Youth, depth carry Clarence swimmers to yet another undefeated campaign By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER

Although the Clarence girls swim team repeated as State Champions for the third straight year in 2013, it wasn’t sure what to expect coming into 2014. The Red Devils lost five seniors — four of whom were All-Americans — to graduation after the 2013 season. The team finished undefeated at 9-0 before going on to win a Section VI championship and a New York State championship. But all of those accomplishments were due largely to the seniors’ contributions. “We were starting out fresh [this year],” coach Joe Zwierzchowski said. “It was a whole new team.” Still, Zwierzchowski was cautiously optimistic. “I knew we would be good,” he said. “We had a good solid core returning of sophomores and juniors. I knew we would be solid. I just didn’t know if we would be good enough to beat OP and Will East, two really talented teams.” But the team’s depth and youth carried them through another undefeated season. Clarence boasted a 10-0 record this year. “We have fantastic depth,” Zwierzchowski said. “We’re young. We have four eighth graders on the team who contributed a lot. We have five or six freshmen who contributed a great deal. So whereas we don’t have that All-American

firepower this year, we managed to beat the good teams with our depth.” Opponents had lower expectations for Clarence this year, hoping that this was the year they could beat the Red Devils. Zwierzchowski knew his girls heard the doubts of other teams, but the girls quickly put those doubts to rest. “We had different ideas,” Zwierzchowski said. “We wanted to keep the string of ECIC and sectional titles going, so we worked really hard to do that.” The depth of the 2014 Clarence team meant that several girls were key swimmers this year. Maddy Jacumski and Dorotka Tou, both seniors and captains, were the two returning members of last year’s All-American medley relay. Seniors Christina Victor and KatiaAaron were also captains. Juniors Alex Butler, Tori Argentieri and Maddy Tryjankowski also stepped up as key members of this year’s team. Clarence was also fortunate to add two brand new members to the 2013 team. Two sisters, sophomore Celia Kottakis and freshman Anna Kottakis, moved to Clarence from New Jersey and were vital to this year’s success. “Without those two, we may not have repeated,” Zwierzchowski said. “They’ve been an integral part of our success this year.”

Sacred Heart volleyball drops ‘The Training Edge’ Patriots in straight sets keys on Krav Maga By Melissa Brawdy

By Melissa Brawdy

After starting the season with a 2-6 record, the Sacred Heart varsity volleyball team has won five of its last seven matches, including a 3-0 win over Niagara Catholic on Monday (Oct.20). The Sharks have shown considerable improvement since the beginning of the year, and Monday’s sweep was just another sign of that. In the first game, Sacred Heart jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and led 14-3 at one point before taking a 25-9 decision. The Patriots picked up a few points at the end, but it wasn’t enough as the Sharks went up 1-0. In the second game, some sloppy play by the Sharks gave the Patriots a 4-0 lead to start, but Sacred Heart then picked up nine straight to take a lead it wouldn’t give back. It was the biggest win of the match, as the Sharks won 25-7 to go up 2-1. The Sharks wasted no time finishing what they’d started. They went down 3-0 before coming back and scoring five points. The game stayed

Krav Maga is a form of self defense that originated with the Israeli military in 1948 when Israel became a nation. What makes it unique is that it is based off of human instinct more than anything else, and also that it is easy for both men and women to learn and utilize. The Training Edge in Williamsville isamartialartstraining center and one of the few in the area that focus on Krav Maga. In 1999, owner Steve Spoth began to focus all of his time on the Training Edge. But he was unhappy with the options available as far as martial arts were concerned. Spoth had noticed that while there were many options for kids’ self defense, realistic options for adults were very limited. “I realized that there was no realgoodselfdefensemartialarts system, especiallyinthisarea, for adults,” Spoth said. “There were a lot of good traditional systems, but [as for] ones that would truly be applicable for the street and the crazy scenarios that happen out there, there was really nothing around that I felt was good for that.” Then he discovered Krav Maga. “ItwasexactlywhatIwaslooking for,” Spoth said. “I saw it and it was exactly what I was looking for, and I fell in love with it.”

Stephanie Martin and the Sacred Heart volleyball team had won five of seven after its victory against Niagara Catholic on Oct. 20. close, with the Patriots cutting the deficit to 16-10 near the end, but the Sharks scored nine straight points at the end

to finish it off and pick up the 25-10 win to take the match, 3-0. In the third game, Skylar Merrell, Kathleen Ryan,

and Stephanie Martin each had at least two aces.

Spoth began his training in 2000 in LosAngeles. There were challenges at first, of course. First, there was the physical challenge. Spoth had to take the training himself. That entailed weeks of training in which he would train seven days a week for eight hours a day. Then there was the financial burden of flying back and forth to Los Angeles. “It was a small school,” Spoth said. “I had just gone into it fulltime in 1999.” Thankfully, he had family members to assist him with the financial challenges. And then, once he had taken the training and been certified, Spoth had to make people aware of what Krav Maga was and why it was important. “At that time, no one had heard ofKravMaga,”Spothsaid. “The next part was marketing it and branding it in this area.” The training for the Israeli military is, of course, more intense than what you’ll find at the Training Edge. “It’s designed in a way that would be the most effective and efficient methods to take military personnel in a very short period of time, deploy them into hostile environments, and have them have the greatest success that they could in hand-to-hand combat situations,” Spoth explained.

Clarence returns to win column in victory over the Falls By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER

Though underdogs, the Clarence Red Devils knew they had a chance going into Niagara Falls if they could effectively run the ball while limiting the Wolverines’ speed. Clarence did just that on Saturday (Oct. 18) and picked up a solid 28-20 win over Niagara Falls. The Red Devils did whatever it took to score their four touchdowns, capitalizing on costly mistakes by the Wolverines. Clarence scored twice after Niagara Falls turnovers and once on a kick return. Clarence’s opening drive was unsuccessful, but Wolverines quarterback Lomax Barnes’ first pass of the game was an interception caught by Clarence’s Jonny Schmidt. Clarence took

advantage of the mistake, scoring on the next drive as Stephen Marzano ran the ball into the end zone with 6:17 remaining in the first quarter. Niagara Falls tied the game at seven in the second quarter on an impressive 73-yard pass from Barnes to Sharad Welch. It took just two plays on the next drive and a 52-yard pass from Pinto to Angelo Marzullo for the Red Devils to regain the lead. Clarence only lost the lead once more, but another touchdown by Marzullo and a successful 2-point conversion by Pinto gave the Red Devils a 21-14 lead that they wouldn’t give back. The Wolverines scored one more touchdown, but a failed attempt at the extra point helped Clarence maintain its one-point lead. Marzullo wasted no time padding that lead. He returned the Wolverines’ kick for another Clarence touchdown to secure the Red Devils’ 28-20 win. Coach Mark Layer praised

The Red Devils improved to 2-5 after beating the Wolverines, 28-20. Marzullo after the game and said it was only a matter of time before Marzullo scored the kick return touchdown. “We feel like he’s a threat to break the kickoff return every time he touches the ball,” Layer said. “They kicked right to him two or three times. Angelo gave

us great field position every time, and I kept saying to him, ‘The next one, the next one, the next one,’and he got one. I was confident that he had the ability to do that. He’s a tremendous player.” Clarence turned the ball over two times, compared to Niagara

Falls’ three turnovers, but the Red Devils were able to stop the Wolverines on each of those drives. The first time, they forced the Wolverines to turn the ball back over on a fumble recovered by Clarence’s Ryan Schlager. On the only other Niagara Falls drive gifted to them

on a Clarence turnover, the Red Devils sacked Barnes to keep the Wolverines from getting a first down on fourth-and-5. Layer felt that his team played a good game overall, incorporating double wing offense into a successful running game and passing the ball when needed. “We ran the ball well in the double wing offense and that was effective, and we were able to pick up some first downs and keep the ball out of their hands,” Layer said. “We threw the ball when we needed to. Scott [Pinto] made a big play out of the double wing, throwing the ball on a long [52-yard] touchdown to Angelo. And then of courseAngelo breaking the kickoff.” Layer had a smile after the game, happy for his team that their constant effort had finally paid off. “It was a great win for the kids,” he said. Clarence took on NiagaraWheatfield at home on Oct. 24. Results weren’t available at press time.

Training Edge offers most up-to-date system of Krav Maga “Training Edge” from page B1 Here in the United States, while the training isn’t quite as intense, the results and benefits are similar. The instinctive nature of Krav Maga is what makes it relatively easy to learn. And it is based on principle, not on specific techniques. “It’s built off of things that you already do normally when under stress, [and you] try to build off of that to the point where

the retention of it is greater,” Spoth explained. “There’s a lot less thinking involved, and it’s designed where you can take certain techniques that you need to do and apply them to multiple scenarios as much as possible, working off of a principle. So it’s more principle based, so it’s easier for people to understand. It’s easier to apply.”

Clarence looking forward to sectionals “Swim” from page B1

Even as the Israeli military has needed to adapt and Krav Maga has evolved, the principles haven’t changed. CT707, a class offered at the Training Edge, is the most advanced and up-to-date system of Krav Maga. Spoth believes that the value of learning Krav Maga is twofold. Not only is it about learning proven physical tech-

COLUMNIST

The Red Devils have their sights set on another sectional and state title. Zwierzchowski is very pleased with his team this year as another successful season comes to a close. He watched as his team united and new key swimmers stepped up when needed. “There’s a lot of development from the young swimmers,” he said. “We came together as a team. We graduated a lot of really good swimmers, so there was a lot of room for new talent to come in and take their place. Whereas we didn’t replace superstars and AllAmericans with a new crop of superstars and All-Americans,

we did replace it with young swimmers who are talented and who I think are going to grow into becoming very very good and accomplished swimmers.” So what’s next for Clarence? The ECIC Championships are this weekend, Friday and Saturday (Oct. 24 and 25), at Clarence High School. After that, Clarence will look ahead to the Section VI Championships in downtown Buffalo on Nov. 6 and 7. Of course, the girls of the Clarence swim team hope that their 2014 success won’t end there.

The Buffalo Bills celebrated the career of venerable playby-play broadcaster Van Miller this past Sunday, as the respected legend was inducted onto the team’s Wall of Fame. For folks like me, the ceremony represented something beyond Miller’s service to the local NFL team. It validated his status as perhaps the most versatile media personality in the area’s history. During a 55-year career, Miller hosted bowling shows, game shows, did play-by-play for a variety of local collegiate and professional teams, and delivered the latest sports developments and scores during a nightly newscast. To illustrate how modern local television has changed so much in the years since Miller’s retirement in 2000 as sports director from WIVBTV, consider how strange it would be for a station to produce a popular bowling series

or game show, much less have one of their staff host it. In those “glory days,” skeptics would wonder how the three major sports anchors in town - Miller (who also did play-by-play duties for the NBA Buffalo Braves), WGRZ’s Ed Kilgore (who was part of Buffalo Sabres telecasts for many years), and WKBW’s Rick Azar (who did similar duties for Bills and Sabres games) – could retain any shred of objectivity while being employed by one of the local teams. But somehow they did. That’s not an issue nowadays, as teams in all major sports leagues want the most brand-friendly broadcast possible, and high-profile local television personalities have stayed away from the broadcast booth. At the same time, local stations can hardly maximize any charisma their sports personnel might possess. They’re merely used for 90-second encores to the third weather segment, a topic Miller reportedly used as a parting shot during his retire-

Communication key to Sharks’ turnaround “Sharks” from page B1 Sacred Heart coach Allison Boehm said that the team has improved due to being more comfortable with each other and communicating more effectively. There is still room for communication to improve, but it has come a long way for the Sharks. “We definitely had a young squad going in, so we’ve learned, and they’ve learned, who can work with each other,” Boehm said. “We’ve

really worked on the communication on the court. It’s getting better. It isn’t there, but it’s definitely getting better, and I think that has led to a lot of them gelling on the court.” There were matches earlier in the year in which communication was a clear issue. It led to misses and too many points given up to the opponent because of sloppy plays by the Sharks. Those

Spoth emphasized the importance of people having a “positive attitude” and “confidence in themselves.” Nir Maman, an honored member of the Israeli military and instructor of Krav Maga, made an appearance at the Training Edge recently. He certifies students of Krav Maga but is moving toward the point where he will only certify those

affiliated with his organization. Krav Maga continues to grow in popularity around the United States, and at the Training Edge, Spoth and the other instructors will continue to emphasize the importance of the form of self defense that’s been proven in hostile situations. “These are proven techniques that have worked in hostile environments,” Spoth said.

Van Miller’s legacy involves much more than just service with Bills By Mike Haim

niques needed for self defense in real-life situations, but it is also about mental strength. “My belief is that I think we’re going to be beat up much more mentally than we’re ever going to be beat up physically,” Spoth said. “Having that mental toughness is just as important, if not more important, than having that physical toughness.”

issues seemed nonexistent in Monday’s game, and the girls played as a united team as they swept the Patriots. Boehm was happy with Monday’s game, the way the girls played and the atmosphere. “It was a good game,” she said. “Definitely played together. A light atmosphere out there, which was good. We’ve been a little stressed of late. So it was good to see

them relax and play the game like they know how.” The Sharks fell to St. Mary’s on Wednesday, Oct. 22, and had matches Thursday (Oct. 23), and Friday (Oct. 24). They have two left to finish out the season. Sacred Heart will have Senior Night on Monday (Oct. 27) as the Sharks face Nichols at home before Pink Night on Wednesday (Oct. 29), when they’ll host Immaculata.

ment dinner. As such, they’re unable to match the ability of national cable outlets to cover in-depth stories or meet the immediacy of social media. We’re close to a point where an entire generation of local sports fans has never directly experienced the magic of Miller delivering play-byplay (his last Bills game was in 2004), much less a nightly sportscast. Yet the memories get passed down via highlight compilations and stories told by those who fondly recall those heady days. My own memories go back to when Miller hosted “It’s Academic,” a weekly quiz show pitting students from local high schools. My older twin brothers were on the show and it was my first opportunity to meet the man who asked to be called “Uncle Van.” I learned over the years – seeing him repeatedly at Buffalo Braves games in the 1970s and in the Bills and UB press boxes in recent years – that “Uncle Van” is a term EVERYBODY uses. I still call him that to this day, and look forward to

getting his hearty “He-e-e-e-y, buddy!” in reply. It’s kind of ironic, because when you get right down to it, I hardly experienced his Bills broadcasts firsthand. I first discovered the magic of NFL football when Bills games were being broadcast by WKBW Radio and some out-of-towner named Al Meltzer (a respected broadcaster in his own right, but still an out-of-towner). Miller had returned to Bills broadcasts for maybe seven or eight years when I became part of the Bills game-day statistics crew (a position I still hold today). So I never got to hear first-hand signature calls like “Fandemonium” and “Fasten your seat belts!” Not that it matters. The variety of his work is why Van Miller will always remain one of my all-time favorite personalities in local sports history. The recognition he received Sunday was just sweet confirmation that I’m not the only one who feels that way. www.twitter.com/mikehaim

Stallions win a pair The Mite Major Clarence Stallions beat the Centre Wellington, Ont. Fusion on Oct. 19, 3-2. The line of Finn Graham, Alex Fulfaro, and Xavier Thomann scored all three Clarence goals. Thomann’s goal, on passes from Graham and Fulfaro, turned out to be the game-winner. Goaltender Josh Gawron and defensemen Maximus Henning, Drew Idzik, Joey Manguso, Owen McIntyre and Tucker Schoen kept the Fusion

off the scoreboard until late in the third. On Oct. 18, the Stallions defeated West Seneca, 4-1. Idzik opened the scoring with a shot from the point. Liam Graham set up linemate Miles Santa Maria for the next goal, then Santa Maria set up Nic Zivis for the Stallions’ third goal. Thomann assisted for the Stallions fourth goal, which was s by Fulfaro. Gawron held West Seneca scoreless until late in the third period.

PRO FOOTBALL CORNER

FROM the SIDELINES Bills’ Orton getting involved, makes appearance at Doodle Bugs By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR

Having led the Bills to a pair of last-second comeback victories in his first three games under center for them, Kyle Orton has certainly endeared himself to fans in Buffalo of late. He endeared himself to a much younger contingent of fans on Tuesday (Oct. 21). Orton traded in his playbook for a children’s book when he made an appearance at Doodle Bugs! on Red Tail Drive in Orchard Park to read Rosemary Wells’ “Bunny Cakes” to 3- and 4-year-olds at the daycare center. The 10th-year NFL veteran has only been in Buffalo for a couple of months since signing as a free agent at the conclusion of training camp, but he’s already immersed himself in the Buffalo community. “Everything has been great [since coming to Buffalo],” Orton said. “Everyone has been great to us. We live in a great neighborhood and have made a

bunch of friends already. “It’s nice being in a small, close-knit community.” Orton and his wife, Bridget, are tied to Doodle Bugs through their daughter Olivia’s enrollment in the program there. Olivia, 3, was among the many children on hand to listen to Orton read Wells’ tale of a grocery store-bound Bunny on a quest to bake a cake. Orton, who grew up enjoying children’s books like “Curious George” and the “Berenstain Bears”, suggested that it was a gratifying experience. “I love being around kids and anything you can do to help kids is great,” he said. “[Doodle Bugs] has been great to us. Coming to Buffalo late, we got Olivia right into school and she loves it here. “Friday afternoons, I come pick her up here with my wife and it’s the best half-hour of my week. So anything I can do to come and help out I’m going to do.” Orton is one of a flurry of Bills that have gotten involved in the Buffalo community of late. Among

Bills QB Kyle Orton, whose 3-year-old daughter Olivia is a student at Doodle Bugs, read to a group of children at the daycare center on Oct. 21. them, center Eric Wood teamed up with Carly’s Club for a Jocktails event a few weeks ago, Keith Rivers appeared at PS 79 in Buffalo in support of the school’s launch of a Fuel Up to Play 60 campaign, and Brandon Spikes chaired the Buffalo Zoo’s ‘Adopt an Animal’ program and appeared at the zoo for a meet and great with fans in September. Additionally, a host of Bills are involved in the

organization’s ticket donation program and were in Niagara Falls for the Bills’ ‘Pinktober’ event earlier this month. “We have a lot of guys on our team that give back to the community and spend a lot of time and effort doing so,” Orton said. “I think all of our players know it’s important and they do a good job with it.” While Orton and the Bills were off on Tuesday, with a visit to the AFC East’s last-

place 1-6 New York Jets on the horizon Sunday (Oct. 26), it was back to the playbook for them on Wednesday. The team eked out a home victory over Minnesota last week when Orton guided the offense on what seemed like an improbable 80-yard drive in the final minutes that was capped off by top pick Sammy Watkins’ game-winning touchdown reception with 1 second left. It was Orton’s second display of late-game heroics since joining the Bills. He led the team on a lastminute drive against Detroit two weeks ago and helped to set up Dan Carpenter’s game-winning 58yard field goal with 4 seconds left. “Hopefully we don’t have to make it a fourthquarter game all the time and we can play better earlier in the game, but the wins have been exciting,” said Orton, who backed up Tony Romo in Dallas the last two seasons. “They’ve been fun. We’ll take them any way we can get them and hopefully we can keep

on doing it.” It’s possible if Orton continues to put up the numbers he has through three games. In leading the Bills to a 2-1 record since taking over for second-year QB EJ Manuel, Orton’s thrown for 890 yards and five touchdowns, numbers that prorate to over 4,500 yards and 25 touchdowns in a 16-game season. He’s just grateful to have the opportunity to start again. “I love it here,” Orton said. “I’ve made that known and I think everybody in the organization knows how much I appreciate that they’ve brought me in.” The Bills have a chance to improve to 5-3 when they take on the Jets at 1 p.m. inside MetLife Stadium. The Jets have lost six straight since opening the season with a win. Percy Harvin, who New York traded a conditional pick for last week, will make his Jets debut as a receiver and kick returner. The game will be broadcast on CBS.

DeMarsh earns 100th victory, still has one goal in mind By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Nick DeMarsh took over the struggling women’s soccer team at Buffalo State College a dozen years ago with one goal in mind. “I wanted to win the conference and represent this school on the national level at the NCAAs,” said DeMarsh, a three-time All-SUNYAC player for the Bengals who assisted the men’s program for four years prior to becoming the women’s head coach. That has not happened yet. “So we still have some work to do,” DeMarsh is quick to point out. But the program has come a long way under DeMarsh’s direction. DeMarsh entered this weekend’s homestand with 101 career victories. In the 21 seasons prior to

DeMarsh taking over, the Bengals won 114 games. “I have to give a lot of credit to Jerry Boyes, our athletic director, for allowing me to build the program and build the team,” DeMarsh said. “This was a situation that really needed to be built from the ground up.” DeMarsh was teaching at Native American Magnet school and coaching the Bengals part-time during his first two seasons, before Boyes promoted him to a full-time coaching position. “When you are a part-time coach, you are going to get part-time results,” DeMarsh said. “We really didn’t start winning until I got the job fulltime.” The Bengals have posted winning records in seven of the past 11 seasons, and last year finished second in the SUNYAC. With a very young roster this

season, the Bengals are 6-7-1 and 3-4 in conference play. Buffalo State hosts New Paltz (8-6-2, 2-3-2) at 3 p.m. Friday. A win would solidify the Bengals at sixth place in the SUNYAC standings and keep them out of the play-in round of the postseason tournament. “We want to take it one game at a time, and really, all that matters for us is our next game,” DeMarsh said. Buffalo State hosts defending champion Oneonta at 10 a.m. Saturday and wraps up the regular season Oct. 29 with a non-conference home game against St. John Fisher. When DeMarsh took over the Bengals program he had players who weren’t even starters on their high school teams. DeMarsh, who lives in North Buffalo and is the director of coaching for the Kenmore Soccer Club, has

Nick DeMarsh has 101 career coaching wins. extended his recruiting range throughout the state and into New Jersey – and even has one player on the team from California.

But the Bengals are captained by local recruits in senior Liz Malinowski (Williamsville South) and junior Gabrianna Boldinski (Ken-

more East). “Liz came to us with great experience in terms of highlevel club soccer and has really learned the ropes of college soccer,” DeMarsh said. “She’s a very smart player, a good student, and a good example for our younger players.” Boldinski is “probably the best center defender in the SUNYAC,” DeMarsh said. “She’s an absolute monster of a ball-winner. I could probably player her at any position on the field.” Sophomrore midfielder Katie Shaw (Newfane) has been key contributor for the Bengals this year and is pushing to be a captain next season, DeMarsh said. With 100 wins in his review mirror, DeMarsh has no plans to stop before he reaches his ultimate goal. “I’m pretty stubborn,” he said. “I would never leave the job undone.”

Simonick inducted into Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame By Catherine Miller

THE SUN CORRESPONDENT

It’s a good time to be a sports fan in Buffalo. The Pegula family has made more headlines than money recently – and the players on the Bills and Sabres are doing their best to make their owners proud. As Buffalo’s name rises to the top pages of nationwide sports news outlets, the newest group of local sports honorees were inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame on Oct 16 – and one of the inductees was the Old First Ward’s Robert “Rip” Simonick. By many measures, Rip Simonick has led a fairly basic life. He grew up in the Old First Ward amidst a great group of family and friends and attended Bishop Timon High School. He married the

love of his life, MaryAnn “Maize” McGuire, a Mount Mercy Academy alumni. He took a job just a few blocks away from his childhood home and has worked for the same company for the past 44 years, presently living about a half-hour from his original place of birth. Pretty standard by most counts. So why, then, when you ask a man like former Sabre Rob Ray to tell you one thing about Simonick, he just throws his hands up in the air and tells you that it’s impossible to say just one thing? Simonick doesn’t work for just any company. Simonick, known to many, is the head equipment manager of the Buffalo Sabres. He has designed specialized gear for players when they were in need, learned players’ preferences on how they liked their skates sharpened, and when equipment

was all set and they just needed someone to talk to – Simonick was there. What you may not realize is that Simonick has been with the Sabres since day one – and has never left – becoming the most skilled and tenured equipment manager in the league. He was there for the ups – like his favorite seasons in 1975 and 1999 – and he refuses to talk about the lows of the “no goal” days. Rip’s knowledge and expertise in the NHL goes well beyond his title as head equipment manager for the Sabres. “Rip is just a tremendous guy,” said Rob Ray of the man he introduced at the awards banquet for the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. “Everybody in the NHL franchise knows him and everyone respects him. He is the father of the fran-

chise.” Ray continued to share personal thoughts on his admiration for the man that knew exactly what equipment Ray needed to play and the words he needed to hear before heading onto the ice. “We were rookies together,” stated Gilbert Perreault, who took center ice in 1970 as Rip stood behind the scenes making sure the players had all they needed to play in the Sabres’ inaugural season, “Rip was a great guy then, and he’s a great guy now.” Other hockey names mimicked the views of Ray and Perreault. Ray rattled off dozens of other NHL names that look up to Simonick, the renowned equipment guru. Ice manager Bob Strianese and Digger Kennedy, father of NHL player Tim Kennedy, both spoke highly of their friendship with Si-

monick. Much of Simonick’s family still lives in the Old First Ward, and many attended the GBSHOF awards dinner, sharing similar thoughts on the greatness of Simonick. He had more family and friends attend the awards dinner than any other inductee. Simonick never stepped out on a professional field in uniform, never scored the winning goal and was never nominated as an MVP. Still, his name is known in the sports industry better than most and for more decades than many, and he is the only member of the NHL franchise to work from day one to today. Many NHLers state that it’s Simonick’s personality that makes him unique. In addition to his equipment expertise, it is his ability to listen when players need listening to that endears him

to so many. And if you ask Simonick – he believes he’s important to the game on a very basic level. “Hey, you can’t play the game without equipment,” Simonick said with a smile. Whether talking about hockey or life in general, Simonick is correct – and he has definitely brought forth the right equipment to help bring out the best in our players from the days of the French Connection, to the seasons when Ray and Brad May battled in corners with opposing players, to the present-day Pegula era. With everything that he has given to the game of hockey, there is one thing that he would like to get from it in return, and that is to see Lord Stanley’s Cup in Buffalo. But for now, he’s content to join a host of great names in the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame.

Wendy Liebman’s got talent

By: Lauren Kirchmyer Did you watch this past season of “America’s Got Talent?” If you said yes, you probably have heard of standup comedian Wendy Liebman. After being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the show, judge Howard Stern selected Liebman as his wild card, allowing her to appear on the show one more time. Though it was magician Mat Franco who won season 9 of the competition, Liebman was able to bring her already successful career to new heights. The Long Island native’s stand-up career began after graduating from Wellesley College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She performed research at Harvard Medical School and worked as the assistant to the director at a fellowship program at Radcliffe College. One day,

Her comedy has allowed her to open for big-name stars like Ray Charles and Reba McEntire, and in 1996 she received the American Comedy Award Liebman decided to look into for Best Female Standup. I better pack a parka,” Liebman joked. “I heard the people there are the nicest. I’m looking forward to entertaining them. I heard the food is pretty good too. Any food is good as long as I’m not cooking it.” Her show will contain new material as well as a lot of jokes about her parents, husband and two stepsons. “They’re always trying to help me come up with new jokes about themselves,” Liebman said. Besides performing standup around the country, Liebman and her husband, Jeff, are currently writing a musical about stand-up comedy titled “Home on Tuesday.” “My husband is very musical,” Liebman said. Jeff’s father and uncle, The Sherman Brothers, wrote music for many famous Disney films. Liebman on the other hand is new to this side of the entertainment industry. “I was writing songs and didn’t know where they came from. The collaboration brought it out of me.” To learn more about Liebman, visit www.wendyliebman.com or follow her on Twitter (@WendyLiebman).
