Gabel pleased with Panthers’ first playoff season in 7 years By Joe Sarro
SPORTS REPORTER
There’s an expression that says “all good things must come to an end.” That’s the case for the Gowanda football team. Playing without their two leading rushers on
Friday night (Oct. 24), the Panthers dropped their quarterfinal playoff game to the Silver Creek Black Knights, 32-12, end their season. Both Seth Halftown and Jon McCarthy were out of the lineup. A broken collarbone knocked Halftown out in the first quarter and McCarthy had a devastating injury in which he tore his ACL during the walkthrough at practice one week prior to the game. Head coach Sean Gabel said the injuries definitely hurt the team, but Gabel
said that helped give another guy the opportunity to step up and be a leader. “You’re removing guys that can get six or seven yards a pop and that really loses your momentum,” Gabel said. “It takes a leg off of one of your tables, but we didn’t quit after moving some guys around and we stayed together which is the most important.” After the playoff loss, Gabel told his players to hold their heads up high because of all their accomplishments throughout the
season. The Panthers started out in a hole after losing their first two games, but the team showed heart and battled back to earn its first playoff spot in seven years. “We started the season with Southwestern and had them within one point and the following game, we only lost by two scores so we made a game out of it after giving up about 700 yards rushing in our first two,” Gabel said.

When it comes to the game of football, injuries happen all the time. They’re just part of the game. Sometimes, an injury can affect a player’s mindset negatively. When it comes to Silver Creek running back Kraig Gilbert, injuries are just another motivation factor. The senior rushed for 1,350 yards and accounted for 18 touchdowns in his final season. He’s helped the team earn a 7-1 record and now a spot in the Class C semifinal game, which will be played Oct. 31 at Maple Grove. All the success didn’t come easy for the speedster, though. Two major injuries caused Gilbert to sit out his past two seasons. Gilbert broke his fibula and fractured his growth plate in his ankle his first year on junior varsity. Later in his career, Gilbert broke his leg and snapped his fibula again
during the third game of the season against Gowanda. “I had to wear a cast all the way up to my thigh for six months,” Gilbert said. “I pretty much had to learn how to walk and run again because I forgot how.” Even though the injury frustrated him, Gilbert was motivated to get back on the field to help his team and because he loved the game so much. The bond he has with his teammates was something he could just not walk away from. “Yeah, it’s annoying because I had really bad luck with that stuff,” Gilbert said. “I have so much fun playing and the connection you have with your teammates is something you can never have anywhere else.” Gilbert always had trouble staying injury-free because of his small size. When he first tried football in seventh grade, Gilbert said he was never really as excited about the game as he is now because he was scared to get hit. The feeling of always getting hurt affected Gilbert’s confidence. When he moved to halfback, Gilbert knew the position was just right for him.

The history of the gridiron in Gowanda By Mark Benton
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT
The Gowanda High School football program has witnessed its share of wins and losses over the past 115 years of playing the sport. And all of that local gridiron action has taken place on two separate fields located within the village. Gowanda High School's original field was located at St. John Park well before there were trees, a play structure, basketball court and picnic pavilion that now occupy the area. The playing field was only 80 yards long. However, both endzones were the required 10 yards each and abutted up against St. John and College streets. After an opposing team scored, they would kickoff from the 20 instead of the 40-yard line to make up the difference.

Gowanda High School Coach Howard Hillis speaks to his players at halftime of a Varsity Football game during the 1947 season. The location of this 67-year-old photo was behind the current visiting bleacher section at Hillis Field. The Gowanda High School won the Southwestern Conference Football Championship that season.
The Blue and White would dress at their school located on Center Street that is now home to Academy Place, and run down College Street in their cleats before each contest began. Bleachers were limited and most spectators just stood along the sidelines during the games. There was also a makeshift cinder track that surrounded the football field and cut through both endzones. The school purchased land on the corner ofAldrich and North Water streets in the mid-1930s and teams have been playing at that site ever since. That field was dubbed the Gowanda Athletic Field until it was dedicated to the school's longtime coach, Howard Hillis, before the opening kickoff of the 1968 season. Unfortunately, over time, the football playing surfaces at both St. John Park and Hillis Field have felt the wrath of an
overflowing Thatcher Brook that caused extensive flooding. During the 1938 flood, the wooden goal post nearest St. John Street was bent forward as waters rushed down Aldrich Street. Hillis Field suffered flooding in 1979, 2009 and 2012. The 2009 disaster forced the cancellation of the entire home schedule that fall. The original Gowanda football adult town team played their home games at St. John Park during the 1920s. At halftime, they retreated to a basement of a home at 78 Aldrich Street for warmth and to go over strategy. The Gowanda Boosters football team, also made up of adult men, played their home games at St. John Park during the mid-1930s.

Catt./Little Valley clips Akron in Section VI quarters
By Joe Sarro
SPORTS REPORTER
It was a long ride in for the Akron Tigers, but it was an even longer ride home. The Cattaraugus/Little Valley Timberwolves took
care of business at their home court by knocking off their quarterfinals opponent in straight sets, 25-11, 25-15 and 25-19. Little Valley’s outside hitters had a field day on the court against Akron. The Tigers couldn’t figure out a formula to stop the front line of sophomore Marissa Hamilton, senior Ashlee Harvey and junior Natalie Booth. “We started off much stronger than we finished,” Cattaraugus head coach Joe
Crandall said. “I think we can play better than we did today. Akron doesn’t have a big hitter, but they were able to keep the ball in play.” Hamilton was setting up the other two perfectly in the first set, leading to the Timberwolves jumping out to 17-7 lead. The sophomore finished the night with eight kills along with two aces. Harvey showed her size and lengthiness in the middle, as the Akron hitters couldn’t get anything over the tall senior. The center
finished her night with nine hits, one dig and an ace. Although the two impressed throughout the night, the real MVP was Booth. Every time the junior touched the ball it led to a loud roar of the Timberwolves’ crowd. The outside hitter made an impact at momentum-changing times of the set. Booth helped contribute majorly to two of Catt./Little Valley’s 10-0 runs in the second and third sets. Booth finished with 12 kills, two digs and one ace.
“It was probably her best game in regards to hitting,” Crandall said of Booth. “Our middle is a top notch middle. Harvey really had her way for most of the match. I just don’t think they didn’t match up with us. They [Akron] didn’t have a lot of height.” Even though the Timberwolves won with ease, Crandall was unhappy with the team’s miscues defensively. The coach stated it’s something that needs to be adjusted if the team wants to have a chance at knocking
off its semifinals opponent. Misplays by some of the Timberwolves setters kept the score closer than it really should have been. “There were just some mental errors that we need to work on for our next opponent,” Crandall said. “We’re going to have to play better than we did today though, if we want to move on.” The No. 1 Timberwolves played at 6 p.m. Thursday against No. 5 Wilson in the semifinals. Results weren’t available at press time.

Gilbert’s big second half guides Knights past Gowanda By Joe Sarro
SPORTS REPORTER
Agreat football team battles in all four quarters and that’s what separated the Silver Creek Black Knights from the Gowanda Panthers Friday night (Oct. 24). After being shut down for just 25 yards on nine carries in the first half, Kraig Gilbert picked up the pace and showed the Panthers that he was not going to be stopped in the second half. The back rushed for 223 yards on 29 carries to lift his team to a 32-14 victory at Silver Creek High School in the teams’ Section VI Class C quarterfinal. “We had some timely stops, but only one good drive,” Silver Creek head coach Sean Helmer said. “Going into halftime, we just knew that we had to do what we always do. Sometimes when you get stopped, we kind of second guess some things.” Gilbert opened the scoring with 1:06 left in the second after a shanked Gowanda punt. The senior took the first two carries for 14 yards and followed the
two carries by punching it in the end zone from the 2. He opened up the second half with another rushing touchdown and made it look easy. The back took a handoff along the right tackle and bounced it outside. Gilbert then broke away from the would-be tacklers and took it 23 yards to the house to make it 14-0. Gilbert struck again in the fourth when he took a handoff and showed his patience along the right side. He used his speed again to break away from the the Panthers’secondary and took the run 50 yards to the end zone. The touchdown made it 26-0 Silver Creek and virtually sealed the game for the Knights. The Panthers weren’t giving the Knights much to work with in the first half. Gowanda came out firing and kept the tough rushing attack of Gilbert and ShermanWilliams under control and only trailed 7-0 at the half. The Gowanda defense was showing toughness in controlling the line of scrimmage throughout the first half, but an injury to starting center Devon Clark and Seth Halftown made it difficult for the Panthers to get anything going on the offensive end. “It hurt,” Gowanda head coach Sean Gabel said on the

team’s injuries. “We were getting some momentum, but when you lose your center, your heart and your nucleus, and your star half back, it takes a leg out from under the tables.” Two more touchdowns by Billy Seiders added to the lead on the scoreboard for the Knights and led to the Panthers hanging their heads at the final whistle. With the loss, the Panthers will end their season and any hopes of making a run to Ralph Wilson Stadium, but Gabel is excited and pleased with the way his team battled. “They didn’t quit,” Gabel said. We had to put some guys in different places and had to move some things around, but we stayed together and that’s the most important thing. I’m so proud of them. It just stinks that there has to be a winner and a loser.” Meanwhile, the Black Knights have a tough task ahead of them. Silver Creek will advance to the next round of the Section VI playoffs and face a tough Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake team that is Class C South’s No. 1 seed.
After the second injury, Gilbert was determined to get stronger and heavier to avoid injuries. Gilbert devoted the entire 2013 summer to working out and joining football camps. After the summer, the running back gained 15 pounds and grew an extra three inches. Throughout the summer, Gilbert attended three camps to help improve his game. “I knew that once the doctor cleared me, I had to get stronger,” Gilbert said. “It was a busy summer. I breathed, slept and dreamt football 24/7. I went to the Sirianni Football camp, a camp hosted by the Buffalo Bills and the Jim Kelly Football Camp. It was a great experience.” Gilbert wanted to model his game after Adrian Peterson, his favorite player. After watching the Vikings star earn MVP honors in
If winds are strong, it makes deer nervous because they can’t depend on their sense of smell. They tend to move around less and stay away from open areas. You need to know where deer like to hide when the wind blows. Try low-lying areas that are heavily forested or thick with brush. These areas act as windbreaks, giving them a sense of security. A good place to look is where streams flow around and through fields or forests. Hunt the downwind side while carefully watching for hidden or bedded deer. Another thing you can do is a deer drive through the area. Have one hunter set up downwind, while others start at the far side. Between the noise and human odor, deer should make themselves visible to the downwind hunter.

Gilbert said he loved his will to win and his humbleness towards the game. “When I would watch [Peterson] run, he impressed,” Gilbert said on Peterson’s style. “I had no idea how he broke some tackles. His burst of power and speed is amazing. With everything that’s going on with him, it’s depressing because I really wanted to see him play.” With the success Gilbert is having during his senior season, he’s definitely thinking about playing in college. Gilbert says he’s been getting highlight packages together to hopefully get an opportunity to play at the next level. “Once the season ends, I’m going to start looking more into it, but for now we need to take care of business for this season,” Gilbert said.

"Panthers" played Southwestern to a scoreless tie under the newly installed lights. Besides the high school football teams (varsity and junior varsity), Gowanda's semi-pro team, nicknamed the Tigers (1946-1950), used the Gowanda Athletic Field for their home games that included the Western New York Conference championship win over North Tonawanda in 1948.
The local youth football program that began organized play in 1966 has also used Hillis Field as their home base. So for the last 115 years, two locations in Gowanda have welcomed high school, semi-pro, town teams and youth football. Many championships have been secured at both sites and provided weekend entertainment for thousands of fans in the Gowanda area.

Although it wasn’t the way the Panthers wanted to go out in 2014, the football program is vastly improving from its winless season just two years ago. “It was a tough season, but our team showed the urge to bounce back,” Gabel said. “We never quit and that’s what this season was all about.”

THE COLLEGE UB women clinch regular season MAC championship ••• Russell Cicerone was named MAC men’s soccer player of the week after leading UB to two wins last week. Cicerone, a sophomore who starred for the local FC Buffalo squad last summer, had two goals and two assists in a 4-0 win over St. Bonaventure and netted both goals in a win over Northern Illinois. He currently ranks second in the MAC with 10 goals and 23 points. The Bulls (5-8-2, 1-02) play a non-conference
game at West Virginia this weekend. ••• The Buffalo State women’s soccer team picked up a win over New Paltz and a draw against defending SUNYAC champion Oneonta to claim the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament. Gabrianna Boldinski (Kenmore East) had an assist in the 2-1 win over New Paltz. The Bengals will play at Fredonia on Saturday in the quarterfinals. Fredonia won 1-0 at Buffalo State on Oct. 4.

Courtney Mann had a special feeling about the University at Buffalo women’s soccer team all the way back in preseason training. She turned out to be right. UB clinched the MidAmerican Conference regular season championship last weekend with a 2-0 victory over Miami (Ohio). Mann, a Frontier graduate and fourth-year starter in the midfield, was one of eight seniors honored on the field at UB Stadium prior to the game. “What a tremendous accomplishment for the girls,” UB coach Shawn Burke said. “I am so
proud of their effort and to clinch against one of the top teams in the MAC says a lot about our team.” The Bulls (12-2-3, 8-0-2 MAC) will look to finish unbeaten in conference play for the first time ever when they host Akron on Thursday (Oct. 30). UB will enter the MAC championship tournament as the No. 1 seed and host a quarterfinal game Sunday at UB Stadium. Riding a nine-game unbeaten streak, UB has also jumped up to 47th in the NCAA Ratings Percentage Index, a high watermark for the program. “Our current RPI ranking is recognition for all their hard work and dedication to attain our ultimate goal of an NCAA
Tournament appearance,” Burke said. UB last won a MAC regular season title in 2000 but has never won the MAC tournament or qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Burke is in his first season as UB’s head coach after five seasons as an assistant. When Burke first joined the UB program after two years on the men’s staff at Canisius, he made recruiting Mann one of his first priorities. Mann, one of the Bulls senior captains, has provided steady leadership throughout the season. “In eight years of coaching in college, she is one of the best athletes I’ve worked with,” Burke said. “She literally never takes a day off. Not in
training, or in games. For the past four years, one centerpiece has been her being in that lineup every day.” Other locals on the UB roster included sophomore defender Rachel Cook (Williamsville South) and senior goalkeeper Sarah Moore (Orchard Park). Freshman goalkeeper Laura Dougall has a goals-against average of 0.36, a .915 saver percentage and 11 shutouts, ranking first in the MAC and in the top five nationally in all three categories. Sophomore Katie Roberts leads the MAC with 10 goals and 22 points. Celina Carrero has six goals, including three game-winners, and 17 points.

Bulls fall in Wood’s first game as head coach By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
Changing coaches couldn’t reverse the course of the University at Buffalo’s football season. And neither could a standout game from senior linebacker Adam Redden (St. Francis). After firing head coach
Jeff Quinn and promoting offensive coordinator Alex Wood, the Bulls had their worst offensive performance of the season Saturday in a 20-13 home loss to Central Michigan. UB (3-5, 1-3) has now lost three straight in the Mid-American Conference and must win its final four regular season games to become bowl eligible.
The Bulls gained just 38 yards rushing on the day. Running back Anthone Taylor had a season-low 25 yards after coming into the game ranked 10th in the country in rushing yards. “They rendered us to be one-dimensional offensively, and when that happens, it’s tough to win,” Woods said. Redden, who grew up in
Buffalo and Amherst, did his best to keep the Bulls in the game. The senior linebacker had 10 tackles (3.5 for loss), to sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to earn MAC East defensive player of the week honors. Redden created a turnover on his first sack that led to UB’s first touchdown after the Bulls had fallen be-
hind 14-0 in the early going. A third-team all-MAC pick as a junior, Redden is on his way to earning allconference honors again this season. He leads the MAC in tackles for loss with 12 and is second with three forced fumbles. He has 55 tackles this year and a team-high five sacks. Quarterback Joe Licata (Williamsville South)
threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns Saturday. He passed Joe Freedy to move into fourth in school history with 5,994 career passing yards. The Bulls play next Wednesday at Ohio. UB’s remaining home games at both weeknight matchups, Nov. 11 against Akron and Nov. 19 against Kent State.
Bengals lose to Utica, need win this week to regain first place By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
The Buffalo State football team’s NCAA Tournament aspirations took a major hit Saturday with a home loss to Utica. Off to their best start since 1999 and sitting atop the Empire 8 standings for the first time, the Bengals turned the
ball over three times in the 31-21 loss. Buffalo State (5-2, 3-2) now visits nationally-ranked St. John Fisher needing a win to regain first place in the Empire 8 standings. The conference champion automatically qualifies for the NCAA Tournament. Another loss would also likely take the Bengals out of consideration for an at-large
berth. Mike Doherty (Kenmore East) led the Buffalo State offense with five catches for 165 yards and a 40-yard touchdown that gave the Bengals an early 7-0 lead. Utica went up 24-7 by halftime before John Alessandra (Kenmore East) recovered a fumble that led to a Rich Pete touchdown, bringing the Bengals within
10 points. Quarterback Kyle Hoppy (Orchard Park) fumbled on Buffalo State’s next possession, however, and Utica would take advantage of the opportunity to push its lead up to 31-14. Dan Serignese relieved Hoppy at quarterback in the fourth quarter and connected with Doherty on a 50-yard gain before finding Ryan
Carney (Olean) for an 8-yard touchdown pass that brought the Bengals within 31-21 with 7:16 remaining. But Buffalo State couldn’t get any closer, and in the process, gave up pole position in the Empire 8 title race. St. John Fisher, coached by Lockport native Paul Vosburgh, is coming off a 61-0 win over Alfred State. James Chambers (Lockport) scored
his third touchdown of the season in the win, and Sammy Hasan (Williamsville South) recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score. The Cardinals are ranked 15th in the latest D3football. com poll. Buffalo State is no longer receiving any votes after getting top 25 consideration the past two weeks.
