Gowanda sports report By Mark Benton SPORTS REPORTER
• The Gowanda varsity football team posted a Class C South division record of 2-3 this past season. As a result, the Panthers were awarded three first team selections on the conference All-Star squad. Senior Kenny Brant was chosen as an offensive tackle. He paved the way for the Panthers’ dynamic rushing attack that also secured non-league victories over Brocton-Westfield and Akron. Classmate Lucas McKeever was selected as a first team linebacker. McKeever’s best performance was at Allegany-Limestone, as he was all over the field making plays. The third Gowanda selection was junior Chris Hammond. The lanky defensive end wreaked havoc all season long for opposing offenses. It was almost impossible for the opposition to run around his end. • Aaron Benton, a 2009 Gowanda Central School graduate, completed his first year as a varsity assistant football coach at Hilton Head, South Carolina High School. Benton served as an assistant coach at St. John Fisher College in the fall of 2013 while completing requirements for a teaching degree in Mathematics. He also teaches high school Math at Hilton Head and will return to the football staff next fall. • Sara Kwiatkowski scored six points for Springville’s varsity basketball team in a 45-27 win over St. Mary’s High School on Dec. 9. Kwiatkowski is a Collins Center resident and graduate of St. Joseph’s School.

Panthers fall to Silver Creek in league opener By Mark Benton SPORTS REPORTER
The varsity boys basketball teams at Silver Creek and Gowanda opened play in the CCAA East Division I with opposite results on Dec. 8. The Black Knights from Silver Creek jumped out to a 21-7 first-quarter lead over the Panthers and never looked back on their way to a 97-59 conquest. The game was played before a good
crowd in the Silver Creek gym. Gowanda was able to put up 20 points in the second quarter, but Silver Creek answered with 30 tallies of their own. A more experienced and taller team from Silver Creek played a major role in the lopsided final score. “We played well as a team,” Silver Creek head coach Rob Genco said. “I was pleased with our effort.” Seniors Bill Brooks and Chance Gates as well as
junior Trevon Thompson combined to score 76 of the team’s 97 points. Thompson led all scorers with 35 points. Gowanda had won the Joylan Theatre Tip-off Tournament on its home court the previous weekend but could not match the transition game of Silver Creek. “It was a tough game for us,” Panthers coach Andy Bobseine said. On the bright side, freshman Nate Brawdy meshed 20 points while Randy Ji-

The Gowanda and Cattaraugus-Little Valley/Pine Valley High School varsity wrestling teams opened the season with dual meets during the first two weeks of December. Gowanda won its first two meets by defeating Frewsburg and Portville. CLPV lost its opener to a combination of three schools: Chautauqua Lake, Clymer and Sherman. The Panthers from Gowanda traveled to Frewsburg to start their 2014-15 campaign. However, not much wrestling took place as the home team Bears forfeited seven matches to Gowanda. The final score was 66-9 as Gowanda barely broke a sweat. Things were much dif-
ferent when the Blue and White grapplers traveled to former Cattaraugs County rival Portville on Dec. 9. “We won a key Division II match,” coach Mark Leous stated. “Three of our wrestlers, Mickey Mentley, Mike Liskiewicz and Devin Richter, won by forfeit and that turned out to be the
difference.” The final score was 49-31 Gowanda. On the mat, Gowanda’s Brandon Arrigo, Lucas McKeever, Dalton Mills and Chelton Bellinger each pinned their opponent. Winners by decision were Chris Hammond and Cameron Whalen.

“We will now travel to Springville for the first annual Springville dual meet tournament on Dec. 13,” the longtime Gowanda coach said. Gowanda has a very experienced team this season. The Panthers placed fourth out of seven teams in the Southtowns Dual meet — which included several large schools — on Dec. 5 and 6. The could also do well in Springville. Cattaraugus-Little Valley, which has combined with Pine Valley for wrestling, took on another team that has combined three schools. CLPV lost to CLCS on Dec. 9, 5723. Coach Sam Grey was pleased with the effort of his team.

merson, Les Young and Carter Benton combined for 29 points. With their latest win, Silver Creek moved to 2-0 on the season. The Knights opened with a 40-point win over Westfield in a non-league affair on Dec. 5. They have two additional non-league games scheduled before the Christmas recess. The Blue and White Panthers returned home four nights later to host longtime rival Salamanca in another
CCAA East contest. And although the visiting Warriors would pull away late in the fourth quarter and win by 12, Gowanda played a much better game. Salamanca started fast and jumped out to a 16-8 lead after the first quarter. Gowanda came back in the second stanza and closed the gap to two at intermission.

Catt./LV bowlers expect to compete for title By Mark Benton SPORTS REPORTER
The Cattaraugus-Little Va l l e y b o y s a n d g i r l s varsity bowling season is underway. The boys team has lost to Salamanca and AlleganyLimestone while the girls are undefeated against the same two schools. “ We h a v e t h r e e r e turners from last year’s boys team and all five starters back from the girls squad,” coach John Busekist stated. “The girls should be very competitive in our league matches, while the boys team is making good progress.” The lettermen for the boys team include Jamie Belzile, Colin Liddle and
Andrew Larkin. “All three bowlers were very active in the junior bowling program throughout the summer and fall and will be much improved this year,” according to their coach. The Timberwolves have also added three bowlers in Tom Kehr, Andrew Lenahan and Mike Grey to this year’s team. Busekist says they are relative beginners but rapidly progressing. “For the boys, our toughest competition should come from Gowanda, Salamanca and Allegany-Limstone,” noted Busekist.

Gowanda bowlers confident strong contingent of returning talent can guide them to more success By Mark Benton SPORTS REPORTER
The Gowanda Central School varsity boys and girls bowling teams have finished near or at the top of the standings in each of the past three seasons. That
could also be the case again this season as both Panther teams are strong enough to bring home another first place trophy. The boys team is coached by Ryan Lipinski and has six returning players. “We have selected three seniors as our captains” Lipinski stated. “The tricaptains are Zach Gabel, Brent Bogardus and Eric Chimino.” Other team members include juniors Jarred Krajewski and Trevor Greco,
sophomore Dan Goodemote and freshman Kurt Stitzel. Gowanda lost its first match to Salamanca on Dec. 1 as the Warriors won three out of four games. “Salamanca is a very good team this season,” according to Lipinski. “This match was the start of a long season for us.” Chimino was Gowanda’s top kegler with a three-game set of 595. Bogardus was next in line with a respectable 557 set. Greco, in his first year of varsity bowl-
ing, rolled a 215. Krajewski also topped the coveted 200 mark with a 231 while Gabel notched a 196 game. “Our goal this year is to finish first in our league and place as high as we can at the Sectionals,” echoed Lipinski. The girls team, under the direction of Lois Piscitelli, is returning four bowlers. “Seniors Malyssa Farley and Brittnee Stelley will be our team captains,” Piscitelli announced. “We also return junior Brooke Hansen-Ivett

Randy Jimerson finished with 26 points in the Panthers’ game against Salamanca on Dec. 12.
When the second half began, Salamanca’s 6-foot7 center Jared Fish was sent to the bench with his fourth foul early in the period. Gowanda went to work and Randy Jimerson’s back-toback swishes from behind the arc propelled the Panthers into a 38-32 lead. However, the Grey and Red Warriors fought back and regained the lead by the end of the quarter. Gowanda was down by six points with three minutes to play, but the visitors scored on a few fast-break layups and went up by 10. Their lead was not threatened over the final few minutes of the game. The Panthers’ Jimerson had the game’s hot hand and finished with 26 points. GCS junior point guard Carter Benton was the only Panther to play the entire game. He scored 12 points to go along with five assists. Les Young also hit for double figures with 10 points. Gowanda will travel to Randolph for its third league game of the season on Dec. 23. Four nights later, the Panthers will begin to defend their 2013 tournament title in the Springville Emerling Ford Tournament.

and sophomore Brianna Thompson.” New players to grace the alleys at K & L Lanes this winter will be junior Krista Lennertz, freshman Chelsey Wielkie, and eighth graders Paige Gabel and Tatum Stitzel. The Lady Panthers opened the season by taking all four games against Salamanca on Dec. 1. Thompson led the way with a high game of 223. Stelley rolled a high game of 194 followed by Farley’s 186 and Hansen-Ivett’s 181.
“This match was only the beginning of a long and hard season,” Piscitelli noted. “Our goal is to stay competitive in our division and do very well at the Sectional match in February.” Gowanda’s bowling program has been the school’s most consistent and winningest high school sport over the past five years. With several veterans back on both squads this season, the success should continue for the Blue and White.
Lady T-Wolves return all bowlers from sectional team “Bowling” from page B1 On the girls side of the lanes, it is a different story. With everyone back from a team that finished fourth in league play and qualified for Sectionals, the Lady Timberwolves should be in the hunt for a title this season. The veteran bowlers include Vicki Grey, Britney Grey, Mindy Pritchard, Anna Gassman, Kaitlyn Parmenter and Sarah Whited. Except for senior Vicki Grey, the other five bowlers are only sophomores. This group of bowlers is also very active in the offseason junior bowling program, noted Busekist. “We have also added ninth grader Kaylee Giambrone plus two seventh graders Kayla Rosell and Brooke Wagatha to our team,” he said.
Jamie Belzile and Britney Grey are the team’s best bowlers based on last year’s average of 170 per game. However, Vicki Grey (160 average in 2013-14) will also be counted on to carry the girls team. Cattaraugus-Little Valley has scheduled upcoming matches with West Valley, Hinsdale and Gowanda. Their home matches are held at Cascade Lanes in Springville. In a sport like bowling, the top five keglers count towards the overall team scoring. It does not matter how large or small a school is in order to be successful. If both of the programs at Cattaraugus-Little Valley reach their potential, they will be able to compete with any school this winter regardless of their enrollement.

Rod, Gun & Game: Lake Erie walleye study in progress By Forrest Fisher OUTDOOR COLUMNIST
More than three decades ago, my Lake Erie boat fishing mentor, Russ Johnson of Elma, New York, taught me all about night fishing for Lake Erie walleye fishing out of Buffalo Harbor – and how to catch fish just about any other time too. Johnson was an electronics equipment expert and had built his own sonar, water temperature monitoring devices, light penetration measurement recorders, boat speed indicators and a host of other boat and fishing equipment that helped him identify how to become a consistent walleye-catching angler. The key word is “catching”. In the 1970’s Johnson has already figured out that hard body lures from the factory had to be fine-tuned to run true, and his favorite lure was a Rebel Deep Wee-R. The box said the lure would dive to 10-12 feet, Johnson had them bumping bottom at 25 feet with a little tuning. Then he calibrated his rods to resonate with the lure wobble vibration frequency and controlled the distance back from the boat to the lure while he trolled various bottom structure close to Buffalo Harbor. The result was perfect depth control for lure presentation to feeding fish, based on boat speed and line deployment. If general, if we fished slow speed trolls at night, we caught walleye. If we fished fast speed trolls during daylight, we caught bass – not ordinary bass, but giant bass in the four to seven pound range – all this on the same structure. During night fishing stints, Johnson would zero in on structure specific bottom cover in the lake that could be found within a 10-minute boat ride from Erie Basin Marina. Working that cover from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00
a.m., Johnson and I would limit out on walleye through the entire summer. We would hardly see another boat out there at those hours, but starting in mid-July, one thing we found different was the color and shape of the walleye we caught - they were streamlined and sort of bluish-gray in color. Johnson called them “wolf-pack walleye” because we would troll four rods at controlled deployment distances to avoid tangles and would hook up with two to four walleye each pass over the designated structure. Pretty awesome right!? It was! The guy was a genius angler way before the science of Fishing-Facts and In-Fisherman magazines ever reached the 1970’s newsstands. Today we all know more because of science and the study of fish, but back then, the softspoken and humble Johnson was a stand-alone world class fishing giant among local fishing anglers. Johnson knew that the July and August walleye we were catching were not the same as the May, June and September walleye. The color, shape and voracity of their feeding and fighting protocol was different. He informed DEC officials of this thoughts and soon was recognized for his virtuosity. DEC biologists all looked forward to hear of his mastermind observations at meetings with the public. Johnson helped the DEC to first question if Lake Erie walleye movements were real. Amazing stuff. Today we all know that those walleye were western basin walleye and they migrated the entire length of Lake Erie from Detroit to escape the shallow, hot, summer water western basin of Lake Erie. Our eastern basin is 80 percent deeper and as a result, we have cooler water and a large emerald shiner spawn here, lots
Buff State hockey downs Johnson & Wales BUFFALO, NY—Jason Zaleski (Scranton, PA/Scranton) scored three times and Ryan Salkeld (Virginia Beach, VA/Churchland) tallied four points to lead Buffalo State (3-6-2) to a 5-3 victory over visiting Johnson & Wales (55-1) in a non-conference game today at the Ice Arena. Salkeld opened the scoring with just over three minutes remaining in the opening period when he forced a turnover just inside the Wildcats’ blue line and buried the breakaway attempt. Johnson & Wales drew even, but Zaleski’s first of the game reclaimed the lead for Buffalo State with just 20 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Salkeld gave the Bengals a 3-1 lead with his second of the game and fifth of the season on the power play early in the
The result may be newly define management areas and fish quota zones for all of Lake Erie, but one thing for sure, the acoustic tagging efforts will yield many study factors, allowing NYS to once again contribute to the betterment of the fishery that millions of anglers enjoy in Lake Erie - the walleye fishery.

Some 40 years later, the DEC Lake Erie Unit out of Dunkirk is working the Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System, a program conducted together with Ohio, Canada and Pennsylvania to quantify the consistency, timing, demographics and other key factors of the west to east (and back again) walleye migration. This will also allow DEC to better understand our eastern basin walleye stocks, our deep water lake trout stocks and sturgeon too. In a recent formal presentation, Jason Robinson, NYSDEC fish biologist
said, “The collaborative effort will utilize acoustic telemetry with surgically implanted transmitters in the fish that will be monitored by strategically placed bottom-based receivers to track the walleye and other fish species in the study. We have already deployed a few acoustic receivers in walleye this past June, but the majority of New York’s contribution to the Lake Erie study with receivers and tags will begin next year in 2015.” Just like the GPS in your car can tell you where you are, by working in cooperation with other researchers in the Great Lakes Basin, DEC can gather GPS-style data for the fish movements
from acoustic receivers far beyond NY waters. Robinson adds, “Previous inter-state jaw tagging studies have verified the annual eastward migration of west basin walleye into the east basin contributes to the summer walleye fishery in NY. The arrival of west basin walleye may buffer our relatively smaller east basin walleye stocks from fishing pressure. By using acoustic telemetry in cooperation with other investigators we will develop an improved understanding of the periods when walleye spawning stocks are mixed (or separate) and help identify when individual walleye populations are vulnerable to exploitation.”
Hand Warmer Gifts For some reason this hunting season, I had cold hands and started to search how to keep warm. Found these Zippo hand warmers that provide about 10-12 hours of gentle, consistent, odorless heat, which was longer than the disposable warmers, and they’re refillable with simple lighter fluid so they don’t end up in landfills. This hand warmer is all metal and comes with a fleece warming bag, so the heat is gentle on your skin. You can personalize this device as a gift with engraving at zippo.com. Cost is under $20, great for anybody heading into cold weather activities this winter. Avoid the 12 scams of Christmas
The Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York is warning about these twelve common holiday scams and frauds: 1. Luxury products for low prices are most likely counterfeit; and most come to the U.S. from overseas. Handbags, wallets, watches, jewelry and electronic devices are at the top of the list of items counterfeited. BBB advice: If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Buy luxury names from reputable sellers. 2. It’s easy to recreate a website with familiar logos. Shoppers need to watch for red flags such as lack of security on a URL, http instead of https, lack of contact information and asking for payment by wire or money card. BBB advice: When shopping on sites that are not household names, checkout the business with BBB before you buy. Always look for BBB seal when shopping online and click on the seal to confirm it is legitimate. 3. There are many charities that need help. Be sure your generosity is going to the right places. Scammers can easily set up charities with similar sounding names and fancy looking sites. BBB advice: Always re-
search a charity with the BBB Charity Review before you give. Charity Review assists local charities to demonstrate their transparency to the public. 4. You may have good credit, but scammers hunt for ways to steal your financial information. Skimming is a common theft that spikes during the holidays. It steals your credit card information. It can happen when a clerk either swipes the card twice to steal money out of the register, saves your card number to use later or a third party card reading device is installed in the card swiping terminal. BBB advice: Keep your cards close by, out of view and never gone for too long while making a transaction. Make sure to check your financial statements weekly or even daily if possible. Don’t wait for paper statements. The faster you catch a suspicious charge, the better off you’ll be. Contact your financial institution immediately for help. 5. A letter from Santa addressed directly to your child is likely to make them light up. However, be sure the source is legitimate before giving up your data and leaving you at risk for identity theft. BBB advice: Check privacy policies before entering your

If you don’t know and trust the sender - beware. BBB advice: Don’t click on an email from a name you don’t recognize. Deleting is your best bet if you have any doubt. 7. Every year, holiday shoppers fight over the “must have” toy or gadget of the season. When the item is sold out in stores, you can often find it online for a much steeper price. The problem is that some sellers will gladly take your money but you’ll never receive your gift. BBB advice: Shop locally on Craigslist and conduct the transaction in person—never wire money. When purchasing items on auctions like eBay, research the seller and always listen to your doubts if the deal does not sound legitimate. 8. While you’re struggling at the mall with bags of presents, identity thieves see an opportunity to steal your wallet and debit or credit card numbers. ID thieves are also hard at work trying to steal your identity online. BBB advice: Don’t lose track of your wallet. Know where your credit and debit cards are at all times and cover the keypad when entering your PIN while purchasing items or getting money from the ATM. Always check the security of your online purchases. 9. Scammers take advantage of the season with fake email shipping notifications. They pose as FedEx, UPS or the Postal Service. When you click on the file, you find that it isn’t
a tracking notification after all. It’s really a virus that will download to your computer. Scammers claim the attached virus is the receipt you need to collect your package. BBB advice: never click on links in unsolicited email. Keep track of all online purchases as a reference to check against emails sent to your account. Stick to trusted sites. 10. Public Wi-Fi is convenient, but risky. Never turn off your firewall, and make sure your antivirus software is current. BBB advice: Scammers are after your money and/or identity. Don’t use your social media and bank accounts on public Wi-Fi. 11. Vacation booking online is the way for many. Before booking, make sure you are using a reputable, verified website. BBB advice: If the price for airfare, rental car or hotel sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Be wary of unrealistic prices and deals. 12. Beware of who is on the other end of the phone. Whether it’s scammers posing as a stranded grandchild or as the IRS, be wary of unfamiliar numbers on your caller ID or people who you don’t know. BBB advice: The IRS will NEVER contact you over the phone. If you get what you think is a scam call, don’t disclose too much information. BBB advises that the grandparent not disclose any information before confirming that it really is their grandchild. Also, ask a personal question, to confirm their identity is to ask a simple question that the grandchild would know.

Alzheimer's men's support group The challenge of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia may feel overwhelming, confusing and depressing. There are ways to overcome those difficulties and learn from others who’ve “walked the walk”. Spouses, sons, brothers and other male care partners of those with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias get together to share ideas for overcoming the challenges of loving someone who has dementia. Those ideas
can be simple tips like juggling laundry and cooking, or more complex such as coping with aggressive behavior. The Alzheimer’s Association WNY Chapter oversees a support group for men, which meets on the first Monday of every month at 7 p.m. at Elderwood Village at Williamsville (5271 Main Street). The next gathering is scheduled for Jan. 5, 2015. More information is available by calling the Chapter at 1.800.272.3900.

Historical Society honors local couple By Arvilla Pritchard NEWS CORRESPONDENT
If you haven’t checked out the Main Street window of the New Albion/Cattaraugus Area Historical Society, you really need to do so before it’s dismantled and packed away. It features a wedding dress and a WWII Private First Class Army jacket. Although not so unusual in themselves, these particular articles of clothing were worn by former residents Bob and Dawn Weishan at the time of their Dec. 1, 1945 wedding.
Both the elder Weishans are gone now, Dawn just a few months ago (remember that joyous funeral followed by fireworks?), and Bob, a few years earlier. But few Town of New Albion residents managed to weave themselves so firmly into the fabric of their community as those two did. How fitting, then, that their wedding outfits went on display Dec. 1, 2014, on what would have been their 69th anniversary. Although neither Dawn nor Bob lived to celebrate that milestone, memories of their zest for
life, their many civic contributions and their abiding love of family, live on. Both were active in local organizations, particularly the Cattaraugus Area Volunteer Fire Department and its Women’s Auxiliary. Also, Dawn had a beautiful voice, and Sundays usually found her in the Cattaraugus Methodist Church choir loft, blending her talent with that of other gifted church members to enrich the weekly services. She was, by every measure, a dedicated and hard-working church member. The Private First Class U.S.

Army jacket in the museum window was worn by Robert Weishan at the time of his honorable discharge. He served his country for nearly two years during World War II, putting in over 15 months in Europe, where he was assigned to the 7th Engineers Corps of the 5th Infantry Division of the 3rd Army. He won four battle stars, as well as the Good Conduct Medal and his Overseas Ribbon. As a member of the Engineers Corps, he and his buddies were tasked with getting the troops across the many rivers crisscrossing their route into central Germany, and finally Berlin. The German soldiers, in retreat, had blown up every bridge they might have used. An excerpt from one of his letters home describes how harrowing those crossings were: “Finally we crossed the Moselle River for the last time, and then came to the Rhine. It was nine hundred feet across and that’s a long ways in an assault boat. [We] Engineers would take ten Infantrymen across and then have to row the boat back for more. It got pretty rough at the last end.” Dawn’s classic white wedding
gown and Bob’s regulation U.S. Army uniform were discovered after her death, as their children sorted through the keepsakes and treasures of two lifetimes. Daughter-in-law Eileen (Mike) Weishan laughingly said, “Mom saved everything!” In a funny little side-note, a (saved) sales slip from Jamestown’s Bigelow’s “Big” Department Store revealed that the young bride-to-be paid the tidy sum of $45.06 for her wedding finery. The receipt also showed that she made this momentous purchase just two weeks before the wedding, and additionally, that she could have saved almost a third of the purchase price, had she not included the veil, which cost $15.98 all by itself! By Dawn’s own account (in a little wedding book given to the

young couple by Rev. and Mrs. Delbert Jolley), the courtship was definitely of the whirlwind variety. Bob proposed, and she accepted (ever so appropriately) in nearby Lover’s Lane. At that point, he had been out of the army only about two-anda-half weeks. After the wedding, the young couple moved in with Dawn’s grandmother, Cora Town, who raised her granddaughter after the untimely death of her mother.) Soon, however, the young couple got busy building their own home just outside of Cattaraugus, on Otto Road. That’s where they raised their two sons, Michael and Peter, and where they spent the remainder of their days, being good citizens, good neighbors, good friends — and superlative gardeners.

Gowanda Middle School promotes wellness, enters contest
By HOLLY LAWTON NEWS CORRESPONDENT
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of adolescents 12-19 years old who were obese increased from 5 percent in 1980 to nearly 21 percent in 2012. More than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese in 2012. Gowanda Middle School personnel are trying to reverse that trend with a concerted effort on implementing new wellness policies that promote healthier lifestyles, not just for students but for staff as well. There is an emphasis on increasing the amount of physical activity and providing food choices that are healthier. “It’s a whole shift in the entire culture at the school, Principal Dave Smith noted. “We’re really on the cuttingedge of trying to change the climate. In conjunction with those changes, Teaching Assistant Tracey Hice suggested that the school enter a nationwide competition, called #BeTheNextUni, that NutriBullet is conducting to drive health awareness and action among school children across the country. The company, which produces the NutriBullet countertop nutrition extractor, is offering five winning schools $10,000 worth of product, produce and informational tools to run a 90-day program educating students on the benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables. NutriBullet launched the program in the fall of 2013 at University High School (Uni High) in Los Angeles, providing fresh produce and the
necessary tools so that each student could start their day with a healthy, nutrient-rich smoothie for three consecutive months. According to company representatives, “NutriBullet’s mission was to convey to students the importance of a healthy breakfast and reducing their intake of processed foods, since research undeniably shows that children who eat breakfast are more likely to meet their nutritional needs, participate more in class, score higher on tests and have fewer sick days. NutriBullet recently released a documentary called “The Uni Project that chronicles the Los Angeles program. NutriBullet officials remarked, “The results were startling, showing measurable clinical changes in the students’ health and overall healthy lifestyle transformations. In addition to decreased waist sizes and lower cholesterol levels, student participants reported feeling health-
ier in general, with results that included increased energy and mental focus, clearer skin and improved sleep. As part of their application to be the next Uni High, Gowanda Middle School submitted a video highlighting some of the steps the school has taken to promote a healthy diet and lifestyle. The video can be seen on the Gowanda News Facebook page or Web site or at: http://youtube.com/ watch?feature=youtube&v=5J1M3HgcOs. The video features Smith, Superintendent James Klubek, Athletic Director Kim Schon, Food Services Director Jason Whipple, and , of course, Gowanda Middle School students. Smith said Dean of Students Dan Cassidy has been instrumental in initiating changes as well. The Spark 25-day Physical Challenge is a program that has been embraced by students and staff alike. Smith shared that 85 percent of the staff and 139 students have
at the school cafeteria. Students are being introduced to foods that may be new to them, like the vegetable okra or kiwi fruit. The submarine sandwiches are now served on a wholegrain roll. The lasagna is made with wholegrain pasta and low-fat, skim-milk cheeses. Whipple says that they have shifted to a scratch method of cooking. Sauces are lowsodium and vegetables are steamed. He noted that a particular favorite with the kids is the General Tso’s stir fry with brown rice. “The new regulations are tough, but we’ve embraced them 100 percent, Whipple submitted. “It’s been a huge success. Lunch purchases have increased. Smith added, “We’re excited because we’ve taken a real step forward with lunches to be healthy. In addition, both Smith and Whipple are excited about the prospect of winning $10,000 in fresh produce, a NutriBullet Blast bar and classroom tools. “Our goal is a whole culture shift in the school and in the community, providing methods to improve wellness, Whipple observed. “The NutriBullet program would be another aspect for kids to take away both for school and life as well. NutriBullet is encouraging community members to rally behind their local schools by Tweeting their support using the hashtag #BeTheNextUni. Contest winners will be announced in January 2015. Whipple stated that Gowanda is hoping to apply for the Healthier U.S. School Challenge award in January as well.

SURPRISE VISIT – From left, Food Services Director Jason Whipple and Gowanda Middle School Principal Dave Smith join 7th graders Marleah Stevens, Layla Warrior, Mcenzie Henhawk and Alyla White in the cafeteria as they sample some of the healthy creations served up by Whipple and his staff. committed to being active for at least 30 minutes a day, 25 days out of every 30. They are keeping logs documenting their activity. Noting the importance of the faculty serving as role models for the students, Smith commented that he has been exercising for over two hours a day. He stated that he has seen dramatic results, dropping significant weight and lowering his sugar count. Klubek teased that people have been noticing that Smith is taking on the appearance of a hunk. A teacher walking program has been established, and students have a morning walking program every other day. On alternating days, the school offers A.M. Hoops with Mr. Utley. Schon said the school offers other avenues for physical activity through 5th and 6th grade intramurals in the spring and multicultural social dancing as an evening family activity.

MY FAVORITE SUBJECT – Hungry kids line up for Gowanda Middle School’s healthier cafeteria options. School officials say lunch purchases have increased since the changes were implemented.
Additionally, Gowanda Central is a bike-friendly school, providing racks for students who ride their bicycles to school. Smith explained that his staff has received training in incorporating physical activity in the classroom as well. The video shows Hice leading students in Mrs. Ackley’s English Language Arts class in doing desk push-ups as they learn their vocabulary words. Adopting a healthier diet is another major component of the school’s wellness policy. As Schon points out in the video, gone are the days of selling candy bars for fund-raisers. According to the athletic director, the school policy now calls for 100 percent healthy fund-raisers and a minimum of 50 percent healthy options at concession stands and vending machines. Stations for filling water bottles are available on campus as well. The biggest changes, however, can be seen in the menu
