COUCH THEATER DVD PREVIEWS By Sam Struckhoff

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (PG-13) -- With the city under the heel of the ruthless Foot Clan, our best hope lies in four grotesque heroes rising from the sewers of 1980s and ‘90s pop culture. The team of turtles -that’s Leonardo, Donatello, Michaelangelo and Raphael -- spew groan-worthy oneliners while leaping from explosions and fighting various thugs. The series’ supervillain, Shredder, gets a sharp robo-suit instead of the usual metal-plated outfit. While this reviewer will never forget the role The Turtles played in his younger years, this is sadly one of the most forgettable flicks of the summer. Even big-budget action flicks cashing in on highly marketable nostalgic action franchises need to have a little charm, a pinch of originality. While the action flashes continually on screen, the genuine thrills are brief and far between.

Former “SNL” campaigners Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig play a pair of fraternal twins who were close throughout childhood, but have separated to different sides of the country in adulthood. Pulled together by forces outside of their control, together the twins must face all the ways their lives have not gone to plan. Among many troubles, Milo (Hader) is not the A-list actor he’d dreamed of being, and Maggie (Wiig) is facing disillusionment in her marriage.

The Dennis J. Amore Scholarship established by ACAF

The Allegany County Area Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Dennis J. Amore Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship will benefit the graduates of the Friendship Central School. It will be awarded to a high school senior or a current college student who must have a 3.0 GPA. The applicants must have participated on a high school athletic team and in a community service project within the last 12 months. Dennis J. Amore was born on May 19 in Olean. He was the son of Anthony and K. Ramona Amore. He was a 1968 graduate of Allegany Central School where he played football and baseball. In football, Denny was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year, and in baseball he was chosen as an all-star for the 1968 and 1969 seasons. Denny graduated from St. Bonaventure University with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1972. He married Rebecca Stayer in November of that same year. Rebecca and Denny had three children: Tiffany, Jason and Edward. Denny began his teaching career in Syracuse where he taught for one year. He then moved back home to teach in the Friendship Central School for the next 39 years. Along with his teaching, Denny served as athletic director and he coached soccer, basketball and softball. In 2007, he was inducted into the Allegany County Athletic Hall of Fame.

After his retirement in 2012, Denny was still an active member for the Friendship Sports Boosters, volunteering at can drives and working at the snack shack during soccer, softball and baseball games. Even as he was entering his second year of retirement, many asked when he and his wife were going to move from Friendship to some warm place near sand. His answer was always the same, “Friendship is home. Where else would I want to be?” The Friendship Central lost an unwavering pillar with Denny’s passing. The FCS Scholarship Committee wanted to create the Dennis Amore Memorial Scholarship Fund so that his commitment to FCS can help students long into the future. This scholarship will honor not only his memory, but also his commitment to the Friendship community as a whole. The Allegany County Area Foundation holds assets near $8 million and continues to add new funds each year. The endowed funds continue to grow in perpetuity to enrich and improve the lives of our Allegany County citizens. This past year the foundation awarded $239,300 in scholarships alone. If you would like more information on how you can provided a legacy of hope and good will in our community, contact the Allegany County Area Foundation at 585-808-8444 or visit their web site at www.alleganycountyareafoundation.org.

Gifts for Seniors Who Have Everything

Seniors have acquired so much “stuff” over the years that we have nearly everything we need ... and more. If you’ve held off buying a gift for a senior in your life because you don’t know what to get someone who already has everything, here are a few gift ideas that would be most welcome. • Coupons for cab rides, or gift certificates for restaurant meals, laundry services, auto detailing, spa day or hair salon services. • Gift basket created especially for your seniors, such as gourmet food, cheese, jams or chocolate. Or consider a subscription to a quarterly or monthly gift club. Options range from fruit baskets or flowers to bacon, coffee and cigars. • Pay for a year of cable TV,

the daily newspaper, magazine subscription or Netflix. • Two tickets to a play or other event where you’ll accompany your senior, or a pair of movie passes so your senior can take a friend. • Pay for a senior’s lifelong learning class, either at the senior center or nearby university, and arrange for transportation. • Put together a box of useful things, like stamps, note cards, address labels, batteries, razor blades and calendar with large print. Include a list of important phone numbers printed out in a large font that can be taped to the inside of a cupboard door. (Keep the file and make changes whenever your senior needs to update it.) • Make single serving meals

for the freezer. • Don’t leave out your own participation and that of your children. A small coupon book full of services you can do year round, such as cleaning, painting a room, weeding the garden, raking leaves and checking expiration dates on food in the cupboard all will be appreciated. What do seniors really want most? The gift of your time.
