Composting is an easy way to not only recycle, but also to help give your garden a head start. The spring planting season might seem like a long way away, but according to the environmentallyconscious educators over at Reinstein Woods, now is the perfect time to start creating nutrient-rich compost for your gardens. From 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, January 10, they’ll be holding an Indoor Worm Composting Workshop at their education center. Attendees will learn all about how to compost food scraps throughout the long winter months in

preparation for planting in the spring, and they’ll also get some tips on how to use the compost to keep their indoor plants healthy during the winter. Although composting has something of the reputation as something you do outside, it absolutely doesn’t have to be. “Worm composting can be done in a small plastic bin under your sink, so it doesn’t have to take up a lot of space,” says Meaghan Boice-Green, Center Director for Reinstein Woods. “The worms like a dark, warm environment, but I have heard of people successfully keeping a composting bin in their garage all winter long, as long as they are kept warm enough not to freeze. results are just as easy to see. With more and more people becoming increasingly aware of the fertilizers and chemicals that they’re putting on their plants, in their gardens and, in turn, into their bodies, composting is an easy, safe and rewarding way to provide your plants – both inside and out – with the added nutrition they need to thrive. “Red wiggler worms offer a great way to continue composting food scraps all winter,” says Boice-Green. “The composting workshop is designed to help people get started.” Compost starter kits will be available for purchase; the cost is $4 and $2 for Friends of Reinstein Woods members.

worms just won’t be as active as they are in a warmer environment.” Boice-Green also suggests keeping a composting bin in a mudroom, in a back hall, or in a basement – anywhere that’s consistently warm enough to keep the contents from freezing. In addition to the valuable compost that the worms turn food scraps into, they also produce something called “compost tea”. This pretty off-sounding liquid can be a life-giving compound throughout the winter months, as many people use it on their houseplants to give them a muchneeded nutritional boost through the winter. Dealing with loss through the holidays By Debra Kelly

COURIER CORRESPONDENT

For many people in Western New York this year, it will be the first time dealing with the holidays after the loss of a loved one. It can make family get-togethers and office parties a daunting challenge rather than a happy, beloved tradition, and learning some methods for coping with the grief of the holidays can make a huge difference in getting through them. Nancy Weil, Director of Bereavement Support at Catholic Cemeteries, knows better than anyone how difficult it can be to face the holidays, so full of happiness and cheer and celebration when all you’re feeling is sadness. In addition to her grief support groups (for more information, call 8736500), she has a number of tips for helping you get through every day of the holiday season. “Realize that there are no bad feelings, and that it is normal to feel sad, just as it is normal to be happy,” she says. “Emotions ebb and flow and you must realize that no matter how you are feeling, it will not last forever. Check in from time to time with how you are feeling – you may be surprised to see how often feelings change throughout the day.” Sometimes, traditions need to be changed when there has been a loss in

the family and that can be necessary for getting through the holidays in as healthy a way as possible. It can be too painful to see an empty chair or one less place setting – move Christmas dinner to another relative’s home. There’s no reason that you need to set up a tree, or hang lights, or keep everything the same as it’s always been. Things aren’t the same, and it’s all right to do things differently. “There are no decorating police showing up at your door to see if the lights are up, the tree is in place, the stockings are hung,” Weil says. “You can only do what you can do.” Just as important is finding ways to honor the memory of the loved one that you have lost. While there’s no right or wrong way to do this, either, Weil has some suggestions on ways to make sure the spirit of your loved one is still with you through the holidays. For those that decorate Christmas trees, she suggests a special ornament that reminds you of your loved one; families can decorate the tree together, and each pick a different ornament and share a different memory. Reaching out to others in the memory of your loved one can also be a valuable way to give a gift to another while honoring your memory. Make a donation in their name, or volunteer your time at a local organization that needs

help, especially during the holidays. It’s something even the youngest family members can get involved with; it can be as simple as coloring and making holiday cards to drop off at a local nursing home or assisted living facility. Taste and smell are among the most powerful memory triggers. Instead of the traditional holiday meals, cook some of your loved one’s favorite dishes – and best of all, pass along the recipes and instructions on how to make it to the next generation. Sharing memories is a valuable way to make sure the loved ones who are no longer with us are with us in spirit through the holidays. Weil suggests making a memory book of old photographs, or just sitting around sharing stories of happy memories. Sharing the good with each other is a way of focusing not on the pain and sadness of loss, but of remembering the good and holding onto the laughter and smiles that they’ve put into every holiday. Weil also suggests placing some special decorations on their grave. The act of beautifying their final resting place is an act of honor that can have the most personal significance. While these ideas might not make the holidays happy, they can help make them bearable – and it’s absolutely all right to be sad through the holiday season.

Want your voice to be heard? Dear Lockport and surrounding community residents: Is there an issue in the community you think others should know about? If there is something happening locally you think should be addressed, please let me know. If you want to recognize someone for doing a good deed, please let me know. Let’s keep impaired drivers off the road In every state, it’s illegal to drive with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher, yet some people seem to think their above the law and get behind the wheel anyway. Tragically, some of those drivers — or innocent victims simply sharing the road — don’t

make it home. While the holiday season is a special time to celebrate with family and friends, we must remain aware that it’s also a time when crashes caused by alcohol- or drug-impaired drivers increase dramatically.

For something so serious, the solution is quite simple. Before you attend that office party or holiday open house, make a plan to get home safely. If you plan on drinking, designate a sober driver ahead of time and leave your keys at home, or pro-

Small business adminstration offering disaster loans By Debra Kelly

COURIER CORRESPONDENT

The U.S. Small Business Administration is now offering a series of lowinterest loans to Western New York residents whose commercial or personal property was damaged by the recent winter storms that swept through the area at the end of November. There are several different types of loans available, and they’re not just for business owners. Home Disaster Loans are available for both homeowners and renters that need to repair damage to their property or replace real estate or personal equipment, property or items that were damaged or destroyed in the storm. This also includes the replacement

of automobiles. Business Physical Disaster Loans are available for businesses of any size who need to replace or repair real estate or property. Nonprofit organizations such as churches and charities are also eligible for these loans. Economic Injury Disaster Loans are available for businesses who need capital to cover every-day financial obligations that they have fallen behind on as a direct result of the winter storm. Interest rates are fixed for the term of the loan, and in many cases, terms up to 30 years are available. Interest rates do vary based on factors such as whether or not the applicant has credit sources available elsewhere, but some applicants can receive

home loans for as low as 1.938 percent. Businesses are eligible for rates as low as 4 percent, and nonprofits can be eligible for loans at as low as 2.625 percent. The program is designed specifically to help businesses and homeowners get back on their feet after the storm. Some applicants may also be eligible for funds to use toward protecting their assets against similar damages during future storms. “Businesses of any size and non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory or other business assets,” says SBA’s Buffalo, New York, District Director Franklin

Super sophomores among Eagle leaders this season

By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

According to the Cleveland Hill High School girls basketball roster, there are three sophomores on the team. And technically that is accurate. But if you’re looking for an inexperienced underclassman to pick on, look elsewhere. Aviance Clark, Sydney Turley and Jayla James may be 10th graders in school, but on the basketball court, they’re experienced veterans. “I don’t look at them as sophomores; I don’t treat them like they’re sophomores. I talk to them like they’re my seniors and they know what the expectations are,” head coach Carrie

Owens said. “And they’re up to the challenge.” All three of the Eagles’ super sophomores have been on the varsity team since eighth grade. And these days, they are a key part of one of the top small schools in Western New York. Senior captain Shadymone Newsome leads the team in scoring, but the next three girls on the list are the sophomores. Clark is averaging 11.9 points per game through seven contests to go along with a team-best 23 assists. Turley has contributed 11.3 points per game as well as 38 rebounds and 21 steals. James has tossed in nine points a night and ranks second to Clark in assists. “We’re definitely looking at our three young returning startJEFFREY T. BARNES ers,” Owens said in a preseason interview. “We’re young and talented and our sophomores Alongside teammates Aviance Clark and Jayla James, Cleve Hill’s Sydney are going to be a big part of it.” Turley, right, makes up one-third of the Eagles’ super sophomore trio. And the season excitement stretches well beyond the sophomore class. In fact, of the 14-win team a year ago, there everyone back and motivated, dangerous this time around. 15 players on Cleveland Hill’s “We’re pretty excited,” were zero seniors. And with that makes the Eagles even more

James said. “We’re energetic about this season. It helps out a lot having everybody back. We have athletic people and we’ve all improved on our skills.” After a strong regular season, the postseason ended in the first game for the Eagles, who were upset by Falconer in the Section VI playoffs. But with lessons learned, the Eagles have no such expectations of postseason disappointment this time around. Our hopes are really high,” Turley said. “I really think we’re going to win. After last year, we’re looking to come back strong.” And so far, so good for the young Eagles in 201415. After a season-opening non-league loss to crosstown rival Cheektowaga Central, a contender in Class A, Cleveland Hill has rolled off six consecutive victories. The most impressive came on Dec. 16 when the Eagles cruised to a 30-point win over an Eden team that is expected to be a contender in ECIC IV.

JFK boys basketball jumps out to 3-1 start By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

With a lot of players back from last year’s tough season, the John F. Kennedy boys basketball team knew this season was going to be much improved. And it didn’t take long to make that factually

accurate. After winning just two games all of last season, the Bears won three of four to start this season. “Different feeling, different atmosphere, but our guys expected to be 3-1,” JFK coach Tony Krupski said. “We paid our dues, we took our lumps and I think these guys expected to win. I think these guys are ready to win, but we’re just learning to win. We still have a long way to go.” A win over MST Prep in the Pastor-Cooper Tournament and then a non-league victory over Buffalo Arts got things

started. But it was a Dec. 16 win over Holland that demonstrated how much the Bears have grown. Trailing entering the fourth, it was JFK that made the plays down the stretch to pull away from a 47-40 win over the Dutchmen, who swept Kennedy a year ago. “Every game that’s close, we think we can win it, but we had to do something about it,” Bears’ leading-scorer Joe Braniecki said. “We kept saying it last year but never really came through. This time we all said, ‘Hey guys, you know we can do this.’ We know we can

come up with the big plays when we need them.” It’s been a team effort all around, but Braniecki has certainly played a starring role. The 6-foot-6 senior forward averaged 19 points per game in JFK’s first contests. But five others also have at least four points a night in a supporting role — and with a deep roster, Kennedy expects to count on everybody this season. “We have a lot of talent up from the JV team,” said guard Shawn McPhail, one of nine seniors on the roster. “This year, we have 11 players that

can really play, which pushes the starters all the time. No one is promised a starting position; you have to work for it.” Cale Byczkowski, Nate Pazderski, Josh McMahon, Brendan Fox, Hunter Kowal, Collin Snyder and Dejuaine Strickland are the other seniors on the roster. Most of those guys were around last year and remember the feeling of losing. “It’s nice to be coming back from our season last year,” McPhail said. “This year, we came out more confident. It motivates a lot and it gives us something to strive for. But

we’re just taking it one team at a time and trying to get better.” Even in defeat, the improvement is notable. On Dec. 19, JFK took on a Lackawanna team many expect to win ECIC IV down to the wrire before dropping a 62-58 decision. This season, the Bears have shown they will not be an easy game on anyone’s schedule. “You always hope to win but to come in knowing you have a legitimate chance of winning games, it’s a great feeling,” Krupski said. “It’s a confidence builder. These games early on are hopefully going to mean a lot down the road.

Blujus progressing as player, joins Lightning’s AHL affiliate By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITIOR

Living up to expectations can be a burden on a young athlete at times. If you do as well as projected, then you were supposed to be that good. If you struggle, then you are considered in some circles to be a bust. Syracuse Crunch defenseman Dylan Blujus has the jury still out on him. A highly touted prospect when he entered high school, Blujus was considered the next big thing. A tall, physical defenseman, Blujus was an instant contributor for coach Terry Miller and the Canisius Crusaders. Even at the age of 14, there was already talk about where Blujus was going to play his college hockey — and what people though of him moving forward. “When I was young, I was looking to play college hockey, and there was a lot of pressure to getting into the right school,” explained Blujus. “When it comes down to it, you just have to enjoy the game. You are young. Just go out and play and the game will take you where it has to take you. And that’s exactly what it did.” Funny how things have a way of working themselves out sometimes. Blujus only played one year for the Canisius hockey team before following Miller and playing for the Buffalo Regals. After a couple of years for the Regals, Blujus took his talents to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). “I don’t think it was a

tough decision,” said Blujus on his decision to play juniors over attending college. “Back in the day, my advisor told there was an opportunity in Brampton. I took my chance and it was a great choice. There was a great coaching staff there. And it really worked out for me.” During his stint with Brampton and North Bay, Blujus was drafted in the second round of the National Hockey League entry draft by the Tampa Bay Lighting, where he just signed a three-year entry level contract — and was assigned to the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League (AHL). “It has been going pretty well,” stated Blujus. “Coming into Syracuse was nice, and I was a little familiar with the city and everything. I kind of know some of the guys from some of the NHL camps. So the transition has gone pretty well.” Getting to the AHL almost didn’t happen for Blujus as he suffered a knee injury while playing for North Bay. It was the first major injury of his young career. It was one he had to fight back from. Blujus did, and led all defenseman last year with 26 assists to go along with his four goals. “Luckily through my hockey career I have been healthy.” said Blujus. “It could have been a lot worse. I was only out about month. I think coming back from the injury I was a little slow, because it never happened to me before. But after a lit bit, I just started to play my game. And, that helped me out too.” Now that he is one step away from the NHL, Blujus

Dylan Blujus, a Western New York native and Tampa Bay Lightning prospect, played for the Brampton Battalion of the OHL. knows he has a lot to work on if he wants to get to the next level. He uses Patrick Kane, Tim Kennedy and other Western New Yorkers that have gone on to play in the NHL as examples. “Some of the differences are you are playing against stronger, bigger, faster

players,” explained Blujus. “There is a lot let time on the ice. There is a lot less open ice. It was tough in the beginning, but I am getting used to it now. And I’m starting to play well. It’s a long process, but I know I have to work on a lot things.”

He also holds his high school and Regals coach Miller in high regards. Miller, known around WNY as an intense coach, demanded a lot from Blujus and the respect of the players on those teams. And, in the end, it paid off.

“I really enjoyed him as a coach,” stated Blujus. “He was definitely a big contributor in my progression in hockey.” Blujus has the tools to make it to the NHL. He just needs to play his game and make the right choices on the ice.

For years ago I declared my candidacy for Cheektowaga Town Justice and made firm promises to my fellow Cheektowaga residents. i pledged, if elected, I would correct the issues confronting our town’s court system and raise the standards of our town court. The majority of residents from all five political parties placed their trust in me, elected me judge and gave me the keys to the courthouse. I thank you so much for this awesome honor and all the proud moments I’ve experienced. I have not taken your trust in me lightly. I have fulfilled all my promises and exceeded expectations. By working with extreme diligence and tireless energy, I have remained solely focused at all times on doing what is right for the people of Cheektowaga and honoring my oath to them. Dangerously crowded conditions and a backlog of cases have been eliminated. Many criminals have been jailed, thereby removing predators from our streets. I have exclusively presided over our drug and domestic violence courts, personally handling and working with the individuals who suffer from drug addiction, mental illness and general dysfunctions which fuel so many of

TINKER is looking for someone who will turn the TV channel to the shows she likes, turn the pages on her favorite book, “Three Blind Mice” and also give her the spot she wants on your pillow!
