North Buffalo organization puts wrap on market
Patrica Banning took a final sweep through the North Buffalo Farmer’s and joked, “what am I going to do now on Thursday night’s?” Banning, and the other members of the North Buffalo Organization, have indeed been quite busy every Thursday night since April as they have taken part in the first season of the North Buffalo Farmer’s Market which officially put the wrap on its first season on Nov.6. Though spotty rain and an unwelcome blast of cold weather put a bit of a damper on the Market’s final day, as whole the year was a resounding success. Seemingly each week a new vendor or two joined the loop of the Farmer’s Market as more and more residents discovered the hidden treasure that was held in the parking lot of Holy Spirit Church on Hertel Ave, near Delaware. As the weeks unfolded a sense of familiarity and community began to cultivate among the vendors and the weekly regulars. “It’s been more than we ever expected it to be,” said Christina DiFrancesco, who has been with the North Buffalo Farmer’s Market since day one. “The amount of community (support). The people that come together here and build relationships has been really wonderful.”
DiFrancesco said that regulars began to look forward to the market more and more each week. “Even more so than the people coming together building relationships we see businesses come in and establish relationships with the different vendors,” she said. “We have Craving and Joe’s Deli come in and buy continuously from these farmers and promote them.” Featuring all locally grown produce, jams, coffee, home made doughnuts and other baked goods many of the vendors have already inquired about securing a spot next summer. Though the first year can certainly be deemed a success, Banning and DiFrancesco know things can be improved on going into next season. The most consistent complaint from shoppers who came later in the market’s 3-7 time frame was the limited selection in that final hour. DiFrancesco said an advisory board will be established to meet with the public in the coming months to discuss ways to improve on the North Buffalo Farmer’s Market and to keep getting that all important feedback from the public. Mark your calender, the opening of the 2015 Farmer’s Market will be here quicker before you know it.

Middle school students share their love of Origami Thanks to a new club formed by two sixth grade students at Kenmore Middle School, their classmates have all the more reason to look forward to Fridays. Best of all, it is an activity that has a lot of educational benefits. It is a new origami club run entirely by students for students. During academic support period on Fridays in the Kenmore Middle School library, sixth graders Anthony Balash and Emily Trifilo teach participants how to take a single square piece of a paper and transform it through a series of complex folds into a crane, a ninja star, a box, and a multitude of other creations. “Anthony came to us and said, ‘I think we should have an origami club.’ It was his idea. We only facilitated it. We let him take the lead,” said Kimberly Conrad, library media specialist at the Middle School. “I cannot thank Anthony and Emily enough for providing an activity that involves critical thinking and is fun for his classmates.” On Fridays, Anthony and Emily help their classmates learn traditional origami techniques. At a session recently, in less than 30 minutes, they helped more than a dozen participants complete the best-known origami shape: the Japanese paper crane, also

It is the act of taking something as simple as a blank sheet of paper and making it into something so much more that captured Anthony’s interest. “You can turn paper into
animals and make them move, and it’s just paper – no tape, no glue. I think that’s pretty cool,” Anthony said. Emily shared his enjoyment of origami, and together they decided to
start the club. “I knew how to make a ninja star, and he has helped me with animals,” said Emily, who expressed the same reasons for enjoying the activity as Anthony. “I like it because there is no tape and no glue – just folds.” One thing that impressed Conrad was the effectiveness of Anthony’s style of teaching. When he showed the students how to make the folds, he did it with his back turned in order to make it easier for them to follow. He initiated group work. And he would walk around the room seeing how everyone was doing and helping them along the way. “He was so patient with the students too,” said Karen Peehler, library media aide. There are many educational benefits to origami. In addition to strengthening social skills and teaching patience and persistence, it also has close connections to skills critical in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. “It’s an activity that combines the social aspect of students getting together around a common interest with the rigor of higher order thinking and problem solving,” said Kenmore Middle School Principal Elaine Thomas.

No Frills Buffalo releases two new books No Frills Buffalo publishing company, based in Buffalo, recently released two new books, a children’s book by author Dolores A. Esposito and a fiction novel by Kevin Richard White. “Benty,” written by Esposito and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds, is a delightful tale of a bunny whose unusual ear makes a world of difference. Esposito is a former elementary school teacher and registered nurse. She wrote this story 50 years ago as a class assignment for her storytelling class at Framingham State College. After raising her family and retiring to West Palm Beach, she decided to finally publish her book. White’s “The Face of a Monster” is the story of two college-age girls — Browyn, an anarchist, and Elaine, a go-getter — who meet at a support group for those that have lost parents. Both of their fathers passed in different ways, but they strike up an abrasive yet charismatic friendship through their grief, anger and quirks. They both try to make sense of life after death, trying to become new people despite missing a vital piece of what made them alive in the first place. In this they learn what they’re truly hiding from, a truth they cannot defeat and an acknowledgement that faith is more of a struggle than a feeling. Half memoir, half fiction, “The Face of a Monster” is an examination of friendship, family and the curse of memory. White is also the author of “Handprint on the Windshield,” a poetry collection, and “Steep Drop,” a novel. He resides in Pennsylvania. Books published by No Frills Buffalo can be purchased online at www.amazon.com, www.powells.com, www.barnesandnoble.com and www.nofrillsbuffalo. com. “Take a $50 bill, light it with a match and watch it burn!”
I’m serious. Go ahead and do it. What? You refuse? DO it anyway and see how it makes you feel. Painful wasn’t it? (Or were you just too chicken?) Well, guess what? Every day you run your furnace, you might as well take a $50 bill, light it with a match and watch it burn. Here’s why: That’s what your furnace is doing to you now. How do I know this? Simple. I know your furnace probably hasn’t been rejuvenated to factory fresh condition since the day it was installed. And every hour of every day it runs, it gets a little further out of adjustment, wasting slightly more gas for every unit of heat, costing more and more to operate. So, what can you do about this annoying situation? I’m glad you asked. Again, the answer is simple. Have a professional heating technician rejuvenate your furnace. To get the job done right, it will take about one and a half hours and $200 worth of labor and materials. The nice thing about a service like this is it usually
pays for itself several times over during the course of the winter... ...And if you call me for the service, not only will I have one of my top technicians do your rejuvenation for only $79, I will also guarantee your furnace won’t break down for the rest of this winter season. If it does, I WILL REFUND 100% OF YOUR MONEY. Why am I doing this for a price that’s below my total cost? Once again, it’s simple. I have just increased my capacity to handle an additional 125 new clients. And rather than lose money for the time it usually takes to attract that many clients, I thought I’d just pass that amount along to you in the form of savings and what I hope is an irresistible offer. There you have it. You can’t lose, no matter what happens. The only danger you have is waiting too long and missing out on the opportunity. Our Super-Tune Up can save you up to 33% off your utility bills! Call now for your appointment... 694-8524.

Store your mower in eight easy steps (NAPSI)—Chances are, your lawn mower has been a faithful fair-weather companion. So at the end of the mowing season, you want to give it the attention it deserves. Here are some tips on what you can do now to be sure your mower will start easily next mowing season. • Make sure your operator’s manual is on hand for quick reference whenever you work on your mower or any such equipment. • Remove the spark plug lead wire from the plug before doing any mower maintenance, and tape or tie it out of the way. • Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place away from gas cans, the water heater or furnace. • Change the oil. Old oil has lost much of its ability to coat and protect engine components, which could lead to damage down the
road. Most people avoid changing the oil in their lawn mower because they think about having to tip the mower over to drain the old oil. They worry about spills in the driveway and a mess of rags and cardboard to catch spills. Oil removal kits make the process easier and a lot less messy. For example, the Briggs & Stratton 1.6-liter oil extractor pump has a long-reach hose so oil can be extracted through filler or dipstick holes. It is important to return and recycle used oil at the proper collection center in your community. • Clean your mower. Brush or hose off leaves, grass and mud. Gently tip your walk-behind mower on its side to spray the underbody. If debris is caught on the blade, use a stick or tool to remove it—never use your hands. • Use a fuel stabilizer.
Never store your lawn equipment with a partially full fuel tank. Either run the equipment out of fuel or use fuel stabilizer in a full tank of fuel. Add Advanced Formula Fuel Treatment and Stabilizer according to the package directions. Then—and this is important—run the mower for a few minutes so the stabilizer circulates through the carburetor. The stabilizer keeps fuel fresh for up to six months. Turn off the engine and completely fill the gas tank. A full tank will help prevent moisture from condensing in the tank, which can form rust that could break away and clog the carburetor. • Store your mower in a dry, protected place such as your garage or a garden shed. Never store it next to a furnace, water heater or appliance with a pilot light.

Canisius downs Joe’s, claims 15th straight MMAA crown By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER
It was Trevor Gooch’s turn to be lifted in the air at the end of the season. Gooch had 16 kills and three blocks as Canisius defeated St. Joe’s 3-1 Nov. 5 at St. Joe’s to claim its 15th consecutive Monsignor Martin Athletic Association playoff title. Rebounding from a 2521 loss in the opening set, Canisius stormed back to win the next three by scores of 25-13, 25-17, and 25-18. When the Crusaders notched the final point, their fan base stormed the floor in celebration. They lifted Gooch onto their shoulders as he led them in the “I believe we have won” victory cheer. “It was pretty unreal,” Gooch said with a smile. “(When I was) a sophomore they lifted up Dave Jepsen, last year they lifted up Tom Sullivan. This year it was me so it was pretty unreal. It was awesome.” During training camp, Marauders co-captain Anthony Berardi stated how their team was on a mission to end Canisius’ winning streak. Led by the play of Berardi and Jacob Donn (13 kills), the Marauders almost did pull off the unthinkable upset as they clearly controlled play in set one. “I think that was the chemistry that we were looking for all year,” said Berardi. “Right there in that one set. But like it’s been

point and the defense, led by Andrew Helwig, was solid. But it was the blocking of Daniel Berry, Andrew
Schake and Peter Crofut (four blocks) at the net that stifled the Marauders’ offense as the night progressed. “We talked coming in that we needed to figure out a way to get through the first set, because any time you play Joe’s, the emotions. You heard all the craziness out there,” said Canisius coach Tom Weislo. “To St. Joe’s credit, they managed that very well the first set and we didn’t manage it as well as we needed to. I told our guys, ‘we’re not playing the way we are capable of playing. As long we’re doing what we’re supposed to do we’ll be OK.’” In the end, the Crusaders just had ‘the want’ more than the Marauders did and it showed on the floor. “We knew we didn’t play well in the first set and we knew that we were a lot better than that,” said Gooch. “Joe’s is a great team but we were working really hard because we wanted it.” The Marauders gave an all-out, honest effort. But in the wake of a defeat, a good effort rang hollow for everyone in maroon and white. “I’m not at all disappointed with their effort level,” said St. Joe’s coach Mark Anzalone. “They played hard on every single ball.” Added Berardi: “I’m proud of all the guys on my team. This was four years in the making. We’re all best friends. I’m just glad that I had the opportunity to come to St. Joe’s and have fun with my friends. That’s what it’s all about.” Sophomore Griffin Schmit had 10 kills for Canisius.

Nardin falls in Monsignor Martin volleyball finals By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER
Prior to the fourth and final set, Ashley Dryzmala put her hands on the shoulders of teammate Bailey Dolegowski, and whispered in her ear. “I told her, ‘we’re winning this game,’” said Dryzmala. “‘This is our game. This is our house.’” It was indeed the Lancers’ house and their game. Dryzmala had 26 kills and 22 digs as No. 1 St. Mary’s of Lancaster beat No. 2 Nardin 3-1 in the Monsignor Martin AthleticAssociation championship game Nov. 5 at St. Joe’s. St. Mary’s eventually won the
State Catholic championship on Nov. 9. Dropping the first set by a 2522 score, the Lancers would take the next three by scores of 26-24, 27-25, and 25-20 to claim their third MMAA playoff title in a row. The Lancers now advance to the NYSCHSAAtournament that will be played at St. Mary’s on Nov. 9. All four sets were nail-biters that saw sustained back-andforth vollys’ as a bounce here or a block there truly could have made the difference. Down by as much as 17-9 in the pivotal third set, the Lancers proved that sometimes it isn’t the heart of a champion that is the difference maker, but the confidence of a champion. No matter how many times the Gators took the lead, the Lancers as a group never stopped believing that victory was within reach. St. Mary’s, sparked by Do-

Everybody’s out after No. 1. We’re used to people rooting against us in an atmosphere like that. I said this is our arena. We’re the gladiators and this is our arena.” The Gators received strong play from Megan Jepson and Emily Rand, who were both namedAll-Catholic first team, as well as libero Morgan Potempa, whose game-winning serve in the first set kissed the top of the net and fell dead center into open space. But as hard as Nardin played, it lacked that championship experience.
“I think so. St. Mary’s, they never quit,” said Nardin coach Matt Gutman. “It was unbelievable when we had them on the ropes, they battled for every point. They just gave that little extra effort that perhaps we don’t have big match experience to draw that out of us. They know how to close games and we’re still kinda learning.” The Lancers were also on a mission to win the title for teammate Leah Meyer. The Lancers’ 6-foot-3 outside hitter and league MVP sustained a season-ending injury during the Lancers’ regular season finale against Nardin. “Leah is my best friend. She is missed so much on the court,” said Dryzmala. “You can tell the chemistry is different because all of us girls are playing for her.” Dryzmala, Dolegowski and Caitlyn Meyer were also named first team All-Catholic.
Miller finds niche in Nichols athletics, qualifies for states By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER
It may have taken a little bit of searching for Hailey Miller to find her athletic calling. But once she did, she found it in a very, very big way. Miller, a Nichols School sophomore in just her first season of cross country, has qualified for the state Federation tournament that is being held Saturday (Nov. 15) in Wappingers Falls,
New York. Encouraged by her father, Chuck Miller, Hailey originally was a member of the Nichols soccer program her freshman season. Miller said that even though she enjoyed her time with the friends she made, deep down she had the sense soccer wasn’t the right fit. “I ended up doing crew in the spring and my coach from crew (James Cammarata) is the boys cross country coach,” said Miller. “We did a lot of training and running for endurance and he noticed that I was one of the faster ones who could keep it up. So he asked me, ‘hey, what about cross country?’ I thought, ‘well I’m not really all that into
soccer, so I might as well try it.’” With a bubbly laugh, Miller joked that playing soccer was a better option than taking part in physical education class. But her whim to give a new sport a try was definitely the right move. Her times improved with each race. She earned first place in an October meet against Sacred Heart and was recognized for her overall strong season with a spot on the All-Catholic first team. Miller added that even though soccer didn’t pan out, she absolutely felt the running aspect of the game laid a good foundation for her successful start to cross
country. While Miller is off to an amazing start, the transition to a new sport came with adjustments. “I thought cross country, you’re slow and steady, but there’s also a lot more speed involved in it than I ever thought there would be,” said Miller, who lives in Orchard Park. “I always thought you just kind of go. There’s not really anything (technical) about it. (Coaches) Mr. Potter and Miss Simmons show me that you have to keep your shoulders back and keep your arms in a certain way. There’s more than just running in the forest. It’s not just a stroll in the park.” Dubbing Miller as a
refuse-to-lose type of kid, coach Roddy Potter said that as Miller gains more knowledge of the sport, she will only get better and better. While Miller ’s teammates are happy to embrace a talented new runner to help the program get better, they’ve come to love Miller the person far more than Miller the runner. “She doesn’t know but they are all driving down there at their own expense to see her,” said Potter. “The whole team is going to go down to Wappingers Falls, get hotels and everything just to see her. And that’s just an indication of the kind of support that she has.” Miller said she can’t thank her teammates enough for
how they have welcomed her in. “They’re so supportive, it’s awesome,” said Miller. “Especially our captains Jessica Zhou and Erin Nebbia, they’re really supportive. They were so happy that I came. They knew me (as), ‘oh she’s the girl around school the coaches have been talking about.’ So when they actually saw me they were like, ‘yay Hailey.’ It was so awesome.” Chuck Miller wasn’t too crazy about his daughter’s change in sports, but a trip to states has swayed him a bit. “He was a little against it at first,” Miller said with a smile. “But after the first race or two, he warmed up to it.”
