The Clarence girls tennis team finished the team portion of its schedule with an 8-7 record overall and a 4-6 record in league play.

Clarence girls tennis wraps up regular season By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER

The Clarence Red Devils girls varsity tennis team has finished the team por-

tion of the 2014 season. The team finished with an 8-7 overall record and a 4-6 record in its division. This year’s Red Devils picked up one more win than last year’s 7-5 overall team. According to ECIC Section VI rules, the best player on a tennis team plays first singles in each match. For Clarence, that player this year was junior Nicole Kozinski.

Kozinski’s play was key to Clarence’s 8-7 record this year, with a 13-2 individual record for the season. Clarence played in the ECIC singles championship on Tuesday (Oct. 14). Kozinski again showed why she’s the best player on the Clarence team, as she won four matches at the championship and finished second. Kozinski’s only

two losses this year came to Hailey Hollins. That’s nothing to be too disappointed about, as Hollins, a senior on the Orchard Park varsity team, was the ECIC champion of the 2014 season. The ECIC Silver Team Championships on Tuesday finished the season for Clarence. With a strong effort, especially from Kozinski, Clarence

finished second out of seven teams playing in the championship. Only Williamsville North was better than Clarence, as the Williamsville North team was the winner of the whole event. The ECIC Doubles Championships took place Friday (Oct. 17) at Village Glen Tennis Club. Results were not immediately available.

Clarence will move on from the doubles championships to ECIC sectionals the following Friday (Oct. 24), which will also take place at Village Glen Tennis Club. The girls hope to move on from there to State Championships and advance as far as they can this season.

Red Devils driven by strong defensive effort in win By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER

Clarence’s Andrew Peek defends against Frontier player Tom Sentz.

The Clarence Red Devils boys varsity soccer team continues to struggle to score goals, but its strong defense keeps it in the game more often than not. It happened again Tuesday (Oct. 14) in a 1-0 win over the Lancaster Redskins. Clarence’s defense kept the game scoreless as the offense worked to create opportunities to score. Clarence goalie Kyle Cunningham did his part too, making a few impressive saves when the defense couldn’t keep the ball out of Clarence’s end. About halfway through the first half, Cunningham dove across the net to keep the game scoreless. At halftime, the game was still locked at 0-0. Clarence started off the

second half strong, keeping the ball in Lancaster’s end for a while. But the team was unable to score with the few opportunities it created. The Redskins gave themselves a few opportunities to score, but strong defense limited those opportunities and Cunningham made saves when he needed to. Clarence was lucky on a few of Lancaster’s shot attempts, too, as the ball sailed over the net a few times. Clarence finally scored with 12:56 remaining in the second half. Noah Buetner scored the goal. Sam Sutherland picked up the assist as his cross to Buetner set up the shot. Clarence improved to 9-2-3 with the win, and the Red Devils were happy to pick up a win against Lancaster after losing 2-1 in double overtime two weeks ago. A win Thursday (Oct. 16) over Frontier would give Clarence a secondplace finish in ECIC I behind only Orchard Park. For a team that has trouble scoring goals, a

9-2-3 record near the end of the season is impressive and right where the team needs to be. Clarence coach Mike Silverstein was more than happy with the win. “I thought it was a full 80 minutes we played,” he said. “I really think we played well for 80 minutes, especially defensively.” Defense was, of course, the strength for the Red Devils on Tuesday. “ We ’ v e b e e n h a v i n g trouble scoring goals all year long, and we know we just have to defend,” Silverstein said. “Keep them off the board, keep them at zeros, and I thought our defense played outstanding. Kyle Cunningham was great in net, and we eventually got opportunities to score and finally finished one.” Ben Harsch, Sean Palmer, Austin Knorz, and Cunningham were the key players for Clarence, along with Nick Williams and Tanner Geiger on defense.

Jamestown too much for Clarence in Red Devils’ loss

By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER

Nothing worked right for Clarence in its 41-7 loss to Jamestown on Oct. 11. The Red Devils’ game plan was to run the ball effectively on offense while limiting the big plays on defense. The game went according to plan for Clarence for the first quarter. On the opening drive, Jamestown fumbled the ball, turning it over to Clarence on Jamestown’s 12-yard line. The Red Devils were unable to capitalize on the drive, however, forcing them to punt. The Jamestown Red Raiders weren’t able to do much with the ball either. A sack by Clarence’s Bill Lorenz gave Jamestown a loss of 10 yards, and they

were eventually forced to punt as well. Jamestown scored its first touchdown just over a minute into the second quarter as quarterback Nikkolas Holland took the ball himself into the end zone, but a fumble by the Red Raiders on their next drive gave Clarence a huge opportunity. Lorenz recovered the ball for Clarence and ran it 39 yards back. The Red Devils took over at Jamestown’s 10yard line, and three rushes later, they were in the end zone. Angelo Marzullo ran the ball on all three plays, scoring Clarence’s first touchdown and tying the game at 7. And then it fell apart for Clarence. The rest of the game was dominated by Jamestown, both offensively and defensively. The Red Raiders scored on the next drive to take a 14-7 lead and went on to score 34 unanswered points. Jamestown’s defense held the Red Devils, controlling the run

Scott Pinto and the Clarence football team fell to Jamestown, 41-7. game and putting pressure on Clarence’s offense that it couldn’t overcome. Clarence quarterback Scott Pinto was sacked four times. Clarence’s next drive resulted in an interception by Jamestown, one of two picks for the day for the Red Raid-

ers. They took a 20-7 lead after taking over on downs. The Red Devils did succeed in limiting turnovers for the rest of the game, but they weren’t able to capitalize on offense on any of their subsequent drives. The pressure from Jamestown’s offense was just too much.

Meanwhile, Jamestown scored on three of the next four drives to take a 41-7 lead. The Red Raiders fumbled the ball on their last drive of the game, and Paul Tomasello recovered the ball. Clarence had one last chance to score, but they

were at their own 45-yard line when time ran out. Coach Mark Layer knew what his team was up against: an outstanding football team both offensively and defensively. He complimented the Red Raiders. “Jamestown is an outstanding football team,” Layer said. “They controlled the line of scrimmage and have multiple weapons on offense. Defensively they were able to control our run game and put pressure on our quarterback when we tried to throw. They are one of the top teams in Western New York.” Those weapons included Holland and wide receiver Stephen Carlson, who scored two of Jamestown’s touchdowns The Red Devils once again fought hard but were overmatched. Layer remains pleased with his team’s competitiveness and effort. Clarence fell to 1-5 with the loss. The Red Devils will face Niagara Falls on Saturday (Oct. 18) at 2 p.m.

Clarence to visit Niagara Falls for final regular season game

By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER

The Clarence Red Devils will play their final game of the regular season on Saturday on the road against the Niagara Falls Wolverines. Clarence enters the game with a 1-5 record, while Niagara Falls is 4-2. The Wolverines are a fast

team, and Clarence will need to control that speed as much as it can. “Niagara Falls has great speed,” Clarence head coach Mark Layer said. “We will need to control the running game and pressure their quarterback.” The Red Devils’ game plan will be to similar to what it’s been the past two weeks: effectively run the ball. At the beginning of the season, Clarence planned to mix up its offense a little bit, hoping to pass and run the ball equally. But as the season has gone on, most of the Red Devils’success has come from running the ball.

The plan for this week will be based on that. In addition, the Red Devils will have to protect quarterback Scott Pinto, who was sacked four times last week by Jamestown. “Offensively, we must move the ball on the ground effectively and protect the quarterback when we throw,” Layer said. Although Niagara Falls boasts a 4-2 record, every win has been relatively low-scoring. The Wolverines haven’t scored more than 27 points in a game. Meanwhile, Clarence has scored 19 points in every game except last week’s 41-7 loss.

In Clarence’s highest-scoring game this year, the Red Devils scored 31 points On the other side of the ball, Niagara Falls has never allowed more than 30 points, and that happened in a close 30-26 loss to Kenmore West. The 41 points Clarence gave up to Jamestown last weekend were the most the Red Devils have allowed to an opponent all season. Clarence and Niagara Falls have not faced any of the same opponents this year, so it is difficult to know how they’ll match up in Saturday’s game. Despite effort and com-

Clarence is aiming for a strong performance at sectionals on Oct. 24.

This year’s tennis team is young but works hard in every match. Coach Mike DelSignore is happy with what his team did this year and pleased with the work each girl put in. “ We a r e y o u n g a n d hard-working,” DelSignore said. “I was pleased with the overall effort and attitude of the players.” Clarence is hoping to go as far as possible this season before looking to next year. DelSignore is looking forward to a more mature and experienced team next year. Kozinski is a junior this year, so she will still be on next year’s team as a key player and leader. Also, she’ll no longer have to face Hollins next year. “I am looking forward to next year,” DelSignore said. With the team he has and the growth expected, there is much to look forward to.

petitiveness this season from Clarence, it’s been a frustrating season with the only win coming in the first game of the season. Layer still talks about the competitiveness that he’s seen from his team all year. “We have played competitively in all of our games,” he said. “We have not been able to break through in the win-loss column as much as we would have liked, and that is disappointing.” Layer takes his team into Saturday’s game with pride in their effort and positivity. “Our players have given their best each and every week,” he

said. “I am very proud of this group of kids. They have stuck together in the face of adversity and come to practice each day with a positive outlook.” The Red Devils work hard every day. Layer said at the beginning of the season that he’d never been associated with a varsity team who put in as much work as the team he’s coaching this year. Clarence finished last season with two wins. A win Saturday would match that. The Red Devils hope that their hard work, competitiveness, effort, and positivity can earn them a win on Saturday.

Stallions the first to skate Cornerstone On Tuesday, Oct. 7, the Mite Major Clarence Stallions became the first patrons to take the ice at Cornerstone CFCU Arena in Lockport. The Stallions practiced from 6-7 p.m. During the half hour before the team took the ice, players watched as workers raised the center ice scoreboard from the ice to the ceiling and then walked on particleboard placed over the ice in order to install the last of the plexiglass panels around the rink. The Zamboni came on at 5:51 p.m. and then, like clockwork, the players took the ice. Arena architect, Jim Bammel, opened the door to the ice and gave high fives to Stallions players Miles Santa Maria, Cameron Stadelmaier, and Nic Zivis as they made the very first tracks ever at Cornerstone CFCU Arena. The Clarence Hockey

organization has rented a considerable amount of ice. Their logo will be displayed at center ice on one of the two rinks. ••• On Oct. 5, the Mite Major Clarence Stallions played a home game at Hockey Outlet in North Tonawanda against the Rochester Grizzlies. The Grizzlies scored first. Nic Zivis tied the game, assisted by Luke Marchant. Drew Idzik of North Tonawanda and fellow Stallions' defensemen Owen McIntyre, Joey Manguso, Maximus Henning and Tucker Schoen kept the Grizzlies from scoring again until late in the second. The Grizzlies led late in the third period, 2-1, and Clarence went on a power play. But the Grizzlies managed a short handed goal and the game ended 3-1.

Defensive game still proves exciting “Soccer” from page B1 “Our whole defense was, I think, the superstars of the day,” Silverstein said. When asked who had the assist on Buetner’s goal, Sil-

verstein had to check with his players before confirming that it was Sutherland. “I’m not even sure,” he said. “I just watched it go

in the net.” It was that kind of a win for Clarence. It might sound strange to call a strong defensive game an excit-

ing win, but that’s what it was for the Red Devils. A strong and excited team is finishing up another strong season.

PRO FOOTBALL CORNER

FROM the SIDELINES Bills, ECMC team up to ‘Pink the Falls’, spread awareness By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR

Buffalo Bills long snapper Garrison Sanborn doesn’t mind wearing pink during October. Despite the machismo culture football players are generally bound to, Sanborn — and his teammates — are all in if it means supporting a worthy cause. That notion was validated when Sanborn joined ECMC,

the ECMC Lifeline Foundation and a host of his Bills teammates at the organization’s ninth annual “Billieve” Breast Cancer Awareness event on Oct. 10 in Niagara Falls, New York. Sanborn, EJ Manuel, C.J. Spiller, Corey Graham, Dan Carpenter, Kyle Williams, Scott Chandler and Ron Brooks were among the many Bills players in attendance decked out in their jerseys and finest pink apparel.

And Sanborn had no problem with that. “Anything you can do to draw attention to something like this helps,” Sanborn said. “Even somebody who doesn’t know what the pink is all about is going to ask why all these tough guys on the field are wearing pink. “Now all the sudden they think about it and one kid might say something to his mom and if it saves one life, it’s worth it.” Players weren’t just there to don pink, though. They were active participants in the evening’s festivities and helped form Hard Rock’s International PINKTOBER Living Ribbon across the Rainbow Bridge, which was symbolic of the United States and Canada’s unity in the fight against breast cancer. Breast cancer survivors, participants and Bills players walked from the Hard Rock Cafe on Prospect Street to the Rainbow Bridge. As the Living Ribbon, which spanned the bridge, was formed, Niagara Falls was illuminated pink as a means to further spread awareness. Registered participants paid $30, received a pink pashmina and reserved a spot on the bridge. All proceeds from the Living Ribbon and

Bills kicker Dan Carpenter, a seventh-year NFL veteran, noted how impactful the visual of festivities like the Living Ribbon and the illumination of Niagara Falls can be. “The NFL is on national TV every day,” Carpenter said. “It’s always in the news. Highlights are always on. So anytime you can get

public figures out there wearing pink ribbons, pink shoes, pink gloves, attending this event, interacting with fans, anything to bring awareness, I think it’s a good thing.” For Chandler, the Bills No. 1 tight end, the event is a very good thing. So good, in fact, that he and his wife have attended it for several years running. Chandler’s mother-in-law is a breast cancer survivor. In addition to her presence at the Billieve event, she — along with many other breast cancer survivors — were

honored during the Bills’ game against the Patriots on Oct. 12. “She got to come to the event and be on the field with the survivors as we ran onto the field,” Chandler said. “So this is something we’re big supporters of and we’re really being there for the survivors here tonight.” After the Living Ribbon was formed, Kiss 98.5’s Nicholas Picholas emceed a two-band outdoor concert featuring The Diva Show and The Spazmatics 80s Tribute Band.

THE COLLEGE Football coach Quinn fired after Bulls’ 3-4 start By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Two months ago, University at Buffalo athletics director Danny White declared football coach Jeff Quinn was “doing an unbelievable job of building this program.” “It’s built to last, and built to win consistently,” White said during a celebratory opening address on UB’s preseason media day. “We’re really excited about this upcoming season and the future of UB football.”

This week, White decided Quinn was no longer doing a good enough job, and was no longer part of the future for UB football. “It is with great disappointment that we have to make this change,” White said in a news release announcing Quinn’s firing midway through the coach’s fifth year running the Bulls. UB has lost two in a row to fall to 3-4 this season, after going 8-5 in 2013 and earning an invitation to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Even after leading the Bulls

to their highest regular season win total since they rejoined the Division I ranks in 1999, Quinn leaves with a lopsided losing record of 20-36. Five of his wins came against lower division opponents. UB squandered seven-point halftime leads in both last week’s 36-35 loss at Bowling Green and Saturday’s 37-27 loss at Eastern Michigan, which hastened Quinn’s dismissal. “Unfortunately, the performance on the field this season and over Coach Quinn’s tenure has not matched our expectations for the growth of Bulls

football,” White said. White promoted offensive coordinator Alex Wood to interim head coach, and announced a national search for a new head coach. UB has averaged 33 points and 476 yards on offense this season, while the defense has given up an average of 35 points and 441 yards. In five games against FBS foes, the Bulls allowed an average of 42 points and nearly 500 yards. UB is idle this weekend and returns to action Oct. 25 at home against Central Michigan.

“With the bye week, our coaches and student-athletes have an opportunity to evaluate themselves and make the changes needed to improve,” White said. UB is 1-2 in Mid-American Conference play and trails East division leader Bowling Green by two games. The Bulls must win four of their last five games to be bowl eligible. Quinn is the ninth head coach White has dismissed in less than 27 months on the job. UB has yet to win a MidAmerican Conference championship under White’s watch.

White extended Quinn’s original five-year contract in November, 2012, in the midst of a third straight losing season, saying at the time, “I’m extremely confident in Jeff’s ability to recruit and develop these young men to be champions on both the field and in life.” “UB Athletics may have more potential than any other department in America,” White said in 2012. “To make it a reality, we need to build sustained success in football, year in and year out, and I believe that Coach Quinn and his staff are leading us there.”

Home-field advantage: Licata 10-1 at UB Stadium By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Joe Licata was born 14 months after construction began on the current UB Stadium. No quarterback has won more often at the stadium than Licata. Licata, the Williamsville South graduate now in his junior season at the University at Buffalo, improved to 10-2 as a starter in home games and 10-1 at UB Stadium. One of Licata’s home losses came last year at

Ralph Wilson Stadium, and the other came last month against the No. 7 team in the country, Baylor. Drew Willy, the recordsetting quarterback recently inducted into UB’s Athletics Hall of Fame, won eight home games in his career. With a year and a half left in his career, Licata is chasing down Willy’s records in no-huddle fashion. Licata is now second alltime in touchdown passes at UB. He’s thrown 49 touchdowns in 806 career attempts. Willy threw 52 touchdowns in 1,322 at-

tempts. His career passer rating (134.6) ranks third all-time behind Tracy LaTona (136.4 from 1949-50) and Gordon Bukaty (135.6 from 195860). Willy’s final rating was 128.2. Licata has also risen into the top five in career passing yards (5,756), completion rate (59.1) completions (476), yards-per-attempt (7.1). Willy, who spent parts of two seasons on NFL rosters and is now the starting quarterback for the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers, holds

the all-time records with 849 completions and 8,748 yards. He averaged 6.6 yards per attempt in his career. Off to a brilliant start this season, Licata’s 149.8 passer rating is on track to break Willy’s record of 139.3 set in 2008. Licata’s 7.8 yards-perattempt would rank second all-time behind Marty Barett’s mark of 8.1 in 1981. Licata is also on track to set single-season records in passing yards and touchdowns. He is currently tied for the Mid-American Conference lead and his sixth in

the country with 18 touchdown passes in five games. His 1,887 passing yards rank third in the MAC. His 65.1 percent completion rate is the best in the MAC. Willy set UB’s singleseason records with 3,304 yards, 25 touchdowns and a 68.4 percent completion rate in the 13-game 2008 season. At this point in his career, Licata doesn’t care much for statistical records. “Maybe years down the road it will mean something to me,” Licata said. “But right now, there’s only one thing I’m concerned with

and that’s getting a (championship) ring on my finger.” But Licata, who chose UB when he had scholarship offers from Syracuse University and University of North Carolina, among other schools, is proud of his winning record in his hometown. Told that he was now the all-time wins leader at UB Stadium and was one win away from matching Barrett’s record of 11 wins at Buffalo’s old Rotary Field, Licata took a moment to appreciate the milestone. “That,” he said, “gave me chills.”
