McKeever leads the way for Gowanda grapplers By Mark Benton SPORTS REPORTER
Gowanda Central School senior Lucas McKeever will lead the Panthers during the 2014-15 season. “Lucas is a definite threat to go to the New State Championship Meet this year,” longtime head coach Mark Leous said. Gowanda is pinning its hopes on its captain, McKeever, who went 44-7 last year. “Lucas has 110 career wins and will no doubt add to that total this season,” Leous said. “He is on his way to breaking the school record of 135 wins held by former Panther grappler Joe Stearns.” McKeever was the Most Valuable Wrestler at two tournaments last year and should contend for several titles again this season. However, it is a chance to represent Section VI at the State tournament that McKeever has set his sights on. He placed fifth in the 2014 Section VI tournament. This year, he will compete in the 160-pound weight class. Gowanda will be wrestling in Division II this year. According to Leous, Maple Grove and Randolph will be the Panthers’ toughest opponents. The Blue and White will open their campaign on Thursday, Dec. 4 with a division match at Frewsburg. “We will be sending an experinced team onto the mats this season,” Leous commented during a recent interview.

Lucas McKeever, a senior, will be counted on to guide the Gowanda wrestling team this season. He has 110 career wins. Included in that group are seniors Josh Balzer and Dalton Mills, juniors Chris Hammond, Devin Richter and Devon Clark, plus sophomore Dave Poff. Each wrestler has
the potential to win at the county meet later this season based on their performances last year. Other returning starters who Leous is counting on to score
points will be Mickey Mentley, Brandon Arrigo and Ethan Francis. Leous also expects to see improvement from Jake Monat, Chelton Bellinger, Aaron Henhawk and Cameron

Silver Creek wrestlers team up with Dunkirk

For the third consecutive season, the schools of Cattaraugus-Little Valley and Pine Valley will merge their varsity wrestling programs. And the result could produce another very competitive team. Under first-year head coach Sam Grey and assistant coach Rex Brown, CLPV looks forward to competing in several dual meets and tournaments this season. “We expect our toughest dual meets to be Falconer/ Cassadaga Valley, Olean, Gowanda and the combination of Westfield/Ripley/ Chautauqua Lake,” Grey said regarding his team’s 2014-15 schedule. “We also have some very good tournaments that we will take part in.” CLPV will open its 201415 season at the Maple Grove Tournament on Dec.

66 season. With McKeever leading the way and several other excellent wrestlers right behind him, the Gowanda wrestling program could make some noise this year.
After disbanding its high school wrestling program in 1985, Dunkirk Central School re-instated the sport seven years ago. The Marauders, however, had very tough sledding for the first three years after the re-instatement as head coach Joe McMurdy had to build the program from the ground up. “We have made very good strides in the last few years and have also become much more competitive,” the seventh-year coach said. Part of the reason for Dunkirk’s recent success came just eight miles away. The Silver Creek High School wrestling program was not drawing enough student-athletes out for the sport and merged with its
neighbor to the west at the start of the 2011-12 season. “It has been a smooth transition for the Silver Creek wrestlers that have come into our program,” McMurdy said after a preseason practice. “And it has helped two struggling programs turn into one very good team.” Silver Creek has a total of four wrestlers on the varsity team that wrestles all of its home meets in Dunkirk. The foursome includes: Brad Yochum (99- or 106-pound weight class), Billy Seiders (132 pounds), Kenny Pisa (145 pounds) and Ashton Lennan (145 pounds). Seiders will be one of the top wrestlers on the Maroon Marauders’ 201415 squad. “He will be closing in on 100 career wins this season,” McMurdy said. This will be the fourth year of wrestling at the high school level for Seiders.

North Collins fall sports success celebrated at banquet By Mark Benton SPORTS REPORTER
North Collins Central celebrated fall sports successes with a banquet and program on Nov. 24. Girls' Soccer Coach Tim Flanigan and Assistant Coach Robyn Turner reported not only on the team's success this year, but bright prospects for the future. The team was honored as a whole by the coaches of the Chautauqua Cattaraugus Athletic Association with the Sportsmanship Award. Senior netminder Aurora Klawinski was tapped as this year's MVP. Flanigan recounted one stop Klawinski made this season “with her face” as an example of her tenacity in goal. Five players, Kalla Jimerson, Emily Winter, Brianna Krawczyk, Morgan Lawton and Lilly Archulett, were given the Coach's Award. Senior Richelle Cyrek received the team's Sportsmanship Award and fellow
12th-grader Sam Gier was named Most Improved. Flanigan said his 21-player squad “was the biggest team I've ever had. They stepped up to the challenge. It was a good season.” The Boys' Soccer program also made a playoff run this season. Coach Jay Walters said he tried to establish his style this year on the competition the team would face. According to the coach, he “knew I had a good center but the addition of French foreign exchange student Gauthier Ferroullat let them be creative.” For his contribution, Ferrouillat was given the Coach's Award. David Lynch was not only named Team MVP but Walters reported had also been selected for the All-WNY Team. Walters presented the Eagle Award to Austin Winter and Most Improved Honors to Nicholas Herc. Girls' Volleyball coach David Burgstahler enjoyed his team's capture of its first Blue Patch in 27 years. Pointing to
that section win against Panama, Burgstahler said, “We lost the first two games, and for those of you not familiar with volleyball, that would seem to be it for us. But the girls came back and won the next three. They learned that you never give up.” Burgstahler selected Jasmine Filkow as the team's MVP, also announcing that the junior had been selected to the Second Team in AllWNY honors. Filkov, along with her sister, Angela, also won spots on the CCAA All-Star First Team. Senior Arrika Bley was named to the league's second team. Senior Jenna Keppel was presented with the Coach's Award and freshman Courtney Wilson received the Most Improved title. The entire volleyball team and the majority of the other two teams also received Scholar Athlete pins reflecting their maintenance of honor or high-honor grades. Athletic Director Katie Shelly said, “We really didn't have any academic qualification issues this year.”

In the summer of 1968, a group of childhood friends in their early teens from the Gowanda area began to play organized touch football games on Saturday afternoons. Each game took place on a vacant field located at the corner of Aldrich and Allen streets that lasted about two hours. This once-aweek competition would continue through the Christmas holidays. After several seasons of Saturday and expanded Sunday afternoon contests, it was suggested that a special Thanksgiving morning game be added to the schedule. And sure enough, on Thanksgiving morning in 1973, a group of 12 boys, a majority of them now attending various colleges that were home on break, kicked off the inaugural game at 10 a.m. The first-ever Thanksgiving morning touch football game that was quickly dubbed the “Turkey Bowl” was played under sunny skies with the temperature in the mid-60s. It was a very competitive and spirited contest that wasn’t decided until the last play of the game. When the dust settled, it was decided to stage another special game the following year and hopefully begin some sort of tradition. Most of the same players did return for the second and third annual games in 1974 and 1975, which were also played at the same site in snow one year and rain the next. When year four

Although the players changed from year to y e a r, t h e g a m e c o n tinued to be played no matter what the weather and field condition were in the shadows of Hillis Field for the next 37 years. Except for one year, when just six players suited up for a three-on-three game, the “Turkey Bowl” has always had eight or more players take part. In fact, the game became so popular with alumni returning from several
states each Thanksgiving, that two games were played simultaneously for five consecutive years. In 2013, the “Turkey Bowl” was moved once again. This time, the game was played with over a foot of snow on the ground at the George Dispenza Memorial Field on Broadway Road. On Thursday, Nov. 27, 2014, under mostly cloudy skies and a muddy turf at the Dispenza field, 12 players were on hand to compete in the 42nd consecutive Gowanda “Turkey Bowl.” Two players who participated in the most recent game
have taken part in all 42 events. Several other players in this year ’s game have played in 25 or more of the local “Turkey Bowls.” On Thanksgiving evening, Channel 4 News out of Buffalo did a feature on a touch football game in West Seneca that had just completed its 35th consecutive game, claiming it to be the longest running in Western New York. I think the boys from Gowanda who began playing their own Turkey Bowl event seven years earlier need to make a call to Buffalo and set the record straight.

Kelly to move up to 182-pound class “Wolves” from page B1 Grey lists his top wrestler as Alex Kelly, who placed second at the Section VI meet last year while competing in the 170-pound weight division. “Alex will move up to the 182-pound weight class this season. He is also one of our Tri-captains, along with Randy Grey and Reggie Goodemote,” Grey noted. Randy Grey, Caleb Wares and Sam Grey all finished their 2013-14 season at the Section VI meet but did not place. This year, however, they should be contenders in their respective weight classes. Sam Grey will open the season at 106. Randy Grey is slated for the 152-pound weight class while Wares will replace Kelly in the 170-pound weight division. Other top performers on this year’s CLPV team are: Tyler Fedeson, (126); Tyler Penod, (138); Dylan Rhinehart and Austin Genberg, (160); Reggie Goodemote, (195); Derrick Becker and Chris Dolling, (220); and Justin Dickenson, (285). Grey said that Tyler Fedeson and Reggie Goodemote
are “first-year wrestlers that show a lot of promise.” Once the new year arrives, CLPV will continue to compete in several more tournaments, including the Patrick Morales Tournament in Falconer, the CLV Round Robin Tournament and finally the Salamanca Tournament. Although Sam Grey is listed as the team’s head coach, he stated that it is a joint effort between he and Pine Valley veteran coach Rex Brown. “Tom Kelly will serve as an assistant volunteer coach for the sixth year in a row,” Grey was quick to point out. The mergers of several schools with smaller enrollments in the sport of wrestling have been a way of life and survival over the past few winters. However, these schools such as CLPV have made the most of it and their athletes have benefited. In an individual sport like wrestling, it doesn’t matter where you wrestle as long as you have the opportunity to win a State title.

THE COLLEGE Bulls hire coach from Division III football powerhouse By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
Lance Leipold ran into a former colleague at a national convention last January and asked for some advice in moving up in the coaching ranks. Turner Gill, whom Leipold had coached with for three years at the University of Nebraska, shared his experiences taking a chance on a downtrodden University at Buffalo program in 2005 and building it into a champion in three years. Last month, when Leipold was approached about the possibility becoming the next UB football coach, he immediately flashed back to that conversation with Gill. “He said the more he came to look at this place, the more special it became,” Leipold said. “Turner is a man I have always respected and I took his words and advice that you need to look.”
PAUL HOKANSON/UBBULLS.COM
Lance Leipold posted a 106-6 record as the head coach at Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater. Leipold liked what he saw enough to decided UB was the kind of “special opportunity” that could lure him away from his alma mater, WisconsinWhitewater. In his eighth season coaching the Warhawks,
Leipold has a 106-6 record and five national championships. He is the fastest coach to reach 100 wins at any NCAA level. And his team is currently 12-0 and ranked No. 1 in the country entering the D-III quarterfinals.
Leipold will continue his pursuit of a sixth national championship while transitioning into his new job at UB. “I do need to finish the obligation of making sure we play our fullest as long as we can in the playoffs back in Wisconsin,” Leipold said. But Leipold is eager for the new challenge at “New York’s university,” he said. “This is an unbelievable opportunity, and it’s ready to take off,” Leipold said. Leipold is a proven winner, something athletic director Danny White said was a priority in his coaching search. “This team is ready to win and we feel like ready to win now,” White said. “As a result, as I went through this process, I wasn’t out there selling a rebuilding effort. I was out there talking about the character and talent we have in our program and really looking at and targeting successful
head coaches, proven head coaches that have won. “I was not too interested in looking for folks with a learning curve.” This is a departure from White’s last major hire, men’s basketball coach Bobby Hurley, who no head coaching experience and limited experience as an assistant, but was a highprofile name by virtue of his playing career, and his Hall of Fame father’s success at the high school level. White and Leipold also acknowledged that UB’s new coach will face a learning curve on the recruiting trail. With no scholarships to offer at WisconsinWhitewater, Leipold drew nearly all of his players from Wisconsin and Illinois. He plans to hire a staff of assistants that will help him make vital contacts in other areas. “That’s got to be proven,” Leipold said. “You have to just go out, and like anybody,
you have to prove yourself. … That’s a part we’re going to work hard at.” At WisconsinWhitewater, Leipold also had a winning tradition and facilities that were the class of Division III to sell recruits. Leipold will not be able to sell those qualities at UB. But he believes the university has plenty more to offer potential players. “You have to be aggressive in recruiting,” Leipold said. “You need to be thorough. “Most importantly, once you make the evaluation, when you deal with student athletes, you have to talk about what the opportunities are on the field and off the field. This is not just a fouryear experience. This is going to be a 40-plus year experience for them, and this university can open doors for those student athletes after they leave here. I think when they see that, they’ll be as excited as I am.”
OP Middle student sparks UB volleyball team this season By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
She never shows up on the score sheet and only takes the floor during timeouts. But Savannah Harvey played a part in helping the University at Buffalo volleyball team qualify for the Mid-American conference quarterfinals for the first time in school history. Savannah, a 13-year-old Orchard Park Middle School student, sat on the Buffalo bench in her No. 10 jersey at home games this season. “Savannah is the little light
on the team,” said Danielle Marotto, a junior from Lancaster. “She’s fantastic in all of the huddles. Even though there is tension, she is always the one that’s trying to bring every one up. She dances around and it gets everyone to smile.” Savannah linked up with UB through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, which seeks to improve the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors. In 2005, Savannah was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a malignant tumor that originates in the cerebellum, a region of the brain that plays
an important role in motor control, attention, language, and regulating fear and pleasure responses. Her cancer is currently in remission. Coincidentally, Savannah’s father, who played volleyball at Springfield College, had a prior relationship with UB head coach Reed Sunahara. And her older brother, Noah, had played junior varsity volleyball for Rick Albano, husband of the former Stephanie Jansma, a Lancaster native now coaching at UB. “Savannah really helps the girls put things in perspective,” Albano said.
“No matter how things get on the court, you see her and she’s happy. She’s enjoying every minute of it. So we should be happy out here playing a sport we love. And no matter how far we are down, we can fight back. Savannah is definitely a fighter, and we want to portray that on the court for her.” Getting a high five from Savannah during timeouts became a home game ritual for the Bulls this season. And in the final MAC home game against Akron, one the Bulls needed to win to make the conference tournament, Savannah began giving hugs
during stoppages in play. UB went on to sweep the match. “I told her her hugs were lucky,” senior Liz Scott said. “Savannah and her family have brought a new light to the team. She’s so upbeat, she’s got so much spirit, and when she gives us a high five or a smile on the bench, it lights up the whole team.” Being part of the UB team has also been a light in Savannah’s life. “It feels pretty good getting to know the girls, being here, encouraging them to win,” Savannah said
“The girls are wonderful with her,” said Savannah’s mother, Andrea. “They are excellent role models. They are just so sweet with her. They accept her for who she is, and support her for who she is.” UB will return all but two players from this year’s team, which finished 17-15 and tied a program record with six MAC wins in Sunahara’s first season. Savannah will also be back on the bench next season. “She’s part of the team,” Marotto said. “She’s part of our family.”

Spectators attending high school sporting events for many years have been captivated by the smiles and spirit displayed by the sideline cheerleaders for every school. Whether it be behind the team’s bench on a hot Saturday afternoon in September, or a cold rainy night in November for football, or under the bright lights inside of the gymnasium for basketball, the school’scheerleadersarealways present to support their team. Over time, cheerleading has evolved from an activity to a sport. Within the past few years, the New York State Public
School Athletic Association has recognized high school cheerleading as a sport on the same level as any other sport sponsored by a high school athletic program. And rightfully so. High school cheerleading over the past quarter century has seen a tremendous change from the traditional leading the crowd with a series of chants with a few mounts or cartwheels, to cheers that include gymnastic routines and halftime dance arrangements. At Gowanda Central School, the Panther cheerleading squad has been under the direction of Charisse Sprague for the past nine years and 18 seasons, counting both football and basketball. Sprague, who was
a former professional cheerleader for the Buffalo Bills, has incorporated many of her skills as a gymnast and dancer into the Gowanda program. And there is so much more involved besides the physical demands of being a cheerleader. “AsacheerleaderforGowanda, our girls raise funds to attend campsandcompetitionsthroughout the off season,” Sprague noted. “It can be quite exhausting since the cheerleaders also run the concession stand when we are not cheering during the football games.” Gowanda has done very well in competitions during the Sprague era although she is quick to point out how difficult it is to always compete against much larger
schools. “We also have other successful sports for girls in our school that take away many athletes from cheerleading,” Sprague said. Besides the games and competitions, the “Blue and White” cheerleaders have attended summer camp almost every year during the past decade. They also host the annual “Cheer For Lindsay” game that raises funds for the Lindsay Ann Rebmann Scholarship Fund. In addition, the varsity and JV cheerleaders reach out and invite the local youth cheerleaders to perform with them during halftime of a football game as part of the annual Cheerleading Sisterhood weekend. As for the upcoming basketball season, the Gowanda cheerleaders will include Michelle Merrill and Faith Winship, both seniors; junior Georgia Shaw, plus underclassmen Dayna Veloski, Mary Sommers and Jessica Whalen. Each of the girls were members oftheschool’sfootballcheerleading squad this past fall. First-year girls for the varsity basketball program are: Autumn Mentley, Mayson Phillips, Sadie Boutelle, Cierra Newcomb, Elena Stroehmeyer and Olivia Eastland. So the next time you attend a high school football or basketball game and the cheerleaders are performing, remember that they are athletes too, and put a lot of time into their sport.

Cattaraugus County Agriculture Trail information The Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism is in the process of collecting information on all operating agriculture businesses in the county. The county wishes to better promote the county’s agricultural businesses and products by developing a county Agriculture Trail. Crystal Abers, director of the Department stated, “A letter and survey have been mailed to over 500 agriculture businesses to help us in identifying the county’s agriculture assets and to invite them to participate in our promotional
activities, which will include an Agriculture Trail.” The southwest region of New York State has long been known to be prime agricultural land that supports a diversity of farms and farm operations. “Cattaraugus County, home to approximately 1,100 farms, supports and promotes our rich history of agriculture. The county and the Cattaraugus County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board have created a website (ccAgHelp. com) titled 'Explore Agriculture in Cattaraugus County' for the
purpose of providing a one-stop center for all things agriculture and agriculture-related in Cattaraugus County,” explained Abers. “The site is a portal to help area farmers and agri-businesses obtain information and to open lines of communication with those that are in the region to aid farmers and agri-businesses. Included on the website is a directory of farms, which lists approximately 60 of the county’s farms. We would like to invite those ag businesses not already on the list to join. “For further promotion of our agriculture businesses, Cat-
taraugus County is developing a “Cattaraugus County Agriculture Trail” to highlight the abundance of local food options available to consumers and to promote those farms and local food producers that make the region’s food system vibrant, diverse, sustainable and healthy. In addition to local foods production, other nonfood-related products (such as trees) will be featured as well. The Trail will also showcase those farms that welcome visitors to see the farming process up close and personal,” stated Abers. “In addition to the agriculture
website and the Agriculture Trail, the county hosts an Annual Farm Tour for County Legislators, county Planning Board, Agriculture and Farmland Protection Board, and others. Farms that were featured in the 2014 Farm Tour included: Great Valley Berry Patch, Snow Brook Farm, Maple Ridge Bison Ranch, and Pumpkinville. As you can see, we try to showcase a variety of farms. We would love to hear more about other farms and visit their operation.” Abers continued, “Periodi-
agriculture-related seminars for agriculture entrepreneurs, such as bee keeping/honey production, poultry, and hops. These seminars help identify what can be produced in Cattaraugus County, markets for the product, resources to help with establishing the agbusiness, and much more.” For further information or to obtain a survey regarding the
County Agriculture Trail, call Ginger Malak at 716-938-2312 or email her at ggmalak@ cattco.org
