Football players help students with reading and writing The day before their homecoming celebration, most Kenmore West High School varsity football players could be found reading alongside much younger students at Lindbergh, Roosevelt and Holmes elementary schools. The players – including the iconic Blue Devil mascot – provided feedback to the children, who eagerly showcased their most recent writing and reading assignments. This is the third year that Matt O’Malley, a special education teacher and assistant varsity football coach at Kenmore West, has brought the players out to elementary schools to read alongside younger children, and it has become an annual tradition, growing each year. “I think it’s important for the players to read to kids, especially since, when they get older, they are going to be reading to their own children,” O’Malley said. It was a coincidence the event fell the day before homecoming, but that didn’t deter the players from taking part. They started at Lindbergh Elementary School, where they not only read with the children but engaged them in a pick-up football game too. At Roosevelt, they worked alongside struggling readers who

Trent White, left, and Gavin Sloan, both Kenmore West High School varsity football players, read alongside a student at Holmes Elementary School. have been working hard to advance their literacy skills. Finally, they finished the day with two classroom visits at Holmes. The younger students were excited to be paired with the players, who wore their jerseys and were accompanied by the Blue Devil mascot. The first year, O’Malley only took his players to one class at one school, but the program has expanded over the past two years when it was so wellreceived. “I didn’t know what to expect at first but it

surprised me in a very positive way,” O’Malley said. “These kids do a fantastic job. When we put them in a position to be successful, they do it.” O’Malley expressed his appreciation toward Brett Banker, district athletics director, and Rich Harris, head coach, for their support for the program. The activity accomplishes a lot. For one thing, it shows the elementary school students that the players on the field are also students in the classroom. It is also a learning experience for the players. “It is important for the

younger students to see our athletes in class,” O’Malley said. “But it’s not just important for the younger kids. We are trying to mold these young men who are probably going to be fathers at some point.” And as for the younger students, it gets them excited about what they are reading and writing in class. “To have a different kind of audience is really exciting for them,” said Rita Klipfell, a teacher at Holmes Elementary School.

Holiday shopping can be stressful. With long lists and a limited budget, sometimes its tough to find the perfect gift for everyone. Avoid the chaotic crowds and find one-of-a-kind gifts at the first annual Crazy Craftin’ Chicks Holiday Craft Bazaar. This bazaar and craft show will feature more than 40 local crafters and vendors. Ran by sisters Jessica Harding and Amanda Wozniak, this event will offer many unique, handmade items that will make great gifts for this holiday season. Harding and Wozniak are included on the list of crafters for the show. Harding specializes in hand-painted Christmas bulbs, ranging in themes, as well as handmade ankle bracelets. Wozniak’s table will feature a variety of items that would make great gifts for a boss, teacher, coworker or friend. Wozniak said her crafts would also make great stocking stuffers. One specialty item she makes is snowmen made of hot chocolate mixes. All of their crafts are fairly priced and perfect for a shopper on a budget. Other crafts that can be found at the event will be wreaths, crochet items, gourmet cupcakes, homemade candles, ceramics, baby items and clothing pieces and more. While crafting is something Harding and Wozniak enjoy, it’s not the only reason they decided to host this bazaar.

“We hope to give back to the community,” said Harding. “We wanted to give the community something to look forward to and to give back to local crafters and small businesses. I just want it to be good for everyone.” Harding and Wozniak are encouraging residents to come out to the bazaar and support the small businesses of the community, while also getting great gifts. “We decided on this time of year because Christmas is our favorite holiday and we thought it was a good opportunity to bring attention to small businesses,” Harding said. “I think when you shop at something like this, you’re getting a more unique variety of items. You’re not getting the same factory made item that you and 30 other people bought for your loved ones.” The bazaar will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at Rescue Fire Hall, 1241 Strad Ave., North Tonawanda. Admission is $2. Shoppers will also have the opportunity to participate in a basket auction, while enjoying food and drinks throughout the afternoon. Harding and Wozniak hope to make this an annual holiday event. “We want to bring it back every year to the community so people can look forward to this as much as we’ve looked forward to our favorite craft shows in the past.”

Edison Elementary School takes part in Read for the Record Students across grade levels at Edison Elementary School took part in the national Read for the Record campaign with a final count of 375 students who were read the Rosemary Wells children’s book “Bunny Cakes.” Read for the Record is a national campaign by Jumpstart, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving pre-school education. Each year, children all across the country are read the same book on the same day, raising awareness of the importance of reading to young children beginning at a very early age and raising money for early childhood education programs. Schools report back to Jumpstart on how many children were read the book and a final tally is announced. In 2013, nearly 2.5 million children read “Otis” by author Loren Long, once again breaking the world record. It is an endeavor that is important to faculty and staff at Edison Elementary School, and this is the fifth year the school has participated in Read for the Record. The school goes beyond simply reading the book

along with other district administrators, teachers, and community members. It’s an enjoyable activity for students of all ages, according to Gretchen Seibert, librarian at Edison Elementary who coordinated the schoolwide effort.

“There is something about reading aloud to kids. It doesn’t matter if they are five years old or getting ready for middle school. They just like to be read to,” Seibert said. The final national count has not yet been announced.

Black Friday shopping makes for interesting crowd

Being the shopoholic I am, every year it is mandatory that I go out for Black Friday. It’s been somewhat of a controversial topic that many stores chose to be open for Thanksgiving, but I decided to venture out on Thursday anyway. The first place I went to was the Walmart in Hamburg. I didn’t really have anything specific in mind I was shopping for. A friend and I mainly wanted to go for people watching purposes. And what better place to people watch than Walmart? The parking lot was an ab-

solute zoo, indicating that the vast majority of local people didn’t mind the stores being open on the holiday. Somehow we managed to get lucky and found a spot right up front. However, only one entrance was open, and it was on the complete opposite side of where we parked. At the entrance, we found metal barriers lined up as if we were at Darien Lake waiting to ride the Superman. When we got into the store, it was a madhouse. Everyone was in a hurry. My friend and I decided to check out the cheap DVDs

to see if there was anything good. We went to the home and garden section where we were immediately were placed in a line seemingly a mile long. After several minutes in line, my friend turns to me and whispers, “Do you smell weed?” I sniff, and I vaguely notice it as well, shrugging my shoulders and nodding to the three guys in front of us. A minute later, a woman comes storming into line behind us. She immediately goes on a profanity laced tirade that I

would most definitely be fired for printing. From what I could understand, she was upset that an employee told her to wait in the wrong line for the last hour and now she might not get the $30 copy of Grand Theft Auto V for her son. My friend and I nod our heads sympathetically to her. It’s at that point that I notice the smell of weed has gotten significantly stronger. I turn around to see what the guys in front of us were doing, and lo and behold, they are smoking a blunt in the middle of Walmart.

I nudge my friend in amused disbelief to point it out, and I regret it as he is absolutely horrified. The woman behind us is still going off about being in the wrong line, now threatening to “put her size 8 boot in that employee’s”...rear. She also alludes to shanking people to get her hands on the game. The guys continue to light up for the next 15 minutes we’re in line while the angry woman continues to rant. I can’t help but smile at the stark contrast between the people who surround us.

When we get to the DVD/ video game display, the woman almost seems disappointed that Walmart still has many copies of the game. Now, her boot will only be used for walking. After browsing the DVDs and a few other departments, we waited in the checkout line with our finds for an additional 45 minutes. While the trip was a long one, I don’t regret going out on Thanksgiving, and I will likely continue to do so for the near future. I mean, who knows what I might see next year?

Promoting awareness of domestic violence

The Zonta Club of Kenmore will be promoting awareness of domestic violence through participation in the 16 days of activism thorough Dec. 10. A little over a year ago Zonta International took up this initiative, but this is the first year that Zonta of Kenmore has participated. The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness of the different types of violence against women. There will be postings on the website of the Zonta Club of Kenmore each day during the campaign

providing facts about the extent of domestic violence and about available resources. This will help to get the word out that, unfortunately, the problem of domestic violence has no age, race, religious or cultural restrictions. There will also be a collection at the Kenmore Library of used cell phones which will be refurbished and sold with the proceeds being used by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence to support programs that help end violence in the home.

The Zonta Club of Kenmore will sponsor a pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Dec. 7 at Zebb’s Restaurant at 2875 Niagara Falls Blvd. in Amherst and donate the proceeds to a program that fights domestic violence. To purchase tickets to this event, contact 860-7029. Zonta International is a worldwide service organization working together to advance the status of women. For more information on the Zonta Club of Kenmore visit www. zontaclubofkenmore.org.

YWCA hosts KidBiz during Winter Walk The YWCA Tonawandas will host Winter Walk KidBiz from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the YWCA Tonawandas, 49 Tremont St., North Tonawanda. KidBiz is a unique market place for young entrepreneurs to sell handmade

crafts, used toys and books, homemade baked goods and other novelties. The only cost is a $1 business permit. It’s a great opportunity for kids to own their own mini store and earn extra cash. Parents of 8 to 13 year old entrepreneurs who are

interested should contact Emily McGrath at 6925580. They will receive an online training that teaches kids the basics of the retail business: how to properly serve customers, profit and loss principles, how to price merchandise and how to market their goods.

ishing the ones you love,” Copps said. “There are so many great roles in this musical, our students will have every opportunity to shine.” Two students sure to shine are Buffalo resident Allie Fairbanks and Niagara Falls resident Britini D’Angelo. Fairbanks and D’Angelo garnered praise for their roles in last year’s production of “Kiss Me, Kate” and return to the stage in the roles of sister duo Betty and Judy Haynes. They will be joined by Thomas Draper, a senior from Nichols School, playing Bob Wallace; and Ben Wojick, a junior from St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, playing Phil Davis. Choreography will be presented by Kristy Schuppie Cavanagh. Tim Wells, the school’s music teacher, returns as the music and vocal director. Mount St. Mary Academy has a long-standing tradition of musical theater excellence. Previous productions have received critical acclaim, including the student production of “Bye Bye Birdie,” which received Kenny awards for Best Supporting Actor and Best Choreography. To purchase tickets or for information on group rates, call the school at 877-1358. Tickets are priced at $10 for adults and students, and $8 for children under 14 and senior citizens.

Arcade Academy is great Arcade Academy is one of the most exciting happenings at St. John the Baptist School in Kenmore. Third to fifth grade students are participating in this enrichment program based on the viral video, Caine’s Arcade. With more than 4.4 million hits on You-Tube, the video follows a young boy who creates an arcade out of cardboard boxes and other recycled materials at his father’s used auto parts store. The goal of Arcade Academy is for the students to work in pairs to create their own arcade games which will be showcased at a school arcade. Finalists will bring their creations to a symposium held at St. Joseph Collegiate Institute this December. Students use various cardboard boxes, containers, and tape to create their very own arcade game administered by fifth grade teachers Mary Mietlicki and Johanna MacDonald. The STREAM initiative is an outgrowth of STEM education, adding “religion and art” to the original core focus of integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics curriculum into students’ learning. Both Mietlicki and MacDonald attended training this past summer to ready themselves for the program’s demands. Mietlicki states, “Johanna and I like to try to incorporate 4 C’s

Pictured lefto to right: Emilia MacDonald, Sarah Covelli, and Emma Schaus. (creativity, collaboration, communication, critical thinking) into our classrooms as much as possible, but we love that this program is entirely 100 percent dedicated to allowing students to develop these skills.” Students must stretch their creativity muscles and really figure out how to use ONLY recycled materials in order to create arcade games. “The immediate reaction of the kids was “how will we make the arcade games work without electricity,” states Mietlicki. “But even after the first session, it was easy to see that these kids are way more creative

than any of us are.” She adds that one of the greatest challenges has been keeping up with the demands of tape, chuckling, “You would never believe how much tape 10-year olds can go through when trying to put together cardboard arcade games. Tape is definitely a new ‘wish-list’ item at St. John’s” Arcade Academy is a prime example of the critical thinking that is being fostered by the faculty with an emphasis in the sciences and math, preparing the students of today for the world of tomorrow.

Pappas sworn in as Alderman At Large, council discusses mayoral candidates By Kori Sciandra NT SUN EDITOR

After being elected to serve as Alderman At Large for the North Tonawanda Common Council, as a result of a special election held in November, Arthur G. Pappas took his seat Tuesday, as he was sworn into office by Mayor Rob Ortt. Pappas, who filled the vacant council seat left behind from the late Robert Clark, was accompanied by his wife and two sons as he took his Oath of Office. Pappas is known in the community as a dedicated public servant. His involvement with the North

Tonawanda Board of Education, which he formerly served on, has provided him with a solid foundation to help him serve the community to the best of his ability. Pappas was thankful for this opportunity. “I am looking forward to working with everyone...Looking forward to working with the whole council. I would like to thank the voters for their support, and my family,” said Pappas. Following the Oath of Office ceremony Common Council President, Russ Rizzo led the meeting with a light agenda, during which the council approved various traffic safety recommendations.

North Tonawanda is expected to head into 2015 with a new leader. All mayoral applicants were accepted for review, there are a total of 10. The council went into executive session Tuesday, following the council meeting. However, he made no guarantee the council will have made a decision by then. The council is hoping to find the right candidate by the end of the year and a public announcement will be made to inform residents.

2014-15 Wrestling Preview Warriors wrestling hopes depth helps in quest for division championship By Dave Ricci

SPORTS REPORTER

It’s been a while since Tonawanda wrestling has been able to hoist a championship banner as a team. That’s something the Warriors are looking to change this season. Always among the toughest and most talented wrestlers in all of Western New York, in recent seasons the biggest challenge for the Warriors has been having enough bodies to field a full roster in meets. As Tonawanda heads into the 2014-15 season, it appears that it will once again have quantity as well HEAD COACH: as a quality. “We have bodies,” said Dave Nedell varsity coach David Nedell. “We have the opportunity to get points (each match) and COACH’S OUTLOOK: not give three points away (due to forfeit).” The combination of other “I think they realize that teams in ECIC III battling we’re quite serious about low numbers and Alden graduating a strong core of our expectations towards its seniors makes Tonawanda a legitimate threat for them.” the league title. Leading the way for the Warriors will be seniors Cody McGregor and Jake 2013-14 RECORD: Logan. Logan will wrestle at 145 9-6 (5-2 league) and 152 pounds. McGregor, Tonawanda’s all-time wins leader, is a three-time state qualifier and needs just 11 KEY RETURNERS: wins to reach the milestone mark of 200. as a seventh grader. Last season was definitely a learning experience for the gritty young Braddell, but he without question has the making of being something

special on the mat. Always extremely tough in the middle and lightweights, the Warriors are excited about the numbers in their heavyweights as Rick

Tardick (189), Brandon Geercken (220/285) and Wisdom DeValle (189/220) give them a few options in that bracket. “It’s real exciting,” said Josh Bukowski. “Because we have a chance to win a title and hang a banner on the gym wall. It hasn’t been done in a while. It’s just nice because there is no better feeling than winning a title.” Nedell said he is also fortunate to have former Warrior greats Steven Warthling, Jordan McGregor and Scott McGregor on staff as assistant coaches. All three are members of the Warriors’ 100-win club. “That’s huge to be able to have those three guys in the room,” said Nedell. “It’s great,” added Bukowski. “Having basically the whole McGregor family here is gonna help us win. And me practicing with Cody is gonna make me better. Same with Scott.” While the Warriors are fundamentally sound, Nedell is stressing that sometimes the difference in a close match boils down to the simplicity of who is in better shape. “I told them, when George Miller started here he was not the greatest technician as a coach,” said Nedell. “His athletes won a lot by being in shape and winning in the third period. Same attitude we’re taking here. You may not be the best wrestler coming out as a junior or senior, but if you’re in shape, you give yourself a chance of winning anytime in a match. That’s the attitude we’ve got to take.”

SPORTS REPORTER

St. Joe’s varsity wrestling coach Peter Kennedy wants to build a lasting tradition of success; a culture of winning that carries over from year to year. He is definitely pointed in the right direction. As the Marauders come into the new season, they will be led by four returning

wrestlers who placed at last season’s CHSAA championships. Senior Richie Jones, who won the 170-pound Catholic state title but fell short in his quest at the Federation tournament, enters the season with 114 career wins and is within striking distance of all-time leader Travis Berube’s 131 career victories. Senior Eesaa Abdur-Rahman (160), who placed

second at the Catholic states, senior Derek Penman(152), who was fifth, and senior Dominic Caruso (120), who placed second, all return. Junior Garrett Baugher, a state qualifier from two years ago, has also returns and will be at 145. “We have a wrestling team that’s only been around since 1984,” said Kennedy. “So we really don’t have a lot of tradition. We have to create it.” Kennedy added the culture

of demanding the best from yourself and each other that has been cultivated by his veterans will be vital in helping to shape the 13 incoming freshman. “They’re gonna see that the expectation here is to compete on a state-wide level,” said Kennedy. “Not just locally. They’re (veterans) on display at all times. So when they’re running after practice or getting extra lifts, that shows these younger

guys there is extra work that needs to be taken for success. Not just wrestling, but elsewhere in their lives.” Penman enters with 76 career wins, while Caruso is also within reach of the milestone mark of 100. The St. Joe’s coaching staff also has the plus of two former Marauder greats Taylor Golba and Craig Ostrum, who both won Catholic state titles (Golba in 2007, Ostrum in 2002).

KVIS sponsors village events for holiday cheer By Kimberlee Sabshin NT SUN CORRESPONDENT

On Monday, Dec. 8, the Kenmore Village Improvement Society will conclude a series of events for the Christmas and holiday season. KVIS members will participate in “Greens for Seniors,” a decorating initiative to bring season’s greetings to residents of the senior apartment complexes at Kenmore Avenue and Colvin Boulevard, and a holiday party at the Kenmore Community Center. At 4 p.m., “Greens for Seniors” participants will meet at the community center to make a total of

200 flags with bundles of fresh greens. KVIS President Melissa Foster said they will each include a bow, candy cane and wishes for a Merry Christmas or a happy holiday season. “We do this because a lot of times, seniors have a memory of holidays that may be different from what they have now. We know how strong scents can be to people, as far as memories are concerned. A lot of times, seniors don’t want to impose on family to say, ‘I’d like to have a real tree.’ This is just a little way to say, ‘Here’s some fresh greenery, that wonderful fresh, green smell.’” Foster also hopes dur-

ing this time period of the coming winter solstice, the darkest days of the year, the bundles of greenery will give seniors cheer for the holiday season, as well as a “real feeling that their community cares for them” and they “live in a community that really thinks of them as being our friends.” Next week, the greens will be distributed with the calendars the Kenmore Housing Authority, so the residents will be able to pick up both at the same time. When asked why it is important for the KVIS to do this, Foster said, “We’re really hoping that the seniors will know that we think of them as a very

important part of our community here – harbingers of wisdom and experience, and that we value them and care for them. We hope to give them a token of affection and just to say, ‘We hope you have a merry and happy holiday season.’” “Even though your life may be different living in a senior apartment now than it was in the past, when maybe you had more family living with you - maybe your life is different, but please know that there’s a whole community surrounding you that cares for you,” Foster added. This past Saturday, Nov. 29, KVIS also sponsored a tree lighting in the Village Green at Delaware Road

and Delaware Avenue. Foster said the event, which went “very, very well,” included mild weather and a very large blue spruce tree. Foster recalled how the tree needed to be shortened because when the Department of Public Works first got it, one of the ropes securing it snapped. During the event, children sang Christmas carols and were able to meet Santa. Additionally, the Town of Tonawanda Youth, Parks and Recreation Department and Youth Engaged in Service participated in the event, which included photo opportunities for families and the arrival of Santa on a fire truck, who lit the tree. As everyone waited in

13

the cold for him to come, KVIS presented attendees with Christmas tree nougat candies and hot chocolate. “It’s a very festive, wonderful community time,” Foster recalled. “After it was over, a couple of us went over to the library, because in the library garden we redid this summer, there’s a pot there that we’ll change out seasonally. As we were adding the winter display to the pot, a family walked by. They said, ‘Thanks so much for that,’ and how much they enjoyed it. They thanked KVIS for helping to truly create that village, smalltown feeling, and how thrilled they are to live here.”

GOP seeks candidates for 2015 election The Town of Tonawanda Republican Committee spent 2014 rebuilding its brand and growing its ranks. Now, with 2015 on the horizon, the committee is beginning its mission to bring two-party government back to the town and its residents. Committee Chairman Sean O’Neil announced that the committee is seeking candidates for the 2015 town elections. Voters will be choosing candidates for supervisor, town board and town clerk, and the committee is seeking candidates for all three positions, according to O’Neil. “We have received several inquiries about these positions, but we want to reach out to all who may be interested in running for public office. We are

especially interested in seeking out female candidates,” O’Neil said. “With the game-changing victory in the 143rd Assembly District by Angela Wozniak, it’s clear to me and this committee that it’s high time that more women run for office in the town. We welcome and encourage female applicants for all three positions.” Applicants are asked to send an e-mail with a resume attachment to Oneils2000@aol.com. Enter your last name and “town candidate” in the subject line. “We don’t plan on wast-

ing a lot of time in this process. Once the New Year comes, we will be interviewing candidates and picking the best of the group soon after,” O’Neil said. “My only goal for our candidates for 2015 is to win, and that starts as soon as possible. Town residents deserve twoparty government, and we will bring it to them, that is my promise.” More information can be found about the committee by visiting its web site, www.kentongop. com, on Facebook and on Twitter at @TonawandaGOP.

District panel answers questions about capital project By Kimberlee Sabshin NT SUN CORRESPONDENT

On Monday night, one week ahead of the Kenmore-Tonawanda School District’s capital project vote from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Hoover Middle School on Thorncliff Road, the district’s Board of Education held an informational forum to answer questions from Ken-Ton residents about the second part of the capital project they will be voting on, as well as the impact it will have on voters. A panel made up of Superintendent Dawn Mirand, Board President Bob Dana, Vice President Stephen Brooks, Assistant Superintendent for Finance Gerald Stuitje and Athletic Director Brett Banker, Scott Jones and Steve DiMatteo of Gordon W. Jones Architects, and Thomas Caruso, Carrie Preston and John Ticco of Campus Construction Management Group, Inc. was on hand. Both these firms have worked with the district since the first phase of the capital project, which was approved several years ago and is scheduled to be completed later this year. This second phase of the project consists of Proposition One, the funding of which will come from state aid and the district’s capital reserve. It will have no tax impact on residents. This part of the capital project also includes Proposition Two, which will cost an additional $12 per year in taxes for an average home-

owner with an assessed value of $100,000. “The process to put Phase Two before you involved a multi-stakeholder group, made up of Board of Education members, administration and some teachers,” Mirand said. “From there, they looked at the ‘needs’ list. This group was charged with determining the scope of the project.” Mirand emphasized Proposition Two cannot pass unless the first proposition is approved. Proposition One includes necessary structural and other upgrades to Edison, Franklin, Hoover and Lindbergh Elementary Schools, Franklin and Hoover Middle Schools and Kenmore East and West High Schools. Proposition Two would update athletic fields at Adams Field, Crosby Field and Kenmore West and renovate the aging auditoriums at Franklin and Hoover Middle Schools. The point of the meeting was to provide information but not sway voters’ opinions, Dana stressed. “You may be surprised that none of us are up here saying, ‘It’s a great project; you’ve got to vote for it.’ We can’t. It’s against the law,” said Dana. “I want you to understand that we can provide you with factual information, but we cannot, by law - in any way, shape or form try to persuade you to vote one way or the other. The information is here.” According to Banker, his main concern in planning to renovate the three athletic fields was creating

an ideal environment for spring sports, including baseball and softball. He said the district previously had issues with being unable to host events “20 percent of the time” they had the opportunity to do so. The fields will also have artificial turf put in place in all three fields. “The outfields of those two baseball and softball fields, there will be a soccer field going in there as well, so there will be multiple uses for two seasons,” added Banker. In discussing the artificial turf, one mother asked the panel about the safety of the artificial turf that will be used in the KenTon District’s fields, citing media reports earlier this year that raised the question of whether crumb rubber, a material made of recycled rubber from car tires that is often used in artificial turf, could cause health problems. However, Jones said the materials that are planned for use in the capital project renovations have all been tested and proven to be non-toxic. “They’ve sensationalized some issues regarding that, and they raised the question: is the material that is being used in these actually something that is dangerous for the kids?” Jones said. “That’s where the whole alarmism came about, with the material… it helps absorb the impact. There have been dozens of studies that have been done, because this issue regarding these fields is not new.” Jones said that over the last decade, concern sur-

faced and in response, studies have been done, which the district took into account when it chose a product for the athletic fields. “The product that is going to be chosen is the one that is the most tested, the most reviewed and has the most international testing,” he added, citing a recent school board study in Montreal, Canada, which found, after extensive chemical analysis, that its turf materials were safe for children. Another resident asked what would specifically be done with the Hoover Middle auditorium, where the forum was being held. “If I look around this room myself, it looks pretty good, so I was wondering what you were going to do,” the resident said, gesturing around the room. In response, DiMatteo explained the Hoover and Franklin auditoriums need worn-out seats replaced, new carpeting and paint on the concrete flooring underneath the seats, among other renovations. Auditorium doors will be replaced with new ones to improve the acoustics, walls will be repaired and repainted and new sounds systems and lighting will be added.
