Game-breaking Gilbert leads Black Knights to win over Catt./LV By Joe Sarro

SPORTS REPORTER

It was midway through the fourth quarter when one of the Cattaraugus/Little Valley coaches slammed his clipboard on the sidelines while Kraig Gilbert got up from one of his many long runs and returned to the huddle. That was the gist of Silver Creek’s 28-7 win over the Timberwolves on Friday night. Kraig Gilbert was unstoppable on the ground in his team’s win. The senior showed his flashy moves and even sometimes looked like he was the strongest man on the field when he shoved would-be tacklers out of his path. He rushed for 220 yards and racked up three scores for his team. He ended his night with an average of 11 yards a carry. “Kraig [Gilbert] had a great game,” Silver Creek head coach Sean Helmer said. “He’s always a focus in the game plan. He’s a great back. He has legitimate speed and if you don’t tackle him, he has a chance to break every single run.” Gilbert started his big night on the Black Knights’ first drive. The running back broke a 25-yard run down to the Timberwolves’ 41. Two plays later, Gilbert took a run along the left tackle and 15 yards into the end zone to open the scoring. In the second quarter, Gilbert took a handoff 45 yards to the house to make it a 21-7 game. “Gilbert can carry the ball quite a bit and happens to get stronger as the game goes,” Helmer said. “He gets some tough yards. If he can see holes

Gowanda sports report: Pair of Panthers finish strong at Alden Invite, football routs Akron By Mark Benton SPORTS REPORTER

• The Gowanda boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams continue to have a fine season. The boys’ team is currently ranked fourth in the Buffalo News small school poll. Matt Kruszka has been the Panthers’ best runner. The sophomore recently placed second at the Alden Bulldog Stampede. Not to be outdone, senior Colleen Steward placed fifth in the Alden Bulldog Stampede for the girls by posting a personal best time of 20:06 for the 5K race. She was also featured as one of the top “runners of the week” in the Buffalo News. Gowanda has also done very well by finishing first and second in two recent quadrangular meets. Top runners besides Steward include: Katelynn Jaroszewski, Lexi Latona, Nina Roman, Kaylynne Heary, Kelsey Eddy, Riley Delpriore, Anna Virtanen, Alyssa Nash and Rachel Evans. Both the boys and girls are now getting ready for the county meet. • The Gowanda Recreation

Gowanda Central School cross-country runner Colleen Steward (far right) placed fifth in the Alden Bulldog Stampede that took place on Saturday, Oct. 11. The senior has had an outstanding career as a long-distance runner for the Panthers in both track and cross-country. Call

Mark Benton at 532-4053 for more information. The first ski date in Sunday, Jan. 4. • The Gowanda Youth Football program is wrapping up another season with the upcoming playoffs. This is the 49th consecutive year that Gowanda has fielded

youth football teams. • The oldest members of the original Gowanda Jet and Packer teams that began play in the fall of 1966 are turning 60 this year. A few of those former players include: Dennis Murphy, Tim Massar, Kevin Hinkley, Steve Boyd,

Gary Korbar, Steve Ewell and Kevin Howard. • The Gateway Park to Zoar Valley has continued to make strides by renovating the Peter Cooper site on Palmer street. The large mountain of fill that was brought in over a year ago has been leveled. More fill will be brought in during the spring of 2015 to level off several other areas. According to project manager Mike Hutchinson, a children’s play structure could be put in place as early as next spring. Softball, Little League baseball and soccer fields are also in the blue print. When completed, Gowanda will have much-needed green space to hold several athletic events for people of all ages. • Upcoming local fall and winter events will include the 42nd Annual Turkey Bowl Touch Football Game that will kickoff at 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning. The game that originated on the corner of Allen and Aldrich streets in 1973, and relocated to the field behind the former Center Street Elementary School in 1976, will be played for the second consecutive year at the George Dispenza Memorial

Field on Broadway Road. • The Gowanda Recreation co-ed basketball program for students in grades 3-6 will begin the first week of December at Academy Place. Depending on the weather, ice skating at St. John Park for all area residents will begin the first week in January. • The Gowanda High School varsity football team defeated Akron 30-6 at Akron on Oct. 17. The schools first played each other in October of 1971 at the same site. Senior Rob Chmiel returned a kickoff for a touchdown that year as the Panthers won 14-12. The following season, Arlen “Casey” White ran several end reverses for long gains and caught at least six passes from quarterback Rudy Rote as the Blue and White defeated the Tigers 25-12 at Hillis Field. Gowanda made it three in a row the following season with a 28-0 whitewashing at Akron. Bill Hoppa and Bruce Bareham ran well behind the line anchored by Mike Mentley and Dick Gernatt. The teams never played again until the Panthers switched divisions in the mid 1990s.

Rod, Gun & Game: Time for tributary trout encounters By Forrest Fisher OUTDOOR COLUMNIST

For the last several weeks, steelhead anglers around Western New York and northern Pennsylvania have been anxiously waiting the first chill of fall weather followed by that first good cold rainstorm. That is what is required to entice our Lake Erie population of steelhead to enter the streams and head upstream. Last weekend, the hardy steelheaders got their wish, except it was more of a Friday overnight monsoon precipitation period, that made for a greater fishing challenge. Fishing with fellow outdoor writer associates Tim Murray, a New York Outdoor News reporter from Corning, Victor Attardo from eastern Pennsylvania and book author fame, and Craig Robbins from Jamestown — who is a video journalist, outdoor columnist and envoy of the Chautauqua County tourism group, we were guided to some of Western New York’s finest steelhead waters on Saturday and Sunday Our local guides were Drew Nisbet from Clarence and Alberto Rey from Fredonia. Nisbet is a precision-thinking fly rod specialist that shared several styles of fly rod and fly choice logic with us for varying water flow conditions to be found fishing any of the fine Chautauqua County tributary stream steelhead choices.

Alberto Rey is an internationally famous wildlife artist and nationally recognized steelhead fishing guide that provided leadership for stream choices, organized our start time, provided a myriad of fishing options and invited us to a very fine shore lunch. Our trio of anglers met each other courtesy of Ms. Pamela Forge, proprietor of a spacious bed and breakfast lodging located at Sunset Bay, where Craig Robbins provided directions to nearby outdoor shops and details for fishing the steelhead waterways of Chautauqua County. We met our guides over a tasty dinner at the Sunset Bay Sportsman’s Restaurant on Allegheny Road near the recently repaved NYSDEC Cattaraugus Creek boat launch. As we filled our tummies with scrumptious roast beef and fish fry choices, the weather outside resembled the South Pacific rainy season. The southern tier area was receiving more than an inch of rain per hour, accompanied by high winds. Not the best fishing conditions. The rain did not affect the confidence of Alberto Rey at all, who is formally educated as a biologist, but is a world class artist and art professor at Fredonia College. Rey smiled and with a tone of high assurance said, “Chautauqua County is great because the streams here allow us several choices and usually, no matter what the weather and rainfall, we can find fish, but of course,

Steelhead fishing guide and internationally renowned wildlife artist, Alberto Rey, shares his colorful fly selection and fishing philosphy. remember, fishing is not always just about catching.” Above the sound of the rain, he made all of us chuckle. Our beach residence received the accompanying sound of the heavy surf and waves when Lake Erie is subject to high winds. Actually, it was exciting. It was spooky, too, in the darkness of night. Our alarms went off at 4:45 a.m. and the black coffee was necessary to get

North Collins volleyball upended by Southwestern By Marquel Slaughter SPORTS REPORTER

North Collins had been waiting for its first match against Southwestern all season long knowing that the division could be on the line. With a hiccup in an earlierseason loss to Falconer, the

Lady Eagles needed to make up ground on an unbeaten Southwestern girls volleyball team. In the end, the Trojans were too much, dropping the Eagles in straight sets on Oct. 15 at North Collins. The two clubs met again on Oct. 21 at Southwestern (13-3 overall, 13-0 in CCAACentral), a Class C team that North Collins (12-2, 10-2) will not have to worry about in the Class D bracket. Results weren’t available at press time. “We want to win the league and then win sectionals, but we knew

that if we wanted a chance to win the league then we had to take a game from Southwestern,” said North Collins coach Doug Burgstahler. “We play them again next weekTuesday. I think we learned a lot about ourselves tonight and a lot about them, so hopefully we can apply those things in our next practices and games.” Sophomore Angela Filkov paced the Eagles offense with 25 assists and her older sister, junior Jasmine Filkov, added 7 kills. Morgan Mathis andArrika Bley each had 8 kills in the loss.

most of us moving, though Robbins used his stage voice to threaten Murray with a bucket of rainwater if he didn’t come down soon at 4:55. Got us all laughing early. Rey and Nisbet explained that the Catt was unfishable due to the heavy rain, so we explored Little Canadaway Creek, Scott Creek, Beaver Creek, Walnut Creek, Canadaway Creek and finally settled on fishing Silver Creek.

It was running slightly turbid, but the 8-inch water clarity was not bad compared to the muddy flow of the other waterways. Rey tied us up with twoegg fly pattern rigs about 10 inches apart, made with size 14 and 16 Orvis scud hooks, touting a tungsten bead head for weight on a 3-foot-long 7-pound test fluorocarbon tippet tied to a very tiny size 10 saltwater swivel, where an indicator float was also placed. We fished for two hours and our guides felt we should have been able to see fish swimming up through the waterfall areas, but there were none, so we moved on. After exploring three additional spots, it was lunchtime. Rey welcomed us to his home and introduced us to his family, where his wife, Janiele, provided a five-course, sitdown lunch. Her pumpkin soup recipe was beyond description. Baked potatoes, salad, select cold cuts, hot baked sausage and a delicious dessert of homemade chocolate chip cookies with a shot-glass of classic tawny port wine, simply made the fishless morning easy to forget. We laughed, joked and shared conversation, and I think we all became friends for life in those 45 minutes. Steelhead fishing with friends can bring out the best in everyone. As guests, we toured Alberto Rey’s art studio and were in awe by the depth of color and 3D-like detail of his work, mostly large, wall-size

paintings of fish — trout and steelhead, first captured by photographs on the stream when an angler fooled the fish and released his catch to live and return to spawn yet another time. Rey helped us to recognize that perhaps that is the greatest gesture, in-kind, that an angler can bestow on his captured prey. We moved on in the afternoon to fish Chautauqua Creek, where more accessible fish were found. While a large assortment of fishing tackle options are open to steelhead anglers, Rey and Nisbet both prefer fly rod tackle and Orvis supported hardware because it is durable and top quality. My all-day use of a 2 3/4-ounce, 9-foot Orvis Access 6-weight fly rod and matching singleaction reel is proof of that. Nisbet says he has also watched 5-by-5-footschools of 10- to 20-pound king salmon heading upstream near his 400-acre family farm on the Catt. Who would have guessed that? Our WNY salmonid and steelhead fishery is world class, so are our local guides. To experience some of the same simple stream fun, consider contacting these top fishing guides in nearby Chautauqua County. Contact Alberto Rey at 716-410-7003 or visit www.albertorey.com. Check your calendar and make some time to discover our unique WNY steelhead resource while the weather is still “colorful.”

PRO FOOTBALL CORNER

FROM the SIDELINES Bills’ Orton getting involved, makes appearance at Doodle Bugs By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR

Having led the Bills to a pair of last-second comeback victories in his first three games under center for them, Kyle Orton has certainly endeared himself to fans in Buffalo of late. He endeared himself to a much younger contingent of fans on Tuesday (Oct. 21). Orton traded in his playbook for a children’s book when he made an appearance at Doodle Bugs! on Red Tail Drive in Orchard Park to read Rosemary Wells’ “Bunny Cakes” to 3and 4-year-olds at the daycare center. The 10th-year NFL veteran has only been in Buffalo for a couple of months since signing as a free agent at the conclusion of training camp, but he’s already immersed himself in the Buffalo community. “Everything has been great [since coming to Buffalo],” Orton said. “Everyone has been great to us. We live in a great neighborhood and have made a

bunch of friends already. “It’s nice being in a small, close-knit community.” Orton and his wife, Bridget, are tied to Doodle Bugs through their daughter Olivia’s enrollment in the program there. Olivia, 3, was among the many children on hand to listen to Orton read Wells’ tale of a grocery store-bound Bunny on a quest to bake a cake. Orton, who grew up enjoying children’s books like “Curious George” and the “Berenstain Bears”, suggested that it was a gratifying experience. “I love being around kids and anything you can do to help kids is great,” he said. “[Doodle Bugs] has been great to us. Coming to Buffalo late, we got Olivia right into school and she loves it here. “Friday afternoons, I come pick her up here with my wife and it’s the best half-hour of my week. So anything I can do to come and help out I’m going to do.” Orton is one of a flurry of Bills that have gotten involved in the Buffalo community of late. Among

Bills QB Kyle Orton, whose 3-year-old daughter Olivia is a student at Doodle Bugs, read to a group of children at the daycare center on Oct. 21. them, center Eric Wood teamed up with Carly’s Club for a Jocktails event a few weeks ago, Keith Rivers appeared at PS 79 in Buffalo in support of the school’s launch of a Fuel Up to Play 60 campaign, and Brandon Spikes chaired the Buffalo Zoo’s ‘Adopt an Animal’ program and appeared at the zoo for a meet and great with fans in September. Additionally, a host of Bills are involved in the

organization’s ticket donation program and were in Niagara Falls for the Bills’ ‘Pinktober’ event earlier this month. “We have a lot of guys on our team that give back to the community and spend a lot of time and effort doing so,” Orton said. “I think all of our players know it’s important and they do a good job with it.” While Orton and the Bills were off on Tuesday, with a visit to the AFC East’s last-

place 1-6 New York Jets on the horizon Sunday (Oct. 26), it was back to the playbook for them on Wednesday. The team eked out a home victory over Minnesota last week when Orton guided the offense on what seemed like an improbable 80-yard drive in the final minutes that was capped off by top pick Sammy Watkins’ game-winning touchdown reception with 1 second left. It was Orton’s second display of late-game heroics since joining the Bills. He led the team on a lastminute drive against Detroit two weeks ago and helped to set up Dan Carpenter’s game-winning 58yard field goal with 4 seconds left. “Hopefully we don’t have to make it a fourthquarter game all the time and we can play better earlier in the game, but the wins have been exciting,” said Orton, who backed up Tony Romo in Dallas the last two seasons. “They’ve been fun. We’ll take them any way we can get them and hopefully we can keep

on doing it.” It’s possible if Orton continues to put up the numbers he has through three games. In leading the Bills to a 2-1 record since taking over for second-year QB EJ Manuel, Orton’s thrown for 890 yards and five touchdowns, numbers that prorate to over 4,500 yards and 25 touchdowns in a 16game season. He’s just grateful to have the opportunity to start again. “I love it here,” Orton said. “I’ve made that known and I think everybody in the organization knows how much I appreciate that they’ve brought me in.” The Bills have a chance to improve to 5-3 when they take on the Jets at 1 p.m. inside MetLife Stadium. The Jets have lost six straight since opening the season with a win. Percy Harvin, who New York traded a conditional pick for last week, will make his Jets debut as a receiver and kick returner. The game will be broadcast on CBS.

DeMarsh earns 100th victory, still has one goal in mind By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Nick DeMarsh took over the struggling women’s soccer team at Buffalo State College a dozen years ago with one goal in mind. “I wanted to win the conference and represent this school on the national level at the NCAAs,” said DeMarsh, a three-time All-SUNYAC player for the Bengals who assisted the men’s program for four years prior to becoming the women’s head coach. That has not happened yet. “So we still have some work to do,” DeMarsh is quick to point out. But the program has come a long way under DeMarsh’s direction. DeMarsh entered this weekend’s homestand with 101 career victories. In the 21 seasons prior to

DeMarsh taking over, the Bengals won 114 games. “I have to give a lot of credit to Jerry Boyes, our athletic director, for allowing me to build the program and build the team,” DeMarsh said. “This was a situation that really needed to be built from the ground up.” DeMarsh was teaching at Native American Magnet school and coaching the Bengals part-time during his first two seasons, before Boyes promoted him to a full-time coaching position. “When you are a part-time coach, you are going to get part-time results,” DeMarsh said. “We really didn’t start winning until I got the job fulltime.” The Bengals have posted winning records in seven of the past 11 seasons, and last year finished second in the SUNYAC. With a very young roster this

season, the Bengals are 6-7-1 and 3-4 in conference play. Buffalo State hosts New Paltz (8-6-2, 2-3-2) at 3 p.m. Friday. A win would solidify the Bengals at sixth place in the SUNYAC standings and keep them out of the play-in round of the postseason tournament. “We want to take it one game at a time, and really, all that matters for us is our next game,” DeMarsh said. Buffalo State hosts defending champion Oneonta at 10 a.m. Saturday and wraps up the regular season Oct. 29 with a non-conference home game against St. John Fisher. When DeMarsh took over the Bengals program he had players who weren’t even starters on their high school teams. DeMarsh, who lives in North Buffalo and is the director of coaching for the Kenmore Soccer Club, has

COURTESY OF BUFFALO STATE ATHLETICS

Nick DeMarsh has 101 career coaching wins. extended his recruiting range throughout the state and into New Jersey – and even has one player on the team from California.

But the Bengals are captained by local recruits in senior Liz Malinowski (Williamsville South) and junior Gabrianna Boldinski (Ken-

more East). “Liz came to us with great experience in terms of highlevel club soccer and has really learned the ropes of college soccer,” DeMarsh said. “She’s a very smart player, a good student, and a good example for our younger players.” Boldinski is “probably the best center defender in the SUNYAC,” DeMarsh said. “She’s an absolute monster of a ball-winner. I could probably player her at any position on the field.” Sophomrore midfielder Katie Shaw (Newfane) has been key contributor for the Bengals this year and is pushing to be a captain next season, DeMarsh said. With 100 wins in his review mirror, DeMarsh has no plans to stop before he reaches his ultimate goal. “I’m pretty stubborn,” he said. “I would never leave the job undone.”

Simonick inducted into Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame By Catherine Miller THE SUN CORRESPONDENT

It’s a good time to be a sports fan in Buffalo. The Pegula family has made more headlines than money recently – and the players on the Bills and Sabres are doing their best to make their owners proud. As Buffalo’s name rises to the top pages of nationwide sports news outlets, the newest group of local sports honorees were inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame on Oct 16 – and one of the inductees was the Old First Ward’s Robert “Rip” Simonick. By many measures, Rip Simonick has led a fairly basic life. He grew up in the Old First Ward amidst a great group of family and friends and attended Bishop Timon High School. He married the

love of his life, MaryAnn “Maize” McGuire, a Mount Mercy Academy alumni. He took a job just a few blocks away from his childhood home and has worked for the same company for the past 44 years, presently living about a half-hour from his original place of birth. Pretty standard by most counts. So why, then, when you ask a man like former Sabre Rob Ray to tell you one thing about Simonick, he just throws his hands up in the air and tells you that it’s impossible to say just one thing? Simonick doesn’t work for just any company. Simonick, known to many, is the head equipment manager of the Buffalo Sabres. He has designed specialized gear for players when they were in need, learned players’ preferences on how they liked their skates sharpened, and when equipment

was all set and they just needed someone to talk to – Simonick was there. What you may not realize is that Simonick has been with the Sabres since day one – and has never left – becoming the most skilled and tenured equipment manager in the league. He was there for the ups – like his favorite seasons in 1975 and 1999 – and he refuses to talk about the lows of the “no goal” days. Rip’s knowledge and expertise in the NHL goes well beyond his title as head equipment manager for the Sabres. “Rip is just a tremendous guy,” said Rob Ray of the man he introduced at the awards banquet for the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. “Everybody in the NHL franchise knows him and everyone respects him. He is the father of the fran-

chise.” Ray continued to share personal thoughts on his admiration for the man that knew exactly what equipment Ray needed to play and the words he needed to hear before heading onto the ice. “We were rookies together,” stated Gilbert Perreault, who took center ice in 1970 as Rip stood behind the scenes making sure the players had all they needed to play in the Sabres’ inaugural season, “Rip was a great guy then, and he’s a great guy now.” Other hockey names mimicked the views of Ray and Perreault. Ray rattled off dozens of other NHL names that look up to Simonick, the renowned equipment guru. Ice manager Bob Strianese and Digger Kennedy, father of NHL player Tim Kennedy, both spoke highly of their friendship with Si-

monick. Much of Simonick’s family still lives in the Old First Ward, and many attended the GBSHOF awards dinner, sharing similar thoughts on the greatness of Simonick. He had more family and friends attend the awards dinner than any other inductee. Simonick never stepped out on a professional field in uniform, never scored the winning goal and was never nominated as an MVP. Still, his name is known in the sports industry better than most and for more decades than many, and he is the only member of the NHL franchise to work from day one to today. Many NHLers state that it’s Simonick’s personality that makes him unique. In addition to his equipment expertise, it is his ability to listen when players need listening to that endears him

to so many. And if you ask Simonick – he believes he’s important to the game on a very basic level. “Hey, you can’t play the game without equipment,” Simonick said with a smile. Whether talking about hockey or life in general, Simonick is correct – and he has definitely brought forth the right equipment to help bring out the best in our players from the days of the French Connection, to the seasons when Ray and Brad May battled in corners with opposing players, to the present-day Pegula era. With everything that he has given to the game of hockey, there is one thing that he would like to get from it in return, and that is to see Lord Stanley’s Cup in Buffalo. But for now, he’s content to join a host of great names in the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame.

HALLOWEEN PARTY

October marks the 140th anniversary of the opening of the Buffalo & Jamestown Railroad station in Gowanda. Although the first train crossed the bridge over Cattaraugus Creek a week earlier, the formal opening of the road was set for Oct. 24. A grand excursion from Buffalo to Gowanda featured a train with seven passenger cars and one baggage car. Approximately 500 people were on the train, nearly a third of those present for the celebration. Railroad

company officers and elected officials from Buffalo attended, including Mayor L. P. Dayton, the Board of Aldermen and the Board of Trade. The new depot, 70 feet long by 22 feet wide, was filled with long dining tables and was “supplied with everything in the shape of eatables that the country afforded.” After dinner several speeches were made. Police Blotter W W W. G O W A N D A N E W S . C O M

Erie County Sheriffs • The Erie County Sheriff’s Office Deputies from the North Collins Substation responded to 265 calls the week of Oct. 13 to 20. • Deputies assisted with three calls in the Village of Gowanda. The Erie County Sheriff’s Office dispatched Gowanda Police to 54 calls during the week.

• A Deputy responded Oct. 13 to a two-car crash at Quaker and Marshfield roads. According to authorities, one person was transported to LakeShore Hospital with a shoulder injury, and another person was transported to ECMC with chest and pelvis injuries. Both have non-life-threaten-

ing injuries. • Houston Williams, 32, of Perrysburg, was stopped Oct. 16 on Brant Road for speeding. According to authorities, a DMV check revealed that Williams had a suspended license for child support. Williams is due in court.

New York State Police • Joseph Coons, 20, of Maltbie Road, Gowanda, was charged Sept. 30 with three counts of first-degree unlawfully dealing with a child and endangering the welfare of a child, following a 10-day investigation. According to authorities, on Sept. 20 Troopers were called to a Gable Street, Dayton, home for a reported unresponsive female. When Troopers and EMS personnel arrived, they found an unresponsive 12-year-old girl. The girl was transported to LakeShore Hospital, where it was discovered that she was intoxicated, and had a reportable B.A.C. of .13 percent. Troopers say that the investigation revealed that the girl, and two other juveniles, had been with Coons and that he had

supplied them alcohol. Coons is due in Dayton Town Court. • Lacie Richter, 21, of Little Genesee, was charged Oct. 5 with unlawful possession of marijuana after a traffic stop on Brant-Reservation Road in Irving for a loud exhaust. According to authorities, Richter was found with a pipe containing marijuana and two plastic baggies containing 17 grams of marijuana. Richter is due in Collins Town Court. • Kevin Stafford, 23, of Confederacy Drive, Irving, was charged Oct. 15 with offering a false written statement, following a two-week investigation. According to authorities, on Sept. 27 Troopers got a report of a possible stolen truck from

Stafford’s mother. The truck was located by his mother and an SNI Marshal on a gravel access road off Burning Springs Road. It had been involved in an accident and was disabled. Troopers responded to the scene and removed the vehicle to the Collins Barracks, where a crime scene tech processed it. Stafford allegedly had the truck and said he parked it at a Hawk Meadows home that night. Troopers say the investigation revealed that after a party, Stafford and a friend took the truck “joy riding,” before leaving it on the gravel road damaged. Stafford is due in Collins Town Court.
