Not only can you see this fun, giraffe-themed, new four-door MINI in person, you can also purchase raffle tickets for your chance to win a one-year lease or $5,000 cash. greatest community resources, the Buffalo Zoo. All proceeds from ticket purchases will be donated to the Zoo, to help fund the building of a giraffe shade structure. Raffle tickets will cost $5 each and anyone donating $10 will receive an original giraffe jump drive, donations of $20 will receive a stuffed animal giraffe, complete with personalized Sampson bandana (must be 21 or older to enter). Additionally, people of all ages can donate $1 and be entered to win a 6 foot stuffed giraffe. Visit Community Papers of WNY at the Towne MINI booth, during the Auto Show. Raffle tickets
will be sold throughout 2015, with winners being drawn in December. Rules and restrictions apply, visit CPOWNY.com for details. The world giraffe population is diminishing, with fewer than 80,000 in existence today. In WNY, we are fortunate to have the Buffalo Zoo, and their newest giraffe addition, baby Sampson. As a popular recreation spot for WNY families, the Zoo is able to bring attention to the larger issues of animal health, welfare, and conservation. And we need your help.

SPINAL STENOSIS - NEW TREATMENTS • RELIEF WITHOUT DRUGS OR SURGERY WHAT IS SPINAL STENOSIS?
Spinal stenosis is often the result of the aging process, which causes the soft tissue and bones in the spine to harden or grow excessively. These changes may narrow the spinal canal and put pressure on the spinal nerve roots causing symptoms such as pain, tingling, weakness or numbness. Spinal stenosis is seen most often in adults older than age 50. The most common cause of spinal stenosis is osteoarthritis. Other causes include bulging or herniated discs, degenerative disc disease or injury to the spine.
NEW TREATMENTS FOR SPINAL STENOSIS: Three new non-surgical FDA cleared technologies are now being used at the Pain Relief Institute to relieve the symptoms of lumbar and cervical spinal stenosis without drugs or surgery. Disc Rehydration Therapy unloads pressure on neurological, vascular and osseous components and is now the primary non-surgical safe and effective treatment for patients with spinal stenosis, herniated disc, degenerative joint disease, facet arthritis, disc bulge and more. Unlike
drugs and injections, this new therapy is natural and its effects are lasting and often permanent. Another new technology called Deep Tissue Laser Therapy is used to reduce pain, relieve inflammation and restore mobility. It uses specific wavelengths of light that have a strong anti-inflammatory effect. Photons of laser energy penetrate deeply into tissue and accelerate cellular reproduction and growth. As a result of exposure to the laser the cells of tendons, ligaments and muscles repair themselves faster. As inflammation is reduced, pain subsides very quickly. Additionally, Electroanalgesia is now being used to reduce the ability of the afferent nerves to transmit pain signals. This treatment also promotes healing by means of the depolarization effects on the nerve cells. This computer-assisted treatment offers exemplary patient success in the treatment of pain, without piercing the skin. The best news is that these new therapies are suited for almost everyone and unlike some pharmacological solutions, there are no known negative side effects. Regardless of the therapies you’ve tried in the past you still have a chance to relieve your chronic pain or other debilitating condition and regain a normal healthy lifestyle.
For more information about these therapies please call (716) 213-6824 or visit BuffaloPainDoctor.com. Mention this article when you call to qualify for a no-charge consultation with Dr. Anthony J. Bianchi D.C. at the Pain Relief Institute.

Currently, Sampson and his family have use of an enclosed structure, as well as a large giraffe yard of approximately one-half acre. However, during the Zoo’s accreditation process in 2011, it was noted that there was little to no outdoor shade. The Association of Zoo’s and Aquariums (AZA) requested that a shade structure be built to help keep the animals cool and out of the direct sunlight of the summer months. The shade structure is one aspect of the Buffalo Zoo’s reaccreditation in 2016. There will be plenty of opportunities to “spot”
the Towne MINI Cooper throughout the year. Sampson’s MINI Cooper will also make appearances at the Buffalo Home & Garden Show, Erie County Fair, WNY Spring & Fall Health Expos, area shopping malls, and classic car shows. The car will even be displayed on a regular basis near and around the Buffalo Zoo, including at a special community celebration for Sampson’s first birthday. Please consider purchasing raffle tickets, who knows… you may be the one “spotted” in your very own MINI Cooper.

Assemblywoman Angela Wozniak (R,C,I-Cheektowaga) today expressed her disgust following the report that at least one Thruway Authority employee has used taxpayerfunded office phones to schedule meetings with prostitutes. The report comes during a time where there is mounting pressure on the Thruway Authority to bring greater financial and management transparency to the agency. “It’s disturbing that the state is investigating whether multiple top officials at the Thruway Authority used state resources to book call girls. This isn’t just unprofessional, and an abuse of taxpayer funds– this is insulting,” said Wozniak. “I’m especially frustrated given the fact that the agency has neglected to put forth any semblance of a financial plan or to increase transparency with New Yorkers. Mismanagement has plagued the Thruway Authority for years and if these allegations prove to

be true, it’s just another example of how out of control the agency is.” The Thruway Authority opted to sit out of the recent roundtable discussions following a troubling storm response in November. As it has become repeatedly difficult to get information from the organization, elected officials have increasingly criticized the Thruway Authority and called for consolidation and restructuring of the agency. “The Thruway and the transportation it facilitates are a very important part of my community, and greater New York State,” said Wozniak. “The Thruway affects travel for all New Yorkers – and it affects the safety of our citizens. The Thruway Authority needs to respond to the needs of our citizenry, and stop wasting taxpayers’ dollars. A good first step would be using work phones to respond to the storm calls instead of arranging for a meeting with call girls.”

The Zonta Club of Cheektowaga-Lancaster has an impact that is felt around the globe. In order to keep continuing on with all the good works that they’re known for, they need the help of the community. Every year, they host a Lucky Numbers Luncheon Fundraiser with amazing prizes, great food, and the chance to help out with a number of their ongoing projects and programs. This year, they’ll be holding their luncheon beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 28 at Samuel’s Grande Manor. A plated lunch will be served at noon, and throughout the event there will be door prizes, raffles, and a theme basket table. Tickets for the luncheon are $28 and are on sale now; more information on
tickets email zontaspringluncheon2015@gmail. com. An organization with international impact, the Zonta has recently changed its mission statement to be more in line with its current goals. Now, the mission statement that reads: Zonta International is a leading global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. Many people might not even be familiar with all that it is that Zonta does. In addition to helping empower women on the other side of the globe, they’re also making a huge difference right here in Western New York. “One of the programs out Club supports through our fundraising dollars is The Family Justice Center here in Buffalo, and that’s not only with dollars but with some volunteer service from our

members,” said Kerry Switalski, media chairperson for the Zonta Club of Cheektowaga-Lancaster. “We’ve donated some of our fundraiser dollars to the Cheektowaga Youth & Recreational Services program for special scholarships for day camp, and we’ve also donated money to the Summer Institute for Human Rights.” In order to support all the programs that mean so much to local families and children, they’re looking for some help. The Zonta Club is looking for donations of gift items, baskets or cards to be a part of their March fundraiser. Businesses and organizations that are interested in sponsoring the fundraiser can also purchase a business-cardsized ad in their program for only $20. Past fundraisers have been an amazing success for the club, and they’re hoping that with the sup-
port of the community, they’ll sell out this year, too. In the past, hundreds of people have all turned out for the luncheon, helping the club members to do what they do best – help each other. There are four grand prizes that will be raffled off this year as part of the Yellow Rose Raffle. First prize is a Sabres’ Night (April 11) that includes four 100 Club Level seats and a $100 Lexus Club voucher. The second prize is an overnight stay at the Millennium Hotel with breakfast and a $150 gift card to the Galleria Mall. Third prize is a Buffalo Bills helmet autographed by Jim Kelly, and fourth prize is $250. Tickets for the raffle are purchased separately. For more information about the club, its causes and the luncheon, visit www.zontacheektowagalancaster.org.

Resident has high praise for Cheektowaga’s branch of Elderwood Dear Editor, Most of us dread illness and the end of our lives when we may need to turn to assisted living, rehabilitation, or skilled nursing homes, but the reality can better than expected. On Oct. 9, 2014, I entered the Cheektowaga branch of Elderwood on Bennett Road. I chose the facility for rehabilitation from a knee replacement because my mother-in-law, Eugenia Napierala, had finished her 100-year life span there
in 2001. In her five years there, we found much to approve. Thirteen years later, I shared her good experience. The grounds are well kept and attractive. The indoor air was fresh and clean smelling. My room was quickly cleaned every day, and friendly aides gave me appropriate assistance 24 hours a day. Nursing services were efficient and fair. The most necessary component of my stay - the physical therapy – was simply the best. Therapists guided my exercises
in every useful way and prepared me for my return home. I was either laughing at the good humor lavished on all the different people or moved to tears at the sensitivity and kindness I witnessed. I met interesting people in the dining room, enjoyed the variety of food choices, and observed individual kindnesses given to the residents with every stage of need for patience and assistance. Visitors felt welcomed. Entertainment was of-
fered daily. The business staff was competent, and building maintenance was done quickly. I witnessed a memorial service honoring those who had passed away in the past month attended by residents, family members and staff. It was very moving to see the respect and humility of so many that were acknowledging the loss of the people whose lives they assisted and then commemorated. If this facility I experienced is a representative sample, it seems that this
particular corporation is able to operate with excellence and respect for both residents and employees. It performs beyond standards expected of facilities by all who fear illness and old age. I admit that my visit was brief and soon I was going home. Being a permanent resident might be less hopeful, but I hope for my relatives and myself that we could expect to finish our lives within such a community. I dread more being alone in a place I could not maintain, without caring
companions, and with food spoiling in the refrigerator, as happened to some of the people whose demise I witnessed until they were forced into nursing homes in their last extremity. In my mind, Elderwood occupies a warm and glowing place in Cheektowaga. Sincerely,

For Villa Maria College alumna Valerie Kasinski, photography isn’t just a profession - it’s the journey of a lifetime. “After my father’s passing in the summer of 2011, I took a step off the path I was on,” she said. “I didn’t feel connected to my current journey anymore, which led to the quick decision of switching my major to photography. Going through the hardest time in my life when my dad passed, I found myself again in photography.” For Kasinski, there was something otherworldly about being able to create images and designs of her own choosing. She began by immersing herself in nature photography, taking solace in the peace, tranquility, and simplicity that she found when she was alone with the world. When she decided to join Flickr, she didn’t know that she was continuing on her
journey. “I have never known such a supportive group of people that were always there when anyone needed advice,” she said. It was those friends that would ultimately be featured in her exhibition at the CEPA gallery. “Together We Are” is a collection of photographs featuring the friends that Kasinski has made long her journey, portraits of people juxtaposed with other photos, taken of scenery they came across in their travels together. The show will be on display on the first floor of the gallery until Saturday, Feb. 28. At the same time Kasinski was forming friendships with a group of her contemporary photographers, she became fascinated by the way they each related to their own environments and the landscapes into which they were born. Originally, the group met in California for a gathering, and since then, she’s been traveling through California, Oregon, Washington, New Hampshire, New
York City and Vancouver, not only meeting her friends – and idols – in person, but documenting them against a backdrop of their natural landscapes. “My travels, combined with this series, have definitely allowed me to take a step back and really look at these
individuals, my friends,” she said. “Having friends that are scattered all over the world is such a strange but incredible feeling. With the series, for the first time I began to notice little characteristics of each individual that connected them to their state of origin. The show is just a small part of Kasinski’s impressive
body of work. Her friends in large part have been responsible for her continuing on her journey as a photographer, recognizing her dream and starting her own business – Valerie Kasinski Photography. Specializing in portraiture, engagement and wedding photography, it’s truly all kinds of the art that had
captured her imagination. Starting in self-portraiture, where, with the help of a tripod and a remote for her camera, she was able to explore the idea of photographs not only setting a stage but telling an entire story, Kasinski has been fortunate enough to not only be able to branch out on her journey, but to meet some truly amazing people along the way. Looking over the body of work that is being presented to the public at her show, she’s hoping that she’ll be helping people to see the world as she does. “I want people to know that if you find your path crumbling, take a step off and decide if you want to continue on that path or pave a new journey,” Kasinski said. “It’s up to you to plant the tree you want to climb in life, but it’s also important to remember that everyone grows at your own rate.... and that’s completely okay.” The CEPA Gallery is located at 617 Main St. in Buffalo. For more information on Kasinski and her work, visit valeriekasinski.com.

Empty bowls and soup – they just seem to fit together. From the days in your mom’s kitchen when you could hear the clinking of dishes and smell Campbell’s tomato soup wharfing through the air after a snowball fight to those cold winter afternoons as an adult when the scent of chicken noodle soup being ladled into a bowl as you walk in the door on a cold February work day was a welcomed treat. A bowl of soup in the cold of winter is the ultimate comfort food. Now, on Sunday, Feb 15, Buffalo will allow these two worlds to collide for a oneof-a-kind Souper-Bowl. Not a “Norwood- wide right” Super Bowl – that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Rather, a “SouperBowl” that blends the most delicious local soups at the “Buffalo’s Soup-fest” with the annual “Empty Bowls” fundraising event that promises to leave you feeling warm, nourished and satisfied that you have helped your fellow man. The Empty Bowls event, started locally in 2003, is a fundraising event wherein area students and artists craft unique bowls that are
sold to raise funds to aid the homeless and hungry in our area. Each bowl is designed by its creator to represent hunger, poverty and homelessness. The bowls, typically ranging from $5 - $10, are unique to the

Held at the Buffalo Convention Center in conjunction with the Buffalo Soup Fest for its second year, the vending of the Empty Bowls helps to raise awareness of the issues of poverty and homelessness in our region. “First, the project serves an immediate need – fighting hunger and homelessness,” stated John Siskar, an advisor
at Buffalo State College and one of the initiators in the Buffalo based event, “All the money raised goes directly to the Food Bank of Western New York and Friends of Night People. The $6,040 dollars we raised in 2011 translated into over 30,000 meals given to those in need.” In addition, the project is educational as the student artists are taught of how
art has been used through the ages to address societal problems. The Empty Bowls project is a collaborative effort between students from over 50 schools, school faculty, artists, musicians, restaurant and business owners that have donated time, money and wares to produce the bowls to be donated to the event. American Red Cross extending campaign in the face of need By Debra Kelly
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
Originally, it was only during the month of January that blood donors were going to be given an extra something special for donating not only their blood but their time to the Red Cross. But because of extenuating circumstances that have increased the Red Cross’s need for donors even more, their partner has agreed to extend their rewards program. For the first time in their 8-year partnership, Dunkin’ Donuts is extending their offer of a $5 gift card given to each person who donates blood. The offer is now good until Feb. 15. The cards, which feature a Red Cross logo, are reloadable and can be used toward the purchase of any item at participating Dunkin’ Donuts locations. The November storm set the tone for a difficult winter for the Red Cross. Not only were 100 blood drives canceled, but now, an extended flu season has significantly decreased the number of people who are able to give blood. One of the requirements for donating blood is that
the donor must be in general, overall good health and not feeling sick. This means that you’re capable of performing all normal, everyday activities without feeling sick, and the Red Cross always asks that people who are ill – or think they might be coming down with something – call to reschedule their appointment. In the wake of canceled drives made necessary by ongoing weather conditions and the high amount of donor cancellations, the Red Cross is thousands of donations behind what’s needed to keep up with the demand from area hospitals and medical centers. All blood types are needed; whole blood donations can be made every 56 days, and they’re also in desperate need of platelets – a separate process that can be done every seven days, with a maximum of 24 times a year. Regardless of weather conditions or of flu season, the demand for blood donations never stops. Tragedy, accidents, illness, surgery, chronic disease... they’re all reasons that someone might need a blood transfusion, and sadly, it’s not unheard of for life-saving operations to
be postponed because of a lack of donors. A year ago, a 9-year-old girl’s heart surgery was postponed because there weren’t enough type O negative donors; fortunately, people stepped forward, and in February, she’ll be celebrating her 10th birthday. Buffalo’s own Sergeant Adam Carabello, an Iraq war veteran, recounts numerous stories of seeing military personnel forced to go without procedures because of a lack of blood. Carabello himself suffered from a rare disease that impacts the lining of the stomach. Requiring numerous blood transfusions surrounding a six-hour surgery, he knows how important it is to make sure people donate – doing so means saving lives in our own community. “If it weren’t for the blood transfusions, I may not have been here today, he said. “My son would not have a father, and my wife a husband. There are numerous blood drives scheduled throughout the area, including one at the Faith Lutheran Church, located at 1230 Bowen Rd. MQA’s O’Neill honored by Diocese of Buffalo Msgr. Kevin O’Neill, canonical administrator at Mary Queen of Angels Regional Catholic School in Cheektowaga, received the Diocese of Buffalo’s Outstanding Achievement Award at the Celebration of Catholic Education gala held on Jan. 29 at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. ously served as pastor of Immaculate Conception parish in East Aurora for 23 years, retiring in 2005. Orchestra bringing a little bit of Germany to Cheektowaga By Debra Kelly
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
It’s been a while since the last public performance of the Cheektowaga Symphony Orchestra, and they’re promising to make it worth the wait. At 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, they will be presenting A German-Austrian Affair at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, located at the corner of Union and Genesee. The concert is open to all and, as always, will be presented free of charge. The performance will include Symphony No. 2 by Robert Schumann, Franz Schubert’s Rosamunde Overture, Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, and Richard Strauss’s Serenade for Winds. Conductor John Landis, a well-known face and name throughout the Western New York music scene, selected the pieces in order to present an incredibly well-rounded selection of music for concert-goers to enjoy. Having incredible faith in his orchestra’s
capabilities, he didn’t shy away from some pretty difficult pieces. “When choosing this particular program, he felt that playing Schumann’s second symphony would be a challenge for us, but quite rewarding, as it’s a wonderful example of music from the Romantic Period,” said principal oboist and general manager Brenda Small. “He also felt this would be the perfect opportunity to showcase our outstanding group of wind players with the Strauss Serenade, as well as give our very talented string section a chance to shine on the crowd-pleasing Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.” With such a wide range of pieces to choose from, there’s a lot that goes into the selections of pieces for any concert. With this, the goal was not only to showcase the skills of the different sections of the orchestra, but also to choose pieces that were representative of different areas of music with ties to the everpopular German-Austrian music scene. The members of the or-
chestra are no strangers to complicated pieces, or to those that are guaranteed to get the audience on their feet before they’re even finished. There’s something rather mystical and magical about classical music and, when done right, it can stir the soul of anyone listening to it. Recently, the orchestra performed Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, the piece that even those who know nothing about classical music will recognize. The response was overwhelming, and it showed every member just why they spend all the long hours practicing and rehearsing. “When the choir began to sing near the end of the symphony, everyone had goosebumps,” said Small. “Overcome with joy, the audience leapt to their feet before we even finished the final note! That’s why we do it.” The show is just one of many still to come in their 2014-2015 season. For more information, visit cheektowagasymphony. com.

The Tops Markets on South Park and Bailey that you remember from years past has gotten a fresh new look. The $1.25 million renovation redesigned the store with the Tops customer in mind. Located at 1480 South Park the store celebrates its city proximity and uses images of Buffalo architecture to adorn the interior walls. The produce department was given a modern, updated feel with track lighting, hardwood floors, and wood casings that give the colorful, fresh fruits and vegetables a country market feel and expanded variety. “Our South Park store is located in one of Buffalo’s most historic and unique neighborhoods, and has been a part of the fabric of that community for 43 years,” said Frank Curci, Tops’ chairman, president and CEO. “We are always listening to our customers and neighbors and have made significant changes and improvements based on that feedback.” Some of the changes include increased product variety in their Hispanic and Jamaican food selections, increased natural, organic and gluten free offerings and an expanded pharmacy, with a convenient sitting area
located near the pharmacy and ready-made food items, making waiting for a prescription a bit more comfortable. A new brew market was also introduced which offers an expanded selection of craft beers, ales and ciders. “Knowing we have a diverse community here in South Buffalo, we pledged to make improvements that cater to the needs of our shoppers,” said Pat Golden, store manager at the South Park Ave. Tops. “We are proud to present to our neighbors a store that
©
is even more customized to fit their needs.” Tops will be offering special Grand Re-opening pricing on many of their items during the first few weeks of the re-opening. A great time to check out the changes and maybe sample some of the new products, it’s worth a trip to experience the renovations, and check out the City of Buffalo murals in the front of the store. More than 25 jobs have been created at the South Park location as a result of the renovation,
and hiring is expected to continue throughout the year. In addition to the South Park location, Tops has renovated their 345 Amherst St and the 1770 Broadway Ave stores. Tops Markets has committed an overall $5 million investment in their City of Buffalo locations, including two additional store renovations, and continues to display dedication towards the community. “During the store’s Grand Re-Opening ceremony on January 20, Tops donated Over $2,000 to local community organizations including the Valley Community Association, The Old First Ward Community Association and The Advisory Board for Lovejoy,” stated Kevin Darrington, Tops Chief Operating Officer, “The Tops at South Park and Bailey will continue to support its local community in future efforts including the Check Out Hunger Campaign (to benefit the Food Bank of WNY), Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund Campaign, and fundraisers to benefit Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo.” With the continued growth in the City of Buffalo and the South Buffalo area, it is great to see a friendly face like Tops Markets continue to grow with the city and the community it serves.

Local sports
By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
A whole lot of superstar players have played a large role in the rejuvenation of the Cleveland Hill High School boys basketball program, which went from doormat to dominator in a short period of time. It’s a little bit different this season for the Eagles. Sure, the success has remained in place as always, but the standout go-to guy might be hard to detect. The Eagles have applied the different hero every night plan and that’s working just fine. “That’s the strength of our team,” Cleveland Hill coach Jason Przybysz said after a January victory over rival John F. kennedy. “We’re the type of team that when we get everyone involved a little bit and finding whoever’s hot for that moment, we’ve been able to find some success.” Make no mistake: the Eagles still have plenty of star power. Seniors Jermaine Hairston (11.3 points per game, 8.1 rebounds a night, team-best eight total blocks) and Anthony Sullivan (12.5 points and five rebounds per contest as well as a team-best 42 steals) have excelled in a leading role for Cleve Hill. But there are many others. In fact, six Eagles are averaging at least seven points per game and Cleveland Hill has received strong contributions from up and
down the roster. “We just have an allaround good team and I’m thankful for that,” sharpshooting senior guard Zach Lewandowski said. “We’ve just able to get the ball around and then get back on D and cause turnovers.
Everyone on the team is contributing and that’s great to see.” Junior Daytwon Burney is averaging nine points per game and ranks second to Hairston in rebounding. Junior guard Rodney White is averaging 8.7
points per game and ranks third in assists and steals. Ramah Lassiter is scoring 7.6 points per game, while Lewandowski is at seven points per game and ranks second in assists. That’s led to yet another big season for the Golden
Eagles, who entered the home stretch in line for a fourth straight ECIC IV championship and another trip to Buffalo State College, as well. Cleveland Hill ended the month of January with a 12-3 mark and a winner in 11 of its
last 12 games — the lone setback a hard-fought loss to Monsignor Martin Athletic Association power St. Mary’s of Lancaster. “We’re trying to keep this going, get some bigs and then win in sectionals,” Lewandowski said.
Local sports any match; it makes a big difference.” The “A” team features some of the veteran leadership that Cheektowaga has relied on all season long, while the “B” team is led by a group that includes no seniors or juniors, but one that has shown it can stand tall against any team in the league. The depth is showing,” Kaplan said. “Our B team has been very strong, probably better than most B teams, and that makes a difference.” The Warriors have just two seniors, but both have been around for a while and the leadership of Megan Dulniak and Shelby Kirst has been instrumental to the young team.
Dulniak is the top bowler in the league with a 198 average and has her eyes on big things this season. “She’s the top bowler in our league,” Kaplan said. “It’s her senior year and she wants to be on that bus going to states. We’ll see what happens, but we have high hopes for her.” Freshman Emily Crone is in her third varsity season “and she’s really coming into her own,” Kaplan said. Seventh-grader Emma Rome also excelled in her first season for the Warriors. Junior Paige Casillo has also been bowling strong, while sophomore Gillian Chorazak and freshman Krista Hoctor have also been “B” team standouts
for Cheektowaga. This season, the Warriors have continued last year’s success against Maryvale and ended years of frustration against the rival Flyers. “It’s not a rivalry when one team wins all the time like they have against us,” Kaplan said, “so it’s nice to be on the flip side. Some of my young kids, don’t know what it’s like to lose to Maryvale.” For Cheektowaga’s boys team, seniors Greg Pittman, Kurt Thurnherr and Robert Wilson have led the way in their sixth varsity season. Senior Matt Makowski, juniors Trevor Dentice and Tyler Krakowiak and sophomore Zach Bollman have also stepped up for Cheektowaga.

The sideshow was merely window dressing, though: the Bulls drew upon the energy at Alumni Arena and dominated in an 80-55 trouncing. The whole night had a magical feeling to it, as if coach Bobby Hurley’s squad treated the contest as a coming-out party. “It was a great game to be part of,” Hurley said in his post-game comments. “The energy of the crowd and the atmosphere and the way we played defensively was great.” In addition, in a season
which has seen various players take up the leadership torch, another star emerged Friday night in senior forward Xavier Ford. The 6-7 forward, the team’s only four-year member and a front-runner for Sixth Man honors, netted a career-high 25 points in his second start of the season. Toss in his 16-point performance in his first start against Western Michigan three days prior, and it’s easy to see why Ford was named MAC East Division player of the week. Up and down the lineup, the Cheektowaga Central girls bowling team has seen solid performances all season long. games against highly-ranked opponents, even holding halftime leads against Kentucky and Wisconsin. On the way, the Bulls have compiled a 14-6 overall record and are 5-3 in the Mid-American Conference; surely they’ve turning many heads after the MAC coaches’ pre-season poll placed them to finish fourth in their six-team division. At this point, a division title isn’t out of the question: the Bulls went into this past Wednesday’s road tilt against Ball State tied for 3rd in the MAC East Division, just one game behind Kent State and Akron. UB still has a road rematch with Kent State remaining (on Feb. 28) and
two games against Akron (on the road this Saturday and at home on Feb. 24). In addition, UB has yet to play Bowling Green, with whom they’re tied; the teams will play on the rural Ohio campus on Feb. 21 and again to close out regular season play on Mar. 6. In less than two seasons, Hurley has already logged an impressive 33-16 record and owns the best winning percentage ever by a UB hoops coach. He appears to be getting the Bulls on track for some remarkable success, along with any “bright lights” that may shine on them along the way.

Breaking into the job market can be a challenge, even if you’re armed with a college degree. For those that haven’t finished high school, it can be even more difficult – there are times when you might think it’s downright impossible. Catholic Charities is looking to reach out to area residents between the ages of 16 and 24 who are looking for help in obtaining their High School Equivalency. Youth and education services are offered at seven Western New York locations, including the Seneca Babcock Community Center, located at 1168 Seneca St. The program offers much, much more than just a high school equivalency degree, though, and also teaches those enrolled in the program a host of other invaluable life skills. Basics include guidance in job-seeking skills like resume and cover letter
writing, practice and instruction in interviewing skills, and help navigating job search resources. Instructors will also be giving students assistance in exploring career opportunities, opening doors that they may not have even known were out there. Classes also focus on giving background on the rights of employers and employees and other basic job readiness skills. Before that, though, they’re also helping establish the firm ground-work that’s needed to embark on a successful career. From reading and math skills instruction to offering oneon-one tutoring sessions, assistance in applying for the high school equivalency and giving practice tests geared toward showing students where their strengths are and where they need a little more work, the Tomorrow’s Youth Today program is changing lives. According to Catholic Charities, their program has been met with some outstanding success, see-
ing students thrive and grow within the program – and continue to do so once graduation. In 2013, 80 area students earned their High School Equivalency with help from the program, and 90 were placed in jobs. All instructors working in the program are licensed and certified New York State public school teachers, and all are familiar with a wide range of challenges facing students today. Once, it was enough to just have a high school diploma – now, though, Catholic Charities is going the extra mile and helping students plan their secondary education, explore career options, and not only set goals, but form an overall plan for getting exactly where they want to be. In some cases, the program can also help with setting students up in paid work experiences to get some valuable on-the-job training. To find out more about the program including how to enroll, call 893-3500 or visit ccwny.org.

WNY STEM Hub partners with United Way, Erie County The WNY STEM Hub, a volunteermanaged organization that encourages science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning and workforce development, has reached a milestone agreement to partner with the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County. Under this agreement, the United Way will serve as the WNY STEM Hub’s fiduciary sponsor to assist with managing donations and supporting fundraising, grants, and other partnerships. The New York State Center for Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences at the University at Buffalo will continue its primary role as the WNY STEM Hub’s Steward. “We’re thrilled to be under the United Way’s umbrella,” says WNY STEM Hub president Michelle Kavanaugh, Ed.D. “As the WNY STEM Hub continues to grow as an organization, our needs are growing, too. Working under the auspices of the United Way will allow the Hub to actively raise support for our goal to link entities across all sectors of our community in order to inspire students and fulfill the growing STEMoriented workforce needs in our region. This level of collaboration in developing a talented pipeline is essential to our long-term health and success as a region.” United Way leaders say this partnership meets another critical need in our region. “United Way is proud to partner CPOWNY

with WNY STEM Hub to promote STEM education in Western New York; its collaborative, interdisciplinary mission and focus on this critical field make it a natural fit,” said Michael Weiner, president and CEO of United Way of Buffalo & Erie County. “United Way’s work in education is focused on helping children and youth achieve academic and personal success, and STEM is a key component of quality education that prepares youth for the future. Quality STEM programming will help ensure that employers in our growing economy can source skilled local talent - and also ensure that more of our community’s talent can enjoy the full benefits of our local renaissance.” This partnership is an important step as the WNY STEM Hub enters its second year. In its first year, membership in the organization grew to nearly 300 members representing schools, school districts, higher education, and aligned businesses and organizations. A website (wnystem.org) was developed as a gift inkind by M&T Bank. The group’s first major initiative – STEM/STEAM (adding the arts to STEM learning) Week – began with a series of events in May, 2014. In September, Siemens came on board as a major Hub sponsor and partnered with the Hub to recognize 29 Emerging STEM School Systems for their innovations in STEM learning.
The WNY STEM Hub of the Empire State STEM Learning Network facilitates collaboration among business, education, community organizations, arts and cultural organizations, and government entities to advance the interdisciplinary teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics in support of sustained economic and intellectual vitality in our five-county region. Launched in late 2013, WNY STEM Hub members represent business, education, informal learning networks and professional organizations with the collective goal to reduce the current STEM skills gap in this region. As our regional economy evolves, the need for STEM jobs at all levels is expected to increase. In the coming year, the WNY STEM Hub’s goals include the development of the WNY STEM Trail starting in Lewiston, NY, hosting another STEM/ STEAM Week, and adding a number of additional programs and services to support best practices in STEM learning and promote STEM careers. Kavanaugh continues, “Inviting more collaborative partners to share their strengths is the key to the STEM Hub’s vision that Western New York will be an economically and intellectually thriving region with an innovative workforce created through interdisciplinary STEM collaboration.”

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs recently held a “Thank-A-Vet” outreach event at David McKeever American Legion Post 64 in South Buffalo to issue discount cards to honorably discharged veterans who file their original discharge papers with the Erie County Clerk’s Office. More than 80 veterans from South Buffalo showed up to register for the Clerk’s “ThankA-Vet” discount card which can be used at over 1,000 participating local businesses who have agreed to honor the card with a discount on purchases or services. Many of those businesses are located in South Buffalo, including Backyard Party Supply, Curly’s Grill, Imperial Pizza, Mazurek’s Bakery, and Shaw & Shaw Attorneys at Law. “My office continues our effort to recognize the service and sacrifices made by Erie County veterans through this important program and provide an opportunity to secure their DD-214’s on file with County Clerk’s Office,” stated Jacobs. “We are also pleased to work with such a great community partners as the American Legion Posts throughout
Erie County, who from the beginning, have encouraged their members to participate in our ‘Thank-A-Vet’ program,” he added. For the veteran, filing discharge papers is free of charge and certified complimentary copies of recorded discharges are made for veterans or their immediate families whenever needed. Original
discharge papers are proof of military service, and can be used to establish eligibility for a variety of benefits including property tax exemptions and civil service credits.
