Top academic students to attend Daemen Scholar’s Day A record number of high school seniors will compete for Daemen College academic scholarships, including the institution’s prestigious Trustee Scholarships, at the 11th annual Scholar’s Day taking place on Feb. 7. More than 230 highachieving students from across New York State will be in attendance, along with students from Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, as well as an international student from Vietnam who will attend via Skype. To be considered for the scholarships, prospective

first-year students must be accepted into the college and nominated by Daemen’s Trustee Committee and then may apply for the awards. Students attending Scholar’s Day will be interviewed on campus by Daemen faculty, staff and alumni and area high school counselors. “Students select a college based on its academic reputation and our Trustee Scholarships provide students the opportunity to receive an excellent, affordable education at Daemen,” said Dr. Patricia Brown, vice president for enrollment management. “College is the single best

investment a student will make in their life and those attending Scholar’s Day recognize the value of a Daemen education.” According to Brown, of the first-year students who attend Scholar’s Day and enroll at Daemen, 3 percent are Trustee Scholars and 82 percent receive President’s and Dean’s Scholarships, the college’s highest merit awards. Trustee Scholarships range from full tuition (approximately $100,000 over four years), to $17,000 ($68,000 over four years), and $13,000-$14,000 ($52,000 and $56,000 over four years). Selection is based on

academic achievement; vision for self and society; enthusiasm and inspiration; academic and personal discipline; and leadership ability. Both intellect and character are considered and selected scholars are those who have the potential to make a difference in their careers and in the Daemen community. “Daemen faculty, staff and alumni play a key role in conducting Scholar’s Day interviews, which is an important component in the selection process and recognizing the special achievements of these outstanding first-year students,” said Brown.

Daemen president committee Daemen College President Gary A. Olson has been appointed to a three-year term on the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) Committee on Policy Analysis and Public Relations. The national committee focuses on identifying current and future issues affecting independent higher education, and suggests priorities and strategies for research and for public relations activities to enhance public understanding of and support for independent higher education. The committee is comprised of NAICU board members, appointed college and university presidents, state association executives, and heads of the NAICU Secretariat organizations. “I’m honored to represent Daemen and higher education in this national capacity,” said Olson. “Higher education policy issues, including college affordability, campus sexual assault policies, and college access, have been at the forefront of discussions across the country, making the work of this committee more vital than ever.” A regular contributor of

higher education columns and opinion pieces, Olson was recently ranked fifth among the top 14 most prolific college and university presidents

nationwide based on nearly 600 opinion pieces by higher education presidents in a study released by PhairAdvantage Communications.

Red Cross calls for blood donors as unique as the patients they help In honor of Black History Month this February, and in the spirit of Dr. Charles Drew, an African-American surgeon who was the first medical director of the American Red Cross and a modern blood-banking pioneer, eligible donors as diverse as the patients who need their blood donations are encouraged to give blood to ensure a sufficient blood supply. Blood from a donor with a similar ethnic background as that of the patient is less likely to cause complications, particularly for those patients whose chronic conditions require repeated transfusions. Sickle cell disease is one such chronic condition affecting as many as 100,000 people in the United States. Prior to transfusion, blood type and Rh factor are matched between donated blood

and the patient in need. In some cases, additional red cell markers in donated blood must be matched, as well. These markers are best found in blood from donors of a similar ethnicity. With seasonal flu and inclement winter weather preventing many regular donors from giving, the Red Cross urges healthy, eligible donors to make an appointment to donate blood in the coming days and weeks. All blood types are currently needed to help maintain a diverse and sufficient blood supply, especially types O negative, A negative and B negative. To learn more about donating blood and to schedule an appointment, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood. org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-7332767).

Local sports Hall thrives as Will South’s first option off the bench By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER

Myles Hall is the sixth man. And while that wasn’t his expectation or his hope coming into the season, the Williamsville South junior captain thrives in that role. “My expectation for this season was to start, and I do not start,” Hall said. “I’m the sixth man, which is ok. I really enjoy it. I think I have a significant role on the team, and I do.” Hall’s confidence and willingness to step up when he’s needed have aided his success this season. He has 116

points, which is fifth on the team. And he’s happy with the way he’s played so far. “I feel great about the way I’m playing,” Hall said. “I feel like I’m playing way better than I did last year, and I’m stepping up every time coach [Gabe Michael] needs me.” Michael said that Hall is good enough to be a starter with the way he’s playing. But Hall has been extremely valuable in the role he’s had this season. Hall’s knowledge that his role is a unique one overshadows any disappointment he may feel over not starting. He knows that it isn’t often that a player can come off the bench and have the kind of success he’s had. “[My role] means a lot to me, it really does,” Hall said. “Usually in high school

basketball, nobody’s coming off the bench and scoring 116 points or putting up big numbers, really. And I feel like I’m really the only person in this area, in our division, that comes off the bench and has a good game every time and has a major impact on the team. Not many people off the bench get the chance to do that.” Not only does he provide offensive numbers, but Hall said he’s able to see a need and fill it, whatever the situation may be. “As a player and a captain, I feel like I bring everything that the team needs,” he said. “When we need energy, I give energy. When we need a defensive play, I give the defensive play.” In his role, Hall is also able to see improvements that can be made. Although

Williamsville South has just one loss so far this season, Hall believes the team can be even better. “I just feel like we need to move the ball a little better,” he said. “We haven’t really had trouble moving the ball. It’s just that when it sticks, we don’t look like the team that we should.” Hall expects that South will make it to the sectional finals at Buffalo State College and even go beyond that with the way the team is playing this season. And if a few improvements can be made, he’ll be even more confident. “We just need to play defense and move the ball,” Hall said. “If we can do those things, I think we’re going to be a good team. The sky’s really the limit for us, to be honest.”

Tonawanda), one goal,

one assist; Finn Graham (of Clarence) and Tucker Schoen (of Grand Island) each, two assists; Owen McIntyre (of Lockport) and Thomann each, one assist. Later on Feb. 1, the Stallions found themselves trailing Team Cleveland, 3-1, at the beginning of the third. Marchant, who had setup an earlier goal by Stadelmaier, setup a rebound tap in by Santa Maria. Then, Marchant added a goal of his own to tie the game with less than three minutes remaining. Fulfaro then blasted in another game-winner, this time with 21 seconds left on a pass from Santa Maria to put the Stallions up, 4-3, and keep the Stallions undefeated on their Ohio road trip.

Local sports Will North shakes off layoff, downs ‘scrappy’ Clarence team

By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER

Although Williamsville North came into Tuesday’s (Feb. 3) game undefeated in league play, coach Bill Shaw knew that Clarence would be a tough opponent. And with his team’s most recent practice being Saturday, he wasn’t as confident as he would have liked to be. The Spartans did end up outlasting the Red Devils in a 57-43 victory, but Clarence didn’t make it easy. “We didn’t practice Sunday, and we didn’t practice Monday, and now we’ve got a game against a good team,” Shaw said after Tuesday’s

win. “Clarence is a very good team. They’re scrappy, they battle with you, so I was concerned with it.” North led by 10 points after one quarter and nine at halftime, but Clarence chipped away at that lead in the third quarter. The Red Devils scored 18 points in the third while North scored just 12, and North led by just three points as the third quarter came to an end. It was in the fourth quarter that North really stepped up both offensively and defensively. “It took us until the fourth quarter to really get our legs and get moving,” Shaw said. “I thought we played a great fourth quarter. The first three quarters were suspect, but the fourth quarter we played very well.” As for Clarence, coach Erin Booker liked the way her team handled itself against the best team in the division.

The Red Devils played good defense, limited turnovers, and were able to improve on some aspects of the game that they’ve been working on. “I thought we played really well defensively,” Booker said. “I was proud of my

team. They played smart basketball tonight. They really didn’t turn the ball over a lot. We did a great job on the boards, which is something we’ve been working on. We’re missing one of our starters tonight,

too, Anna Davies, so it hurt us underneath a little bit. But shooting wise, I just told them in the locker room, I was proud of them.” Ericka Taplin led North’s offense with 24 points, but Shaw also liked what he saw from Clare Ahern, especially in the fourth quarter in which she scored four points. “Ericka Taplin played very well,” Shaw said. “She just comes to play every night. She’s tough, she bangs, she rebounds, she posts up strong. We have to do a better job of getting her the ball. “Clare Ahern was outstanding in the fourth quarter, just outstanding. She did things really well to kind of key us in the fourth quarter. I thought everybody played well in the fourth quarter.” For Clarence, Gabbi Pacatte led the way. In addition to her 11 points, she had five steals and five assists. “She really broke through

and hit some big threes,” Booker said. “To be down by three points in the fourth quarter against [North] is a great turnout, and she had a lot to do with that. She played well defensively. She just had a great all-around game. She was a good leader on the floor tonight.” Shaw knows that his team is capable of playing the way it played in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s game all the time, as evidenced by North’s 9-0 record in league play. But he did give credit where it was due. Although Clarence fell to 4-3 with Tuesday’s loss, Shaw knows it can be a tough team to beat. “That’s the basketball we’re capable of playing,” he said of Tuesday’s fourth quarter. “Again, it was one of those situations where I was kind of concerned with the layoff, and I didn’t think it was going to bite us, but Clarence, they’re well-coached.”

Martinsen’s bloodlines beneficial in evolution as basketball star drafted by the Utah Jazz following graduation. “We had really awesome talent back then,” Gregg Martinsen said. “Of course, Northeastern used to beat us all the time, but we won two-thirds of our games.” By Melissa Brawdy After coaching both of his SPORTS REPORTER sons’teams at Nativity of Mary in Clarence, Martinsen coached Basketball has always been his daughter Erica’s teams a constant in the Martinsens’ from kindergarten up through lives. the AAU team that Erica now Gregg Martinsen played for plays for during the spring and some very successful Canisius summer. College basketball teams in the But now, Gregg watches Erica early 1980s. He played with star for the Williamsville East the likes of Mike Smreck, who varsity team. And while he isn’t went on to play for the Los her official coach at East, Gregg Angeles Lakers, and Lawrence still helps Erica work on her “Sugar Ray” Hall, who was skills and coaches her in any

way he can. “It’s a little weird that now someone else is coaching her at the high school level,” Gregg said. “We still go to the Y every night, or LA Fitness, and shoot. It’s been a lot of fun.” But Gregg doesn’t give himself credit for what he believes has been Erica’s biggest improvement recently. Her shot has improved thanks to Tim Sullivan, a shooting coach who has worked with NBA stars such as Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade and who was another of Gregg’s teammates at Canisius. “She’s really improved her offensive part of the game,” Gregg said. “Tim Sullivan had helped her shot tremendously.

Erica and Tim get together twice a week. That’s helped the most. I wish I could take credit for it, but Tim is just phenomenal. She’s just had so much confidence in her shot, and it’s a real pretty shot.” Erica appreciates the fact that her father is always there to turn to when she needs to work on her game. “Having him coaching me makes it easier because he’s constantly always there,” Erica said. “Even when I don’t have a real practice, I can go to him and every day work with him at home.” And that constant work has led to the success Erica has had this season. She leads her team with 311 points, 29 assists,

and 52 steals. She’s second in rebounds with 54. “Since I do work every day and I’m constantly trying to improve my skills, it’s paid off a lot and really helped me,” Erica said. Although Erica enjoys individual success, her focus is on her team. After winning sectionals last season, she and her teammates weren’t sure what to expect this year after losing some key players. “Coming into the season, I thought that it was going to be a little tougher this year because we did lose eight seniors,” Erica said. So far this season, East is 8-5, and Erica said the toughness of this season makes each win

more enjoyable. “This season’s been definitely tougher than last year, but it’s more fun when we win because we know that even though it’s harder, it’s still possible, and we want to get to the same place we were last year — sectionals. So that’s our goal.” To make that happen, Erica, with her father’s help, will continue to work hard to improve every day. She hopes her teammates will do the same so that together they can win as many games as possible. “Every game matters,” Erica said. “Every league game, we have to win from here until sectionals. Just get all the wins we can, and hopefully make it there.”

Erie County Fair ranks 10th largest fair, Daemen receives third largest county fair in North America grant for program A ranking of top fairs and exhibitions has named the Erie County Fair the 10th largest fair in North America in 2014. The ranking of fairs, based on attendance, is published annually by CarnivalWarehouse.com. The list includes all county and state fairs, exhibitions, livestock and rodeo shows in the United States and Canada. “This historic ranking is something that the entire Buffalo-Niagara region can take pride in accomplishing,” said Jessica Underberg, Assistant Fair Manager. “When looking at the ranking, you need to consider that the Erie County Fair out draws most of the state fairs in the United States.” In August 2014, the Erie County Fair celebrated its 175th fair and experienced a record-setting number of visitors. Attendance of 1,220,101 broke the previous record set in 2013 by 5 percent. Tenth place is the best North American ranking

received by the Erie County Fair in the modern era of fair tabulations. The 2014 Erie County Fair was highlighted by the opening of the Agriculture Discovery Center, a 1400 ft skywalk by Nik Wallenda, an opening day performance by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the celebration of a 90 year partnership with the James E. Strates Shows midway. In addition, the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE) recently announced that the Erie County Fair was the winner of 31 awards. The Erie County Fair competed in a divisional class that consisted of fairs with attendance of over one million, which puts the Erie County Fair in the same class as many of the largest state fairs. The Erie County Fair won in the following categories: AGRICULTURAL AWARDS 1st Place - What was newly established or developed at your fair to

The Fair strives to fulfill appropriate aspects of the agricultural, educational, entertainment and recreational needs of all that visit the Fair. In 2015, the 176th Erie County Fair will take place Aug. 12 through 23.

Daemen College’s Refugee Teen Empowerment Program, which provides mentoring and Regents exam preparation to refugee youth living on Buffalo’s West Side, has received a $15,000 grant from the Erie County Youth Services Bureau. The refugee teen program is intended to help make a high school and college education possible for refugee students who resettle in Buffalo, including many who have fled life-threatening, traumatic circumstances in their home countries. Daemen’s program targets junior and senior refugee students attending Lafayette High School and assists in preparing the teens for Regents exams and graduation. Tutoring sessions are coordinated by the Daemen Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement (CSCCE) and the Office of Service Learning, with service learning students serving as tutors and mentors. Last fall, Daemen students contributed 1,040 hours of service to the program. “Refugee students assisted through the program speak English as a second language and have had minimal formal education, which makes it immensely challenging for them to be successful when they take Regents exams,” said Cheryl Bird, executive director of the CSCCE. “Because of this grant, we will be able to continue offering vital support that will assist the students in overcoming these difficulties

and go on to achieve their educational goals.” In addition to tutoring and mentoring, program participants are offered enrichment activities, including presentations on the college application process, financial aid, scholarships, and SAT preparation. The college also hosts the refugee students for Daemen Day where they have the opportunity to tour the campus and learn about the college experience. Since the program’s inception in 2006, it has proven to be highly effective and beneficial to students, including two recent program participants who were named national Gates Millennium Scholars. What’s more, for the January 2014 Regents exams, 92 percent of participants increased their grades compared to a previous Regents exam, and 87 percent of the 251 students from the program who took a June 2014 Regents improved their grades. “This was a wonderful opportunity to help refugee teens who came to a foreign country with no understanding about the educational system whatsoever,” shared one Daemen student in feedback gathered from those who assisted with the program. Another student said, “I loved working with the refugee students. It was a new experience for me and it was nice getting to know the students and helping them. I admire their determination and goals for the future.”

Empowering parents to manage their kids’ wireless use (NAPSI)—Today’s techsavvy generation quickly adapts and enjoys using mobile devices such as cell phones, smartphones and tablets to communicate, learn and play, anytime and anywhere. To help parents manage their kids’ usage and encourage responsible behavior, CTIA—The Wireless Association, which represents the wireless industry, developed GrowingWireless.com, a website developed by parents in the wireless industry for parents who need easy-tounderstand information and resources. Updated regularly, the website offers examples of situations and how parents may want to respond; for example, what parents can do if their child is being bullied, how to protect their privacy and how to manage their kids’ monthly usage so they don’t go over the

allotted monthly limits in the Dollars and Sense section. Visitors to the website will also see information on how to identify and prevent sexting and how to protect kids’ personal information in the Privacy and Security section. GrowingWireless.com also offers a parent’s “tool kit” with a list of parental control tools that are offered by wireless carriers and manufacturers. Parental control tools help parents manage and monitor their kids’ wireless usage. The website also provides information about federal and state laws that help protect kids when they use mobile products and services. Setting family rules is one of the most important and effective steps that parents can take to help kids be responsible wireless users. GrowingWireless.com offers a sample template to help families make their

own decisions about what is acceptable wireless behavior for their kids, and the consequences if those rules are broken. Once agreed upon, these rules should be posted in a central location, such as the refrigerator, and periodically revisited as kids age and technology evolves. What is appropriate for a 12-year-old may be different than the rules for a 13-year-old. By empowering parents with accessible information, they will be able to proactively educate themselves and their kids to solve problems before they arise. By teaching kids about wireless common sense and responsible use today, they will be better prepared to harness wireless increasingly for education and will be better equipped for jobs in other sectors such as utilities, health care, government services and public safety.

Outside Sales Representatives Serving Western New York since 1968, Community Papers of WNY is New York State’s largest locally owned publisher of free weekly community newspapers. As our family of products and distribution area continue to grow, we need to fill several entry-level, outside sales representative positions. The ideal candidate does not need outside sales experience. We will train the right person. They must however possess exceptional communication, negotiation and time management skills; and be able to follow specific and successful sales process. Our ideal Outside Sales Representative will need to establish rapport with people from all walks of life; wear different hats based on each client’s needs and is open to coaching and advice.

We can show you how to tap into manufacturers’ advertising reimbursement funds that are set aside just for you. This no-cost service could pay big dividends for your company.
