Buffalo Riverworks skating fun open to all By Catherine Miller

COURIER CORRESPONDENT

Open skating and skate and shoot sessions are now available to the public at the Buffalo Riverworks entertainment complex. Located at 359 Ganson Rd, Riverworks is accessible from Fuhrmann Blvd or South Park Ave. If you can’t find it – just look for the giant blue six-pack rising towards the clouds. While Buffalo Riverworks has been publicized as the go-to venue for curling, the near-daily skate and shoot and open skate sessions are bringing the old and young to the silo-city area for good ol’ fashioned winter outdoor fun. Jason and Joshua Carney

stopped by the outdoor ice rink facility on Jan 1 to start the New Year off with some father and son stick handling and skating practice. “We love coming to Riverworks for their skate and shoot sessions,” admitted Jason Carney, “It gives me time to practice hockey techniques with my son. Sometimes my wife and other son will join us for the open skate at the second rink. It’s a great place and there is plenty of room to skate.” If you are in need of a skate rental Steve Cook and Andy Gugliuzza are ready to help you out in the skate shop and to answer any questions you might have regarding the progress of the other features at Riverworks. Admission for

open skate is $5 for ages 11 and up. Ages 10 and under are free. Skate and shoot admission is $10 for ages 11 and up and $5 for ages 10 and under. While the dual rinks are presently the popular feature at Riverworks, look for added amenities at the Riverworks complex to open in the coming months. The interior will boast a unique indoor roller derby rink with bi-level viewing, a brewery, a restaurant with interior and exterior seating, and a large stage area for concerts and various events. The end of summer will see Riverworks completed as a state-of-the-art entertainment facility, perfectly situated on the Buffalo River and just

minutes from downtown Buffalo. Feb 20-22 Riverworks will host the Labatt’s Pond Hockey Tournament for the second year in a row. The three day weekend event will see 142 teams with over 1000 players take to the ice to play more than 200 games of hockey. As in years past the Labatt’s Pond Hockey tournament will prove a great time for the players as well as the spectators. The skating session times for the Riverworks rinks changes daily and times and dates can be found on the Buffalo Riverworks Facebook page or by calling 844-six-pack[844-749-2267].

COURIER CORRESPONDENT

Throughout its history Buffalo has been known as a blue collar city that was built on the sweat and hard work of its residents, many of whom would end their day at a local tavern to unwind and socialize. With recent changes in Buffalo, many of the old pub names have come and gone, but there are a few establishments that have seen a recent rebirth in the re-awakening of Buffalo – and are worth a visit. Winfield’s Pub, with its simple brick exterior, is easy to overlook – but that would be a mistake. Located as 1213 Ridge Rd near Abbott Rd and just steps from where hundreds of steel workers once tread, Winfield’s is easily accessible from the I-90 thruway. Stepping inside its modest décor you find an owner and master chef rolled into one. Chef Tab Daulton, once a top chef with Delaware North, honed his culinary skills throughout the country before coming back to settle down and open Winfield’s Pub in late 2013. Once known as Sage’s Third Base and catering to a post ballgame crowd for decades, Winfield’s Pub

has turned the tables on the basic pub grub once found on premises and has introduced such culinary delights as a lamb burger with cumin and coriander topped with feta cheese, and the occasional roasted pork sandwich special with garlic aioli and caramelized onions. If you are seeking a more traditional meal try their char grilled New York strip steak with garlic mushrooms and rosemary roasted potatoes. Tab’s wife Cherryl watches the front of the house, while his son Thomas heads the bar, serving specialty cocktails made with homemade syrups or an array of great craft beers. Traveling down South Park Ave you will find the newly opened Ballyhoo Links and Drinks in place of the old Malamute at 211 South Park. Now owned and operated by Tim Stevens and his wife Morgan, Ballyhoo is quickly becoming known for specialty sausage links and cocktails. While the Malamute was in business for over 50 years before closing in 2014 it didn’t take Stevens, who has decades of experience in the food and beverage business, long to reopen his comfortable establishment with a unique culinary

twist featuring a variety of sausage links found only at Ballyhoo. “Our most popular menu item is the Korean short rib sausage, followed by our steak house sausage as a runner up and we have a variety of other great items,” stated Morgan Stevens, “we try to keep our menu small as it allows us to keep up the quality and consistency of the menu items.” While at Ballyhoo during the cold winter months try a warm cocktail like a hot buttered rum that will make you forget the cold winds outside the door. Or sample their Tiki cocktails and bring a bit of the tropics up north. A great place to stop before or after a game or a Canalside event, Ballyhoo is easily accessible from downtown and the Southtowns and offers one-of-a-kind food and drink inside a warm comfortable atmosphere. Going even further back in Buffalo history is Ulrich’s Tavern. Opened in 1868 Ulrich’s was known as the oldest bar in Buffalo before shutting its doors in late 2013. That’s when Salvatore Buscaglia and his team stepped in to resurrect the establishment that served Buffalo residents for

nearly 150 years. Situated at 674 Ellicott St near Virginia the well-known saloon watched the growth of Buffalo, continued on through its downward trends and is now reborn in its old-world grandeur under its new ownership and management. With a menu featuring borscht, stuffed artichoke hearts, and puff pastry chicken pot pie the selections include warm German comfort foods with an updated twist. A wide selection of craft and import beers and European and Californian wines add to the enjoyment of the Ulrich’s experience. Don’t underestimate these small, fine establishments that are embedded in Buffalo history and have been recently recreated with a modern environment. While they each serve unique drink specials they are equally impressive in their distinctive culinary categories. Stop in for lunch or dinner and find out why when you are anywhere in the downtown and Southtowns area you are just minutes from a home-away-from-home feel with great food and a friendly face at a traditional Buffalo tavern.

As tragedy strikes twice, a neighborhood responds By Catherine Miller

COURIER CORRESPONDENT

Ellen Diggins Hoffman was raised in South Buffalo. She is a St. Thomas Aquinas and Bishop McMahon Alumni. South Buffalo is where she raised her family, and although she has since moved a few miles away, its where considers home. When misfortune recently fell upon her family, it is also the area that has risen up to assist her with her challenges. In April 2014, Ellen’s husband Bill Hoffman, suffered a life-altering stroke at the age of 59. With Bill’s residual partial paralysis and brain damage Ellen took on the task as his full-time care giver while balancing her job at the Erie County Bar Association. Then, in September, five months after Bill’s stroke, Ellen was diagnosed with intestinal cancer. That’s when things became difficult. Now, on Sunday, Jan 25 an afternoon benefit will be held at the Buffalo Irish Center in support of the Hoffman family in the longtime neighborhood of Ellen Diggins-Hoffman. The event is intended to raise funds for the Hoffman family’s much needed assistance with medical and living expenses as Ellen undergoes treatment for her cancer. The current cancer treatment is limiting Ellen’s ability to work and care for her husband. Bill and Ellen’s four children have assisted where and when they could. Despite all efforts, more

ECC celebrates success through program Back in spring 2012, Erie County’s community college students couldn’t take advantage of a New York grant program that allows volunteer firefighters to receive tuition reimbursement in exchange for first responder service. Fast forward to the days leading into 2015, when Erie Community College officials can now boast the state’s highest enrollment numbers under the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York Higher Education Learning Plan. And thanks to this increased attendance—with nearly 150 students registered as of the Fall 2014 semester—ECC can also report over $500,000 in additional student tuition due to opportunities afforded under the FASNY plan. “I am pleased to learn that a notable number of students are taking advantage of the FASNY tuition program and committing themselves to serve their volunteer fire company,” said Erie County Legislator Edward Rath, a leading proponent of the program and its benefits to county residents. “This program is a great benefit for the community, fire departments, ECC and students. I hope that we continue to see an increase in participation and applaud those who have enrolled in the program, earning a quality education while serving those in need.” The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) developed the plan as an incentive for people to serve in volunteer fire service. New York’s volunteer fire departments are currently experiencing a critical need to recruit and retain members. As an incentive for people to serve, FASNY developed the Higher Education Learning Plan (FASNY HELP). This program provides tuition reimbursement to individuals

attending community college for up to eighty (80) credit hours and, according to ECC President Jack Quinn, provides area residents yet another way to take advantage of the threecampus college’s career-focused education. According to ECC FASNY Tuition Representative Tom Chmielowiec, the college has taken in approximately $534,603.41—from a combination of FASNY assistance, TAP and PEL grant monies, and student payment— since the program’s inception in fall 2012. He also reports that 204 students are currently on ECC’s roster to apply for FASNY assistance, and the college plans to welcome more applications as the successes of the program spread across the region. For information on the program or to simply apply, go online to www.fasny.com/ index.php/resources/fasnyhelp; contact ECC’s Tom Chmielowiec at chmielowiect@ ecc.edu; or send e-mail to HELP@fasny.com to the attention of John D’Alessandro, deputy volunteer programs coordinator, or call (855) 3676933

Local sports Giacobello, Timon anticipate growth in Tigers’ game By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

As one of the few offensive players on the Bishop Timon-St. Jude hockey team that saw significant action last season, Jake Giacobello understood there would be a lot of improvements to make throughout the season. But even though the Tigers lost an enormously talented senior class, Giacobello and friends still have their sights set on a strong postseason run, just like always.

“We’ll be there in the playoffs,” he said, “that’s when it matters.” Giacobello, a captain and one of 11 juniors on the roster, has been a major reason for the early success that Timon has seen. He leads the team with four goals, two on the power play and two more shorthanded. And Timon is unbeaten in the three games in which he has scored. “He provides the majority of our offense,” Tigers coach Gene Overdorf said. “He’s a great leader out there for us.” Timon graduated 14 seniors from last year’s club, including current Division I lacrosse player Connor Fields, who scored 46 goals on the ice last season. The Tigers lost their

top six forwards from last year’s team, but there’s still plenty of talent left for the Tigers. “ We ’ r e s t a r t i n g t o grow,” Giacobello said. “We’re looking better; we’re better in practice and we’re looking good on the ice.” Giacobello was a big part of last season’s strong run, scoring nine goals — including three on the power play — and dishing out 17 assists in 14 games for Bishop Timon. His standout game early came on Jan. 4 when the Tigers posted an impressive 5-2 win over Lancaster at Buffalo State College’s Alumni Arena. He scored twice, including the eventual game-winner late in the first period. But his standout goal that night

came late in the third period when he put the game away with a shorthanded goal with four minutes to play in the game when it looked like the Redskins were primed for a comeback attempt. “Some of those kids were chirping me all game, so it was nice to put one back in their face,” Giacobello said of his game-clinching shorty. In the win over Lancaster, Timon dressed six sophomores — as well as 11 juniors and just three seniors. So the goal is to get better every day for the Tigers and that is exactly what they have done. “I tell them every single practice, we have got to get better every day,” Overdorf said. “And I think we’re improving.”

The European squads are steadily getting better, but By Mike Haim

it would be a major shock to see anyone but the USA and Canada in next Monday’s gold medal game. Thankfully this year, there was no need to wait for a USA-Canada game, as the two countries kicked off the event Monday night in their first-ever meeting in the preliminary round of the tournament. The programs are no strangers to each other in the U18 event: they’ve been the only representatives in the previous seven Gold Medal games (Canada has won four of seven, including the last three). The 2-1 shootout win by the United States before a sellout crowd was an electrifying contest. The USAused an early goal and clinged to a 1-0 lead

until Canada got the equalizer midway through the third period from Sarah Potomak, the leading scorer in last year’s tournament in Budapest. The Americans got their first shootout goal from Jincy Dunne, who was named best defender in the 2014 tourney, then clinched the game when Abby Roque roofed her shot past Canadian netminder Marlene Boissonnault. Any credit for the drama and intensity seen Monday night has to go the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), which oversees the sport’s global competitions. The IIHF rejiggered the tournament’s groupings and placed the top four finishers from last year in one group, enabling the early

battle between the perennial powerhouses. The lofty status of the USA and Canada in the women’s hockey world was perhaps best proven by the modest number of tickets sold for the other three games played Monday. Sweden-Japan drew 186 spectators, the Russia-Czech Republic game attracted a crowd of 341, and the FinlandSwitzerland game a mere 227. On a smaller scale, it really isn’t much different than what we saw here four years ago when Buffalo hosted the men’s World Junior tournament. Back then, if a game didn’t feature the USA or Canada, it wasn’t really much of a draw. And those games involved future NHL talent.

In reality, this tournament is the perfect event at the perfect time. Harborcenter is ideally suited for this competition. The main rink holds a maximum of 1,800 spectators and I’d be shocked if most of the US and Canadian players ever skated before a larger crowd. The last two gold medal games attracted 813 (in Finland in 2013) and 940 last year. In addition, many fans attending this week are being set up to become return customers: next year’s tournament is hosted by nearby St. Catharines, Ontario. There’s really no better way this week to embrace that cross-border warmth. Even when the flags come out. www.twitter.com/mikehaim

Local sports Gawlak delivering as starting guard for Mount Mercy hoops

By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

As a junior, Emily Gawlak has a little bit more responsibility as she steps into the starting lineup for the Mount Mercy Academy girls basketball team. And thus far, she has delivered. After playing a key role last season, Gawlak has been even better this season. She’s been asked to do more and she’s welcomed the challenge. “It’s been challenging, going up against bigger girls and changing my position,” Gawlak said after leading the Magic to a victory in the Matt Colpoys Memorial Tournament on Dec. 23. “But it just builds character. My teammates are always there for me and so far, it’s going well.” Gawlak was at her best in the Colpoys Tournament, which was won by Mercy for a second time in three seasons. She scored 20 points and added nine rebounds and five assists in the 48-33 win over the host Blue Devils. “Emily Gawlak was outstanding, I was proud of the job she did,” Mercy coach John Glose said. “She’s really coming into her own as a junior.” As if the Magic needed more weapons. Gawlak and fellow junior Olivia Balys join seniors Emily Sheehan, Courtney Kaczor, Emily Benes and Maddie O’Neil as the nucleus of a Mercy team that has shown it’s among the best small schools in the area. And stats are no big deal to anyone on the roster; the scoreboard is the main focus

DAN HICKLING

Mercy’s Emily Gawlak (1) had 20 points and nine rebounds in a game against Kenmore West in the Colpoys Tourney on Dec. 23. for everyone involved. “Everyone is working as one on the court; we give each other good open looks,” Gawlak said. “We support everybody; if anybody scores, it’s high-fives all around.”

Mercy won all nine of its games before New Year’s Day and is looking strong in its goal of a repeat state championship. The Magic head into the heart of Monsignor Martin Athletic Association play looking

strong and expecting to get even stronger. “It feels great to be undefeated,” Gawlak said, “but there’s even more to come.” The Kenmore West tournament is also a special event

for Mercy. Colpoys, the greatuncle of Balys, was killed along with four other firefighters in a 1983 propane explosion. This is the 30tth annual tournament in his honor – Mercy has won it six times.

“This tournament is outstanding,” Glose said. “The people at Kenmore West do a great job putting it together. It means a lot to us with Matt Colpoys’ grandniece on the team, it hits home for us, too.”

Thirty students from Immaculata Academy braved the cold, rain, and snow to sleep out for the homeless and to raise $1,100.00 for the Buffalo City Mission. Students setup camp in the back parking lot of the school armed with cardboard boxes, tarps, and sleeping bags in exchange for pledges from family and friends. A campfire was held to help

keep the young ladies warm. This year marks the 12th time the Academy has held the event. Students were not allowed to bring any technology, including cell phones and other everyday conveniences and comforts that they’re used to having in their daily lives.
