Nichols Upper School performed ‘Our Town’ By Dave Ricci
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
There is putting on a show. Then, there is giving a performance. The Nichols Upper School Theater Program put on a performance to remember on Nov. 24 when they capped off three-show production of Thornton Wilder’s classic “Our Town.” Originally slated for Nov.21-23, the November Storm threw the schedule off a bit, as shows were moved to Sunday afternoon, Monday afternoon and the final performance on Monday night. The change in times didn’t throw the actors off one bit as the entire cast pulled together for one of the most memorable performances the school has ever witnessed. Elena Ciotta played the role of the Stage Manager to perfection, as she served as our tour guide through the fictional town of Grover’s Corners. Ciotta took the audience through the three act journey, pointing out the sights, sounds and telling us about the citizens of the tiny New Hampshire town in the years spanning 1901- 1913. Our Town focused around the lives of two of Grover’s Corners core families-the Webb’s and the Gibbs. Mr. Webb was played by Brady Stevens and Mrs. Webb, by Erin Callahan. Jenna Rich took center
stage as their daughter Emily Webb, who falls in love with and eventually marries neighbor George Gibbs (Sean Mann). Ryan DiPaola and Rebecca Regan turned in equally strong and believable performances as George’s parents, Dr. and Mrs.Gibbs. Jillian Gately took on the role of younger sister Rebecca Gibbs. The reason why this performance was so special is because every actor executed their role, no matter how large or small, with such precision, honesty and heart that it seems almost unfair to hold one performance above the others. But after watching Jenna Rich you couldn’t help but take a step back and say, ‘wow.’ The message of “Our Town” is about appreciating the simple things in life and not taking a single breath for granted. Rich drove that message home in Emily’s “goodbye, Earth” monolog. In it Emily, who had died while giving birth to her’s and George’s second child, was saying her final farewell to simple pleasure of, “food and coffee and hot baths.” Rich clearly believed every word she was saying as she delivered her lines with unequaled passion. “There’s so many things I can relate to as Emily in my own life. My mom’s favorite flowers are sunflowers,” Rich said. “So I took that and I just put my emotions, my real feelings
behind everyone of those things Emily was saying goodbye to. It was just so powerful because you don’t really know what you have until it’s gone.” Ciotta and Rich had the spotlight as the play pushed forth the message of
embracing life when Emily asked the Stage Manager if the living truly realize how beautiful life is. “No. The Saints and poets, maybe-they do some,” said the Stage Manager. “In the top of the third
act I talk about something being eternal about every human being,” Ciotta said. “I think that’s something that we can all take away. That there is something important about all our lives. And something that’s going to stick with us even
after we’re gone. That’s just great knowing I’m going to go through my life with the Stage Manager’s lines in my head backing me up everyday-you are something. You will be something. Every though you may be gone, you’re still going to be here.” It should be noted that Thomas Draper was outstanding as Simon Stimson, the bitter, alcoholic church organist/ choir director. The most challenging, at least early on, was the Monday afternoon show for the school. Knowing that their peers could be their toughest critics, it didn’t take the cast long to know everyone was on their side. “I think it was difficult to do in front of our peers,” Rich said. “But then you come to the realization that everybody is there to support you and they’re there to see you succeed.” “I think we’re all very impressionable at this age,” Ciotta added. “There’s so much that we’re soaking up because we’re teenagers. We’re just kind of figuring out this life. I think it’s something for us to go through, and for other people to see, and to learn this lesson early on in life that you have one life. And you really have to go for it. And we just really wanted to show it because I think it’s an important lesson that everyone, regardless of their age, needs to know.”

Daemen College opening state-of-the-art visual effects facility Marking an important milestone in a Buffalo Billion project targeting Western New York’s emerging film and television postproduction industry, a newly completed nearly $2 million state-of-the-art visual effects facility will be officially unveiled by Daemen College at a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for Dec. 5. The celebration will take place at 10 a.m. in the Daemen International Center for Excellence in Animation located in the Tri Main Center at 2495 Main St. in Buffalo. Daemen President Gary A. Olson, members of the Daemen community and dignitaries are expected to be in attendance. An open house for the community is also planned from 2 to 4 p.m. on
Dec. 6. The recently finished high-tech facility is the result of a year-long project launched with the formation of a college-business partnership between Daemen and Empire Visual Effects, a new post-production and animation company. The venture was funded by a $4.5 million Buffalo Billion grant, including $1.9 million to Daemen that was instrumental in outfitting the facility with the advanced equipment and spaces relevant to sophisticated visual effects work. With this support, it also helped create Daemen’s four-month visual effects certificate program that educates students on post-production work in the film in-

dustry. Offered through the college’s department of visual and performing arts, the program serves as a professional pipeline to new jobs. “With the new facility fully completed, it provides a rich environment for learning, training and business growth in the visual effects sector, making it mutually beneficial to our students and to Empire Visual Effects,” Olson said. “The region stands to gain from this unique collaborative effort that will fill a niche in a cutting-edge business and lead to job opportunities that are available right now.” The almost 16,000-squarefoot facility houses a new 85-seat theater and screening room, equipped with highdefinition and 3D projection capabilities, surround sound and a color editing suite. It is also home to a 20-student cutting-edge visual effects training studio, a green screen stage for an array of film and video production projects, and classroom and office spaces. Dr. Michael Brogan, Daemen vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, cited the positive educational aspects of having the program’s learning community centralized at the site of Empire Visual Effects. “Being exposed daily to this type of innovative environment creates a more robust educational setting that’s substantially beneficial to visual effects students as they develop highly specialized skills while also connecting them to professional opportunities in a growing industry in our area,” he said. In addition to serving as an educational-business setting, the new enhanced facility is well suited for showcasing student work and special industry presentations.

Elementary schools display photos Buffalo area elementary students displayed photographs that show their creative views of the community and environment at a Nov. 11 exhibit that culminated a collaborative project with Daemen College. Images from the Seneca Babcock Children’s Photo Show were available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the Seneca Babcock After School Program. During the five-week project, Daemen art education students worked with a dozen children in the after school program and instructed them on the basics of camera use. The young participants were then introduced to works by Jay Masiel, an acclaimed photographer best known for his unique perspective on capturing the environment and everyday life. “Jay Masiel wants people to see ordinary things in extraordinary ways through his images so we assisted the youngsters with using that focus when taking purposeful photographs of their surrounding environment and community,” said Dr. Mary Wolf, Daemen art education director, who

students received valuable experience in planning and implementing art lessons and engaging in art advocacy,” said Wolf. “They also learned about building rapport with the elementary students, managing student behavior and offering feedback to help the young participants improve their skills.” This year’s photo project follows an initial effort conducted last year with middle school students in the Seneca Babcock area. It was a resounding success and generated such great interest from elementary students that this year’s project was done specifically for the younger children, explained Wolf. The “Seneca Babcock
Through the Eyes, Hearts and Art of Children: Part II” project was an effort of the Daemen-Seneca Babcock Partnership established by the college’s Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement. The collaborative project was funded by the college’s Student-Faculty Interdisciplinary Think Tank. Daemen student participants included Kathryn Haessner of Moravia; Rebecca Haley of East Amherst; Nicole Pauldine of Sterling; and Emily Yeager of Endwell. In addition to Wolf, Cheryl Bird, executive director of the Daemen CSCCE, was involved with the project.

Local students given opportunity to study abroad
A memorial wreath was also presented to ECC officials by members of Amherst’s Main-Transit Fire Department, followed by local bagpiper Dan McQue’s stirring version of “Amazing Grace” and local vet Sam Piazza’s trumpeted “Taps” over the event’s hundreds of gathered attendees.
ECC unveils Fallen Heroes Memorial Park In honor of the week of Veterans Day, Erie Community College gathered with local veterans, police and fire departments, and community members to proudly unveil its first responder-focused Fallen Heroes Memorial Park— dedicated to students who’ve lost their lives in the line of police, fire or military duty—on Thursday, November 13 outside ECC’s North Campus Law Enforcement Training Academy. “This park stands as a tribute to those ECC alums that made the ultimate sacrifice,” said ECC President Jack Quinn. “It will now be a place for others to remember and honor to their sacrifice for decades to come.” The park—aided by donations from such local Western New York companies as Campobello Construction, Lakeside
Sod, Love Joy Metals, Inc. and Occhino Paving; design and construction work from the college’s Architecture Technology, Construction Technology and Visual Communications students; and completion by ECC’s Maintenance and Grounds Department—features trees and flowered latticework; steel silhouettes of veterans, police officers and firefighters; six towering flag poles flying the American flag and the flags of the five branches of the Armed Services; a 500-pound memorial stone, donated by ECC’s 117th Police Basic class and relocated from a nearby police recruit assembly area; and park benches and picnic tables for those looking to come pay their respects and appreciate the sacrifices of fallen heroes. To date, 15 of ECC’s alumni have been lost to direct combat in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars,
and two others have died while still on active duty in noncombat circumstances. Many of the region’s police officers and firefighters who’ve died in the line of duty were either ECC graduates or graduates of the college’s Law Enforcement Training Academy (LETA) as well, so the park will stand as a testament to their lives and the community they called their own. The morning started with the national anthem performed by First Niagara Center fixture Doug Allen. Morning remarks were made by ECC President Jack Quinn; ECC representatives Richard Washousky, Dan Frontera and Ed Hempling; and various attending elected officials before the names off all ECC alums lost through military, fire and police duty were read aloud.
“Qualified high school students are offered a unique opportunity to spend an academic year, three-month program or summer holiday in Europe, Asia, North and South America, New Zealand, Australia or South Africa as part of the ASSE International Student Exchange Program,” announced Leanne Bell, eastern director of ASSE. “Until a few years ago only a fortunate few could afford to spend a school year or summer abroad. ASSE has changed all of that,” Bell continued. Students 15 to 18 years of age qualify on the basis of academic performance, character references and a genuine desire to experience abroad with a volunteer host family in one of the many ASSE host countries. “ASSE families abroad are carefully screened to provide a caring environment in which students can learn the language and culture of their host country,” Bell explained. Summer exchange students live with a family abroad who might speak some English. Year and shorter-term three-month
program students need not have learned a foreign language as they receive language and cultural instruction as part of the ASSE program. ASSE students attend regular high school classes along with their new teenage friends. “ASSE exchange students learn by living the language and culture of their new host country,” Bell added. The ASSE International Student Exchange Programs was founded by the Swedish National Department of Education and cooperates with the Canadian Provincial Ministries of Education and the New Zealand Ministry of Education. ASSE also provides international opportunities for American families to host students from Europe, the Republics of the former Soviet Union (in the U.S.A.), South America, Asia, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. These select students are 15 to 18 years old and will attend the local high school for a semester or an academic year. Students or families interested in more information about the ASSE programs should call 1-800-677-2773 or visit ASSE’s website at www.asse.com.

Dunkin’ Donuts donates $25,000 to support relief efforts in WNY Dunkin’ Donuts today announced a $25,000 donation to the American Red Cross to support disaster relief efforts and those who have been impacted by disasters including the recent snowstorm in Western New York. “As those affected continue to feel the impact of the recent snowstorm, our goal is that the company’s donation to the American Red Cross will help provide assistance to the people who have been displaced by the storm,” said Tammy Monks, senior field marketing manager for Dunkin’ Donuts. Dunkin’ Donuts has 47 restaurants in the Buffalo market, and has forged a successful partnership with the American Red Cross over the past seven years through the “Give a Pint, Get a Pound” campaign, which has helped increase blood donations by providing a coupon for a free pound of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee to all presenting donors at Red Cross blood drives during the month of January. The campaign has achieved great success during the past seven years as Dunkin’ Donuts has provided more than 520,000 pounds of coffee to presenting donors,
and if one donation may help save up to three lives, Dunkin Donuts has potentially helped more than 1.5 million patients. Locally, approximately 40,000 pints of blood have been collected in Buffalo during the month of January since the inception of the program in 2008. “The Red Cross is grateful to Dunkin’ Donuts for their ongoing partnership and for this recent donation to help those who have been impacted by disasters such as the recent snowstorm,” said Chuck Marra, executive director of the American Red Cross, Western New York Chapter. “This generosity is reflective of Dunkin’ Donuts’ commitment to the communities they serve, and we are appreciative of their ongoing dedication to our lifesaving mission.” To make a donation to the American Red Cross, visit redcross.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Returning to the position of head coach after an extended absence could be a difficult proposition for most coaches. But not for Sam Belsito, who has seamlessly returned to the helm of the Canisius Crusaders Federation hockey team after being away from the program for the past three seasons. “It’s been a very smooth return back,” said Belsito. “The kids skated over the summer and we had some strength and conditioning (sessions) all summer long. I’m also a teacher in school, so I had all the kids in class. So I was very familiar with the kids. So it was pretty much seamless just jumping back into it.” The cupboards are far from bare as Canisius returns a solid core of experienced players led by by senior goalie Jake Nichols. Going 6-1-1 with two shutouts and 2.04 goals against average, Nichols gives the Crusaders stability in net and is someone his teammates trust. “He’s got a tremendous work ethic as well,” said Belsito. “He was very present all summer long. He’s one of the leaders in the locker room. He’s always there, he’s always helping out. He’s always working, on and off the ice. He’s very mature for his age.” Along with Nichols, the Crusaders will rely very heavily on center Alex Gioia. Belsito described Gioia, as the “heart and soul” of the team. Gioia will log considerable ice time play-

NICHOLS LADY VIKINGS Prep A hockey team set to return strong core of integral players JEFFREY T. BARNES
By Dave Ricci
SPORTS REPORTER
Success breeds success. Don’t believe that old saying? Then you clearly haven’t been paying very close attention to the Nichols School Prep A hockey team. The Lady Vikings are coming off a very successful 2013-14 campaign that saw them go 30-4-3 and win the North America Prep Hockey Association (NAPHA) title for a second year in a row and an unprecedented third straight CIASS title.
Nichols lost six players, all who went on to play DI hockey, but it does return 11 girls who have been key in the recent run of success. Leading the way for will be seniors Madison Welch (goalie), Olivia Zafuto (defense), Ashley Songin (forward) and junior winger Abby Welch, who is one of the most dangerous snipers in North America. Madison Welch gives the presence of a solid keeper who gives Nichols a chance to win every time she steps between the pipes. Zafuto, who is a converted center, still has an effective scoring touch.
Coach Scott Welch said what he likes so far is the way all of the girls thirst for as much knowledge as possible, but are also ready in an instant to help each other. “Last week was a great example,” Welch said. “We had one of our newer players struggling with timing coming across the middle of the ice. I heard one of the returners say, ‘Just follow me. Just follow me across the ice so you can see it.’” Nichols has a strong junior class that features Bridgette Prentiss on defense and forwards Rachel DePerio and Michele Robillard, who recent-
ly committed to Mercyhurst. Freshman Ciara Barone is one of the programs bright young stars who is expected to make an immediate impact. “I think they get along well,” Coach Welch said. “They like each other. They like to practice. I think the returning players are helping the younger players understand how hard you have to practice. Really pushing each other to put ourselves in the position to have success, once we start playing.” Nichols had to postpone its first two games due to the fact the bulk of its team was snowed in at home in the southtowns.
Nichols goalie Madison Welch is back in net. COACH’S OUTLOOK: “I think we’re going to be in the hunt again. The expectation in everyday in practice is to get better. We may not win every game, but to compete every time we step on the ice. I think we’ll be there at the end of the year.” KEY PLAYERS: G Madison Welch F Abby Welch D Olivia Zafuto F Ashley Songin
Five Nichols student-athletes sign Divison I letters of intent By Dave Ricci
SPORTS REPORTER
Tanner Schmit was wearing a purple tie with University of Arkansas Bears logos on it. Might as well dress the part. Schmit, a Clarence native, was one of five Nichols School student-athletes that signed their national letters of intent to play Division I sports in college. The ceremony took place in front of a packed Weigel Room inside the Dann Memorial Rink on Nov. 12. “It’s a big day for Nichols School. For Nichols athletics
and obviously for these five young student-athletes and their families,” said athletic director Rob Stewart. “Each one of these kids will be signing a National Letter of Intent to play college athletics next year at five different schools. I’ve been lucky enough to see all five of these kids play for four years at Nichols. It’s been a great pleasure watching them grow. Not only as outstanding athletes but as outstanding people, leaders and great representatives of Nichols School.” Schmit was joined by classmates Carson Gicewicz (St. Lawrence), Olivia Zafuto (Colgate) and Madison Welch (Syracuse), who all signed to play hockey, and Eliza Oak, who committed to Holy Cross for crew. While all five athletes worked
hard to get to this moment, Schmit’s journey to a DI destination had a few more turns in the road. Attending Nichols as a freshman, Schmit, who also has a strong passion for baseball, transferred to Clarence High School to pursue his love of baseball and basketball. But Schmit, who has also battled some injuries, knew the Big Green was his true calling. After talking with Jack Vance and some other former Viking teammates, he returned to Nichols his junior year. “I want to say thank you to everyone,” said Schmit. “I want to say thank you specifically to coach (John) Reinholz, coach (Todd) Banaszak at Clarence and coach (Jim) MacKinnon who got me to Nichols. There’s a lot of other people. My family, God. There are too many people to thank directly.”
Coaches from each of the four teams represented in this signing said a few words about their athletes in front of a room of onlookers that included family, teachers, classmates and teammates. Zafuto, a dominant center who was converted to defense, brings a fierce, competitive edge and team-first attitude. “I’m real excited. Nervous. Sweating a little bit, but really excited,” Zafuto said. “It’s been a dream since I was little to play Division I college hockey somewhere. So it’s awesome to finally be able to do this.” Zafuto, along with Madison Welch, has been a key part of why the Nichols girls Prep A team has won multiple titles and comes into the season ranked No. 6 in the nation. “It’s so exciting. Especially to sign with all my classmates,”
said Madison Welch, who will be following in the footsteps of older sister Kelsey, who also played at Syracuse. “It’s amazing that there’s this many kids going Division I. I’ve been thinking about it since I committed my sophomore year and I couldn’t wait to get to this point.” Nichols Prep A coach Scott Welch was proud to see the third of his four daughter’s sign a DI letter “She’s fun loving and is known before a key game, to my chagrin, to get up in front of her team and share the ‘Miracle’ speech by Herb Brooks,” Welch said, as the crowd laughed. “Or walking into the locker room with her singing, which is a scary sight as well, just to keep the team loose.” Proud to be able to sign, all five feel that sharing the spot-
light as part of Nichols’ largest signing group ever will bond them for life. “It was amazing,” said Zafuto. “I knew a lot of kids were going to be signing at the same time as me. So I realized a lot of kids would come to watch. But when I was on my way over here I saw a big crowd of people walking over to the rink. It was just crazy to see everyone coming here and see it packed.” Carson Gicewicz echoed Zafuto’s words that signing in a room with so many loved ones present, and with four classmates, made the moment even more special. “Every time we see each other we’ll always remember this moment,” said Gicewicz. “Nichols talks about community everyday,” Zafuto said. “It’s amazing to see everyone here. One community. It’s great.”
