The students at St. John the Baptist School in Kenmore have learned how to get their work done but have some fun along the way thanks to its unique “After-School Care Program.” The school offers an on-site, after-school care program to families starting as young as Pre-Kindergarten. Program Director Katie Yackamovich states, “We try to create a relaxed, productive, and fun environment for the kids.” Healthy snacks is the first order of business after students check-in. “The little ones walk through our doors ready for their snack, just like walking into their homes. From there, we offer a study room for our older students for a quiet place to work on their homework, while our smallest tots blow-off some of their energy. From there, we all head out for outside playtime, even in the winter. On good days, we’re able to take field trips to a local park to change things up a bit. We also use the school’s gym for indoor play during inclement weather.” Since Yackamovich became the program’s new director earlier this school year, she’s

Sampson Needs Some Shade

Wild giraffes who roam the African Savannah thrive there because of the warm temperatures, water, food, sun, and shade. The Buffalo Zoo is committed to providing the same type of environment for their giraffe population, whose newest member, Sampson, will be experiencing all kinds of FOLPDWH FKDQJH LQ KLV ÀUVW year of life. As part of continued improvements to the zoo, there are plans to build a shade structure. Giraffes already have use of an enclosed structure, as well as a large giraffe yard of approximately one-half acre. However, during the zoo’s accreditation process in 2011, it was noted that there was little to no outdoor shade. The Association of Zoo’s and Aquariums (AZA) requested that a shade structure be built to help keep the animals cool and out of the direct sunlight of the summer months. In order to achieve reaccreditation, the Buffalo Zoo needs to install this structure before 2016. Community Papers of WNY, Lamar Outdoor Advertising, and Towne MINI share a commitment to our community and are partnering together to help. You may have noticed several billboards throughout the Buffalo metropolitan area introducing Sampson to his hometown, along with featured articles in all of CPOWNY’s community newspapers. Sampson also graced the cover of WNY Health’s January 2015 edition. Our goal is to bring awareness to the zoo’s conservation efforts, the need

Local sports By Dave Ricci The slogan says it all — Our House. When Kenmore East arrives at the Kenmore West Athletic Complex on Feb. 3 for Round Two of varsity basketball action, the Bulldogs can be sure of one thing. Their crosstown rival will be ready to defend their home court. The Battle of Ken-Ton will have yet another chapter written when the Blue Devils and Bulldogs lock horns in a girls/ boys basketball doubleheader, starting at 5:30 p.m. The Blue Devils will be looking to for the season sweep, while the Lady Blue Devils are looking to avenge a 53-52 loss to Ken East on Jan. 6. “I think now we really want it since we lost to them,” said

By Dave Ricci Jacob Elgie remembers that day profoundly. Elgie, then a sophomore, was in the weight room at Kenmore East when he was approached by Bulldogs wrestling coach Joe Korniczky, who asked how come he wasn’t trying out for wrestling. The question caught Elgie off-guard a

KenWest senior captain Destiny Catania. “We didn’t try as hard as we could, so we’re going to (play) to our full potential.” The Lady Blue Devils, looking to avenge their only Niagara Frontier League loss of the season, will lean on Catania, the 1-2 punch in the paint of Katie Proy and Sam Britton and sophomore guard Grace Ferguson. The Bulldogs, who got gamewinning heroics last time from Serena Sordetto, whose free throws won the first contest, will also look to Kendall Mills, Kiaja O’Neil and Sarah McCarthy. Giving full credit to Ken East for playing a strong, wellrounded game, Ken West coach Jeff Martin said his team needs to bring a more complete effort. “We need to play a full 32 minutes of Kenmore West Lady Blue Devils basketball,” he said. “That’s all I can ask from them. Just give it everything they have

for 32 minutes.” In boys action, the Blue Devils, who beat Ken East, 51-34, in the first meeting, are trying to build off the momentum of a stunning 77-72 win over Niagara Falls that knocked the

bit, as he never even gave wrestling a second thought. “I hadn’t considered it,” Elgie said. “‘K’” came into the weight room and asked ‘Why aren’t you wrestling?’ I didn’t really have an answer. He said ‘Try it for two weeks.’ I tried it for two weeks and I was like ‘All right. I’m not really feeling it.’ But I never quit.” Korniczky, who always tells newcomers “give me just two weeks to try it out,” said he has been very impressed by the effort Elgie has given. “I was scrambling for wrestlers. I walked into

the weight room and I saw four kids,” Korniczky said. “Four of them said yes, two of them showed up. Jake was one of them. He didn’t know anything about wrestling. He said ‘I’m not sure.’ I said ‘Give me two weeks.’ That’s all I ever ask the guys. He just took to it. He loves it. He’s got the bug in him.” The fact that Elgie stuck with it speaks volumes about his character. It’s one thing to try a new sport or activity, and fall in love with it because things instantly click. But that wasn’t the case for Elgie.

Wolverines from the ranks of the unbeaten. “It was a lot of close losses. Three points, one point,” said guard Terrell Ford, whose 27 points helped West climb out of an early 9-2 hole versus the

Falls. “We needed that ‘W’ to build our confidence.” Ken West had lost a couple of heartbreakers — a buzzer beater to North Tonawanda (Jan. 13) and in overtime to Lewiston-Porter (Jan. 20) — but even in defeat, the Blue Devils have started putting the pieces together. The Blue Devils came into the new year with a wealth of talent. It was just a matter of figuring out what pieces work best together and finding a starting five. Ford and fellow returnee Trent White have been the foundation. Slowly but surely, Aaron Tucker, who transferred in from East, and freshman call-up Tal James have helped to round things out. That fifth spot is usually occupied by either Jay Taylor, Mark Taylor or Tyler Aquilina, depending on what quality they need most on the floor.

“We’re starting to make more right decisions than wrong decisions,” Ken West coach Mike Meetze said. “Or we know why we’ve made the wrong decisions. I think knowing the ‘why you did it wrong’ is more important than making the right decisions. That’s where we’re starting to see the difference. Finally.” Meetze said that after going 4-4 in the first eight league games, the key now, more than ever, is to focus on consistency and setting the right tone for sectionals. “Everything has got to be sectional mentality,” he said. “Thirty-two minutes. That’s what we said with the Falls game — ‘If this is your last sectional game, what are you going to leave?’ We left a very favorable impression, and I think our confidence, you could just feel it building up a little bit.”

Wrestling has tested him more than he’s ever been before in his life. It would have been easy for him to walk into the sunset after those two weeks and never look back. But, as he said, Elgie is not a quitter. “I just never actually quit a sport or anything up to that point,” Elgie said. “So I was like ‘If I quit at this, what else am I going to end up quitting.’ I just kind of stuck with it. Didn’t think I was going to. Then after the season I thought ‘Well, I’m probably not going to stay for next season, but I came right back this year.’” Korniczky said the fact

that Elgie, who competes at 160 pounds, didn’t give in and quit reveals that make-up of what it takes to be a wrestler and why Elgie has done so well. In just his second season with the Bulldogs, Elgie is sporting the team’s best record at 12-7 and has placed in multiple tournaments. “Jake seems to learn pretty quick. He can recognize when he needs help on something,” Korniczky said. “He doesn’t ask, but if I point it out to him, he tries to correct it. He just has a great attitude for improving. I understand what hard work is. He’s in

the gym six days a week. He has the traits you want in an athlete.” One of the biggest challenges for Elgie was learning that wrestling isn’t just about brute force. Unlike other sports in which teammates can bail each other out on a tough day, it’s solely up to the individual in wrestling. But Elgie has stood his ground and lived up to the challenge. “It’s definitely the hardest sport I’ve ever done,” Elgie said. “I’ve done soccer and football. You always have to rely on a team for that, but in wrestling, it’s just you.”

Local sports Fleming quietly grows into big role for Thunder By Dave Ricci Julie Fleming doesn’t really think of herself as a multi-sport standout. She is just a girl who enjoys playing whatever is in season. Fleming doesn’t realize her abilities. “Whatever sport I’m doing I would say I like the most,” Fleming said. “But I would say I like volleyball the most. I would want to do that (in college). I want to play volleyball for D’Youville.” Fleming, a Mount St. Mary Academy senior, is a varsity letter winner in volleyball, basketball and softball. While volleyball seems to be her first love, Fleming is currently enjoying her best season on

the hardwood as a member of the school’s basketball team. “We had a hard schedule at first but now I think we’re going to do better,” Fleming said. “We’re getting better.” Flourishing in the readand-react style of offense that new coach Mike McCarthy has instilled, Fleming has recently had double-digit outings against Tapestry Charter (19 points), Bishop Kearney (12) and Christian Central Academy (16). “First and foremost I think it’s a matter of her being very coachable,” McCarthy said. “She wants to learn. She’s eager to learn. I think my personality mixed with her quietness really settles the two of us down. She makes me a little more calm and I get her motor running a little bit and it helps the two of us.” Fleming, as one of the team’s veteran leaders, through her hard work and a team-first attitude has helped with the process of McCarthy transi-

tioning from coaching JV to varsity. Other girls, especially the younger ones, see Fleming’s “Yes, coach” approach to the game and realize that is the way they should act, too. Fleming’s naturally softspoken personality also brings a quiet, calming effect to the floor. “Julie’s just a laid-back kid,” McCarthy said. “Nothing really fazes her. She never gets too high, never too low. I really wish I could have had her as a freshman because she has unbelievable abilities.” A good student and model of what a three-sport studentathlete should be like, Fleming is just doing her best to have as full and well-rounded of a time in high school as possible. “In middle school I used to play all the sports that I could,” she said. “Like swimming and soccer for a year. So I’ve always liked playing sports. I like sports because you just get a lot of good experiences and your friends from it.”

JEFFREY T. BARNES

Caruso prepares for redemption shot at states By Dave Ricci

Dominic Caruso has a photo in his bedroom that he looks at every day. It’s of him and John Tyomey, the person who defeated Caruso in the finals of last year’s Catholic state championships. It’s what drives

Caruso to work harder and to make the most of his final season of high school wrestling at St. Joe’s. “I have a picture of us right as we were shaking hands in the finals,” Caruso said. “Every day I just look at it and think ‘I want to get back there, but I want to be the one who wins it this year.’ It really makes me want to win.” Losing the 113-pound NYCHSAA title to Tyomey, 15-0, jarred Caruso from within. He knew that if he wanted to make good on his dreams of a state title he would have to work harder

than ever before. And that work would have to begin immediately. “Last year taking second at Catholic states just started the fire,” Caruso said. “It started the training. It started the lifting. Really just having a taste of what the finals is like and not being first on the podium really was driving me up the wall. I put in wrestling work, lifted every day. Did the best I could to be first on the podium.” Caruso, who is in his fourth year of varsity, said that when he thinks he’s had all he can take or worked as hard as

he can, he thinks about that photo and that loss, and then grinds out more work. “The big thing with the seniors is you don’t have to motivate them at all,” St. Joe’s coach Pete Kennedy said. “He knows what he needs to do. So from that perspective it’s pretty easy. We’re just trying to help him get better every week.” At the 30-win mark this season as of press time, Caruso said that one of his top goals coming into this year was to break the Marauders’ all-time single-season record

of 45 “Ws.” Well on his way, whatever happens the rest of the winter, Caruso already etched his name in St. Joe’s wrestling history when he became the sixth Marauder to make the 100-win club. He joined current teammates Derek Penman, who reached 100 career victories a couple weeks ago, and Richie Jones, who is second on the all-time wins list. “I go to Richie constantly,” Caruso said. “I’m always asking him ‘What do I do here? What should I do? What’s the best counter?’ He always has

an answer for me. I’m blessed to have him on the team.” Facing the top guys in his class this season like Don McCoy, Vincent Valvo and an upcoming match against the top-ranked 120-pounder in Western New York, Hector Colom of St. Francis, are all getting Caruso ready for states. “Wrestling has taught me to never stop,” he said. “No matter how good (your opponent), the best have fallen. So you’ve got to just keep trying every day. Just get better and do everything you possibly can to be the best.”

On Dec. 31, long-time Tonawanda City Court Judge Joseph J. Cassata will retire due to a state law that requires judges to retire by the end of the year they turn 70 years of age. This week, Mayor Rick Davis and Common Council members shared their memories of Cassata. Cassata has been a city judge since 1996, when he ran for and was appointed to his current position. Before this, he was city attorney for the City of Tonawanda, after having received his bachelor’s degree in political science from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1967 and his juris doctor from the University of Cincinnati in 1970. He was admitted to the bar in 1972.
