ORCHARD PARK SUN EDITOR

There is a fair chance that you might have spread Mentholatum vaporizing rub over your chest, to fend off a bad cough. Maybe you or a female companion recently purchased a Softlips cube for extra lip protection during the dry cold weather. Perhaps you swear by Rohto eyedrops for red and irritated eyes. But did you know that the company responsible for these and many other household-name skin care products is based right here in Orchard Park? The Mentholatum Company, which operates its North American headquarters on Sterling Drive off Milestrip Road, is today one of the top manufacturers of skin care products in the world. The company, along with its parent company, Japan-based Rohto Pharmaceutical Co., also manufacture Oxy acne medication, WellPatch, Natural Ice lip balm and Hada Labo Tokyo skin care products, among others. But Jean Legros, Mentholatum’s senior director of marketing, notes that while the company has a strong presence in national retailers and consumers’ minds, they are still dwarfed by some of their competitors, particularly Proctor & Gamble Co., which manufactures the oth-

er iconic vapor rub, Vick’s. “Mentholatum competes with giants. It’s like David and Goliath,” said Legros, adding that Mentholatum also competes against the Fortune 500 corporation Johnson & Johnson. However, the company has staked out a position in both the American and international markets through what Legros calls unique, top-quality skin care products. He says the company is in a strong position for growth; their goal is to double their revenue in the next five years. With this goal in mind, Mentholatum launched two new, innovative products in the last year. The first, the Softlips Cube, promises effective, soothing lip care, and comes in a sleek, trendy design, aimed particularly for the female market. The other is a Nighttime variant of its original vapor rub, with “naturally soothing lavender” to provide gentler cough relief. “We generally pride ourselves in the passion and the quality of our people to help us develop, produce and market all out of here in Orchard Park,” Legros said. “You talk about Buffalo (as} an AllAmerica City; I like to think that Mentholatum is one of these All-American brands. The Mentholatum Company was founded in 1889 by Albert Alexander Hyde, an early purveyor of the medicinal and topical benefits

of menthol. Developing the vapor rub recipe which the company still uses today, he founded a partnership called The Yucca Company in Wichita, Kan. By 1906, the company changed its name to The Mentholatum Company, following the success of the original Mentholatum Ointment, and had opened an office in Buffalo. Several years later, in 1919, the company

opened a factory on Niagara Street in Buffalo. The company found early success by marketing heavily in East Asia; they began selling to Japan in 1913 and today manufacture several of the leading skin care products the region. In 1975, Rohto Pharmaceutical Company became Mentholatum’s licensee, and in ’88, Rohto purchased Mentholatum. Legros says the two com-

panies “realized (they) had synergies.” Throughout the ’90s, Rohto and Mentholatum began to market a number of innovative new skin care products and opened new factories in the U.K., Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and elsewhere. The company continued to expand its product line throughout the Aughts, and are now anticipating sales of $500 million in 2015.

Mentholatum moved to its current location at 707 Sterling Drive in 1997. There they manufacture and package a number of their popular products. The location also serves as their North American headquarters. And yet, despite manufacturing so many leading and trusted skin care products, Legros still feels as though Mentholatum’s presence goes unknown by most Buffalonians.

As part of continued improvements to the zoo, there are plans to build a shade structure. Giraffes already have use of an enclosed structure, as well as a large giraffe yard of approximately one-half acre. However, during the zoo’s accreditation process in 2011, it was noted that there was little to no outdoor shade. The Association of Zoo’s and Aquariums (AZA) requested that a shade structure be built to help keep the animals cool and out of the direct sunlight of the summer months. In order to achieve reaccreditation, the Buffalo Zoo needs to install this structure before 2016. Community Papers of WNY, Lamar Outdoor Advertising, and Towne MINI share a commitment to our community and are partnering together to help. You may have noticed several billboards throughout the Buffalo metropolitan area introducing Sampson to his hometown, along with featured articles in all of CPOWNY’s community newspapers. Red Cross calls for blood donors as unique as the patients they help In honor of Black History Month this February, and in the spirit of Dr. Charles Drew, an African-American surgeon who was the first medical director of the American Red Cross and a modern blood-banking pioneer, eligible donors as diverse as the patients who need their blood donations are encouraged to give blood to ensure a sufficient blood supply. Blood from a donor with a similar ethnic background as that of the patient is less likely to cause complications, particularly for those patients whose chronic conditions require repeated transfusions. Sickle cell disease is one such chronic condition affecting as many as 100,000 people in the United States. Prior to transfusion, blood type and Rh factor are matched between donated blood

and the patient in need. In some cases, additional red cell markers in donated blood must be matched, as well. These markers are best found in blood from donors of a similar ethnicity. With seasonal flu and inclement winter weather preventing many regular donors from giving, the Red Cross urges healthy, eligible donors to make an appointment to donate blood in the coming days and weeks. All blood types are currently needed to help maintain a diverse and sufficient blood supply, especially types O negative, A negative and B negative. To learn more about donating blood and to schedule an appointment, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood. org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-7332767).

As for the theme of Love, Life and Magickwell it’s certainly not your typical Hertel Ave. store. “It’s an eclectic, metaphysical shop, Cunningham said. “That I offer supplies for different spiritual paths that people may be on. I would mention the pagan path, the Santeria path and the Buddhist path. Love, Life and Magick carries a very wide variety of pagan supplies like herbs and stones and in-cents have been big sellers as well. Even more important than the items, Cunningham and her staff offer the guidance that helps you find the path that is right for you. A supporter of the buy local movement, Cunningham sells products from local venders and also promotes local artist through art shows. Cunningham added that Love, Life and Magick will also have multiple classes including intuitive tarot card reading and healing stone and crystals classes. While Love, Life and Magick is certainly a unique and different departure from more traditional restaurants, bars, pizza places and hair salons that dot the landscape of Hertel Ave. Cunningham feels that the combination of being different and the fact that there is a need for this type of business among those who follow this path will be a winning formula for her.

Kurtlyn Cunningham smiled and she said her first venture into the world of owning her business is a bit scary. But it is also very, very exciting. Cunningham, 38, rang in the New Year in an exciting way as her shop Love, Life and Magick located at 1374 Hertel, just opened on New Year’s Day. A North Buffalo resident, Cunningham was already familiar with the neighborhood and felt the Hertel strip had a lot to offer. “I do live in North Buffalo, Cunningham said. “I picked this area because I hang out in this area myself. So I was familiar with it and felt comfortable opening it up over here. While many new business owners have been inspired to come to Hertel Ave. because of the much talked about rebirth of the neighborhood, Cunningham said it was her connection to North Buffalo that told her in her heart this was the place to be. “Actually it was just because of me hanging out here over the years, she said. “Before I even moved to North Buffalo I was hanging out here. I’ve been hanging out in this area for probably about 10-15 years. So it was just more of a comfort thing. I have seen the rebirth and the revitalization. It is different than it was 10 or 15 years ago. In a positive direction. But that didn’t really sway my decision. It was more so A) It’s close to home-my commute is only a minute now. Local sports Nichols girls Prep A hockey embracing time on the road

By Dave Ricci Six. Count ‘em. Just six home games this season. The Nichols girls Prep A hockey team has grown used to having a tough, competitive schedule. And quite honestly, they wouldn’t want it any other way. To be the best, you have to play the best. But the 2014-15 season is a bit more daunting for the Lady Vikings as they will play just six regular season games in the friendly confines of the Dann Memorial Rink on the campus of Nichols School.

“I think there’s advantages to both,” said coach Scott Welch, whose team is playing roughly 24 games on the road. “I think when they’re on the road, they’re really focused on the team and not looking to showoff individually, but really play as a team as they know they need to do it. I think when we come there’s a lot of excitement to be able to play home.” These road trips aren’t simple 10-15 minute bus rides to other WNY-based high schools. The Vikings are looking at trips to Appleby College in Oakville, Ontario, Ridley College in St. Catherines, and in Cicero, N.Y. Just the simple process of loading and unloading buses, being away from home and staying up with their studies would be enough to deflate the spirits of most teams. But the Nichols ladies are looking at the positives of what being on

DAN HICKLING

the road can do for them, like how being road warriors is making them mentally tougher and not being rattled by playing big games in another team’s barn.

“Mentally tougher, absolutely, but more (about how) we’re bonding as a team,” said junior Michele Robillard, who is expected to continue her

career at Mercyhurst. “We spend a lot of time together on the bus and at games. We’re becoming really close. It’s not that hard being away from home because our families come with us most of the time. They care about us, they want to see us win. They want to see us do well.” Playing their first home game on Dec. 16, Nichols wasn’t home again until its 3-1 win over Ridley College on Jan. 21. Senior co-captain Maddi Welch, who will be playing at Syracuse University next season, agreed with Robillard saying that time away has made them a tighter, more familylike unit. “It’s been a challenge,” Welch said. “I think it’s more of a character builder and I think actually helps when we’re home because we’re

so pumped to be home and finally have our home games here and have our parents and a huge crowd here. So I think it’s definitely a challenge to be away, but it also helps us in a way.” The feeling throughout the team and coaching staff seems to be that with just six home games, every home date feels that much more special and pumps the girls up even more to play well for their family, friends and classmates, who haven’t had much of a chance to see them this year. “I think we only have five home games on the season,” said Scott Welch. “So I think the kids are really, really excited for the opportunity to be here.” The Lady Vikings have back-to-back home games Jan. 30 (5:30 p.m.) and Jan. 31 (noon), then don’t return home until Feb. 10 and 12.

Team-first Frasier affords CSAT hoops leadership By Dave Ricci There are players, and then there are teammates. Those who put the greater good of the team in front of their own needs. Those who make the experience of being on a team like being part of a family. Jordan Frasier is one such young lady. Frasier, a Charter School of Applied Technology senior, is a co-captain for the Lady Eagles varsity basketball team who is doing her best to make her fourth and final season of

scholastic hoops memorable for everyone. Under new coach Lindsay Bergman, the Eagles entered the new season with the fresh approach of making this year’s group have an unselfish, teamfirst mindset. After seeing a lack of team unity over the past three seasons, Frasier, as a senior-captain, felt this was the year she could really make an impact and change the culture. “That’s really the thing about it,” Frasier said after CSAT’s 4616 win over Roy-Hart on Jan. 27. “I’ve been playing for three years, this is my fourth year now, and we’re a team now and we have to stay a team.” Bergman said the bond that the team has forged in such a short time has been truly amazing. From going to the mall and

planning other team bonding activities like bowling outings, they do everything together. And Frasier has been an influential reason why. “She’s a great representative of our team and just an overall student-athlete at CSAT,” said Bergman. “She is hard-working on and off the court. She is a kid who is dedicated to whatever she does. She’s the president of student government in school. She is highly involved and has a lot to offer at all times. That’s what you want. You want students that are willing to lead and able to lead at the same time.” Watching Frasier on the court, her basketball IQ Is evident. She can dribble, shoot, rebound and pass, but it’s Frasier’s people skills and team-first attitude that truly make her a standout. Her

personality instantly makes her teammates feel welcomed and that they are part of the team. “We actually love each other,” Frasier said. “We’re really family. I really believe that’s how it is.” Frasier has shown her teamfirst mentality in the way she has helped Bergman transition in as the new head coach. In some cases, it’s not uncommon for a senior to resist changes or different roles that a new coach might implement. Some seniors argue, debate or simply flat-out ignore what their new coach says and just focus on themselves. Not Frasier. She knows that part of her duty as a captain is to leave this team in better shape then when she first joined. Part of

that process is giving Bergman her unquestioned respect and best effort on the floor every single day. “Well yeah, we have a different coach, but it’s still totally like the same team,” Frasier explained. “We have a new coach with a different coaching style so we as a team have to adapt to her.” Bergman said Frasier has completely opened up and has been willing to take on any new role or challenge that has been asked of her, and that her flexibility, drive and desire to do her best are the kind of traits that will make Frasier successful in life. “She has the ability to probably play in college if she wanted to but it’s much more to her,” Bergman said.

“She takes what she learns here and in school and applies it everywhere. During her internship, just anything you can think of. Jordan is all-in, 110 percent no matter what. And that’s what makes her such a great person, studentathlete, whatever label you put on her.” Make no mistake: Frasier definitely wants to win. But she also puts forth the message that time spent as friends in the team setting is even more valuable. Years from now when they gather and reminisce about times together, it won’t be stats or final scores that they laugh about; it will be the team bonding memories that Jordan and her teammates will carry for the long haul.

Local sports West Side Rowing Club brings Christmas to family in need West Side Rowing Club (WSRC) continues to support its community through philanthropic efforts, most recently with the Mothers of Alumni Rowers (M.O.A.R.s) group, bringing Christmas to a St. Patrick’s Friary familyin-need with gifts and a special holiday meal. M.O.A.R.s began in 2012 to continue the kinship among WSRC rowing families whose athletes had graduated. Once a month, the group gets together and has an outing, including each year’s seniors’ mothers to continue as volunteers at the Club. This past year for their December philanthropy, the group voted to sponsor a family-in-need for the Christmas holidays. One of M.O.A.R.s founding members, Maryalice Victor, and her mother, Kathie Brinkworth, have been actively involved with

the St. Patrick’s Friary Pantry for many year. “The group jumped at the chance to sponsor a family for the holidays,” Victor said. The donations provided for a Christmas to remember for the family, with presents for each of the six family members and a special holiday dinner. The St. Patrick’s Friary is run by coordinator, Monica Kwiatkowski, and her assistant, Jim Dudziak, under the direction of the Franciscan Friars. For many years, the Pantry has provided support for numerous area families. While delivering the group’s donations, Victor and member Barbara Johnson discovered one of the Pantry volunteers, Betsy Broderick Kurzdorfer, is the great niece of Michael Broderick, the second (and longest serving President) of the West Side Rowing

Club. Kurzdorfer’s father, Thomas, was the son of Joseph Broderick, Michael Broderick’s brother. Broderick’s WSRC legacy includes rowing the first 8-person shell in Buffalo, managing the United States Rowing Team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, being only

the second American to receive a lifetime membership in the Canadian Rowing Association, being enshrined at the National Rowing Hall of Fame in 1983, and having the Broderick Plate named after him, the most prestigious annual award distributed by WSRC.

In the future, M.O.A.R.s intends to sponsor the WSRC “Boat of Hope,” using an old rowing shell to hold donations for area families in need. The hope is that current rowers and families will have an opportunity to participate with M.O.A.R.s, as well as be able to sponsor several additional families through holiday gifts for each family member and a special family Christmas dinner.

The West Side Rowing Club was founded in 1912 with a mission to promote the advancement of the physical, mental, and moral well being of the youth in Buffalo and the surrounding areas. Since 1921, West Side has hosted high school teams. Throughout its 102 years,

West Side has won countless national and international championship events, having sent over 30 athletes to represent the United States at the Olympic Games and Elite World Championships, and advanced hundreds of youth athletes to top collegiate schools and rowing programs across North America. In 2007, the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Fontana Boathouse opened adjacent to the Doc Schaab Boathouse to form the West Side Rowing Club Campus. With two boathouses, over 100 shells, 400 feet of dock, 20,000+ square feet of indoor training space and the only indoor rowing tank in Western New York, the West Side Rowing Campus is the premier rowing and training center in Buffalo and one of the top training centers in the United States.

attention, and games between the rivals are becoming more anticipated each season. The last 10 years or so have been a sort of Ground Zero for the local hockey programs. After playing at the Division III level since 1980, Canisius moved to Division I competition in 1998, one season after Niagara established its Division I program. In 2003, the schools were joint hosts of the NCAA Frozen Four, setting in motion a flurry of activity which helped grow each program. Canisius became a charter member of Atlantic Hockey when the league formed for the 2003-04 season. Niagara remained a member of College HockeyAmerica until 2009-10, but still often had Canisius on

its schedule. When the Purple Eagles joined Atlantic Hockey for the 2010-11 campaign, it accelerated the importance of games against Canisius and helped foster the natural rivalry. Last weekend, the teams met twice at Dwyer Arena, where Canisius swept the games by 4-1 and 6-4 scores. The results were consistent with each team’s recent play: Canisius (12-8-6, 11-4-5 in Atlantic Hockey) extended its undefeated streak to seven games (6-0-1), its longest stretch since 2000-01, while Niagara (3-19-2, 3-13-2) dropped its sixth straight and has not won in 12 contests (0-10-2). Even though the schools are trending in opposite directions this season, the rivalry has had

its share of significant games in recent years. The schools met in the first round of the 2011 Atlantic Hockey tournament, with Canisius coming out victorious. In February 2013, the teams split a pair of games when Niagara was ranked #15 in the nation. The Purple Eagles held that same ranking a few weeks later, when the Golden Griffins scored a 5-3 win in a head-t0-head matchup in the Atlantic Hockey semifinal; Canisius went on to the NCAA Tournament, where it lost to Quinnipiac in the first round. Last weekend, the games drew decent crowds of 1,013 and 1,302 on the Niagara campus, where capacity is about 1,400. It’s easy to anticipate

potential sellouts of 2,000 when the teams eventually play each other in Canisius’new Harborcenter home next season. To boot, Niagara could turn its fortunes around soon. Before this year, it has never suffered consecutive sub-.500 seasons as a Division I program, so a quick rebound wouldn’t be surprising. Canisius is on the upswing, bolstered by a home facility it can call its own. Once the schools establish equal footing on the ice, there’s no telling how intense the rivalry will become. Who knows? It could even move beyond the traditional one we’ve seen on a wooden floor for decades.
