Combating financial needs in the classroom, one school at a time By Anna Cappello COURIER INTERN

Four-hundred and eighty five. According to a recent national survey, this is the average amount of money that teachers spend on school supplies and classroom materials out of their own pockets each year. But what if there was a program that allowed school teachers to shop for supplies without paying a single cent? The good news is such a program does exist and it’s called The Teachers Desk. This organization was founded by John Mika who, after working 30 years at GM and as a substitute teacher at Williamsville Public School, was driven to help the community. He specifically wanted to give students in need tools for education. “I just saw the incredible difference between what kids in the city schools don’t have and what kids in suburbs do have” Mika said. The Teachers Desk, set up like an officesupply store, allows teachers to shop for classroom necessities like paper, pencils, glue and children’s books. Other organizational supplies such as binders and folders

This nonprofit organization could not be possible without these volunteers. are available as well for no charge. A grand total of $200,000 in free school supplies is distributed on a weekly basis. Reaching out to 84,000 students annually throughout Western New York, this ministry is more than ready to combat any financial problems in the classroom. “We have about 150 schools all the way from Salamanca to Ripley and pretty much everywhere in between” Mika said. “And we are always looking for more schools.” Any school that has 70 percent or greater

student participation in the National School Lunch Program, Mika stated, is eligible to shop at The Teachers Desk. Each teacher receives $900 on average in free supplies for their classroom. Dragonfly Studio & Salon to host Artisan Show Dragonfly Studio & Salon, located at 8290 Main St. in Williamsville, will be hosting an Artisan Show from noon to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13. Living Well offers coach training

Living Well, an interfaith and community collaborative that helps seniors, adults and teens, is offering “coach training” opportunities for anyone interested in providing emotional and spiritual support to those they provide care for, plus well-researched practical advice on multiple topics. Coaches will be trained to help friends, families and co-workers and to volunteer for organizations providing medical, emotional, spiritual and social services. In the eight-session course, Living Well Coach Training provides information on topics including stress management, coping with hospitalizations, prayer, forgiveness,

end of life concerns, aging, caregiving, abuse, bullying and more. This free program begins at 7 p.m. on Oct. 30 at Christ United Methodist Church, 350 Saratoga Rd., Amherst. Living Well sponsors ‘Caring for the Caregivers’ conference

Caregivers can learn techniques to help them experience less stress, deeper peace and better health, by attending a free Living Well conference entitled Caring for the Caregivers, to be offered on Nov. 1 in Kenmore and on Nov. 15 in Amherst. Caregiver stress is a serious concern today, with 65.7 million caregivers, or 29 percent of the U.S. adult population providing care to someone who is ill, disabled or aged (National Alliance for Caregiving). If left unchecked, caregiver stress can lead to burnout, decreased levels of health and deteriorating relationships. In a recent survey by the National Alliance for Caregiving, 67 percent of caregivers said they do not go to the doctor because they put their family’s needs first, or they put their care recipient’s needs over their own. More than half (51 percent) said they do not have time to take care of themselves and almost half (49 percent) said they are too tired to do so. Caring for the Caregivers is a half-day confer-

ence to reduce caregiver stress, learn about local resources and meet physical, emotional, social and/ or spiritual needs by developing action plans with professionals, family and friends. The workshop includes topics such as warning signs to watch for in your loved one; what resources are available to help you and your care receiver; and how to develop a plan to monitor your needs as well as those of your care receiver. The conference will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Kenmore United Methodist Church, 32 Landers Rd., Kenmore; and again from 1-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 at Amherst Center for Senior Services, 370 John James Audubon Pkwy., Amherst. Sweet Home takes Class A North title in win over Willamsville South By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER

The Sweet Home Panthers clinched the Class A North division title on Saturday by defeating the Williamsville South Billies at Robert P. Barczak Stadium by a score of 42-13. It was a decisive win from start to finish for the Panthers, who won their 11th straight division title and never allowed the Billies to turn the contest into a competitive game. “I think we really played our most complete game of the year today,” Panthers coach John Faller said. “We were in great position to make plays all day long, and everyone contributed to the win. Throughout the week, we called this ‘C’ Saturday, or ‘Championship’ Saturday, and the kids all bought into it.” From the Billies’ perspective, the team’s efforts weren’t up to snuff, according to head coach Kraig Kurzanski. “We stunk. No other way to say it,” a frustrated Kurzanski said. “I’ll give (Sweet Home) credit, they’re a heck of a football team, they’re coached really well and they kicked our butts. We turned the ball over and dropped some key passes, and you can’t do that stuff.” The Panthers started the game by stripping running back Jeremy Spitzberg of the ball and recovering it. They then used formations with two tight ends — a rarity for Sweet Home,

which didn’t have any tight ends listed on its roster — to drive the ball down the field and score first on a 3-yard touchdown run by Jordan Evert. “(The formations with the tight ends) were something different that we put into our game plan throughout the week,” Faller said. “I think that kept them off balance a little bit and it helped a lot by using the middle of the field and keeping more guys on the line for pass protection. We ended up executing pretty well out of it today.” On the Panthers’ next offensive drive, Billies’ defensive back Sam Castronova nearly int e r c e p t e d To r i l l o , b u t the ball bounced off his hands and into the arms of Milton Zeigler, giving the Panthers a crucial first down. Jordan Heine then made the score 14-0 on a 26-yard run. Castronova made up for his gaffe with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Justin Moon, but Evert answered right back with another touchdown run. Brandon Smiley increased the lead to 28-7 on a 19-yard run, and added two more scores on a six-yard run and a 37-yard pass reception from Torillo, respectively. Zeigler later added another score on a six-yard run of his own. Josh Shamenda scored later for the Billies on a 30-yard run, but it was too little, too late for Williamsville South. The Billies could have put up more points, but

game,” Faller said. “I told Brandon, ‘Don’t let him catch the ball’, and he didn’t. That must have been frustrating for (Williamsville South) because they’re used to getting some big plays from him. Brandon did an excellent job of taking (Foster) out

of the passing game.” Smiley said the key to shutting down Foster was by playing tight man coverage against him for four quarters. “I think a lot of teams have tried to play zone coverage against (Foster), and he’s had success

against that,” Smiley said. “I don’t think he saw a whole lot of man-press coverage against him all year, and our coaches just harped on us all week long to be physical against their receivers. I think we were pretty successful against them by doing that.”

The Amherst girls soccer teamdefeatedStarpoint onTuesday afternoon in their SectionVI playoff matchup, 4-1. The win, which enabled the Tigers to move on in postseason play, was one that was deserved because of the hard work put into it, according to coach JoAnna Fildes. “I think we came out strong right from the opening whistle and never really let up,” Fildes said. “It was just one of those games where we established ourselves right from the get-go and worked hard throughout. We really deserved to get the ‘W’ today.” It was the team’s third victory over Starpoint this season, and

the Tigers had a plan of attack for the Spartans all season long — namely coming out of the gates strong and not letting their opponent get going, which helped Amherst outscore the Spartans by a combined total of 9-3 in 2014. “It’s hard to beat anyone three times in one season. Starpoint’s a very good soccer team,” Fildes said. “If you let them get into a rhythm early, they can beat you. That’s why it was so important for us to be able to have a good start today, and for the other two times we played them.” The scoring began early in the first half, when sophomore Abby DeCicco scored off of a corner kick to take the lead. DeCicco scored again a short while later in the first half on another corner kick to make the score 2-0. Corner kicks are an area of

importance to theTigers, and the team’s work in said area paid off on Tuesday, according to Fildes. “We’ve worked so much on corner kicks that to us, whenever that type of situation comes up in a game, we relish that opportunity to convert on one,” Fildes said. “They’ve almost become go-to plays for us, and we love it when we get one.” DeCicco agreed. “We’ve spent so much time on corner kicks that they’ve almost become second-nature to us,” DeCicco said. “They’re fun to do in games, and that’s because we’ve almost perfected how to do them. Today was a perfect example of the work we’ve put into them.” Abby’s younger sister, Quinn, added a goal of her own in the middle of the second half and Abby completed a hat trick shortly thereafter with a kick

into the top right corner. Starpoint was able to get on the board with less than five minutes remaining, but it wasn’t enough to threaten the Tigers. The undefeated Pioneer Panthers will be the Tigers’ next opponent Oct. 23, and despitetheirunblemishedrecord (15-0-2), the Tigers will not be intimidated heading into the playoff matchup between the two schools. That’s because, even though the Tigers lost 3-1 in the last meeting between the two teams, they also represented one of the two teams who gave the Panthers their only ties of the season. “I love the fact that we’ll be playing them again,” Fildes said. “I think we know what we need to do in order to beat those guys this time. We’ll be ready for them. If we play like we played today, I think we’ll be fine.”

Offensive line play pivotal to success of area teams By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER

Throughout all levels of football, the conventional wisdom is that without a good quarterback, a team won’t have a chance to win. However, what also cannot be denied is this: without a sturdy and smart offensive line in front of the passer, that quarterback will have no chance of surviving. Furthermore, if a team doesn’t have a tough and balanced line, it’s likely that a running game would also cease to exist. It’s a sentiment shared between teams in Class AA North (Williamsville North), Class A North (Sweet Home, Williamsville South and Wil-

liamsville East) and Class B North (Amherst) – if you don’t possess a good offensive line, you won’t win. “We’re a pass-first team. There’s no denying that,” Billies head coach Kraig Kurzanski said. “We’ve got a lot of very good skill players as well. But there’s no way that our offense would be able to execute without guys on our line like Jake Fuzak and others. It’s very critical to be good up front on the line.” Flames coach Chris McDuffie agreed, saying that his team’s road back to respectability started by building a foundation of toughness, and that toughness would be evident in the play of his offensive line. “It all starts up front with our offensive and defensive lines,” McDuffie said. “Those guys do the dirty work for football

teams and they probably don’t get the recognition that they deserve sometimes. But you win and lose football games in the trenches, and building up the play on your lines is a great way to build team toughness.” Perhaps, then, it should be no coincidence that all five teams feature offensive linemen that are considered studs at the high school level. Names like Fuzak, Chris Tideswell, George Attea, Bryan Fowler andAustin Wilson litter each team’s roster, and they all have played major roles in each team’s success this season. Another reason to have a strong offensive line is because of Buffalo’s climate. With the threat of snow and other inclement weather always a possibility, each team knows that having the ability to run the ball behind a

tough starting five is essential. “In Buffalo, you have to be able to punch other teams in the mouth by running the ball when the weather gets cold and it becomes hard to do well in the passing game,” Kurzanski said. “It’s almost a necessity in our region.” Tigers coach Jason Beckman said that type of weather had a major impact on his offensive philosophy, and it helped shape the type of coach that he is today. “I’ve always been a guy who likes to run the football,” Beckman said. “When the going gets tough, and the weather gets bad, I’ve always felt like you have to be able to run it. I’m a fan of it, and I think that, by switching our offensive system from a spread to more of a triple-option and power-running team this year, we’ll be able take advantage

of the talent that we have on our line.” When it comes to the type of offensive lineman that teams look for, there isn’t one model to base one off of. Depending on the talent that teams have to work with, they may look to use big, powerful linemen, or smaller, more athletic linemen. Panthers head coach John Faller and offensive line coach Mike Faulks were among those that believed that size isn’t the end-all, be-all factor when it comes to putting together a solid starting five. “Our line has some size, but not a whole lot, and yet they’ve still done a good job for us,” Faller said. “Sometimes when you have smaller linemen, they can fire off the line of scrimmage and get to their blocks quicker. It can actually be an advantage

sometimes to be smaller.” “A lot of teams that we go against are bigger than us,” Faulks concurred. “We usually try to make up for that with good technique, because we’re not going to be able to over-power everyone. It’s become more about blocking zones and areas rather than matching up man-toman, and it’s worked for us.” Going forward, each team will rely on their offensive line’s prowess more and more to advance through the playoffs and to potentially win championships. “Our line is so critical to what we do offensively,” Spartans coach Mike Mammoliti said. “They set the tone for everyone else, and as long as our guys up front do their jobs, I think we can do a lot of damage this postseason.”
