CPOWNY and Buffalo Zoo pair up to welcome giraffe calf By Lizz Schumer THE SUN EDITOR

There is a new face at The Buffalo Zoo, and Community Papers of WNY Inc. is partnering with the Zoo to welcome its first Zooborn baby in some time: A baby giraffe. The male calf arrived in the middle of the night on Oct. 24, to first-time parents A.J, 5, and Moke, 3. Community Papers of WNY has planned a year of events and promotions, in conjunction with the Zoo, to welcome the newest addition to Western New York. A formal press release will be released by the Zoo and CPOWNY on Dec. 15, announcing the still-anonymous baby’s name, as well

as the reasoning behind its new moniker. The newspaper group and the Zoo are working together to host a series of events and contests, to coincide with the calf’s first year of life, and CPOWNY readers will be the first to know, and participate in, these promotions. Baby giraffes tend to remain with their parents until they are around about 22 months old, so the organization has plenty of time to spend with the new little one. Special events will include a coloring contest, in which children in grades K-4 color a drawing of the baby giraffe and mother from a drawing template included in all community papers. A winner will

be selected from each of CPOWNY’s 25 community newspapers by random drawing and each winner will receive a family pass for the Buffalo Zoo; two parents and two children. Next will be a contest for winning a named, baby giraffe plush animal, for sharp-eyed readers. A series of eight billboards by Lamar of Buffalo are located throughout the Buffalo metropolitan area that feature the photo and name of the new Buffalo Zoo baby giraffe. The first family from each of the 25 community papers to correctly submit all eight route and cross-street billboard locations will receive the collectible baby giraffe. Outdoor billboards will be

According to CPOWNY Director of Marketing Dr. Janet Gane, the baby giraffe’s arrival will be heralded by a year-long calendar of events, distributed by the 25 papers, as well as WNY Health Magazine, with a article focused on conservation and preservation of the animals’ natural habitats. “There’s a real concern about poaching of giraffes, and other animals are also in danger,” Gane explained, “So, we want to make sure our readers are aware of that, as well as the first to know about this precious little one.”

ECC’s Dental Lab Tech Program earns grant

Erie Community College’s Dental Lab Technology Program has been selected as a recipient for a $5,000 Foundation for Dental Lab Technology’s Keystone Grant, announced in November by the foundation’s Tallahassee, Fla.-located representatives. The prestigious Keystone Grant was established to support educational institutions with dental laboratory technology programs. The annual and competitive grant selection process awards national recipients based on submitted materials that include a program outline, current efforts being made to strengthen the program and planned usage of the funds. For ECC—a school that also boasts competitive programs in dental assisting and dental hygiene, and consistently posts impressive job placement numbers across Western New York—the award will certainly strengthen an already solid dental focus.

“This award is appreciated, and further recognition of the great work done by our faculty,” ECC President Jack Quinn said. “Their number one goal is to train our students for sustainable careers, and this grant will certainly help those in dental lab tech do so.” ECC’s Dental Laboratory Technology Program trains students to be capable of the design, fabrication and production of dental prostheses, including full and partial dentures, crowns, bridges and orthodontic appliances. New state-of-the-art techniques, equipment and materials are emphasized, and within well-equipped laboratories at the ECC South Campus, students are instructed in all aspects of prosthodontic dentistry. Opportunities are available for second-year students to work with dentists in private practice, at hospitals and at commercial dental laboratories as they prepare to join the profession.

ECC makes it six straight at national Mastercam competition For the past five years, students of Erie Community College’s celebrated industrial technology program have enjoyed fall seasons full of awards on the national stage of Mastercam’s Wildest Parts design competition. This year, they continued what has now become an annual tradition of industrial design domination. In a field open to students from over 74,800 schools around the country, ECC’s Michael Manzella notched second place and Paul Gojmerac added third place honors as the college’s participants once again mastered the decades-old contest’s postsecondary division. This is the sixth year in a row that an ECC student has been awarded either first, second or third place in the event, which challenges students enrolled in Mastercam courses to create a unique, original design using Mastercam software. Williamsville native Manzella earned his honor for “Reel,” a large and complicated titanium fly reel which featured expert milling, tight tolerances and an impressive attention to detail. Kenmore resident Gojmerac’s waterjet-created “Sextant” not

only combined artistic and utilitarian qualities sought after by contest judges, but also exhibited an impressive level of ambition from the ECC student. According to Mastercam judges, “(Gojmerac) gained a much better understanding of the process of taking a concept through all of the steps necessary to become a finished product. The end result was a great learning experience and an attractive and functional part.” This victory is simply the latest victory for an ECC Industrial Technology Program that is leading the way in Western New York advanced manufacturing by providing trained graduates to answer the region’s dire need for skilled laborers, manufacturers and technicians. Its enrollment has surged over the past nine years and, thanks in part to the college’s $926,922 received through the U.S. Department of Labor’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grants Program (TAACCCT) in 2012, is now utilizing state-of-the-art training labs and advanced equipment for students eager to enter the area’s expanding industry.

Local students given opportunity to study abroad “Qualified high school students are offered a unique opportunity to spend an academic year, three-month program or summer holiday in Europe, Asia, North and South America, New Zealand, Australia or South Africa as part of the ASSE International Student Exchange Program,” announced Leanne Bell, eastern director of ASSE. “Until a few years ago only a fortunate few could afford to spend a school year or summer abroad. ASSE has changed all of that,” Bell continued. Students 15 to 18 years of age qualify on the basis of academic performance, character references and a genuine desire to experience abroad with a volunteer host family in one of the many ASSE host countries. “ASSE families abroad are carefully screened to provide a caring environment in which students can learn the language and culture of their host country,” Bell explained. Summer exchange students live with a family abroad who might speak some English. Year and shorter-term three-month

program students need not have learned a foreign language as they receive language and cultural instruction as part of the ASSE program. ASSE students attend regular high school classes along with their new teenage friends. “ASSE exchange students learn by living the language and culture of their new host country,” Bell added. The ASSE International Student Exchange Programs was founded by the Swedish National Department of Education and cooperates with the Canadian Provincial Ministries of Education and the New Zealand Ministry of Education. ASSE also provides international opportunities for American families to host students from Europe, the Republics of the former Soviet Union (in the U.S.A.), South America, Asia, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. These select students are 15 to 18 years old and will attend the local high school for a semester or an academic year. Dunkin Donuts launches partnership with Toys for Tots Dunkin’ Donuts today announced its partnership with one of America’s most iconic holiday toy collection drives through a third-year initiative with the United States Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program in Western New York. Store your mower in eight easy steps (NAPSI)—Chances are, your lawn mower has been a faithful fair-weather companion. So at the end of the mowing season, you want to give it the attention it deserves. Here are some tips on what you can do now to be sure your mower will start easily next mowing season. • Make sure your operator’s manual is on hand for quick reference whenever you work on your mower or any such equipment. • Remove the spark plug lead wire from the plug before doing any mower maintenance, and tape or tie it out of the way. • Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place away from gas cans, the water heater or furnace. • Change the oil. Old oil has lost much of its ability to coat and protect engine components, which could lead to damage down the road. Most people avoid

changing the oil in their lawn mower because they think about having to tip the mower over to drain the old oil. They worry about spills in the driveway and a mess of rags and cardboard to catch spills. Oil removal kits make the process easier and a lot less messy. For example, the Briggs & Stratton 1.6-liter oil extractor pump has a longreach hose so oil can be extracted through filler or dipstick holes. It is important to return and recycle used oil at the proper collection center in your community. • Clean your mower. Brush or hose off leaves, grass and mud. Gently tip your walk-behind mower on its side to spray the underbody. If debris is caught on the blade, use a stick or tool to remove it—never use your hands. • Use a fuel stabilizer. Never store your lawn equipment with a partially

full fuel tank. Either run the equipment out of fuel or use fuel stabilizer in a full tank of fuel. Add Advanced Formula Fuel Treatment and Stabilizer according to the package directions. Then—and this is important—run the mower for a few minutes so the stabilizer circulates through the carburetor. The stabilizer keeps fuel fresh for up to six months. Turn off the engine and completely fill the gas tank. A full tank will help prevent moisture from condensing in the tank, which can form rust that could break away and clog the carburetor. • Store your mower in a dry, protected place such as your garage or a garden shed. Never store it next to a furnace, water heater or appliance with a pilot light.

2014-15 Basketball Preview Amherst boys, girls aim for more playoff success Playoff loss to Cheektowaga on boys’ mind Lady Tigers look to By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER

Having a record of 17-4 and a playoff appearance at Buffalo State might be enough to satisfy most high school basketball teams. Not Amherst. That’s because a onepoint sectional playoff loss to Cheektowaga left a sour taste in the Tigers’ mouths, and because of that, the team has come into their early-season practices with a fire in their bellies and a determination to top last year’s results. “We had a pretty good year last year, but losing to Cheektowaga hurt,” head coach Chris Kensy said. “We had a real good offseason, and if we continue to work as hard this

season as we did during the offseason and play unselfish basketball, I think we’ll have the potential to go even further.” Fortunately for the Tigers, the team won’t have to replace many players off of last year’s team. Just four players from 2013-14 are no longer with the Tigers, and because of the team’s depth, Hensy is confident that the veterans he has returning will make the transition from last year to this year go smoothly. “We started three sophomores and two juniors last year, so we’ve got quite a few guys coming back who not only know our system, but also know what it takes to win,” Hensy said. “Some of the guys we’re going to look at to provide production for us will be Dorian

fered a knee injury last season and missed most of the Panthers’ campaign. Then, at the start of practices last month, she injured the same knee for the second straight year. Being without Odom, and her sister Valerie (since graduated), the Panthers could have used their absences as excuses for a down season. But they won’t. “Lexi would have been critical to our team and would have made a big difference on the court,” head coach Yvette Green said. “More than anything, I think we lost more

leadership than talent. The Odoms were both talented, but they provided so much leadership through their work ethic that it’s going to be tough to replace that. “But we’re going to have to make do with the hand we’ve been dealt. We’re going to need our guards (Amanda Gentzke, Alissa Verges and Danielle “Nelly” Brandt) to step up this year and play well. Coming off of a 15-5 season that saw the team lose to Clarence in the sectional playoffs at Buffalo State, the Williamsville North Spartans have high expectations entering the 2014-15 season. Unfortunately, roster turnover is an expected rite of passage in high school sports, and this season will be no different. The Spartans, whose roster is heavy on returning veterans from teams past, will attempt to

replace two of their best players – guard Sterling Taplin and forward Kolbe Hughes – from within. “Those two were among the best players I’ve ever had,” head coach Chuck Swierski said. “Taplin was an excellent all-around player, and Hughes was one heck of an athlete. He was a pretty good rebounder and was a great defensive presence. They’ll both be missed tremendously, no doubt about it. “But we’ve got some great players who are ready to step into their shoes. Lambert is a scorer-slasher type and (guard) Maceo Jack is a very athletic guy who is versatile. I don’t have any doubts about their ability to lead our team.” Swierski said that the Spartans’ ability to step up and perform during times of adversity will be the determining factor of how far the team will go. “If we’re down by a few points, I’d like to see if we’re the type of team who can make plays in crunch time,” Swierski said. “If we have that ability to come back when we’re down and never give up, then I think we can have a special season.”

The Williamsville North Lady Spartans have high hopes for this upcoming season, and for good reason. The Spartans may have ended last season with a record of just 11-9, but a surprising playoff run that ended with a loss to Jamestown at Buffalo State has raised the bar for a team that will start 2014-15 with its roster mostly intact.

Having lost eight seniors to graduation, one could be forgiven if they looked at Williamsville East’s roster and thought that the Flames would have a difficult time repeating last year’s success. Not so, according to head coach Chris Durr. Despite the losses, the Flames have promoted from within and

are reaping the benefits of their depth in their quest to get back to the sectional final at Buffalo State. “I think we’re a lot further along in our development now than where I thought we would be,” Durr said. “This is a young team, and we’ve got a lot of talent in our pipeline. I’m confident that we can get back to the level that we were at last year.” Some areas of the team that could use some improvements going forward for the Flames include their rebounding and their offensive sets. The players who will execute those parts of the game – including fresh-

man guard Erica Martinsen, junior forward Carly Shifflet, senior forward Erin Jozwiak, senior center Alex Sommer and senior forward/ guard Tori Thuman – don’t have a size advantage on most teams, but they can make up for a lack of size with determination and smarts. “It’s early in the year, and I think our timing and chemistry on offensive sets will improve as the season goes on,” Durr said. “As far as rebounding goes, we’re not the biggest of teams, but as long as we out-work everyone else and play smarter than everyone else, good things should follow.”

“We have some pretty lofty goals around here, and some of them are to win our league and a sectional title,” head coach Bill Shaw said. “It only makes sense to aim high in whatever sport you compete in, and the good news for us is that we have a lot of girls coming back who know our system. The more familiarity you have with each other, the more it should help you.” Having lost just one senior to graduation – guard Katie Wolfe – Shaw will be counting on returning captains Clare

Ahern and Anne Principe and a solid core of players to be able to replace the former captain’s leadership and talent. “Losing Wolfe is going to hurt, for sure,” Shaw said. “She was a great leader for us, and that’s why she was one of our captains. But we’ve got a lot of players who are very good who can step up. Principe is a good outside shooter, Ahern’s very athletic, and Ericka Taplin can dominate games. They should all play a lot of minutes for us and contribute.”

Continuity is something that most sports teams strive to have. So when Williamsville South Billies coach Gabe Michaels looked at his roster for the 2014-15 season, he noticed that he didn’t lose many players from last year’s team. Names like senior captains Sam Castronova and Kam Varner, and juniors Matt Foster, Graham Dolan and Myles Hall will be relied upon to help lead the Billies

This will probably be the most veteran group that I’ve had here, which is exciting,” Michaels said. “In my first year here a couple of years ago, we had seven seniors, but none had played for me before. This group knows what to expect and I know them as well. But it doesn’t mean we’re going to be good. It just means that we’ll have guys who are familiar with each other and I’m optimistic because of that.” Another factor working in the Billies’ favor this year is their schedule. Last year was

a murderer’s row of sorts with games against Canisius, Olean and Batavia included with the team’s normal set of divisional matchups, and not having to go against them again had Michaels breathing a sigh of relief. “Last year, our schedule was just brutal to go against,” Michaels said. “This year, we’ll still play a tough schedule, but it’s not as grueling as last year’s was. Having our guys go through that experience last year, we should be able to apply any lessons learned from that toward this year.”
