Clarence soccer set for state championships By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER
For the first time ever, the Clarence girls soccer team has advanced to the NYSPHSAA championships. Clarence will face defending state champion Massapequa from Long Island in the semifinals on Saturday (Nov. 15). The Red Devils earned their spot in the state final four with a win over Webster Thomas on Nov. 8. It’s been a postseason of firsts for Clarence, with Sunday’s win also making history. “It was the first time in history that the Class AA team from Section VI ever defeated their Section V counterpart,” Clarence coach Tom Furminger explained. It was a complete team effort by Clarence that won it the game against Webster Thomas, 3-1. Sydney Cerza scored two goals, Amanda Burns had a goal and an assist, and Anna Davies had two assists. All of the goals were scored in the first half, which Furminger said “was one of the most complete first halves we played all year.” The second half was a little different, but Clarence held on, played well, and picked up the win. “Thomas came out with some intensity, and the team did well to absorb the pressure and create some chances of our own,” Furminger said.

Sharks’ Cinderella run ends on Staten Island in state semifinals
Sacred Heart spikers rally to 7-9 record despite youth
By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER
By Melissa Brawdy Sacred Heart soccer’s season came to an end with a loss to Christ the King in the state semifinals on Staten Island on Sunday (Nov. 9). At the beginning of the season, coach Amy Drozen had hoped that her team would make it back to the league finals “and potentially the state championship.” Although the Sharks would have liked to go even further, the success they had this season is something to be proud of and may have surprised some.

The Sacred Heart volleyball team was a young group this season. Coach Allison Boehm said at the beginning of the season that the girls were “young enough to not know any better,” and they turned some heads by finishing with a 7-9 record and advancing all the way to the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association semifinals, where they lost to St. Mary’s. The 7-9 record was not an improvement over last year’s 8-8 record, but af-
ter losing four of its key players to graduation last year, Sacred Heart had a relatively new team this year and a lot to learn. Boehm was happy with the improvement she saw over the season. “Definitely happy with the way the season ended,” she said. “I felt that the girls were finally playing up to their potential.” One of the highlights of the year was the quarterfinal game. After losing to Immaculata just three days prior, Sacred Heart had a chance at redemption on Saturday, Nov. 1. And the Sharks took advantage of that chance, winning the game 3-2 to advance to the semifinals.

Clarence native Grazen heads into senior year at Canisius By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER
Clarence native Matthew Grazen is in his senior year at Canisius College and a key member of the Canisius Golden Griffins hockey team. Work ethic has been the key for Grazen to get where he is, and he’s hoping to finish his college hockey career on a high note. “I try and give it my all every time I step on the ice, and I try and compete as hard as I can at all times,” Grazen said. He believes that he brings that work ethic to the team this year, along with speed
and intensity. He tries to use those aspects of his game to set an example for his teammates. “I feel I bring speed, intensity, and a work ethic to the team,” Grazen said. “I try and play hard and fast and be an example of that for others to follow.” Grazen’s goal this season is to have the best year he’s had so far at Canisius. He tries to bring that intensity he mentioned to each game and do what he can to shift the momentum of the game in his team’s favor. That’s always been his goal, but Grazen hopes to do so even more in his final season with Canisius. “I was just trying to go

in and play the best hockey I have so far in college,” Grazen said. “That means to have my most productive scoring year as well as bring intensity and an edge to each game. My main goal and expectation is to change each game and shift the game’s momentum for my team. This is the same mindset I have had each year going into the season, but i may have more of an emphasis on this now because I am a senior.” Grazen has three goals in 10 games this year. His season high at Canisius is eight goals, which happened two years ago in Grazen’s sophomore year. He’s happy but modest about the season he’s having so far. “I feel I have been doing everything I can to help my team win games and hopefully that means I have been playing well,” Grazen said. Grazen is happy to be leading a team like Canisius, where he said the coaches and players have what feels like a family atmosphere. He is also happy with the success and history of the Canisius hockey program. “I really like the family atmosphere we have at Canisius,” Grazen said. “We are a tight knit group of players along with the coaches. The atmosphere is very positive and makes you feel comfortable. I like that the program is growing so much and is now a winning program with tradition and history.” A highlight this season for the Griffins was the opening of the HarborCenter in downtown Buffalo. A brand new

The HarborCenter opened its main rink on October 31, and Canisius hosted Ohio State for the first hockey game there. The game ended in a 3-3 tie. “The HarborCenter is unbelievable to play at and is a first class facility,” Grazen said. “The highlight of the season so far is for sure the opening night at the HarborCenter. While we would have liked
to win that game, not tie, the atmosphere and energy at the game was incredible and it was overall a very special night for Canisius College Hockey.” After losing to Robert Morris University in last year ’s Atlantic Hockey Championship, Grazen and his Griffins teammates are hoping to advance even further this year. “My goal for the season is to win another championship and head back to the NCAA tournament,” Grazen said. “That is our
team’s focus and the goal we are all working for. I am excited for the postseason and the atmosphere that that brings. The excitement of playoff hockey is great.” In the meantime, Grazen will enjoy every day and every minute of his last season with Canisius. “I just look forward to enjoying the moments that happen everyday at the rink and every weekend,” Grazen said. “The whole process is a great thing to be a part of.”
‘Great team effort’ propels Clarence past Webster Thomas “Clarence” from page B1 The entire team stepped up when it needed to, from goalkeeper Molly Barden to defenders Hannah Spitzer and Alex Valenti to center back Talia Williams. Lauren Perry came in to replace Davies, who went down with a knee injury, and did exactly what she needed to do to fill the void left by Davies. “Goalkeeper Molly Barden played great, controlling getting the serves in the air,” Furminger said. “Defenders Hannah Spitzer and Alex Valenti marked their two dangerous forwards and kept them off the score sheet. Center back Talia Williams was composed and supported all the efforts that Thomas tried getting through. Lauren Perry came on when Davies went down with a knee injury and played exceptional on their talented central midfielder. It was a great team effort.” The girls know that there’s still much to be done. They’re looking ahead to Saturday’s game and working hard to be prepared. They know that they’ll have to be at their best to give themselves the best chance against Massapequa.
“Our expectation is to play to the best of our ability,” Furminger said. “We will try and be organized and intense in our defending, and when we attack we will try to do it in numbers. We have seen Massapequa’s county final on the internet and they are very technical and skilled. We will need to be disciplined and play our best to compete with them.” Regardless of what happens on Saturday, Furminger and his team are very happy with how far they’ve come this season. The girls’work ethic and determination have been a constant throughout the season, and Furminger is proud of his team. “Our season over all has been excellent,” Furminger said. “They continue to work hard in practice and have fun playing. From the first practice in August through winning the booster tournament, the ECIC 1 title, the Section VI title, and the Far West Regional title, the kids have been focused and determined. They are an amazing group of student athletes, and I could not be prouder of them.”

St. Mary’s spikers win Catholic state title By William Wilczewski SPORTS REPORTER
There were plenty of teams in the state prep volleyball scene that were at least hoping when nationally-recognized talent Leah Meyer injured her ankle in the last game of the 2014 regular season, their team would stand a chance in the state finals on Sunday, Nov. 9.
Thanks to St. Mary’s senior hitter Ashley Drzymala—and the rest of her Lady Lancers— all those hopes amounted to a hill of beans when that Catholic High School AA Championship state tourney unfolded in Lancaster on Sunday. That’s because when it was all said and done, St. Mary’s not only ended the season with the state title, but also a perfect 47-0-1 record, includ-
ing four tournament wins and an equally perfect 19-0 record in Monsignor Martin Athletic Association league play. The final victory of 2014 came in the form of a 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-23) whitewashing of St. Anthony’s (Melville) Lady Friars, after the Lady Lancers went 3-0 in pool play and also beat Hartsdale’s Maria Regina 25-8, 25-10 in the semifinals.
Drzymala finished the title game with 24 kills and 19 of digs. She also tallied 76 kills on the night to go with 41 digs. Bailey Dolegowski served up 36 assists and 14 digs in the title match . Freshman Summer Slade also had 20 kills on the perfect evening, while Caitlyn Meyer—Leah’s sophomore sister—added 23 kills and junior Jessica Kranz provided 31 digs.
Clarence Stallions best Regals On Nov. 8, the Mite Major Clarence Stallions defeated the Regals AA, 5-1. The Stallions’ defense of Maximus Henning, Drew Idzik, Owen McIntyre and Tucker Schoen was central to the victory, allowing very few shots on net. Offensively, Luke Marchant had two goals, including
one on which he dove and deftly swatted the puck between the goaltender’s legs. Miles Santa Maria had two goals and an assist. Nic Zivis also scored after taking a pass from Liam Graham, who fed one through the Regals’ defense to set up a goal by linemate Nic Zivis. Idzik had an assist as well.

Clarence struggled to close out games, remained competitive all the way to Class AA Funke Bowl win By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER
A hardworking and competitive football team couldn’t quite finish off wins when it needed to. That was the story of this year’s Clarence Red Devils, as they finished with a 2-6 record before winning the Chuck Funke Class AA Championship Consolation Bowl over Lancaster by a score of 36-28. Coach Mark Layer was pleased with his team’s competitiveness and level of play and wishes that they could have finished games better. “I think that this year’s team competed at a high level each and every week against some of the top teams in Western New York,” Layer said. “There were a few times that we were leading at halftime but were unable to finish off. That was one area that would have liked to turn out differently. If we could have held on in those games, we would have had a
Clarence finished the season 2-6 and won the Chuck Funke Memorial Bowl. good chance to qualify for the playoffs.” Still, there were many aspects of Clarence’s game that worked well this season. Defense wasn’t always a strong point, but offense usually was. “Offensively we were able to move the ball and consume the clock on many occasions,” Layer said. “Defensively we
gave up the big play too often. This allowed teams to score quickly. One of the things that surprised me was our ability to successfully throw the ball out of multiple sets. We worked hard on this through the offseason, and it really paid off in our ability to make big plays and throw the ball effectively in many games.”
Manzella makes 11 saves “Sharks” from page B1 Sacred Heart finished the season with a 5-3 record in league play despite losing Ally Dwyer, one of its captains and key players to injury during the season. The Sharks beat Nichols 4-3 in a shootout in the league semifinals on Oct. 25 and then defeated Nardin 2-1 on Nov. 2 to advance to the state championships. They were considered the underdogs going in but put up a good fight in the 3-1 loss. Christ the King, a team from the Brooklyn/ Queens Diocese, struck first to take a 1-0 lead just over 10 minutes into the game on a deflection in front of the net. Sacred Heart evened the score quickly, waiting just two minutes to tie the game at 1 on a Katelyn Matre goal. “Matre made a run down the sideline and crossed the ball into the box,” Drozen explained. “The keeper mishandled
it, and Madison Koons put the rebound in.” That was it for the Sharks, though, as Christ the King scored two goals that dropped over goalkeeper Cara Manzella’s head after catching her off her goal line. “We created a handful of scoring opportunities in the second half but could not bring the game closer,” Drozen said. In the 3-1 loss, there were several players for Sacred Heart who kept the game from getting out of hand. Taylor DiMarco, Kelsey Kramer, Abbie Maving and Alea Manzella were key players for the Sharks. “[Alea Manzella] shut down their second leading goal scorer,” Drozen said. Cara Manzella made 11 saves for Sacred Heart. The girls will put the 2014 season behind them as they look ahead to next year. Dwyer, along with co-captain Katelyn Matre, will graduate in the
spring. The Sharks will lose three other seniors to graduation as well in Isabelle Kozik, Abbie Maving and Rachel McMahan. The team’s other captain, Taylor DiMarco, who was expected to lead the offense this season, is only a sophomore this year, so her leadership and experience will be important to the team going forward. Drozen expected the entire team to gain more experience this year, and they did that with a schedule that not only included eight league games but also nine non-league games. The girls played a lot of soccer, gaining valuable experience and building team chemistry throughout the season. The Sharks will look to build on this year’s success, as the majority of the team will have the experience of playing in a state championship tournament to carry with them into next season.
At the beginning of the season, Layer said that one of this year’s goals was to mix up the offense more. One of the biggest issues for Clarence in 2013 was the lack of variety in its offense, which allowed other teams to quickly figure out the Red Devils’ game plan and stop them effectively. In 2014, Clarence tried to pass
the ball more and also add more variety into its running game. Although there is room for improvement, Layer was pleased with the more balanced offense. “We were able to run and pass the ball successfully in our tight running set and were able to pass the ball well in some of our spread sets,” Layer said. “We were not as effective running the ball out of our spread sets and that is something we will certainly have to get better at. All in all I thought we had good balance in our offense.” At the beginning of the season, seniors Britton Mann and Bill Lorenz were expected to step up and be key players for Clarence. They did just that, as did quarterback Scott Pinto, running back Angelo Marzullo, and defensive lineman Ryan Schlager. Marzullo, a junior this year, wasn’t even a regular starter at the beginning of the season, but he quickly earned a spot as Clarence’s biggest offensive weapon. “Angelo Marzullo made many big plays on offense and was our biggest weapon,” Layer said. “Britton Mann was a two-way starter who was one
of our leading receivers on offense and also one of our best defensive players. Bill Lorenz was a three-year starter on the offensive and defensive line and was one of our best team leaders and captains. Ryan Schlager was a dominating player for us on the defensive line.” The Red Devils now look ahead to next year, when they’ll have to adjust to losing Mann, Lorenz, Schlager, and Pinto. Layer is excited to see how next year’s team fits together and who steps up into the roles left behind by graduating seniors. He’s also excited for the offensive depth next year’s team will have, as players compete for open positions. “I am looking forward to working with a new group of kids and combining our returning juniors and sophomores with this year’s JV players,” Layer said. “It will be interesting to see where the younger players fit into the spots our current senior class are leaving. We seem to have a deeper group of running backs and receivers but will have to find out who can step in on the offensive line positions that will be open for competition.”
Team expects to be largely the same in ‘15 “Spikers” from page B1 One of Sacred Heart’s key players for the season, junior captain Kathleen Ryan, was crucial to the quarterfinal win. The middle hitter had 10 kills, nine blocks, and three aces in the game, all while injured. “She became the vocal and motivational leader we need on the team,” Boehm said. “Her leadership will take us far next year.” The team’s only senior, captain Stephanie Martin, was another key player for the Sharks this season. “She really stepped up toward the end of the season,” Boehm said. “You could tell the rest of the team felt more at ease with her on the court. We’ll miss her presence both on and off the court next year.” One of the biggest improvements Sacred Heart made over this season was communication. At the beginning of the season,
Boehm was sometimes frustrated with the lack of communication on the court. As the season went on, it was something that the girls worked hard to improve on, and they were successful. When there were lapses in communication, the game wasn’t as smooth and the girls would quickly become frustrated with each other. But when communication was strong on the court, the evidence on the court was undeniable. Sacred Heart will lose Martin and return most of the same team next season. Expectations are high. “Next year, with only losing two seniors we return basically the same team,” Boehm said. “The girls know that the sky is the limit, so the expectations will be set high.” Boehm had said at the beginning of the year that
she expected Sacred Heart to “be a completely different team by the end of the season as we are now.” The experiences of the season and visible improvements made that happen. This year’s experiences helped the girls to gel more as a team, learn each of their roles, and know how to communicate with each other. With that in mind and the kinks worked out, Boehm expects next year’s team to want to win even more. This year was about learning and gaining experience and chemistry; next year is about winning. “I think the biggest difference we will see next year is a desire to win,” Boehm said. “We have a core group of girls that have been working hard over the last few years together, and now they want to compete and win.”
Clutch Kramers: SHA junior scores big goal years after sister did By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER
It’s funny how life can draw parallels in the lives of siblings. Take Sacred Heart junior Kelsey Kramer and her older sister Courtney Kramer for example. On Nov. 2 Kelsey scored a key goal that helped the Sharks upset top-seed Nardin for the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association large school playoff championship. The win came almost four years to the day when Courtney scored a hat trick to help Holy Angels defeat St. Mary’s of Lancaster for the MMAA small school playoff title. “It was a really good feel-
ing,” said Kelsey Kramer, who also helped Sacred Heart win the playoff title her freshman season as well. “I was really excited.” An eighth grader at the time she witnessed her sister’s heroics on the soccer field, Kelsey said seeing Courtney win a championship on varsity inspired her to work hard to attain the same goal. “She was really good on Holy Angels,” said Kelsey. “I looked up to her and I went to all of her games and I wanted to be like her.” Sadly, the Kramers have also known the sting of losing time on the field because of a knee injury. Courtney,a sophomore at the time of Holy Angels’ championship win, sustained a devastating knee injury in that championship game that ended her scholastic playing days. “It was really bad. We didn’t know what was
Kelsey Kramer, left, scored the game-winning goal in the MMAA small school finals. wrong with her,” said Kelsey Kramer. “When we got the results and it was her ACL and her MCL. It was really sad.” Kelsey lost a year of her scholastic career when she suffered a knee injury the June prior to her sophomore
season. “I dislocated my knee a few times,” said Kramer. “So I had to get reconstruction surgery.” Kelsey said that having Courtney by her side during her recovery got her through the ups, downs and fears of
the unknown. “She told me that I could do it because hers was worse than mine and she was out even longer and she had two surgeries,” said Kramer. “I just looked up to her and I saw that she came back and she wasn’t even supposed to be able to play again and she played (travel) for Blackwatch.” Courtney also gave Kelsey the occasional kick in the pants when needed, telling her baby sister that her road to recovery was harder. ‘If I can do it, so can you.’ “Yeah she always said that,” Kelsey said with a laugh. “It was good to have her to look up to because I knew I’d be able to come back and play soccer.” Back in action this season, Kelsey Kramer has once again established herself as a force on the soccer field and a key reason why the Sharks made it to the
state tournament for the second time in three seasons. “She’s hungry. I guess that’s the best way to put it,” said Sharks head coach Amy Drozen. “She wants to be the winner. She wants to be the best and the girls feed off of that.” Having that unique ability to lead through her words as well as her actions, Kramer has proven her value time and time again. “The girls respect her, which is great, because she backs up anything she says on the field,” Drozen added. “When she’s on her game and she’s playing well the entire team elevates to that next level.” More than anything, Kelsey Kramer is just thankful to be healthy enough to once again play the game she loves. “It was amazing,” Kramer said with a smile. “I missed it so much.”

Dual-threat Hickson leads St. Francis to playoff win over St. Mary’s, matchup against Canisius By William Wilczewski SPORTS REPORTER
The No. 5-seeded St. Mary’s Lancers football team came into Nov. 6’s Monsignor Martin Association quarterfinals playoff game after escaping with a narrow 30-28 regular season victory on Nov. 1 over No. 6 Cardinal O’Hara. Having lost to No. 4 St. Francis 46-20 just a week prior to that on Oct. 25, the Lancers knew they would have their hands full in the rematch with the Red Raiders. They were oh-so right. In fact, after a Garth Pinnock opening kick return to the Lancer 19-yard line, it only took the Red Raiders two more plays to score on a 14-yard Francisco Guzman scamper. St. Francis’ foot was on the pedal from the onset— and it never took it off en route to a 48-28 victory that sends the Raiders to Ralph Wilson Stadium on Nov. 13 to face a Canisius squad ranked 38th in the nation. “We started out on fire and the kids carried it through,” Red Raiders head coach Jerry Smith said. “It was a good solid game all the way around.” Leading the way for St. Francis (5-5) was sophomore quarterback Jerry Hickson, who ran for one touchdown and passed for two, and completed 15 of 26 throws for 280 yards and just one interception. St. Mary’s quarterback
Takal Molson, on the other hand, threw three picks in the first half for a Lancer offense that tallied 421 total yards to the Red Raiders’ 468. And while those numbers are close, the game was anything but—and ended the Lancers’ season with a 6-4 record. “It is disappointing to come out flat like that, especially in a big playoff game,” St. Mary’s skipper Chris Glenn said. “The difference that was obvious to us is a weight room thing and preparation thing. “It’s a great group of kids, though,” he added. “They battled all year.” In their way on Nov. 6, though, was Hickson—who now has 2,520 passing yards in his sophomore campaign, a new school record. He’s also completed 179 passes for another single-season school mark, while his 22 touchdowns in 2014 ties him with former Connelly Cup winner Mike Radon. “ J e r r y ’s v e r y g o o d . He’s well-coached and a phenomenal talent,” Glenn said, “and when you can’t defend the pass and can’t stop the run as well as you need to, a kid like that’s gonna pick you apart—and that what he did the last two times we played them.” Hickson, though, didn’t take all the credit. “Against these guys, we really focus on our run game, and since we kept pounding them with the ball, it opened up op-

“We just need to minimize our mistakes,” Hickson said of the pending matchup, “and just play a good game on offense and defense.” It won’t hurt either if senior defensive back Kordell Holness-Lightbody has another game like he did against St. Mary’s. The 6-foot-1, 165 pounder senior was responsible for two of his club’s interceptions on the night, along with one by Jarryd Taylor. “The defense was just
playing a deep zone,” said Holness-Lightbody, who also caught four balls for 55 yards and a TD on offense. “I just basically had to take the deepest guy, and looking at (Molson’s) eyes, I saw where he was going to go and just picked them off and made the plays.” After being down 33-6 at halftime, St. Mary’s did score twice on St. Francis’ second string defense in the fourth quarter, but that group won’t likely see much action against Canisius in the semifinals, so the first string will have to be ready for the duration against the Crusaders. “It’s gonna be tough,” Holness-Lightbody said, “but I think we can do it. We have all week to gameplan, so I think we’ll be alright.” The biggest part of that game plan for Smith will be assignment based; knowing all too well which Crusaders can hurt them. “We just have to try to matchup the best we can, and come up with a supreme effort,” he said. “It’s still only high school football, so anything can happen. You never know.” In order to have success, though, the Red Raiders will also need the offensive balance they had against St. Mary’s, when six backs combined for their 188 rushing yards. Manny Williams led the ground-pound with 12 touches for 68 yards. Brandon Metz also had 5 rushes for 44 yards plus a
43-yard receiving score, while Tyler Kraus caught a 39-yard TD score midway through the second quarter. Guzman also averaged more than 10 yards for each his 5 carries—two of which went for scores. “The running game opens everything up,” Smith explained. “You saw that tonight. It gave (Hickson) a chance to open it up in the air, and he did a good job.” The same can be said for St. Mary’s’ Anthony Stitt, who tried to keep his Lancers in the game with 9 carries for 132 yards and 2 TDs. Christian Osborne also added a pair of catches for 70 yards and a TD, while Molson completed 9 of 22 passes and ran the ball 15 times for 60 yards on the brisk night. The Lancer defense was led by Ray Cooper and Isiah Hinton, who equally combined for 14 tackles, while Paul Bargnesi also accounted for 5. Molson joined in on the action from his cornerback position with 5 tackles and an interception. Metz and Robert Dempey each had 6 tackles for the Red Raiders’ D, and Devin Delmont tallied 5. Guzman, John Hayes and Tim Smith contributed 4 each in the cause, while Hayes secured 3 sacks. Teammates Delmont and Williams also got to the elusive Molson once each, and George Kline added a fumble recovery in the contest.
Patience pays off for former St. Francis goalie Diebold By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR
Sometimes it just takes a little patience. Patience on the ice and patience in the classroom. For RPI senior netminder Scott Diebold (St. Francis High School), patience is something that became a virtue. After playing 45 to 50 games at St. Francis High School and being the main man at the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey league, Diebold had to wait his turn when heading to college.
It was a different feeling for him, but one he understood and got used to. “Going from playing 45 to 50 games in high school, I struggled with it a little bit,” Diebold recently said by phone. “You just have to wait your chance. You can’t worry about what you can’t control.” It would have been easy for Diebold to sit and pout over the fact he wasn’t able to get a lot of playing time early on. Instead, however, he used his time wisely, getting better at the craft he has been honing since he was a little boy. It also helped that he has had a great teacher in coach
Seth Appert. Appert took the reins during the 2006-07 season and he has worked with Diebold to get better in all aspects of his game. “One of the best goalie coaches in the game,” stated Diebold. “Inevitable that you will get better.” After seeing limited action during his freshman and sophomore campaigns, Diebold took the bull by the horns last season and played in 36 games — 35 of which were starts — boasting a 2.50 goals against average. The fact that he was able to get back on the ice regularly was rewarding for him as he put in the extra work during practice and before
games. “You just have to treat every practice like it’s a game,” Diebold said. “It’s been a blast.” It also has been a blast in the classroom. But it didn’t start that way in the beginning. After being used to a routine in high school, when Diebold went off to play junior, he didn’t have to take any classes. It was just hockey all the time every day. So when he entered RPI and tackled the academic rigors that accompany the school, it took the former Red Raider some time getting used to the flow again. “I was used to laying around playing hockey,”
laughed Diebold. “School was on another level. It blindsided me at first. I had to learn how to study again.” And learn he did. The industrial and management engineering major thanks St. Francis High School for getting him ready for the academic rigors that RPI present. “Academic are unreal at Frannies,” said Diebold. “They hold you to a high academic standard. It puts you in a different category.” Another category Diebold would like to be in is that of a professional hockey player after he graduates. He sees the success of some of his friends that have gone on to
either play in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), American Hockey League (AHL) or overseas in Europe. The fact that they have had success gives him reason that he will be able to succeed as well. If it doesn’t workout, however, then he will always have a backup plan. “I have been at the rink with these guys, played with these guys. Vinny is doing well and Anthony is doing well overseas,” said Diebold. “I definitely want to play hockey somewhere. But if it doesn’t work out, I will go back to school in Buffalo.” Always the patient person.

Sitting in the front row of the team meeting room at UB Stadium, Mann saw the word “BUFFALO” flash on the big screen during the Women’s College Cup selection show. “It was one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen,” said Mann, a Frontier High School graduate
and senior captain on the UB women’s soccer team. “Being a local kid, seeing that name up there, that’s what you dream about.” As a 15 seed, UB (16-23) will face No. 6-ranked Penn State (17-3) in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Nov. 14) on the Nittany Lions home field in University Park, Pa. “It’s going to be a big
challenge,” said junior Jackie Hall, the MAC Defensive Player of the Year. “But go big or go home, right?” Hall scored the winning goal in Sunday’s MAC Championship game at UB Stadium, capping off a record-breaking run in which the Bulls went unbeaten at home (11-0-1) and in conference play (11-0-2). “This team has been making history all year long, so it’s another op-
portunity for us,” firstyear coach Shawn Burke said. UB’s only two losses have come on the road at No. 19 Virginia Tech and Cornell. Penn State won its 16th Big 10 regular season championship this season but was upset in the conference tournament by Northwestern. This will be the Bulls first appearance in the Women’s College Cup following just the fourth
team MAC team championship in UB’s history. “It starts at the top with the leadership from our captains and seniors,” Burke said. Mann was one of eight UB players named to the all-conference teams. She was joined on the firstteam by Hall, MAC Offensive Player of the Year Katie Roberts, and goalkeeper Laura Dougall, who was also named MAC Freshman of the Year. Burke, who was named
MAC Coach of the Year, recruited Mann and most of the Bulls top players during his time as an assistant coach, and believed the talent was in place to have a special season when he interviewed for the head job last spring. Mann was one of the first players he recruited. “In eight years of coaching in college, she is one of the best athletes I’ve ever worked with,” Burke said earlier this season.

Before his show, he explored the American and Canadian sides of the falls and roamed around the city his father grew up in. “It’s so beautiful,” he said about the area. “It’s really cool to wander around and see the town.” Jost is also working on starting a career writing screenplays for movies. “It’s the hardest writing process because there’s so much going on. You have to make the script unique and funny and interesting for the viewer.” After having multiple screenplays rejected, or being accepted but having nothing created, his first movie finally came through. “Staten Island Summer,” a film filled with “Saturday Nigh Live” cast members about lifeguards who are spending their last week of summer together before they go away to college, is expected to be out in the spring or summer of 2015. “I’ve learned I’m pretty resilient,” Jost said. “If you really want something, stick with it and work at it. Eventually you will break through in some way.”

er submitted a second packet. This time he received a phone call and went in for an interview with the show’s head writer, Tina Fey. She liked Jost and he moved on to another interview, with Michaels. “At the end he was like, ‘I’ll be seeing you around,’” Jost said about the show’s creator and producer. “I was not sure what it meant. Then I got a call interpreting what Lorne said and I started the next week.” His writing received a lot of laughs and Jost worked his way up the “SNL” writing chain, earning him Emmy nominations along the way. Some of his favorite skits include when the cast sang Billy Joel’s “Goodnight Saigon” on Will Ferrell’s finale show, when Jonah Hill serenaded his “wife” for their anniversary and when Vanessa Bayer portrayed Miley Cyrus after her performance on MTV’s Video Music Awards. His favorite guests to write for are the ones who have an inherent comedy in them, such as Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifanakis and Emma Stone. He hopes to someday have the chance to write skits for comedians Eddie Murphy and Stephen Colbert, as well as actors Kate Winslet and Michael Keaton. Outside of “Saturday Night Live,” Jost enjoys performing stand-up shows. “I’m a lot looser and goofier
