Barker falls in Far West Regionals Raiders’ season comes to end in loss to East Rochester
By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
It has become a yearly tradition in Class C Field Hockey. Barker and East Rochester have met each of the last seven years in the Far West Regionals, and almost every time it is a classic. This was no different, but unlike the last two years, it was Barker who was on the losing end of a one-goal game as its undefeated season came to an end at the hands of East Rochester, 1-0, on Monday night (Nov. 10). After losing in the New York State semifinals, and squeezing by the Lady Bombers by one goal each of the last two seasons, Barker head coach Jeff Costello stressed the ability to score big goals in tight games, but on this night, the Lady Raiders were unable to find the back of the net. “It’s not disappointment in the team,” said Costello. “They played hard. You can’t take that away from them. It wasn’t like they didn’t leave it all out on the field, we just struggled to finish and [Taylor Baxter] and their overall team speed caused a lot of problems for us.” The Lady Raiders started the game strong, controlling possession for much of the first 10 minutes of the game, but East Rochester star Taylor Baxter was finally able to get a bit of breathing room as she carried the ball coastto-coast. After a scrum in front of the net the ball finally found its way to the stick of Meghan Brock, who put it home with just over 19 minutes to play in the first half for what turned out to be the game-winner. While Barker had no shortage of possession time, they

Another big factor in the early going was how well the Lady Bombers bottled up star forward Gabby Clare until late in the game. “We tried to make some adjustments at halftime,” said Costello. “We tried to figure out ways to Gabby more involved in the play because
she wasn’t.” Clare would finally get loose in the second half as she and Melissa Grosshans found ways to stick handle through opposing players time and time again. With just under 10 minutes to play it appeared as if the Lady Raiders had tied the game after Clare sent one towards the net but Erin Greenwald’s shot rang off of
the post and barely stayed out of the net. Throughout their careers Clare and Grosshans have been able to manufacture points for Barker when they needed it most, but it was not to be as seven great careers came to an end for Costello’s club. “It’s tough because we have seven seniors on the team and they just played their last field
hockey game,” said Costello. “So telling them anything right now isn’t going to make that sting go away. You just have to try and get them to buy into the fact that they have had great careers, they have done a lot for our program, we’ve won a lot of games and we’ve done a lot of things with this group of seniors. We’ll have to get over it in time and start building for next year.”
Barker will have to say goodbye to seven standouts that helped produce for sectional championships and two bids to the state final four as Clare, Grosshans, Kelsey Blackley, Morgan Brown, Elizabeth Luckman, Alexandrea VeRost and Renee Levy all leave for graduation.

Thunderwolves think Lockport’s 200 free relay regionals loss is fuel for ‘14-15 team sees success again By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
The 2013-14 season was one to remember for the NCCC women’s basketball team, but the final game may have been one to forget. In just his second season at the helm, head coach Nate Beutel led his Thunderwolves to a school-record 25 wins, but they came up just two points short in the NJCAA Regional Semifinals. With several very important pieces returning from last year, Beutel and his team don’t just see returning to the semis as an expectation, but as a form of motivation. “It’s a motivating point for our girls to get that opportunity again and not let it slip through our fingers like we did last year. I think that was the reason why most of our returning girls were among our hardest workers in

Clark attempted to fill it with several different swimmers, but midway through the season he finally found the right fit with junior Sarah Yenson. They had tried to use Yenson earlier in the season, but they had little success, that is until just before the Niagara Frontier League Championships when the previous three swimmers went to Clark and asked to have her put back on the relay team and they blew away the competition by nearly four seconds. “We were looking at everyone who had the time,” said Kristina Connolly. “During the season we put Sarah in the relay because we are all so comfortable together. She was like the missing piece and we got it.” When the foursome first swam together they had a time of nearly one minute and 45 seconds, but at the NFL meet, they swam a time of 1:41.07 and have swam as fast as
1:40.93 this season. While five seconds may not seem like a big difference, in a race that is almost an eternity, so to be able to drop that much off a time is quite an accomplishment. “I just think it was more in our minds,” said Yenson. “You just have to set yourself to go faster and it’s up to you. It’s just a 50 so you have to move your arms faster and kick.” It also doesn’t hurt to have the school record holder in the 50-meter freestyle and NFL Swimmer of the Year in Pollock, as well as a swimmer in Elizabeth Connolly that holds more than one school mark. Going to states last year was a whirlwind experience for the Connolly twins and Pollock, but this year they will know what to expect when they get to Ithaca.

World record relay team had no idea it broke a record By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
June 16, 1968. That was that date that history was made as eight high school students from Lockport broke the world record in a 100-mile relay. Much has been said about that historic moment 46 years ago on that cinder track, but perhaps the most fascinating part of the feat is the story behind how it happened and how the eight runners had no idea that they had set a record until they were well into their adult lives. On that Sunday in 1968, Lockport head coach John Chew recruited senior runners Bobby Brown, Jim Rycyna and Charlie Quagliana, along with junior Brian Brooks and four freshmen in George Bickford, Jeff Hulshoff, Franklyn Pfeil and Jeff Watkins to run the 100-mile relay, which was a common occurrence for teams at the time. With the exception of Hulshoff, whose brother ran
the relay just a few years prior, none of the runners had any idea as to what it would take to complete the task that day and they certainly had no idea that it would take them seven hours, 27 minutes and 55 seconds to complete. “I had no concept whatsoever,” said Brown. “I had no idea how long we were going to run. The only thing I remember from that day was someone came up to me and he said ‘Brownie good luck, I’ll be done after I’m done working today.’ Meaning he was going to work his eight hour shift. I kind of looked at him and said I’ll be long gone by then. I had no idea it would take that long.” Not only did they have no true concept of what they were getting themselves into, but after breaking the record that day, they had no idea that they had done so. It was not until Brown encountered Geoff Hollister, one of the first employees of Nike, while serving in the U.S. Navy nearly 25 years after the event. During a conversation one day, Hollister hinted that

That time is indeed considered a world record in the Alternative Book of World Records, but is not in the Guinness Book of World Records, purely based on the format. Guinness recognizes a record of nearly an hour slower by
a team of ten members from Ada, OK that ran in one mile intervals, compared to the intervals of 110 yards and 220 yards run by the Lockport team of eight. That format was, of course, the planning of Chew. “One thing we all agree upon is without the format that John Chew presented we would
Perez to miss start of season due to injury “Hoops” from page B1 Perez, a Medina graduate, started all 30 games last season, averaging 7.8 points and 8.9 rebounds, but will miss the start of the season with an injury. But Beutel does have a luxury. Moyer, an Albion graduate and Perez’s best friend, was the first player off the bench for NCCC last season and she will step into a starting role with no hesitation this year. “It’s going pretty well so far,” said Moyer. “I’ve done my part so far. Ever since Alba hurt herself, I’ve had to step up so that’s what I’ve been doing.” Moyer ’s improvement this season could be a huge difference maker for the Thunderwolves, as she will be expected to add more of a scoring touch than last year and she will be a force on the
boards. It is no coincidence that Moyer and Perez also led the charge in offseason workouts, as both worked as hard as any player in the program to get better. “We did shooting and dribbling workouts,” Moyer said. “Last year my shooting and dribble was not even close to being as good as this year. All summer I worked on my dribbling and get myself back.” NCCC also brings back point guard Jessie DeWaters, a Roy-Hart alumnus, after an All-Region season last year that saw her stuff the stat sheet. DeWaters averaged 11.3 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 2.4 steals a year ago and she is back to help lead the team.
“We have a much bigger team than last year,” said DeWaters. “So we all have to work on knowing every position on the floor instead of one spot. We are working on our chemistry as a team. That’s a big thing this year because last year we were such a small team so we get along really well. Now it’s much bigger so we have to work on chemistry on the floor.” Having so many key players back also allows NCCC to build upon some concepts and schemes that they ran last year, but according to Beutel, the most important thing that his returnees bring to the table is leadership for the new players. The Thunderwolves do have to replace the double-double performances of Kristine
Ripson last year, but Beutel has supplemented the loss of her abilities with several talented recruits. He brought in a friend of Welch’s from Albany, Merrick Rowland, who will be a dangerous threat from behind the 3-point arc, as well as Rochester City-Catholic and Ronald McDonald Game Most Valuable Player Breyanna Cason, Buffalo-Olmstead graduate Ericka Thompson and 6-foot-3 center Tamia Jones. “It’s very rare to return three starters and six players from the year before,” said Beutel. “We are very lucky with that. That just means those kids have bought in and believed in the program and are committed to taking our program to the next level.”
have never broken the record,” said Rycyna. “It was his brainchild. The key was the format because so many people have tried to run quarters, they’ve run miles, they’ve run 25 miles but the key was Chew.” Chew was aware of the records and the most efficient way to run the relay, but at the end, he opted not to pursue any publications with his team’s accomplishment. The former Lockport Track Club president had said that he wanted them to run this event for the pure enjoyment of running and to see what kind of speed that they could build up. “A coach’s great attribute is to make a difficult thing fun for you and only reveal enough information to get it done,” said Watkins. “He was good at that. He was a good communicator. He made you think that that you could do it but he also expected you to do it.” While two of the star runners in Brown and Rycyna were seniors at the time, those four freshmen never attempted to run the relay again, and they believe firmly that they would have never been able to dupli-
cate that particular day. From the beautiful weather of the day to the fact that nobody got injured while running, each of those runners believes that there was something magical about June 16, 1968. “Something about that day with the fact that nobody got hurt and nobody buckled,” said Pfeil. “I don’t care who you have today, it was sort of amazing, and if you got eight great runners today somebody is going to come up with a problem. We didn’t come up with that problem.” All of the runners also believe that it was a blessing to find out that they had set a record later in life, as opposed to knowing that day. It has given them the chance to get together to reminisce, and it has also brought them closer together and it’s a great story to tell. “It’s kind of cool,” said Hulshoff. “Our kids now are saying ‘you really did that?’ That is really cool.” The legacy of those eight runners will continue to live on forever in Lockport.

Erin Greenwald is one of several starters set to return next year.
On the bright side, the Lady Raiders will return several star players such as Erin and Madison Greenwald, Emma Duffy, Kelsie Engert, Erika Moeller and Rebecca Stoloski. One bright side to the evening was the play of junior goal keeper Caitlyn Mason, who made seven saves in the contest to help keep Barker in the game. “Obviously we had to try and score,” said Costello. “That game could have been a lot worse than what it was. She came up huge, diving and clearing balls that were high on her. Her play was definitely impressive.” Barker finishes the season 16-1-1.
On deck for Lockport swimmers is school record “Swim” from page B1 “Last year it was all new because we had never gone to states before so it was really exciting,” said Pollock. “It’s still super exciting to go but now we know what to do and are more focused. I think it’s that different because we are still pumped and excited about it.”
The next goal for the group to accomplish is breaking the school record of 1:39.11 for the 200-meter freestyle relay, which could be a tall task as it would require each of the girls to drop five-tenths of a second of their time. Considering how much the team has shaved off of the
original mark that they swam, it is certainly not out of the question that they finish the season with a bang and break a record held by previous Lockport swimming coach Laci McKenna. “It would be cool because our coach last year holds it,” said Elizabeth Connolly. “We
were joking around last year about it and we were so close. So this year to just make it happen and be our moniker for senior year would be pretty sick.” The girls also see states as an opportunity to grow closer not only as a team, but with the rest of the swimmers from
Section VI that will be in attendance. “It’s more to go and just experience it all again,” said Kristina Connolly. “We want to get close with our team like we were last year and have fun with the whole section. To break the record is one of our goals. We aren’t worried
about where we are placed; we’re worried about our own personal goals.” Lockport will be seeded 32nd when the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships begin on Nov. 21 at Ithaca College.
Beilein aims to build continuity on young NCCC team By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
The offseason leading up to the 2014-15 season for the Niagara County Community College men’s basketball team was one of uncertainty. Head coach Bill Beilein found himself having to replace several key pieces from last year’s 22-7 squad and several key recruits that opted to leave the team just prior to the season. Beilein has done what he does best, though. He was able to bring in some new talent and return some top players from last year to help in trying to improve on last season’s first-round exit in the NJCAA Tournament. “I think it’s getting those sophomores to lead,” said Beilein. “As far as getting the
extra workouts, the more reps they are getting the better off the freshmen are going to be. They are going to be a little more knowledgeable of the system.” Most high school coaches will get a star player for three to four years, while a four-year college coach will get a player for each of those year. But for a junior college like NCCC, Beilein only gets two years out of a player, so building continuity on the team can be difficult. Not only do the Thunderwolves have nine freshmen on the squad this season, but they lost five freshmen that contributed greatly to the success of the team last year. “The cycling process will drive you crazy,” said Beilein. “We’ve got nine freshmen this year; we have one kid that was a redshirt last year so he has a little bit of experience as far
as practicing with us. It’s really about the kids and finding kids with an IQ background of basketball so they can translate what you are trying to teach them quickly.” On the bright side, one of the three players that return from last year just happens to be the team’s leading scorer, Eli Jones. The 6-foot-5 Fairport, New York native averaged 21.5 points per game last year to go along with 7.1 rebounds per game and is primed to make the jump to earn a scholarship at a Division I or Division II school following the season. “I worked out,” said Jones. “I took the weight room really seriously. I lifted every single day, I ran two and a half miles five times a week, and I really worked on my shot and ball handling for this year.” Another key returner is
starting guard Sheldon Zablotny-Crosby, who is coming off of a season in which he averaged 12.7 points, 3.9 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. The Erie, Pennsylvania native will also be switching from point guard to shooting guard with hopes of adding another scoring punch. The Thunderwolves will also be relying on 6-foot-7 forward Jordan Green, who saw action in just nine games as a freshman. Beilein believes Green can be an inside-out type of player that can block shots and rebound on the defensive end. “Sheldon Zablotny is a returning guy who is moving to the two-guard position,” said Beilein. “We think he is really going to be able to put up bigger numbers points-wise for us. Jordan Green has a lot of experience for us and he has got
it going early. We’re a system that one guy is not going to go off. We like to share the ball.” NCCC will insert two freshmen into the starting lineup with forward Francisco Williams from Queens, New York and guard Corey Mendez out of Baltimore. Guards Mike McQuillen, Luis Hernandez, Isaiah Primus-Belgrave and McKinley graduate Deonte Bell will all see significant playing time, along with forward Aaron Jackson. Beilein thought he had some top local talent when he signed former Barker star Jake Haight in May, but he and former RoyHart standout Alex Stoddard opted not to pursue college basketball careers with the Thunderwolves. Bell and Medina graduate Dan Brown are the only two players from Western NewYork
on the roster. “We love to get the local guys,” said Beilein. “We just haven’t had much luck in the last couple years. Some of the local guys are living at home and I don’t know if they want to make the full commitment for what it takes to be a college basketball player.” While it may take some time to build continuity and for the freshmen to get used to playing at the college level, the goal for several of the players is to bring home an NJCAA Regional Championship this year. “I really want to come out with a regional championship this year,” said Jones. “I’m going to do whatever it takes as a player and I know that my team will do whatever their role is. I feel like that’s all of our goals this year and I’m just trying to make that happen.”

Clean slate: NT hockey takes the ice Lumberjacks get to work looking to build on strong year
By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER
Even before the puck dropped, the Jacks couldn’t wait to get back to work. As the North Tonawanda hockey team stepped onto the ice preparing for the start of the WNY Federation season, it shook off the cobwebs with some informal workouts and skill drills at hockey outlet. “We got better as the week went on,” said NT coach Alan Zbytek. “Getting that camaraderie with the guys all back together on the ice again.” Eager to get back to work, the Jacks are coming off of a strong 2013-14 season. They went 11-4-1 for 23 points to finish in second place in Division III, just one point behind first-place Lewiston-Porter. Leading the way will be top scoring threats Curtis Vivian and Sam Rydzewski. Vivian had 21 points in 16 games, leading the Jacks in power-play goals (three) and goals (16). Rydzewski, meanwhile, had two power-play goals while his 16 helpers and 28 total points both led the team. Senior Chris Miller returns to lead the defense. The Jacks will be moving forward without goalie Kyle Painter, who will be playing for the Regals this season. Painter, who was the backbone of the Jacks the past three seasons, went 8-4-1 last year with a 1.83 goals against and 590 minutes played. Junior Christian McIntyre will be counted on to fill the

Sabres/Edmonton game on Nov. 7. While it gave players a chance to show their skills in front of a crowd, Zybtek said this type of night was more about creating those all important memories.
“I look at the shootout with the Sabres as being more of a memory maker, lifetime event for some of the kids,” said Zbytek. “They don’t look at it as competitive, trying to win. I just send kids, three
of the five kids I sent don’t get a lot of ice time. It’s just kind of a way of rewarding them for being on the team and creating a memory they may never have again in their lives.”
Patience pays off for former St. Francis goalie Diebold By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR
Sometimes it just takes a little patience. Patience on the ice and patience in the classroom. For RPI senior netminder Scott Diebold (St. Francis High School), patience is something that became a virtue. After playing 45 to 50 games at St. Francis High School and being the main man at the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey league, Diebold had to wait his turn when heading to college. It was a different feeling
for him, but one he understood and got used to. “Going from playing 45 to 50 games in high school, I struggled with it a little bit,” Diebold recently said by phone. “You just have to wait your chance. You can’t worry about what you can’t control.” It would have been easy for Diebold to sit and pout over the fact he wasn’t able to get a lot of playing time early on. Instead, however, he used his time wisely, getting better at the craft he has been honing since he was a little boy. It also helped that he has had a great teacher in coach Seth Appert. Appert took the
reins during the 2006-07 season and he has worked with Diebold to get better in all aspects of his game. “One of the best goalie coaches in the game,” stated Diebold. “Inevitable that you will get better.” After seeing limited action during his freshman and sophomore campaigns, Diebold took the bull by the horns last season and played in 36 games — 35 of which were starts — boasting a 2.50 goals against average. The fact that he was able to get back on the ice regularly was rewarding for him as he put in the extra work during practice and before games.
“You just have to treat every practice like it’s a game,” Diebold said. “It’s been a blast.” It also has been a blast in the classroom. But it didn’t start that way in the beginning. After being used to a routine in high school, when Diebold went off to play junior, he didn’t have to take any classes. It was just hockey all the time every day. So when he entered RPI and tackled the academic rigors that accompany the school, it took the former Red Raider some time getting used to the flow again. “I was used to laying around playing hockey,” laughed Diebold. “School
was on another level. It blindsided me at first. I had to learn how to study again.” And learn he did. The industrial and management engineering major thanks St. Francis High School for getting him ready for the academic rigors that RPI present. “Academic are unreal at Frannies,” said Diebold. “They hold you to a high academic standard. It puts you in a different category.” Another category Diebold would like to be in is that of a professional hockey player after he graduates. He sees the success of some of his friends that have gone on to either play in the East Coast
Hockey League (ECHL), American Hockey League (AHL) or overseas in Europe. The fact that they have had success gives him reason that he will be able to succeed as well. If it doesn’t workout, however, then he will always have a backup plan. “I have been at the rink with these guys, played with these guys. Vinny is doing well and Anthony is doing well overseas,” said Diebold. “I definitely want to play hockey somewhere. But if it doesn’t work out, I will go back to school in Buffalo.” Always the patient person.
THE COLLEGE Mann, UB to make first appearance in Women’s College Cup By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
Courtney Mann could barely believe her eyes. Sitting in the front row of the team meeting room at UB Stadium, Mann saw the word “BUFFALO” flash on the big screen during the Women’s College Cup selection show. “It was one of the most
incredible things I’ve ever seen,” said Mann, a Frontier High School graduate and senior captain on the UB women’s soccer team. “Being a local kid, seeing that name up there, that’s what you dream about.” As a 15 seed, UB (16-23) will face No. 6-ranked Penn State (17-3) in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship at 7:30
p.m. Friday (Nov. 14) on the Nittany Lions home field in University Park, Pa. “It’s going to be a big challenge,” said junior Jackie Hall, the MAC Defensive Player of the Year. “But go big or go home, right?” Hall scored the winning goal in Sunday’s MAC Championship game at UB Stadium, capping off
a record-breaking run in which the Bulls went unbeaten at home (11-0-1) and in conference play (11-0-2). “This team has been making history all year long, so it’s another opportunity for us,” firstyear coach Shawn Burke said. UB’s only two losses have come on the road at No. 19 Virginia Tech and
Cornell. Penn State won its 16th Big 10 regular season championship this season but was upset in the conference tournament by Northwestern. This will be the Bulls first appearance in the Women’s College Cup following just the fourth team MAC team championship in UB’s history. “It starts at the top
with the leadership from our captains and seniors,” Burke said. Mann was one of eight UB players named to the all-conference teams. She was joined on the firstteam by Hall, MAC Offensive Player of the Year Katie Roberts, and goalkeeper Laura Dougall, who was also named MAC Freshman of the Year.

‘Weekend Update’ anchor connected to the Queen City By: Lauren Kirchmyer When Seth Meyers left the desk of “Weekend Update” on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” fans were wondering who would replace him. Although it looked as though it would be cast member Cecily Strong, Lorne Michaels asked the show’s head writer, Colin Jost, to fill Meyers’ shoes alongside comedian Michael Che. “Getting ‘Weekend Update’ has been the biggest moment of my life,” Jost said. “To perform on ‘SNL’ and be part of the cast and tradition is really cool.” But if you look at his life prior to his “Saturday Night Live” career, you may be surprised Jost is where he is today. “There are many people in my family history who worked in the engineering industry,” he explained. His father, an East Aurora native, worked for Struthers Wells in Buffalo, prior to moving to New York City to work for Procter & Gamble. Jost, on the other hand, enjoyed making people laugh while growing up in Staten Island. In sixth grade, he and his friends convinced their teacher to let them perform skits from “Saturday Night Live” for the class. When it came time to decide what he wanted to study for his undergrad however, Jost picked something far from comedy. The Harvard graduate studied the history and literature
of Russia and Britain because he enjoyed reading. “I didn’t know I could have a job in comedy. I thought it was just a fun thing to do on the side.” When he graduated college, Jost decided to submit a packet of his writing to “Saturday Night Live.” He didn’t hear back and six months later submitted a second packet. This time he received a phone call and went in for an interview with the show’s head writer, Tina Fey. She liked Jost and he moved on to another interview, with Michaels.
“At the end he was like, ‘I’ll be seeing you around,’” Jost said about the show’s creator and producer. “I was not sure what it meant. Then I got a call interpreting what Lorne said and I started the next week.” His writing received a lot of laughs and Jost worked his way up the “SNL” writing chain, earning him Emmy nominations along the way. Some of his favorite skits include when the cast sang Billy Joel’s “Goodnight Saigon” on Will Ferrell’s finale show, when Jonah Hill serenaded his “wife” for their anniversary

and when Vanessa Bayer portrayed Miley Cyrus after her performance on MTV’s Video Music Awards. His favorite guests to write for are the ones who have an inherent comedy in them, such as Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifanakis and Emma Stone. He hopes to someday have the chance to write skits for comedians Eddie Murphy and Stephen Colbert, as well as actors Kate Winslet and Michael Keaton. Outside of “Saturday Night Live,” Jost enjoys performing stand-up shows. “I’m a lot looser and goofier than the news anchor character I play on ‘Weekend Update,’” he said. To prepare for his shows, Jost spends time exploring the cities he’s performing in. Last week, Jost performed at Bear’s Den Showroom at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino. Before his show, he explored the American and Canadian sides of the falls and roamed around the city his father grew up in. Jost is also working on starting a career writing screenplays for movies. “It’s the hardest writing process because there’s so much going on. You have to make the script unique and funny and interesting for the viewer.” After having multiple screenplays rejected, or being accepted but having nothing created, his first movie finally came through. “Staten Island Summer,” a film filled with “Saturday Nigh Live” cast members about lifeguards who are spending their last week of summer together before they go away to college, is expected to be out in the spring or summer of 2015.

Girl Scouts of WNY to host two informational meetings in Lockport area It’s never too late for girls in grades K through 12 to join Girl Scouts, but why wait any longer to start the fun? Girl Scouts of Western New York is hosting two information sessions in December in Lockport for parents and girls to learn about Girl Scouts and register on the spot. The information sessions will be held: Friday, Dec. 5 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Lockport YWCA (32 Cottage St.) Saturday, Dec. 6 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Emmanuel United Methodist Church (75 East Ave.) Wondering what a Girl Scout does? The answer is whatever she chooses! Girl Scouting is all about the
girls and their interests. They might take a trip to places near or far, learn about science or engineering through building a model roller coaster, gain important financial literacy skills through the Girl Scout cookie program, or decide to go camping with their best friends to learn about nature. The opportunities are endless but three things are certain: The girls decide, the girls have fun, and the girls build important leadership skills that will stay with them throughout their lives. In fact, in a pulse poll conducted by Girl Scouts of the USA, 89 percent of parents and guardians said their daughter is happier because of Girl Scouts. Volunteers also greatly

benefit from being a part of Girl Scouts, as the Girl Scouts of the USA poll found that 88 percent of Girl Scout volunteers say their volunteer experience with Girl Scouts makes their life better. Anyone can become a Girl Scout volunteer; all that is needed is a willingness to help and guide girls and young women in your community while having fun! Girl Scout volunteers have a lasting impact on the girls they work with, and they are especially needed in Niagara County, Lockport and the greater Lockport area. Wayans to perform at Helium Comedy Club By Lauren Kirchmyer ENTERTAINMENT REPORTER
Comedy fans can “expect the unexpected” as funny guy Marlon Wayans takes the stage at Helium Comedy Club next weekend to perform stand up. Though he has performed at colleges throughout the area many times in the past, he is excited to perform his first show for “the locals.” “I really enjoy Buffalo,” he said. “People there are listeners, and I love listeners more than anything. Listening will make you laugh.” Wayans grew up with a funny family in the projects of New York City. As he and his nine brothers and sisters grew up, their work and their names became well known in the entertainment industry. “We always give each other advice and inspire each other with what we’re doing,” he said. He gained popularity in the early ’90s when he appeared in the sketch comedy series “In Living Color,” created by his brothers Keenan and Damon. Following in their footsteps, Way-
