Cattaraugus-Little Valley claims Class C2 crown

DAN HICKLING

A joyous Hannah Powers of Catt/Little Valley/Ellicottville jumps into the arms of teammate Ashlee Harvey after the T-Wolves captured the Section VI C2 volleyball crown at Lockport High School on Monday. Down two games to none, the T-Wolves rallied to take a 3-2 victory.

By Joe Sarro

SPORTS REPORTER

After her team fell in trouble early against Falconer, Ashlee Harvey knew that this wasn’t going to be

her last volleyball game in a Timberwolves uniform. Harvey ended up leading her team to three consecutive victories to help Cattaraugus-Little Valley overcome a 2-0 deficit and top Falconer in the Class C2 championship game Monday night (Nov. 3), 22-25, 22-25, 2516, 25-18 and 25-20. Harvey was a huge force in Monday’s clash. Harvey had 25 kills along with three blocks on the day. It seemed

like Marissa Hamilton, who had 22 kills, was trying to get the ball to Harvey all night. The entire offense focused around the tall center. “I know she came up with a couple of good blocks when we needed it,” Little Valley head coach Joe Crandall said. “I thought both of our middles played well. I thought we relied mainly on it.” After putting up four kills in the first set, Harvey owned

the Falcons on the front end for the rest of the game. No one was able to block the lengthy middle. The win didn’t come easy for the Timberwolves, though. Little Valley had to over come adversity after dropping the first two games to the Falcons. Miscommunication and mistakes cost the Timberwolves any shot of taking the first game and the inability to return a serve cost them the second.

“When we beat them earlier in the season, we usually only beat them by five, six or seven points,” Crandall said. “We eliminated the long runs that they had. Meanwhile, we got caught in a couple of rotations, but we played our way out of it. We stepped up when we needed to.” T-Wolves libero Hannah Powers chipped in 11 digs while Nicole Benz had 26 assists. Falconer’s Hanna Hollahan

and Bayleigh Carter were frustrating Catt.-Little Valley after they both combined for 10 kills in the first two games. Nothing was getting past Hollahan, either, as she racked up eight blocks on the night. Abbey Courtney also put up 10 kills and 13 digs for her team and Kayla Fish put up 21 assists for her club.

Williams another in long Gowanda spikers line of standout brothers enjoy improved year By Joe Sarro

SPORTS REPORTER

Sherman Williams is one of many from the Williams family that ran rock for the Silver Creek Black Knights. Williams will be the last of the brothers to dress in the silver and black. Even though he may not be as flashy as some of his other siblings, he brings power and strength to the Williams name. The senior ran for 372 yards and four touchdowns in the 2014 season, but his expertise came on the defensive side of the ball, where he led the team in tackles with 39.5, four of which went for a loss. The linebacker was a physical force and gave opposing offenses fits.

DAVE DELUCA

Sherman Williams (4) is the last of the Williams brothers to suit up for Silver Creek.

Williams had a careerbest game against John F. Kennedy when he put up 97 yards on 15 carries along with a touchdown. Sherman is the youngest brother of the family behind Jon, Joseph, Zach, Johnny and Zed. Jon and Joseph played on the same teams and Zach, Johnny and Zed joined forces together in their times on the field. The impact Sherman’s brothers made on the field led him to trying the sport. “I just grew up playing the sport,” Williams said. “I always felt comfortable playing after seeing them. My brothers always loved playing and I wanted to follow in their footsteps.”

It was a year of positives for the girls volleyball team from Gowanda High School. Head Coach Ray Logan told his troops to keep their heads up high due to the accomplishments they achieved in 2014. The Panthers vastly improved in terms of competitiveness they brought game-by-game. They finished with a record of 6-11 and picked up a quarterfinal playoff win against East High School before falling

to Falconer in the semifinals. It was a step forward for the program, which won just two games in 2013. “We did a lot better,” Logan said. “Last year, we didn’t win any league games, and this year we won four. The improvement of the talent on the team was a ton.” The play exhibited by his underclassmen impressed Logan and he feels that the team will be stronger next season. Taylor Olson and Da: ‘Di’ Jones led the way in the front row for the Panthers. The two played huge roles in Gownada’s offensive attack. Jones was a playmaker on the court, racking up assists as she set up Olson and hitter Madeline Ackley.

Gowanda sports report: field at St. John Park was renovated By Mark Benton

SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

A follow up to last week’s History of Gowanda Football article that took a look back at the games played on St. John Park prior to 1940 has uncovered more research at the site. In May of 1941, the old football field at St. John Park underwent a renovation. A half ton of fertilizer was laid down and 250 pounds of grass seed, 32 hard maple trees and 200 barberry shrubs were planted. The area that is surrounded by College, St. John and Aldrich streets, plus Carpenter Terrace, was truly transformed into a park.

Football games had then moved to the corner of Aldrich and North Water streets that is now called Hillis Field. The new Gowanda High School Athletic Field took almost three years to complete. The field was dedicated on Saturday, Sept. 21, 1940. After the opening ceremonies that began at 2:15 p.m. were completed, Salamanca defeated the Blue and White by a score of 18-7. Gowanda finished the 1940 season with an overall record of 3 wins and 4 losses. It was the only losing season under coach Howard Hillis since he arrived at Gowanda High in 1936. The following year, Gowanda won their first Southwestern Conference

championship. According to Gowanda High School sports history, the first-ever varsity baseball game was played on Friday, May 2, 1941. Gowanda lost at home to Angola by a score of 5-4. However, further research has now discovered that it was the first high school varsity baseball game since 1926. Gowanda did not field team from 1927 through the 1940 season. The Blue and White finished the 1941 campaign with a record of 1 win and 9 losses. Gowanda volleyball’s season comes to end The Gowanda varsity girls volleyball team defeated

East High in the first round of the Section VI playoffs. However, the lady “spikers” lost to Falconer in the second round and were eliminated. The team’s coach is GCS graduate Ray Logan. Gowanda XC still ranked fourth The Gowanda boys varsity cross country team continues to be ranked fourth in the Western New York small school poll. Ian Warrior was selected as one of the top “Runners of the Week” during the third week of October. Sophomore Matt Kruzska will be looking to return the New York State championship meet on Nov. 8.

Winter sports slated to begin The winter sports season at GCS will begin with pre-season tryouts on Nov. 10. The boys varsity basketball team will host their tip-off tournament on Dec. 4 and 5. Silver Creek has been added to the conference this season. Olean went independent last year but returns this year and will play in the Chautauqua County league. The Panthers will not play the Huskies for the second year in a row. Howard competing in four leagues Longtime K & L bowler Ed Howard is competing in four different leagues this year.

Eagles win first sectional title in 27 years

By Marquel Slaughter SPORTS REPORTER

The race for the CCAA Central division title was one that North Collins could not win after drawing a hiccup in its league schedule before the scheduled matchups between league frontrunner Southwestern. The Eagles were, however, able to use those games for an even larger prize. Coach Dave Burgstahler and his Lady Eagles fell to Southwestern in both regularseason contests and watched Southwestern capture the league title. But they knew all along that their division foe moved up to compete in Class C for the postseason. North Collins, a Class D school, earned the No. 2 seed in the Class D2 bracket and did not have to worry about a Southwestern team — believed to be the toughest Section VI team the Eagles had faced all year — spoiling their plans for a sectional championship. What they learned in those losses to Southwestern helped the Eagles in preparation for their playoff run, which ultimately saw them capture the Section VI Class D2 championship with a comeback victory over top-seeded Panama on Nov. 3 at Jamestown Community College. They recovered from a two-game deficit to win the match, 3-2, earning the program’s first

sectional title since 1987. The Eagles were swept by Southwestern in the first meeting but took the season finale to four games, giving the club high hopes for what was to come in the postseason, concluding in the program’s first sectional title. “We came out, we fought hard, we took a game… we thought it was good preparation for the playoffs,” Burgstahler said about the second meeting against Southwestern, a team that eventually took a game from state power Eden in the C1 title game. “For us, we were happy because they had beat us in three games before. At that time we knew we were mathematically eliminated from winning the league. Even though they’re not in our class for playoffs we still wanted to make a good showing and prepare for playoffs.” Sophomore Angela Filkov set the offense up with 45 assists. Freshman Morgan Mathis recorded 18 kills and senior Arrika Bley put up 12 kills and five blocks. Junior Jasmine Filkov contributed with 11 kills and seven digs while senior Jenna Keppel put down 17 kills and had nine timely blocks up front. Ellicottville has been responsible for eliminating North Collins from the postseason the last two years, including the 2012 sectional championship game, which was the Eagles’ most recent championship game appearance before Monday. The Eagles made the jump back to finals with a win over Forestville in straight sets on Oct. 30. Angela Filkov had 25 assists and five digs in the semifinal win.

With the new playoff setup, the Panthers played their fifth (on the road) and final game of the season at Silver Creek and lost 32-14. Rose (left) and her sisters Angela (4) and Jasmine Filkov helped North Collins win the program’s first sectional championship since 1987. “Preparing for Forestville, we did a lot of stuff on preparing for their middle attacks and stopping and how to deal with their middle blockers,” Burgstahler said at practice the day before the match. “We also know that they have certain positions where they might be weaker passers, so we’ve been practicing on singling those players out and exposing them.” The postseason began with a straight-sets victory over West Valley in the quarterfinals. The Eagles used fast starts to their advantage and even built a 15-2 lead in the third game. Flikov had 30 assists over the course of just three games in setting up her hitters for easy points. Her sister, Jasmine, was everywhere, gathering six kills, 10 digs and three aces. Bley added 12 kills, Keppel

had four digs and freshman Courtney Wilson had six digs in the sweep of West Valley, but the last thing they wanted to do was take a team they’ve defeated before lightly. “We’ve beaten them twice in three. I just know that once you get to playoffs it’s a whole new ball game,” said Burgstahler. “People get nervous. We’re a young team. Who knows what can happen. Each team wants to start out big early. You want to get to five first, you want to get to 10 first, and that’s what we were doing.” Emily Violanti is the third of three seniors leading a young sectional champion North Collins squad. Williams credits brother for maturation on field “Williams” from page B1 Williams said he could have never been the player that he was without his brother Zach. He praised his sibling, saying that he had a huge impact on his game. Williams said he loved the way Zach motivates him and helps him adjust his game so that he can have an effect on the field. “He helped me work out and really focused on my quickness. Him helping my feet get quicker really helped me a lot this year,” Williams said. “We did a lot of stuff with the ladder

to improve my footwork as well.” Zach is a 2011 graduate of Silver Creek, where he played running back and middle linebacker, just like Sherman. Williams said his brother was known as a “tough runner” and a great player. “I’m not just saying this because he is my brother, but he is the best football player I’ve ever seen play,” Williams said. “I’m glad to have him in my life. I don’t know where I’d be now without Zach or my brothers.”

Holmes Elementary students take part in exclusive event Thanks in large part to the NFL’s Fuel Up to Play 60 program and the Buffalo Bills, 30 students from Holmes Elementary School were able to connect with Bills players at an exclusive Hometown Huddle event to learn about the importance of good nutrition and physical activity. Not only that, they each had their picture taken with wide receiver Sammy Watkins and linebacker Preston Brown and walked away with $100 Wegmans gift cards, apparel, autographs and more. Representatives from the Dairy Council met the students at the school and gave them Fuel Up to Play 60 shirts and Bills hats to wear to the event. A school bus took them to the Wegmans grocery store in Blasdell, where they met with the 14 players who represent the Buffalo Bills Rookie Club. had the chance to move through the store, learning about healthy food groups and shopping with $100

Wegmans gift cards they received and the help of the Bills players. Holmes Elementary School was chosen for the Hometown Huddle with help from Kim Roll, food service director for the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda UFSD, and the Dairy Council. “It was such a cool event. To see these great big Buffalo Bills players and our kids with their grocery bags — these fourth and fifth graders who were learning about nutrition — it was so exciting,” Roll said. “Our kids were so good. I was so proud of them.” In addition to the NFL and the Bills, the Hometown Huddle is supported by American Dairy Association and Dairy Council, and the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County. According to Fuel Up to Play 60, the Hometown Huddle is “a league-wide day of service designed to bring awareness and impact to the issue of youth health and fitness”

and the event “aims to educate local youth on the importance of good nutrition through school meal programs as well as learning to navigate the grocery store.” Fresh fruits and vegetables were a major topic at the Hometown Huddle and are a major focus this year at KenmoreTown of Tonawanda schools. In support of the newly revised wellness policy, which incorporates the 2010 Healthy, HungerFree Kids Act and Smart Snacks in Schools standards, the District has initiated a Fruit and Veggie of the Month program. The purpose of the program is to focus on one fruit and one vegetable each month so students can learn all about the nutritional benefits of, and best way to enjoy, each featured fruit and vegetable. Apples and Brussels sprout were featured in October and strawberries and squash will be featured in November.

Frontier grad Mann, UB looking forward to hosting MAC playoffs By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Courtney Mann is a senior leader on the University at Buffalo women’s soccer team, but even she is barely old enough to remember the last time the Bulls hosted the MidAmerican Conference playoffs. The Frontier High School graduate was 7 years old when the Bulls last won the MAC regular season championship in 2000. “I remember my oldest sister (Lindsey) and my dad (Gary) came to the games,” Mann said.

The Mann family and many others in the local soccer community will be out at UB Stadium this weekend as the Bulls look to augment the best season in school history by qualifying for the NCAA tournament. “It’s kind of surreal,” said sophomore defender Rachel Cook, a Williamsville South graduate. “I’ve grown up in Buffalo and gone to UB camps since I was in elementary and middle school and it’s really neat to be here and be part of such a successful season. Mann was excited by the turnout for UB’s

quarterfinal victory over Toledo on Sunday. “It was really cool, especially seeing the local clubs, clubs that I’ve coached,” she said. “To be a local kid and there being a high-level soccer tournament in Buffalo is huge for the local community.” UB (14-2-3 overall, 9-0-2 MAC) earned the right to host the playoff games by becoming just the third team in MAC history to go unbeaten in regular season play. “And this conference is tough,” coach Shawn Burke said. “In our last game, we played Akron at home and went to overtime and they finished 12th.

“That speaks to the depth of this league and is a huge testament to the girls and the body of work they’ve done to get these results.” UB will ace Ball State in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Friday. The Bulls won the regular season meeting at home on a penalty kick in overtime. The other semifinal between Western Michigan and Northern Illinois is at 7 p.m. Friday, and the championship game is Sunday. Burke is in his firstyear as head coach after five seasons as an assistant. “Burke’s thing when took over was we have the talent here,” Cook

said. “We didn’t need to go get recruits or internationals. We just needed to use what we have.” UB has two all-conference caliber attackers in Katie Roberts and Celina Carrero, and one of the league’s top defenders in Jackie Hall. Freshman goalkeeper Laura Dougall has faced less than five shots in 14 games, and has posted 14 shutouts. She has a 0.37 goalsagainst average, and a .911 save percentage. “She has had an incredible freshman year,” Mann said. “I don’t think anyone can compare. We had a very good goalkeeper last

year, and there was no drop in play.” Last year’s netminder, Ainsley Wheldon, ranks in the top four all-time in all of UB’s major goalkeeping categories. “The greatest thing is these girls have really come together,” Burke said. “There is a reason the results are coming in our favor. “These girls have earned all the accolades they are going to get. It’s been an amazing group. It’s a fun group to be around and when you get a group playing for something bigger than themselves, it’s really special.”

Gowanda’s Timberwolves Logan expects Grudzien gets deer took on Eden in Olson, Jones to with cross bow Class C crossover come back stronger “Champs” from page B1

NEW LAW MAKES A DIFFERENCE – after not being able to pull back a compound bow, Chet Grudzien of Gowanda used a cross bow to shoot this deer and continue hunting archery after giving it up for a number of years.

“We have a very inexperienced group, but I told them to hold their heads up high,” Falconer head coach Amanda Yachetta said postgame. “They worked hard in every set they’ve played this year and we really came together as a team this year. We came out so strong tonight, but Catt.-Little Valley just found a way to win.” The second set was a nightmare in returning serves for the Timberwolves. At one point, the Timberwolves gave up their early lead after surrendering four consecutive aces. “We knew we had to step up and make the plays,” Crandall said. “They’re good servers and we got caught a couple times not moving our feet, but we

worked our way out of it. Believe me, I didn’t throw any pixie dust out there.” Crandall told his players at the break to relax and to play their game, but he said he knew that Catt.-Little Valley had the talent to fight right back. “We were flat for some reason. We just didn’t seem to be moving well right off the bat,” Crandall said. “We’ve played them twice before and we’ve beat them before, but they’ve all been close matches. I just sat down, shut my mouth and let them play their way out of it, which they did.” The Timberwolves took on Eden, which beat Southwestern in the Class C1 final, in the Class C crossover game on Nov. 6. Results weren’t available at press time.

“Volleyball” from page B1 “Da: ‘Di’ will come back even stronger next year,” Logan said. “It will be her third year on varsity. They’re [Olson and Jones] going to be pretty tough next year.” Olson racked up numerous blocks every game along with averaging over seven kills a match. “Taylor [Olson] improved tremendously,” Logan said. “She was able to come down with some key blocks for us in games that changed some of the momentum in the game.” Logan said he is keeping the girls active and practicing for next year by having them join local recreational club leagues. Logan said he wants to try to make volleyball a year-round

sport for the girls so they can compete for a Class C title in 2015. “I have some girls doing some club, some of the girls have already started their lifting program and some of the girls will be playing summer league ball,” Logan said. “After seeing positives from this season and us coming together as a team, I think during this off season we’re going to come together even more and bring even more success to this program.” To cap off the year, Logan said that the team definitely improved, but could have been better. He added if the development goes as planned, he can see Gowanda winning a league championship.

ARMISTICE DAY, 1931 – On Nov. 11, 1919 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Armistice Day to mark the first anniversary of the end of fighting in Europe during World War I. Twelve years later, Gowanda observed the occasion by dedicating a drinking fountain on the corner of West Main and North Water streets. It was a gift from the American Legion Post 409 ladies’ auxiliary. Mayor Charles J. Richards accepted the gift from Mrs. Andrew McLaughlin, Legion auxiliary president. Rev. Charles F. Brandt gave a brief address and the Girl Scouts Drum Corps played. One minute of silence was observed throughout the village. At 5:30 p.m. the annual Armistice Day dinner was served to more than 500 people at the Legion hall. The fountain was installed and put into service on May 18, 1932. In 1938 Congress made Nov. 11 a legal holiday. It was changed to Veterans Day in 1954. Navigators assist with entering all information into the online portal, determine eligibility based upon household size and income, and identify if tax credits are available to help reduce monthly premiums. These plans offer the same coverage but different premiums.
