If you’re planning to take a summer vacation, consider making this the year you do something different. • Take a child’s interest or a hobby of yours and turn it into a vacation. Mystery Bruise Appears, Vanishes As If by Magic DEAR DR. ROACH: I have just returned from seeing my doctor, and was told that the cause of what I experienced is a mystery! In the late afternoon, my husband and I were sitting at the kitchen table. He noticed that a bruise was forming on my right temple -- a dimesize purple mark, with a bump near the hairline. Over the next few hours the bruise grew larger, with red discoloration down the right side of my face, to the jaw. I had not been injured in any way, and it did not hurt! I called a 24-hour advice nurse, and was told I probably had broken a blood vessel. The next day, I called my doctor for an appointment, just to be on the safe side, but my doctor didn’t have anything to look at. When I got up, all the bruising and discoloration was gone! She told me that there would still be some discoloration if it had been a broken blood vessel, so therefore it was a mystery. -- C.C. ANSWER: I agree with the nurse that it likely was a broken blood vessel, which can happen spontaneously to anyone. Once the blood is under the skin, it gets cleaned away by cells with enzymes that break down the blood. The color typically goes from dark red to green to yellow. This way, we can tell approximately how old a bruise is. Very superficial bleeding also can move, as the blood literally gets pulled by gravity (which is why you had a darkening down to the jaw).

I suspect that while asleep, the remainder got pulled into the hairline or lower down, where it could no longer be seen. Many people have come down with another mysterious illness, chronic fatigue syndrome. The booklet on it explains the illness and its treatment. In 2003, a study at a university found that after using the washroom, women washed their hands with

soap and water 61 percent of the time, and men 37 percent of the time. Placing a reminder sign increased the rate to 97 percent of women, but only 35 percent of men washed their hands with the reminder, although 53 percent rinsed their hands without soap. Keeping hands clean reduces infection transmission to yourself and to others. Unfortunately, too often even doctors forget to wash our hands (only 65 percent of the time, in several studies). Our nursing colleagues are better at washing their hands. Q: Last summer, I repainted the garage. Because I had plans to paint some other rooms, I wrapped up the rollers and brushes in old plastic shopping bags to keep the paint damp. And then ... I forgot about them. This morning while cleaning my workspace, I found them again. The paint has hardened to stone. Can I save the brushes and rollers, or do I need to just buy all new stuff? -- Brad C., Kansas City, Missouri A: I’m not going to judge. I’ve let far too many paint-laden brushes dry out myself when I got distracted. But you should definitely try to salvage the brushes and rollers before shelling out money for new paint supplies. First, confirm what kind of paint you used in the garage last summer by checking the label on the cans of leftover paint. It most likely was latex-based interior paint, but oil-based paint is still in use. The good news is, latex is the easiest paint to clean up, even when it’s been dried on for some time. Don’t use solvents like turpentine, alcohol, gasoline or anything else to clean latex, and don’t listen to anyone who insists you use these chemicals. To clean latex paint off your brushes and rollers, fill a pail or utility sink with warm, soapy water. (Plain dish soap is fine.) Peel the plastic shopping bags off the brushes and discard them. If pieces of the plastic stick to the rollers or brushes, just leave them on, rather than potentially damaging the brushes by trying to pry them off. Drop the brushes and rollers

into the soapy water and let them sit for at least 20 minutes. Check to see if the dried latex is loosening up, being careful not to bend or tug at the bristles of the paintbrushes. If they’re still stiff with paint, the bristles could fray or break. Keep soaking them, checking every 20 minutes or so, until the latex loosens from the bristles and roller sponges, and you can easily push it off the brushes. (If the brushes are still stiff or have bits of paint stuck to them, try soaking the bristles in boiling-hot white vinegar for about five minutes, then run a stiff nylon or plastic brush (never metal) through the bristles.) Rinse the soapy water off, shake or spin the rollers and brushes to get rid of excess water, and let them dry on sheet of newspaper or clean towels. Oil paint is a different matter. If you used oil-based

paint and it has dried, you can try salvaging the brushes by soaking them in mineral spirits or paint thinner for several minutes. Make sure the room is well-ventilated, and that you wear gloves and eye protection during this process. Roller sponges with oil paint dried on them may not be salvagable but if you need to pry them off the roller handles, apply mineral spirits or paint thinner to the ends to loosen the dried paint. Finally, store rollers upright and either hang brushes up or store them in a clean paint can, handles down and brushes upward. The Buffalo Zoo’s newest baby giraffe can be seen in a series of eight billboards throughout the Buffalo metropolitan area, through February 1, 2015. These billboards are helping to usher in a new year of

celebrations at the zoo, including an upcoming coloring contest (winners chosen at random)! To kick off the celebration, CPOWNY is sponsoring a contest to win a stuffed baby giraffe, complete with a bandana with Sampson’s name. The first entry from each of the 25 community papers to correctly submit all eight routes and cross-street

billboard locations, will win the collectible giraffe. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Fury” (R) -- Sgt. Collier (Brad Pitt) -- or Wardaddy, as he is called -- has led his tank crew through carnage of World War II, all the way from North Africa to Germany. “Fury” is the name of their Sherman tank, manned by Wardaddy, “Bible” (Shia Lebouf), “Gordo” (Michael Pena) and an uncouth hillbilly called “Coon-Ass” (Joe Bernethal). Near the end of the war, the hardened crew gets a fresh-faced typist (Logan Lerman) as a new assistant driver. His first task: find his seat and wipe up the remains of his predecessor. Director David Ayer (best known for gritty crime dramas like “Training Day” and “End of Watch”) shows battle in brutal intensity. It’s a grim affair, but the mood and tone match the severity of what’s going on. The movie shows heroism in war without chest-beating or draping itself in a flag. “The Book of Life” (PG) -- This animated feature mixes pop culture and Mexican folklore to make an adventure about life, death, love and goofiness. Manolo (voiced by Diego Luna) is a passionate young guitarist who’s competing with a narcissistic soldier (Channing Tatum) for the love of the fairest -- and toughest -- young lady in town. This love triangle has the attention of the gods of the afterlife, setting up Manolo for an adventure through the worlds of the dead. The mythology of the movie is a lot of fun, especially the colorful and exciting “Land of the Remembered.” The film was produced by Guillermo del Toro, and

Hank’s father (Robert Duvall) is a judge -- and windbag -- who has ruled his small-town Indiana courtroom for decades. In his desperate hour, the high-and-mighty patriarch must rely on his son’s defense. “Art and Craft” -- For years, the most prolific art forger

in U.S. history got hundreds of fakes into museums and collections. His forgeries looked masterful, and he mimicked the works of artists from a wide array of styles and eras. Most of his art supplies were things you could pick up at Wal-Mart. He lied and schemed to pass off his work as the originals, but he never really made any money doing it. He wasn’t trying to. This documentary sits down with the unassuming middle-aged man, and puts light on a surprising human story.
