The Williamsville North girls soccer team’s season came to a close in the

Section VI Class AA title game as it fell to Clarence, 2-0, Saturday (Nov. 1) at Amherst High School. Despite not managing to put a ball behind Clarence goalkeeper Marah O’Connor, the Spartans walked away from the defeat feeling like they had done everything they could have possibly done, and they had given every-

thing they had. “I thought our kids played well today, despite not getting the result that we wanted in the winloss column,” head coach Doug Kircher said. “We went up against a very good team that defeated us twice earlier this year and held our own against them, for the most part. They definitely controlled

the play and possession a lot, but up until their second goal, we were still in it.” Similarly, Red Devils coach Tom Furminger also felt that his team played well, but said that it was more a case of survival rather than domination of an opponent. “It was tough to get this win today because of the

weather and turf conditions, but we survived against a pretty solid opponent,” Furminger said. “Even though we got the first goal, I felt like we didn’t have a whole lot of momentum because (Will. North) was playing just as well as us. We got much better in the second half, and our defensive play picked up too.”

The Red Devils struck quickly on their first goal as forward Sydney Cerza deflected a corner kick by Shannon Carr into the net early in the first half. Cerza then clinched the victory for the Red Devils with another goal in the second half.

Sacred Heart soccer upsets Nardin Clarence girls keep composure, win in Monsignor Martin finals volleyball crown

The Sacred Heart Academy girls soccer team has, according to head coach Amy Drozen, been set on establishing itself as one of the premier programs in all of Western New York this fall. The Sharks took a major step forward in doing so by punctuating a strong playoff run with an upset victory on Sunday (Nov. 2). Kelsey Kramer scored the go-ahead goal with 1:58 left and Sacred Heart, the No. 3 seed in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association large school playoff bracket, knocked off top-seeded Nardin Academy, 2-1, in the playoff finals at Niagara University. The win, which grants the Sharks a trip to the State Catholic Championships on Sunday, Nov. 9 at Owl Hollows Park in Staten Island, New York, came a week after the team beat No. 2 Nichols in the semifinals. “I’m extremely proud

Cara Manzella, who has filled in for injured starter Alexandra Dwyer this season, backstopped Sacred Heart to an MMAA championship Nov. 2. of them,” said Drozen, whose team also won the MMAA crown in 2012. “We have talked about the fact that there were no expectations on us coming into playoffs being

the third seed. We could go in, we could play, we could be capable. And they played to their potential today. “The girls really wanted to make a name for them-

selves this year. They wanted to be recognized in Western New York and they’ve fought for this.”

Composure is the word of the year for the Clarence girls volleyball team. Wednesday night’s (Nov. 4) highly competitive game was no different as the Red Devils beat the Frontier Falcons 3-1 to win the Class AA Girls Volleyball Championship. “We have the word composure,” Clarence coach Michael Meyer explained after the match. “And I think they maintained their composure, which was great. I was really proud of how composed they stayed.” In the first set, Clarence and Frontier traded leads back and forth all the way to the end before Clarence won the game 25-23. In the second set, Clarence led 2216 near the end, but Frontier made a comeback and scored six unanswered points at the end to take the game 25-13. But like Meyer said, the Red Devils never lost their composure. They won two more close sets 25-20 and 25-21 to take the match. “Frontier played unbeliev-

able tonight, and we had to weather the storm,” Meyer said. “We never got flustered. We never gave up, and we just kept coming back, and I’m very proud of them for that.” Frontier coach Debby Schruefer also mentioned the competitiveness of the match while acknowledging that both teams played great. “I think it was an incredible match,” she said. “Two very competitive teams. Clarence did an outstanding job of running their offense, getting us out of system. Just a lot of solid attack, counter attack.” Both coaches wanted it known that it was a total team effort on both sides to make the match as competitive as it was. “The great thing about volleyball is it really is a team sport,” Meyer said. “You really need all six, all seven, all ten playing.” After mentioning Taylor Kaznowski and McKyla Brooks as key players in Frontier’s effort, Schruefer wanted to talk about the rest of the team and how they’ve played this season after losing seven starters to graduation after last season.

Cerza bases success on team wins, not individual stats

Sydney Cerza (13) celebrates one of her two goals against Williamsville North in Clarence’s championship victory in the Class AA finals last week.

By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER

Sydney Cerza knew coming into the season that she would play a leadership role on this year’s team and lead the Clarence Red Devils girls soccer team’s offense. She followed last year’s 29-goal season with 28 goals and eight assists for 64 points in the regular season in 2014. Despite her personal suc-

cess, Cerza is focused on the team’s success over anything. She talks about team goals, expectations, and accomplishments before she’ll talk about her own. And this year’s goal for the team is to win states. Last year’s team lost in the Far West Regionals to Webster Thomas High School. Clarence will again face Webster Thomas in this year’s regionals on Saturday, November 8. This year, Cerza and her teammates want to show themselves and everyone else that they can do more. “Coming into the season, I think we all really wanted to win states because last year

was a devastating loss for us because we lost in Far West Regionals,” Cerza said. “So I think we really want to get past this team just to prove them wrong that we can be a Buffalo team that can beat a Rochester team.” And Cerza’s personal goals revolved around leading the team as well as she could. “I wanted to score a lot of goals, and I really wanted to lead the team and just come through and get a lot of wins,” Cerza said. Cerza led her team to 19 wins for an undefeated 2014 season, a season Cerza is very happy with. “I think that we did really

well,” she said. “I think that as a team, we’ve worked really well together. And I think we’re just really connecting, and I think this is our year. We don’t have a weak link on our team. Everyone on our team contributes.” She credits the Red Devils’ success to their chemistry this year and how well they work together. “I think our team has really bonded well this year, and we have really good team chemistry,” Cerza said. “And I think our defense is working really well to get the ball to our midfielders, who are working really well to get the ball to our forwards, and I think we’re just finishing a lot.” She has done her best to help that team chemistry and believes that is what she brings to the team as a leader. “I think I bring leadership, and I try to unite the team together,” Cerza said. “And I think that me being a forward up top, I think that I work really well with our center mids, and I think that our center mids have done a really good job getting me the ball.” Cerza believes that she herself was so successful due to finishing well and taking advantage of every opportunity. “I’ve just really focused on my finishing this year, and I just make sure that every chance I get that I take

advantage of it.” Cerza and her team trained hard this week while looking forward to Saturday’s game. Cerza is confident that if they train hard and play well, they can pull out a win on Saturday. “I think that we all know that if we work hard and we

train really hard this week, that we can do it, and we just need to all be on. And we just need to take advantage of every opportunity we get, and we just need to score some goals.” Scoring goals is something that Cerza has never found difficult.

Cerza had 28 goals in the regular season this year.

Clarence to take on Meyer lauds Webster Thomas in Far West Regionals unheralded players “Champs” from page B1 “That corner kick that they scored off of was huge for them, and Clarence made a real nice play on that,” Kircher said. “We were just hoping to get a couple of good looks against them, but even though we played well, we didn’t get a whole lot of scoring chances, and when we did get them, we couldn’t capitalize off of them. It’s disappointing.” Although the 2014 season didn’t end the way the Spartans wanted, Kircher believed that the future for his team looked bright. “To get to the sectional final, after we got hit pretty hard because of our graduating class from last year, it’s a pretty good accomplishment,” Kircher said. “We definitely matured a lot over the course of the season, and just kept getting better and better. I think, if we can carry over the same mindset and continue to improve next year, there’s no telling what we can do.”

Hannah Spitzer and the Clarence girls soccer team will play Webster Thomas in the Far West Regionals Nov. 8 at Webster Schroeder in Rochester.

“We talk a lot about it’s all about team,” Schruefer said. “You can’t do it with just one person or two. You need everyone, and these kids have done that. We were the defending 2013 champs, and we graduated seven starters. So these kids, they stepped it up big time this season. They have no reason to hang their heads.” Meyer also gave credit to his entire team’s effort, even stopping one of his players as she walked by to reassure her how important her role had been. “Those people don’t always get their names in the paper, but [players] like Lauren Barnes and Maddie Christopher and Karley King in the back row all came up huge for us,” Meyer said. He mentioned Meghan Neelon (17 kills) and Gabbi

Pacatte (18 kills) as key players but still emphasized the importance of the team. “They don’t get set unless Lauren passes the ball and Maddie sets the ball and Graycie [Enderby] is running her backsides and we got our middles going.” The Red Devils did all the right things to earn the win and be named Class AA champions. “It’s not a surprise,” Meyer said when asked what worked for Clarence tonight. “We set the outside a lot. We set a lot of fours and fives. We’re a pin heading team, and when we needed big kills our big players came up. We also played great team defense. I thought we passed great.” And, of course, Clarence stayed composed throughout the match.

Ice Griffs, Harborcenter full of positives but also need tweaks By Mike Haim COLUMNIST

It’s often heard in today’s Silicon Valley startup culture that failure is good and inevitably helps individuals and companies succeed in larger and more significant ways. While the Canisius College hockey team and the management of their new home facility might not fully embrace that philosophy, some elements of this past weekend will hopefully be potentially helpful to both parties in the long run. As the Ice Griffs went winless against a tough Ohio State team in their first two games at the sparkling Harborcenter complex in

downtown Buffalo, the facility still needs to address some weaknesses amidst an overwhelming number of strong points. The Canisius games took place alongside 16-under and 18-under AAA tournaments in the inaugural Harborcenter Cup series, which made for an interesting scene where ticketholders commingled with tournament participants, their families, and perhaps some total strangers just passing through for a look-see. The feature rink, the Golden Griffins’ new nest, includes nine rows of basic yet attractive wooden bench seating, great sightlines and bright lighting. Walkways ring the perimeter of the

seating area and provide a neat standing-room alternative. Sellout crowds of 2,000 each night took part in festivities and checked out the complex during its grand opening weekend. They also had a chance to celebrate early, as the Griffs scored twice in the opening game’s first 1:49 on Friday night. However, Ohio State clawed their way back and eventually the clubs settled for a 3-3 tie. Saturday night, the Buckeyes stymied Canisius and scored a 4-1 win. Despite the loss, the Griffs still have a winning record for the season (4-3-1) as they travel this weekend to Sacred Heart. The games against Ohio State were a good test for Canisius, which

had never won against a Big 10 team (the Griffs are now 0-6-1 all-time against teams from that conference). Canisius, selected by its conference coaches to finish sixth among 11 teams in Atlantic Hockey, expects to see Harborcenter provide a true home-ice advantage. The team has 14 more home games at the facility this season, with a pair coming up next weekend against RIT. “To establish home-ice advantage, with its traditions, does take a little bit,” admitted Canisius coach Dave Smith. “So far, the environment and the electricity in the air have been awesome. We look to have a true opportunity to establish something special.” The Griffs got acclimated

to the new digs with several practices at Harborcenter prior to Friday’s inaugural game. The same might not have been true for the facility staff that likely had no chance to perform a “dry run” before the event-filled opening weekend. Long lines for concessions are to be expected early on, but parking could become a source of trouble if participants, with their heavy equipment bags, have difficulty getting close to their rink whether or not there’s an event at the First Niagara Center. In addition, I’m not impressed that each rink only has a scoreboard at one end. The place is going to be hosting IIHL (i.e., world) tournaments; it would be

nice for one team to know how much time remains in penalties without needing to turn around. Dual scoreboards might be a luxury in community rinks, but Harborcenter is supposed the transcend that. Make no mistake, any new building is going to have its share of “growing pains,” or unanticipated issues that nobody thought of during the planning process. Perhaps Canisius’ sophomore forward Shane Conacher (brother of former Griff great and current NHL-er Cory) says it best, though he was specifically describing his team: “We have stuff to work on, but we’re going to get better. We’re excited about where we’re going.”

Clarence football takes Class AA Chuck Funke Memorial Bowl consolation tournament By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER

It was a disappointing season for the Clarence football team, but it was able to end it on a high note. The Red Devils faced the Lancaster Redskins Thursday (Oct. 30) night in the Class AA Chuck Funke Memorial bowl game, and Clarence won, 36-28. The game was close all night, with Clarence and Lancaster trading touchdowns for much of it. Lancaster scored on the opening drive of the contest, a long opening drive that finally ended in Justin Hersey’s touchdown rush. Clarence’s Andrew Lorenz blocked the PAT, however, and Lancaster had a 6-0 lead. Clarence went ahead 7-6 lead on its next drive when

Angelo Marzullo scored on the ground. Another touchdown by the Redskins and a successful two-point conversion near the end of the first quarter gave them a 14-7 lead, but Clarence answered back shortly into the second quarter, and the Red Devils’ own two-point conversion helped them regain the lead. A fumble by Lancaster that was recovered by Ryan Schlager led to another Clarence touchdown, Marzullo’s second of the night, but the Redskins answered back to tie the game at 21 as the first half came to an end. Clarence took a 29-28 lead on a Stephen Marzano’s touchdown with 7:37 remaining in the game and was able to force a three-and-out on Lancaster’s next drive. With 5:54 remaining, Clarence could have just tried to kill time and run down the clock, but it did more than that. Marzano scored his second touchdown of the game to give Clarence some breathing room with a 36-28 lead.

Stephen Marzano had a pair of rushing touchdowns in Clarence’s win against Lancaster.

Clarence coach Mark Layer said it was huge for his team to score that last touchdown. “When we had the lead and needed to use the clock up, we were able to run the clock down, drive, and not only kill time but we were able to score, and that was just huge for us,” Layer said. On the Redskins’ final drive of the game, they tried to go for it on fourth-and-10 at Clarence’s 37-yard line, but a strong defensive effort from Clarence forced a turnover. “Our defense came up big at the end and forced the turnover so we were able to kneel it out,” Layer said. More than anything, Layer was impressed by the Red Devils’ ability to keep fighting and answering back after Lancaster made some big plays. “I thought the kids really kept fighting, even when we got beat with some big plays,” Layer said. “[Lancaster] had a couple receivers who were just

challenging to defend with their size and strength. But it seemed like every time they made a play, our kids answered and that’s just huge for our kids.” Marzullo was once again Clarence’s biggest offensive weapon Thursday night. He had 22 carries for a total of 131 yards to go along with his two touchdowns. On defense, Ryan Schlager came up huge for Clarence with two fumble recoveries and a quarterback sack. As always, the effort and competitiveness was there for Clarence, and Layer made sure to mention it. “I thought our ability to answer each time they made a big play said a lot about our kids’ effort,” Layer said. Clarence is done playing football for 2014. The Red Devils have the 2015 season to look forward to with the return of current juniors Marzullo and Marzano. For the seniors, a 36-28 hardfought win was a good way to end their high school football career.

Sacred Heart rallies around Sharks fall to Lancers in semis backup keeper Manzella “Upset” from page B1 The Sharks (10-10) had to fight. Nardin, the defending MMAA champion, entered the tilt having won seven straight and 11 of its last 12. Additionally, the Gators had defeated Sacred Heart 5-0 and 2-1 in the teams’ two regular season meetings this year. But much like they’ve done since a midseason injury knocked starting goalkeeper Alexandra Dwyer out for the year, the Sharks rallied around backup goalie Cara Manzella. The junior keeper had eight saves in the first half alone and thwarted several prime scoring chances generated by a powerful Nardin attack. “She’s been in covering for [Dwyer] after she had knee surgery and she’s emerged as a leader,” Drozen said. “The girls love playing in front of her. They respect her and she takes charge.” Neither team broke through until the second half when Sacred Heart senior Katelyn Matre finished off a nice cross from junior Madison Koons in the 64th minute to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead. With just over 15 minutes left, Drozen thought her de-

fense was strong enough to preserve the advantage. The Gators had other plans. Playing without All-Western New York standout Tricia Mangan, the Gators drew even with 3:37 left when sophomore Sydney Scello headed in a set piece off a free kick. Emma Gervase earned an assist on the play. “I thought we would be able to contain [Nardin] and win that game there,” Drozen said. “And we tried. But we gave up a tough ball near the end and they capitalized. Good teams capitalize.” Good teams respond, too. And that’s what the Sharks did. With 1:58 to play, Kramer crashed the net and bodied in Taylor DiMarco’s free kick, which bounced off the crossbar. “At that point, in my head, it was game over,” said Drozen, who commended the play of DiMarco and Abbie Maving throughout the tilt. “The girls were not going to give up a goal knowing our defense, so I knew we’d be able to win that game.” For Nardin, it was, in coach Frank Cotroneo’s eyes, a disappointing end to

yet another successful season. Though the Gators were unable to come away with a second consecutive Monsignor Martin playoff championship, they finished 14-3-1 and won the regular season league title. “The girls played well this year,” Cotroneo said. “They played real well. We beat Aquinas and we tied Mercy (Rochester).” Like Sacred Heart, the team endured its share of adversity when starting keeper Clare Galbo went down with a season-ending knee injury early in the season. And they faced a little more after learning that Mangan, an alpine skier, was injured on a recent ski trip and wouldn’t be available for the championship game. “It was a huge difference not having her,” Cotroneo said, before adding that fellow midfielder Eileen Rath had a strong day in Mangan’s absence and a very strong season overall. “She wins all those 50s, she scores, so my center forward was gone. So we had to try and figure it out, who would do what in a short period of time.”

St. Mary’s continued its undefeated season with a win over Sacred Heart in the Monsignor Martin semifinals on Monday, Nov. 3. The Lancers swept the Sharks 25-11, 25-15, 25-12 to win the semifinals and advance to the finals on Wednesday, November 5. St. Mary’s coach Don Pieczynski didn’t put too much weight on past success against Sacred Heart when preparing for Monday’s match-up. “[Our goal] was to survive and advance,” Pieczynski said. “You never know what to expect. Past performance doesn’t mean anything about a future opponent. Teams get better as the year progresses, and the same time they’re getting better, so are we.” The Lancers also lost their best player, Leah Meyer, the previous weekend, so Pieczynski knew that a win wouldn’t be as easy without her. “Our team is adjusting to the loss of our best player, so I think we’re giving a little more effort than the last time

we have as well,” he said. Sacred Heart didn’t make it too easy for St. Mary’s, keeping each set close at the beginning before ultimately losing. In the second set, the score was tied at 11 at one point during the game before St. Mary’s scored eight straight points to get the win. Sacred Heart coach Allison Boehm was proud of the effort her team gave and believes that the Sharks carried some of the momentum over from Saturday’s (November 1) win over Immaculata. “We knew it was going to be a tough competition today,” Boehm said. “I thought the girls used a lot of Saturday’s energy and came out fighting today. That’s the best three sets that we’ve played against them so far this season, and that’s all we really could have asked for.” Sacred Heart started strong and faltered at the end, but Boehm believes that Monday’s game is something her team will learn from and improve on for next year. “Obviously a little letdown as you saw game three unfolding, but that’s just something they’ll get with experience,” she said. Mia Wild, Emma Madison, and Micaela and Kathleen Ryan were a few key players for the Sharks. “Mia [Wild] and Emma [Madison] have passed

Nobody expected them to be there. That was the case for fourthseeded Orchard Park when it headed into the Section VI Class A final against Clarence on Wednesday night (Nov. 5). It was especially true after falling in the sectional title game a year ago, but the Quakers put all of that doubt behind them by defeating the Red Devils, 3-1, to earn the right to represent Section VI in the Far West Regionals. “Here is what happened,”

said Orchard Park head coach Bridget Callahan. “We went to these people last year and lost 1-0. It was a heartbreaker. We don’t have a lot of superstars, but everybody played together and they played with heart today. They were ready to go and win. “We were the underdogs and we have been the underdogs in the playoffs the whole time. We knew that when we played Clarence, that they would be very tough. The last time we played them, we tied, so we knew they were going to be tough. We were ready.” Orchard Park jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first half as Sydney Potenza scored on a pass from Penny Leonard. The key goal would come with 2:36 left in the first half as Jesse Urbank found the back of the net off a pass from Katie

Luchowski to give the Quakers a 2-0 lead at the break. Any goal is important, but when a team can jump on the favorite by two before halftime, it allows them to come out and play with no tentativeness, and that’s exactly what happened as Kelsey Griffin scored early in the second to make it 3-0. “It was huge,” said Callahan. “It was 110 percent the whole time. No let up. We played in three-minute increments. We played our hardest for three minutes and then started again for another three minutes. That’s what we did.” Alexis Krupa would get Clarence on the board with just under 14 minutes to play, but ultimately, it was too little, too late as the Quakers immediately clamped down on defense to preserve the lead and the victory. “It was the three minutes,”

said Callahan. “We didn’t chunk the whole 30-minute half. We had to stop them then. We just took a little bit at a time.” For the second-seeded Red Devils, the story was one of missed opportunities. Neither team dominated time of possession; it was a matter of Orchard Park capitalizing on its chances and Clarence missing on a few golden opportunities which eventually made all the difference in the contest. “I told the kids going into this game that we are pretty equal and it’s going to be whoever plays the better game is going to be the team that won,” said Clarence head coach Beth Brawn. “We made some stupid mistakes, didn’t connect on passes. We didn’t play our best. We didn’t capitalize and we couldn’t find the back of the net. Orchard Park was the

better team today.” Clarence will have to say goodbye to 10 seniors from this squad. However, Brawn said that a loss in the sectional championship game is nothing for her players to hang their heads over. “We had ups and downs all season,” said Brawn. “The fact that we made it to the sectional championship was something to be accomplished. I asked them if they could give me 100 percent, and if they could come off the field tell me that they gave me 100 percent, then technically they did win that game because they left it all on the field.” Clarence finishes the season 10-7-1, while Orchard Park (10-8-1) will advance to play the Section V representative in the Far West Regionals on Monday (Nov. 10) at Webster Schroeder with a start time of 5 p.m.

really great the past two days,” Boehm said. The two middles are outstanding, the two Ryan sisters.” The Sharks’ only senior, Stephanie Martin, was key in uniting the team in its two playoff games. However, Boehm is relieved that Martin is the only player the Sharks are losing after this season and hoping that this year’s momentum and lessons learned carry into next season. “Over the last two days, Steph, our senior, has really been key in getting them all to come together and really make this final push,” Boehm said. “The good thing is we’re losing just Steph so everyone comes back next year, so hopefully we can use this momentum next year.” For Pieczynski and the Lancers, they had one more game Wednesday night to look forward to. “We’ve got one more match to go to win it all,” Pieczynski said. “We’ve got a few things to work on, and I obviously scouted the last match to see what we could do different, and hopefully it’s going to work for us.” Ashley Drzymala, Bailey Dolegowski, and Caitlin Meyer were an integral part of the Lancers’ win. Drzymala had 16 kills, Dolegowski had 27 assists, and Meyer had six kills.

Not only that, they each had their picture taken with wide receiver Sammy Watkins and linebacker Preston Brown and walked away with $100 Wegmans gift cards, apparel, autographs and more. Representatives from the Dairy Council met the students at the school and gave them Fuel Up to Play 60 shirts and Bills hats to wear to the event. A school bus took them to the Wegmans grocery store in Blasdell, where they met with the 14 players who represent the Buffalo Bills Rookie Club. Holmes Elementary School was chosen for the Hometown Huddle with help from Kim Roll, food service director for the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda UFSD, and the Dairy Council. “It was such a cool event. To see these great big Buffalo Bills players and our kids with their grocery bags — these fourth and fifth graders who were learning about nutrition — it was so exciting,” Roll said. “Our kids were so good. I was so proud of them.” In addition to the NFL and the Bills, the Hometown Huddle is supported by American Dairy Association and Dairy Council, and the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County. According to Fuel Up to Play 60, the Hometown Huddle is “a league-wide day of service designed to bring awareness and impact to the issue of youth health and fitness”

and the event “aims to educate local youth on the importance of good nutrition through school meal programs as well as learning to navigate the grocery store.” Fresh fruits and vegetables were a major topic at the Hometown Huddle and are a major focus this year at KenmoreTown of Tonawanda schools. In support of the newly revised wellness policy, which incorporates the 2010 Healthy, HungerFree Kids Act and Smart Snacks in Schools standards, the District has initiated a Fruit and Veggie of the Month program. The purpose of the program is to focus on one fruit and one vegetable each month so students can learn all about the nutritional benefits of, and best way to enjoy, each featured fruit and vegetable. Apples and Brussels sprout were featured in October and strawberries and squash will be featured in November.

THE COLLEGE Frontier grad Mann, UB looking forward to hosting MAC playoffs By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Courtney Mann is a senior leader on the University at Buffalo women’s soccer team, but even she is barely old enough to remember the last time the Bulls hosted the MidAmerican Conference playoffs. The Frontier High School graduate was 7 years old when the Bulls last won the MAC regular season championship in 2000. “I remember my oldest sister (Lindsey) and my dad (Gary) came to the games,” Mann said. The Mann family and many others in the local soccer community will be out at UB Stadium this weekend as the Bulls look to augment the best season in school history by qualifying for the NCAA tournament.

“It’s kind of surreal,” said sophomore defender Rachel Cook, a Williamsville South graduate. “I’ve grown up in Buffalo and gone to UB camps since I was in elementary and middle school and it’s really neat to be here and be part of such a successful season. Mann was excited by the turnout for UB’s quarterfinal victory over Toledo on Sunday. “It was really cool, especially seeing the local clubs, clubs that I’ve coached,” she said. “To be a local kid and there being a high-level soccer tournament in Buffalo is huge for the local community.” UB (14-2-3 overall, 9-0-2 MAC) earned the right to host the playoff games by becoming just the third team in MAC history to go unbeaten in regular season play. “And this conference is tough,” coach Shawn

Burke said. “In our last game, we played Akron at home and went to overtime and they finished 12th. “That speaks to the depth of this league and is a huge testament to the girls and the body of work they’ve done to get these results.” UB will ace Ball State in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Friday. The Bulls won the regular season meeting at home on a penalty kick in overtime. The other semifinal between Western Michigan and Northern Illinois is at 7 p.m. Friday, and the championship game is Sunday. Burke is in his firstyear as head coach after five seasons as an assistant. “Burke’s thing when took over was we have the talent here,” Cook said. “We didn’t need to go get recruits or internationals. We just needed to use what we have.”

Courtney Mann (22), a Frontier graduate, was 7 years old when the Bulls last won the MAC regular season championship. UB has two all-conference caliber attackers in Katie Roberts and Celina Carrero, and one of the

league’s top defenders in Jackie Hall. Freshman goalkeeper Laura Dougall has faced less than five

shots in 14 games, and has posted 14 shutouts. She has a 0.37 goalsagainst average, and a .911 save percentage. “She has had an incredible freshman year,” Mann said. “I don’t think anyone can compare. We had a very good goalkeeper last year, and there was no drop in play.” Last year’s netminder, Ainsley Wheldon, ranks in the top four all-time in all of UB’s major goalkeeping categories. “The greatest thing is these girls have really come together,” Burke said. “There is a reason the results are coming in our favor. “These girls have earned all the accolades they are going to get. It’s been an amazing group. It’s a fun group to be around and when you get a group playing for something bigger than themselves, it’s really special.”

Postseason remains UB’s goal even during winless streak By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

The University at Buffalo football team hasn’t won a game in over a month and has gone through a coaching change during that span. Yet, the Bulls still have their eyes on the postseason. Even after losing three straight Mid-American Conference games, UB (3-5, 1-4) could still conceivably win its final four games and be-

come eligible for one of the MAC’s five bowl bids. UB’s next four opponents have a combined record of 11-23. “Nobody’s giving up,” wide receiver Ron Willoughby said. “We have four winnable games, and that brings us to seven wins, which is bowl eligible.” Because two of their three wins have come against lower-division opponents, the Bulls must win out to become bowl eligible.

“Even if there were no bowl possibilities, we sign on here to give the best we possibly can until the very end,” interim coach Alex Wood said. “We would never quit. There is a flaw in your character when you think in those terms.” UB even has an outside chance of winning the MAC East division, though it trails leader Bowling Green by two games and the Falcons hold the head-to-head tie-

breaker. First, the Bulls must win at Ohio (4-5, 2-3), where they are 1-7 all-time, in a midweek “Maction” game (8 p.m. Wednesday, ESPNU, 1520 AM). UB then hosts midweek games against Akron (4-4, 2-2) and Kent State (1-7, 0-4) before finishing up Nov. 28 at UMass (2-7, 2-3). All of the remaining games will be televised on ESPNU or ESPN2. “Everyone wants to play

on ESPN in the bright lights and the big moments,” Willoughby said. “That’s when we find out who the best players and the best teams are.” ••• Buffalo State’s postseason hopes took a major hit last weekend when the Bengals lost 35-25 at St. John Fisher. The Bengals (5-3, 3-3) have lost two in a row and now trail nationally-ranked St. John Fisher by two games in the Empire 8 Conference

standings with just one conference game left to play. Ryan Carney (Olean) caught four passes for 133 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Mike Doherty (Kenmore East) caught four passes for 87 yards. John Alessandra (Kenmore East) made a career-high 17 tackles, and Marquis Artis (Amherst) had 11 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Buffalo State hosts Hartwick at noon Saturday in its home finale.

A cappella country music quintet Home Free visited Buffalo for the first time in March. They were touring with three other groups as part of “The Sing Off Live Tour!” after appearing on season four of NBC’s “The Sing Off,” a competition series. Home Free, the show’s champion, was surprised to see how much appreciation of country and a cappella music there was in Western New York, causing them to want to return to the city during their “Crazy Life” national headlining tour. “This show will be very different from our last one,” said Chris Rupp, Home Free member and creator. The show will include songs from their YouTube channel and individual songs from each person in the group, along with lighting, staging and choreography. “It’s a family-friendly show

that appeals to every demographic. And it’s not just country music, there will be some pop and oldies, too.” Their 34-city tour kicked off Nov. 5 in Durham, N.C. In each city, the band arrives around 9 a.m. and the crew begins their loading process in the theater around noon. Rupp said he enjoys going to the gym, answering emails and going on social media before taking the stage around 4:30 p.m. for sound check, which is followed by a 20 to 30 minute rehearsal. In each city, the band allows VIP ticket holders to come into the theater around 5:30 p.m. “We normally have a Q&A session, sing a song we’re not doing in the show, do a private signing, give out special goodies and take pictures,” Rupp said. The band – consisting of

Rupp, his brother Adam and their friends Austin Brown, Rob Lundquist and Tim Foust – will then head backstage to enjoy dinner and clean up before starting their show at 7:30. When the 90-minute show, which includes an intermission, comes to an end, fans have the chance to meet Home Free and get autographs. This is also when the crew begins the tear down process, packing up all their equipment. Around 2 a.m. the tour bus leaves and they’re on their way to the next city to repeat the process. “Sleeping on a moving bus isn’t the easiest thing in the world,” Rupp said. He also finds it hard to eat well while on the road. “So many fans like to give us cookies and cakes.” Being on tour makes it hard for Rupp to maintain relationships with his
