Alex Wood on even keel after first-game loss By Mike Haim COLUMNIST

Angelo Marzullo has been Clarence’s “most explosive player” according to head coach Mark Layer.
‘Explosive’ Marzullo brings confidence to Clarence By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER
Angelo Marzullo has a healthy balance of confidence and talent. That combination has helped the running back earn a starting role on the Clarence Red Devils this year and never look back. Marzullo believes that he
brings positive energy to the team as well as the ability to make big plays when needed. “I feel like I brought a lot of positive energy, making plays for the team,” Marzullo said. His coach had a few more things to say about the kind of player Marzullo is. “Angelo has been our most explosive player,” coach Mark Layer said. “He has had big plays running the ball, catching the ball and in the return game on both punts and kick offs. He has great speed and is an elusive runner who has great vision. He sets up and cuts off of blocks with great instinct. He is a
real talent and someone we are focused on getting the ball to in multiple ways.” It wasn’t always that way for Marzullo. He didn’t have as big of a role at the beginning of the season, but as he showed Layer and the other coaches what he could bring to the team, Marzullo’s role increased. “When I did get my opportunities to play, I gave it my all and I showed the coaches that I deserved a chance to start on the field,” Marzullo said. Still, he wishes he could have done more early on. “I wish I had more op-
portunities in the beginning of the season to start, but as the season went on, things started changing,” Marzullo said. “I’m happy that I got my opportunity to play.” He grabbed hold of that opportunity and used those instincts Layer talked about to have a very successful season. Marzullo had 870 allpurpose yards. No one else on the Red Devils came close, nor did they come close to Marzullo’s 10 touchdowns, one of them on a kick return.

It’s common, just before embarking on a new venture, for someone to have that unmistakable combination of excitement and dread. The excitement comes from looking forward to the opportunity to try something unique and perhaps succeed beyond anyone’s expectations. The dread comes from the uncertainty about potential failure and being unable to perform the task at hand. That combination doesn’t seem to apply to Alex Wood, the interim head coach of the University at Buffalo football program. After finding himself on the losing end of a 20-14 score against Central Michigan in his first game at the helm last Saturday, the 59-year old came across as unflappable. Wood, you see, is a true football veteran. He had already logged 11 years of being an assistant coach at six different colleges when he took over as wide receivers coach with the Miami Hurricanes in 1989. Yep, those Miami Hurricanes, the team that won two national championships in Wood’s tenure there (in 1989 and 1991) and posted a perfect 12-0 record in claiming the second title. The native of Massillon, Ohio (the birthplace of football, need you be reminded) eventually became a collegiate head coach at James Madison (from 1995 to 1998) and spent six years as an NFL assistant, including being offensive coordinator for the 2004 Arizona Cardinals. So, 12 days after replacing the fired Jeff Quinn at UB, Wood hardly seemed excited when asked if he was glad to finally get a game out of the way: “We’d much rather have won the game. It’s good to go play, absolutely, to go compete after the time off and the transition that took place.” His reaction to the loss
itself, which crippled UB’s chances of a second straight bowl bid, was slightly more emotional: “It didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to. We still have a great deal to play for, and we’ll get our players ready to take on that challenge.” While Wood doesn’t have the distant and dismissive public demeanor of New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick (or the hockey world’s John Tortorella), he’s a far cry from giving off the frenetic energy of Quinn. I’m sure Wood gets as fired up as anyone when it comes to the inner workings of football, but after this many years of being around the game, it’s understandable that he won’t make much of it available for display. That might be a good thing for UB right now. There were surely moments where Quinn’s breathlessness was exhausting. Wood appears to view the adversity of a 3-5 record as a learning experience while willingly caretaking a program which has embarked on a national search for its next head coach. Sure there was some awkwardness on Saturday, as the Bulls’ Senior Day ceremonies featured a head coach congratulating players with whom he never had total control. But if senior center Trevor Sales is any indication, the players have rallied around Wood and refuse to believe that 2014 has become a lost season. UB resumes its schedule next Tuesday with a primetime matchup at Ohio. After that come two prime-time home games against Akron and Kent State, followed by a Black Friday tilt at UMass. “Our backs are up against the wall, but we’re not going to hide in the corner and cry about it,” Sales said. “I have four games left in my life to play. We’re going to come out swinging and we’re going to finish this thing strong. There’s going to be some fun ones to watch, so stay tuned.”
Sacred Heart stuns Nichols in MMAA semis
By Dave Ricci
SPORTS REPORTER
The Sharks weren’t short on heroes on Oct. 25. Sarah Krieger scored the game-winner and Cara Manzella made the biggest save of her career as No. 3 Sacred Heart erased a 2-0 deficit to beat No. 2 Nichols, 4-3, in penalty kicks in their Monsignor Martin Athletic Association semifinal game that was played at Nichols Strauss-Truscott Field.
The win vaults the Sharks into the championship game, in which they will play top seed and defending league champion Nardin next Sunday (Nov. 3) at Niagara University. Nardin punched its ticket to the title game with an overtime win over Mt. Mercy. “This is a team with a lot of heart,” said SHA assistant coach Karen Lawton. “They will outwork every team that is more skilled than them. They will be the hardest working team. They will work until the very last second.” That’s exactly what the Sharks did. Both teams scored on each of their first two penalty kicks. But while
Nichols failed on its third and fourth attempts, the Sharks’ shots were true. Sarah Krieger scored on the Sharks’ fourth Pk to give her team the 4-2 edge as Nichols’ fourth shooter, Lindsey Hogan, stepped in needing a goal to keep the game alive. Hogan drilled the ball low, but Manzella’s diving save to her left secured the win, as the Sharks poured onto the field to mob their keeper. “We’re ecstatic right now. We’re so excited,” Manzella said minutes after the win. “We worked hard this entire game, through the overtimes. Even until the end of the shootout.”

Clarence girls survive scare, advance to sectional final By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER
As undefeated Clarence faced Niagara-Wheatfield in Tuesday’s (Oct. 28) girls soccer sectional semifinals, expectations were high for Clarence. But the Falcons didn’t go down without a fight. Niagara-Wheatfield held onto a 1-0 lead for most of the game until Clarence scored two goals in the final minutes of the game for a 2-1 win. Clarence coach Tom Furminger said his team was confident coming in but knew that Niagara-Wheatfield would be a tough opponent.
“We like our team and we like our chances to win, but we knew Niagara-Wheatfield was going to be a great test, and they were,” Furminger said. “This could have very easily gone the other way, but I thought our kids played very very well.” Niagara-Wheatfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 10:44 into the first half. Danielle Chatten scored the goal on a breakaway as Clarence was unable to defend. The Falcons’ strong defense held onto that 1-0 lead for the rest of the first half and most of the second. Although they had trouble getting the ball out of their own end, they limited Clarence’s shots to hold the 1-0 lead. “I thought Niagara-Wheatfield played a heck of a game,” Furminger said. “They defended absolutely brilliantly.” Clarence finally found a

Shannon Carr (18) scored the game-winning goal with 19 seconds left to beat Niagara-Wheatfield. way to score with just over seven minutes left in the second xhalf. After a few shots wide and high, it was Sydney Cerza who scored
the game-tying goal with 7:21 left. Shannon Carr assisted the goal. As time ran down, the game stayed tied. It looked as
though the game would go to overtime. But Shannon Carr had other ideas. With just 19.3 seconds left on the clock, Carr scored the go-ahead goal to give the Red Devils the 2-1 win. Cerza picked up the assist. Clarence fought for the win, and Furminger was happy with his team’s play, especially in the second half. “I thought the whole second half we played great,” he said. “We had a bunch of chances, and we just had to find a way to get it done. Syd [Cerza] scored in the 83rd minute and then the pressure they had there with Shannon finding a foot on it to get that winner with 19 seconds. They battled through it. They were great.” Other key players for Clarence tonight included Amanda Burns, Lauren Cullinan, Alex Wolfe, Anna Davies and Hannah Spitzer.
“After that first goal, Hannah closed down their big scoring threat,” Furminger said, referring to Chatten. “In the back they played well, but our forwards really did the line share of the work. They really worked hard to get chances and finally finish off the game.” Carr was moved up to play instead of her usual position as midfielder, and she obviously embraced the role with her goal and assist. Clarence always expects to win, Furminger said, but Tuesday’s game was a combination of fighting hard and luck. “They fought through it, we changed some positions, they put a ton of pressure on, and the expectation is always to do our best and win the game,” Furminger said. “And with some luck, that’s how it panned out for us.”
Junior identifies kickoff return against Niagara Falls as a personal highlight “Marzullo” from page B1
JEFFREY T. BARNES
Angelo Marzullo, right, was a dual-threat running back for the Red Devils. “I was so successful because I stuck with it,” Marzullo said, “and I rode the ups and downs as the season went on. I just played like I know how to play no matter what.” The highlight of the season for Marzullo was the
win over Niagara Falls on Oct. 18. It was in that game that Marzullo returned a kick for a touchdown. Both Marzullo and Layer knew that it would happen eventually. “I kept saying to him, ‘The next one, the next one, the
next one,’ and he got one,” Layer said following the game. “It was destined to happen,” Marzullo said. “All season I was getting stopped, and we finally set up a plan to get it back in, and I caught that ball and
the hole opened up and it was just there. And it just finally happened.” Although Clarence’s 2-5 record isn’t what Marzullo and his teammates were expecting or hoping for going into the season, he’s happy with the way they played. “We still played as a team through the season and we stuck together, and altogether we grew as a team,” Marzullo said. “We didn’t do as good as we expected we were going to do, but it doesn’t really matter how good we did. It was just that we stuck together through the whole season and no one ever quit or backed down.” Marzullo is a junior this year, so he has another year with Clarence before he goes on to “go to a good college, play for a good competitive team, and get a good education.” As for next year, Marzullo has an optimistic though realistic outlook. He knows it won’t be easy, but with him on the team as well as a few other talented juniors and players coming up from JV, he’s hopeful. “We’re still going to have to battle some pretty good teams, but we have a lot of good players coming up on JV and lot of upcoming juniors that are playing again that are going to be good,” Marzullo said. “It’s still gonna be a battle. We’ll have to see how it works out.”
Manzella makes key saves for Sharks throughtout course of contest “Sharks” from page B1 Manzella’s heroics are even more impressive when you consider she stepped into the role of starter after No. 1 keeper Alexandra Dwyer’s season was cut short about five weeks ago because of a knee injury. “She has worked and trained and has done everything she could to be the best goalie she can be,” said Lawton. “And today it showed.” Manzella not only came up with the big save in the shootout, she made huge saves during the course of the game that enabled the Sharks to rally. Manzella made back-to-back saves from point blank range with
just under five minutes to play in the first half to keep the game at 2-2. Nichols dominated play throughout the bulk of the first half and goals by Emma Elia and McCaeley O’Rourke staked the Vikings to a 2-0 lead. The Sharks, meanwhile, didn’t create as many opportunities. They simply made the most of their scoring chances as Taylor DiMarco pulled her team within a goal when she drove the ball over the reach of Nichols starting keeper Paige Kouimanis midway through the first half. DiMarco would tie the game with 8:26 to play in
the half when she made a nifty move to fake out the Nichols defense. Elia’s second goal of the day put Nichols up 3-2 with 11:46 to play in regulation. Clinging to that 3-2 lead as the final minute ticked away, it appeared as if the Vikings would outlast the Sharks. But Sacred Heart showed absolutely no quit and Madison Koons poked the game-tying goal past Elena Kotrides with 34 seconds left to play to force the OT. The teams played to a pair of scoreless 10 minute overtime periods before the game, for no explained reason, skipped the two, five
minute OT’s and went right to PKs. For the Vikings, the game was a microcosm of their up-and-down season. They certainly have the talent, but they never seemed to harness that all-important consistency and the ability to put an opponent away early. As Nichols coach Larry Desautels walked off the field understandably shocked and dejected, he lamented how another one got away, at the worst of times. “It was an appropriate ending to the season,” he said. “That’s how our whole season went.”

Sacred Heart falls to Bears, has chance at redemption By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER
The Sacred Heart volleyball team played a very competitive game Wednesday night (October 29) against Immaculata Academy at home but came out a 3-1 loser. Each game was decided by five points or less except for Sacred Heart’s lone win. The first game was the closest. The Sharks and Bears traded leads for almost the entire game until Immaculata picked up four straight points at the end for a 26-24 win. Each of those points came when Sacred Heart hit the ball out. The Sharks weren’t about to let that happen again. They jumped out to an early 11-5 lead and never looked back. The Bears made it close but never managed up, and the Sharks scored six straight points at the end of the game to win, 25-16. Although Sacred Heart had leads of 10-4 and 18-11, the Sharks weren’t able to hold on and lost another close game by a score of 25-20 to give the Bears a 2-1 lead in the match. The fourth game was close again, of course, but the Bears again came out the 25-20 leaders. That was after Sacred Heart and Immaculata traded leads back and forth for much of the game. Sacred Heart coach Allison Boehm said her team has been playing much better lately. They’ve been much more unified, especially in the last few matches. “The last couple days, we’ve been playing better,” Boehm said after the game. “Better on the court as a team instead of little islands like we like to
call it. I think this was probably our most competitive game that we’ve had all season, so that’s definitely some positive things.” Communication was something Boehm mentioned last week that the team has improved on, and she said that tonight the Sharks continued to improve. However, when the communication wasn’t there, that was when the team struggled. “There’s glimmers of it,” Boehm said. “I think some of our problem today was when the communication was lacking. And they know that, so we just gotta clean that up a little bit. It’s getting better.” The match against Immaculata was definitely a team effort for the Sharks to play as competitively as they did and keep each game so close. Boehm mentioned a few girls who she believed were key players in the game while giving credit to the entire team. “The middles always step up, the centers, so that’s Kathleen and Micaela Ryan,” Boehm said. “In every little facet of the game though, you can pick out someone. Mia [Wild] and Martha [Saltarelli] in the back row, the outsides getting the ball over, really a team effort and that’s why we’re playing better.” Next up for Sacred Heart is a playoff game on Saturday (Nov. 1). The Sharks will again face Immaculata, and Boehm said they’ll be looking for redemption. “Good thing about tonight is we have to play them again on Saturday,” Boehm said. “We play them in the first round of the playoffs, so we’re hoping to get some redemption against them.” Until then, the Sharks will work on communication and prepare to play another competitive match so that they can come out the winners on Saturday.

THE COLLEGE UB women clinch regular season MAC championship ••• Russell Cicerone was named MAC men’s soccer player of the week after leading UB to two wins last week. Cicerone, a sophomore who starred for the local FC Buffalo squad last summer, had two goals and two assists in a 4-0 win over St. Bonaventure and netted both goals in a win over Northern Illinois. He currently ranks second in the MAC with 10 goals and 23 points. The Bulls (5-8-2, 1-02) play a non-conference
game at West Virginia this weekend. ••• The Buffalo State women’s soccer team picked up a win over New Paltz and a draw against defending SUNYAC champion Oneonta to claim the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament. Gabrianna Boldinski (Kenmore East) had an assist in the 2-1 win over New Paltz. The Bengals will play at Fredonia on Saturday in the quarterfinals. Fredonia won 1-0 at Buffalo State on Oct. 4.

Courtney Mann had a special feeling about the University at Buffalo women’s soccer team all the way back in preseason training. She turned out to be right. UB clinched the MidAmerican Conference regular season championship last weekend with a 2-0 victory over Miami (Ohio). Mann, a Frontier graduate and fourth-year starter in the midfield, was one of eight seniors honored on the field at UB Stadium prior to the game. “What a tremendous accomplishment for the girls,” UB coach Shawn Burke said. “I am so
proud of their effort and to clinch against one of the top teams in the MAC says a lot about our team.” The Bulls (12-2-3, 8-0-2 MAC) will look to finish unbeaten in conference play for the first time ever when they host Akron on Thursday (Oct. 30). UB will enter the MAC championship tournament as the No. 1 seed and host a quarterfinal game Sunday at UB Stadium. Riding a nine-game unbeaten streak, UB has also jumped up to 47th in the NCAA Ratings Percentage Index, a high watermark for the program. “Our current RPI ranking is recognition for all their hard work and dedication to attain our ultimate goal of an NCAA
Tournament appearance,” Burke said. UB last won a MAC regular season title in 2000 but has never won the MAC tournament or qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Burke is in his first season as UB’s head coach after five seasons as an assistant. When Burke first joined the UB program after two years on the men’s staff at Canisius, he made recruiting Mann one of his first priorities. Mann, one of the Bulls senior captains, has provided steady leadership throughout the season. “In eight years of coaching in college, she is one of the best athletes I’ve worked with,” Burke said. “She literally never takes a day off. Not in
training, or in games. For the past four years, one centerpiece has been her being in that lineup every day.” Other locals on the UB roster included sophomore defender Rachel Cook (Williamsville South) and senior goalkeeper Sarah Moore (Orchard Park). Freshman goalkeeper Laura Dougall has a goals-against average of 0.36, a .915 saver percentage and 11 shutouts, ranking first in the MAC and in the top five nationally in all three categories. Sophomore Katie Roberts leads the MAC with 10 goals and 22 points. Celina Carrero has six goals, including three game-winners, and 17 points.

Bulls fall in Wood’s first game as head coach By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
Changing coaches couldn’t reverse the course of the University at Buffalo’s football season. And neither could a standout game from senior linebacker Adam Redden (St. Francis). After firing head coach
Jeff Quinn and promoting offensive coordinator Alex Wood, the Bulls had their worst offensive performance of the season Saturday in a 20-13 home loss to Central Michigan. UB (3-5, 1-3) has now lost three straight in the Mid-American Conference and must win its final four regular season games to become bowl eligible.
The Bulls gained just 38 yards rushing on the day. Running back Anthone Taylor had a season-low 25 yards after coming into the game ranked 10th in the country in rushing yards. “They rendered us to be one-dimensional offensively, and when that happens, it’s tough to win,” Woods said. Redden, who grew up in
Buffalo and Amherst, did his best to keep the Bulls in the game. The senior linebacker had 10 tackles (3.5 for loss), to sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to earn MAC East defensive player of the week honors. Redden created a turnover on his first sack that led to UB’s first touchdown after the Bulls had fallen be-
hind 14-0 in the early going. A third-team all-MAC pick as a junior, Redden is on his way to earning allconference honors again this season. He leads the MAC in tackles for loss with 12 and is second with three forced fumbles. He has 55 tackles this year and a team-high five sacks. Quarterback Joe Licata (Williamsville South)
threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns Saturday. He passed Joe Freedy to move into fourth in school history with 5,994 career passing yards. The Bulls play next Wednesday at Ohio. UB’s remaining home games at both weeknight matchups, Nov. 11 against Akron and Nov. 19 against Kent State.
Bengals lose to Utica, need win this week to regain first place By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
The Buffalo State football team’s NCAA Tournament aspirations took a major hit Saturday with a home loss to Utica. Off to their best start since 1999 and sitting atop the Empire 8 standings for the first time, the Bengals turned the
ball over three times in the 31-21 loss. Buffalo State (5-2, 3-2) now visits nationally-ranked St. John Fisher needing a win to regain first place in the Empire 8 standings. The conference champion automatically qualifies for the NCAA Tournament. Another loss would also likely take the Bengals out of consideration for an at-large
berth. Mike Doherty (Kenmore East) led the Buffalo State offense with five catches for 165 yards and a 40-yard touchdown that gave the Bengals an early 7-0 lead. Utica went up 24-7 by halftime before John Alessandra (Kenmore East) recovered a fumble that led to a Rich Pete touchdown, bringing the Bengals within
10 points. Quarterback Kyle Hoppy (Orchard Park) fumbled on Buffalo State’s next possession, however, and Utica would take advantage of the opportunity to push its lead up to 31-14. Dan Serignese relieved Hoppy at quarterback in the fourth quarter and connected with Doherty on a 50-yard gain before finding Ryan
Carney (Olean) for an 8-yard touchdown pass that brought the Bengals within 31-21 with 7:16 remaining. But Buffalo State couldn’t get any closer, and in the process, gave up pole position in the Empire 8 title race. St. John Fisher, coached by Lockport native Paul Vosburgh, is coming off a 61-0 win over Alfred State. James Chambers (Lockport) scored
his third touchdown of the season in the win, and Sammy Hasan (Williamsville South) recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score. The Cardinals are ranked 15th in the latest D3football. com poll. Buffalo State is no longer receiving any votes after getting top 25 consideration the past two weeks.

Ken-East band director in running for Grammy Award By: Lauren Kirchmyer It has been said that Kenmore East High School has one of the best music programs around, and the students and faculty of the school point to Phil Aguglia as the reason why. “I was one of those awkward kids who didn’t really fit into a lot of places,” Aguglia said. “I struggled a lot but it was through band that I found a place. It became part of who I was.” He started taking trumpet lessons, an instrument his dad played, in fifth grade at Southside Elementary School in Buffalo. During his sophomore year at Hutchinson Central Technical High School, his band director allowed him to work with and help other students. Seeing his peers succeed because of his help filled him with satisfaction. “No matter what my personal successes were, I felt more accomplished when people I worked with did well. That’s why I wanted to be a teacher,” Aguglia said. He went on to receive a bachelor’s in music education from Ithaca College and a master’s in music with a focus in education from SUNY Fredonia. He taught in Massachusetts, followed by West Valley, before making his back to Western New York to teach middle and high school band for Cleveland Hill Union Free School District in Cheektowaga. “He took a program that was in its infancy with very basic skills and turned them into a very respected band and music program in Western New York, all on his own,” said Joseph Greco, who started with Aguglia at Cleveland Hill around 1997 and currently is the assistant principal at Kenmore East High School. “He put in hours after school, weekends, working with kids for extremely long hours.” And his ways haven’t changed. In 2002, Aguglia moved to Kenmore East. His workday starts at 7 a.m. and
sometimes goes until 10 p.m. He is in charge of wind ensemble, concert band, three jazz bands, two jazz combos, several small chamber groups, individual lessons as well as pep band. He puts in around 70 hours each week. He will even work on weekends and during the summer to make sure his students are getting the best music education. “I run a different kind of program, it’s a little non-traditional,” he said. When students are not in class with Aguglia, they are allowed to go into his classroom and work on material including chords, scales and rhythms. “Great things happen when you allow this flexibility.” “The way he teaches things is indescribable,” said Isabelle Bertino, a senior at Kenmore West High School. “You’re not just learning something you have to memorize, he makes sure you can understand it, which is what a lot of teachers are not capable of doing.” Last year, the Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation introduced the Grammy Music Educator Award. It only takes one nomination to apply for the award. Aguglia received about 60 nomination emails, but he didn’t pursue. When the competition opened for 2015, Aguglia’s email was flooded with nominations once again and he decided to give it a chance. This year about 30,000 people were nominated for the award. Approximately 7,000 people followed the link in the email to fill out the application. From there, 222 music educators from around the country were selected for the quarterfinals. Aguglia is now one of only 25 people who remain in the competition. “It’s humbling,” Aguglia said. “I’ve won a lot of awards, but it doesn’t mean anything to me unless what’s happening in here, in the classroom, is working.” “He’s a big part of why Kenmore East is successful,” Greco added. “I don’t know
anyone who works any harder. He’s extremely well deserving, and I know I speak for the entire school.” Aguglia made sure to include the entire school in his nomination process in return. When he found out he was one of 25 who remained in the competition, he had to film videos answering questions about why he was deserving of the award. Besides showing video clips and pictures of his students past and present, Aguglia shared in his videos how he brings in guest artists, allows his students to perform throughout Western New York and travel to places like Las Vegas and Disney World, recruits students through unique programs, proposes ideas to the school district to receive new instruments, and is involved with charitable and educational organizations such as Music is Art. He even had busloads of students collect instruments and volunteer in New Orleans, La. after Hurricane Katrina hit. “One thing that is important to me is that my students understand there is a bigger world out there,” Aguglia said. “It’s not about what just happens in this room. I say to them, ‘Leave a footprint bigger than your own so when you graduate there’s something they remember you by,’ and I’m never disappointed.” Should he win the Grammy Award, he would receive a $10,000 honorarium. Kenmore East’s Music Department would receive $6,000 through the Ford Drive 4 UR School program and a $10,000 grant, allowing Aguglia to start an artist in residence program at the school and let the students work with a mentor, a professional from the music industry. “The help we would get from the Grammy Awards wouldn’t just be used towards anything it’s for us, for the students, and Mr. A always puts his students before himself or anything else,” Bertino said. “I truly believe he deserves this award.”
Tips to help you personalize your kitchen (NAPSI)—If your family is like most, it’s not like any other, and your kitchen shouldn’t be either. Every family has its own distinct requirements for the kitchen. Fortunately, a few simple steps can help you personalize your cooking and cleaning space to make it work best for you. Some ideas to personalize your kitchen workspace: • While a monochrome look can be sophisticated and serene, a few pops of color in curtains, cushions, door and drawer pulls can set it off and point it up. • Use your kitchen to show off your style. If you collect saltshakers, say, display them on open or glassfronted shelves. Display your grandmother’s famous pie recipe in a frame. • It’s a bright idea to look to the lighting. There should be task lighting, accent lighting to highlight a special feature, and general overhead light. Try a bright spotlight in the kitchen over the sink or stove.

They say adversity makes you stronger and CASPER has had a lot of adversity to deal with out on the street. He came running up to one of our volunteers when we were doing TNVR in Buffalo. It was like he was saying ‘take me, take me...’ and we did! He is mildly positive for FIV, is a real lover and has green eyes as big as his gentle heart... please consider adding him to your home. He is good with other kitties. CASPER qualifies for our “Special Kitties for Special Peopleâ€? adoption promotion. If you would like more information, call Second Chance Sheltering Network at 652-6051. Christmas in the Country returns to fairgrounds with new ‘return pass’ offer
Lower cooling costs, increase energy efficiency (NAPSI)—Energy prices in California are among the highest in the nation. Fortunately, homeowners in the Golden State and across the country can beat the heat at home and in their wallets with spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation. “SPF can make your home more comfortable by reducing air leaks and energy consumption, which is good for the environment and good for California,” says Brian West, Director of Marketing at Henry Company, based in El Segundo, California. According to the California Energy Commission, heating and cooling accounts for 45 percent of the average energy bill for California households. SPF insulation helps keep outside air from entering the home and prevents loss of conditioned indoor air by sealing cracks, seams and joints. Energy savings from SPF can be significant. An estimated 10 percent of California’s newly constructed single-family homes in 2013 were insulated with SPF. These SPF-insulated homes help reduce CO2 emissions and are expected to remove greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those emitted by 2,700 cars. The annual estimated electricity savings add up to $3.3 million. SPF will also play a key role in California’s goal of zero net energy consumption for all new homes beginning in 2020. SPF insulation can provide additional benefits: • SPF can help reduce mold and mildew growth; • SPF seals cracks and helps keep pollen and dust outside, reducing allergens; • As a roofing material on low-sloped or flat surfaces, SPF creates a seamless air and weather barrier, which is critical beneath roof-mounted solar panels; and • Cool-roof coatings can also be easily applied over roofs.

A favorite Western New York tradition, the Christmas in the Country Holiday Artisan Market will celebrate its 30th season when it returns to the Hamburg Fairgrounds Nov. 6-9. And for the first time in its storied history, Christmas in the Country will offer complimentary return passes so patrons can enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of this one-of-akind shopping experience all weekend long. “We have always felt our patrons needed more than just one day to properly enjoy this event,” said Daniel Kaczynski of Premier Promotions, organizers of the event. “Now everyone has the opportunity to come back as much as they would like at no additional cost.” This year, Christmas in the Country will welcome more than 400 artisans spread out over five buildings. Attendees will find unique handcrafted creations made in the USA, including home decor, gourmet foods and wine, original music, trendsetting jewelry, hand-poured aromatic candles, children’s toys and clothing, stylish pottery, original wall art, gifts for pets and

people of this community,” Kaczynski said. “Many of the artisans also donate products for auctions and raffles.” In 2013, Christmas in the Country was recognized as the No. 2 contemporary and classic artisan market in the nation by Sunshine Artist, the leading publication in the art and craft event industry. The event has ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in the nation for the past 11 years. Celebrating its 30th anniversary and drawing almost 60,000 visitors over four days and featuring only handmade products made in the United States, the event is widely recognized today as the preeminent holiday artisan market in North America. The economic impact of this event is formidable. Restaurants and hotels benefit significantly from patrons and artisans traveling to the event, while local artisans typically mark Christmas in the Country as their highest grossing event of the year. “The artisans really represent the very best of our country’s small businesses — hardworking, ingenious and determined. To see Western New York support them to
this extent is very gratifying,” Kaczynski added. Christmas in the Country will run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 6 and 7, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 8 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Fairgrounds in Hamburg. Discount tickets are available through Wednesday, Nov. 5 at select locations through Erie County. For a complete list of locations visit www.wnypremierpromotions.com. For more than 30 years, Premier Promotions has produced high quality, extremely successful artisan events including Springtime in the Country, Christmas in the Country, Christmas in the CountryErie and Yuletide in the Country. The events are consistently ranked among the Top 100 artisan shows in America by Sunshine Artist magazine. Last year, more than 90,000 visitors attended these events purchasing more than $4.5 million in high quality, handcrafted goods from juried artists and artisans. These events have also helped raise more than $1.4 million for Western New York charities.

holiday gift items galore. “This is an opportunity to make gift buying and shopping very meaningful,” said Sally Kaczynski, founder of Premier Promotions. “The selection of products at this market is comprehensive; there is truly something for everyone.” Christmas in the Country will welcome many new artisans this year, as well as favorites from year’s past. “We find new artisans and a lot of time, they find us because this is an excellent opportunity for them,” Kaczynski said. “We want to continue to make the event fresh and new, but still keep the favorite artisans and traditions here.” Throughout the 30-year history of Christmas in the Country, giving back to the community has always been an integral part of the event. This year, participating non-profit groups will include Kathleen Mary House, Churches in Action, Hamburg Eden Animal Rescue Team (H.E.A.R.T.), Variety — The Children’s Charity of Buffalo and the Hamburg Presbyterian Church. “Helping those in need has always been who we are, both as a company and
