Edison Elementary School takes part in Read for the Record Students across grade levels at Edison Elementary School took part in the national Read for the Record campaign with a final count of 375 students who were read the Rosemary Wells children’s book “Bunny Cakes.” Read for the Record is a national campaign by Jumpstart, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving pre-school education. Each year, children all across the country are read the same book on the same day, raising awareness of the importance of reading to young children beginning at a very early age and raising money for early childhood education programs. Schools report back to Jumpstart on how many children were read the book and a final tally is announced. In 2013, nearly 2.5 million children read “Otis” by author Loren Long, once again breaking

It’s an enjoyable activity for students of all ages, according to Gretchen Seibert, librarian at Edison Elementary who coordinated the schoolwide effort. “There is something about reading aloud to kids. It doesn’t matter if they are five years old or getting ready for middle school. They just like to be read to,” Seibert said. The final national count has not yet been announced.

Kenmore Middle students share their love of Origami Thanks to a new club formed by two sixth grade students at Kenmore Middle School, their classmates have all the more reason to look forward to Fridays. Best of all, it is an activity that has a lot of educational benefits. It is a new origami club run entirely by students for students. During academic support period on Fridays in the Kenmore Middle School library, sixth graders Anthony Balash and Emily Trifilo teach participants how to take a single square piece of a paper and transform it through a series of complex folds into a crane, a ninja star, a box, and a multitude of other creations. “Anthony came to us and said, ‘I think we should have an origami club.’ It was his idea. We only facilitated it. We let him take the lead,” said Kimberly Conrad, library media specialist at the Middle School. “I cannot thank Anthony and Emily enough for providing an activity that involves critical thinking and is fun for his classmates.” On Fridays, Anthony and Emily help their classmates learn traditional origami techniques. At a session recently, in less than 30

It is the act of taking something as simple as a blank sheet of paper and making it into something so much more that captured Anthony’s interest.
“You can turn paper into animals and make them move, and it’s just paper – no tape, no glue. I think that’s pretty cool,” Anthony said. Emily shared his enjoyment of origami, and together they decided to start the club. “I knew how to make a ninja star, and he has helped me with animals,” said

Emily, who expressed the same reasons for enjoying the activity as Anthony. “I like it because there is no tape and no glue – just folds.” One thing that impressed Conrad was the effectiveness of Anthony’s style of teaching. When he showed the students how to make the folds, he did it with his back turned in order to make it easier for them to follow. He initiated group work. And he would walk around the room seeing how everyone was doing and helping them along the way. “He was so patient with the students too,” said Karen Peehler, library media aide. There are many educational benefits to origami. In addition to strengthening social skills and teaching patience and persistence, it also has close connections to skills critical in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. “It’s an activity that combines the social aspect of students getting together around a common interest with the rigor of higher order thinking and problem solving,” said Kenmore Middle School Principal Elaine Thomas.

Requiring Erie County vendors to pay women the same as men Did you know that, on average, a woman working full-time in the United States is paid only 77 percent of what a man is paid in a similar job with similar experience? Did you know federal and state laws prohibit such pay disparity, but companies still do it anyway? The time is now to end such pay inequality. That is why on Thursday, Nov. 6, I signed an executive order requiring contractors with Erie County to submit an Erie County Equal Pay Certification indicating their compliance with federal and state Equal Pay Laws prior to entering into
a contract with Erie County and subjecting said contractors to future monitoring and audits of contractor records to confirm compliance with federal and state Equal Pay Laws. With this executive order I am putting all contractors who want to do business with Erie County on notice that they must be fully compliant with all federal and state laws regarding equal pay for women, they must prove that prior to entering into any contract with Erie County, and be subject to periodic audits by Erie County’s Office of Equal Employment Opportunity.
The facts surrounding pay inequality between the genders is alarming: in 2013, among full-time, year-round workers in the United States, Caucasian women were paid 77 percent of what men were paid for similar work in nearly every occupation, while the disparity is even greater for minorities as African-American women earn 64 cents and Latina women earn 56 cents for every dollar earned by a Caucasian man. Women comprise 52 percent of Erie County’s total population, 48.7 percent of its labor force, 61 percent of senior citizens, and 54 percent
of the county’s registered voters. In Erie County, median weekly earnings for a woman working full-time are $638, while a man doing similar work earns $798. Employers seeking guidance in instituting pay equity in their own companies can access the National Committee on Pay Equity’s Self-Audit, which provides a ten-step guide for evaluating current organizational pay policy and implementing equity-inducing changes where necessary. Indicating the strong support in the community for such action, I was joined by
Sawrie Becker, Erie County Commissioner of Public Advocacy, Jesse L. Burnette, Director of the Erie County Office of Equal Employment Opportunity, Sheri Scavone, Executive Director of the WNY Women’s Foundation, Sara Vescio, Executive Director of the Canisius College Women’s Business Center, Jill Ann RobbinsJabine, CEO of the YWCA, Donna Berry, President of the YWCA Board of Directors, and other community leaders as I signed the order. The executive order, which goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2015, is the 13th I have signed and aligns with a
similar reporting requirement I have advocated for those seeking tax breaks from the Erie County Industrial Development Agency (“ECIDA”) but which has not yet been enacted by the ECIDA. I have always been and always will be an unwavering advocate for equal pay for equal work, and this order ensures that all vendors doing business with Erie County embrace that concept for their employees as well. Town passes 2015 budget, slight tax hike By Kimberlee Sabshin NT SUN CORRESPONDENT
Last Thursday, Nov. 6, the Tonawanda Town Board voted unanimously to approve its tentative budget for2015, with a slight tax hike for town residents, after sharing a presentation in which Town Supervisor Anthony Caruana broke down figures, department by department, for the public. Last month, the town board held two budget work sessions, during which its members reviewed each of the departments’ tentative budgets with each respective department head. Caruana noted residents have “enjoyed a decrease in their tax bill for the last two years” before the increase,
and Caruana said this was necessary to continue the town board’s mission. “The message that I, and the members of the town board, hear from our residents is clear: provide the highest quality of services at the lowest possible cost,” Caruana said. In 2011, the New York State Legislature approved a property state tax cap of 2 percent, allowing for “certain exclusions and adjustments,” Caruana said. Based upon the current rate of inflation, the property tax cap for 2015 was established at 1.56 percent, before exclusions and adjustments. The tax rate, after the exclusions and adjustments, is actually 3.63 percent. The cost
per day in 2015, for the average homeowner, for town government will be $3.27, up 2 cents from last year, but the same cost per day as it was in 2012, four budget years ago. The 2015 tax levy, or amount needed to be raised by property taxes, stands at approximately $44.95 million, an increase of $1.23 million, or 0.8 percent, from the 2014 tax levy. Since this is below the New York State property tax cap, residents will be able to receive a property tax rebate Governor Andrew Cuomo has made available, in an amount that should reflect the amount of the increase. “As a result, in effect, the average homeowner should not
have a tax increase,” Caruana said. The costs have gone up due to increases in costs of health and medical insurance for town employees, retirees and their families, wage increases for town employees, and other miscellaneous benefits including workers’ compensation insurance. The price of hospital and medical insurance has gone up by $910,000, Caruana said, and the town has also had to raise taxes due to the costs of the Parker-Fries Sewer Interceptor Project and other state-mandated sewer projects. “These significant improvements are critically necessary to our aging infrastructure, and to the
town’s ability to continue to provide these required services,” Caruana said. Caruana said although the budget process begins each January at the start of the fiscal year, the actual process of planning for the budget began in June, when Caruana began to review issues with the budget and discuss plans for making services in the town more cost-effective. He said department heads were “challenged to find additional ways to reduce spending, coordinate and share resources both within town departments and with other municipalities” and “seek new ways to provide services for 2015 and future budget years,” an ongoing process until sub-
mission of the budget. “I’d like to thank all of my colleagues on the Town Board: Councilman John Bargnesi, Councilwoman Lisa Chimera, Councilman Daniel Crangle and Councilman Joseph Emminger, for their diligence and assistance in making this budget one that reflects our continuing goal of presenting a fiscally responsible budget,” Caruana said. “I believe this budget addresses the needs and concerns of our residents in a challenging environment…this budget continues to provide the department heads with the resources they need to continue this mission without affecting the quality of services.”

‘Girl Code’ star comes to Buffalo By Lauren Kirchmyer
ENTERTAINMENT REPORTER
Syracuse native Jessimae Peluso grew up making her family and friends laugh. As she grew older she decided she never wanted to work for a boss, so she moved to Boston to work on improvisation and stand up comedy. In 2006, she packed her bags and moved to New York City. “It takes a long time to get funny,” she said, stating it takes a combination of ambition, humility and taking risks to make it in the comedy circuit. “I love connecting to random strangers by talking to them. I’m so fortunate to do it and make a living off of it.” Peluso found her best shows happened when she remained as genuine as possible on stage. One day, while performing stand up in New York City, her raw and unpredictable sense of humor attracted the casting directors of MTV’s “Girl Code” and she was invited to audition for the show. “Being approachable and having humility on stage served me well,” she said. The casting directors liked Peluso and asked her to join the show’s cast. “Girls have a hard time growing up in this culture,” Peluso said. She loved that
Jessimae Peluso. being a part of “Girl Code” gave her the opportunity to talk about various insecurities girls face while sharing her own experiences on how she survived them and became the woman she is today. “If I can let girls know beauty standards are ridiculous I think I accomplished something.” Besides being on “Girl Code,” Peluso has had the opportunity to appear on “The Tyra Banks Show,” “Failosophy” and “Chelsea Lately.” She also enjoys writing and has contributed to magazines such as “Cosmopolitan” and “Glamour.”
VINCE’S PIZZA
Though she has had many memorable milestones in the short amount of time she has been working professionally, her most memorable moment took place when she was shopping at her favorite store with her mom in Syracuse last Christmas. “A girl came up to me when we were at Marshall’s. She said I was her favorite girl from ‘Girl Code’ and asked if she could have her picture taken with me,” Peluso recalled. “My mom was so excited and was beaming with pride. It was a special moment for me. I’m doing all of this for my family. I want to be able to take care EST. 1985

of them.” Though she misses her family and the Western New York accent, the self-proclaimed “lazy kid” learned she could achieve anything when she dedicates herself. “Find something you want so bad you would sacrifice everything to do it,” she said. “I’m fortunate to have found that.” She hopes to continue writing for magazines and appearing on television. She is currently working on writing a memoir and is on tour performing stand up. Peluso will visit Buffalo – for her first time ever – to perform at Helium Comedy Club, located at 30 Mississippi St. in Buffalo. Her shows begin at 7:30 and 10 p.m. Saturday. General admission tickets are $20 and may be purchased at www.heliumcomedy.com/buffalo. A meet and greet will take place after every performance. “I invite all single firemen to come see my show,” Peluso said. “I love upstate people. I’m excited to perform for real, hardworking people and stuff my face with delicious Buffalo wings and upstate food.”
No Frills Buffalo releases two new books
No Frills Buffalo publishing company, based in Buffalo, recently released two new books, a children’s book by author Dolores A. Esposito and a fiction novel by Kevin Richard White. “Benty,” written by Esposito and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds, is a delightful tale of a bunny whose unusual ear makes a world of difference. Esposito is a former elementary school teacher and registered nurse. She wrote this story 50 years ago as a class assignment for her storytelling class at Framingham State College. After raising her family and retiring to West Palm Beach, she decided to finally publish her book. White’s “The Face of a Monster” is the story of two college-age girls — Browyn, an anarchist, and Elaine, a go-getter — who meet at a support group for those that have lost parents. Both of their fathers passed in different ways, but they strike up an abrasive yet charismatic friendship through their grief, anger and quirks. They both try to make sense of life after death, trying to become new people despite missing a vital piece of what made them alive in the first place. In this they learn what
they’re truly hiding from, a truth they cannot defeat and an acknowledgement that faith is more of a struggle than a feeling. Half memoir, half fiction, “The Face of a Monster” is an examination of friendship, family and the curse of memory. White is also the author of “Handprint on the Windshield,” a poetry collection, and “Steep Drop,” a novel. He resides in Pennsylvania. Books published by No Frills Buffalo can be purchased online at www.amazon.com, www.powells. com, www.barnesandnoble.com and www.nofrillsbuffalo.com. Several local bookstores also carry the No Frills Buffalo collection, including Talking Leaves; Dog Ears Bookstore; The Second Reader; Monkey See, Monkey Do; Lift Bridge Books in Brockport and Buffalo Street Books in Ithaca. No Frills Buffalo is currently accepting submissions from writers interested in being published. For more information, visit www.nofrillsbuffalo.com or email submissions@nofrillsbuffalo.com. Canisius downs Joe’s, claims 15th straight MMAA crown By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER
It was Trevor Gooch’s turn to be lifted in the air at the end of the season. Gooch had 16 kills and three blocks as Canisius defeated St. Joe’s 3-1 Nov. 5 at St. Joe’s to claim its 15th consecutive Monsignor Martin Athletic Association playoff title. Rebounding from a 2521 loss in the opening set, Canisius stormed back to win the next three by scores of 25-13, 25-17, and 25-18. When the Crusaders notched the final point, their fan base stormed the floor in celebration. They lifted Gooch onto their shoulders as he led them in the “I believe we have
won” victory cheer. “It was pretty unreal,” Gooch said with a smile. “(When I was) a sophomore they lifted up Dave Jepsen, last year they lifted up Tom Sullivan. This year it was me so it was pretty unreal. It was awesome.” During training camp, Marauders co-captain Anthony Berardi stated how their team was on a mission to end Canisius’ winning streak. Led by the play of Berardi and Jacob Donn (13 kills), the Marauders almost did pull off the unthinkable upset as they clearly controlled play in set one. “I think that was the chemistry that we were looking for all year,” said Berardi. “Right there in that one set. But like it’s been happening all season we took our foot off the gas and things started going down hill. We just couldn’t find a way to respond.”
But the Crusaders didn’t waver. As the match unfolded, Canisius showed why it is one of the elite programs in the state. Setter Charles Desmond had the offense humming with his 33 assists as the Crusaders’ passing was on point and the defense, led by Andrew Helwig, was solid. But it was the blocking of Daniel Berry, Andrew Schake and Peter Crofut (four blocks) at the net that stifled the Marauders’ offense as the night progressed. “We talked coming in that we needed to figure out a way to get through the first set, because any time you play Joe’s, the emotions. You heard all the craziness out there,” said Canisius coach Tom Weislo. “To St. Joe’s credit, they managed that very well the first set and we didn’t
manage it as well as we needed to. I told our guys, ‘we’re not playing the way we are capable of playing. As long we’re doing what we’re supposed to do we’ll be OK.’” In the end, the Crusaders just had ‘the want’ more than the Marauders did and it showed on the floor. The Marauders gave an all-out, honest effort. But in the wake of a defeat, a good effort rang hollow for everyone in maroon and white. “I’m not at all disappointed with their effort level,” said St. Joe’s coach Mark Anzalone. “They played hard on every single ball.” Added Berardi: “I’m proud of all the guys on my team. This was four years in the making. We’re all best friends. I’m just glad that I had the opportunity to come to St. Joe’s and have fun with my friends. That’s what it’s all about.”

Ken West grad Licata lands NT girls head coaching gig By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER
For Michael Licata Jr., basketball and family are one in the same. Licata, the son of legendary girls basketball coach Mike Licata, who spent 28 seasons coaching the Kenmore West Lady Blue Devils, has taken that next step on his journey of coaching by taking over as the new head coach of the North Tonawanda Lady Jacks varsity basketball team. “I’m very, very excited,”
Licata said. “Over the summer I had a couple of assistant job offers and people reaching out to bring me on as an assistant. But I didn’t really have any solid head coaching job offers. The fact that it’s in the league I’ve been in during my whole career, from modified through assistant varsity, jv. It’s the only league I’ve ever really been around. To stay in the league is awesome. Just great timing and a great opportunity and I’m excited about it.” A member of the Kenmore West Class of 2007, Licata played two-and-a-half years
of varsity for the Blue Devils before going onto play his freshman season at Medaille. Getting his first real taste of coaching with the Ben Franklin Middle School modified boys team during the 2011-12 season, Licata and best friend Cory Martin would move on to coach the Lady Blue Devils JV team for the next two seasons. A typical coach’s kid, Licata, possesses an incredibly strong knowledge and love for the game. Every bit as important is that fact Licata knows how to reach kids as individuals and teach them.
Just as vital, spending his entire life watching his dad and his longtime coaching partner Jeff Martin coach Ken West has given Licata strong insight on the subtle differences between coaching girls and boys teams. “This is somebody’s quote, it’s not mine. I heard it from somebody,” said Licata. “‘The biggest difference to me is in a men’s team you have to play good in order to feel good. For women’s basketball, usually you have to feel good to play good.’ That quote stuck with me.” Having been connected to
the Niagara Frontier League for all of his basketball life, Licata knows full well the rivalry that West and NT have had. Licata is eager to teach his NT girls basketball team the way he knows the game, but at the same time, Licata knows that he must be mindful to not force things on his new team or make them feel he is trying to turn his Lady Jacks into a replica of the rival Blue Devils. But he definitely plans stress to his new team the importance of key Lady Blue Devil traits like in-your-face defense
and the mindset of always being ready to out work the other team as part of his plan to make North Tonawanda successful. “(West) always seemed ready when it came to game time. So I’m really gonna try to bring that to NT,” said Licata. “We’re gonna try and have that crazy energy and that mentality going into games of ‘I don’t care who we’re playing, we can beat this team.’ We practiced hard enough and we prepared well enough that we have some sort of edge.”

THS boys soccer to lose talented players to graduation By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER
There will be a changing of the guard for the Tonawanda boys varsity soccer team. As the Warriors put the 2014 season to bed and eagerly look forward to next year, they will be moving forward without two of the biggest pieces of the puzzle in recent years. Chuckie Richards and Nate Holler, two of the Warriors’five seniors, will be moving on. Both sophomore starters and key parts of the squad that won the Section VI Class B2 title in 2012, the program’s first sec-
tional title in 20 years, Richards andHollerwerethecornerstones of the rebuilding process in 2013 after 11 seniors graduated from the sectional title team. After weathering some tough times last season, the Warriors rebounded with a strong year as they finished in second place in ECIC IV with a 6-3-1 mark, (9-8-1 overall). “I’m very proud of how this team matured,” said coach James Gabor. Richards and Holler were both named to ECIC IV first team and were selected to play in the exceptional seniors game, with Gabor serving as their team’s coach. Though they were on the losing side of a 2-1 final, Holler managed to score his teams lone goal in the game, which showcased the absolute best senior talent from across WNY. Recalling when he first saw

Holler as a seventh grader, Gabor said that even back then he knew Nate would be something special. “He’s a player that I’m going to miss and our program is going to miss,” said Gabor. Holler, who was named team MVP, closes out his four-year varsity career at Tonawanda with 45 goals and 17 assists. Richards proved why he was the perfect choice for the Warriors Most Reliable Player award when he scored the OT winner in the Warriors’ home playoff win over Springville, which marked the fourth time this season Tonawanda beat its division rival. The first win over Springville came in the third place game of the Dan Durick Memorial Tournament in August. TheWarriors also say goodbye to seniors Jared Simmonds,
Dylan Kowalski and Cody McGregor, who won the Best Teammate award in his first season on varsity. TheWarriors will return Dylan Lewis, who won the WithstandingWarrior award for overall grit and toughness on the field, and Josh Bukowski winner of the Attitude, Character and Effort award. They will also return Seth Kowski, Aaron Holler, Zach Krzemski, Jordan Kowalewski, Nick Carson, Ryan Gardner, Noah Meister, Bailey Vitko, Nick Bitter and late-season call up Cam Brunetta, who was named the the MVP for the junior varsity team. JV Offensive MVPTrey Lilly, Defensive MVP Charlie Moore and Best Teammate Adam Haentges are front runners to earn spots on varsity next season.
Lady Warriors’ seniors set bar high for youth Stallions By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER
The seniors have set the standard. Now, it’s time for the underclassmen to take what they have learned and march forward. Though the Tonawanda Lady Warriors soccer season ended sooner than any of the players wanted it to, they know that as a whole, 2014 was a memorable season. Following a 2013 squad that went to the Section VI Class B finals, this year’s squad came in with the bar
set higher then ever before and they responded well. Despite losing core seniors like Alanna Herne, Kalyn Compeau, Megan Tuskes and longtime head coach Julie Johnson, the Warriors, under new head coach and former Lady Warrior Angela Nicholas, had a season to be proud of. “I think they can walk away feeling a lot of success,” said Nicholas. “I think, more than anything, we created a standard for the program.” The Warriors opened the year by winning the championship of the Dan Durick Memorial Tournament. They held the No. 1 spot in the WNY small school coaches poll for the better part of the season and were in the hunt for the ECIC IV title until
the final day of the regular season, before injuries took their toll. The Lady Warriors will say goodbye to seven seniors: tri-captains Melissa Holler, Chezney Belcher and Alexis Lilly, as well as Shelby Stone, Jocelyn Lorenz, Jesalyn Cala and Heather Farnham. Nicholas said her seniors set a tone that the other girls will hold themselves to going forward. Finishing 12-5-0 overall, the Warriors ended the season ranked as the No. 3 team in Class B. They scored 64 goals, 23 of which came from Offensive MVP Hope Balling, while yielding just 14. Belcher was given the Best Teammate award, Lilly earned Ultimate Warrior for perfect attendance in games
and practices. “I don’t regret anything this year. It was so much fun,” said Lilly. “Playing with everyone my senior year. I know I’ll look back and smile.” Holler, whose season came to a close when she tore her ACL in September, earned the Attitude, Character and Effort award for her positive influence. “She tore her ACL,” said Nicholas. “And she was at practice the very next day.” Amy Farnham, who received 18 stitches in the same game Holler was injured, was the recipient of the Withstanding Warrior award in recognition of toughness. The Lady Warriors will return a strong core of talented players that includes Balling
and fellow freshman Grace Stranahan. Farnham, Pearl Bacon, Defensive MVP Sydney Kowsky, Gabby Krajewski, and goalie Haley Schoelerman also return. Schoelerman, in her first season of varsity, had 10 shutouts and a save percentage of 84.7. Brianna Baker, Dahnea Harrison, Shana Johnson, Michaela Walsh, Maddi Robinson and Jenna Hassett (Ultimate Warrior) will also return. “Next year, a word of advice for those girls is work hard,” said Lilly. “Don’t ever stop. You don’t know when your season is going to end. For example, look at Melissa. You don’t know when your season is going to end.”
defeat Regals
On Nov. 8, the Mite Major Clarence Stallions defeated the Regals AA, 5-1. The Stallions’ defense of Maximus Henning, Drew Idzik, Owen McIntyre and Tucker Schoen was central to the victory, allowing very few shots on net. Offensively, Luke Marchant had two goals, including one on which he dove and deftly swatted the puck between the goaltender’s legs. Miles Santa Maria had two goals and an assist. Nic Zivis also scored after taking a pass from Liam Graham, who fed one through the Regals’defense to set up a goal by linemate Nic Zivis. Idzik had an assist as well.

‘Weekend Update’ anchor connected to the Queen City By: Lauren Kirchmyer When Seth Meyers left the desk of “Weekend Update” on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” fans were wondering who would replace him. Although it looked as though it would be cast member Cecily Strong, Lorne Michaels asked the show’s head writer, Colin Jost, to fill Meyers’ shoes alongside comedian Michael Che. “Getting ‘Weekend Update’ has been the biggest moment of my life,” Jost said. “To perform on ‘SNL’ and be part of the cast and tradition is really cool.” But if you look at his life prior to his “Saturday Night Live” career, you may be surprised Jost is where he is today. “There are many people in my family history who worked in the engineering industry,” he explained. His father, an East Aurora native, worked for Struthers Wells in Buffalo, prior to moving to New York City to work for Procter & Gamble. Jost, on the other hand, enjoyed making people laugh while growing up in Staten Island. In sixth grade, he and his friends convinced their teacher to let them perform skits from “Saturday Night Live” for the class. When it came time to decide what he wanted to study for his undergrad however, Jost picked something far from comedy. The Harvard graduate studied the history and literature of Russia and Britain because he enjoyed reading. “I didn’t know I could have a job in
comedy. I thought it was just a fun thing to do on the side.” When he graduated college, Jost decided to submit a packet of his writing to “Saturday Night Live.” He didn’t hear back and six months later submitted a second packet. This time he received a phone call and went in for an interview with the show’s head writer, Tina Fey. She liked Jost and he moved on to another interview, with Michaels. “At the end he was like, ‘I’ll be seeing you around,’” Jost said about the show’s creator and producer. “I was not sure what it meant. Then I got a call interpreting what Lorne said and I started the next week.” His writing received a lot of laughs and Jost worked his
way up the “SNL” writing chain, earning him Emmy nominations along the way. Some of his favorite skits include when the cast sang Billy Joel’s “Goodnight Saigon” on Will Ferrell’s finale show, when Jonah Hill serenaded his “wife” for their anniversary and when Vanessa Bayer portrayed Miley Cyrus after her performance on MTV’s Video Music Awards. His favorite guests to write for are the ones who have an inherent comedy in them, such as Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifanakis and Emma Stone. He hopes to someday have the chance to write skits for comedians Eddie Murphy and Stephen Colbert, as well as actors Kate Winslet and Michael Keaton.
Outside of “Saturday Night Live,” Jost enjoys performing stand-up shows. “I’m a lot looser and goofier than the news anchor character I play on ‘Weekend Update,’” he said. To prepare for his shows, Jost spends time exploring the cities he’s performing in. Last week, Jost performed at Bear’s Den Showroom at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino. Before his show, he explored the American and Canadian sides of the falls and roamed around the city his father grew up in. “It’s so beautiful,” he said about the area. “It’s really cool to wander around and see the town.” Jost is also working on starting a career writing screenplays for movies. “It’s the hardest writing process because there’s so much going on. You have to make the script unique and funny and interesting for the viewer.” After having multiple screenplays rejected, or being accepted but having nothing created, his first movie finally came through. “Staten Island Summer,” a film filled with “Saturday Nigh Live” cast members about lifeguards who are spending their last week of summer together before they go away to college, is expected to be out in the spring or summer of 2015. “I’ve learned I’m pretty resilient,” Jost said. “If you really want something, stick with it and work at it. Eventually you will break through in some way.”

“Take a $50 bill, light it with a match and watch it burn!”
I’m serious. Go ahead and do it. What? You refuse? DO it anyway and see how it makes you feel. Painful wasn’t it? (Or were you just too chicken?) Well, guess what? Every day you run your furnace, you might as well take a $50 bill, light it with a match and watch it burn. Here’s why: That’s what your furnace is doing to you now. How do I know this? Simple. I know your furnace probably hasn’t been rejuvenated to factory fresh condition since the day it was installed. And every hour of every day it runs, it gets a little further out of adjustment, wasting slightly more gas for every unit of heat, costing more and more to operate. So, what can you do about this annoying situation? I’m glad you asked. Again, the answer is simple. Have a professional heating technician rejuvenate your furnace. To get the job done right, it will take about one and a half hours and $200 worth of labor and materials. The nice thing about a service like this is it usually
pays for itself several times over during the course of the winter... ...And if you call me for the service, not only will I have one of my top technicians do your rejuvenation for only $79, I will also guarantee your furnace won’t break down for the rest of this winter season. If it does, I WILL REFUND 100% OF YOUR MONEY. Why am I doing this for a price that’s below my total cost? Once again, it’s simple. I have just increased my capacity to handle an additional 125 new clients. And rather than lose money for the time it usually takes to attract that many clients, I thought I’d just pass that amount along to you in the form of savings and what I hope is an irresistible offer. There you have it. You can’t lose, no matter what happens. The only danger you have is waiting too long and missing out on the opportunity. Our Super-Tune Up can save you up to 33% off your utility bills! Call now for your appointment... 694-8524.
