BNHV to open exciting new Prohibition exhibit
An exciting new exhibit — Vice and Virtue: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition — is scheduled to open on April 24, 2015, at Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village in Amherst. Vice and Virtue: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition will explore how the 18th Amendment sought to bring on an age of temperance and virtue but instead resulted in an increase of excess, indulgence and vice as Americans began to test the limits of one of the most unpopular pieces of legislature in American history. Exhibit sponsors for Vice and Virtue: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition are being sought, as well as donations of items related to the Prohibition era to be put on display to supplement existing
exhibition items. These items would be considered on loan and would be on display for the three-year duration of the exhibit. In particular, BNHV is interested in photos, correspondence, permits or other documents related to Prohibition, items used to smuggle alcohol or evade authorities (hollowed canes, hip flasks, false books), newspaper articles, home distillery items, bottles, kegs, barrels and oral histories from members of the community. The deadline for participating as a sponsor or for donating items is Feb. 20, 2015. If you have any questions regarding sponsorship of this exhibit or donating artifacts or oral histories, email kshypski@bnhv.org or call 689-1440, ext. 7720.

flags of the five branches of the Armed Services; a 500-pound memorial stone, donated by ECC’s 117th Police Basic class and relocated from a nearby police recruit assembly area; and park benches and picnic tables for those looking to come pay their respects and appreciate the sacrifices of fallen heroes. To date, 15 of ECC’s alumni have been lost to direct combat in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and two others have died while still on active duty in noncombat circumstances. Many of the region’s police officers and firefighters who’ve died in the line of duty were
either ECC graduates or graduates of the college’s Law Enforcement Training Academy (LETA) as well, so the park will stand as a testament to their lives and the community they called their own. The morning started with the national anthem performed by First Niagara Center fixture Doug Allen. Morning remarks were made by ECC President Jack Quinn; ECC representatives Richard Washousky, Dan Frontera and Ed Hempling; and various attending elected officials before the names off all ECC alums lost through military, fire and police duty were read aloud.

Pistol Permit Office will close to public on Wednesdays With the goal of reducing the time it takes to get a pistol permit in Erie County, County Clerk Chris Jacobs announced that beginning Dec. 3, the Pistol Permit Office will be closed to the public on Wednesdays to process new applications. This initiative comes just after Jacobs and his team completed a comprehensive “Re-engineering” analysis of the Pistol Permit Department. “After the enactment of the NYSAFE Act we took in as many new pistol permit applications in the first four months as we did the entire previous year. It was unprecedented,” Jacobs said. “We needed to determine what processes we could modify to improve the overall function of this office; primarily improving the time it takes to obtain a pistol permit.”
The Re-Engineering Project led by Karen Kirbis, a loaned executive from Audubon Machinery, identified several system enhancements that optimized resources currently available. It also identified that with current staffing levels, it is not possible to handle the necessary back office operations involved in processing a new pistol permit application, while also servicing over 100 customers a day. “Our sole function on Wednesdays will be to process pistol permit applications and to get the files ready to send to the judge for approval,” stated Will Fowler, supervisor of the Pistol Permit Department. “Our time will be spent working on new pistol permit applications, preparing files to go to police agencies for back-
ground checks and updating current permit holder information in our system. Activities that cannot currently be done efficiently when trying to take care of the volume of customers we assist on a daily basis.” Since the passage of the NYSAFE Act it has taken between 12-15 months to obtain a pistol permit in Erie County. “Our goal with the new office hours is to cut the time it takes to obtain a permit by 50 percent,” Fowler said. “We believe that by making this small change in our hours, the end result will be a benefit to the many Erie County residents interested in obtaining a pistol permit,” Jacobs stated. The hours for the Pistol Permit Department on the other days of the week will remain 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Be prepared and stay safe during winter driving months
Every start to the winter season, you promise yourself that this year will be different, that you’ll be ready for whatever blizzard Mother Nature sends us. We all know that winter driving can be a test for even expert drivers and you need to be prepared at all times. Before the storm hits, take a moment to review a few simple winter driving tips and double-check that you have the proper emergency gear in your vehicle to ensure your safety. Not all drivers are prepared for winter driving conditions, so take it slow when driving on snowy or icy roadways. Drive as the environment warrants, stay alert and reduce your speed. Due to poor visibility and/ or bad road conditions, always leave plenty of room between cars. Brake early and slowly giving yourself time to stop and react safely. Keep a full tank of gas along with gas in your ve-
hicle at all times. Before pulling onto the road, be sure to completely clear snow and ice from your car windows, mirrors, lights, hood and roof. Don’t use cruise control in inclement weather as the slightest touch of your brakes to deactivate can cause loss of vehicle control. Take extra precaution when entering and exiting ramps and bridges as they can be extremely slippery. While four-wheel drive vehicles may help you get going quicker, they won’t help you stop any quicker – don’t get overconfident when driving one. Make sure your car is properly maintained – the better shape your car is in, the safer you are on the road. Have your battery and ignition system checked, along with your brakes, transmission and tires. All fluids in your vehicle should be checked and topped off: de-icing washer fluid, oil, power steering
and anti-freeze. Change or adjust spark plugs, air, fuel and emission filters. Check your headlights, brake and taillights, blinkers and emergency flashers. If you ever get stuck in the winter season, be prepared by keeping these emergency items handy in your vehicle: a spare tire, wheel wrench, jack, shovel, jumper cables, tow and tire chains, salt or cat litter, working flashlight with extra batteries, bright cloth, first aid kit, ice scraper and snow brush. Extra clothing such as gloves, socks and hats, a blanket, a 12-volt charger for a cell phone, as well as non-perishable foods and bottles of water or juice are vital should you become stranded. Being prepared is the best offense against winter driving. Take it slow, be safe and buckle up. Additional safe driving tips can be found on the Erie County Clerk’s website www. erie.gov/clerk.

Brogan was among other award winners recognized at the Western New York Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals event to celebrate donors, volunteers, foundations, leaders, corporations, and others engaged in philanthropy in the local community. “We nominated Dr. Brogan for this award because he is the epitome of the spirit of Daemen College,” said Dr. Richanne C. Local students given opportunity to study abroad “Qualified high school students are offered a unique opportunity to spend an academic year, three-month program or summer holiday in Europe, Asia, North and South America, New Zealand, Australia or South Africa as part of the ASSE International Student Exchange Program,” announced Leanne Bell, eastern director of ASSE. “Until a few years ago only a fortunate few could afford to spend a school year or summer abroad. ASSE has changed all of that,” Bell continued. Students 15 to 18 years of age qualify on the basis of academic performance, character references and a genuine desire to experience abroad with a volunteer host family in one of the many ASSE host countries. “ASSE families abroad
are carefully screened to provide a caring environment in which students can learn the language and culture of their host country,” Bell explained. Summer exchange students live with a family abroad who might speak some English. Year and shorter-term three-month program students need not have learned a foreign language as they receive language and cultural instruction as part of the ASSE program. ASSE students attend regular high school classes along with their new teenage friends. “ASSE exchange students learn by living the language and culture of their new host country,” Bell added. The ASSE International Student Exchange Programs was founded by the Swedish National Department of Education and
cooperates with the Canadian Provincial Ministries of Education and the New Zealand Ministry of Education. ASSE also provides international opportunities for American families to host students from Europe, the Republics of the former Soviet Union (in the U.S.A.), South America, Asia, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. These select students are 15 to 18 years old and will attend the local high school for a semester or an academic year. Students or families interested in more information about the ASSE programs should call 1-800-677-2773 or visit ASSE’s website at www. asse.com.

The Monsignor Martin girls hockey team has seen plenty of success on the ice and many of the big names are back. But past success doesn’t guarantee future playing time. With a deep roster, MMAA players know they have to earn each minute and they’re eager to do so. “I have a group of kids that work hard,” coach Linda Mroz said “Nobody feels entitled to PT. Doesn’t matter if you’re a senior or a freshman, every game and every practice is a tryout, no lineup is set.” Monsignor Martin has a ton of returning talent and leadership. Senior defender Amelia Gajewski (Sacred Heart Academy) is the team captain. She’s back to lead the

Catherine Radwan (Mount Mercy) will serve as alternate captain in her junior season and again be all over the ice for MMAA. Her coach described Radwan as “a bull in a China shop.” “She’s just one of those kids that gives you 110 percent
every time,” Mroz said. “I can count on her to do play penalty kill, power play, anything. If I tell her, ‘I need your fanny in front of the net, that’s where she’ll be.’” Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Sacred Heart) led the league in goals as a freshman and is expected to do even more as a sophomore. With the talented
Rachel Lenard lost to graduation, Drew-Mead will be a target this season. “We’ve adjusted her role,” Mroz said. “I told her, ‘You need to step up and she said ‘I’m ready for the challenge, coach. I’m glad you put me here.’” The team also welcomes back junior Brynn Wopperer (Sacred Heart), who scored a goal in her first game this season after missing last year. Also on defense, junior Maeve Christ (Mount St. Mary) is one of the top offensive defenseman in Western New York. Kayla Blos (Sacred Heart) is also looking strong as a freshman as a forward. In goal, Monsignor Martin welcomes back Brianna Gawronski (Mount Mercy) and Makenna Walp (Sacred Heart) and MMAA also has a third goaltender in Julianna

2013-14 RECORD: 4-12
Billies puck banking on experience, maturity to guide them to better year By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER
The Williamsville South Billies didn’t have much success on the ice last season, but that won’t put a damper on the team’s hopes heading into the 2014-15 campaign. That is due to the team having gained a lot of experience over the last few years and relying on said experience to grow and
mature on the ice. The Billies only lost two seniors to graduation – leading scorer Adam Herr and Jacob Fix – and with most of the roster back intact, the Billies’ coaches expect that team chemistry will improve this year. “We’ve got a bit of a younger squad and not much size this year, but we shouldn’t use that as an excuse,” assistant coach Scott Horton said. “We’re going to revert to having
more of a travel hockey mentality, but that should be a fun way to go through the season and hopefully it will translate into more wins.” The Billies will be relying on players such as senior defensemen Andrew Laudico and Luke Rehbaum and senior forwards Dan Brodzik and Mason Cool, to provide most of the team’s production offensively and defensively. In goal
Kersten (Sacred Heart). All three girls are sophomores. MMA’s roster consist of nine players from Mount Mercy, eight from Sacred Heat, two from Nardin and one apiece from Mount St. Mary and Niagara Catholic. But, while they may compete in other venues, they’re friends when they step on the ice. “Mount St. Mary and Sacred Heart have a huge rivalry,” Mroz said “But I tell the girls, you’re no longer Mount and you are no longer Sacred Heart, you’re Monsignor Martin. There are no issues. They’re not playing for Caz, not playing for the Regals, not playing for the Stars, or Sacred Heart or Mount or Nardin. We’re all playing together for Monsignor Martin and the girls have been great about it.”
will be a host of players vying for playing time – including Adam Tucker, Caleb Hannon, Michael Woods, Sean Brown and Cam Carney. “We have a lot of depth at goaltender,” Horton said. “No one sticks out more than the other, so any one of them could win games for us on any given night. We’ve got a lot of confidence that they can do the job for us and do it well.”
COACH’S OUTLOOK: “Last year we gave up a lot of goals. I think a combination of good play in our defensive zone, good goaltending and hard work will make a big difference for us and make us more competitive.” — Assistant coach Scott Horton.
