St. John’s pumpkin patch A pumpkin patch sprouted at St. John’s the Baptist School in Kenmore as a truckload of pumpkins were delivered to the campus grounds. Students and faculty gathered at the School Walkway for a pep rally kick-off for their ‘Race for Education,’ the annual Walka-thon that raises funds for the school. After walking their routes, over 400 pumpkins were distributed to students as a special surprise for their festive, fall day. First grader Ellie Leonard said, “The containers of pumpkins were gigantic! I got to pick my own pumpkin and I’m just happy I didn’t fall into the bin, though that would have been fun, too, because then I would be in the pumpkin patch.” School parents John and Sue Napier of Napier Landscaping, Inc. were trying to think of something meaningful and heartfelt to do for the families of the school. Sue Napier explains, “It was truly our pleasure to be able to do this. This is really the kind of thing my husband, John, enjoys doing.being

The On/Off Switch: A Low-Tech Solution to the High-Tech Problem of Computer Viruses? Computers are always getting more complex, a trend that is unlikely to stop. They get viruses, so anti-virus services are needed. These services cost money, self renew (even after users don‚t want them anymore), and are not completely effective, so users still need to take their computers to technicians once in awhile and part with some bucks to clean their e-garbage up. And while the virus fighters get more sophisticated, so too do the hackers breaking into those systems. Where is this mess heading? Could this
problem be simplified? Let‚s consider how a computer works. A computer has a small short term memory for immediate use. It also has a large long term (permanent) memory, which is stored on something called a hard drive. A hard drive does two basic things: it reads (retrieves) information put there earlier (copying it into the immediate memory) and it writes new information (from the immediate memory) for later retrieval. (When writing, it also erases old information to make room for new information.)
I propose a simple solution for viruses: put an on/off switch on the hard drive‚s writing mechanism. Turning the switch „off‰ would render the computer temporarily incapable of writing anything on (or erasing anything from) the hard drive (though it could still read old information from that hard drive). Any viruses could be received, they just would never be recorded and retained. The user would only turn the switch „on‰ when specifically wanting to store information from a trusted source.
I feel my computer is like my house. When I leave my house for awhile, I lock the door. I do this because I don‚t want every nearby joker to come in and write graffiti on my walls, urinate on my floors, eat from my refrigerator, shoot drugs in my living room or have sex in my bed (all of which might happen if I left the door unlocked). I want to do the same thing with my computer. I want to lock that hard drive when I go on the internet to keep all those cyber jokers out, so they don‚t e-graffiti and eurinate in my computer‚s
circuitry. When was the on/off switch invented? Around 1803? In the early days of electricity experimentation, somebody first figured out how to send an electric current through a wire. Very shortly thereafter, that person discovered that if a disconnection were made somewhere in that wire, electricity stopped flowing--- hence the on/ off switch was invented. On/off switches come in many shapes and styles. We still use them today on our lights, our toasters, on all kinds of electric mo-
tors, on our TVs. There is something inherently wrong a computer design, if anybody (who is not the computer‚s owner) can write stuff on the hard drive, without the owner‚s knowledge nor permission. Yes, it‚s a good idea to remove viruses from a hard drive, once they‚re there. But it‚s a better idea to prevent viruses from getting there in the first place. An on/ off switch could do this. Seneca Niagara Resorts & Casinos announces January 2015 line up Award–winning country and pop vocalist LeAnn Rimes will start the New Year off with a twang, heading up the January entertainment lineup at Seneca Resorts & Casinos. Rimes and improvisational genius Wayne Brady will bring their talents to the Seneca Niagara Events Center, while the cozy Bear’s Den Showroom will hum with former Barenaked Ladies’ lead singer Steven Page, “American Pie” favorite Don McLean, Canadian country artist Michele Wright and several performances of Brandon Bennett’s “Elvis My Way”— the closest thing to the King in concert. Three-time American Country Music award winner LeAnn Rimes will light up
the Seneca Niagara Events Center at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9. Ticket prices start at $30. Rimes, with her remarkably similar Patsy Cline sound, shot to fame in 1996 at the ripe age of 13 with the debut hit single “Blue.” “Blue” reached number one on the Top Country albums charts, went multiplatinum and was a Top 10 hit. Rimes has won two Grammys, three American Country Music awards, a Country Music Award, 12 Billboard Music Awards and an American Music award. The hilarious, multi-talented Wayne Brady will take the stage of the Seneca Niagara Events Center at 8 p.m. on Jan. 31. Tickets start at $30. Brady won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstand-
ing Individual Performance in a variety, musical or comedy series for his on-the-spot improvisational work on the hit TV show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” In 2001 Brady starred in his own ABCnetwork variety show “The Wayne Brady Variety Show” and a daytime talk show of the same name in 2002, which won four Daytime Emmy Awards, two of which went to Brady for Outstanding Talk Show Host. Steven Page, formerly lead singer with Barenaked Ladies, will give what he calls a “theatrical and intimate” solo performance—perfectly slated for the up-close-andpersonal experience fans can only get in the Bear’s Den Showroom at 8 p.m. on Jan. 16. Tickets start at $25. Page,
who stems from the northern side of the border in Canada, has released five solo albums since 2005. His solo work is upbeat and stylistically “all over the map,” ranging from power-pop to disco, to big band jazz to folk. In celebration of Elvis Presley’s 80th birthday weekend, Brandon Bennett will bring his blue-suedeshoe “Elvis My Way” tribute show to the stage in the Bear’s Den for three dates: Jan. 9 at 8 p.m., Jan. 10 for two shows at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Jan. 11 at 3 p.m. Tickets start at just $15. Bennett is the closest thing to the King as perhaps anyone has achieved, having won the “Ultimate Elvis Tribute Contest” and the crown for the title of “Ultimate Elvis Trib-
ute Artist” at Graceland. His tribute show and band “The Heartbreak Orchestra” performs across the country and has opened for Chuck Berry and Ronnie Milsap. Don McLean will no doubt have the audience singing along to the perennial favorite pop-folk epic “American Pie” in the Bear’s Den at 8 p.m. on Jan. 17. Tickets start at $35. Since 1971 McLean has amassed over 40 gold and platinum records worldwide and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004. McLean has released a number of solo projects over the years and has re-recorded old favorites, along with a collection of classic pop, country and jazz covers. Canadian country music
artist, Michelle Wright will croon the night away in the Bear’s Den at 8 p.m. on Jan. 30. Tickets start at $35. Wright is one of Canada’s most widely recognized and awarded female country singers. She is a twotime winner of the Canadian Country Music Awards Fans’ Choice Entertainer of the Year award. Her single “Take it Like a Man” hit number one on the country music charts in Canada and hit the Top Ten on the Top 40 Billboard Hot Country song chart in the US. Tickets for all January shows are on sale now and are available at select Seneca Resort & Casino retail outlets, Ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations or by phone at 800-745-3000.

N-W spikers show progression in playoff win, fall to Eden By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
It’s amazing what a difference two months can make. On Sept. 12, the NiagaraWheatfield boys volleyball team dropped a home match to Starpoint, 3-1, but after nearly two months the Falcons showed how much they have improved by coming back from a 2-0 deficit to beat the same Starpoint squad 21-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18 and 2514 in a Class B qualifier on Monday night (Oct. 27). Early in the year, Falcons’ head coach Jim Proefrock said
that he wasn’t concerned about wins and losses, but with how his team was playing. Well, on this night, his team played well and came out with the win. “We played to win,” said Proefrock. “We were down 2-0, our backs were against the wall, we had no choice but to step up. It was play or go home and they stepped it up.” Starpoint jumped out to win the first two sets and it looked as if it was going to be a short evening for Niagara-Wheatfield, but the team battled back. The Falcons jumped out to a big lead in third set, going up 19-7 at one point, but the Spartans displayed resiliency and cut the lead to 24-22. Even though Niagara-Wheatfield would get the final point to take the set, it appeared as if Starpoint had the momentum
JEFFREY T. BARNES
The Niagara-Wheatfield boys volleyball team posted a comeback win in the playoffs before falling to Eden in the quarterfinals. going into the fourth. “I told them that they were going to stop making mistakes and that we just had to play better,” said Proefrock. “That third
game we had a lot from our middle blocker Mike Reed. He was having a lot of key blocks for us and I told them to start picking up our game elsewhere
and not plan on blocking. His blocking continued and other aspects of the game also picked up, like our defense.” Junior Mike Reed played above the net all night, as he controlled the top row on both sides, and he proved to be the difference. Reed had not played in the first match back earlier this season and on this night he showed just how valuable he could be. “He is definitely playing above the net,” Proefrock said of Reed. “We are starting to click on the ones in the middle so it was nice.” Starpoint jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fourth set and again it looked as if they were going to shut the door on Niagara-Wheatfield, but they fought back again and would
get 18 of the next 23 points in the match to tie it up. From there it was like a mudslide that the Spartans just could not stop as the Falcons would take the fifth and deciding set convincingly. “We did have the momentum but we didn’t do anything to keep it,” said Starpoint head coach Kirk Spitler. “Every time we would get a little momentum, we’d give it right back. We would make a play and we would serve the ball out of bounds or just watch the ball drop.” Niagara-Wheatfield took on the top seed and perennial powerhouse Eden on Tuesday (Oct. 28). The team fell in straight sets and finished the season 4-12. Starpoint finished the year 5-13.
NCCC girls volleyball team boasts high number of locals By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
There is a bit of local flavor on the 2014 Niagara County Community College women’s volleyball team. Nine of the 13 players on the roster come from high schools within Niagara County, which is convenient for so many reasons, but mainly recruiting. For any collegiate team to be successful, it needs to recruit well within its own area (especially when there are multiple competing schools in that area) and that’s just what head coach Joe Daigler has done as his team sits at 16-9 heading into the NJCAA Regional Tournament this weekend. “The majority of the years it’s a lot of local talent,” said Daigler. “There is a lot of local
talent around here that could be playing at higher Division II or even possibly Division I schools. The cost of school is a factor for a lot of them. The last couple of years we have had a lot of great talent come through here for two years to save that money and they continue elsewhere.” Not only is it helpful to get local talent on the recruiting trail, but it is even more helpful when you are successful with that talent. At 16-9, this has been another stellar season for Daigler and it will certainly help him continue to get some of the top volleyball players in Niagara County for years to come. “It’s huge for the program,” said Daigler. “Between [ECC], Buffalo State, Medaille, D’Youville…they are all around the same talent level so
going after the same talent in the area is tough. Establishing a good program and graduating three All-Americans in the last three years gives us a little bit of an edge when girls are thinking about where they want to play.” There is something unusual about the local talent on the squad this year as five players graduated from Wilson High School. Freshmen Allie Bubar, Miranda Newman and Alyssa Schlosser along with sophomores Anna Tuttle and first team All-Western New York Athletic Conference pick Jordan Glosser all played for the Lakewomen in their run to back-to-back Niagara-Orleans League titles from 2012 to 2013. You often see former high school teammates play together at the collegiate level like the
former Niagara Falls basketball duo of Jonny Flynn and Paul Harris did at Syracuse a few years ago, but it is almost unheard of to have five players from the same high school play together at the next level. “I am kind of glad,” said Glosser. “I love playing with my Wilson girls. I really missed it. I think we all get along. It’s not like all of the Wilson girls are together, we all hang out together.” It is not just Wilson that has contributed to the Thunderwolves’ success this season, as former Lew-Port graduate Morgan Boss, Starpoint’s Nicole Cyr, Grand Island’s Kassie Bennett and NiagaraWheatfield’s Leanne Wills are all wearing the blue and gold. When you have a team that has nine players that have played with or against each
other at the high school level it contributes greatly to the continuity of the team. Not only are the players familiar off of the court, but they know where they will be on the court and what skills they bring to the table, which makes the college experience easier. Starting libero Wills and Boss are perhaps more familiar with each other than any two players as they not only played against one another in the Niagara Frontier League, but they are cousins as well. “It’s really awesome, we’ve always played together,” said Wills. “Our high schools always played against each other and now it’s really cool to be on the same team. Our families like to come watch the games together so it’s really interesting.” Wills is the most local of all of the Thurnderwolves as she
attended high school not even five minutes down the road. Not only does she get to play with some familiar faces, but playing in her home town allows her family and friends to watch all of her home games. “It’s like five minutes down the road,” said Wills. “So I’m constantly seeing people I know; which is a good adjustment. My cousin is on the team so that’s good too.” NCCC will play the biggest tournament of the season this weekend, starting Saturday (Nov. 1) with the NJCAA Division III Region III Championships as they try to earn a bid for the national championships in Rochester, MN. If they can advance, it will only enhance the amount of local talent that wants to play for the Thunderwolves for the next several years.

Ken-East band director in running for Grammy Award By: Lauren Kirchmyer It has been said that Kenmore East High School has one of the best music programs around, and the students and faculty of the school point to Phil Aguglia as the reason why. “I was one of those awkward kids who didn’t really fit into a lot of places,” Aguglia said. “I struggled a lot but it was through band that I found a place. It became part of who I was.” He started taking trumpet lessons, an instrument his dad played, in fifth grade at Southside Elementary School in Buffalo. During his sophomore year at Hutchinson Central Technical High School, his band director allowed him to work with and help other students. Seeing his peers succeed because of his help filled him with satisfaction. “No matter what my personal successes were, I felt more accomplished when people I worked with did well. That’s why I wanted to be a teacher,” Aguglia said. He went on to receive a bachelor’s in music education from Ithaca College and a master’s in music with a focus in education from SUNY Fredonia. He taught in Massachusetts, followed by West Valley, before making his back to Western New York to teach middle and high school band for Cleveland Hill Union Free School District in Cheektowaga. “He took a program that was in its infancy with very basic skills and turned them into a very respected band and music program in Western New York, all on his own,” said Joseph Greco, who started with Aguglia at Cleveland Hill around 1997 and currently is the assistant principal at Kenmore East High School. “He put in hours after school, weekends, working with kids for extremely
long hours.” And his ways haven’t changed. In 2002, Aguglia moved to Kenmore East. His workday starts at 7 a.m. and sometimes goes until 10 p.m. He is in charge of wind ensemble, concert band, three jazz bands, two jazz combos, several small chamber groups, individual lessons as well as pep band. He puts in around 70 hours each week. He will even work on weekends and during the summer to make sure his students are getting the best music education. “I run a different kind of program, it’s a little non-traditional,” he said. When students are not in class with Aguglia, they are allowed to go into his classroom and work on material including chords, scales and rhythms. “Great things happen when you allow this flexibility.” “The way he teaches things is indescribable,” said Isabelle Bertino, a senior at Kenmore West High School. “You’re not just learning something you have to memorize, he makes sure you can understand it, which is what a lot of teachers are not capable of doing.” Last year, the Recording Academy and the Grammy Founda-
tion introduced the Grammy Music Educator Award. It only takes one nomination to apply for the award. Aguglia received about 60 nomination emails, but he didn’t pursue. When the competition opened for 2015, Aguglia’s email was flooded with nominations once again and he decided to give it a chance. This year about 30,000 people were nominated for the award. Approximately 7,000 people followed the link in the email to fill out the application. From there, 222 music educators from around the country were selected for the quarterfinals. Aguglia is now one of only 25 people who remain in the competition. “It’s humbling,” Aguglia said. “I’ve won a lot of awards, but it doesn’t mean anything to me unless what’s happening in here, in the classroom, is working.” “He’s a big part of why Kenmore East is successful,” Greco added. “I don’t know anyone who works any harder. He’s extremely well deserving, and I know I speak for the entire school.” Aguglia made sure to include the entire school in his nomi-
nation process in return. When he found out he was one of 25 who remained in the competition, he had to film videos answering questions about why he was deserving of the award. Besides showing video clips and pictures of his students past and present, Aguglia shared in his videos how he brings in guest artists, allows his students to perform throughout Western New York and travel to places like Las Vegas and Disney World, recruits students through unique programs, proposes ideas to the school district to receive new instruments, and is involved with charitable and educational organizations such as Music is Art. He even had busloads of students collect instruments and volunteer in New Orleans, La. after Hurricane Katrina hit. “One thing that is important to me is that my students understand there is a bigger world out there,” Aguglia said. “It’s not about what just happens in this room. I say to them, ‘Leave a footprint bigger than your own so when you graduate there’s something they remember you by,’ and I’m never disappointed.” Should he win the Grammy Award, he would receive a $10,000 honorarium. Kenmore East’s Music Department would receive $6,000 through the Ford Drive 4 UR School program and a $10,000 grant, allowing Aguglia to start an artist in residence program at the school and let the students work with a mentor, a professional from the music industry. “The help we would get from the Grammy Awards wouldn’t just be used towards anything it’s for us, for the students, and Mr. A always puts his students before himself or anything else,” Bertino said. “I truly believe he deserves this award.”

Hard Rock International introduces worldwide Hard Rock Roxtars launch Hard Rock is rolling out the red carpet for its youngest rock stars to show off their best impressions. To launch the Hard Rock Roxtars program, Hard Rock Cafe Niagara Falls, USA will host the “Does Your Child Look Like a Rock Star?” contest on Saturday, Nov. 1. For one afternoon, kids, in costume or not, will eat free if each is with an adult purchasing an entree (one child eats free with one adult purchasing an entree; excludes purchase of an appetizer, salad or dessert). Guests can bring their favorite pint-sized rock star to the cafe dressed in their best costume for a chance to win a Hard Rock Cafe gift card or a 2015 birthday party (restrictions may apply) for eight of the rock star’s closest band members and entourage. No celebrity or musician has endorsed the “Does Your Child Look Like a Rock Star” contest.
As the city gears up for Halloween, Hard Rock Cafe Niagara Falls, USA will be on the lookout for the city’s future rock stars that look and dress the part. The kids’ activities, contest and live music will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1. Reservations are recommended. There will be arts and crafts as well as photo opportunities for kids from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. led by students of Mount St. Mary Academy’s entrepreneurship program. There will be live music performances with young artists including Francesca Harvey and Olivia Larson from Live! Starring … You! as well as Vincent Bonelli. Music is Art will be on hand throughout the event with information and giveaways for the kids. The “Parade of Costumes” will begin at noon, and judges will choose the winner directly following. ner may choose between a birthday party at the cafe or a Hard Rock gift card. Prizes will also be awarded for two runner-ups. Judging will be based on originality, quality and creativity of the costumes. The contest celebrates the unveiling of the Hard Rock Roxtars, a band of characters serving as brand ambassadors for Hard Rock’s multifaceted brand-wide programs catering to children of all ages, presented at Hard Rock Cafes, Hard Rock Hotels and Rock Shops worldwide. The Hard Rock Roxtars will provide fans of Hard Rock with an authentic, irreverent experience rich in music content, allowing the brand to connect with future and veteran rockers alike. Inspired by Hard Rock International’s paramount differentiator – music – this band of five characters and music performers, the Hard
Rock Roxtars, each have distinct personalities representing the individuality and freedom of artistic expression in children. Band members include Razzi, Sir Kingston, Styler, Buddy Jr and Skiddley. The Hard Rock Roxtars are each unapologetically original and designed to inspire kids of all ages to rock an inimitable brand of cool, allowing their originality to shine. “Hard Rock is thrilled to unveil the new Hard Rock Roxtars program,” said Allison Appoloney, general manager of Hard Rock Cafe Niagara Falls, USA. “We are delighted to be working with wonderful partners such as Live! Starring … You!, Music is Art and Mount St. Mary Academy.” Children who dine at Hard Rock Cafe Niagara Falls, USA will be greeted with their own activity book, Hard Rock Roxtars-themed menus, guitar-shaped plates
and Hard Rock Roxtars photo opportunities. As part of The National Restaurant Association’s Kids LiveWell program in collaboration with Healthy Dining, a mission and online resource that helps parents and children alike select healthy menu options when dining out, Hard Rock Cafes worldwide will offer healthier food options, ranging from Skiddley’s “Not-sodiddley” chicken breast to the “twisted ‘n tasty” cavatappi pasta. When Hard Rock Roxtars travel, they do so in style, and families who stay at Hard Rock Hotels are immediately in the band. Kids will receive a special Hard Rock Roxtars Activity Book at check-in and unlimited entertainment at Hard Rock Roxity Kids Club, a family-friendly, music-inspired haven, customized per property, where kids rock to their own
