Cheektowaga blood drive deemed a success

The American Red Cross’s recent blood drive, held at the Walden Galleria, was a massive success. On Tuesday, Dec. 23, 20 people turned out to their collection unit to give blood, giving of their valu-

able, pre-holiday shopping time to help those with the greatest needs of all. “One blood donation can help save up to three lives,” said External Communications Manager Cara Leyna Noble. “The blood drive was a success.” As with many events and organizations in the area, the November storms

set the Red Cross back a bit on their collections for the season; they’re still going strong, though, and it’s a true example of neighbors helping neighbors when residents give a few minutes of their time and some of their blood. Now and through the month of January, the Red Cross will be partnering

with another national business in order to give their blood donors a little extra “thank you” for all that they do. Those who give blood or platelets in January will also be receiving a $5 Dunkin’ Donuts gift card. “The DD Card is a badge of honor for Red Cross blood and platelet donors both during the campaign and throughout the year,” said Kay Schwartz, CEO of the Red Cross New York-Penn Blood Services Region. “Donating blood or platelets helps to save lives, and with Dunkin’ Donuts support, we can help ensure donations keep pace with hospital patient

needs while recognizing blood donors for the heroes that they are.” Making a point to give donations through the winter months are extra important, says Noble. With many donors – especially in our area – forced to stay home because of bad weather or seasonal illness, that means less people are showing up to give blood. The need for blood doesn’t stop, though, and their January partnership with Dunkin’ Donuts comes at the perfect time. It’s also in time for National Volunteer Blood Donor Month, when those who give of themselves

time and time again are recognized for their lifesaving efforts. For those who are interested in giving blood, there are a number of blood drives set up throughout the Western New York area. Some of the upcoming area drives include one from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18 at the Resurrection Life Fellowship, located at 2145 Old Union Rd. in Cheektowaga and another at the Walden Galleria from noon to 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19. With eBooks and eReaders being one of the hot ticket Christmas items, there’s no doubt that a number of Cheektowaga residents opened one device or another on Christmas morning. There’s a lot to the devices, and the Julia Boyer Reinstein Library wants to help you get the most out of your device. From 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, the library will be offering an eBooks and eReaders Class. The class will give attendees insight into using all the features of their device to the fullest, and will focus on the use of the

Nook, the Kindle and the iPad. The session will include a practical demonstration on using software, downloading files, activating programs, and connecting to the library’s digital media center to download more content. The library system has officially embraced the digital media age, with an extensive catalog of books that are available for borrowing by patrons of the library. When eBooks and eReaders first hit the market, there were plenty of people who thought that they were going to be the downfall of paper books and, ultimately, of libraries. But thanks to programs like this and the extensive media library that is avail-

able to patrons, libraries continue to thrive. Today, the Central branch of the library has a tech team established to help people take complete advantage of all that technology has to offer. “I believe it’s very beneficial to the public in this technology driven world,” said Jennifer Villa, librarian at the Julia Boyer Reinstein Library. “I don’t believe that eBooks are going to make libraries of physical books obsolete. Instead, I think that eBooks have just become an extension onto our everevolving collection of materials we have here at the library.” In order to stay relevant, organizations and companies need to keep evolving and changing to keep up

with the times – it’s no different for libraries. Once, they had to evolve to keep up with movies and books on tape, and this is simply their latest step in evolution. “I have a Nook, and love it immensely,” Villa said. “Though there’s nothing that quite matches the feeling of having that physical book in your hands, the pages turning as that old or new smells hits your nose, signaling that you are, in fact, reading.” The technology series also continues with a class on iPad basics that will next be offered from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7. The Cheektowaga Art Guild has been an integral part of the community for more than 50 years. Over the course of the last few decades, they have seen members come and go, they’ve built lasting friendships, and they’ve done an amazing amount of community service work for their friends, family and neighbors. With the beginning of the new year, that means they’re looking ahead to the next 12 months of exhibitions, meetings, demonstrations and service. They’re also hoping that there’s going to be some new members joining them. Current president Carol Reiller has a long history with the organization. “My mother was one of the founders,” she said. “She created a phenomenal

organization with amazing members.” Reiller fully realized what an amazing artist her mother was when she came across an exhibition with a painting in it that she absolutely fell in love with. Knowing that she needed to have it in her own home, she made it a point to find the artist. She didn’t have to look far. Now, the painting hangs in her home, a place that her mother is so very proud of. For both of them, it hasn’t been about anything beyond the opportunity to share her art – and the art of fellow guild members – with the community. “I bought the painting for the price of a year-long membership to the SPCA,” Reiller laughs. “It’s never been about the money for her, though. It’s about the art.” That doesn’t mean that you have to be an artist to

join, though, and Reiller stresses that many of their members aren’t photographers, painters or jewelerymakers – although there’s plenty of those. Many of the members join to participate in any of the numerous community service activities that they have going on throughout the year. Members will be making Valentine’s Day cards for area veterans and area seniors. Over the course of the year, they’ll be making fleece throws, decorating gift bags, and making holiday cards. They’ll be making centerpieces for tables, to be distributed to area nursing homes. And in doing so, they’ll be reaching out and making the holidays just that much brighter for those in their community. The Art Guild is more than just a meeting place for artists, it’s an extended family. Reiller is hoping that more people decide to

come and join their family, and wants to stress that all of their meetings are open, free, and that they welcome anyone, no matter what community they’re from. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month at the Town Park Recreation Center. They start at 7:30 p.m., and are on the second floor. There are always refreshments, and there’s always a demonstration of an art technique that can range from doll making to silk painting to ink-and-alcohol paintings on ceramic tiles. Many of the people who come to the meetings end up joining the guild, although it’s not necessary. The fee to join is $15 a year, and according to Reiller, that’s the best kept secret in Cheektowaga. Scott was ‘as cool as the other side of the pillow’ This week is a sad one – both for sports fans and journalists – with the passing of longtime ESPN Anchor Stuart Scott. Being only 22, I actually don’t know an ESPN without Scott’s colorful personality. He’s been my favorite anchor since becoming a sports fan, and as the years have gone on I’ve come to respect him tremendously in terms of his body of work as a jour-

nalist. While ESPN is full of characters at this time, when Scott came to the set he was a minority – not just because of his skin color, but also because of the way he did his job. His flair on the air was not something he had in common with his coworkers. Scott changed the culture of the biggest sports network in the country with his catch-

phrases and down to earth personality. His energy and passion made even the most mundane highlights worth watching. When I heard of his passing last Sunday morning, I immediately felt distraught. I knew of his battle with cancer over the last seven or so years, but I couldn’t imagine him not beating it – especially after his wonder-

Scott was the type of guy who I would like to sit down and have a beer with while watching whatever game is on. And I don’t think I’m alone in that regard. We’ll miss you, Stu. Local sports JFK grad Knox remembers roots, signs with Bills By Tom Gallagher CPOWNY SPORTS EDITOR

Corey Knox has always been inspired by Tim Russert. Knox, a 2007 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School in Cheektowaga, didn’t know the late Buffalo native and “Meet the Press” host personally. But when he was in high school, someone important to Knox bought him a t-shirt on which a famous Russert quote — one that resonated with him as soon as he read it — is printed. “The quote is, ‘No matter where you go or what you do, never forget where you came from,’” the 25-year-old said by phone on Tuesday. Knox has long been fueled by those words. They’ve pushed him to excel in nearly every athletic endeavor he’s tackled and they’ve served as a reminder to him to stay humble and remember his roots. And there’s no doubt that he’s done both of those things. Last week, Knox’s lifelong dream was realized and his hard work validated when he inked a reserve/future contract with the Buffalo Bills. A lengthy phone conversation with the newly signed NFL fullback revealed that not only does he remember where he came from — the city for which he now plays football professionally — but he remembers and is thankful for the people who’ve influenced him along the way. Even after Knox had already thanked a host of family members, friends, teammates and former coaches, he was sending text messages to add to what had become a laundry list of people he’s grateful to have been helped by. “I never ventured too far and I always try to remember

where I came from,” Knox said. “I’ve had so much support along the way, no question. It’s been crazy, the amount of messages, calls, and emails I’ve been getting from teachers, coaches, family. … It’s wonderful.” Perhaps just as supportive — albeit unintentionally — as Knox’s family, friends, teachers and coaches, however, is a contingent of people who told Knox he wasn’t good enough over the years. “Thank you to the people who told me ‘I couldn’t’ through the years,” Knox said. “They have been just as important in my mind as all who have been supportive. They’ve fueled unbelievable motivation.” That motivation was put to the test very early in his college career. “You’re not a D1 athlete” While football has always been Knox’s sport of choice, he was heralded more as a track and field athlete during his time at JFK. As such, he had his sights set on competing as a thrower collegiately. Upon graduating from Kennedy, Knox reached out to UB throws coach Jim Garnham about joining the Bulls for his freshman season. Knox’s inquiry, however, didn’t go very well. “I wanted to go to UB out of high school, but I didn’t have good enough distances to go there,” Knox recalled. “[Garnham], he’s a great man, he shot me pretty straight and told me, ‘You’re not a D1 athlete right now.’ “I took that as a chip on my shoulder.” “You could see the potential in Corey,” Garnham said. “But he was only 195 pounds at the time. He was a 45-foot shot putter in high school.”

Not long after, Knox enrolled and competed as a thrower at Midland University, an NAIA program in Fremont, Nebraska. And he took Garnham’s words with him. After a strong season as a freshman there — one in which he was besting most of UB’s top throwers’ distances, Knox said — he gave Garnham a call. “‘I called him and said, ‘I’m beating the heck out of your guys,’” Knox said. “‘Can I get a workout over the summer?’” Knox returned home that summer never to return to Midland. He worked hard and earned a scholarship to throw for UB, where he’d major in architectural studies. “I gave him a shot,” Garnham said. “We put him in the weight room and he just went after it. He has a drive that few people have. Those are the people that make it. He had the determination to become something not many people thought he could be. “He’s worked so hard. He’s

the first person I know from track and field that has taken architectural studies, gotten a degree and continued to compete at the D1 level. “One time, he came to practice and he looked like death. I asked him how long he’d been up for and he said, ‘48 hours.’ I told him to go home. He’d been up because he had studio, weight room, he’d go back to the studio to maintain his grades, but he’d still show up for practice. I love the kid.” By the end of his collegiate track and field career, Knox had finished with four MidAmerican Conference medals, two bronze and two silver. Additionally, he made it to the first round of the NCAA nationals in both shot and discus his senior year. But something was missing. Love of the game While Knox undoubtedly saw a great deal of success in track and field, his favorite sport was and always has been football. Knox drew up memories of

watching football games with his brother, Ryan, at Rich Stadium while their father, Rich Knox, worked as a bartender in the HSBC box there. He remembered playing football with lifelong friends Adam Bartoszek — who passed away a few years ago — Mike Bartoszek and Dave Niedbala in a lot near Knox’s grandmother’s house on Willowlawn Parkway and at the Value plaza on Rossler in Cheektowaga. “I always knew I wanted to play football,” Knox said. So he took action. Having grown to about 240 pounds — he started college “right around 200 pounds,” he said — Knox tried to walk on to UB’s football team as a junior. But there was a problem. He hadn’t played in a while. “They couldn’t find a spot for me as a junior,” Knox recalled. “I went to their office every day. They didn’t want to waste a spot on a guy who hadn’t played football in four years.” But Knox didn’t sulk — he loved football too much for that. Instead, he worked harder. He maintained a strict diet. He continued to train and work as a strength and conditioning coach at Absolute Performance inside the Eastern Hills Mall. He trained under UB strength and conditioning coach Paul Childress, who, as a competitive powerlifter, owns world records in the squat at the 308-pound weight class. Knox was up to 250 pounds by the time the fall 2011 came around.And his hard work paid off when he eventually landed a meeting with Quinn. Knox outlined for the former UB coach what he was willing to bring to the Bulls and “he finally gave me a walk-on position,” said Knox, who forfeited his partial track scholarship in search of a spot on the football

roster. “From there, during camp I busted my butt, I threw my body at everybody that moved and I became the starting fullback by the end of camp and earned a full scholarship.” Knox said that he started every game at fullback his senior season. Not bad for someone who hadn’t played since high school. Little experience, few pro prospects After graduating from the UB School of Architecture and Planning in 2012, Knox aspired to turn pro. But just like when he first reached out to UB about throwing for its track team and just like when he first tried to walk on to the Bulls’ football team, he encountered some resistance. “Unfortunately, with just one year of college football experience, there weren’t many pro teams that were willing to give me a shot,” Knox said. In his head and in his heart, giving up wasn’t an option. He’d been told ‘no’ before. Naysayers had been consistently present while he was in college and he’d beaten the odds before. With his dream very much alive, he continued to work at Absolute Performance after college while doing what he could to get scouted by pro organizations. He attended three CFL scouting combines and two NFL scouting combines. No teams expressed interest. “I didn’t get any calls back,” Knox said. “That’s how this thing works. Lots of great football players aren’t playing right now.” His fortunes changed a few months ago.

Local sports Braniecki thriving as Bears’ go-to threat on basketball court

Joe Braniecki is the John F. Kennedy boys basketball team’s top scorer, leading rebounder and best shot blocker. The Bears generally look to find him as often as possible. But don’t try telling the senior forward he’s the star player. “My expectation for myself is to help my team score more points than the other team, that’s it,” he said after a December win over Holland. “I’m not worried about

stats. As long as the team wins, that’s all that matters.” Wins are starting to come for the Bears, who have bounced back from a tough 2013-14 and become a team to watch this season. Through four games, the Bears had already topped last year’s win total. The entire team has made contributions, but it all starts with Braniecki. The 6-foot-6 senior is in his third varsity season and expectations were high from the get-go. “We’re counting on big things from Joe this season,” head coach Tony Krupski said in a preseason interview. He has delivered. Braniecki is averaging a team-best in points (17.8 per game), rebounds (8.1) and blocks (2.5) after leading the Bears in all three of

those categories as a junior as well. “Joe does a lot at both ends of the floor,” Krupski said in the midst of JFK’s hot start. “He’s long, so he’s real good on defense as far as his presence, and he blocks some shots. And he’s our go-to guy; we want to get the ball in his hands at the offensive end. So he’s doing a lot of nice things for us.” And perhaps his biggest attribute is his team-first approach. As a team, the Bears’ sole focus is getting the program back to winning ways and Braniecki’s working towards that and disregarding any individual attention. “That’s a great attitude to have,” Krupski said. “And the other guys recognize that, too. They know what he can do and they want to

get him the ball but at the same time, they have make things happen, too, and they’ve done that.” The Bears are off to a hot start and will head into a Jan. 13 game at defending champion Cleveland Hill with some confi dence. A year ago, the Eagles swept the two ECIC IV games between the Cheektowaga rivals by a combined 40 points. The Eagles are the league favorite again, but the Bears showed in a down-to-thewire win over a strong Holland team and a tight loss against Lackawanna before Christmas that they’re ready to take on anyone. “We have a lot more confidence this year,” Braniecki said. “We know that have a little momentum and we’re ready to keep it going. “

Bandits pay visit to John F. Kennedy Middle School On Jan. 7, students from John F. Kennedy Middle School participated in the Buffalo Bandits School Program, sponsored by Intense Milk. As a part of the program, Bandits players Mark Steenhuis, Dhane Smith, Ryan Benesch and Brandon Goodwin visited the school and delivered an informative and interactive presentation. The players put on interactive lacrosse demonstrations and hosted fun contests, which helped to get all students involved in the program. Turning point About four months ago, Knox was contacted by the offensive coordinator of an Arena Football team in San Jose, California. The coordinator, Knox said, had seen some of the fullback’s film and was impressed. Not long after, Knox signed with the San Jose Sabercats. Meanwhile, fellow local Chris Manhertz — a former Canisius College basketball player who Knox said had worked out with the Bills a few months earlier but was told by team officials that he needed to hone his football skills a bit more and to return a few months later — had started working out with Knox at Absolute Performance. The two keyed on football drills for several months, and that’s when “the gears started turning in my head,” Knox said. “I had just gotten signed to a team,” Knox recalled thinking. “Basically, I ended up talking to [Manhertz’s] agent and he was able to get me a

workout [with the Bills] at the same time as [Manhertz]. “We tested really well, they liked us both and here we are.” Knox joined Manhertz in signing a reserves/future contract on Dec. 30. He called putting pen to paper “a crazy feeling.” “At some points I was shocked. At some points I felt that it was just a dream come true,” Knox said. “I couldn’t believe it was happening, but then part of me said, ‘Hey, you’re supposed to be here. You’ve worked your butt off. You know you’re good enough, now it’s time to prove it.” Never forget where you came from While Knox tries to prove it, though, he’ll remember where he came from. He’ll remember who helped him get to this point. He’s got his father, Rich Knox, and his brother, Ryan, who wasn’t able to play football past the age of 15 due to spinal meningitis and

was an inspiration to Corey. “He wanted to play football more than anybody and I know he would have been great if he did get to play,” Corey said, adding that both Rich and Ryan “toughened him up” physically over the years. “He came to all my games and got me jacked up before I took the field. He’s always been on my mind and given me strength when I play.” There’s his mother, Lillette Daley, his grandparents, Pat and Ron Knox, other family members like his uncles, Al Watroba and the late John Bobowicz, and family friends like Ronnie Morcio. He’s got his girlfriend, Erin Burr, “who has been incredibly supportive,” Knox said. There’s a host of his coaches at JFK — people like Jim and Jeff Rogowski, Tony Krupski, Brian Hondzinski, and Pete Szymanski — and even Nichols gridiron skipper Colin Brinson, a JFK teacher that never formally coached Knox at JFK.

There are teammates like Jacob Madonia, a fellow UB track competitor who has battled cancer since his second year of college and is a source of inspiration for Knox, and Garnham, who is “behind Corey 100 percent.” Then there’s training partners like Paul Miller, Matt Knotts and Tom Corradino, and a group of friends, including Dan Gund and Dave Dombrowski There is a countless number of others who’ve influenced Knox along the way. He won’t forget any of them much like he won’t forget where he came from. It’s how he’s wired (by way of Tim Russert). Not dreaming small

Knox is unquestionably thrilled to have signed with the Bills — and rightfully so. But he has visions far more grandiose than merely signing a contract. “I don’t want it to just be this,” Knox said. “My goal is to be the best fullback in

Hairston, Eagles continue to soar through Maryvale tourney

It wasn’t all that long ago that the Cleveland Hill boys basketball team walked into crosstown rival Maryvale’s annual holiday basketball tournament with

nothing more than a chance to improve against far-superior opponents. But it might be difficult to convince Jermaine Hairston of that fact. After all, the Eagles’ senior co-captain was in seventh grade the last time his school lost in its rival’s annual event. Hairston, the lone three-year varsity player on Cleveland Hill’s roster, will end his career with a 6-0 record in the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament that always features four strong teams. “That feels great to see,”

Hairston said after the Eagles’ championship game win over Salamanca on Dec. 28. “To say we never lost in the Maryvale tournament, that’s big.” Cleveland Hill has won 11 straight in the tournament, dating back to 2009. The days of just trying to compete for third are long gone for the Eagles, who have become an annual small school contender. “Winning this tournament five years in a row is a great accomplishment,” Cleveland Hill coach Jason Przybysz said.

“If you’d have asked about winning this, even six years ago, it was just a blip on the radar for us,” And not only was Hairston a part of three championship teams, he was a significant contributor to that success as well.Asenior forward, Hairston was named Most Valuable Player of the 2014 event that included wins over Hamburg and Salamanca for Cleveland Hill. He scored 22 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in the tournament.

“When you work hard, you get recognized a little bit,” Hairston said. “I give what I can, help out my teammates. I just go out there and do what I can to get the ‘W.’” And hard work is the key to Hairston’s game. The senior averages 9.7 points per game and has 43 rebounds in seven games — ranking second on the team in each category. And much of his success comes battling bigger boys in the paint. “He does a lot of glass clean up for us,” Przybysz said. “He’s

6-1, but he plays a lot bigger than that and that’s a key role for us.” The Eagles finished the 2014 portion of the schedule at 6-2 and winners of five in a row. Cleveland Hill lost a ton of talent from last year’s club but this year’s group has no plans on giving up the ECIC IV championship or the annual ticket to Buffalo State. “Everyone here is playing real hard,” Hairston said. “We’re doing nothing but getting better.”

A tale of three taverns

Throughout its history Buffalo has been known as a blue collar city that was built on the sweat and hard work of its residents, many of whom would end their day at a local tavern to unwind

and socialize. With recent changes in Buffalo, many of the old pub names have come and gone, but there are a few establishments that have seen a recent rebirth in the re-awakening of Buffalo – and are worth a visit. Winfield’s Pub, with its simple brick exterior, is easy to overlook – but that would

be a mistake. Located as 1213 Ridge Rd near Abbott Rd and just steps from where hundreds of steel workers once tread, Winfield’s is easily accessible from the I-90 thruway. Stepping inside its modest décor you find an owner and master chef rolled into one. Chef Tab Daulton, once a top chef with Delaware North, honed his culinary skills throughout the country before coming back to settle down and open Winfield’s Pub in late 2013. Once known as Sage’s Third Base and catering to a post ballgame crowd for decades, Winfield’s Pub has turned the tables on the basic pub grub once found on premises and has introduced such culinary delights as a lamb burger with cumin and coriander topped with feta cheese, and the occasional roasted pork sandwich special with garlic aioli and caramelized onions.
