Wendy Liebman’s got talent

By: Lauren Kirchmyer Did you watch this past season of “America’s Got Talent?” If you said yes, you probably have heard of stand-up comedian Wendy Liebman. After being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the show, judge Howard Stern selected Liebman as his wild card, allowing her to appear on the show one more time. Though it was magician Mat Franco who won season 9 of the competition, Liebman was able to bring her already successful career to new heights. The Long Island native’s stand-up career began after graduating from Wellesley College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She performed research at Harvard Medical School and worked as the assistant to the director at a fellowship program at Radcliffe College. One day, Liebman decided to look into taking a comedy class at The Cambridge Center for Adult Education in Cambridge, Mass. “I was reading the course catalogue when I saw, ‘How to Be a Stand Up Comedi-

an.’ That really resonated,” Liebman said. “I wasn’t planning on pursuing comedy but it fell into place.” Her first professional standup performance took place about 30 years ago at Stitches, a comedy club in Boston, Mass. “The person I went with said no one heard a word I said, but I felt good about it. Comedy is addictive,” she said. Her career took off. Liebman became a regular on the “Late Show with David Letterman” and she appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” She was the first comedian to perform on “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” and has done comedy specials for HBO, Comedy Central and Showtime. Her most recent special, “Taller on TV,” celebrating her 50th birthday, aired on Showtime and is available on DVD through Amazon. Her comedy has allowed her to open for bigname stars like Ray Charles and Reba McEntire, and in 1996 she received the

American Comedy Award for Best Female Standup. Though Liebman has experienced multiple noteworthy moments in career, her most memorable moment was performing on “America’s Got Talent.” “Performing on stage at Radio City has been highlight of my career,” Liebman said. “More people saw me on that show than every other show I was ever on combined.” “America’s Got Talent” brought more exposure to Liebman’s name and knack for comedy, but what she couldn’t do on the show while on stage was interact with audience members. “My favorite thing is performing live in a club and getting gritty,” she said. “It’s

people there are the nicest. I’m looking forward to entertaining them. I heard the food is pretty good too. Any food is good as long as I’m not cooking it.” Her show will contain new material as well as a lot of jokes about her parents, husband and two stepsons. “They’re always trying to help me come up with new jokes about themselves,” Liebman said. Besides performing standup around the country, Liebman and her husband, Jeff, are currently writing a musical about stand-up comedy titled “Home on Tuesday.” “My husband is very musical,” Liebman said. Jeff’s father and uncle, The Sherman Brothers, wrote music for many famous Disney

like there’s an inside joke with the audience when it’s live. It’s really fun.” Experience this interaction first hand when Liebman brings her stand-up show to Helium Comedy Club, located at 30 Mississippi St. in Buffalo. Performances begin at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30; and 7:30 and 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 and Saturday, Nov. 1. “I’ve never been to Buffalo. I better pack a parka,” Liebman joked. “I heard the

films. Liebman on the other hand is new to this side of the entertainment industry. “I was writing songs and didn’t know where they came from. The collaboration brought it out of me.” To learn more about Liebman, visit www.wendyliebman.com or follow her on Twitter (@WendyLiebman). Tonawanda High School to perform ‘The Addams Family’ By KImberlee Sabshin NT SUN CORRESPONDENT

For the first time in Western New York, a high school will pay tribute to the macabre family that has been featured in comics, a live-action 1960s television show and various animated series to the stage. Tonawanda High School will put on its production of “The Addams Family” musical 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday, Nov. 13 and 14; 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 15; and 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 16., keeping in the spirit of the Halloween season even after it is over. All performances will be held in the auditorium of the junior-senior high school complex at 600 Fletcher St., Adult tickets are $10, while students and senior tickets are $7. The musical came to Shea’s Performing Arts Center in downtown Buffalo in 2011, and is based on the text by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, and characters created by Charles Addams in the comics, which he first drew in the 1930s. Earlier this month, the cast of “The Addams Family” was about a week into their rehearsals, but music, singing and excitement could be heard in the high school auditorium after school hours. As of Thursday, Oct. 2, art teacher and theatre producer Daniel Lynch, who is directing the musical, said the students were beginning to learn the music, stage blocking and choreography for the production. “We selected ‘The Addams Family’ because it is a new show that offers unique challenges for our students,” Lynch said. “The show offers an interesting story line, outstanding musical score, and dramatic opportunities unlike no other show. We

believe this show will excite and motivate our students. This show also offers opportunities for students in the ensemble to stand out.” The musical’s full cast, most of whom are seniors, includes Connor Maxwell as Gomez Addams, Erin Burris as Morticia Addams, Justin Pope as Uncle Fester, Meghan Bozeman as Grandma, Jaimee Harmon as Wednesday Addams, Ben Thurston as Pugsley Addams, Michael DeSantis as Lurch, Kyle LeBlanc as Mal Beineke, Marina Tighe as Alice Beineke and Cullen Colosimo as Lucas Beineke. Lynch said “countless hours” will typically go into preparing for Tonawanda High School musicals, and the cast rehearses six days a week. As the cast prepares their lines, an additional team of parents, staff members and members of the stage crew also work behind the scenes to create the costumes, set and props. Although some of the school’s past performances have included students from the entire middle and high

Lynch said an additional show, “Cinderella,” has been added in February for the younger students. The cast was announced on Sept. 11 after rehearsals ran from Sept. 8 through Sept. 11.

“The show is known as being very funny, and having the kind of part that I do as Grandma, I’m definitely very grateful, because I can venture out and just do my own things when I do it, and it’s definitely going to be an opportunity to improve my acting, because it’s what I

want to do,” Bozeman said. During a rehearsal early this month, Maxwell commented of his role as Gomez, the Addams Family patriarch, “They’re all completely different; they’re all really intricate, there’s a lot of stuff that goes into deciding what your character is going to be like. Everyone can just look at the TV show or the movie and go, ‘Oh, yeah, that’s Gomez,’ but you can’t just be Gomez, or Morticia, or Fester. You have to make them your own, make them interesting, and bring the audience in.” For Lynch, performing this unique show will be a challenge, but one the entire cast, from the directors to the students in the cast, are ready to take on. “We are very excited to be the first in the area to put on this show,” he said. “Our cast has learned about the comic artist, Charles Addams, and

the evolution this kooky, mysterious and spooky family has undergone. Our students are very excited to bring these characters to life through their performance, set design and costumes.” Lynch also said the Tonawanda theatre program has grown since 2009, when it was “a very small group with a small budget, doing unadventurous shows.” Now, because of the “increased enthusiasm and motivation of our students, we are now able to select shows like ‘The Addams Family’ and bring a new level of professionalism to our program,” he said of the program’s growth since then. The high school students will again appear in the British play “Noises Off” on May 8 through May 9, 2015, rounding out this year’s performances.

Pappas announces candidacy for council By Kori Sciandra

NORTH TONAWANDA SUN EDITOR

Shortly after the news of the passing of the late Robert Clark, former North Tonawanda Alderman At Large, made its way through the city, it was the responsibility of the common council to fill the now vacant seat on the council. Leading candidate Art Pappas announced his candidacy once he received news of Clark’s passing. “I am running now for the Alderman-At-Large seat due to the unfortunate passing of Bob Clark, who held the position,” said Pappas. Serving as a North Tonawanda school board member for the last 17 years, Pappas has made a world of difference in his role as a member. Although he believes there is always room to do more in the school district, he also feels it is time for a change. “I do not feel I have done all I can as a school board member, because there are many challenges in education presently and you never stop learning, however, serving on the joint city/school district committee I feel this is an opportunity to serve the community in another capacity,” said Pappas. If elected to serve on the council next month, Pappas would be forced to resign from the position he is currently serving as a school board member He would fulfill the Alderman-At-Large vacancy, focusing on city issues as a whole. It would then be the decision of the school board to decide if they want to fill the vacancy by appointment, wait until an election is held, or leave the seat vacant.

Pappas spoke on his intentions as a council member, if elected. “As a council member I would bring knowledge of the budget process, integrity, a work ethic, PR skills, a desire for open communication, representation at functions affecting the present and future of our city, willingness to learn and listen as well as contribute ideas on issues. My diverse interest in the assets of our community would help me bring forth concerns to the present council. My experience of working with others of all age groups in my profession and involvement in so many volunteer activities have given me the expertise to work positively with other individuals.” He continued, “Upon filling this seat on the council I would hope to keep the momentum of our ‘Renaissance’ going, continue economic development with interest in providing opportunities for small businesses, continue sharing of services with the school district and surrounding communities, promotion of the arts along with supporting the expansion of the Riviera Theater and developing a cultured use for the Carnegie Arts Center with input from local artists and musicians, update current infrastructure and enhance the Gateway Harbor.” Pappas noted recent community concerns following a wave of arson attacks and said he would work to make North Tonawanda “safer, more secure, so it can remain the place where we all love raising our families.” As the leading Alderman-At-Large candidate, Pappas hopes to receive the support of the community during the upcoming election. He asked for the Repub-

lican, Conservative, and Independence parties to nominate him to serve out the balance of the term. “I would like the public to consider my community involvement in many organizations and my local experiences and dedication to the many diverse activities, which demonstrate my commitment to my hometown. This knowledge provides me with a broad perspective of community concerns in addition to the insight gained as a board of education member. Everyone should exercise their right to vote and I would be honored, if elected, to rep-

resent all citizens of North Tonawanda.” Pappas is a Lifelong resident of the Tonawandas. He is an active member of the North Tonawanda Youth Board, the United Way board of directors, the Tonawandas Chamber of Commerce economic development committee, and the Erie-Niagara Sunrise Exchange Club, and is a commissioner of the North Tonawanda Housing Authority, a trustee of the Tonawandas Historical Society, and a member of the NYSUT Retirees RC #3.

We often forget to think about the men and women who defend our nation and maintain our freedom. We go about our business, living our lives with the notion that we are protected, we are safe. Not always considering the sacrifices the men and women, who make up our military, are making to keep us safe and out of harms way. It isn’t until many of these men and women return home from war that we start to pay attention to the sacrifices they have made for us. Whether they have lost their limbs or their sanity, they chose our safety over their own. It is now the duty of the civilians to take care of our own. The men and women who have returned home and are now disabled, need the communities help. Whether they fought in Vietnam or the Iraq War, they fought for us. So, it’s time to repay them. The local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans Post 120, (DAV), is the acting voice for disabled American veterans who are scattered throughout Western New York and living on the streets. The chapter has raised thousands of dollars for disabled veterans over the last few years, all due to the support of the community. With the cold weather quickly approaching Buffalo and WNY, the DAV is looking to the community for support to help those disabled veterans, who are living on the streets. According to past DAV commander, Gerald Tidd, the DAV is looking to collect winter clothing for men, women, and children. This includes long sleeve shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, coats, jackets, hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, etc. Additionally, the homeless veterans shelter located in Buffalo is looking to collect coffee - instant- and toilet paper for those veterans who visit the shelter to shower, eat, and get a break from the cold weather for a brief amount of time. Any donation helps. Whether it be a donation of warm clothing or a monetary donation, every little bit helps to get these men, women, and children off the streets and into warm clothing and possibly warm beds. According to Tidd, there are many disabled veterans, who, for one reason or another have found themselves without the proper finances to afford their homes and have since been forced to live on the streets of WNY. These are our friends, neighbors, and family members who need the support of the community. Donations can be dropped off at Tidd’s home at 460 North Avenue, North Tonawanda. To make arrangements for pick up or for more information, call Tidd at 310-2004.

Rescue receives grant Heart of Niagara Animal Rescue announced they are the recipient of a $5,000 grant from the ASPCA and Subaru Rescue Ride that will assist Heart of Niagara’s shelter partners and transport partners, with monetary support to enable the transport of dogs sitting in overcrowded shelters awaiting their forever homes. “Our shelter partners experience overcrowding and difficult conditions. While they are doing the best they can, they reach out to us constantly to choose animals for transport to our area. These animals are unable to be placed in their area so we are moving them to where they stand a better chance to be adopted” says Kathy Nowakowski, managing director, Heart of Niagara. “This funding will help offset some of the costs associated with the transports, giving these beautiful animals a second chance. Heart of Niagara takes great care with a preapproval process to make sure potential fosters and adoptive families are the right fit for the animals in our care. This grant enables us to do the job we are doing every day, but at the same time, helps our shelter partners by covering some of the expenses they incur in order to get the animals ready to come to us.” Heart of Niagara is a not for profit companion animal rescue organization based in Niagara County whose mission is to protect the health and welfare of abandoned, unwanted and homeless animals. For more information, visit their website and “like” them on Facebook at “Heart of Niagara Animal Rescue, Inc.” You may also call Heart of Niagara’s main number at 345-7129.

Falcons find win column in shutout win over Lew-Port By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER

The streak has ended at 22. Niagara-Wheatfield finally broke a 22-game losing streak in the regular season last week (Oct. 17) against LewistonPorter. The streak dated back to September 2011, and this season was perhaps the most trying, as the Falcons had only scored seven points all year prior to the 12-0 win over Lew-Port. It was only two touchdowns, but it had to be an incredible weight lifted off of the shoulders of the N-W players, as they not only got a win, but they were able to put some points on the board after being outscored

150-0 in the previous three games. An even bigger factor in the victory was that the rushing attack was finally able to get rolling as the Falcons scored on a quarterback keeper by Andrew Doricko and on another run by fullback Dan Cicco. The run game has been the key all season for NiagaraWheatfield, as it has never been a major factor, and the team will need to continue the momentum against an underrated Clarence team. Despite missing out on sectionals, Clarence has a solid team that played a gauntlet-like regular season schedule. The Red Devils were playing division games against the likes of Jamestown, Orchard Park and Frontier while also playing Keith Pittner (3) and the Niagara-Wheatfield football team snapped a non-league games against St. 22-game regular-season losing streak when they beat Lew-Port. Joe’s and Niagara Falls. Last week’s win over Niagara Falls was probably the Wolverines finished third in them a huge lift after a five- the Red Devils were in every highlight of the season as the ClassAANorth and it has given game losing streak, even though game with the exception of a

41-7 thumping to Jamestown. Niagara-Wheatfield will be forced to defend a very balanced offensive unit let by quarterback Scott Pinto and running backAngelo Marzullo. Pinto has tossed eight touchdown passes in his senior campaign while Marzullo has run for five touchdowns and caught two more. Clarence will also use a plethora of weapons in Jake MacDonald, Stephen Marzano, Niko Mullen and Brandon Ruszala. Last season, the Falcons were able to win both of their Funke Bowl contests in blowout fashion, so look for them to come out and play hard. Just because neither team made it to sectional play doesn’t mean that this game doesn’t mean anything to either team. The game will be played at Clarence High School on Friday (Oct. 24) with kickoff set for 6 p.m.

Wheatfield Blades ‘Turn the Rink Pink’ at Hockey Outlet By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER

One of the biggest movements in the last several years has been to raise awareness for breast cancer. That goal to raise awareness for the deadly disease has reached the NFL, the Buffalo Sabres and even high schools around the area. All wear pink during the month of October to help the cause. From Oct. 17-19, the Wheatfield Blades did their part as they dedicated an entire weekend to breast cancer awareness in what they called “Turn the Rink Pink” at The

Hockey Outlet spearheaded by Blades’ board member Dave Cannon, who is the husband of a breast cancer survivor. “The board members wanted the teams to have the ability to wear pink socks for the month of October,” said Cannon. “At a board meeting, we came up with the idea to come up with a whole weekend around breast cancer awareness.” Aside from wearing pink socks, the weekend saw a Chinese and Silent Auction with items such as various autographed items by Patrick Kane, an autographed stick by Sabres’ goaltender Jhonas Enroth and a laptop computer.

Erie County Medical Center, the Sabres Alumni, First Niagara and WNY Breast Health were also in attendance with its mobile pink screening bus on Saturday to offer information and outreach for early screening and detection. The weekend culminated in a unique event as the Blades’ coaches took on the Buffalo Bisons women’s hockey team, with all participants wearing pink jerseys. All of the proceeds went to breast cancer awareness. “We have the ECMC bus screening bus here,” said Cannon. “We have a live auction, a silent auction, and the big event is the Wheatfield coaches playing the [Bisons]

women’s team. It’s just a bunch of kids playing hockey for a good cause.” This year is the 40th anniversary of the Wheatfield Blades, and this marks the first time in organization history that they have deviated from its traditional uniform colors of blue and gold as they don the pink socks, and there was no opposition to the change. Obviously pink has become a popular color for men and women these days, along with other highlighter and fluorescent colors so kids naturally want to wear those colors because it’s cool. With the macho nature of sports, kids will often be teased for wearing pink, but Cannon says that

all of the Wheatfield players have a full understanding of why they will be wearing pink this month. “I think that the older kids get goofed on a little bit for wearing pink socks,” said Cannon. “But the way I explained it to my team, who are 14 years old, every time they put the color pink on it’s a message to all of the grandmas, aunts, moms and sisters that have had breast cancer that they are with them. It’s a good sign for these kids to show that they are there with them.” For Cannon himself, this was an extremely touching weekend to be a part of as his wife is a three-year survivor of

a disease the affects 220,000 women in the United States each year and 1 in 8 U.S. women in a lifetime. While displays like these are often seen at higher levels, it is still great to see it in general and especially to see it trickle down into youth sports where a win-at-all-costs and sport-centered attitude is so common. “It’s neat,” said Cannon. “It’s neat to see the support of the Western New York hockey community to come out and to step up for people that are affected by breast cancer. Especially to show the players and the Wheatfield Blades that there is more to life than hockey.”
