Aquarium of Niagara ‘Cruzes’ into the holiday season With the holiday season fast approaching, the Aquarium of Niagara is getting ready to celebrate with a series of events, specials and donation drives. Trainers will also continue to hold daily feeding presentations featuring the Aquarium’s newest family member, six-
month-old Atlantic harbor seal, Cruz. Recently, the Aquarium of Niagara celebrated “Reveal the Seal day by revealing the chosen name for ‘Pup2014.’ After a naming contest that welcomed more than 500 participants, four names closely competed for the top
honor. By a slight margin, the public chose Cruz to be the pup’s given name. The spirit of holiday giving will officially kick-off on ‘Giving Tuesday,’ Tuesday, December 2nd. The Aquarium will host a nonperishable food and personal items drive to benefit Heart,

Council votes to reinstate street parking for spring, summer months By Kimberlee Sabshin NT SUN CORRESPONDENT
During its regular meeting on Tuesday night, the City of Tonawanda Common Council voted to renew a previous resolution allowing vehicles to park overnight on city streets, excluding Oct. 1 until March 31, in response to concerns from residents of Young and Scott Streets with no off-street parking. However, some residents said the council needs to also include these months. The resolution, which prohibits the standing of vehicles on all city streets between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. from October through March, also specifically excludes trailers, semitrailers, recreational vehicles, campers, boats, commercial business vehicles and livery vehicles from parking on streets. Tuesday’s resolution renews a previous one the council previously voted on earlier this year, which expired Oct. 31, and passed by a margin of three councilmembers’ votes to two. “After careful consideration and talking to the three major department heads that this affects, by their recommendation, I will be vot-
ing ‘no’ on this,” said Third Ward Councilman John “Jay” Hall before the vote. Council President Carleton Zeisz joined him in voting against it. However, residents spoke at the meeting to ask why the council did not choose to go a step further and allow vehicles to remain parked on city streets all year long, for residents with no garages or driveways. Kim Miller, a Scott Street resident, suggested alternate-side street parking all year, but Council President Carleton Zeisz said city department heads had “never been willing to engage” this idea. He also said this renewed parking resolution will be permanent unless it is later overturned by another resolution that passes. After the vote, Second Ward Councilwoman Jackie Smilinich said, “I truly wish there was something else we could do for the people who do not have parking, and it’s not just the people on Scott Street. I’ve run out of ideas, so if you have any more, send them my way.” Also on Tuesday, Thomas Overfield, a resident of Tussing Lane, presented a petition asking that two stop signs on his street, which had

been removed last week, be replaced. 70 of his neighbors also signed the petition, which read, “We, the residents of the area most affected by the removal of stop signs at Tussing Lane and Sutley Court, petition the City of Tonawanda Common Council to replace the stop signs in both the easterly and westerly directions.” Residents expressed concerns that removing the stop signs has encouraged people to speed. Overfield said he also polled the owners of 36 residences and found 32 households wanted the signs put back, three were happy the stop signs were gone and one household was undecided. However, City of Tonawanda Police Captain Fredric Foels said the city had conducted an investigation to determine which of the stop signs were to be removed, and had good reason to do so. Foels said the intersection in question was one of several pairs of stop signs that had
been removed from the city. In determining which stop signs were to be taken down, police looked at factors such as “why it was put there, volume on the street and how many cars go down the street,” as well as the speed of cars and the numbers of accidents on that particular street. He also emphasized that a stop sign is not specifically meant to keep people from speeding, and encouraged people to contact the police if they see many cars speeding on Tussing. “The purpose of a stop sign is to regulate traffic at an intersection. If there’s a concern about speed on your street, we’ll get the officers there and run traffic and radar on that street,” Foels said. “You live on the street, you’ve had it there all your life, but it’s only been six days. Give it a try. We didn’t just pull the stop sign out willy-nilly. We did our due diligence on it. We did study it, we looked at all the data and the stats…we’re trying to do this throughout the city.”

17 year tradition, Rockin with Holy Ghost to host Christkindl Market Santa, is set to rock Elks Lodge
Holy Ghost Lutheran School Parent Teacher League is sponsoring a Christkindl (Christmas) Market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at the school, located at 6630 Luther St. in Niagara Falls. This event will feature a Christmas Craft Show with over 50 crafters and a German-themed lunch with Bratwurst, sauerkraut and other scrumptious homemade favorites. A “Holiday Shop” will feature special Christmas gifts that children can purchase for family and friends from a large variety of inexpensive quality gifts. Holy Ghost’s version of a Christkindl or Christmas Market dates back to a tradition begin in 16th Century Germany when craftspeople erected stalls in the heart of German cities with food, drink and entertainment. Christmas markets came into being to meet the demand for Christmas presents after Martin Luther set the fashion of giving presents to children at Christmastime. “Christkindl” takes its name from the Christ Child to whom Martin Luther gave the role of present bringer. The Elks Lodge, located at 55 Main St., Tonawanda, is set to host the 17th annual Rockin with Santa Christmas event from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. The concert, that used to be held on Broad Street, has become a longstanding tradition in the North Tonawanda community. Each year it raises money and Christmas gifts for needy families in the surrounding area. This year the concert will feature local rock sensation Widow Maker. The cover charge for this year’s concert is an unwrapped gift for a child up to the age of 16. Last year the event provided gifts for more than 140 families in the area. The list of families comes from a number of different organizations including: The Boys and Girls Club, The YMCA, and St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Francis. Eight female volunteers from the Zonta Club wrap the gifts each year once they have been donated. Then on the Sunday morning before Christmas 30 families will come to the local fire hall and each child will get to pick three

the community after their children had grown. “You are always looking for something to do, most of the people just want to help out,” said White who explained that many of the 30 community members that volunteer have been doing it for years for similar reasons. Monetary donations for the event can be sent to: “Kids,” PO Box 96,
Tonawanda NY 141500096. The concert will feature music from the local award winning rock band Widow Maker. The band, that rocks stages all over Western New York, features four performers: Michael Hund, Alison Janet, Band Bassist and Carl Messina.
Local jazz trumpeter Lew Custode will once again donate his talents to help raise funds for this year’s Salvation Army Christmas Fund Drive. Custode, best know for his work with the “Barroom Buzzards” and “The Custode & Parisi Jazz Trio,” will perform holiday music at various Salvation Army kettle stand locations throughout Niagara County. This is the eighth year that the jazz musician will be participating in the fundraiser, giving the charity organization a different spin on their popular holiday “bell ringer” presentation. Custode is proud to participate and donate his time, saying, “It was nice to see so many friends stop by the kettle, catch-up on old times and most importantly contribute to the fund raiser. It is very rewarding to participate and it is my way of giving back to the community that I grew up in.” This year, the Salvation Army kettle stands will be set up at all Tops Niagara Falls and Lewiston locations, and Sam’s Club, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Save-A-Lot and Big Lots in Niagara Falls. Look for Lew Custode to start playing at various locations through Dec. 25.

2014-15 Wrestling Preview Falcons grapplers enter season having to replace two sectional champions By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
The wrestling tradition at Niagara-Wheatfield has been well documented. While the Falcons placed second in the Niagara Frontier League and third in Class AA last year, they also had a few outstanding individual wrestlers. In order to continue that tradition, Niagara-Wheatfield will have to replace two sectional champions in Brandon Brusino and Jason Vranic. “Every year is different,” said Niagara-Wheatfield head coach Rick Sweney. “We have a couple of kids ineligible with grades. Some of the other teams didn’t lose as many so they are going to be a little stronger. It’s their strong kids against our strong kids. We have to adjust and you have to have depth.” With all of the budget cuts within the Niagara-Wheatfield district, it wouldn’t shock many if the program would decline, but Sweney is able to help continue the tradition with a strong youth program. The NWAA helps serve as a modified team, which was cut a few years ago, so the Falcons don’t have to start from scratch
once the kids enter high school. “We lost our modified two years ago,” said Sweney. “We have a strong youth organization and I’m also the director of the Niagara Powercats so we get a lot out of that. A lot of these kids train down there in the summer months.” While Niagara-Wheatfield does not return any sectional champions, it does return three sectional runner-ups. One of those wrestlers is senior Dan Cicco, who came up just short in the 170-pound division and he is primed to not only make a run at an NFL championship but at a sectional patch as well. Cicco will also take a step up in weight class as he moves up to the 182 class after wrestling at 170 pounds for his entire high school career. “I definitely didn’t just get fat,” said Cicco. “I got a lot stronger from last year so I think 182 will be a good fit. My goal is to win the section and place at states.” Some other experienced wrestlers returning are sectional finalist Vince Falvo at 106 and junior Shane Helbig, who is a two-time sectional finalist. Helbig placed second in the 126-pound weight class last year after winning sectionals
JEFFREY T. BARNES
The Falcons have been hard at work in practice in an effort to replace the production of two graduated standouts and sectional champs. as a freshman, so he hopes to get back to his winning ways this season. “His competition level is tough in his weight class,” said Sweney. “So we just have to
see where everybody else falls. He could be a wildcard. We will have to see if he stays healthy and where everybody else falls at the end of the season.” Juniors Storm Hutcheson,
Ryan Ploetz and Josh Kelly also project to be big performers. The Falcons are heavy on juniors this year, with 18 on the roster, which bodes well the future especially after they surprised many people with their finish at the end of 2014. “Alot of juniors in the lineup that are tough,” said Sweney. “We surprised a lot of people last year. Lew-Port beat us by 30 and we came back and beat them in the NFL. We have a nice core of juniors. Next year will be our toughest year in a while.” Having a young team can have an upside and a downside. The upside is that the talent will eventually bode for multiple strong seasons, but the negative is that it can have an effect on the maturity level in the practice room. On this team, the older wrestlers have been able to understand the situation and they know how beneficial it is to the program. “It’s not hurting us having so many younger guys,” said Cicco. “Sometimes they can be immature, but them being through the program is going to help. Having been in the program since seventh grade has helped because we have a lot of experienced juniors.”
While seeing girls on the mat is not a new sight, it is rare to see more than one on the squad, which is what Niagara-Wheatfield has in Kendra Cheers and Courtney DeWolf. Sweney says that coaching them is no different than coaching any of the boys on his team and that the technique is still the same. “We have some tough lightweights,” said Sweney. “She’s been on the team for the three years. It’s the same technique, same everything.” Niagara-Wheatfield opens the season with the Matthew Marino Invitational in Webster on Dec. 6. Edison Elementary School takes part in Read for the Record Students across grade levels at Edison Elementary School took part in the national Read for the Record campaign with a final count of 375 students who were read the Rosemary Wells children’s book “Bunny Cakes.” Read for the Record is a national campaign by Jumpstart, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving pre-school education. Each year, children all across the country are read the same book on the same day, raising awareness of the importance of reading to young children beginning at a very early age and raising money for early childhood education programs. Schools report back to Jumpstart on how many children were read the book and a final tally is announced. In 2013, nearly 2.5 million children read “Otis” by author Loren Long, once again breaking the world record. It is an endeavor that is important to faculty and staff at Edison Elementary School, and this is the fifth year the

The school goes beyond simply reading the book in classrooms: they make it a day-long event with teachers incorporating the book into classroom instruction at the earlier grade levels. Among those who read
“Bunny Cakes” to the various classes were Dawn Mirand, superintendent of the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda UFSD, along with other district administrators, teachers, and community members. It’s an enjoyable activity for students of all ages, according to Gretchen
Seibert, librarian at Edison Elementary who coordinated the school-wide effort. “There is something about reading aloud to kids. It doesn’t matter if they are five years old or getting ready for middle school. They just like to be read to,” Seibert said. The final national count has not yet been announced.

Holiday shopping can be stressful. With long lists and a limited budget, sometimes its tough to find the perfect gift for everyone. Avoid the chaotic crowds and find one-of-a-kind gifts at the first annual Crazy Craftin’ Chicks Holiday Craft Bazaar. This bazaar and craft show will feature more than 40 local crafters and vendors. Ran by sisters Jessica Harding and Amanda Wozniak, this event will offer many unique, handmade items that will make great gifts for this holiday season. “We grew up in a family of crafters,” said Harding. “We’ve done shows in the past ourselves, but this was something we wanted to take under our wings.” Harding and Wozniak are included on the list of crafters for the show. Harding specializes in hand-painted Christmas bulbs, ranging in themes, as well as handmade ankle bracelets. Wozniak’s table will feature a variety of items that would make great gifts for a boss, teacher, coworker or friend. Wozniak said her crafts would also make great stocking stuffers. One specialty item she makes is snowmen made of hot chocolate mixes. All of their crafts are fairly priced and perfect for a shopper on a budget. Other crafts that can be found at the event will be wreaths, crochet items, gourmet cupcakes, homemade candles, ceramics, baby items and clothing pieces and more. While crafting is something Harding and Wozniak enjoy, it’s not the only reason they decided to host this bazaar. “We hope to give back to the community,” said Harding. “We wanted to give the community something to look forward to and to give back to local crafters and small businesses. I just want it to be good for everyone.” Harding and Wozniak are encouraging residents to come out to the bazaar and support the small businesses of the community, while also getting great gifts. “We decided on this time of year because Christmas is our favorite holiday and we thought it was a good opportunity to bring attention to small businesses,” Harding said. “I think when you shop at something like this, you’re getting a more unique variety of items. You’re not getting the same factory made item that you and 30 other people bought for your loved ones.” The bazaar will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at Rescue Fire Hall, 1241 Strad Ave., North Tonawanda. Admission is $2. Shoppers will also have the opportunity to participate in a basket auction, while enjoying food and drinks throughout the afternoon. Harding and Wozniak hope to make this an annual holiday event. “We want to bring it back every year to the community so people can look forward to this as much as we’ve looked forward to our favorite craft shows in the past.”

Animal rescue announces ‘Heart to Heart’ fundraiser
Heart of Niagara Animal Rescue’s third annual Heart to Heart Fundraising Event, “A Taste of The Niagara Region,” will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015 at The Conference and Event Center Niagara Falls, 101 Old Falls St., Niagara Falls. Tickets are $20 per person. All persons under age 18 must be accompanied by a paying adult. This event is a main fundraiser to help the rescue continue their work of rescuing animals in need, providing medical care and adopting them into loving homes. They are also in the process of trying to raise funds to be used for the purchase of a building, which will allow them to save more animals. Many favorite Western New York restaurants are once again supporting the rescue’s family-
friendly community event by providing samples of signature appetizers, main course items and tasty desserts. The continually growing list of participants so far includes: Bailey O’Riley’s Village Pub, Brickyard Pub & BBQ, Brio Pizzeria, Como Restaurant, Conference & Event Center Catering, De La Casa Mexican Restaurant, Donna Eick’s, Formal BBQ and Event Catering, Grandpaws Cafe for Good, The Griffon Gastropub, Honey’s Pizza, Johnnie Ryan Company, La Galera Mexican Restaurant, Mangia Cafe and Bakery, Niagara University College of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Orange Cat Coffee Company, The Spicey Pickle Mexican Restaurant, The Village Bake Shoppe and Waterstreet Landing. Guests will vote on
their favorite dish at the event and then name “The Best of The Taste of the Niagara Region.” Over $1,000 in prizes will be given away in a very large basket auction and other major prize drawings including overnight stays at The Barton Hill Hotel and Spa, a Moondance Summer Cruise for 40 persons, and an “experience” prize consisting of a WGRZTV studio tour and a live viewing of the 5 p.m. Evening News. Music, prizes and entertainment will be provided by Classic Hits 104.1 WHTT and the acoustic pop/rock sounds of Lewiston Music’s Tony Petrocelli and his student, Vincent Bonelli. Purchase tickets on line through PayPal at www. heartofniagara.org, Heart to Heart event page; or pay by check or money order
made payable to Heart of Niagara Animal Rescue and mail to Heart of Niagara Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 462, Lewiston, NY 14092. Include an email address and phone number for receipt confirmation. Tickets will be held at the door for each guest. This eliminates the added cost of postage to mail the tickets to you. Heart of Niagara is a 501c3 not for profit companion animal rescue organization based in Niagara County whose mission is to protect the health and welfare of abandoned, unwanted and homeless animals. They have adopted out over 250 animals to date all over Western New York, Canada and out of state. Heart of Niagara’s growing Facebook page has over 2,600 followers and they welcome new
