Depew edges Lancaster in rivalry series’ 87th installment By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
If given the choice, would the Depew football team rather win a division title, or its rivalry game with Lancaster? “Oh,” senior captain Josh Sugg hollered Friday night (Oct. 17), “beat Lancaster!” Having lost out on the Class B Central division title by a touchdown, the Wildcats held on for a more meaningful 13-7 victory in the 87th Lancaster-Depew battle before an overflow crowd on a muddy Foyle-Kling Field “Winning this game is something I am going to remember for the rest of my life,” said Depew quarterback Dylan Sekuterski, who passed for 94 yards and rushed for 85. Junior running back Matt Poblocki rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns as Depew (6-1) gained confidence and momentum heading into the Class B playoffs. Even with senior running back Nick Perrine sidelined by a hamstring injury and further injuries along the offensive line, Depew was able to rack up 235 yards on the ground against the bigger Lancaster front. “The offensive line played its best game of the year,” Sekuterski said. The game saw three touchdowns scored in the first 18 minutes before it became a defensive struggle. Neither team advanced into the red zone for the remainder of the night. Lancaster (3-4) came quite close in the final minute. After recovering a fumbled punt snap at the Depew 42 with 34 seconds remaining,

Quarterback Dan Speyer and the Lancaster football team fell to rival Depew, 13-7, on Oct. 17 at Foyle-Kling Field in Lancaster. Lancaster got down to the 20 when sophomore receiver LG Castillo took a crossing pass from junior quarterback Dan Speyer and weaved his way to the sideline.
Lancaster spiked the ball once and then took three shots at the end zone in the final 13 seconds. Two passes slipped through Castillo’s hands. “It just wasn’t in the cards
for us,” Lancaster coach Chris Dickson said. The closest Lancaster had gotten before that was the Depew 31 on a 38-yard reception by senior Dan Emerson.

Depew girls soccer upends JFK in upset fashion
By Dave Ricci
It was a chilly and damp afternoon. But a celebratory “Gatorade” shower was a welcomed experience for St. Mary’s coach Chris Glenn. After the game, Glenn, in his first season coaching the Lancers, stood in the middle of the team huddle and proudly stated, “I’ve got one thing to say. St. Mary’s football is back!” The Lancers were indeed back in a big way as they handed St. Joe’s a stunning 51-26 loss Oct. 18 at the Robert T. Scott Athletic Complex. “We started back in the middle of June with nine kids,” said Glenn. “To get to this point and beat a great program like St. Joe’s, who I have the utmost respect for. I’m proud of my kids. I’m proud of our kids. I’m proud of our school.”

Ashley Rackley celebrated her 15th birthday by leading the Depew girls soccer team to a sectional playoff victory. Rackley, the Wildcats’ sophomore leading scorer, netted a hat trick by halftime Monday as Depew won 7-1 at JFK in a Section VI Class B prequarterfinal. “I’m going to tell her to have a birthday more often,” Depew coach Larry Jones quipped. Senior captain Caitlin Augustyn had two goals and two assists as Depew (3-13) won its first game in over a month. The No. 17 seed Wildcats advanced to face No. 1 seed City Honors at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Johnnie B. Wiley Stadium in Buffalo.
Depew’s move up to ECIC III this season hurt its sectional seeding, but prepared the team for the postseason, Jones said. “We have been in division four, where JFK plays, for a number of years,” Jones said. “There are a number of good teams in division four, but in division three, it is a lot of A schools who are ranked. It’s tough competition, tough to get wins. ... “This was an opportunity to play an opponent similar to us. And that’s about as well as we can play. We moved the ball better than I’ve ever seen.” Depew scored in the first 30 seconds of the game, and led 5-0 by halftime. Senior defenders Morgan Grosch and Alyssa Klaffka scored in the second half for the Wildcats. “We all talked and we passed very well and kept our heads up,” Grosch said. “We all supported each other.”

Ice Pavillion houses sled hockey for first time By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
Sled hockey made its debut at the Depew Ice Pavilion over the weekend with the inaugural Saints Hockey Club Sled Classic. The rink is now believed to be one of just four fully sled-accessible facilities in the Northeast after recent renovations. The $13,000 project leveled the bench areas with the playing surface so players can stay in their sleds while getting on and off the ice. The white boards on the benches were also replaced with plexiglass. Renovations were funded by money repaid to the Saints Hockey Club by a former treasurer convicted of embezzlement. Sled hockey follows most of the rules of standard ice hockey with some modifications for players

Athletes sit on sleds with two skate blades underneath and maneuver around the ice using shortened sticks with metal picks on one end. Paralympic gold medalist and Lancaster native Adam Page pushed for the renovations at the Depew Ice Pavilion since becom-
ing a member of the Saints Hockey Club board. The Saints Hockey Club Sled Classic drew seven teams from New York, Ontario, Pennsylvania and New York for the threeday event. Community members were also given the opportunity to try out sled hockey during a break in the games.
“It’s awesome for the Depew Ice Pavilion to host this tournament,” Deputy Mayor Jules said. “Welcoming these incredible athletes and people from all over to attend the games and visit our village.” Page helped his Buffalo Sabres Sled Hockey Team win the championship on Sunday. He scored the game-winner in overtime of Saturday’s semifinal. “It’s awesome to have another rink that is suited for sled hockey. It’s great exposure for the sport,” Page said. “Hopefully disabled people that are out in the community come out and see the sport and maybe join.” Page, 22, won a gold medal with the U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey team last year in Sochi, Russia and is on the roster the U.S. team that will play in the sled hockey world championships from April 24 to May 2 at HarborCenter.

Poblocki scored his second touchdown from 1 yard out midway through the second quarter to give Depew a 7-point lead. A defensive holding penalty in the end zone preceded the scoring play. Lancaster punted on its first three possessions before senior Justin Hersey broke off a 62-yard touchdown run one minute into the second quarter. Depew blocked the extra point to preserve its 7-6 lead. Poblocki put Depew ahead five minutes into the game, busting through tacklers around midfield on his way to a 62-yard touchdown run up the right sideline. Speyer was 16 of 27 passing for 161 yards and two interceptions. Hersey rushed for 86 yards in relief of senior captain Ryan Ritter. “I thought our defense played great,” Wilson said. “We just battled all night.” Lancaster will play at Kenmore West at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Class AA playoffs. Depew finished in a threeway tie with Cheektowaga and Maryvale atop the Class B Central standings, but finished second in the division due to point differential, its loss to
Cheektowaga, and its win at Maryvale. The Wildcats left Lancaster knowing they will be the sixth seed in the Class B playoffs, but not yet knowing their opponent. “We won, now we’re done here,” an emotional Sugg said. “Time to move on, and look forward to the future.” ••• As part of the Great American Rivalry Series, the United State Marine Corp made a scholarship presentation to one player from each team. An alumnus from each school was also inducted into the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame. Lancaster’s scholarship winner was Emerson, a threeyear varsity letterman who starts at tight end and defensive end. Emerson is a member of the basketball team and the National Honor Society, an officer in the Math Honor Society, and treasurer of the StudentAthlete Activities club. He plans to major in defense and strategic studies at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Wojcik was Depew’s scholarship winner. The senior two-way end is also a mem-
ber of Depew’s lacrosse and track teams and the Varsity “D” Club. He plans to major in mechanical and aerospace engineering at RIT. Leonard Olesky, a fullback and linebacker for Depew from 1957-60, and Carl Kuras, a Lancaster halfback from 196264, were inducted the Hall of Fame inductees. Olesky led a rushing attack that totaled 405 yards in Lancaster’s 1960 win. He was an ECIC all-star and a first-team all-Western New York selection. Kuras scored a touchdown in the 1964 game and went on to become the football coach and athletic director at Cleveland Hill. He is a founding member of the Trench Trophy Award. ••• Prior to the game, Lancaster’s captains presented a $250 check to Donovan Metz toward the refurbishing of the basketball courts at Keysa Park in honor of his older brother James Metz, who died in a small plane crash Sept. 27. James Metz was a freshman at Lancaster who participated on the junior varsity swim team as an eighth-grader.

Anthony Stitt and St. Mary’s improved to 5-2 in the win over St. Joe’s. The Monsignor Martin Association tilt was a textbook example of a game won in the trenches. The Lancers’ line wasn’t as big as the Marauders, but it used every ounce of fight it had to open up space for the Lancers’ skill players to get the job done. “Credit to our line. Credit to our running backs,” said Glenn. “Credit to everybody. It was a great team victory.” St. Mary’s QB Takal Molson rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns and was 9 for 17 for 116 yards and three TDs through the air as the Lancers’ offense struck with lightning-like precision, scoring on seven of its nine possessions. The Marauders, who made a nice comeback
in the third quarter, scoring three touchdowns to pull within 36-26, could only walk off the field in stunned silence as their season of frustration continues. Dropping to 3-4, the Marauders have yet to win back-to-back games this year and continue to be dogged by slow starts as opponents have now outscored them 59-7 in the first quarter this season. “Lack of discipline,” said St. Joe’s head coach Dennis Gilbert. “Absolutely lack of discipline. That’s what it is. Lack of mental toughness.” St. Joe’s Darren Thompson rushed for 165 yards on 13 carries and scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter, making it 14-7 St. Mary’s. Thompson’s TD was set up by Pete Mas-
ters’ fifth interception of the year. St. Mary’s also owned the clock with a 29:00-19:00 edge in time of possession. That was highlighted by a 7:30 drive in the fourth that culminated with Molson’s 1-yard TD run to make it 44-26. Jake Concannon had two TD receptions for St. Mary’s, which comes away with a huge confidence boost of picking up just its second win over St. Joe’s in 15 games. “It’s huge,” said Glenn. “I believe this is the first time in a while, maybe going back to 2002 where St. Mary’s has beaten St. Joe’s. That’s huge. I told the kids all week that if we were physical and we did our jobs that we’d win the game.”

Ally Oswian scored the lone goal for JFK (2-11) Depew goalkeeper Allison Torsey, a junior who is on track in June, made six saves. Rackley now has eight goals and 18 points on the season. “She has done so much
for us this season,” Grosch said. “She’s great at passing and she’s our only lefty on the team.” Added Jones, “We’re looking for great things for her her in the future.” For her part, Rackley relished the opportunity to
extend her sophomore season and keep playing with this group of seniors. “The seniors have made it a great experience,” Rackley said. “I always had something to look forward to after practice.”

FROM the SIDELINES Bills’ Orton getting involved, makes appearance at Doodle Bugs By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR
Having led the Bills to a pair of last-second comeback victories in his first three games under center for them, Kyle Orton has certainly endeared himself to fans in Buffalo of late. He endeared himself to a much younger contingent of fans on Tuesday (Oct. 21). Orton traded in his playbook for a children’s book when he made an appearance at Doodle Bugs! on Red Tail Drive in Orchard Park to read Rosemary Wells’ “Bunny Cakes” to 3- and 4-year-olds at the daycare center. The 10th-year NFL veteran has only been in Buffalo for a couple of months since signing as a free agent at the conclusion of training camp, but he’s already immersed himself in the Buffalo community. “Everything has been great [since coming to Buffalo],” Orton said. “Everyone has been great to us. We live in a great neighborhood and have made a
bunch of friends already. “It’s nice being in a small, close-knit community.” Orton and his wife, Bridget, are tied to Doodle Bugs through their daughter Olivia’s enrollment in the program there. Olivia, 3, was among the many children on hand to listen to Orton read Wells’ tale of a grocery store-bound Bunny on a quest to bake a cake. Orton, who grew up enjoying children’s books like “Curious George” and the “Berenstain Bears”, suggested that it was a gratifying experience. “I love being around kids and anything you can do to help kids is great,” he said. “[Doodle Bugs] has been great to us. Coming to Buffalo late, we got Olivia right into school and she loves it here. “Friday afternoons, I come pick her up here with my wife and it’s the best half-hour of my week. So anything I can do to come and help out I’m going to do.” Orton is one of a flurry of Bills that have gotten involved in the Buffalo community of late. Among

Bills QB Kyle Orton, whose 3-year-old daughter Olivia is a student at Doodle Bugs, read to a group of children at the daycare center on Oct. 21. them, center Eric Wood teamed up with Carly’s Club for a Jocktails event a few weeks ago, Keith Rivers appeared at PS 79 in Buffalo in support of the school’s launch of a Fuel Up to Play 60 campaign, and Brandon Spikes chaired the Buffalo Zoo’s ‘Adopt an Animal’ program and appeared at the zoo for a meet and great with fans in September. Additionally, a host of Bills are involved in the
organization’s ticket donation program and were in Niagara Falls for the Bills’ ‘Pinktober’ event earlier this month. “We have a lot of guys on our team that give back to the community and spend a lot of time and effort doing so,” Orton said. “I think all of our players know it’s important and they do a good job with it.” While Orton and the Bills were off on Tuesday, with a visit to the AFC East’s last-
place 1-6 New York Jets on the horizon Sunday (Oct. 26), it was back to the playbook for them on Wednesday. The team eked out a home victory over Minnesota last week when Orton guided the offense on what seemed like an improbable 80-yard drive in the final minutes that was capped off by top pick Sammy Watkins’ game-winning touchdown reception with 1 second left. It was Orton’s second display of late-game heroics since joining the Bills. He led the team on a lastminute drive against Detroit two weeks ago and helped to set up Dan Carpenter’s game-winning 58yard field goal with 4 seconds left. “Hopefully we don’t have to make it a fourthquarter game all the time and we can play better earlier in the game, but the wins have been exciting,” said Orton, who backed up Tony Romo in Dallas the last two seasons. “They’ve been fun. We’ll take them any way we can get them and hopefully we can keep
on doing it.” It’s possible if Orton continues to put up the numbers he has through three games. In leading the Bills to a 2-1 record since taking over for second-year QB EJ Manuel, Orton’s thrown for 890 yards and five touchdowns, numbers that prorate to over 4,500 yards and 25 touchdowns in a 16-game season. He’s just grateful to have the opportunity to start again. “I love it here,” Orton said. “I’ve made that known and I think everybody in the organization knows how much I appreciate that they’ve brought me in.” The Bills have a chance to improve to 5-3 when they take on the Jets at 1 p.m. inside MetLife Stadium. The Jets have lost six straight since opening the season with a win. Percy Harvin, who New York traded a conditional pick for last week, will make his Jets debut as a receiver and kick returner. The game will be broadcast on CBS.
DeMarsh earns 100th victory, still has one goal in mind By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
Nick DeMarsh took over the struggling women’s soccer team at Buffalo State College a dozen years ago with one goal in mind. “I wanted to win the conference and represent this school on the national level at the NCAAs,” said DeMarsh, a three-time All-SUNYAC player for the Bengals who assisted the men’s program for four years prior to becoming the women’s head coach. That has not happened yet. “So we still have some work to do,” DeMarsh is quick to point out. But the program has come a long way under DeMarsh’s direction. DeMarsh entered this weekend’s homestand with 101 career victories. In the 21 seasons prior to
DeMarsh taking over, the Bengals won 114 games. “I have to give a lot of credit to Jerry Boyes, our athletic director, for allowing me to build the program and build the team,” DeMarsh said. “This was a situation that really needed to be built from the ground up.” DeMarsh was teaching at Native American Magnet school and coaching the Bengals part-time during his first two seasons, before Boyes promoted him to a full-time coaching position. “When you are a part-time coach, you are going to get part-time results,” DeMarsh said. “We really didn’t start winning until I got the job fulltime.” The Bengals have posted winning records in seven of the past 11 seasons, and last year finished second in the SUNYAC. With a very young roster this
season, the Bengals are 6-7-1 and 3-4 in conference play. Buffalo State hosts New Paltz (8-6-2, 2-3-2) at 3 p.m. Friday. A win would solidify the Bengals at sixth place in the SUNYAC standings and keep them out of the play-in round of the postseason tournament. “We want to take it one game at a time, and really, all that matters for us is our next game,” DeMarsh said. Buffalo State hosts defending champion Oneonta at 10 a.m. Saturday and wraps up the regular season Oct. 29 with a non-conference home game against St. John Fisher. When DeMarsh took over the Bengals program he had players who weren’t even starters on their high school teams. DeMarsh, who lives in North Buffalo and is the director of coaching for the Kenmore Soccer Club, has

But the Bengals are captained by local recruits in senior Liz Malinowski (Williamsville South) and junior Gabrianna Boldinski (Ken-
more East). “Liz came to us with great experience in terms of highlevel club soccer and has really learned the ropes of college soccer,” DeMarsh said. “She’s a very smart player, a good student, and a good example for our younger players.” Boldinski is “probably the best center defender in the SUNYAC,” DeMarsh said. “She’s an absolute monster of a ball-winner. I could probably player her at any position on the field.” Sophomrore midfielder Katie Shaw (Newfane) has been key contributor for the Bengals this year and is pushing to be a captain next season, DeMarsh said. With 100 wins in his review mirror, DeMarsh has no plans to stop before he reaches his ultimate goal. “I’m pretty stubborn,” he said. “I would never leave the job undone.”
Simonick inducted into Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame By Catherine Miller THE SUN CORRESPONDENT
It’s a good time to be a sports fan in Buffalo. The Pegula family has made more headlines than money recently – and the players on the Bills and Sabres are doing their best to make their owners proud. As Buffalo’s name rises to the top pages of nationwide sports news outlets, the newest group of local sports honorees were inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame on Oct 16 – and one of the inductees was the Old First Ward’s Robert “Rip” Simonick. By many measures, Rip Simonick has led a fairly basic life. He grew up in the Old First Ward amidst a great group of family and friends and attended Bishop Timon High School. He married the
love of his life, MaryAnn “Maize” McGuire, a Mount Mercy Academy alumni. He took a job just a few blocks away from his childhood home and has worked for the same company for the past 44 years, presently living about a half-hour from his original place of birth. Pretty standard by most counts. So why, then, when you ask a man like former Sabre Rob Ray to tell you one thing about Simonick, he just throws his hands up in the air and tells you that it’s impossible to say just one thing? Simonick doesn’t work for just any company. Simonick, known to many, is the head equipment manager of the Buffalo Sabres. He has designed specialized gear for players when they were in need, learned players’ preferences on how they liked their skates sharpened, and when equipment
was all set and they just needed someone to talk to – Simonick was there. What you may not realize is that Simonick has been with the Sabres since day one – and has never left – becoming the most skilled and tenured equipment manager in the league. He was there for the ups – like his favorite seasons in 1975 and 1999 – and he refuses to talk about the lows of the “no goal” days. Rip’s knowledge and expertise in the NHL goes well beyond his title as head equipment manager for the Sabres. “Rip is just a tremendous guy,” said Rob Ray of the man he introduced at the awards banquet for the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. “Everybody in the NHL franchise knows him and everyone respects him. He is the father of the fran-
chise.” Ray continued to share personal thoughts on his admiration for the man that knew exactly what equipment Ray needed to play and the words he needed to hear before heading onto the ice. “We were rookies together,” stated Gilbert Perreault, who took center ice in 1970 as Rip stood behind the scenes making sure the players had all they needed to play in the Sabres’ inaugural season, “Rip was a great guy then, and he’s a great guy now.” Other hockey names mimicked the views of Ray and Perreault. Ray rattled off dozens of other NHL names that look up to Simonick, the renowned equipment guru. Ice manager Bob Strianese and Digger Kennedy, father of NHL player Tim Kennedy, both spoke highly of their friendship with Si-
monick. Much of Simonick’s family still lives in the Old First Ward, and many attended the GBSHOF awards dinner, sharing similar thoughts on the greatness of Simonick. He had more family and friends attend the awards dinner than any other inductee. Simonick never stepped out on a professional field in uniform, never scored the winning goal and was never nominated as an MVP. Still, his name is known in the sports industry better than most and for more decades than many, and he is the only member of the NHL franchise to work from day one to today. Many NHLers state that it’s Simonick’s personality that makes him unique. In addition to his equipment expertise, it is his ability to listen when players need listening to that endears him
to so many. And if you ask Simonick – he believes he’s important to the game on a very basic level. “Hey, you can’t play the game without equipment,” Simonick said with a smile. Whether talking about hockey or life in general, Simonick is correct – and he has definitely brought forth the right equipment to help bring out the best in our players from the days of the French Connection, to the seasons when Ray and Brad May battled in corners with opposing players, to the present-day Pegula era. With everything that he has given to the game of hockey, there is one thing that he would like to get from it in return, and that is to see Lord Stanley’s Cup in Buffalo. But for now, he’s content to join a host of great names in the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame.

Close to You: The music of the Carpenters comes to Lancaster By Sallie Moppert
THE LANCASTER SUN REPORTER
Fans of the musical group The Carpenters will be in for a special treat this November. Musical group Close to You will be performing its show dedicated to The Carpenters called “Close to You: The Music of the Carpenters.” There will be two shows held at the Lancaster Opera House Saturday, Nov. 1 and Sunday, Nov. 2. This is the first time that Close to You will be performing at the opera house and the performances will be its New York debut. Bandleader Lisa Rock expressed her excitement about being able to bring her musical group’s passion for The Carpenters to the Western New York area. “I have always loved the music of The Carpenters,” Rock said. “I wrote a show about them years ago, but I wanted to make the show more accessible to the audience. I think that this new show will be a great time for the audience and a great way to keep the amazing music alive.”

Some of the songs include Superstar, Rainy Days and Mondays, Top of the World and, of course, Close to You. All of the songs will be performed in their original keys to keep them as close to
the way that The Carpenters performed them as possible. Hearing many of these wellknown songs will have the audience singing along with the performers, something, Rock said, that makes the Close to You show so unique. “One of things that people enjoy is that they hear songs that they know and can sing along to,” Rock explained. “This music reaches all age ranges because people can relate to the songs and they know the words. We also try to build a rapport with the audience and let them enjoy this unique experience to the fullest.” In addition to the songs that will be performed, Rock and her band mates will also
