Elks Lodge hosts dinner to honor veterans By Sallie Moppert

THE LANCASTER SUN REPORTER

The Lancaster community came together to honor and thank local veterans this past Tuesday in honor of Veteran’s Day. The Lancaster Elks Lodge 1478 on Legion Parkway hosted its annual spaghetti dinner and invited all veterans and a spouse or guest to join the community in the complimentary dinner. “This is one of our biggest events of the year,” said Co-Chairman of the dinner, Bob Wilde. “We had over 400 veterans and their family members last year and we’re hoping to serve even more than that this year.” The veterans and their guests were treated to a spaghetti and meatball dinner, which included a chef salad, bread and butter, and dessert. The Lancaster Elks also provided coffee, tea, soda and other beverages. The attendees were served and assisted by various volunteers from the community, including Boy Scouts and students from both Depew and Lancaster High School. Between the different organizations and schools, there were more than 50 volunteers that helped to set up the dining room, as well as serve, seat and assist the veterans and also helped to clean up once the dinner was over. The Women’s Military Support Network of Western New York organization was also

present at the dinner. Volunteers hosted a small basket auction to raise money for the support network. “We wanted to find a way to honor all of the veterans in the area,” explained Lancaster Elks Lodge Secretary, Camille Lewandowski. “We’ve been doing this dinner for over five years now and really enjoy this opportunity to thank all of the veterans for what they’ve done.” A special ceremony was held before the dinner was served at 2 p.m. Members of the Depew Post 1528 took an opportunity to thank all of the veterans in attendance for their service and then said a few words to all of those who are Prisoners Of War (POW) or Missing In Action (MIA) and their families. The ceremony expressed how that, even though the POW’s and MIA’s may not be physically present, they will always be in the thoughts of the community and their many anonymous sacrifices will always be appreciated, even if no one ever has a chance to personally thank them. Even though Veteran’s Day may have passed for this year, the Lancaster Elks Lodge will still be doing its part to help veterans in need. With the coming winter season, homeless veterans and those down on their luck will be in need of some fresh clothes to keep them warm and comfortable. The Elks Lodge will be collecting clothes from

Anyone interested in donating new or used clothing can contact the Elks Lodge. In addition to helping veterans, the Lancaster Elks Lodge is also very active in the community. The organization sponsors both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts Troops, gives out scholarships to local high school seniors, spends time with veterans at the VA and more. Jacobs urges Sheldon Silver to get Veterans Bill to governor

ENTER TO WIN GREAT PRIZES @

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs recently issued a letter to New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver urging him to have Assembly Bill A08231A/Senate Bill S5995A delivered to the governor for signing. This legislation, which unanimously passed both the Assembly and Senate earlier this year, prohibits the imposition of any additional fee for the issuance of a driver license or non-driver identification card with a veteran’s distinguishing mark. In 2013, a law was en-

acted that allows honorably discharged service men and women the option of having their veteran status added to their driver licenses and non-drivers identification cards. Unfortunately, the State Department of Motor Vehicles interpreted this law as requiring a veteran to pay an amendment fee to add the “veteran” status when requested prior to the renewal date of the document. “Essentially, this legislation eliminates the $12.50 amendment fee and allows this distinction to be added

free of charge, regardless of the timing. I strongly believe this designation on New York licenses and ID’s should be a benefit conferred to the New York State veteran community free of charge and not a revenue generator for government,” said Jacobs. “Since this bill received unanimous support in both houses, I find it disconcerting that this bill has not been delivered to the governor.” According to New York State law, the Assembly has until the end of the year to send the bill to the

If the Assembly fails to send the bill prior to Jan. 1 it will result in a veto. “As…we celebrate Veterans Day and honor the men and women of the armed forces who have sacrificed so much for our state and nation, it seems only appropriate that this bill be sent to the governor so that it can be signed into law,” stated Jacobs. “I respectfully urge Assembly Leader Silver to take whatever steps necessary to see that this legislation is delivered to the governor without delay.”

Rock out, raise money for Roswell Nov. 16 By Amy Robb

THE LANCASTER SUN REPORTER

Performing Arts in Depew will be teaming up with Boulevard Music Lessons to put on a show benefitting Roswell Cancer Institute and its Tuition Assistance Program. The Rock2Cure concert will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16 at The Forvm in the Maple Entertainment Complex. Students from both centers will rock out to raise money for a good cause, one which hits home for parents and relatives of students. Some have had family work there, while others have been serviced at the institute. Students enrolled in Rock Band 101 at both locations will be the stars of the show. The program can be compared to “a travel sports team,” said Owner and Instructor at Boulevard Music Lessons, Joe Childs.

Leanna Bishop and Matt Noonan of Depew will be performing with Performing Arts at the Rock 2 Cure event. “The bands are all assigned their Rock Band Coach, named, and they’re performing. Students must audition in and take mu-

dents grow, especially those that are “really moving forward and are interested in their instrument, and interested in performing,” said Sam Marabella, owner and instructor at Performing Arts. Like the Boulevard location, rock band at Performing Arts also have to audition to get into the program, and once they’re accepted there’s a coach assigned along with an instructor. Bands usually start out at 2 piece or 3 piece, and as others are accepted to the program, it might grow more with different instruments lending different dynamics to the overall sound. The instructor plays with the band at first, and little by little, as the band starts coming into its own, the instructor becomes more of an advisor than a band member. The coach walks band members through logistics and the business side of running a band, getting everyone together for meetings, creating a website on Reverbnation, and coming up with a name everyone agrees on.

“The rock bands have most certainly taken off,” added Marabella. With a performance every four weeks, maybe more often depending on how far along the band is, the program also helps build social skills and boosts confidence for teenage students, in addition to putting those lessons to good use. Blood Money and 2nd Generation are two of the bands that will be performing, showcasing a mix of seasoned and new talent. Childs himself will be performing in Blood Money on guitar, while 2nd Generation is made up of three young performers with serious heart. The Forvm is located at 4224 Maple Road in Buffalo, and tickets are available at either music school or at the door. Adults are $18 and children under 13 are $10. For more information please call 725-5060 or visit the Facebook event page titled Rock2Cure @ The Forum – A Fundraiser Event for Roswell & Tuition Assistance.

As a member of the committee, Morton will vote on any amendments to the budget before a package is sent to the full Legislature for consideration. “The key responsibility of the Legislature is to approve a balanced budget that delivers quality

services and is mindful of taxpayers. The Legislature received the proposed 2015 budget in mid-October and began to review that plan, which includes $40 million in new spending. I think we need to look at all options to make cuts before adopting the final budget. In early November, the committee will be holding budget hearings and hopefully identifying areas where we can save. My goal during this process is to deliver a tax decrease to taxpayers,” said Morton.

LVAC to hold food drive

The Lancaster Volunteer Ambulance Corps. (LVAC) in partnership with the Office of Emergency Management (OEM), is holding a food drive to support the Trinity Food Pantry from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22. Collections will occur at the Tops in the D&L Plaza and Walmart on Transit Road at William Street. “Part of our mission is to help improve the quality of life of those in our community. The pantry has a similar mission to ours and is in dire need of help,” ex-

The Legislative budget hearings with the county’s departments will be held Nov. 17 to Nov. 20. The public will have the opportunity to comment on the budget during the public hearing being held at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24 in Legislature Chambers, 92 Franklin St., Fourth Floor, Buffalo. For additional information or questions about a county issue, please contact Legislator Morton at 858-8856 or email ted. morton@erie.gov.

plained LVAC Director Allison Revelas. Representatives from the OEM and LVAC will be present at both locations taking collections of non- perishable food items, toiletries, and monetary donations. “We are asking people to keep in mind the families which may be struggling currently, and to pick up a few items while they do their shopping. The Trinity Food Pantry is right here in Lancaster and serves our friends and neighbors,” remarked Kyle Haniszewski, event co-

chair. The LVAC Explorers Post will be actively involved in the event, providing blood pressure checks. High blood pressure affects more than 900 million worldwide. LVAC recommends having it checked on a regular basis. The event will occur rain or shine so please show your support for the Trinity Food Pantry and the families it serves by stopping by to see OEM and LVAC at either location.

St. Mary’s Lady Lancers cap off near-perfect run with 2014 state title By William Wilczewski SPORTS REPORTER

There were plenty of teams in the state prep volleyball scene that were at least hoping when nationally-recognized talent Leah Meyer injured her ankle in the last game of the 2014 regular season, their team would stand a chance in the state finals on Sunday, Nov. 9. Thanks to St. Mary’s senior hitter Ashley Drzymala—and the rest of her Lady Lancers— all those hopes amounted to a hill of beans when that Catholic High School AA Championship state tourney unfolded in Lancaster on Sunday. That’s because when it was all said and done, St. Mary’s not only ended the season with the state title, but also a perfect 47-0-1 record, including four tournament wins and an equally perfect 19-0 record in Monsignor Martin Athletic Association league play. The final victory of 2014 came in the form of a 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-23) whitewashing of St. Anthony’s (Melville) Lady Friars, after the Lady Lancers went 3-0 in pool play and also beat Hartsdale’s Maria Regina 25-8, 25-10 in the semifinals. The strange part, though, was that St. Mary’s’ 3-1 MMAA finals victory over Nardin on Nov. 5 proved more challenging of a night than the five-match cruise they took to hoist the state title plaque in their home gym on Sunday—which says a lot for the quality of volleyball in the western part of the state, if you ask Lady Lancer skipper Don Pieczynski.

“I’m a big proponent ofWestern New York volleyball,” he said. “I know the gauntlet that our kids have to go through … and I’ve said all along, I know we don’t have Leah Meyer, but neither does the other team. And I know if we can dig her, we can dig anybody in the state.” And that’s exactly what St. Mary’s did on Sunday, when Drzymala finished the title game with 24 kills, a .302 hitting percentage and 19 of those digs. She also tallied 76 total kills on the night, plus a .435 hitting percentage and 41 digs. “I don’t even know what to say,” Drzymala said. “This has been our dream since we came in here as freshmen. “I played the whole game for (Meyer), and I told her so,” the senior outside hitter added, then recalled the day her best friend—a Duke University commit—mangled her ankle by running into a referee stand. “I think I knew that the weight of the world kinda fell on my shoulders, and I felt a lot of pressure,” Drzymala explained, “but I knew if I saw her on the sidelines cheering me on, I would definitely get through it. When she went down that game, I couldn’t look at her once or else I would start crying, but she pushed me through it. She’s my best friend, and she always will.” Meyer, however, knew that Drzymala—and the rest of her teammates—would pull through with flying colors. “I wasn’t surprised at all,” the 6-foot-3, 170-pounder said. “I knew that every single one of them was going to step up and play the way I know they would. I’m speechless right now. It was unforgettable.” One person that might want to forget it is St.Anthony’s head coach Donna Newman, whose

WILLIAM ‘SKI’ WILCZEWSKI

The St. Mary’s volleyball team celebrates its Catholic state championship victory over St. Anthony’s on Nov. 9. club went 2-3 on the night. “It was a little disappointing. We didn’t pass well or serve receive, and that was our downfall,” Newman said. “We only passed 65 percent; that’s what hurt us. They were focused, but it’s a long thing to put everything in one day. It affects how you play when they condense everything in one day.” Still, St. Anthony’s top player—senior Allison Impellizeri—managed 12 kills in the title match. “She’s been our senior leadership coming in,” Newman said of her go-to girl. “She’s averaged 26 kills in matches and at least six blocks a game.” Like Meyer, Impellizeri and Lady Friar setter Kelly Fitzpatrick are both going to play Division I college ball next season, but those accolades alone could get them a victory over a buzz saw like St. Mary’s.

“It comes down to who shows up in that one game,” Newman said. “It’s a mental game. It’s got nothing to do anything else. Match-formatch, we were skilled today. It just came down to who got the points when it mattered.” Helping St. Anthony’s get its points in the championship game was also Fitzpatrick, who had 32 assists. Teammate and junior Danielle Vaiano also secured 15 digs. For St. Mary’s, Bailey Dolegowski served up 36 assists and 14 digs in the title match for a total of 123 assists and 38 digs on the night. Freshman Summer Slade also had 20 kills on the perfect evening, while Caitlyn Meyer—Leah’s sophomore sister—added 23 kills and junior Jessica Kranz provided 31 digs. “I couldn’t be happier,” Pieczynski said after the team took photos with their championship

plaque. “What can I say? I mean, the pressure to not lose; it was getting huge, because the vultures would be circling. Everybody wanted us to lose … but this is the hardest working team in Western New York, and you can put that in quotes.” It was also a team that only had one minor blemish in 2014—a two-set match tie with Pennsylvania’s Nazareth during a regular season tournament. “I think in the big scheme of things, it doesn’t matter,” Drzymala said of the Nazareth blip. “We learned from that lesson. I think that’s what really pushed us through the rest of the season not to drop another one.” And “it’s not frustrating because nobody’s perfect,” Pieczynski added. “There’s only one person in the world that’s perfect, and He’s up in heaven. We’re not.”

St. Mary’s, however, was as close as it gets in 2014—earning the Lady Lancers their best season record-wise in school history—and perhaps state history. “That just doesn’t happen,” Pieczynski said. “The ball’s gotta bounce your way. You gotta be good. You know, there’s a lot of things that gotta go right, so I told these kids, ‘Hold onto this memory close; hold it tight, because it don’t come around very often, man. It just don’t. “And I told (the seniors), ‘Hold close to these memories, but don’t let the memories be bigger than your dreams, because there’s a lot more that you can accomplish on the volleyball court. Reach for the stars. Dream big.’” F o r n o w, t h o u g h , Pieczynski and his No. 28-nationally-ranked Lady Lancers, according to prepvolleyball. com, don’t want to do a darned thing but enjoy the moment. “I don’t want to think about next year,” he said. “We’ll just go back to work in July or August, whenever that rolls around, but I want to celebrate this because when you’re on top it’s hard to stay there, because everybody’s aiming for ya—and we had a big bull’s-eye on our back right from the start of the season. We had to fend them off, and that’s tough to do game-in and game-out … so it was a magical season.” Last season, St. Mary’s took runner-up honors at the state tournament to St. Francis Prep of the BrooklynQueens Diocese—a team that Fontbonne Hall Academy (Brooklyn) beat to get to this season’s tourney. Fontbonne, though, went 2-2 on Sunday, while Maria Regina went 0-4.

Donations sought for Holiday Party

Vets H.E.R.D. seeks donations for its annual Holiday Cheer Party, which provides gifts for the children of recently returned or deployed veterans in need. The event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Veterans Hospital of Buffalo, during which Santa makes a surprise visit while his elves help with crafts and fun. We are seeking monetary donations as well as donations of toys, books, craft sets, games and gift cards to local malls and stores. Gifts provided serve children from infancy through age

17. Last year our generous community allowed more than 100 children to receive gifts, and we are counting on the community’s help to make the 2014 season just as bright. We also are seeking donations or sponsorships to cover the expenses of food, beverage, activities, paper goods, etc. used during the event. Vets H.E.R.D is a nonprofit organization run 100 percent by volunteers and provides hands-on services to needy, disabled and returning veterans in the Western New York area that en-

able them to live their lives the best they can after their return. All monies raised remain in this area to serve our local service men and woman and their families in need. Donations are being accepted through Nov. 30. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by the IRS (consult your tax advisor for additional information). Donation drop-offs, questions or concerns can be addressed to DonnaMarie Vaughan, special events coordinator, at 870-4488 or via email at donnamarie@vetsherd.org.

“Take a $50 bill, light it with a match and watch it burn!”

I’m serious. Go ahead and do it. What? You refuse? DO it anyway and see how it makes you feel. Painful wasn’t it? (Or were you just too chicken?) Well, guess what? Every day you run your furnace, you might as well take a $50 bill, light it with a match and watch it burn. Here’s why: That’s what your furnace is doing to you now. How do I know this? Simple. I know your furnace probably hasn’t been rejuvenated to factory fresh condition since the day it was installed. And every hour of every day it runs, it gets a little further out of adjustment, wasting slightly more gas for every unit of heat, costing more and more to operate. So, what can you do about this annoying situation? I’m glad you asked. Again, the answer is simple. Have a professional heating technician rejuvenate your furnace. To get the job done right, it will take about one and a half hours and $200 worth of labor and materials. The nice thing about a service like this is it usually

pays for itself several times over during the course of the winter... ...And if you call me for the service, not only will I have one of my top technicians do your rejuvenation for only $79, I will also guarantee your furnace won’t break down for the rest of this winter season. If it does, I WILL REFUND 100% OF YOUR MONEY. Why am I doing this for a price that’s below my total cost? Once again, it’s simple. I have just increased my capacity to handle an additional 125 new clients. And rather than lose money for the time it usually takes to attract that many clients, I thought I’d just pass that amount along to you in the form of savings and what I hope is an irresistible offer. There you have it. You can’t lose, no matter what happens. The only danger you have is waiting too long and missing out on the opportunity. Our Super-Tune Up can save you up to 33% off your utility bills! Call now for your appointment... 694-8524.
