Local veterans speak at board of education meeting

Christmas church services to be held in Clarence By Alicia Greco THE SUN EDITOR

CPOWNY

The Clarence Central School District Board of Education held a public hearing prior to a regular meeting on Dec. 15 to discuss the proposed Veteran’s Tax Exemption. By Alicia Greco THE SUN EDITOR

Clarence Central School District’s Business Official Richard Mancuso gave a brief overview of the proposed Veteran’s Tax Exemption during a public hearing held by the Clarence Central School District Board of Education on Dec. 15 at Ledgeview Elementary. The Veteran’s tax exemption was passed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, last year. According to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website, “There are three different property tax exemptions available to veterans who have served in the United

States Armed Forces, including veterans who have served in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.” Cuomo has extended the exemption for veterans from counties and municipal government to also include the opportunity for school districts to opt into the program, as well. Mancuso explained that there are levels to the exemption; veterans in wartime, combat veterans, and disabled veterans will be eligible. By law, the Clarence Central School District needed to hold a public hearing before making any decision regarding the exemption program. “For the Clarence School

District, the assessments that would be exempt from property tax total $27,515,000,” Mancuso said. “It is just under 1 percent of the districts total assessment which is almost 2.9 million.” Who would be eligible if this exemption was passed? A total of 1,400 local veterans may take advantage of this exemption. The exemption may also apply to a widow of an veteran, as long as they are not remarried, he added. If passed, the program will have an effect on taxes. There are three levels that may engage in the program: wartime veteran, combat veteran and the disabled veteran. Mancuso explained that the maxi-

mum amount annually for veterans would be as follows: $266 for combat or wartime veterans, $444 for combat veterans, and up to $888 for disabled veterans. A non-veteran will pay about $28 per year in taxes. The board of education has a few actions that it may take. First, the district may offer the exemption. The board may take no action and the exemption will have no effect on the town. Or the Clarence Central School District may continue to review the exemption and delay the decision.

Ledgeview had a packed house for veteran tax public hearing Veterans from Page 1 “Officially, we have to approve this by March 1, 2015 if we want it to apply to this coming year’s school taxes,” he said. Mancuso added that Erie County “on a practical basis would like to see an exemption approved by the end of January so that they can get all the information out to assessors and tax collectors.” Many spoke during the open forum segment of the public hearing. One volunteer presenter said, “It is in remembering those fallen comrades that we are reminded of those whose fate is still unknown, those still listed as MIA or POW.” More than 78,000 Americans are still unaccounted for he added; “There are several hundred thousands of men and women who never got home. They never got here and they don’t have a chance to pay school taxes.” Currently, there are six schools now accepting this proposal: Attica, Gowanda, North Collins, Cheektowaga, Niagara-Wheatfield and Lancaster. Ron Andrews, a local

resident, stood up to speak about his father, who is a veteran. “I am for you to vote for the proposal. Politics and personalities must be set aside. It should matter now if Clarence is or isn’t among the first districts in this area to accept this proposal. There are vets who are right now at home, like my dad, wrapped up in an afghan watching TV who are too proud to come and ask for more,” he said. “Or to demonstrate loudly before you as they have been trained to obey authority. Truthfully, they don’t believe they make a difference. I ask you to prove them wrong.” Another resident spoke to the board, as well. He said, “Where would our country be if it weren’t for the brave men and women that daily put their lives on the line. Some never returned to this country, some we have no idea where they are. … there are some wealthy people in this community and there are some poor people in this community. “I can unequivocally assure you that a 1 percent

increase in our taxes would not cause anyone to miss a payment on their mortgage or if you take trips, it wouldn’t cause you to miss a trip. We’re talking a 1 percent increase. That’s such a miniscule amount increase when you think of men and women and the various branches of service that laid their lives on the line. … We might not be the best country in the world, bu we have a democracy. And they defended that because they believe it. I just ask the board of education: make the right choice, make the right decision,” he said. Board President Maryellen Kloss addressed attendees of the hearing and said, “We’re doing [the public hearing] because it’s required by law to have one. Our role is to gather the information from Mr. Mancuso, Mr Hicks. We have people from the Erie County Assessor’s Office and we gather all of their information to make a decision. “To make a decision without gathering all of this information and hearing it, would be improper,” she said.

BNHV to open exciting new Prohibition exhibit

A new exhibit — Vice and Virtue: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition — is scheduled to open on April 24, 2015, at Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village in Amherst. Vice and Virtue: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition will explore how the 18th Amendment sought to bring on an age of temperance and virtue but instead resulted in an increase of excess, indulgence and vice as Americans began to test the limits of one of the most unpopular pieces of legislature in American history. Exhibit sponsors for Vice and Virtue: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition are being sought, as well as donations of items related to the Prohibition era to be put on display to supplement existing exhibition items. These items

would be considered on loan and would be on display for the three-year duration of the exhibit. In particular, BNHV is interested in photos, correspondence, permits or other documents related to Prohibition, items used to smuggle alcohol or evade authorities (hollowed canes, hip flasks, false books), newspaper articles, home distillery items, bottles, kegs, barrels and oral histories from members of the community. The deadline for participating as a sponsor or for donating items is Feb. 20, 2015. If you have any questions regarding sponsorship of this exhibit or donating artifacts or oral histories, email kshypski@bnhv.org or call 6891440, ext. 7720.

of Clarence, the Highway Department runs 12 months a year, 24 hours a day. During the winter months the three managers rotate every day so that someone is always on call 24 hours a day. This is critical because the men have to be called out at either 3 a.m. or 5 a.m. to plow, sand or salt, and someone needs to up to monitor the weather and to make the call. The local weather reports are not always accurate, so someone is always up, calling and checking on overnight conditions, or driving around to see what shape the roads are in. The management team has gotten so good at predicting the overnight conditions that the district frequently calls to check in before deciding whether to close the schools, and the management team frequently checks with each other before deciding how to clear the streets. Because storms usually roll in from the South West, it is not unusual for it to be snowing hard on Wherle Drive while Tonawanda Creek Road is clear. Once in a while, the reverse is true, where Harris Hill is clear and Clarence Center is buried. While grit was used for many years to keep the

roads from icing up, grit had to be cleared from ALL the roads every spring, a long and costly cleanup. Recently, the town has gone almost entirely to salt, and will use over 900 tons this winter. While most people know the Highway Department for keeping the roads clear during the winter, they are just as active during the summer months. During the summer they pave using a combination of either asphalt or Nova Chip to keep all of our roads in prime condition. Clarence is one of the few towns of its size that paves, and Superintendent Dussing and his men are proud of their excellent work. The Superintendent has said on more than one occasion that his paving crews, run by Forman Rich Bolt, John Kelkenburg and Bill Metzger are a match for any private contractor in Western New York. The department also cleans ditches, installs culvert and mows the bike path. In talking to and working with the employees of the Clarence Highway Department, I am struck by their dedication to their work. On call 24 hours a day during the cold, chilly winter months, they always manage to keep the roads safe and clear. Last week someone commented to me that they could always tell when they had passed back into the town of Clarence from Amherst by the fact that Clarence roads are always cleared early and well salted. From all of the residents of the town of Clarence, I want to thank the employees of the highway department for their selfless work and dedication to the town. Holiday wish list not just for kids

Sadowy’s commitment to hoops helps him grow as a player, leader

Mike Haim

SPORTS COLUMNIST

By Melissa Brawdy

At this time of year, in a variety of locations from coast to coast, kids are lining up to have a chat with Santa Claus and relay what’s on their Christmas wish list. But why limit it to the kids? I’ve long have been alarmed at the number of school-age kids who no longer visit with Santa, thinking they’re too cool to be part of a time-honored tradition. I was personally horrified years ago when my own son, perhaps around age seven, seemed to be the oldest kid in line. So in the spirit of the season, I’m taking the tradition back and have made a sports-related list of things I’d tell Santa I’d want this Christmas: First, I’d like to see one of our local college basketball teams pull off an upset of a nationally-renowned program. UB almost did it against top-ranked Kentucky a few weeks ago and will have another kick at a highly-regarded opponent when they travel to Wisconsin for a Dec. 28 game. St. Bonaventure took Pitt down to the wire this past Saturday, nearly ending the Panthers’ 25-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents. There are a wealth of stories about some upstart program recording a significant victory against a powerhouse, so why can’t we enjoy that kind of moment for a change? Next, I’d like to have some sort of personal epiphany which leads me to either love or loathe UB’s mission to become identified as “New York.”

Matt Sadowy knows the importance of hard work and dedication. He’s one of the co-captains of the Clarence varsity basketball team and knows that his hard work and dedication got him to where he is. There was a time when captaining a basketball team wouldn’t have been a possibility. “I used to not be good [at basketball] at all,” Sadowy admitted. “But I went to camps and I put my time in with the coaches, and they helped develop me to get to where I am now.” Now he’s a vocal leader who helps unite his young team by making sure everyone is communicating. The team lost all five of last year’s starters to graduation, leaving Sadowy and four new seniors as starters on this year’s team. Sadowy was asked what he brings to the team as a leader. “ Vo c a l i z a t i o n . S i n c e we’re very young, we’re timid and we don’t talk a lot,” Sadowy said. “We don’t call things out, don’t call out screens, and when that’s not happening, the communication is down and it’s difficult to know when something’s happening and if somebody’s not paying attention. If you’re talking and everybody hears you, then everyone’s involved.” And what does he bring as a player? JEFFREY T. BARNES

Sacred Heart Stevens’ work ethic an asset for Clarence basketball outlasts Christian Central

By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER

It wasn’t a pretty win or a nearly played game, but the Sacred Heart Sharks basketball team did just enough to pull out a 54-49 win over the Christian Central Academy Crusaders on Tuesday night (Dec. 16). Sacred Heart led 33-21 at halftime and 50-29 at the end of the third quarter before almost losing the lead in the fourth. Sacred Heart coach Sister Maria

Pares liked parts of her team’s game but was overall unhappy with the way the Sharks played. “I thought it was sloppy and I think we didn’t make good decisions,” she said. “The first quarter we did, the beginning of the third quarter, then we went back to playing like garbage.” Sister Pares believes that her team will learn from this game. That’s the positive that she’ll take away. “It was a good game for us because [now] we actually understand,” she said. Sister Pares’ hope is that the girls understand now that they need to play the way they know how.

Kyle Stevens is willing to put in the extra work to be the best he can be. The senior is one of the captains of the young Clarence varsity basketball team this year and brings his experience and hard work to his leadership role. He credits that extra work for his success as a basketball player. “I think it stems from a lot of hard work in the offseason,” Stevens said. “Going to camps, doing things in the gym when no one else wants to. Getting out and working on your skills instead of staying home and playing video games, stuff like that.”

Clarence girls pick up win in key league matchup And Clarence earned that win with a 40-31 victory over the Redskins Monday night (Dec. 15). The Red Devils trailed for only a few minutes at the beginning of the game before Anna Davies’ five points to start the game gave Clarence a 5-4 lead. “Anna Davies had a great game,” Booker said. The girls never looked back. They led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter and maintained a comfortable lead for the rest of the game. Clarence was able to get rebounds when it needed to and play the strong defense that Booker looks for.

By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER

The Clarence girls varsity basketball team came into Monday’s league matchup against Lancaster looking for one thing: a win. “It’s a league game,” Clarence coach Erin Booker said. “We were looking for the points for playoffs, looking for a win.”

Looking to reflect more on impact of sports “Wish List” from page A6 I’m still ambivalent about the idea, since I think the state needs a true representative on the national athletic stages but I also don’t want to see the university’s civic identity get compromised. I tend to think that most universities with a state moniker are located in smaller communities (think Michigan and Ann Arbor, Missouri and Columbia, Kentucky and Lexington, etc.), so it doesn’t make sense for Buffalo to make itself seem smaller. But the idea of having New York City-based alumni become a force in fund-raising and awareness is irresistible. At some point I’d like there to be an overwhelming reason to commit to an opinion either way. Next, I’d like to see fewer kids get saddled with terminal illnesses. While this doesn’t appear to be a sports-related wish, it becomes one when I see what seems to be a constant parade of teams and individual stars offering wonderful, heartwarming experiences to children who have been dealt a devastating prognosis. Bad news is a fact

of life, and organizations such as “Make a Wish” have tried to make tragic journeys more palatable, but I’d like to see a day when this sort of outreach isn’t necessary. Next, as someone who’s been involved in “behind the scenes” aspects of sports for over 30 years, I’d like to reflect more often on how lucky I’ve been to be part of the local sports scene. There are times when I’ll walk into a venue or leave an event and get that chill down my spine and remind myself about how many other people would love to be in my shoes. But those feelings always seem to pale in comparison to how I felt when I was a kid, getting my formative tastes of sporting events and feeling like nothing in the world mattered like that day’s game. Age may somewhat dull the senses, but I’d love to recapture the innocence of my youth and suspend worry about “real world” issues. It’s kind of like the holiday season itself: may we all tap into the wonder of it like we’re kids again. www.twitter.com/mikehaim

“We did a nice job reb o u n d i n g . We p l a y e d defense phenomenal,” Booker said. “I was very happy with our defense. Good job trapping, good job denying down to their bigs. We created a lot of steals.” Booker was happy with the way the offense performed Monday night as well. She liked the patience she saw from her offense and specifically mentioned Carly Reynolds, who had 11 points in Monday’s game. “We did well offensively too,” Booker said. “We had a lot more patience with our offense. Worked the ball to some of our bigs. Carly

Reynolds had a big game tonight. So that’s what we were looking to do.” At halftime Clarence led Lancaster 26-14. The Red Devils increased their lead to 36-19 at the end of the third quarter before winning 41-30. Clarence’s strong defense and patient offense went along with Booker’s plan coming into tonight’s game: strong defense that leads to offense. “Our game plan is really to have our defense drive our offense and play smart,” Booker said. Tonight’s game was consistent, with the whole team

“Stevens” from page A6 Stevens and co-captain Matt Sadowy are two of the few players on this year’s team with varsity experience. Though neither was a starter on last year’s team, which graduated all five of its starters, Stevens and Sadowy were there and able to learn from watching and bring what they learned to this year’s team. That helps them to prepare not only themselves, but their teammates as well to play at the varsity level. “I can speak for Matt and myself, we both bring back not much but more varsity experience than the rest of our teammates,” Stevens said. “And that helps us to be more ready for varsity situations so we can help our teammates get ready for that as well.” Another leadership quality Stevens possesses is his teamoriented attitude. He’s even gone so far as to not speak of any individual goals, but only what he wants for the team. He wants to help the younger players grow to make the team as a whole better. “I think that since, like I said, we have a lot of inexperience, our main goal is to get us to grow as a team so that we can all be better players, more confident,” Stevens said. “Wins and losses will come with that once we’re

four steals. “I wasn’t happy with our offense,” Sister Pares reiterated. “Our defense was OK.” Sacred Heart’s defense stalled a little at the end, but the Crusaders’ comeback was also aided by nine free throws, seven of which they made. working hard every day.” Individual goals have no place on this team. “It’s all team-oriented because there’s no individuals on this team,” Stevens said. “We’re all one.” Stevens said that reaching those team goals will require everyone to have that attitude and be united as a team. “I think the biggest thing is to have all 12 guys in there working hard every day to push each other, make each other better,” he said. “I think that’s the biggest thing.” Stevens will spend the last year of his high school basketball career leading and uniting this team to reach the goals they’ve set. And this season will conclude his basketball career. He does not plan to continue playing basketball in college. “While I would like to, I’ve always wanted to go to a big school like North Carolina,” Stevens explained. “And the talent there is just so supreme that I don’t want to push myself too hard to try to make that happen.” So he’ll take full advantage of this season, putting in the extra work to make himself the best player, leader, and teammate he can be.

The win improved Clarence’s record to 2-1. The Red Devils’ next game is Dec.18 at Starpoint.

Stevens’ experience helps him lead

Sharks improved to 4-1 with win They can’t try to do too much, such as attempting a long pass when all that was needed was a simple one, and they can’t stray away from the game plan they have. In Tuesday’s game, Sister Pares didn’t hesitate to pull her starters when she didn’t like how they were playing. And she’ll do the same in the future if she has to. “There’s no way I’m going to leave my starters in, I don’t care who they are,” she said. “I don’t do that. We didn’t need to leave our starters in,

paying well throughout. Booker was happy with the way her team played and glad that she was able to utilize all of her players. Each girl was able to contribute and gain valuable experience. “I got everybody into the game, which was good,” Booker said. As good as the defense was that night, Booker said there is still room for improvement. It can only get better if the team is able to improve defensive aspects of its game even more. “There’s still obviously room for improvement,” Booker said. “Rebound-

“A big body,” he said with a smile. Sadowy is listed at 6-foot-6, the tallest player on the team, and uses his size to his advantage. This year, Sadowy hopes to lead the team to what he says is their goal every year: a section title. “I would say [our goal] is the same as last year,” Sadowy said. “We wanted a section title. We didn’t get it, but we made it to the game and that’s a big statement. And I believe

that’s what the whole team wants again. To be able to go there and experience it is wonderful.” Sadowy, like his co-captain Kyle Stevens, doesn’t have any individual goals set. He’s focused on the team. “Individually, I don’t really have that many goals,” Sadowy said. “I would rather just see the team win as a whole.” He hopes that the rest of his team will have that same team-oriented mind-

set. It’s something Sadowy believes his team needs to improve on in order to accomplish its goals. “We need to work as a unit,” Sadowy said. “How we play sometimes, we get too individualized and one person tries to do too much, where if they made the extra pass, somebody would be open. So we just need to work together more often than we do at times.” Sadowy is a senior this year and plans to continue playing basketball in col-

lege. He just isn’t sure where yet. “I plan on playing basketball in college,” he said. “I don’t know where yet. I’m undecided. There’s a couple places I’m looking at.” Wherever he goes, he’ll bring his vocal style and size advantage to improve a new team. But for the test of this season, his focus is on uniting the team he’s currently a part of to reach their goal of a section title.

FROM the SIDELINES A time of the year for giving: Bills distribute gifts, wins By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR

Buffalo Bills long snapper Garrison Sanborn fondly remembers what it was like to be a kid during the holidays. “I was a kid once,” Sanborn began. “It’s a blast to get gifts.” That’s why Sanborn decided to give a few of his own recently. Sanborn, a sixth-year NFL veteran, was one of a host of Buffalo players to participate in the Bills Toyota Rookie Club’s annual holiday party for children on Tuesday, Dec. 9, inside a winter wonderland-themed Jim Kelly Club at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Over 100 children from 10 local organizations were invited to attend the event. Children from each organization submitted a holiday wish list before the party,

and Bills players — Sanborn included — distributed bags full of gifts to everyone of them. Sanborn, who’s taken part in the event since his rookie year, said seeing how excited the kids were made participating more than worth his while. “There’s nothing like it, seeing kids happy,” Sanborn said. “It’s just a regular day to try and bring a smile to their face, and that’s why we’re here. I know I’ll keep coming as long as I’m [in Buffalo].” And Sanborn wasn’t alone. Bills running back C.J. Spiller, who has also taken part in the event since his first NFL season in 2010, was also in attendance and agreed that making kids happy is something he and his teammates strive to do. “The biggest thing is just seeing the smiles on their

Buff State hockey downs Johnson & Wales BUFFALO, NY—Jason Zaleski (Scranton, PA/Scranton) scored three times and Ryan Salkeld (Virginia Beach, VA/Churchland) tallied four points to lead Buffalo State (3-6-2) to a 5-3 victory over visiting Johnson & Wales (55-1) in a non-conference game today at the Ice Arena. Salkeld opened the scoring with just over three minutes remaining in the opening period when he forced a turnover just inside the Wildcats’ blue line and buried the breakaway attempt. Johnson & Wales drew even, but Zaleski’s first of the game reclaimed the lead for Buffalo State with just 20 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Salkeld gave the Bengals a 3-1 lead with his second of the game and fifth of the season on the power play early in the

second period, but the Wildcats answered again with a power-play tally of their own. Zaleski’s second just under a minute later pushed the lead to two again, but JWU closed the deficit to 4-3 late in the middle stanza. Buffalo State allowed just five shots in the third period, all in the closing minutes, and Zaleski scored his third of the game and fifth of the season on the empty net to seal the victory. Ian Sylves (Sloan, NY/ JFK) finished with 20 saves in the victory as the Bengals outshot the Wildcats, 25-23. The Bengals finished 1 for 6 on the power play, and JWU was 1 for 3. Buffalo state will break for the holidays before facing Neumann in the first round of the Norxqwich Tournament in the New Year on Jan. 2.

Wallace, Edwards guide Bengals past RIT BUFFALO, NY – Senior Ashley Wallace (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) poured in a team-high 23 points to lead Buffalo State women’s hoops (4-4) to a 74-66 non-conference victory over RIT (5-3) on Saturday afternoon in Sports Arena. Keyonte Edwards (Buffalo, NY/O’Hara) recorded a career-high 12 rebounds, pacing, the Bengals defense and tallied eight points.

Buffalo State finished the night shooting 39.1 percent (25-64) from the floor, 44.4 percent (4-9) from long range and 55.6 percent (20-36) from the charity stripe. The Bengals also recorded 14 fast break points and outrebounded the Tigers, 58-38. The Bengals returned to action Monday at Pitt-Bradford, where they lost, 77-68. Wallace had her third double-double of the season.

faces,” he said. “Growing up, most guys didn’t have this opportunity to have NFL players hand them Christmas presents. So for us to be able to be put on a platform and be able to give back to the community, it means a lot, but most important, it means more to the kids, just to see them smiling.” Smiles turned into super duper smiles during the latter stages of the gift-giving. With tree-side gifts becoming sparse and a handful of children yet to receive one, a group of Bills players emerged from another room riding bicycles. And the child-sized bikes certainly weren’t for 6-foot-4, 310-pound center Eric Wood or 6-foot5, 343-pound guard Cyril Richardson. They were for the kids, an announcement that drew both laughter and applause from party-goers. “It was great to see,” Sanborn said. Throughout the evening, children got a chance to dine and engage in conversation with Bills players. Rookie cornerback Ross Cockrell noted that was his favorite part of the evening. “Just sitting down and getting a chance to talk with some of the kids about what they go through every day, going to school, what their favorite subjects are and stuff like that,” Cockrell said. “That was the best part about it. “It’s gratifying. Any chance you get to hand out smiles and happiness, it’s

At 8-6, Buffalo can finish no worse than 8-8. It last had a non-losing record in 2004, when Drew Bledsoe was still under center and Mike Mularkey was calling the shots as head coach. The Bills’ secondary shined against the Packers, holding likely MVP Aaron Rodgers to no touchdowns

and two interceptions for the first time in his illustrious career. Recent addition Bacarri Rambo had both picks. While the Bills were victorious, their offense struggled mightily and didn’t find the end zone once. Marcus Thigpen returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown, Dan Carpenter tacked on four field goals, and Mario Williams had a late-game strip-sack of Rodgers that resulted in a safety to round out the team’s scoring. “We have a great defense. We know that those guys are going to make plays for us and we’ve got to take advantage of them,” running

back Fred Jackson said. “We didn’t get in the end zone, which is something you need to do to win games, but as long as our defense keeps us in the game like that and keeps making plays, we have an opportunity to win.” Buffalo will take its staunch defense on the road Sunday when it visits Oakland (2-12). The Raiders are coming off a 31-13 loss to Kansas City but have won two of their last four games, including a Week 13 win over San Francisco. Kickoff is slated for 4:25 p.m. The game will be broadcast on CBS.

Cheektowaga’s softball central is focused on all softball, all the time

Softball Central is located at 3223 Broadway St. By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

Even during down times in life, Kevin Hufford always had softball in his life. Back on his feet now, the Cheektowaga resident is looking to make the sport an even bigger part of his daily routine. Hufford and his wife, Melissa, launched Softball Central, located at 3223 Broadway St. in Cheektowaga, last week. The indoor facility is focused strictly on softball. Softball has kept us going for an awful long time,” Kevin Hufford said. “We’re always been doing softball anyway. They say if you do what you love, you never have to go to work. I hope to come here every day.” Hufford has always been involved in softball. He started coaching at Cheektowaga Southside softball in 2001 and combined with his

wife as well as Beth O’Brien to rebuild the Cheektowaga Crabapple travel team. He’s also been an assistant coach at Medaille College, Hutch-Tech High School and currently Erie County Community College. But his life changed on Aug. 28, 2009 when he was seriously injured after being hit by a truck while paving city streets. Unable to work and battling multiple back surgeries, Hufford also had time to dream. “The thought of being able to possibly open this thing up while we were coaching all these kids kind of kept us going,” said Hufford, who obtained a business degree after the accident. “Now we’re going to take a shot at it.” Softball Central will include two batting cages, two pitching cages and a stationary cage. There will be batting lessons, pitching lessons and

a place for girls to stay sharp when the snow is falling. It’s all softball. “It’s just going to be softball,” Hufford said. “There’s plenty of places people can go and get all the baseball they want inside. We’re hoping if we just focus on softball. Hopefully we can be a little less expensive and a lot more focused and it will all work out.” Hufford said he will offer some free time at the facility to JFK, Cleveland Hill, Maryvale and Cheektowaga Central. And of course St. Mary’s of Lancaster, where his daughter Erin is a sophomore and one of the elite softball players in Western New York. A member of the Gold Coast Hurricanes out of Florida as well as the lo-

cal New Era Diamond Girls, Erin has a goal of playing collegiately for the University of Tennessee. “She’s almost more talented than we can afford her to be right now,” Kevin Hufford said with a laugh. But that’s ultimately the goal for Softball Central, to help local players grow towards big dreams. Hufford expects players from Niagara Falls to Hamburg to Clarence will be at the facility for individual lessons. Now that it’s up and running, it’s expected to grow stronger and stronger for years to come. “If it makes a dollar more than it costs, it’ll be here forever,” Hufford said. “I’ll just have to get a job. If I can make a living doing this, that would be all the better.”

MIKE PIDANICK

Softball Central features two batting cages, two pitching cages and a stationary cage.

Clarence School Board updates Capital Project Board from Page 1 “An odd group to get together, but it started because the refuse removal companies said that they could give us better prices because they service those areas, for whatever reason,” Mancuso continued, about the four districts joining together for a mutual bid. “As everybody knows, finally on Nov. 24 we had our Capital Project vote. Both items were approved overwhelmingly. The board of education does need to accept those vote results,” he said. He went on to discuss and clarify information about the project.

In regard to the timeframe Mancuso said, “We have already submitted the five group projects to New York state. We’re hopeful that January/February we’ll get approval, get bids out for you to approve prior to summer, and do the roof work this summer.” Furthermore, “every other day roof inspectors are built into the contract” for the schedule, he added. Before work will begin, project bids will need to be passed with approval by the board, he said. The district will manage any change orders; orders

that may get to a certain monetary level must be bid out and formally approved by the board. “Typically most of the projects that we’ve done, it’s rare that that will come up. The architects and engineers do a very good job putting these plans and specs together so when the bids go out, we hope we have everything covered,” Mancuso said. “You just never know with reconstruction, when something gets dug into what ends up happening.” In regard to the funding aspect of the Capital Project, “The next couple of months,

The Clarence Central School District Board of Education updated the public on what the future holds for the Capital Project. we’ll ask you to pass a bond resolution that allows us to borrow money,” Mancuso said. “We don’t need to borrow this money most likely until the next fiscal year, so that will delay fiscal year payments for this project.” From 2015-2016 “the $3 million that was approved — part of the first proposition — should be able to cover us for all the costs that we need to do, at least until July 1.” Of the two propositions of the Capital Project, there will be significant renovations to the athletic field, including implementation of a new athletic turf. “Turf work is going to be weather contingent. It is going to take approximately six full months to do it,” he said. “Depending on how early in spring [2016] they can start, will depend on how far will

the Policy 7210 — Student Evaluation. Superintendent Geoffrey Hicks gave a brief overview of what that entails. “This policy now comports with the NYS regulatory changes that you cannot use grades 3-8 test results to make placement decision on students. In other words, you couldn’t use them to retain a student in a grade level. You couldn’t use them to make an enrichment classification for a student. We never did, some school districts across NYS did. The commissioner came up with a regulation; we have to have our policy reflect that. “It also says that no state test score can be in the same file as the students permanent record. So it causes us a little bit of a hassle to create a dual system, but we will abide with the regulation,” Hicks said.

And we anticipate all the state approvals and bids by then.” All of the 14 different projects of the Capital Project are site based. “New York state requires every single site to have a project. We’ve got 9 sites, meaning our six schools, the bus garage, transportation, the maintenance building and the concession stand,” Mancuso said. So those are nine projects. On top of that, we’re asking NYS to fast-track the five groups, so that’s where we end up. “We hope state approval comes late in 2015 so that we can bid, and then [the board] will award very early in 2016.” In other board matters: – Approval was passed for
