The Ys annual campaign ensures that everyone in Western New York has access to vital community programs and resources that support youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Awards were presented at the kickoff event which took place at The Foundry: William A. Rogers Award was presented to the Southtowns Family YMCA for achieving the best collection rate for the 2014 Annual Campaign. (93.2 percent collections) Thomas B. Meyncke Award went to the Niagara Falls Family YMCA for achieving the highest percentage to its 2015 fund raising goal so far. (68.5 percent)

To make a contribution to the Ys Annual Campaign visit ymcabuffaloniagara.org or contact any local YMCA Buffalo Niagara Branch. YMCA Buffalo Niagara, comprised of seven branches,

YMCA Camp Weona, and the YMCA Association office aims to reach and hopefully exceed its goal by the close of the campaign on March 18. Last Year YMCA Buffalo Niagara raised over $677,000

SENECA LIQUORS By Catherine Miller COURIER CORRESPONDENT

The City of Buffalo Common Council took time in January to give recognition to one of the most deserving organizations in our area, Meals on Wheels, with a local service award. Nominated by Councilmember Fontana, the Certificate of Recognition read, “On behalf of The City of Buffalo Common Council, we pay tribute to your extraordinary efforts to enrich the lives of many of our citizens by promoting independent healthy living, while offering nutrition food and a friendly visit. We sincerely appreciate your commitment to our great city.” The Certificate of Recognition was accepted by MOW-WNY President and CEO, Tara A. Ellis, on behalf of all of the dedicated volunteers at Meals on Wheels. Each day more than a thousand area residents donate their time at local Meals on Wheels offices and assist in the preparing, packing, and delivering of meals to nearly four thousand homebound seniors and disabled citizens. They venture out in the cold of

winter and in the heat of summer. They don’t receive a paycheck, and often are overlooked by many for their efforts - so it’s time like these, when they receive a bit of recognition, that they realize their efforts do not go unnoticed. “This recognition from the City is a real honor for Meals on Wheels. We have our roots in the West Side, where we were founded. Our offices are in South Buffalo, and we have approximately half of our client base in the City of Buffalo,” stated Ellis,

FOX T I R E

“So, being recognized by the Common Council for the work that we are doing, helping to keep the homebound healthy, continues to feed the passion of our volunteers and teams! We’re truly pleased that the City sees us as such a critical part of the support network for its citizens.” Meals on Wheels of WNY delivers nearly 900,000 meals each year, and they are in continual need of additional volunteers for their mission. Volunteers can work

one to five days a weeks and mid-day hours are the most needed. People interested in volunteer opportunities can contact Meals on Wheels at 822-2002. Just one hour a day, or a few hours once a week is enough to make a difference in the life of a neighbor. If you wish to assist Meals on Wheels with their mission but can’t volunteer on a regular basis consider partaking in one of their upcoming fundraisers. A flower sale will be held in the spring with the flower pick up occurring just in time for Mother’s Day. Visit their website at mealsonwheels. org beginning in March for further information. The Meals on Wheels Breakfast of Hope will be held on May 20 at 8am. The annual fundraising breakfast is a great opportunity to learn more about the MOW-WNY mission. It offers the chance to discuss the work that is being done in the community and the effect it has had on our seniors and others that would not otherwise be living independently. Those interested in attending the one hour breakfast can contact Lisa Woodring at 822-2002 ext. 27 to RSVP.

Empty bowls and soup – they just seem to fit together. From the days in your mom’s kitchen when you could hear the clinking of dishes and smell Campbell’s tomato soup wharfing through the air after a snowball fight to those cold winter afternoons as an adult when the scent of chicken noodle soup being ladled into a bowl as you walk in the door on a cold February work day was a welcomed treat. A bowl of soup in the cold of winter is the ultimate comfort food. Now, on Sunday, Feb 15, Buffalo will allow these two worlds to collide for a one-ofa-kind Souper-Bowl. Not a “Norwood- wide right” Super Bowl – that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Rather, a “SouperBowl” that blends the most delicious local soups at the “Buffalo’s Soup-fest” with the annual “Empty Bowls” fundraising event that promises to leave you feeling warm, nourished and satisfied

that you have helped your fellow man. The Empty Bowls event, started locally in 2003, is a fundraising event wherein area students and artists craft unique bowls that are sold to raise funds to aid the homeless and hungry in our area. Each bowl is designed by its creator to represent hunger, poverty and homelessness. The bowls, typically ranging from $5 - $10, are unique to the event and make great gifts and houseware items. Held at the Buffalo Convention Center in conjunction with the Buffalo Soup Fest for its second year, the vending of the Empty Bowls helps to raise awareness of the issues of poverty and homelessness in our region. “First, the project serves an immediate need – fighting hunger and homelessness,” stated John Siskar, an advisor at Buffalo State College and one of the initiators in the Buffalo based event, “All the money raised goes directly to the Food Bank of Western New York and Friends of Night People. The $6,040 dollars we raised in 2011

The Empty Bowls project is a collaborative effort between students from over 50 schools, school faculty, artists, musicians, restaurant and business owners that have donated time, money and wares to produce the bowls to be donated to the event. Once inside the Buffalo Soup-fest, wander through the aroma filled convention center and select your favorite soup concoctions from over 40 vendors. A panel of judges will be joining in the sampling and announcing their Soup King – or Queen – winners. Numerous awards will be declared including best spicy, best vegetarian, best seafood and most unique. The attendees will be asked to select their favorite restaurant and declare the “Fan Favorite”. Eddie Ryan’s Irish Pub, Danny’s Buffalo Cuisines, Shannon Pub, Sato Japanese Cuisine and Betty Crockski are just a few of the many vendors you can sample at the event. By Catherine Miller COURIER CORRESPONDENT

You remember that feeling – walking down the hall and running into that really, really good looking guy or girl that you would just stare at as they went by. Sometimes it led to something, and you dated for a bit. Sometimes it was just a nice distraction between algebra and English. And sometimes – for a few – it became something much more. Mary Renzi and Jay Jordan met at SPHS in 1982. Friends Laura Roof and Rick Smardz were planning on going to the sophomore dance together and Rick, a junior, decided it would be great if the four friends could go to the dance together and easily convinced fellow junior Jay to escort Mary to the dance. That was Jay and Mary’s first date. They have been generally inseparable ever since. Jay and Mary married in 1985, before Jay joined the Air Force. Laura and Rick similarly took the plunge, but remained local. Now, both happily married couples from the post-disco decade, each with three children, look back fondly on their days walking the South Park halls, hand in hand. “The best part is that Jay and I had the same friends and we all hung out together,” recalls Mary, “It was just a great time back then.” There have been hundreds of other couples that have similarly been together since their South Park days. In the late 1950’s sophomore Pam Munson agreed to join junior Jack Shanahan at the Seneca show for their first date. Jack lost his job as an usher at the show to accompany her, but apparently it was worth it. Married, with four grown children, Jack and Pam

Shanahan will celebrate 50 years of marriage this year. Recently South Park High School Principal Terry Schuta took notice of how many people in South Buffalo and the surrounding area mention to her that they married their high school sweetheart from South Park. So- she thought – why not celebrate that? On Sat, February 14, from 2 – 4 pm, South Park High School invites couples to celebrate Valentine’s Day in the place where their story first began. As part of the SPHS 100th anniversary celebration South Park wants to celebrate the anniversaries of its sweethearts, young and old. Whether you left the school five years ago or fifty, you are welcome to come back to the SPHS library for an afternoon of socializing, and reminiscing with others that have married and shared a life with your high school sweetheart. Families are invited to join the couples, and if your parents were SPHS darlings but are unable to attend, you are invited to join in the fun and share their story. There will be a photographer on hand to take pictures as you walk hand in hand through your high school once more. Light refreshments will be served and couples are asked to bring in wedding pictures, old high school pictures and anything else they would like to share with other SPHS sweethearts. Visit the school where your love first began, share your stories, and reminisce of a time when you were young enough to enjoy the trouble you occasionally got into. The SPHS Sweetheart Event is just one of the many special events being held this year to commemorate the 100th year of SPHS.

It may be cold outside, but inside the Bishop Timon-St. Jude gym, the Tigers are heating up as the season heads into crunch time. And that could make things even more interesting for the Manhattan Cup playoffs. After a sluggish start to the season, the Tigers have really picked things up on the offensive end, with a balanced attack producing some big-time points in recent games, “We’ve been playing some

excellent basketball,” junior guard Quinton Lamar said. “In the beginning of the season, we were having some problems getting the ball into the net, but now we’re getting the ball around and putting it all together.” After a four-game losing streak — with all four defeats coming to top-notch opponents — the Tigers battled back with three straight impressive wins. In that stretch, Timon averaged 74 points per game, a mark the Tigers had reached just once in a game before the hot streak. “We’re knocking down some shots we weren’t knocking down before,” said sophomore William Lamar, Timon’s stand- are going down for us; we’re major factor in the Tigers’ balanced attack. Returning Allout point guard and Quinton’s starting to play really well.” The Lamar brothers are a Catholic pick Derick Simpson brother. “It feels great that shots

is again Timon’s leading scorer and the Tigers have also gotten strong performances from the other two starters, sharpshooting guard Joe Harrison and steady forward Claudious Modi. Bench contributions from the likes of T.J and Hunter Lancaster, Tyler Ringwood and Patrick Kobis have also been huge for Timon. “We have a good balance of guys and that makes us tough to defend,” Timon coach Joe Mihalics said. “We have four different guys getting 10 to 12 points per game — or maybe 15. Somebody comes through when we need it; it’s been a team effort all year.” The three-game winning streak pushed Timon’s record to 10-8 overall. It included

an impressive home win over perennial power Niagara Falls as well as lopsided wins over Lockport and St. Francis. “The past couple games have been the best of the year,” Mihalics said after a rout of Lockport on the road. “I talked to the kids that when they’re going into the game, I need positive minutes out of them.” Timon hopes to keep its strong momentum heading down the stretch and into the Manhattan Cup playoffs. After a championship game loss a year ago, the Tigers are eying the big prize in 2015. “We started slow but we’re stepping up big-time,” Quinton Lamar said. “We’re getting closer and closer to the playoffs, so we’ll be ready.”

• The first/second grade basketball team at Notre Dame Academy, coached by Ron Soto, lost to Nativity on Saturday. After many missed shots in the first half, Kenny Paolini, Ben Berhalter and Eamon Rosputni each made two baskets. Impressive passing, defense and a few stolen balls kept Nativity players on their toes. • NDA’s first/second grade A team, coached by Greg McOwen, couldn’t get a shot to fall in the early going and found itself down 6-3 to Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament on Saturday. The Saints’ strong defense, led by Molly Denning and Gabriella Jurcevic, opened up the game to allow Kelly Beale to start the fast break and score eight secondhalf points. Joey McOwen scored three points and Joe Swiderski Jr. added two, to lead the Saints to a 13-10

victory. • It was another strong performance for the third grade basketball team (coach Matt Fisher and Bill Strachan) as it defeated Queen of Heaven, 24-16. Scorers for the team included Alex Strachan with 10 points, Matt Sands with eight and Owen Rosputni with six. The team has been improving each game as it has worked hard on its defensive and passing skills in practice. • NDA’s third grade team, coached by Jeanne Griffin and Dan McFarland, lost 17-4 to Nativity. Nativity’s height advantage allowed it to be strong on the offensive boards. NDA had a strong defensive game in the second half but struggled with its offensive game. Scoring a basket for NDA was Patrick Sherrieb and Jeffrey Fredo. • On Friday night at St

go with four rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal. Anthony Snyder, who is always there to set a pick or help defense when needed, had a great game. He had four rebounds, three blocks, two steals, two assists and two points. Brendan Dargavel had two rebounds and a steal and Brody Krombach had two blocks and an assist. They both added to the team’s defense during key moments. Ryan Adamy, who got injured in the first half, pumped up the team from the bench. • On Wednesday, the fifth and sixth grade girls (coached by Jack Hoffstetter) opened the Nativity tournament with a decisive win over the Northern Chautauqua Monarchs, 10-3. The Monarchs could not get by the Notre Dame defense. Anna Schieber, Elisa Coro-

nado and Athena Parisi were outstanding. Hannah Fredo and Aubrey Monaco scored four points each and Anna Schieber added two points. On Saturday, the girls added another win for the week by defeating a strong team in St. Peter and Paul, 16-12. Hannah Fredo and Aubrey Monaco each scored six points, while Kate Ryan and Anna Schieber each scored two. Emma Wilson, Julia Davis, Olivia and Natalie Radwan and Elisa Coronado played a mistakefree game, contributing to the team victory.

Mary’s on the Hill, the NDA fourth grade boys (coached by Greg McOwen) started slow and were behind 11-2 at half time. Ian Macvie kickstarted the Saints with four second-half points and Ben Smith helped on the offensive boards with three second-half rebounds that led to points by Smith, Macvie and Danny Bell. Greg McOwen also started to light up the scoreboard with six of his eight points in the fourth quarter. The Saints ended up winning, 18-16, to go 5-2 on the year. • The fifth grade Saints, coached by Kristie Moore, gave the crowd another exciting game against St. Pete’s after making the long snowy drive to Dunkirk to play it. The boys took a 17-13 lead into the fourth quarter, but St. Pete’s significant height advantage of their top three

players proved to be too tough to defend against, and the Saints lost, 27-23. Joshua Bentkowski played exceptional defense against St. Pete’s best player, who didn’t get a basket until the end of the third quarter. He finished the game with three points, three rebounds, five blocks , four steals and an assist. Billy Paladino ran the point very effectively, scoring seven points and three assists along with his great defense, adding three blocks and three rebounds. Nick Moore came through defending the opponent’s tallest player, who didn’t score until the fourth quarter. Moore scored six points, two assists, four rebounds, three blocks and five steals. Jonah Sherrieb provided a spark offensively, adding four points in second half to

Local sports Total team effort sparks Mercy rollers Mercy basketball to strong, competitive season wins three straight By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

With everyone on the roster playing a significant part, the Mount Mercy Academy bowling team has exceeded expectations this season. With consistency up and down the roster, the Magic have proven to be able to compete with anyone on the schedule. Mercy went toe-to-toe with everyone in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association and remained in the title hunt until the final weeks of the season. “Everyone has been bowl-

ing well, it’s a team thing for us,” Mount Mercy coach Fred Kirisits said. “We don’t have a 180 bowler and then a bunch of 120 bowlers. Everyone is pretty close to each other.” Indeed, Mercy has had strong showings from everyone on the roster. But the Magic do have a standout bowler that’s proven to be one of the MMAA’s best. Senior Susan Thomas ranked fourth in the league in average heading into the final week. She has led an A team that also includes junior Abigail Zdrojewski, sophomores Val Boeck and Kelly Thomas, and freshman Elizabeth Acevedo. The B team has also been strong with a group that includes senior Rachael Howard, junior Angelica Miller, sophomores Sheryl

Little, Micaela Michnik, Emmaline Robinson and Claire Termini and freshman DesTiny Overton. “We’re doing good; we’re doing way better than I thought they would,” Kirisits said. “We’ve had improvement throughout the year and I’m real happy with everybody.” The Magic was in it most of the way in the league. Mount Mercy had a chance at first place heading into the secondto-last week of the season, but those hopes were dashed with a loss to Immaculata on Jan. 29 at Airport Lanes in Cheektowaga. “They’re a good team, they bowled well,” Kirisits said of Immaculata. “But our kids competed and did a great job all season long.”

Heading into that match, the Magic had won four straight and all by 4-0 counts, collecting sweeps of Cardinal O’Hara, Sacred Heart, Nardin and Mount St. Mary. That win over the Sharks on Jan. 15 was especially impressive considering Sacred Heart took three of four against the Magic on Dec. 9. And that provided the steady improvement seen all season long by Mercy, which headed into the final dual meet and the All-Catholic tournament with confidence. “They’ve been doing great,” Kirisits said “Everyone’s doing their part. It’s a team effort and everyone has stepped up when we needed them to. I’m happy with everyone on the team this season.”

National telecast brings out the best for UB Bulls last Friday night for a 10 p.m. game between UB and COLUMNIST division-leading Kent State, a contest which was carried Part of me wants to cringe nationally on ESPN-U. The students turned out in every time I hear about a force, complete with largecollegiate sporting event behead representations of a ing played “under the bright lights” of a national television disparate cast of characters including Bills coach Rex broadcast. Realistically, the lights Ryan, “Home Alone” star aren’t any brighter in an arena Macaulay Culkin, and Abraor stadium when ESPN is ham Lincoln. Reports stated in town (except for that one that students were still flowtime about seven or eight ing in midway through the years ago when UB had to first half, a vast improvement bring in auxiliary lights for a over last fall’s UB-Baylor national football telecast – but football game (incidentally also a national broadcast), I digress). Don’t say anything about when students raced for the the “bright lights myth” to exits by halftime. And then there was the the 5,797 who turned out “mop guy” who got caught By Mike Haim

wiping the floor as a turnover created a fast break towards his end; his mad scramble turned him into a locally trending topic on social media repositories Twitter and Vine. The sideshow was merely window dressing, though: the Bulls drew upon the energy at Alumni Arena and dominated in an 80-55 trouncing. The whole night had a magical feeling to it, as if coach Bobby Hurley’s squad treated the contest as a coming-out party. “It was a great game to be part of,” Hurley said in his post-game comments. “The energy of the crowd and the atmosphere and the way we played defensively was great.” In addition, in a season

which has seen various players take up the leadership torch, another star emerged Friday night in senior forward Xavier Ford. The 6-7 forward, the team’s only four-year member and a front-runner for Sixth Man honors, netted a career-high 25 points in his second start of the season. Toss in his 16-point performance in his first start against Western Michigan three days prior, and it’s easy to see why Ford was named MAC East Division player of the week. But it’s really been a steady, balanced show in Amherst all season: the Bulls are still undefeated (8-0) at home this season and have played a pair of highly competitive road

games against highly-ranked opponents, even holding halftime leads against Kentucky and Wisconsin. On the way, the Bulls have compiled a 14-6 overall record and are 5-3 in the Mid-American Conference; surely they’ve turning many heads after the MAC coaches’ pre-season poll placed them to finish fourth in their six-team division. At this point, a division title isn’t out of the question: the Bulls went into this past Wednesday’s road tilt against Ball State tied for 3rd in the MAC East Division, just one game behind Kent State and Akron. UB still has a road rematch with Kent State remaining (on Feb. 28) and

two games against Akron (on the road this Saturday and at home on Feb. 24). In addition, UB has yet to play Bowling Green, with whom they’re tied; the teams will play on the rural Ohio campus on Feb. 21 and again to close out regular season play on Mar. 6. In less than two seasons, Hurley has already logged an impressive 33-16 record and owns the best winning percentage ever by a UB hoops coach. He appears to be getting the Bulls on track for some remarkable success, along with any “bright lights” that may shine on them along the way.

The Tops Markets on South Park and Bailey that you remember from years past has gotten a fresh new look. The $1.25 million renovation redesigned the store with the Tops customer in mind. Located at 1480 South Park the store celebrates its city proximity and uses images of Buffalo architecture to adorn the interior walls. The produce department was given a modern, updated feel with track lighting, hardwood floors, and wood casings that give the colorful, fresh fruits and vegetables a country market feel and expanded variety. “Our South Park store is located in one of Buffalo’s most historic and unique neighborhoods, and has been a part of the fabric of that community for 43 years,” said Frank Curci, Tops’ chairman, president and CEO. “We are always listening to our customers and neighbors and have made significant changes and improvements based on that feedback.” Some of the changes include increased product variety in their Hispanic and

Jamaican food selections, increased natural, organic and gluten free offerings and an expanded pharmacy, with a convenient sitting area located near the pharmacy and ready-made food items, making waiting for a prescription a bit more comfortable. A new brew market was also introduced which offers an expanded selection of craft beers, ales and ciders. “Knowing we have a diverse community here in South Buffalo, we pledged to make improvements that cater to the needs of our shoppers,” said Pat Golden, store manager at the South Park Ave. Tops. “We are proud to present to our neighbors a store that is even more customized to fit their needs.” Tops will be offering special Grand Re-opening pricing on many of their items during the first few weeks of the re-opening. A great time to check out the changes and maybe sample some of the new products, it’s worth a trip to experience the renovations, and check out the City of Buffalo murals in the front of the store. More than 25 jobs have been created at the South

Park location as a result of the renovation, and hiring is expected to continue throughout the year. In addition to the South Park location, Tops has renovated their 345 Amherst St and the 1770 Broadway Ave stores. Tops Markets has committed an overall $5 million investment in their City of Buffalo locations, including two additional store renovations, and continues to display dedication towards the community. “During the store’s Grand Re-Opening ceremony on January 20, Tops donated Over $2,000 to local community organizations including the Valley Community Association, The Old First Ward Community Association and The Advisory Board for Lovejoy,” stated Kevin Darrington, Tops Chief Operating Officer, “The Tops at South Park and Bailey will continue to support its local community in future efforts including the Check Out Hunger Campaign (to benefit the Food Bank of WNY), Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund Campaign, and fundraisers to benefit Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo.”
