Manna enjoying her time at West Point Will-South grad becomes member of the Long Gray Line By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR

There are times you just forget. You forget they are only kids. Kids that have made a life changing decision. They look invincible in their dress uniforms. They look like they can change the world. That nothing can hurt them. But, remember, they are just like you and I. The only difference is they are going to be serving our country in just a couple of years, helping to protect the freedom that many of us enjoy. But, at the end of the day, they are college students. “We get personified as these invincible, tough human beings,” stated West Point Firstie Maria Manna. “But, none of us are like that. We all love being ourselves and doing things like shopping and playing sports. What normal people like to do.” For Williamsville South High School graduate Maria Manna she grew up not knowing much about the military life. She didn’t come from a military family. So, when the United States Military Academy at West Point came to St. Gregory the Great one day she was hooked. Maybe it was the awe of the dress gray uniforms the Cadets were wearing that day. Maybe it was the sense

Pictured from the United States Military Academy West Point, left to right, are: Devin Long (Georgia), Maria Manna (Williamsville), Andrew Mohr (Williamsville). of pride she had watching them sing for everybody. Whatever the case was, Manna knew she wanted to follow the path of the military. She wanted to get an Ivy League education, while serving her country in the process. “West Point Catholic Choir came to my church [St. Gregory the Great] when I was in sixth grade.

Before that I had never heard of West Point,” explained Manna. “When they came they looked very impressive in their uniforms and I was able to talk with them afterward. I just had that vision of being a Cadet. With my personality, I was a natural fit.” But, like most young men and women who attend one of the three acad-

emies, the reality of academy life hits you straight in the face. Becoming a member of the prestigious Long Gray Line isn’t easy. It isn’t handed to you on a silver platter. You need to work for it. You need to be committed to the cause. Committed to the military lifestyle and training, while still going to class and participat-

ing in other activities, like sports and Glee Club. “We take certain classes at West Point, like survival swimming,” stated Manna. “This is where you learn to swim with your gear. It is very difficult being 130-pounds and carrying 45-pounds of gear in the water, while trying not to drown. The nickname for the class is Cow [Junior

year] drowning. The standards in this class are the same for men and women.” Manna is a singer. She sings at West Point and has been able to travel around the United States to perform. Not many people can say they have been able to perform in front of thousands of people at Yankee Stadium, but she can. “Being in Glee Club freshman year I was able to leave almost every weekend,” said Manna. I traveled to Kentucky and was able to sing at some military balls. Members of the club were also invited to perform at some major sporting events. The Houston Texans and New York Rangers invited members of the Glee Club down to sing the national anthem. So, that was really exiting - because it’s kind of a get out of jail free card. You get to hang out with your friends outside of school, which is something that you normally can’t do your freshman year.” Four years have flown by for Manna since she was that wide-eyed Plebe (Freshman) from Williamsville. Because of some bumps and bruises she sustained during training, Manna is due to graduate from the academy in December of 2015.

West Point • from front By the end of their sophomore year, Cadets reevaluate why they came to West Point in the first place. For Manna, she knew she wanted to be there. She knew why she took the path to being a graduate of West Point and part of the storied history of the Long Gray Line. “I would say probably 85-percent of people consider leaving at some point,” stated Manna. “If you ask most Cadets, ‘Why did you go to West Point?’ It’s much different than ‘Why did you stay at West Point?’ I evaluated whether I should stay and chose to stay. And, I think that was the right decision.” Graduation will bring on an entirely new set of challenges for Manna, but one she embraces. She is looking forward to seeing what life has in store for her during her five-year tour of duty. “I received my branch already and I will be an Air Defense Artillery Officer” she explained. “It will be exciting to finally be on my own and explore what the Army has to offer.” “I injured myself a few

Like every other young man or woman who attends West Point, you have until the first class of your junior year to opt out. There is no shame in leaving after your sophomore year. There is a lot of soul searching. You start asking yourself ques-

tions like, “Why did I attend the academy in the first place?” Many choose the academy in the beginning because they are in awe of the tradition and everything that comes with being a West Point Cadet.

Keep warm, keep safe (NAPSI)—As autumn approaches, many people are looking forward to a break from the summer heat. However, soon that relief may turn chilly and your reliance on heating equipment will increase. The Electrical Safety Foundation International wants you to be aware of the risks associated with heating equipment and follow a few simple steps to help reduce your risk of a home fire. According to a report by the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths, responsible for an estimated 490 in 2010. The leading factors contributing to ignition in home heating equipment fires were failure to clean the device, the heat source being too close to combustibles, and a mechanical failure or

malfunction of the equipment. With proper installation, use and maintenance, you can reduce your risk of property loss, injury or death resulting from the use of heating equipment. With the increased use of heating equipment, carbon monoxide incidents are also more frequent in colder months. Gas-fueled heating devices were the primary heating source responsible for nonfire carbon monoxide poisonings. Carbon monoxide is odorless, invisible and potentially deadly. Be sure to continue testing your carbon monoxide alarms and smoke alarms each month to help keep yourself and your loved ones safe. More Safe Heating Behaviors • All heaters need space. Keep things that can burn

at least three feet away from heating equipment. • Make sure you use only equipment that displays a label indicating it has undergone independent testing by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Intertek (ETL), or the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). • Have a qualified professional install heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions. • Make sure all fuel-burning equipment is vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Also, be sure to remove snow or fallen leaves around the outlet to the outside to ensure proper venting of exhaust. • Have your heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified professional.

Store your mower in eight easy steps (NAPSI)—Chances are, your lawn mower has been a faithful fair-weather companion. So at the end of the mowing season, you want to give it the attention it deserves. Here are some tips on what you can do now to be sure your mower will start easily next mowing season. • Make sure your operator’s manual is on hand for quick reference whenever you work on your mower or any such equipment. • Remove the spark plug lead wire from the plug before doing any mower maintenance, and tape or tie it out of the way. • Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place away from gas cans, the water heater or furnace. • Change the oil. Old oil has lost much of its ability to coat and protect engine components, which could lead to damage down the

road. Most people avoid changing the oil in their lawn mower because they think about having to tip the mower over to drain the old oil. They worry about spills in the driveway and a mess of rags and cardboard to catch spills. Oil removal kits make the process easier and a lot less messy. For example, the Briggs & Stratton 1.6-liter oil extractor pump has a longreach hose so oil can be extracted through filler or dipstick holes. It is important to return and recycle used oil at the proper collection center in your community. • Clean your mower. Brush or hose off leaves, grass and mud. Gently tip your walk-behind mower on its side to spray the underbody. If debris is caught on the blade, use a stick or tool to remove it—never use your hands. • Use a fuel stabilizer.

Never store your lawn equipment with a partially full fuel tank. Either run the equipment out of fuel or use fuel stabilizer in a full tank of fuel. Add Advanced Formula Fuel Treatment and Stabilizer according to the package directions. Then—and this is important—run the mower for a few minutes so the stabilizer circulates through the carburetor. The stabilizer keeps fuel fresh for up to six months. Turn off the engine and completely fill the gas tank. A full tank will help prevent moisture from condensing in the tank, which can form rust that could break away and clog the carburetor. • Store your mower in a dry, protected place such as your garage or a garden shed. Never store it next to a furnace, water heater or appliance with a pilot light.

Energy-savings tips for colder weather (NAPSI)—Here’s news that may warm your heartand your home. There’s now a new resource from the Eldercare Locator to help keep older adults safe and warm during the cold weather months. It’s a brochure called “Winter Warmth and Safety: Home Energy Tips for Older Adults,” and it provides tips about preparing a home for winter weather and saving money on energy expenses. Hints To Help You The brochure suggests

you: • Make sure your home is energy efficient by installing a programmable thermostat and sealing and insulating ducts. • Learn about energy assistance programs such as the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and utility no-cutoff programs. • Avoid the risk of home fires by not using your stove or oven to heat your home. • Make sure carbon monoxide detectors are installed and working prop-

erly. • Learn about Weatherization Assistance Programs (WAP). • Be sure to schedule a check-up of your heating equipment. Dirt and neglect are the No. 1 cause of heating system failure. • Insulate water pipes to avoid freezing and bursting. Be sure to drain and turn off outside waterspouts. • Identify alternative living arrangements should extreme weather conditions occur. Have a plan ready.

Local sports Sweet Home falls just short in Ken-Ton Classic By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

It was a tale of two basketball teams that have more in common than they probably even realize. Mark Taylor went 2 of 2 from the line with 32.3 seconds left in the game to help Kenmore West secure a 56-55 win over Sweet Home in the opening game of the Ken-Ton Holiday Classic that was held at Kenmore East Dec. 26-27. The win vaulted the Blue Devils into the title game against Cardinal O’Hara, but more importantly, it proved to be huge confidence booster for a talented team that has not found its rhythm as a group. “We needed this. We needed this one,” said Ken West coach Mike Meetze. “I said to them, ‘I think two weeks ago we lose this game.’ Down the stretch, we didn’t play with a lot of composure. We

played young, we had two first-year point guards on varsity. We threw the ball away a couple times, but we hit big free throws. We did enough with the ball down the stretch in the last minute and got some pretty good communication in the last play to get a 15foot runner off the glass.” Jordan Heine, who led all scorers with 18 points, set the stage for the Panthers last-gasp attempt at the hoop when he sank a bucket with 20 seconds left. Sweet Home got one final look at the basketball, as Meetze alluded to, but the Blue Devils’ defense was able to bat away the attempted buzzer beater to hang on for their second win of the year. Almost mirror images of each other, the Panthers and Blue Devils both have very athletic, skilled players. But both teams entered the Ken-Ton Classic still searching for a way to bring all of the pieces of the puzzle together. Tied 10-10 after the first quarter, the Blue Devils began to turn the tide in their favor when Trent White (13 points) hit a two-pointer and Jon Lo-

renzo went a perfect 4 of 4 from the line. Ken West took a 28-22 lead into halftime. The combination of Heine, Jordan Evert (16) and Brandon Smiley kept Sweet Home in the game and pulled it within one point, 54-53, just prior to Mark Taylor’s winning free throws. “They were huge. Huge,” Meetze said of Taylor’s frees. “He struggled early on in the game, he had six turnovers in the first three quarters, for him to come back and play with that composure down the stretch is a credit to him.” For Panthers coach Scott Martin, it was back to the drawing board to see what they could do to get better results in the weeks and months ahead. “Right now we’re clearly a work in progress,” said Martin. “We have a lot of very good athletes, kind of similar to Ken West. We just don’t have that one (pure) basketball kid to kind of get us over the top.” The Blue Devils would fall to O’Hara, 55-52, in the title game while Sweet Home beat Kenmore East in the third place game.

Stallions tie Wheatfield Blades, down Hamburg Hawks The Mite Major Clarence Stallions and Wheatfield Blades faced off on Dec. 19 at Hockey Outlet. For the Stallions, Luke Marchant (Clarence) opened the scoring with a breakaway goal. Defenseman and former

Wheatfield Blade Drew Idzik (North Tonawanda), then recorded a goal. On a partial breakaway, Miles Santa Maria (Amherst) rang a shot in off the goaltender’s left post. Liam Graham (Clarence) slid a shot into the net on

an odd-man rush to put the Stallions up 4-3 in the third. For Wheatfield, TJ Bamrick (of Amherst) contributed to all four goals, cashing in with three of his own and adding a helper. Easton Larrabee and Mat-

thew Myhalenko each assisted one of Bamrick’s goals. The Wheatfield goal that Bamrick set up was recorded by Owen Tylec, and it was Bamrick’s third goal that salvaged a tie for the Blades. •••

The Stallions defeated the Lakeview Hawks of Hamburg, 5-1, on Dec. 20, building their offense on solid defense. Stallions’ defensemen Owen McIntyre, Tucker Schoen, Maximus Henning (Clarence) and Idzik permitted

only seven shots on net. Goals for the Stallions were had by: Marchant (two), Alex Fulfaro (Amherst), Nic Zivis (Clarence) and Santa Maria. Assists were had by Cameron Stadelmaier (Wheatfield) and Santa Maria.

Back in spring 2012, Erie County’s community college students couldn’t take advantage of a New York grant program that allows volunteer firefighters to receive tuition reimbursement in exchange for first responder service. Fast forward to the days leading into 2015, when Erie Community College officials can now boast the state’s highest enrollment numbers under the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York Higher Education Learning Plan. And thanks to this increased attendance— with nearly 150 students registered as of the Fall 2014 semester—ECC can also report over $500,000 in additional student tuition due to opportunities afforded under the FASNY plan. “I am pleased to learn that a notable number of students are taking advantage of the FASNY tuition program and committing themselves to serve their volunteer fire company,” said Erie County Legislator Edward Rath, a leading proponent of the program and its benefits to county residents. “This program is a great benefit for the community, fire departments, ECC and students. I hope that we continue to see an increase in participation and applaud those who have enrolled in the program, earning a quality education while serving those in need.” The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) developed the plan as an incentive for people to serve in volunteer fire service. New York’s volunteer fire departments are currently experiencing a critical need to recruit and retain members. As an incentive for people to serve, FASNY developed the Higher Education Learning Plan (FASNY HELP). This

program provides tuition reimbursement to individuals attending community college for up to eighty (80) credit hours and, according to ECC President Jack Quinn, provides area residents yet another way to take advantage of the threecampus college’s careerfocused education. “We at ECC are very proud of the successes we’ve experienced through the FASNY program,” said Quinn. “We’re here for the community, so we’re thrilled to offer area residents yet another way to pursue affordable educational opportunities.” According to ECC FASNY Tuition Representative Tom Chmielowiec, the college has taken in approximately $534,603.41—from a combination of FASNY assistance, TAP and PEL grant monies, and student payment—since the program’s inception in fall 2012. He also reports that 204 students are currently on ECC’s roster to apply for FASNY assistance, and the college plans to welcome more applications as the successes of the program spread across the region. “ECC is very proud and honored to be part of the FASNY Program and to be able to serve our firefighters with the education needs they have,” said Chmielowiec, who reports that students are currently enrolled in 18 of ECC’s FASNY-approved programs like Criminal Justice and Nursing. Under FASNY HELP, student-volunteers are eligible to have up to 100% of their tuition reimbursed in exchange for maintaining their grades and fulfilling defined service requirements. They must also be a “member in good standing” in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies during both their

school years and service payback period. And, if they’re in good standing, they’ll be good firefighters on the job, something Steve DiPasquale—a 39year member of the North Amherst Volunteer Fire Department—notes as essential to Erie County. “It’s with great pride to know that the volunteer firemen of Erie County have embraced the program, utilized it as it was meant to be and, in the end, ECC has benefitted greatly,” said DiPasquale. “This program has been a win for all of Erie County and I would like to thank everyone that was involved from the beginning and congratulate all on a job well done.” It’s not too late for new students/recruits to take advantage of the HELP grant for the spring semester. As outlined by FASNY, students who meet the requirements, including a 4.0 GPA, are eligible for full reimbursement. Students recording a 3.03.99 GPA receive 85 percent reimbursement and a GPA between 2.02.99 earns them 75 percent reimbursement. The grant program also requires that students/volunteers meet the necessary service demands of their fire department. Interested residents can learn more about the program by contacting their local fire department. For information on the program or to simply apply, go online to www.fasny. com/index.php/resources/ fasny-help; contact ECC’s Tom Chmielowiec at chmielowiect@ecc.edu; or send e-mail to HELP@ fasny.com to the attention of John D’Alessandro, deputy volunteer programs coordinator, or call (855) 367-6933.
