through the Center for Nanotechnology Education and Utilization at Penn State University, ECC’s Nanotechnology AAS degree program is designed to help prepare students from a broad range of disciplines for careers in fields involving nanotechnology, which is engineering at the atomic-length scale, a size range which, until recently, was only available to nature. Being able to engineer such small structures opens the door to a multitude of new opportunities in the fields of electronic and semiconductor fabrication technology, microtechnology labs, material science labs, chemical technology, biotechnology, biopharmaceutical technology, and environmental science. “ECC is proud to be the first local institution to offer a degree in Nanotechnology,” said Rick Washousky, ECC’s Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs, and a driving force in delivering the program

Whether in classrooms, laboratories or the Oval Office of the White House, conversation has persisted about the importance of proper training in science, technology, engineering and math (referred to as STEM) for our nation’s current and future generations of students. Erie Community College recognizes this and, starting with its Spring 2015 semester, is now proud to offer the area’s first two-year degree in Nanotechnology—and serve as Western New York’s leader in STEM-related training. “ECC prides itself on providing affordable, careerfocused education for all of Western New York,” said ECC President Jack Quinn. “But after this education, our students need to transition into sustainable careers. In recent years, STEMrelated job opportunities have multiplied not only across the country, but right here in our Buffalo backyard. We want to prep our students for these opportunities, and this program will help us do that.” Instituted with $5.75

and awarded grant funds to the college. “This new AAS program will further reinforce ECC’s efforts in STEM technology.” Students will study electronic device and circuit behavior, basic chemistry and fabrication techniques used to create micron and submicron scale structures. Techniques covered include reactive ion etching, metallization, thick and thin film deposition and photolithography; and graduates will be able to enter the Western New York job market with the skills necessary for soughtafter positions in such fields as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and university research. The program—which will also involve Genesee Community College students working in shared space with ECC students—was established in response to the various large scale nanotechnology-related projects announced across upstate New York. And with only two other semiconductor manufacturing-related AAS programs in New York State (at Hudson Valley Community College and Schenectady County Community College), this degree program will develop a highly skilled homegrown workforce capable in filling the large number of nanotechnology-related jobs being created across the state. Existing aforementioned AAS degree programs offered in the Capital Region primarily supply their local employers, who themselves still are forced to hire 50 percent of employees out of state. This project will train homegrown employees to work in the nanotechnology sector here in New York State. $3.1 of the NYSUNY grant million was spent on renovations to ECC North Campus’s Bretschger Hall, with the remaining allocation dedicated to equipment used to train both ECC and GCC students.

What to know about winter storm preparedness (NAPSI)—Many homeowners overlook one of the most important things to prepare for when the holiday season rolls around— winter storms. Experts believe homeowners are unprepared for winter storms, putting their families and their home in danger. So while you’re decking the halls for the season, make sure you take the following into consideration and ensure your home is both merry and safe. Major Dangers Associated with Winter Storms Homeowners can face major dangers when winter weather rolls around, including damage from the weight of ice, snow and sleet. In the case of major snowstorms, families can even be trapped in their homes due to blocked or frozen entryways. Cracked or burst water pipes connected to anything from steam and hot water heating to a fire-protection system can be extremely costly. Even after the storm, melting snow can cause major flooding. Tips to Winterize and Protect Your Home Though the list of winter weather dangers runs long, there are 10 easy steps that can ease or prevent these issues, all while creating a safer home environment during emergencies. 1. Install weather stripping. 2. Have your furnace/heating system

serviced at the beginning of each season to ensure it runs properly, and have the filters changed. 3. Move furniture away from vents. 4. Add rock salt and sand to emergency kits to help melt ice on walkways. 5. Install roof-heating cables to prevent ice dams on roofs and gutters. 6. Insulate pipes. 7. Place a cover over attic stairs. 8. Insulate outlets with gasket covers. 9. Invest in an automatic home standby generator, such as those from Generac, that automatically provides power for heat and electricity when there is a power outage. They turn on as soon as the power goes out and stay on until utility power is restored. 10. If you have extra money in your budget, go for attic insulation, which can save as much as 30 percent on heating costs. As a leader in power equipment serving residential, light commercial, industrial and construction markets, Generac’s products are available through a broad network of independent dealers, retailers, wholesalers and equipment rental companies. Basic winterizing for a home can be done for less than $200, but by investing in installations like attic insulation and a Generac home standby generator, you get the best level of protection from winter storms.

Tools and tricks to tackle tough, cold weather yard work

(NAPSI)—The steps you take now to clean up your yard and put it to bed for the next few months can set the tone for a more productive spring. Helpful Hints • Ready your lawn for next year. Prevent weeds by seeding bare patches, but give seed enough time to establish itself before really cold weather sets in. Now can also be the right time to fertilize to give your lawn the nutrients it’ll need to thrive next spring. • Trim dead or diseased limbs. Storm-damaged or lifeless branches can endanger your home and property. Protect trees and shrubs from further damage by using a chain saw to cut cracked, broken, loose or diseased limbs close to the trunk or nearest branch. A cordless pole saw is another option to safely trim high branches without a ladder. • Trim those hedges. Trimming hedges can help them keep their shape until they go dormant. Trim hedge sides at a slight angle, with

the widest part close to ground level and tapering slightly at the tip. This provides maximum sunlight and reduces heavy hedges in the event of storms and wind damage. • Prepare your tools. Clean, sharp and quality tools make it easier to tackle tough yard tasks. Clean caked dirt and debris from shovels and rakes and sharpen chain saws, pole saws and hedge trimmers. Consider new tools that make yard work easier. For example, there’s a new wave of lithium-ion batterypowered tools that make tackling yard work easier than ever. Homeowners no longer have to sacrifice power and convenience with new cordless tools, such as OREGON’s 40V MAX Cordless Tool Systems. They have all the performance of gas-powered tools, minus the hassles, and, because there’s no fuel to spill or toxic emissions, battery-powered tools are the environmentally friendly landscaping choice.

Tifft Nature Preserve celebrated their grand reopening of their Visitor’s Center on Jan 24 and gave nature lovers the opportunity to join in a family sleepover event in the newly expanded facility. Approximately 40 people, the majority of them under the age of 15, joined in the family fun that began with a pizza party and continued on with activities that celebrated nature throughout the evening. Messinger Woods Wildlife Center brought various live birds to Tifft and talked about the owls and crows native to the area. Family members learned about the attributes of the feathered friends and how they hunt, and survive in the wild. Messinger Woods talked about the injured, sick and orphaned animals that they rescue, and how they rehabilitate the animals, allowing them to return to the wild. The young participants in the room were able to identify the screech owl, barn owl and barred owl by the end of the demonstration. A portable planetarium was set up in the community room. Kids and parents walked into the air filled igloo shaped stellar chamber to view constellations that mimicked starry sky patterns at various times of year – showing the seasonal changes of the stars. The families joined together for games and team building fun that included a penguin egg shuffle where an egg had to remain on the participants feet as they raced and shuffled across the floor to the finish line. The plank walk game had groups working together to walk on two ski sized planks in unison to beat the opposing team.

Meghan Dye, experience manager at Tifft, brought her son Aidan, 10, for the evening event. “I love coming to Tifft Nature Preserve,” stated Aidan, “I love nature and it’s always fun to check out what is happening at Tifft.” After a night of fun and movies, the new community room at the facility was used for slumber in the woods as sleeping bags were unfurled in the wooden room amidst two hundred plus wooded acres at Tifft. The morning was met with a beautiful sunrise in the new window rimmed community room – with a gorgeous view of the hills and lake as the visitors awoke - and animals just outside their door. “You can see all types of animals at Tifft Nature Preserve,” stated Kimberly Adriaansen, Program Coordinator at Tifft, “We have recently seen a pack of four coyotes, bald eagles,

snowy owls and plenty of deer.” Winter is a great time to view wildlife at the preserve, with the snow allowing for tracking and identifying of the various animals. Snowshoes are available for your hikes when the depth is at least 6 inches deep. There are several upcoming events at Tifft. Feb 7 is their Nature Maker event when kids 8 and up can make pressed flower Valentine’s Day cards. From Mon to Fri, Feb 16-20, 9am to 4 pm Tifft will hold their daylong Winter Wonders discovery Camp and the science of the season can be explored through hands-on activities, crafts and outdoor exploration. The newly expanded Visitor’s Center can be rented for parties and sleepovers for your next corporate retreat or family event. The 2015 “Old Neighborhood” St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal is John “Noey” Nostrant and he will lead the parade through the historic streets of the Valley and Old First Ward neighborhoods, retracing the original 1913 parade route. “Noey”, who is one of the founding fathers of the “Old Neighborhood” Parade, is a native Old First Ward son who attended St. Brigid’s School and graduated from Bishop Timon High School in 1958. Born on Hamburg Street, he lived at various addresses in the First Ward before moving to Abbott Road as a teenager. Nostrant was part of a small group of individuals who planned the first edition of the parade in 1994. A coowner of McGintys Tavern, which is currently known as Irish Times and located on Swan Street, John continues to support the parade and the Valley Community Association today. This year the parade will be dedicated in memory of four very special people who passed away this past year that were part of the “Old Neighborhood” - Helen Kearns, a lifelong resident of the Valley; Larry Carroll who was born and raised in the Valley and participated in programs at the Valley Community Center growing up; Al Dee, a retired policeman and Valley Senior for many years; and Mike Larusch whose last outing was attending a concert at the Valley’s Buffalo River Fest Park before succumbing to brain cancer. For more information regarding any of the Valley Community Association’s St. Patrick’s Day activities contact Lori at 823-4707 ext. 4 or visit www.thevalleycenter.com. Kelly for Kids Foundation announces recipients Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame Quarterback, Jim Kelly, along with the Board of Directors at the Kelly for Kids Foundation are pleased to announce their 2014 grant recipients (list attached). Organizations were awarded their grants at the eighth annual luncheon, which took place at Ilio DiPaolo’s Restaurant Even though Jim faced a challenging year in 2014 and had to be absent for his own tournament, everyone rallied around him and the Jim Kelly Celebrity Classic was able to achieve another successful year. Through continued support, the Foundation is able to grant over $200,000 to charities in our community. One representative from each organization will be present at the luncheon; we have randomly selected a handful of these organizations to briefly share their story and share what they hope to accomplish in the coming year. The event has become a catalyst in providing local charities the opportunity to get together and become familiar with each other. It not only sets the stage for opportunities but it provides these organizations with the ability to assist and collaborate as a unified force in order to help strengthen their services. When Jim Kelly arrived in Buffalo in 1986, he not only focused on building a winning football team, he was determined to make a difference in the community. He did so by establishing the Kelly for Kids Foundation which is committed to serving disadvantaged and disabled youth in Western New York CPOWNY
