By Danielle Jensen While roaming the halls of this weekend’s Buffalo Auto Show, make sure to “spot” the Towne MINI giraffe-wrapped MINI Cooper. Did you know, just like human fingerprints, a giraffe’s coat pattern is unique to that individual? Not only can you see this fun, giraffe-themed, new 4-door MINI in person, you can also purchase raffle tickets for your chance to win a 1-year lease or $5,000 cash. Community Papers of WNY and Towne MINI are excited to be partnering with one of our areas greatest community resources, the Buffalo Zoo. All proceeds from ticket purchases will be donated to the Zoo, to help fund the building of a giraffe shade structure. Raffle tickets will cost $5 each and anyone donating $10 will receive an original giraffe jump drive, donations of $20 will receive a stuffed animal giraffe, complete with personalized Sampson bandana (must be 21 or older to enter). Additionally, people of all ages can donate $1 and be entered to win a 6 foot stuffed giraffe. Visit Community Papers of WNY at the Towne MINI booth, during the Auto Show. Raffle tickets will be sold throughout 2015, with winners being drawn in December. Rules and restrictions apply, visit CPOWNY.com for details. The world giraffe popu-
lation is diminishing, with fewer than 80,000 in existence today. In WNY, we are fortunate to have the Buffalo Zoo, and their newest giraffe addition, baby Sampson. As a popular recreation spot for WNY families, the Zoo is able to bring attention to the larger issues of animal health, welfare,
and conservation. And we need your help! Currently, Sampson and his family have use of an enclosed structure, as well as a large giraffe yard of approximately one-half acre. However, during the Zoo’s accreditation process in 2011, it was noted that there was little to no out-
door shade. The Association of Zoo’s and Aquariums (AZA) requested that a shade structure be built to help keep the animals cool and out of the direct sunlight of the summer months. The shade structure is one aspect of the Buffalo Zoo’s reaccreditation in 2016. There will be plenty of
opportunities to “spot” the Towne MINI Cooper throughout the year. Sampson’s MINI Cooper will also make appearances at the Buffalo Home & Garden Show, Erie County Fair, WNY Spring & Fall Health Expos, area shopping malls, and classic car shows. The car will even be
displayed on a regular basis near and around the Buffalo Zoo, including at a special community celebration for Sampson’s 1st birthday! Please consider purchasing raffle tickets, who knows…you may be the one “spotted” in your very own MINI Cooper!

The Buffalo Cheese Steak & Submarine Co. A.J. Morris smiled as she said that, after being in the bar/restaurant business for years, this time out she wanted to create something special. Something more than just another take out joint. Morris wanted to build something where families could feel safe, happy and add to the sense of community. Morris and her partner Tracy Nolan are two of North Buffalo’s newest business owners, having opened up The Buffalo Cheese Steak & Submarine Co., located at 1661 Hertel, on Nov.22, 2014. Morris, and her son Derek Morris, who jokingly describes his title as executive assistant, recently sat with the North Buffalo Courier and talked about why they opened their shop on Hertel Ave. “We had a bar before on Bailey and that was like a war zone,” Derek Morris said. “We just wanted a place where we can do business and go home without people trying to rob or shoot you outside. We used to call the police over there. Sometimes they would show up, sometimes they’d show up

two, three hours later.” “It’s a calmer environment. Really family oriented,” said A.J. Morris. “More family oriented that what we did previously. It was adults mostly in the bar and they would get the food and sit down. So (this) is calmer and, to me, a happier environment.” While the average observer might think ‘yeah that’s what Hertel needs, another sub shop.’ Morris and Nolan are already step ahead of the critics. Located at the corner of Hertel and Wallace, The Buffalo Cheese Steak & Submarine Co. is past that glut of pizza and sub places that dot the landscape between Delaware and Parkside. So they feel being away from the crowd, in an area that is still populated will work to their advantage and help them stick out a bit. “We like the surrounding areas,” said Derek Morris. “There’s a lot of working class people. Basically we just want to serve them.” Phase two in pulling away from the pack is the fact that The Buffalo Cheese Steak & Submarine Co., with its nearly 250 menu items, specializes in sandwiches that are regional favorites from other areas of the U.S. Sure, you can get a standard

cold turkey sub (like I did on my visit) and be absolutely delighted (like I was). But the more interesting items include authentic Philly Cheese Steak-made with real steak. Not just steak-ums. Or a 12 different versions of the Louisiana staple Po Boys. Selections that you simply cannot find anywhere else in North Buffalo. It’s paid off as a recent costumer from Louisiana was absolutely overjoyed to find a traditional sandwich from his home. “And he said he hadn’t had one since he was home,” said Derek Morris. “And he’s been in here two or three times.” A.J. Morris from neighborhood families and police officers from D station to residents of the Hertel Park Senior apartments-response has been wonderful. Proud that they opened with their own money, Derek Morris said it was certainly a challenge, but at the end of the day they don’t owe anyone any money for a loan. Walking in you are immediately struck by the bright, clean look of the all white interior and brand new floor. “It has to be clean,” said A.J. Morris. “That is a must!” With T-Bone steak dinners, burritos, tacos, soups, salads, pita pockets, a wide-array of sides, drinks, homemade pastries and kids menu with healthy options that are all very reasonably priced The Buffalo Cheese Steak & Submarine Co. truly has something for everyone. Most of all, beyond the menu items, The Buffalo Cheese Steak & Submarine Co. has owners that are grateful to have a chance at a business in this community and want to give back.

Local sports Robillard rests easy with college plans figured out By Dave Ricci There is more than just purpose in Nichols girls Prep A hockey player Michele Robillard’s movement on the ice. The junior carries herself with a quiet confidence that tells you she not only can make a difference, but she will make one. Behind that quiet confidence, there is also peace of mind. Robillard, a forward in her third season with the Nichols School girls Prep A hockey team, is doing her part to help the Lady Vikings to another successful season. Behind each point, Robillard has the peace
of mind to know that her future is set because she is already verbally committed to play college hockey at Mercyhurst. “It’s amazing because at school everybody is like, ‘We have to find out where we’re going. We have to search. We have to go visit everywhere,’” Robillard said as she explained the process that so many of her classmates are facing. “I already have it done. I can focus on school. I don’t have to visit anywhere. I have time to get my homework done. I have time to work on hockey. It’s really helpful.” Robillard, who skates on the top line with Abby Welch and Rachel de Perio, continued by saying that having her college plans set as a junior allows her to focus on her studies at Nichols and concentrate on becoming a better hockey player since she doesn’t face the outside distractions of setting up visits
DAN HICKLING
or worrying about impressing college scouts who might be at a game. “I remember one time I was told that there were scouts there looking at me, and I just played awful because it was in my head,” Robillard confessed. “Now that I know, that (worry)
is gone. I’m just playing my game and toning those skills I need to work on to be a good college hockey player.” Robillard said that the blend of it being a small campus with good academics and an amazing hockey program made Mercyhurst the perfect
fit for her. “Not only is it a good team, but I feel like it’s a well connected team and I’m really excited to go there,” she said. Nichols coach Scott Welch agrees that Robillard having her future plans set is a big part of her having greater focus and being a more effective player. “I think it’s had a huge impact,” Welch said. “I think a couple things have. Michele has grown into her body so physically, she has just matured. She is very, very strong, very athletic and you can see it’s now starting to transition to her play on the ice.” Welch added that the Vikings’ top line of Robillard, Welch and de Perio has been so consistent because of the unselfish mindset all three have. They work hard for each other and nobody cares who scores. Team success is all that matters. “If you look at the stats, I’m
pretty sure it’s all even throughout our line. It’s good to know that I have somebody good to pass to,” Robillard said. “I know they’re going to put it in because they’re good enough to (score). On the other side, I know that Rachel and Abby, if I’m open, they’ll give me a great pass and put me in a great opportunity to make a good play.” Off the ice, Robillard earned her black belt in Tae Kwon Do after just four years. She said the discipline that she has learned from martial arts has helped her deal with the mental side of life’s challenges. From dealing with a heavy work load at school to battling through a tough game, Robillard said Tae Kwon Do has given her the tools to deal with adversity. “It’s really good,” Robillard said. “Yeah, it’s an exercise, but it’s more mental. When I’m out there and I’m in a tough situation, I calm down.”
Burlow takes tough love from coaches in stride By Dave Ricci Samantha Burlow likes it when people call her “Sam.” But when her coaches yell out, “Samantha,” Burlow knows it’s time for her to up her game. And that is ok by her, because that is what she wants. She knows the only way to get better is for her to demand more from herself. “I like ‘Sam,’” Burlow said. “It’s easy to remember. Three letters. But when they say, ‘Samantha!’ that’s when
I know I’m in trouble.” In her second season of varsity with the Buffalo Seminary basketball team, Burlow, a sophomore who lives in West Seneca, knows that her coaches, Eva Cunningham and Kacie Mills, are tough on her for a reason: they believe in her. “I love when they yell at me and tell me to do better,” Burlow said. “Because it pushes me to be a better basketball player. Not just in basketball, but in other sports that I do. I have it in my head, ‘yes I’m young, but I can be one of the best when I get older.’” Seeing that internal toughness in Burlow tells Cunningham and Mills that their young point guard is someone
who can handle the pressure of greater expectations. “I call it grit,” Cunningham said. “She has this grit. Kacie and I are tough on her because she’s a point guard and we were point guards. So we are tough on her and she knows we’re only trying to make her better. “She’s not afraid to go in their against a 6-foot-4 person trying to do a layup. If she gets fouled or knocked to the ground, I know she’s ok because she just has that grit that it takes. So I think that’s what impresses me the most about her.” Cunningham hit the nail on the head when she described Burlow, who is barely 5 feet tall, as being gritty. But Burlow is far from reckless. On the con-
trary, Burlow is fundamentally sound and has the basketball IQ needed to run the offense. But while some younger players can be hesitant in tense situations, Burlow carries herself in a fearless manner on the court. She knows that even if she makes a mistake, it’s all part of the learning process. “There are dumb mistakes and there are good mistakes,” Burlow explained. “If I’m trying to make a move and having them tell me do this or do that, and I do make a mistake, they’ll understand because they know I’m trying. There is a big difference between constructive criticism and just getting yelled at.” Knowing full well that Cunningham (Iroquois/N.U.)
JEFFREY T. BARNES
and Mills (Kenmore East/ Medaille) were two of the best point guards to ever come out of WNY, Burlow is always trying to pick their brains for advice on how to get better. “That’s exactly it,” said Cunningham. “In practice, she’ll ask us questions. ‘Am
I doing this right? Am I doing that right?’ Then in games it’s trial by error, but she works hard and that’s all you can ask of her and she tries to do the things that we say. Every game she’s getting better and better with it, so we’re happy with her.” Cunningham said that with Burlow now being comfortable dribbling to her left as well as to her right, it’s allowed them to open their offense and add more plays than ever before. Also turning to senior Erica Luciano for advice whenever possible, Burlow said that she just shows up each day ready to work her hardest and prove she is worthy of the trust her coach and teammates have put in her.
Local sports Wheatley to ‘walk in the same sand’ as his father By William ‘Ski’ Wilczewski
One of Western New York’s top high school football prospects in quite some time has kept opponents on their toes for the past two seasons that he’s been in the area. On Wednesday, Feb. 4, everyone else was on their toes in anticipation of where Tyrone “TJ” Wheatley Jr.—a 6-foot-6, 265-pound Canisius High School tight end and defensive end—would decide to play college football next season. After offers from 20 Division I schools and five official visits, the wait is over. Wheatley Jr. will be a Wolverine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. “The opportunity to play
big-time Division I football and still be with my family is truly a blessing,” the senior said Wednesday after signing his letter of intent, “and I think it’s what God had planned for me.” This means that the CBS Sports and Max Preps second team All-American has passed on offers from USC, UCLA, Alabama and Oregon—the other four schools he paid visits to. “At first, honestly, I thought I was going to end up at UCLA,” he said, “and then I went out and visited Ann Arbor, and I was like, ‘This is home.’ I mean, I lived out there for five years.” That’s because Wheatley’s father—Tyrone Wheatley Sr.—had a star-studded career as a running back at Michigan before spending 10 years in the NFL with the N.Y. Giants and Oakland Raiders. Wheatley Sr. also accepted a position as a running backs coach for the Buffalo Bills back in the
WILLIAM ‘SKI’ WILCZEWSKI
2013, which brought his son here from the Syracuse area to finish off his junior and senior years. But those days in Ann Arbor still resonate with Wheatley Jr. “I was thinking I get to go out on the same gridiron and hopefully do what he did, but better,” Wheatley Jr. said. “I feel like I’m going to go there and help them turn this thing around.”
What side of the ball that will be on is still not clear, because Wheatley Jr. said the Michigan coaching staff still hasn’t decided on that yet. Regardless, Canisius coach Rich Robbins thinks his impact would be best felt on defense. “I’ve been on record from day one, and I think TJ’s a defensive player,” Robbins said. “He’s a phenomenal
tight end. He’s got the size, the ability and catches the ball very well, but he’s a game-changer on defense. Once they get him into next summer and see what’s what, coach (Jim) Harbaugh and the staff will make that decision, but if I was his college coach, I’d want him on defense.” On that side of the ball this past season, Wheatley had 68 tackles, with 24 for a loss. He also had 10 sacks, three deflected passes and forced four fumbles. He recovered one of those and blocked two punts. As a tight end in 2014 on a run-based team, Wheatley caught 11 balls for 182 yards and two touchdowns on the way to his 12-0 Crusaders defeating Stepinac 23-10 in the NYSCHSAA title game in December. As a blocker, the heavyweight also helped teammate Mitch Thomas gain more than 1,700 rushing yards this season. All that, however, is in the past now, and no one knows
that more than Tyrone Sr. “The recruiting is over now,” he said. “Now it’s work time. And that’s the way I’m looking at it for me, as well, but to have my son there to be a part of a great legacy; that’s incredible.” That feeling is mutual for Wheatley Jr., who said he’s not looking at it as following in dad’s footsteps. “I’m excited to walk in the same sand that he did, but not exactly in the same footsteps,” he said. “I’m going to go and work hard and hopefully build my own name and my own brand, as well.” Other D-I Canisius football signees on the day included tight end/linebacker Brad Zaffram (Texas at El Paso), kicker Michael Tarbutt (Connecticut) and wide receiver/ defensive back Josh Huffman (Maine). Crusader soccer player Matthew McCraith also inked his name to play for the U.S. Naval Academy.
Marinello makes return to Nichols as boys squash coach By Dave Ricci
Pamicka Marinello is proof that you can do more than just go home again. You can go home and give back. Marinello, a member of the Nichols School Class of 2008, is back in the friendly confines of the Knox Squash Courts as the new coach of the Nichols boys squash team. One of the
program’s all-time greats, Marinello is back on campus piloting the team as it goes through the transition of several key players graduating. Leading the way for the Viking this season have been co-captains Leyton Johnston (first court) and Matt Sherris (second). The players know that having Marinello as a coach is a stroke of luck for multiple reasons. Not only is Marinello knowledgeable about the game of squash, but being a former Nichols student-athlete, she has sat in the same classrooms, walked the same halls and has a first-hand understanding of the
academic and athletic expectations that come with attending Nichols. “She really helps us a lot, especially the younger kids who haven’t really played a lot of squash,” said Matt Sherris. “And she knows the experience of playing, losing, having a really tough match — all the work it takes to go to Nichols, and she’s really forgiving.” For Marinello, being able to say she is also a proud member of the Big Green went a long way in introducing herself to her team and helping them get to know each other. “It’s really helpful because I feel like Nichols has a re-
ally specific culture in terms of history, especially with this team. There’s a level that they expect,” she said. “We lost a lot of seniors, a lot of great players from last year, so a lot of them are new. The top guys work with their private instructors, they’re very good. The newer guys I want to work with a little more and they’ve really come a long ways.” Marinello then pointed to the scoreboard, showing that several of her less experienced players all won their matches in a victory over Shady SideAcademy, as proof of their growth. The rest of the Vikings’lineup includes Jack Vanderhorst, Eric
Dhillon, Jack Pfalzgraf, Matt Hogan, Ross DeRosa and Greg Sibick. “We knew it was going to be a rebuilding year and everybody knew that from the get-go after losing all of those seniors,” Marinello said. “So we just said, ‘you know what, as long as we can hold our own, we can start off a little slow during the season, and season matches don’t matter. It’s the championships and getting to nationals — that’s the end goal.” Though not getting too weighed downed by the results of regular season matches, the Vikings are enjoying a stretch of good play that has seen them
end January on a four-game win streak. A learning experience for Marinello as well, after coaching girls and doing private instructions, this is her first foray into coaching a boys team. Obviously doing her best to refine and improve the skill level of every player, Marinello wants to help cultivate that love for squash in her players so that they can always find satisfaction in the simple joy of playing the game. “They have a blast and our captains have been super crucial in increasing morale,” she said. “They just get with each other and have a great time.”
