WNY Fashion and Lifestyle © magazine is a showcase and window for living with style and purpose. The term, “fashion”, is used in a positive sense, a synonym for glamour, beauty, and style. Fashion is something we deal with everyday. Even people who say they don’t care what they wear, choose clothes every morning that say a lot about them and how they feel that day. Fashion is big business. More people are involved in buying, selling, and production of clothing than any other business in the world. Everyday, millions of workers design, sew, glue, dye, and transport clothing to stores. Ads on buses, billboards, and magazines give us ideas about what to wear, consciously or subconsciously. Fashion is a state of mind, a spirit, and extension of one’s self. Most of all, fashion is about celebrating the diversity and variety of the world in which we live. It allows people to try on many different roles in life and have fun. Fashion is an art! We welcome businesses and local organizations to consider advertising in WNY Health, and sharing information that contributes to our community and its diversified audience. Trending Now

With each new season, our wardrobes take shape and follow leads provided by fashion tabloids, commercials, movies, music, and what’s trending to inspire us; but that’s not to neglect the impact that choice of color has on our outfits, our mood, and even resulting on the red carpet, the night of the Oscars. The 2015 color palettes for winter/spring are filled with contrasts of bold primary colors and soft, metallic pastels. What is trending in 2015, will be bold or burnt, bright or subdued, matt or metallic…color that changes with our mood, affects and contributes to home decor and paint preferences, influences home interior makeovers, auto manufacturers’ color trends, and translates well into cosmetic color palettes. In other words, color will affect style and fashion all year long. Hats are showing with lots of airy details, and color pastels are in full color spectrum suggesting the first colors of spring. Here’s a quick study of current color palettes that translate well in all categories.

Mineral Matrix.

A combination of minerals through to metallics in classic natural and synthetic tones inspires. From the unique lustre of titanium through to colored metallics that gleam against the raw beauty of black onyx.

Weathered.

From wind swept heather, kelp green to rose hip pink and rugged rock, a winter wonderland inspires this natural-based nuance.

Prime.

According to forecasting from ISPO Textrend, the core colour palette shifts slightly sharper up the colour spectrum for the season. Black, winter sun, and alpine blue sit alongside blazing orange and fir cone brown. The core tones can be used bright for a modern application or taken down for an aged aspect. The season’s new complimenting satellite color palettes take inspiration from both natural sources and the man-made world, offering and creating a harmonious connection for the activewear sector.

Phantom.

Pastel tones take up a new look with artificial light filtering through as sepia-style and butterscotch tones inspired from the sky of Mars and powdery tints create a new modern direction through light diffraction.

10 THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW ABOUT

New York 5. Mole People

Renowned for its creativity, architecture, art and entertainment, New York is one of the most interesting places on the planet.

1. New York Taxi

The iconic New York cab is yellow as John Hertz, the founder of New York’s Yellow Cabs, had discovered that yellow is the easiest color for the eye to spot.

2. The Capital City

Did you know New York was the capital of the USA at one point? However, its appointment didn’t last long as it only held the title from 1789-1790, as it was replaced by Philadelphia and then Washington, DC.

3. Crime

New York has been synonymous with crime for many years now. Thought to be the hub of organized crime, theft and murder, it has had the lowest crime rate out of the 25 largest US cities since 2005 – making it one of the safest places to live in the country.

4. Cuckolding

It’s an actual crime to cheat on your partner in New York. True story. It’s a misdemeanor that’s punishable by up to 90 days in jail or a $500 crime.

It was thought that “mole people” were a myth, but in 1993 a book by Jennifer Toth revealed that there were men and women living in the tunnels in New York. While they have since been cleared out, it is thought that some mole people are still living underneath New Yorkers’ feet.

6. New Yorkers

New York is one of the most multicultural cities on the planet. So it probably comes as no surprise that 36% of its population are not from the USA.

7. Parrots

If you head to Brooklyn there’s a good chance you’ll spot a parrot or two. For some reason, the colorful birds have opted to live in the borough and no-one knows the reason why.

8. Whispering Gallery

There is a whispering gallery in Grand Central Terminal. If you stand in one corner you can hear a gentle whisper from someone whispering in another corner. It doesn’t matter how loud passersby are, you can still hear them.

9. Winnie the Pooh

The real Winnie the Pooh lives in New York! He lives in the Children’s Center of the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue, along with Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore and Kanga. No Christopher Robin, though.

10. Slippers

You cannot wear slippers in New York after 10pm. We have no idea why. Reference: TheListLove.com

Find Brand Name Products

STARTING AT $1 If you’re the kind of person who loves major names like Coach, SmashBox, Kate Spade and Urban Decay — and you love those names even more when you can find their products at a great price — then we’ve discovered the perfect website for you.

TOPHATTER

Tophatter is a new, super cool site that’s unlike anything you’ve ever tried. It features shopping events with incredible brand name fashion, jewelry, beauty items, electronics and more, for prices as low as $1 in some cases. But unlike Amazon, eBay or even popular flash sale sites like Gilt or HauteLook, Tophatter’s shopping experience is fast, fun, unpredictable and really exciting.

How It Works

Visit Tophatter, create an account in under 1 minute, then check out the items that will be up for sale. From there, click the “Auctions” tab to get in on the fun. Every 90 seconds a new item is up for bidding in each of Tophatter’s live auctions. If you like something that’s up for sale, click the button to place your bid. Bidding happens quickly, and you never know what great finds might pop up. But since these are A-list products, discovery becomes part of

the fun. In fact, while writing this article, we saw buyers nab Michael Kors watches and bags, Samsung phone batteries and accessories, beautiful home decor and much more — all for considerably less than the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Tophatter is also totally free. There are no hidden costs, fees or tricks involved. Just join, bid, and pay if you win an item — that’s it! You pay only for the item and shipping, if required; shipping is sometimes free, and sellers often throw in a bonus gift or free deal with your purchase. Sales run 24 hours a day, with new items appearing every couple minutes. If you’re the only bidder, it’s easy to grab a great deal. So whether you’re taking a break at work or have just put the kids to sleep, there’s always something happening. Refernece: HowLifeWorks.com © Western New York Fashion and Lifestyle|February 2015

10 Valentines

Day

FACTS TO MAKE YOUR HEART SKIP A BEAT

Whether you love or hate Valentine’s Day, there will be no avoiding the annual holiday as it is just around the corner! 1. Japan

In Japan, Valentine’s day is a day where women present with chocolate gifts to express their love and affection. A handmade chocolate is considered a sign that the man who receives it is “the one”.

2. Valentines Day Ban

Valentine’s Day is banned in Saudi Arabia, and the religious police force uphold the national annual ban. Everything associated with the day is prohibited, including chocolate, flowers, and Valentine’s Day gifts. Even the color red is banned!

3. The Origin

The Valentine’s Day origin is believed to stem from Emperor Claudius II, who didn’t want

6

men to marry during wartime. However, Bishop Valentine went against the Emperor’s orders and performed secret weddings for couples in love. As a result, the bishop was sent to prison and consequently executed. During his time in jail, he wrote an affectionate note to the jailor’s daughter and famously signed it “from your Valentine”.

6. The X

The X is synonymous with a kiss due to medieval times, as people who could not write their names would sign in front of a witness with an X, they would then kiss the X to show their sincerity.

5. Finnish Friends

Valentine’s Day in Finland is known as Ystävänpäivä, which translates to “Friends Day”. The day is therefore more about celebrating your relationship with your loved ones rather than that special someone.

© Western New York Fashion and Lifestyle|February 2015

The first box of chocolates was created for Valentine’s Day by Richard Cadbury, the founder of Cadbury’s chocolate, in the late 1800s.

9. Proposels

Approximately 220,000 wedding proposals are made each year on Valentine’s Day.

10. Verona

4. Bad Luck

It was considered bad luck to sign your name in Victorian times.

7. 1st Box of Chocolates

8. The Red Rose

We present red roses on Valentine’s Day as they were the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. The color is believed to represent strong romantic feelings.

Verona is synonymous with William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, as it provided the romantic backdrop to the tragic tale. The Italian city therefore receives around 1,000 letters every year addressed to Juliet.

How Digital Health Is TRANSFORMING PATIENT CARE

From body data to wearables and implantables, biology and technology have unquestionably intersected. and physicians. It is also important to make sure that the policies physicians must follow to utilize these tools are sensible, minimize red tape, and allow physicians to focus on what matters most — their patients.

Unifying IT

“Digital health applications make it easier for patients to track vital information like daily exercise, nutrition and sleep habits.” Perhaps Steve Jobs said it best, “I think the biggest innovations of the 21st century will be at the intersection of biology and technology. A new era is beginning.” The rapid pace of innovation in digital health is creating new opportunities for patients and physicians to be more actively engaged in their health and wellness, but only if we can reasonably connect the flood of data to a patients’ journey through the health care system. IBM says that every day, we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data — so much that 90 percent of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone. Data is increasing

exponentially in volume, velocity and variety. Opportunities to enhance patient care through digital health abound, but such data must be safely and responsibly integrated into health providers’ systems. Our organization and others are working to ensure health related data will be an asset to patients and physicians by enabling its use to actively manage chronic diseases or increase health and wellness. Legislators, technology developers and others are being looped into the effort to improve digital health tools to make them more usable, secure, and accessible for patients

To improve care through the use of health data, it will be important for that data to be available across venues such as hospitals, ambulatory care settings, laboratories, pharmacies, post-acute and long-term care settings. With ability to export data but also to properly incorporate external data from other systems

into a patient’s health record, it should fit seamlessly into the practice and not distract physicians from patients. Digital health applications make it easier for patients to track vital information like daily exercise, nutrition and sleep habits and key individuals and organizations are working to make it easier for as many physicians and patients as possible to take full advantage of the intersection of biology and technology.

10 Mind Boggling STARBUCKS FACTS

Starbucks opened their first coffee shop in Seattle back in 1971, and now serve 40 million customers per day. The coffee giant is now one of the biggest brands in the world – so why not learn a little more about them with the following 10 Starbucks facts. 6. The Secret Size

You can order a small cup size that’s not on the menu, which is known as the “kid’s size” and is just 8 ounces.

7. Average Customer

The average Starbucks customer visits the coffee shop 6 times per month. 20% of customers also grab a coffee up to 16 times per month.

8. Millions of Milk

Starbucks uses a whopping 93 million gallons of milk per year – which is enough to fill up 155 Olympic-sized swimming pools!

9. Paper Cups

1. The Original Name

Starbucks was originally supposed to be called Pequod – after the whaling ship in Moby Dick. In the end, the name was changed to Starbucks, after Pequod’s first mate.

2. Round Tables

You won’t find many square tables in Starbucks, as they mostly use round ones so solo drinkers feel less alone.

3. Two Stores Per Day

The famous coffee chain has opened an average of up to two stores per day since 1987.

4. 10 Minute Rule

Starbucks has a 10 minute rule, which means each coffee shop should be open ten minutes before the opening time and ten minutes after the closing time.

5. Caring Company

Starbucks cares about its employees, so much that they spend more on health care for their employees than they do on coffee beans each year. Health care costs Starbucks $300 million per year. However, the coffee company doesn’t pay any tax in the UK, so they don’t help out with the national health service, which their British employees receive from the government.

You thought Starbucks use a lot of milk? They use a lot more paper cups. How many? 2.3 billion per year.

10. Smiling Servers

All Starbucks baristas are required to smile at customers – and they should also attempt to connect and bond with them! They have an instruction manual called “The Green Apron” that has very specific instructions on how their baristas should greet customers. So, if you think that barista has a crush on you, we’re sorry to inform you they’re just doing their job. Reference: TheListLove.com

THE BEST Chocolatiers IN THE WORLD!

You will never regret indulging yourself with the confections produced by these premier chocolate makers. 1. Teuscher

If The Teuscher chocolate tradition began more than 70 years ago in a small town in the Swiss Alps. Dolf Teuscher scoured the world to find the finest cocoa, marzipan, fruits, nuts, and other ingredients with which to make his confectionery. After years of experimenting, he skillfully blended these ingredients into his now famous recipes. Today the Teuscher kitchens in Zurich make more than 100 varieties of chocolates using these original recipes, which have been handed down from father to son. Only the finest and most expensive natural ingredients are used, and absolutely no chemicals, additives, or pre-

servatives are added. The house specialty is a champagne truffle, a blend of fresh cream, butter, and chocolate with a champagne cream center, dusted with confectioner’s sugar.

2. Vosges Haut

Owner and chocolatier Katrina Markoff chooses every spice, flower, and chocolate that is flown into the Vosges kitchen to be transformed into fine chocolates. She learned the art of French confectionery at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. Further inspired by her global apprenticeships, infusions of rare spices and flowers are combined with premium chocolate in truffles such as Mexican vanilla bean.

3. Scharffen Berger

Specializing in dark chocolate, Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker is a premier chocolate manufacturer. It executes each step of the manufacturing process itself, all the way from bean to bar, to ensure that its finished chocolate delivers a flavor like no other. The chocolate-makers first find the finest cacao available, then carefully taste and blend beans of different origins to create a unique flavor profile. All the chocolate is made in small batches using artisanal manufacturing methods. In addition to its ready-to-eat bars, Scharffen Berger makes a variety of baking chocolates.

Jacques specializes in fresh, handcrafted chocolates. Eat them there, where cafe tables encourage you to sit, sip hot chocolate, and enjoy a freshly baked pain au chocolat — or take a selection home. Visitors often can see the chocolate goodies being prepared behind large glass windows. There are five Jacques Torres Chocolate shops in the city, plus one in Harrah’s in Atlantic City.

5. Norman Love Confections

Chocolate is my passion,” says Norman Love, who dreamed of making chocolate that was visually stunning as well as delicious. Love and a partner perfected a technique in which the colored designs for each candy are hand-painted or airbrushed into chocolate molds, which are then filled with the finest chocolate imported from Belgium, France, and Switzerland. The pumpkin white chocolate bonbon is almost too gorgeous to eat. Using only the freshest ingredients, his recipes call for pureed raspberries, bananas, ginger, caramel, passionfruit, and hazelnuts, to name a few.

6. Valrhona

Valrhona has been creating exceptional gourmet chocolate since 1922, with cocoa beans purchased directly from premier plantations in South America, the Caribbean, and Pacific regions. The chocolate, made in the French style, comes in a variety of bars. Valrhona was one of the first chocolatiers to describe its chocolate like wine, labeling creations as grand cru, single origins, single estate, and vintage chocolate from bean to bar. In 2008, it introduced spicy, salty Xocopili.

7. Godiva Chocolatier

The beginning of Godiva traces back to a 1920s chocolate and sweet-making workshop owned and operated by the Draps family in Brussels, Belgium. Their “pralines,” typical Belgian filled chocolates, were sold in the large, highly fashionable shops. At the age of 14, Joseph Draps went into the family business. Over the years, he developed both his ability and creative talent as a master chocolate maker as well as his business sense. He decided to create a prestige range of chocolates and to give it an evocative name. He chose “Godiva” and marketed his chocolates in recognizable gold boxes. In recognition of its excellence, Godiva has been rewarded with an

appointment as supplier to the Court of Belgium. Godiva continues to be an innovator in gourmet chocolate.

8. Richard Donnelly

These chocolates are unusual, to say the least. Richard Donnelly likes to push the chocolate experience by combining its rich tones — he uses Belgian and French chocolate, with ingredients such as lavender, chipotle, saffron, cardamom, and Earl Grey tea. Donnelly won the Best Artisan award at the prestigious Euro Chocolate Festival in Perugia, Italy, just ten years after he opened his shop. To maintain quality and ensure freshness, Donnelly produces no more than 50 pounds of chocolate a day. If you need a break from the exotic and unusual flavors, try Donnelly’s white chocolate macadamia nut or a honey vanilla caramel.

9. Richart

Committed to quality, the French chocolate-maker Richart guarantees you the most refined chocolates from the most refined ingredients. Richart recipes, developed and tested by the Richart family, have won France’s most prestigious confectioner’s honor, the Ruban Bleu, seven times. Having perfected the art of chocolate making, Richart now focuses on enhanced flavors and distinctive designs and colors. If you really want to impress, splurge on the $850 burlwood vault with seven drawers of chocolate complete with temperature and humidity gauges.

10. Puccini Bomboni

You will actually have to visit Amsterdam to sample what may be the best chocolates in the Netherlands. The proprietors of Puccini Bomboni, a delightful cafe and restaurant, hand-make each chocolate on the premises and do not deliver. Exotic combinations of chocolate and spices, concocted from the freshest ingredients, are a specialty. References: Intelligent Travel, NationalGeographic.com

5 HOLLYWOOD SKIN SECRETS

GET HOLLYWOOD

Skin

When celebrities hit the red carpet, they are expected to flaunt flawless, radiant skin. But healthy skin isn’t just for Hollywood stars—with a few simple skincare tips, you can enjoy star-worthy skin every day. To learn the secrets of Hollywood skin care, we turned to California-based dermatologist-to-the-stars Dr. Will Kirby, who has appeared on popular television shows such as Big Brother, Dr. 90210 and The Young and the Restless. “I believe that the quality of your skin is your first impression, says Dr. Kirby. “People in L.A. have beautiful skin, but if you have the right information, you can have beautiful skin no matter where you live.

Here are his five best tips for a great complexion...

WANT GLOWING, HEALTHY SKIN?

Try these skin secrets from a Hollywood dermatologist. 1. Don’t leave home without sunscreen

“A broad-spectrum sunscreen is imperative,” says Kirby, who is a spokesperson for skin-care company Neutrogena. Kirby found out that he had skin cancer after appearing on Big Brother in 2001. Since then, he has become a huge proponent of sunscreen. “Women are much more comfortable embracing skincare than men,” says Dr. Kirby. “So ladies, you need to get your men on sunscreen. Whether it’s your boyfriend, your husband, your father or your male child. They need to understand that it’s important.” When looking for a new sunscreen, Kirby suggests that you select a formula that has a minimum SPF factor of 30. Also look for a formula that is broad-spectrum, meaning that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. And be sure to re-apply every four hours.

2. Fight the signs of aging with retinol

It is possible to achieve youthful, radiant skin like your favorite celeb without the help of surgery or fillers. The secret is to look for skin creams that contain retinol. “Retinol is well established and widely accepted in the world of dermatology,” says Kirby. “Products that contain stabilized retinol are a must-have, because they help to increase surface cell renewal.” However, he cautions that with any skincare regime, you must be consistent. As you age, cell turnover can take anywhere from 35 to 57 days. “Any product you use, it’s going to take that long to see results,” he says. Be patient!

3. Don’t underestimate diet and exercise

It may be a cliché to say “you are what you eat,” but it really is possible to eat your way to better skin. “Make sure you’re getting plenty of foods with antioxidants, like blueberries,” says Kirby. And don’t forget to stick to your workouts. “Exercise increases blood flow, which is great for your skin,” says Kirby. Aside from helping to deliver important nutrients to your skin, a good sweat session will also eliminate skin-sabotaging toxins from your system and give you a nice, rosy glow.

4. Don’t fall for fads

“There are a lot of trendy products out there right now, like goji berry creams. They’re sexy, but not clinically proven,” Kirby warns. His advice: your focus shouldn’t be on what’s new, but on what works. “Don’t jump on things until they’ve been proven,” he cautions. So before you rush out to spend your hard-earned dollars on the latest products, do a little research and make sure that the “magic ingredient” will really benefit your skin.

5. Find a dermatologist

If you’re looking for an expert opinion on your specific skincare needs, or have nagging skin issues that need to be addressed, it may help to seek out a dermatologist. With so many skin care experts out there, it can be difficult to know which doctor is right for you. Kirby’s top tip? “Find someone who’s a great teacher,” he says. “I really like being a teacher and having the opportunity to educate people about their skin.” As well, make sure the skincare expert you see has the proper credentials. The Most Overlooked

Laser Tax Deductions Treatment

Fungus Toenails

STATE SALES TAXES You may hear that this tax break expired . . . which it does regularly, only to be just as regularly revived by Congress.

That’s exactly what happened for purposes of 2014 returns. The break expired at the end of 2013, and then was revived retroactively in December 2014 to cover 2014 returns. And then it died again on December 31. Right now, we don’t know what the rule will before 2015. But for 2014 returns, the state sales tax deduction option is alive and well. This is particularly important to you if you live in a state that does not impose a state income tax. You see, Congress offers itemizers the choice between deducting the state income taxes or state sales taxes they paid. You choose whichever gives you the largest deduction. So if your state doesn’t have an income tax, the sales tax write-

off is clearly the way to go. In some cases, even filers who pay state income taxes can come out ahead with the sales tax choice. The IRS has tables that show how much residents of various states can deduct, based on their income and state and local sales tax rates. But the tables aren’t the last word. If you purchased a vehicle, boat or airplane, you may add the sales tax you paid on that big-ticket item to the amount shown in the IRS table for your state. The IRS even has an online calculator that shows how much residents of various states can deduct, based on their income and state and local sales tax rates. Reference: MSN.com

TECHNOLOGY WILL CHANGE TRAVEL IN 2015 Telegraph Travel technology writer Donald Strachan looks at new hardware and software trends for 2015.

Gone Roaming

Of course, a mobile phone is useless if you can’t afford to use it. I have written regularly this year about roaming, including how to avoid charges with apps such as Roamer (Android, iOS; roamerapp.com). Roaming will continue to be an issue, but welcome changes may arrive for European travellers. In April, the European Parliament voted to end roaming charges within the EU by December 2015. Details are still to be confirmed. In the meantime, anyone on three “can look forward to further additions of countries to the Feel at Home offer in 2015”, according to the company. Feel at Home allows customers to use their mobiles abroad with no extra roaming charges, and currently applies in 16 countries. The convergence between phone and wallet will accelerate. It is not yet clear when Apple’s mobile payments system, Apple Pay, will come to Britain. Zapp is already working with banks and retailers to add a mobile payment capability to existing UK banking apps. Zapp’s service will launch in 2015.

16

Pay as you go

Some travel apps already have a built-in payment function, including taxi services such as Uber and Hailo and last-minute hotel service HotelTonight. Restaurant app OpenTable (Android, iOS; opentable.co.uk) is trialling payment direct from its app in several US cities, including New York and San Francisco. Set to launch in London, new restaurant app Reserve (iOS; reserve.com) also enables diners to settle their bill in-app. Paying with your phone will become more mainstream in 2015.

Wear it’s at

There is already plenty of buzz about “wearable technology”, particularly smart watches. The Apple Watch launches next spring, but Android Wear devices including the Motorola Moto 360, are already on sale. Travel apps will learn how to make best use of this new hardware. For example, clever itinerary management app TripCase (Android, iOS; tripcase.com) automatically notifies a connected watch if

© Western New York Fashion and Lifestyle|February 2015

your flight is delayed, cancelled or even if the departure gate changes. One of my favourite apps, Rain Alarm (Android, iOS, Windows Phone; rain-alarm.com), also works smoothly with Android Wear. My watch simply vibrates when rain is heading my way. More travel apps will work in tandem with smart watches by this time next year.

Tech Times

Another sure bet is that hotels will get increasingly tech-savvy. Guests can already check in from a phone with the Starwood SPG and Hilton HHonors apps, for example. Both hotel groups are rolling out mobile phone

keys during 2015, so you will be able to walk straight to your room and enter with one tap of a phone. Starwood’s iOS app is even ready for check-in with an Apple Watch. Premier Inn’s new “tech hotel” brand, hub by Premier Inn (hubhotels.co.uk), is plans another 10 UK openings alongside its Covent Garden flagship hotel. As well as mobile booking, the hub app controls in-room climate and entertainment.

Joined up thinking

Separate travel applications can work together thanks to a technology most travellers never see first-hand, the “application

programming interface” or API. An API is a set of tools developers use to link complementary services. For example, in the US, Google Maps users can now book a restaurant table directly from the map thanks to an OpenTable API. Users can simply type “nearby pizza” in the Maps search box, read reviews, and quickly book without jumping between apps. I can begin to book a taxi from inside the Citymapper transport navigation app (Android, iOS; citymapper.com) if I don’t fancy the public transport options. A quest is on to develop the “super app”, one that feels like a proper mobile travel assistant, so interest in travel APIs will grow in 2015.

No language barrier

We will also see innovations in some travel mainstays, including Skype. The Microsoft-owned service recently demonstrated its Skype Translator tool, which allows people speaking two different languages to talk to each other hearing simultaneous translation of the conversation. Right now it works on Windows machines between English and Spanish only, but more languages and platforms will surely follow. It’s not

difficult to envisage how useful a version of that could be on holiday.

On the case

The suitcase has been around for a long time, but “smart luggage” will touch down in 2015. New York start-up Bluesmart (bluesmart.com) has successfully crowdfunded a carry-on suitcase that weighs itself, and which you can lock, unlock and track via GPS from (you guessed it) your smartphone. So one lesson for travellers in 2015 is this: you had better not leave your phone at home – or lose it either. With everything from boarding passes and train tickets to bank cards and room keys stored on a handset, a pickpocket or mobile virus could seriously disrupt your trip. Apps such as Lookout (Android, iOS; lookout.com) scan downloads for viruses and other malware, and allow you to track or remotely wipe a phone if it is lost or stolen. In 2015, travelling with your mobile secured and close at to hand, will be one key to a hassle-free holiday.

TOP HONEYMOON DESTINATIONS FOR 2015

Recently, a handful of wedding and travel websites have released their top 2015 lists for best honeymoon locations. If you are engaged and dreaming about the perfect honeymoon, or perhaps you just want to take a romantic getaway with your significant other whatever the case, now is the time to start researching the best destination options.

18

Recently, a handful of wedding and travel websites have just released their 2015 lists for the top honeymoon locations, and many of them are reporting that couples are looking for more adventure than ever before. “We have witnessed new-age couples seeking engaging, distinctive, and fun destinations,” said Mohit Gupta, chief business and marketing officer of MakeMyTrip, to Yahoo. Gupta said that many couples want to create a unique experience that will be unforgettable such as undersea walking, learning how to make exotic cuisine, or visiting a luxury spa. “So be it selfdrive holidays, wildlife trails and jungle safaris, exhilarating activity like rappelling, white water rafting, ice climbing,

© Western New York Fashion and Lifestyle|February 2015

kayaking or paragliding, adventure seems to be the flavour of the season,” Gupta continued. And now some of the travel and wedding industries are tapping into these trends, calling them “adventure-moons.” “Adventure-moons are increasing at a phenomenal rate, with couples looking to tick off bucket list trips such as trekking to Machu Picchu in Peru, cycling coast to coast in New Zealand or riding a Harley-Davidson across the USA,” said Kerry Golds, of Abercrombie & Kent, according to The Huffington Post in the United Kingdom. With the adventure and romance aspirations kept in mind, websites have begun to offer some ideal getaways this season. According to The Eppoch

Times, The Seychelles, a collection of islands in the Indian Ocean, is one popular destination for lovers with its white sand beaches and coral reefs. An increase of flight availability and a spike in tourism enhancement has made the Bahamas into a picturesque setting for couples for the honeymoon and wedding. “We are buoyed by the response to the competition and gratified that there is so much interest to be married in the Bahamas. People of all walks of life, including celebrated personalities, are drawn to the islands of the Bahamas for picture-perfect weddings. The setting really does it,” Tourism Director -General Joy Jibrilu said in a statement reported by Fox News. Aside from The Bahamas, the

Destination Wedding Directory writes on its website that Tahiti, Borneo, Brazil and Bali are also a number of honeymoon locations that have had high travel bookings for their exotic climates and unique travel activities. Virtuoso reported that the “ultimate beach escape” would be the Maldives and French Polynesia. While some couples may be able to put aside some time to travel after their nuptials, other couples may have to work around tighter work schedules that do not allow for extended vacation time. The Huffington Post suggested that those tied down with work can take a “mini-moon” and then save for a longer trip later in the year. The Wedding Wire writes that mini-moons usually last three to four days. Some domestic mini-moon suggestions by The Wedding Wire were New York City and Santa Barbara, CA., as they

have a plethora of sight-seeing opportunities. Along with time constraints, some couples may have to work around a tight budget. Fox News reported that Mexico is both romantic and inexpensive. Hawaii and Jamaica are also two locations that are both beautiful and can be tailored for a specific budget. Whatever location a couple ultimately chooses for their dream honeymoon, they need to keep in mind that they should try to plan ahead and book in advance. “For domestic bookings, we have seen advance booking by at least 90 days. For international short-haul destinations, bookings are made 30 to 45 days in advance, while for long haul it’s 45-60 days in advance,” said Gupta. Do It Yourself or Call a Pro? Starting Out Small

These days, the urge to save a few dollars here and there may be inspiring the creatively inclined to try their hand at home renovation. Before picking up the paint brush or tearing up that carpeting however, it may be worth it to consult a professional designer or architect. With myriad building codes, board rules , and the unknown risks that lie within each load-bearing wall or decades-old bundle of wires, the D-I-Y approach can get tricky for even the handiest homeowner.

20

Still, that isn’t to say that there aren’t plenty of small things a homeowner can do that will make a big difference to the look and feel of their co-op or condo. Marilyn Sygrove, president of Sygrove Associates Design Group, Inc. in Manhattan, says there are a variety of inexpensive yet highly effective options for people who want to freshen up their living space. “First, less can indeed be more. “A good, old-fashioned spring cleaning where you can edit some of your possessions and dispose of damaged or less useful items” can be a good option, Sygrove says. “Simply getting rid of something you have been hanging on to opens up your space. Less clutter and repositioning what you have decided to retain can make a

© Western New York Fashion and Lifestyle|February 2015

huge difference in the appearance of the size of the apartment. If you can see the floor, the space will look larger.” Organization can also help in achieve that de-cluttered effect. “Remove things that stick out, like hanging shelves or racks,” Sygrove says. “They cut into your space. A long-term worthwhile investment would be to have your closets outfitted for better storage so you can eliminate wall mounted shelving that eats up space.” Designer Kim Depole, owner of Kim Depole Design Inc. in Manhattan, suggests oversized mirrors as another inexpensive way to shake up a room. “They provide double the lighting effect,” she says. And as an added bonus, “just about everyone likes to look at themselves when they are

running out of the building.” Light is also key, Sygrove says. “Get rid of heavy window treatments and add a few more lamps to give the apartment a lighter feeling,” she suggests. That sense of light can be achieved through color choices as well. “Keep your floors light in color, which is easily done with a new light-colored rug,” Sygrove says. “Floating furniture on a rug also gives the feeling of space.” Also, “Your furnishings and finishes should be as monochromatic as possible. Get rid of those flashy throw pillows and replace them with colors that match the furniture and walls. And if you are repainting, keep to light, soothing colors that are in the same family as the important pieces of upholstered furniture and window treatments.”

Even the bathroom can benefit from some relatively minor touches. “A see-through shower curtain will make the bathroom look larger,” Sygrove says. “Replace a chunky vanity that goes to the floor with a lighter pedestal-style sink on legs. They still come with built-in storage.”

First Steps

Before replacing that sink, though, it’s important to follow all of the proper steps for larger at-home projects. One of a homeowner’s first calls should be to management. “It has been our experience that before any work is to be performed, the unit owner must provide the managing agent and board with the information required in the building’s alteration rules and practices,” says Dennis H. Greenstein, a Manhattan-based

co-op and condo real estate attorney and partner at Seyfarth Shaw. “Generally the painting of apartments and delivery of cabinetry to be installed does not require the prior approval of the board. However, it is not unusual for the board to still require insurance from any workers and contractors prior to the work commencing.” Steve Zirinsky, president of Zirinsky Architecture PC, agrees. “Buildings are becoming more and more restrictive these days,” he says. “It’s important to talk to your managing agent to find out what involvement the building wants you to have from outside professionals. You should do this for anything more than painting. One of the safest bets is to simply consult first with the building’s designer or architect before launching into any new projects. The

architect knows the building best and can determine if your project will affect any structural aspects of the building. Often, a resident will start work on what they think is a small project only to find it has larger repercussions. Zirinsky tells the story of a building architect who was overseeing some exterior renovation work. One afternoon, he heard pounding coming from inside one of the apartments. When he peeked inside the window, he saw the unit owner chipping away at a ledge he later learned the resident did not like. It turned out that the seemingly innocuous ledge was actually a relieving masonry wall. If the unit owner had succeeded in dismantling it, the whole corner of the building—six or seven stories—would have come down. “Of course the owner didn’t know this,” Zirinsky says. “He thought he was just taking out some bricks. But that’s why it’s important to turn to people who have been trained to do this kind of work.” Alterations and improvements such as moving walls, changing or adding plumbing or electrical lines generally requires that the unit owner sign an alteration agreement with the

board, says Greenstein. “The agreement requires plans and specifications to be provided to show all of the work to be performed, which is then reviewed by the building’s architect. It also requires insurance from the contractor and where applicable, filings with the Department of Buildings (DOB), such as a work permit. Finding the proper tradespeople to carry out the work is key. “One rule that should be written in stone is to hire licensed tradesmen,” says Depole. “Electricians and plumbers should be vetted before starting any work. It only takes one simple phone call to the licensing board.” Checking on past histories also may contribute to getting the best crew possible. “Having a good contractor is essential,” she adds. “I always check at least four references and take the time to see the work with the former clients at hand to confirm the workmanship. Like any other process, you need to do your prep work and take the word ‘assume’ out of your vocabulary.” References: Cooperator.com

2. Kaely’s Kindess Foundation

Kaely’s Kindness is a 501 C3 non for profit focused on providing, practical, social, and emotional support to teen girls diagnosed with cancer. Research has shown that adolescence is a difficult time and with an added diagnosis of cancer, the adjustment is much more difficult and peer support a necessity to the healing process. Kaely’s Kindness was started 6 months after Kaely Kwitek was diagnosed with Stage 4 Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, where Kaely found minimal resources available to aid her in dealing with her cancer diagnosis. Kaely wanted support and guidance from other teen girls who were experiencing the same symptoms and diagnosis as she had. Kaely’s Kindness offers teen girls touched by cancer, monthly educational and social events where they can provide peer support to each other. Past events consisted of dinners, spa days, pottery painting, yoga classes, smoothie classes, and educational seminars. At these events, all of the girls get together and are able to talk about their cancer and what they are experiencing. While on their journeys, they provide support during their chemotherapy, during their hospital stays, during their scan results, and at the end of their chemo. Lifelong friendships are formed and a support network like no other, as a result of Kaelys Kindness

took care of every detail of the rescue, including all the paperwork. Winton raised $76 per child and even organized the children’s transport to the UK. He also personally ensured that each and every child ended up in the best foster home once they arrived in the UK. Nicholas Winton saved the lives of 669 Jewish children – and his wife only learnt of the operation when she found the paperwork in their attic in 1988.

5. Jonas Salk

After raising $33,000 pound for a revolutionary stem cell operation that would enable him to walk again, twenty-five-year-old Daniel read about 6-year-old Brecon Vaughan who had cerebral palsy and needed a similar operation. Daniel selflessly donated all the money he had to Brecon’s. With Daniel’s help, Brecon has now raised the money he needs to walk again!
