Football players help students with reading, writing
The day before their homecoming celebration, most Kenmore West High School varsity football players could be found reading alongside much younger students at Lindbergh, Roosevelt and Holmes elementary schools. The players – including the iconic Blue Devil mascot – provided feedback to the children, who eagerly showcased their most recent writing and reading assignments. This is the third year that
Matt O’Malley, a special education teacher and assistant varsity football coach at Kenmore West, has brought the players out to elementary schools to read alongside younger children, and it has become an annual tradition, growing each year. “I think it’s important for the players to read to kids, especially since, when they get older, they are going to be reading to their own children,” O’Malley said. It was a coincidence the
event fell the day before homecoming, but that didn’t deter the players from taking part. They started at Lindbergh Elementary School, where they not only read with the children but engaged them in a pickup football game too. At Roosevelt, they worked alongside struggling readers who have been working hard to advance their literacy skills. Finally, they finished the day with two classroom visits at Holmes. The younger students

were excited to be paired with the players, who wore their jerseys and were accompanied by the Blue Devil mascot. The first year, O’Malley only took his players to one class at one school, but the program has expanded over the past two years when it was so wellreceived. “I didn’t know what to expect at first but it surprised me in a very positive way,” O’Malley said. “These kids do a fantastic job. When we put them in a position to be
successful, they do it.” O’Malley expressed his appreciation toward Brett Banker, district athletics director, and Rich Harris, head coach, for their support for the program. The activity accomplishes a lot. For one thing, it shows the elementary school students that the players on the field are also students in the classroom. It is also a learning experience for the players. “It is important for the younger students to see our
athletes in class,” O’Malley said. “But it’s not just important for the younger kids. We are trying to mold these young men who are probably going to be fathers at some point.” And as for the younger students, it gets them excited about what they are reading and writing in class. “To have a different kind of audience is really exciting for them,” said Rita Klipfell, a teacher at Holmes Elementary School.

‘Weekend Update’ anchor connected to the Queen City By: Lauren Kirchmyer When Seth Meyers left the desk of “Weekend Update” on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” fans were wondering who would replace him. Although it looked as though it would be cast member Cecily Strong, Lorne Michaels asked the show’s head writer, Colin Jost, to fill Meyers’ shoes alongside comedian Michael Che. “Getting ‘Weekend Update’ has been the biggest moment of my life,” Jost said. “To perform on ‘SNL’ and be part of the cast and tradition is really cool.” But if you look at his life prior to his “Saturday Night Live” career, you may be surprised Jost is where he is today. “There are many people in my family history who worked in the engineering industry,” he explained. His father, an East Aurora native, worked for Struthers Wells in Buffalo, prior to moving to New York City to work for Procter & Gamble. Jost, on the other hand, enjoyed making people laugh while growing up in Staten Island. In sixth grade, he and his friends convinced their teacher to let them perform skits from “Saturday Night Live” for the class. When it came time to decide what he wanted to study for his undergrad however, Jost picked something far from comedy. The Harvard graduate studied the history and literature of Russia and Britain because he enjoyed reading. “I didn’t know I could have a job in
comedy. I thought it was just a fun thing to do on the side.” When he graduated college, Jost decided to submit a packet of his writing to “Saturday Night Live.” He didn’t hear back and six months later submitted a second packet. This time he received a phone call and went in for an interview with the show’s head writer, Tina Fey. She liked Jost and he moved on to another interview, with Michaels. “At the end he was like, ‘I’ll be seeing you around,’” Jost said about the show’s creator and producer. “I was not sure what it meant. Then I got a call interpreting what Lorne said and I started the next week.” His writing received a lot of laughs and Jost worked his
way up the “SNL” writing chain, earning him Emmy nominations along the way. Some of his favorite skits include when the cast sang Billy Joel’s “Goodnight Saigon” on Will Ferrell’s finale show, when Jonah Hill serenaded his “wife” for their anniversary and when Vanessa Bayer portrayed Miley Cyrus after her performance on MTV’s Video Music Awards. His favorite guests to write for are the ones who have an inherent comedy in them, such as Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifanakis and Emma Stone. He hopes to someday have the chance to write skits for comedians Eddie Murphy and Stephen Colbert, as well as actors Kate Winslet and Michael Keaton.
Outside of “Saturday Night Live,” Jost enjoys performing stand-up shows. “I’m a lot looser and goofier than the news anchor character I play on ‘Weekend Update,’” he said. To prepare for his shows, Jost spends time exploring the cities he’s performing in. Last week, Jost performed at Bear’s Den Showroom at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino. Before his show, he explored the American and Canadian sides of the falls and roamed around the city his father grew up in. “It’s so beautiful,” he said about the area. “It’s really cool to wander around and see the town.” Jost is also working on starting a career writing screenplays for movies. “It’s the hardest writing process because there’s so much going on. You have to make the script unique and funny and interesting for the viewer.” After having multiple screenplays rejected, or being accepted but having nothing created, his first movie finally came through. “Staten Island Summer,” a film filled with “Saturday Nigh Live” cast members about lifeguards who are spending their last week of summer together before they go away to college, is expected to be out in the spring or summer of 2015. “I’ve learned I’m pretty resilient,” Jost said. “If you really want something, stick with it and work at it. Eventually you will break through in some way.”

Bowzer’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Party is the most fun way to revisit the music and the classic era of the 50’s and early 60’s. As the leader of “Sha Na Na,” Bowzer was seen in millions of households every week on Sha Na Na’s number one syndicated TV series, and he still brings the same energy to the stage as the host and star of his show, strutting and flexing his puny biceps and belting out his basso profundo.

‘Girl Code’ star comes to Buffalo By Lauren Kirchmyer
ENTERTAINMENT REPORTER
Syracuse native Jessimae Peluso grew up making her family and friends laugh. As she grew older she decided she never wanted to work for a boss, so she moved to Boston to work on improvisation and stand up comedy. In 2006, she packed her bags and moved to New York City. “It takes a long time to get funny,” she said, stating it takes a combination of ambition, humility and taking risks to make it in the comedy circuit. “I love connecting to random strangers by talking to them. I’m so fortunate to do it and make a living off of it.” Peluso found her best shows happened when she remained as genuine as possible on stage. One day, while performing stand up in New York City, her raw and unpredictable sense of humor attracted the casting directors of MTV’s “Girl Code” and she was invited to audition for the show. “Being approachable and having humility on stage served me well,” she said. The casting directors liked Peluso and asked her to join the show’s cast. “Girls have a hard time growing up in this culture,” Peluso said. She loved that being a part of “Girl Code” gave her the opportunity to talk about various insecurities girls face while sharing her own experiences on how she survived them

She said I was her favorite girl from ‘Girl Code’ and asked if she could have her picture taken with me,” Peluso recalled. “My mom was so excited and was beaming with pride. It was a special moment for me. I’m doing all of this for my family. I want to be able to take care of them.” Though she misses her family and the Western New York accent, the self-proclaimed “lazy kid” learned she could achieve anything when she dedicates herself. “Find something you want so bad you would sacrifice everything to do it,” she said. “I’m fortunate to have found that.” She hopes to continue writing for magazines and appearing on television. writing a memoir and is on tour performing stand up. Peluso will visit Buffalo – for her first time ever – to perform at Helium Comedy Club, located at 30 Mississippi St. in Buffalo. Her shows begin at 7:30 and 10 p.m. Saturday. General admission tickets are $20 and may be purchased at www. heliumcomedy.com/buffalo. A meet and greet will take place after every performance. “I invite all single firemen to come see my show,” Peluso said. “I love upstate people. I’m excited to perform for real, hardworking people and stuff my face with delicious Buffalo wings and upstate food.”

Beilein aims to build continuity on a NCCC men’s basketball team that boasts nine freshmen
COURTESY OF NCCC ATHLETICS
The 2014 NCCC men’s basketball team is looking to build on a 22-7 season despite playing a roster comprised heavily of first-year players. By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
The offseason leading up to the 2014-15 season for the Niagara County Community College men’s basketball team was one of uncertainty. Head coach Bill Beilein found himself having to replace several key pieces from last year’s 22-7 squad and several key recruits that opted to leave the team just prior to the season. Beilein has done what he does best, though. He was able to bring in some new talent and return some top players from last year to help in trying to improve on last season’s first-round exit in the NJCAA Tournament. “I think it’s getting those sophomores to lead,” said Beilein. “As far as getting the extra workouts, the more reps they are getting the
better off the freshmen are going to be. They are going to be a little more knowledgeable of the system.” Most high school coaches will get a star player for three to four years, while a fouryear college coach will get a player for each of those year. But for a junior college like NCCC, Beilein only gets two years out of a player, so building continuity on the team can be difficult. Not only do the Thunderwolves have nine freshmen on the squad this season, but they lost five freshmen that contributed greatly to the success of the team last year. “The cycling process will drive you crazy,” said Beilein. “We’ve got nine freshmen this year; we have one kid that was a redshirt last year so he has a little bit of experience as far as practicing with us. It’s really about the kids and finding
kids with an IQ background of basketball so they can translate what you are trying to teach them quickly.” On the bright side, one of the three players that return from last year just happens to be the team’s leading scorer, Eli Jones. The 6-foot-5 Fairport, New York native averaged 21.5 points per game last year to go along with 7.1 rebounds per game and is primed to make the jump to earn a scholarship at a Division I or Division II school following the season. “I worked out,” said Jones. “I took the weight room really seriously. I lifted every single day, I ran two and a half miles five times a week, and I really worked on my shot and ball handling for this year.” Another key returner is starting guard Sheldon Zablotny-Crosby, who is
coming off of a season in which he averaged 12.7 points, 3.9 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. The Erie, Pennsylvania native will also be switching from point guard to shooting guard with hopes of adding another scoring punch. The Thunderwolves will also be relying on 6-foot-7 forward Jordan Green, who saw action in just nine games as a freshman. Beilein believes Green can be an inside-out type of player that can block shots and rebound on the defensive end. “Sheldon Zablotny is a returning guy who is moving to the two-guard position,” said Beilein. “We think he is really going to be able to put up bigger numbers points-wise for us. Jordan Green has a lot of experience for us and he has got it going early. We’re a system
that one guy is not going to go off. We like to share the ball.” NCCC will insert two freshmen into the starting lineup with forward Francisco Williams from Queens, New York and guard Corey Mendez out of Baltimore. Guards Mike McQuillen, Luis Hernandez, Isaiah Primus-Belgrave and McKinley graduate Deonte Bell will all see significant playing time, along with forward Aaron Jackson. Beilein thought he had some top local talent when he signed former Barker star Jake Haight in May, but he and former Roy-Hart standout Alex Stoddard opted not to pursue college basketball careers with the Thunderwolves. Bell and Medina graduate Dan Brown are the only two players from Western New York on the roster.
“We love to get the local guys,” said Beilein. “We just haven’t had much luck in the last couple years. Some of the local guys are living at home and I don’t know if they want to make the full commitment for what it takes to be a college basketball player.” While it may take some time to build continuity and for the freshmen to get used to playing at the college level, the goal for several of the players is to bring home an NJCAA Regional Championship this year. “I really want to come out with a regional championship this year,” said Jones. “I’m going to do whatever it takes as a player and I know that my team will do whatever their role is. I feel like that’s all of our goals this year and I’m just trying to make that happen.”

Thunderwolves think regional loss is fuel for big year By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
The 2013-14 season was one to remember for the NCCC women’s basketball team, but the final game may have been one to forget. In just his second season at the helm, head coach Nate Beutel led his Thunderwolves to a school-record 25 wins, but they came up just two points short in the NJCAA Regional Semifinals. With several very important pieces returning from last year, Beutel and his team don’t just see returning to the semis as an expectation, but as a form of motivation. They say adversity makes you stronger and CASPER has had a lot of adversity to deal with out on the street. He came running up to one of our volunteers when we were doing TNVR in Buffalo. It was like he was saying ‘take me, take me...’ and we did! He is mildly positive for FIV, is a real lover and has green eyes as big as his gentle heart... please consider adding him to your home. He is good with other kitties. CASPER qualifies for our “Special Kitties for Special People adoption promotion. If you would like more information, call Second Chance Sheltering Network at 652-6051.
