Wassail is a hot cider traditionally served in a large bowl at Christmastime.

1/2 gallon apple cider or juice 1 lemon, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons brown sugar 2 cinnamon sticks (3 inches each) 12 whole allspice 12 whole cloves 6 lady apples or 1 Golden Delicious apple 1 cup applejack or apple brandy, optional 1. In 5-quart Dutch oven, combine cider, lemon slices, brown sugar, cinnamon sticks and allspice; heat to boiling over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes. 2. Insert 2 cloves into each lady apple or all cloves into Golden Delicious apple. Makes about 8 cups, or 16 servings. • Each serving: About 110 calories, 0g protein, 18g carbohydrate, 0g total fat, 0g fiber, 0mg cholesterol, 5mg sodium. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have arthritis in both knees, injuries from the past. My knees hurt when going up and down stairs, not level ground. How do I go about finding a good orthopedic doctor to check out my knees? There are so many doctors who do knee surgery. -- D.M.P. ANSWER: Well, I must admit to some bias here as an internist. I would recommend starting with a rheumatologist, an expert in medical treatment of joint problems, or an internist, rather than going first to a surgeon. While orthopedic surgeons certainly have expertise in all kinds of treatment (both medical and surgical), I reserve the expertise of the orthopedic surgeons for the people with knee pain who, after a medical evaluation, I think might

benefit from surgery. Knee pain is such a common problem that any rheumatologist will be expert in diagnosing your condition. There are many kinds of arthritis, each with different treatments and prognoses. It’s a good rule of thumb not to see a surgeon unless you think you need surgery, and you don’t know enough yet to make that decision. *** DR. ROACH WRITES: In February, I answered a question from a woman who wanted to help her husband cut down on alcohol use. I recommended against ever drinking more than five drinks a day. Five per day (four for women) is the usual definition of binge drinking, and linked with high risk for serious medical and social problems. In no way did I mean to sug-

gest that this is a healthy amount of drinking. Whil some studies have shown reduced risk of heart diseas among moderate (one to two drinks per day for men one-half to one for women drinkers, this is not proo that drinking is good fo you. WRAPPING UP 2014 To get a running start on 2015, make time between holiday obligations to take care of financial and household business that needs to be wrapped up before the end of the year. Here are some possibilities: • Are there any credits cards you can pay off now and start the New Year with a zero balance? • Make donations to a charity so you get the tax deduction for 2014. Review Charity Navigator, CharityWatch and GuideStar to be sure your money is going to a worthy cause and not administration fees. • Calculate your tax withholding to be sure it’s on target so you don’t pay extra taxes starting in 2015. Births, deaths, marriage and divorce all are reasons to review your withholding. Don’t cut it too close, but paying extra (and getting a big refund in April) means you’re giving

an interest-free loan to the government. • Determine whether you can make an additional contribution to your 401(k). Whatever you put in your account is tax deferred until the money is withdrawn. • If you own a home, make one additional mortgage payment before the end of the year. Do it early enough that it arrives in the mail and is processed so it shows up on your end of year Form 1098 statement. • Check the balance of your medical flexible spending account and try to use it up before the end of the year when you could lose it. You’re only allowed to roll over $500 into 2015. Some companies allow a grace period to March before the funds must be used or lost, but determine your company’s policy to be certain. Make appointments for eye exams and glasses, have

periodic lab work done and schedule a medical checkup. • Review your life-insurance policies and retirement accounts, not only to see if they need to be changed in any way, but to consider the beneficiaries of both. If there have been births, deaths, marriages or divorces, or minors becoming adults, you might want to make changes. • Open an IRA, if you don’t have one. The income is tax deferred. The limit is $5,500, or if you’re age 50 and older, the limit is $6,500. • If you have property taxes that are partially due in 2015, pay the total amount in advance and deduct on Schedule A. The Buffalo Zoo announced on Dec. 15, the name of a baby giraffe who was born in October. His name is Sampson. Sampson was born on Friday, Oct. 24, to mother, 5-year-old A.J, and father, 3-year-old Moke. Both are ÀUVW WLPH SDUHQWV The day was a special one for giraffe keeper, Vicki Hodge. Oct. 24 is her grandparents’ wedding anniversary, and also the anniversary of the death of her grandfather, whose middle name was Sampson. She named the baby in memory of him. The name announcement coincides with a series of billboards that were unveiled around the Buffalo area the same day, revealing Sampson’s name to the community. Community Papers of WNY, LLC and LAMAR Outdoor Advertising provided the billboards, “A New Baby, A New Year”. CPOWNY will roll out a year of family-friendly activities and promotions on and off Zoo grounds throughout 2015. These efforts serve not only to welcome the giraffe and promote the Zoo as an institution of family recreation, but also to highlight conservation efforts and educational offerings for the community at large. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Pride” (R) -- When you think of groups who have formed iron-clad alliances, you really don’t think of coal miners and gay activists as brothers in arms. However, in England in 1984, coal miners had to fight to keep their industry alive and their hometowns from folding under pressure from the Thatcher administration. A group of gay and lesbian activists sympathize with the plight of the miners, and earnestly offer their help to the perplexed workers. It’s a high-spirited Brit comedy with good intentions and the right tone. The characters are cut sympathetically, the jokes are charming, and emotional weight is earnest without being cloying. Sexual activities and questions are referenced, but it never gets raunchy. It’s a crowd pleaser with a good outlook. “1,000 Times Good Night” (R) -- As a photojournalist working in some of the world’s deadliest places, Rebecca (Juliette Binoche) faces untold danger so she can make a difference by photographing the reality of war. Her husband (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and two daughters wait for her at home in Ireland, suffering each time she leaves. When Rebecca gets too close to a suicide bomber, her husband tells her that she must stop putting her life in danger, or she’ll lose her family. The film hits hard with scenes of Rebecca navigating and snapping away as conflict, carnage and inhumanity surround her, then follows up with emotional gut-punches when she realizes what she puts her family through.

Juliette Binoche and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in “1,000 Times Good Night” ish hit “The Trip” puts comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon back on the road to semi-improvised hilarity. The two comedians play slightly fictionalized versions of themselves. They’re friends, sort of. Well, they’re adult men who are able to stand one another’s company, keep a conversation going and compete over who can do the best vocal impressions. It beats loneliness. This time, they’re on a newspaper assignment to travel around Italy, eating fine foods and writing about it. It’s a serving of dry, ridiculous humor with wellportioned bits of reality.
