Canalside Ice Rink opening thrills vendors By Catherine Miller COURIER CORRESPONDENT

It was more than just iceskating lovers that were pleased with the opening of the new Canalside Ice Rink. The local merchants that surrounded the rink during opening weekend were equally pleased with the outdoor venue bringing crowds to downtown Buffalo during the holiday season. “We came down to be part of the experience,” stated Eric Dacey, co-owner of Buffalo Adore Gift Shop that presently has a shop on Abbott Rd and at the Market Arcade – yet didn’t want to miss out on the opening of the Canalside Rink event, “We love all of the changes in Buffalo and what’s happening on the waterfront. We are inspired by all that is going on and we want to be a part of it.” Buffalo Adore was not the only gift shop business that brought wares from local artists to the rink’s edge on opening night. While “mixed-use” has become a commonplace term in Buffalo with regards to property ownership,

it has become equally popular with Buffalo events. HarborCenter Ice Rink’s saw hundreds of ice skaters, as well as many that were there to enjoy live music, and shop their local vendors and enjoy the walking paths. The ice rink will be home to skaters as well as ice bikes and broom ball players – and with plenty of room. The 33,000

sq. foot rink is the largest in the state and is triple the size of Rockefeller Center. In addition to gift shopping visitors could purchase hot cocoa, warm nuts, craft beer and pretzels. Previously the site of the Memorial Auditorium, the land was originally the area of a large trade center in Buffalo during its growth in the 1800s. Now again the destination for residents and visitors, the site is expected to become a year-round destination for dining and entertainment purposes. If you are having trouble keeping up on all that is new and different at Canalside – you are likely in good company. With the fast-paced changes and developments the easiest way to find the fun at the waterfront is by viewing www.canalsidebuffalo. com. Or – stop down to check out the Canalside ice rink at the foot of Main Street. Admission to the rink is $5 for adults, with discounts for children and $3 skate rental available.

Community rallies together for annual holiday drive The holiday season is a time for communities to come together. For Erie Community College’s community, it’s a time to lift up fellow students pursuing a better future one class at a time. In a drive that was extended because of November’s “Winter Storm Knife,” ECC administration, faculty and students collaborated with the college’s Board of Trustees to collect and package offerings throughout their three campuses for their annual President’s Holiday Food Drive, which culminated at Williamsville’s North Campus on December 12. The student-led collection of non-perishable food items and/or gift cards— which is now in its seventh year—will aid over 137 families within the college’s community, comprised of working students and their families who need an extra hand this holiday season. ECC President Jack Quinn and his staff have organized these efforts every year since he arrived at ECC in 2008. According to Quinn, it’s an effort that’s indicative of the altruism evident throughout the community

college’s campuses. “This drive is a true reflection of the holiday hearts within our hallways,” said Quinn. “We have our entire ECC family joining to give what they can to help our students. That’s school spirit, and it’s alive and well around here all year, but especially at this time of year.” Donations have been forthcoming since before Thanksgiving. The final offerings collected at North Campus—which consisted of more than 35 gift cards and enough food donations to fill over one hundred holiday care packages—will be distributed to families through ECC’s Student Services Office before Christmas. And since 2010, ECC’s Student Government Association (SGA) has teamed a separate toy drive with the President’s Office drive to form a collective initiative even more able to aid ECC students fraught with economic hardships. “The selfless nature of our college’s community has never ceased to amaze me,” said Quinn. “I’m not only thankful, but humbled to be a part of it.”

Local sports Unselfish Buff Sem hoops squad has strong December By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

A new home and a strong start. There is no doubt that the Buffalo Seminary varsity basketball team has had a lot to smile about in the month of December. After opening with a loss, the Red-Tailed Hawks rolled off an impressive four-game winning streak during which they defeated Oracle Charter Dec. 6 and Buffalo Sciences 44-14 at Daemen College on Dec. 8. From there, Buff Sem went on to post two more non-league wins over JFK, 41-25, and Buffalo East High School, 56-34. “It’s just awesome,” said senior Gabrie Augello. “Being on the team for three years, we haven’t had anything like this. I started as a freshman and I haven’t seen a team so close. I think that’s why we’re winning. Because

we’re so close and we work so well together.” Doing it for each other is exactly why the Buff Sem girls are smiling. “I think it’s an unselfish team this year,” said head coach Eva Cunningham. “They pass the ball around. I always say pass the ball around at least once in the zone and they’ve actually been going through with it. So that’s why I think we’re having more success this year.” Cunningham said the girls have always listened to her words of sharing the ball and being unselfish. The better, more consistent results just seem to be the byproduct of the experience the girls have with each other and playing in Cunningham’s system. But at the heart of it all is the unselfish, do-it-for-eachother mindset. “Relationships on your team is really important,” said co-captain Sara Smolarek. “And our team is great at that this season.” Augello agreed, saying the unselfish approach has forged a bond of everyone

wanting to win for the girl next to them. “There is definitely an enjoyment that hasn’t been here in past years,” said Augello. “We all have our little handshakes and little inside jokes with each other. It definitely helps because you get to cheer on your team. In past years it was more about doing well for yourself. But say if one of my friends score, it’s for the team. So that’s what’s definitely different from past years.” Cunningham added that another one of the biggest differences compared to previous years is the numbers. In past seasons, the Hawks were usually lucky to have just enough to get by. This year, with 14 girls on the roster, every girl knows no spot is a lock and that they have to battle for playing time. “Basically, I think where the turn around is, we have more competition on the team so our starters are challenged in practice everyday, which is a huge help for us,” said Cunningham. “And we’ve been able to have many people in games. Usu-

ally it was just one or two players that were scoring.” Cunningham joked that having more bodies means that she and assistant coach Kacie Mills don’t have to take part in every drill as in past years, but the fact that there is legitimate competition for starting jobs is in fact pushing every girl to be her best everyday. “Obviously there are a lot of people, so it makes you want to work harder,” said Smolarek. “You do get a lot more competition in practice and now it’s paid off.” Gabrie Augello said the increased competition in practice has helped to foster a harder-working approach come game time. No spot is secure and one poor effort could have anyone on the bench. “Exactly,” she said. “The freshmen and the sophomores have really pushed the upper classmen to do better. With more girls, it shows that more people are interested in the sport and that kind of drives us more.” Point guard Samantha Burlow has done an out-

Casey Ball has also stepped up with some big minutes and co-captain Erica Luciano is another voice of leadership on the court. Buff Sem also has the

added plus of playing home games at the historic “Pit” at Kenmore Middle School, where the Kenmore West Blue Devils used to play their home games. KMS gym has auditorium-style seating that looks down into “the Pit” of the gym floor. “I think we played really well in the gym,” said Smolarek.

Because so many members of the Canisius basketball team had a long run with the state championship football team, they didn’t have as much time together in the preseason as most other teams. But Husband and his squad aren’t using the late start as a crutch in anyway. “We’re trying not to use that as an excuse,” Husband said. “They came right from football. Most people get weeks or months off (between

seasons). They went from one sport to another and worked their tails off everyday to get back into the flow.” Trueheart echoed his coach’s words and said no one on the team is thinking about how long football went, because that will only lead to excuses and bad habits down the road. “As soon as everyone got back, we knew it was go time,” said Trueheart. “Everyone from last year, the goals that

we have in mind. And we know each other pretty well. That chemistry is already there.” Defeating the defending Section VI Class AA champion Red Raiders in a hard-fought game that wasn’t always pretty was a good gauge for the Crusaders as they went into league play on Dec. 23. “That’s the fun part about basketball,” said Husband. “It’s finding that team chemis-

try. It takes a while, especially offensively. We’re not even near where we need to be at the end of the season.” Crusaders point guard LaTerrance Reed had seven of his team-best 22 points during the first quarter as Canisius clung to a 14-12 lead as both teams were far from at their best. Zach Panebianco’s 26 points helped keep Jamestown close, but the support staff did not add enough offense to help Panebianco out.

Local sports Welch family bound by the game of hockey By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

Ask any member of the Welch family and they will say the same thing: they couldn’t imagine life without each otheror the game of hockey. Abby Welch, a junior, and big sister Madison Welch, are members of the Nichols School Prep “A” girls hockey team that is coached by their dad, Scott Welch. Scott said being able to coach his daughters at this level is special and a part of their family’s fabric that is so tightly woven into the game. “It’s a great opportunity,” Scott Welch said, “to be able to spend as much time as I spend with them, but also with some of these other kids.” The Welch hockey bonds

also obviously include Scott’s wife Tricia and their two older daughters, Kelsey and Haley —who also both laced up their skates for the Big Green during their days at Nichols. Kelsey went onto play at Syracuse and Mercyhurst, while Haley, who just turned 22, is currently playing for Union College. “I think it starts with my family, obviously. We’re all really close,” said Madison Welch, who will continue her career at Syracuse. “My older sisters set the bar high for us going Division I. It started there. Abby and I have looked up to them and with Nichols hockey. We’ve always been so close.” Two of the key reasons why Nichols continues to be so successful have been Abby’s scoring touch and Madison’s work in net. The interaction between Abby and Madison is unique in itself. As sisters, Madison and Abby are each other’s biggest supporters. But, at the

Because Abby’s the first to let

her know she scored. Even though it might be one for 20, Abby will let her know one went in.” With an ear-to-ear smile, Abby Welch said it’s hard to beat the satisfaction of poking the puck by her talented older sister. “I definitely love to rub it in,” said Abby Welch, who has

verbally committed to Penn State. “But I kind of hold back though because it normally causes a huge fight in the house when I do.” Madison Welch has a hard time restraining her classic bigsister eye roll when Abby puffs out her chest after a goal. But at the end of the day, nobody is cheering louder when her little sister light’s the lamp in a game. “Obviously, like my dad said, I’m the goalie. Abby is the forward. So in practices, her scoring on me, it would cause tension between the two (of us),” Madison Welch said with a smile. “But it’s pushed us hard being together, working out together.” While scoring on Madison is a thrill, at the end of the day, Abby said the true joy in her heart is being able to share the greatest game on Earth with the people she loves most. “I grew up with three older sisters who play(ed) in college, and that is pretty neat,” said Abby Welch. “I’ve kind

of grown up knowing hockey from them.” Madison said while their parents have made countless sacrifices to help all four of their daughters, seeing Haley and Kelsey realize their DI college dreams told Madison andAbby they could do it, too. “I never thought when we had our first daughter this would ever happen,” said Scott Welch. “We’ve spent so much time together as a family watching their sisters play. It’s been a great experience for all of us.” Their time together as teammates in high school hockey will probably zip by faster than Maddy or Abby would care to think. While the future will be full of new challenges, they both know that their future successes are rooted in the time together and with their family. “Yeah, definitely having Maddy by my side, she’s my best friend,” said Abby Welch. “It’s nice to have her by my side and like a backbone by having her there.”

Zugger’s ACL rehab paying off in the form of starts scrimmaging in a practice. It was in like the last two minutes of SPORTS REPORTER practice. I jumped in the air and someone’s elbow hit part of my A win is great. A good stat line knee, then it popped and twisted is a nice bonus. But for Kellie and I just fell right over. I kind of Zugger, perhaps the best part of screamed loud.” Zugger instantly knew someplaying varsity basketball is just the simple pleasure of stepping thing was wrong. Her knee swelled, and even though she onto the court again. A Nichols School senior, Zug- hoped and prayed for the best, ger is savoring every second when she went to the doctor’s, spent on the court after losing deep down she feared the worst. “At first I could actually walk all of last season to a devastating right after it happened, so I didn’t torn right ACL/MCL injury that think it was the ACL. They she suffered in November 2013. “I got hurt last November thought maybe it was just the about a week before the season meniscus,” Zugger said. “I went to the doctor about two started,” said Zugger. “We were By Dave Ricci

days later and he told me what happened.” The news wasn’t good. Zugger would need surgery to repair the damage and would spend the next nine months on the shelf. It was heartbreaking news for Zugger, who was on the fringe of realizing her dream of becoming a full time varsity starter. “I was extremely disappointed because I knew I was going to be able to play a lot,” she said. “Because coach told me I was starting and all that. So I was real excitedandthen(theinjury).Soit was really disappointing.” Zugger slowly but surely rehabbed and worked her way

back into playing shape. Finally getting back on the court again this past July, she was so thankful to be able to return to the game she loves. While Zugger was able to maintain her conditioning through other workouts during hernine-monthrehabstint,when training camp for the 2014-15 varsity season opened, Zugger’s heart and desire had her ready to get back in the thick of the battle to win back her spot in the line up. But Zugger was concerned that missing so much game action would have her behind the eight ball in terms of development compared to girls who had the

benefit of playing last year. “I was worried when I came back that I would not be very good,” Zugger confessed. “But I feel like I’m the same as I was before.” Zugger’s fears were unfounded, as she has returned with a vengeance and has been the Vikingsmostreliablescoringthreat, averaging 12 points per game. “I think Kellie has really been stepping it up lately. Particularly in the last three ball games,” said Lady Vikings assistant coach Sandy Cunningham. “The last three ball games she’s definitely beenourleader.She’sbeenworkinghardontheboards.She’sbeen

carrying us in terms of points and she’s really been stepping it up, looking to shoot. Looking to drive and looking to make things happen.” Zugger really hasn’t gotten overly philosophical about her return. But she does know that after one of the most emotionally draining experiences of her life, she is fortunate enough to get back something important that she thought might be gone forever and to finally hear her name in the starting lineup. “I love when they announce the starters,” Zugger said as her face lit up. “It’s my favorite part. Oh my gosh. It’s a great feeling.”

Tips to help you personalize your kitchen

(NAPSI)—If your family is like most, it’s not like any other, and your kitchen shouldn’t be either. Every family has its own distinct requirements for the kitchen. Fortunately, a few simple steps can help you personalize your cooking and cleaning space to make it work best for you. Some ideas to personalize your kitchen workspace: • While a monochrome look can be sophisticated and serene, a few pops of color in curtains, cushions, door and drawer pulls can set it off and point it up. • Use your kitchen to show

off your style. If you collect saltshakers, say, display them on open or glass-fronted shelves. Display your grandmother’s famous pie recipe in a frame. • It’s a bright idea to look to the lighting. There should be task lighting, accent lighting to highlight a special feature, and general overhead light. Try a bright spotlight in the kitchen over the sink or stove. • Let that light shine on a sink you’ve customized to meet your needs. The Blanco One collection offers three sinks and five innovative accessory kits that combine to create unique personalized

solutions for cooking, cleaning and organizing. Start with the sink bowl. The Blanco One base is available in three model sizes to match your needs—XL Single, Super Single and Medium bowls. The 9”-deep bowls are easy to clean and created from high-quality stainless steel with Blanco’s signature Satin Polished Finish. If you want to keep knives out of reach of your kids, if you want a cutting board that lets you clean, cut and save space, or if you live in a small space and you don’t have counter space to both clean and prep, there’s a Blanco One accessory just for you. The Magnetic Sink Caddy holds cleaning tools inside the sink; the Workstation holds knives and utensils; an Ash Compound Cutting Board fits to the sink to save space; protective Custom Grids and a Multi-Level Grid serve as an additional rack above the base grid to protect the sink. To make shopping easy, there are five convenient Blanco One accessory kits. 1. Organized—The spacesaving caddyzholds cleaning tools and sponge while the grid protects the sink. 2. Safety—The handy workstation keeps sharp knives clean and out of harm’s way and the grid protects the sink. 3. Prep—The incredibly thin and durable cutting board fits to the sink to save counter space and is paired with the caddy. 4. Culinary—Create a personal prep station with the cutting board and convenient utensil workstation. 5. Multi-Level—Exclusively for the largest bowl, this two-grid system offers a higher rack for prep and protective base
