ECC makes it six straight at competition For the past five years, students of Erie Community College’s celebrated industrial technology program have enjoyed fall seasons full of awards on the national stage of Mastercam’s Wildest Parts design competition. This year, they continued what has now become an annual tradition of industrial design domination. In a field open to students from over 74,800 schools around the country, ECC’s Michael Manzella notched second place and Paul Gojmerac added third place honors as the college’s participants once again mastered the decades-old contest’s postsecondary division. This is the sixth year in a row that an ECC student has been awarded either first, second or third place in the event, which challenges students enrolled in Mastercam courses to create a unique, original design using Mastercam software. Williamsville native Manzella earned his honor for “Reel,” a large and complicated titanium fly reel which featured expert milling, tight tolerances and an impressive attention to detail. Kenmore resident Gojmerac’s waterjetcreated “Sextant” not only

combined artistic and utilitarian qualities sought after by contest judges, but also exhibited an impressive level of ambition from the ECC student. According to Mastercam judges, “(Gojmerac) gained a much better understanding of the process of taking a concept through all of the steps necessary to become a finished product. The end result was a great learning experience and an attractive and functional part.” This victory is simply the latest victory for an ECC Industrial Technology Program that is leading the way in Western New York advanced manufacturing by providing trained graduates to answer the region’s dire need for skilled laborers, manufacturers and technicians. Its enrollment has surged over the past nine years and, thanks in part to the college’s $926,922 received through the U.S. Department of Labor’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grants Program (TAACCCT) in 2012, is now utilizing stateof-the-art training labs and advanced equipment for students eager to enter the area’s expanding industry.

Tools and tricks to tackle tough, cold weather yard work (NAPSI)—The steps you take now to clean up your yard and put it to bed for the next few months can set the tone for a more productive spring. Helpful Hints Try these tips for an easier and greener yard cleanup: • Remove dead leaves and continue to trim and mow your lawn. Trimming grass at a slightly lower level and raking up fallen leaves prevent matting under debris and snow. • Ready your lawn for next year. Prevent weeds by seeding bare patches, but give seed enough time to establish itself before really cold weather sets in. Now can also be the right time to fertilize to give your lawn the nutrients it’ll need to thrive next spring. • Trim dead or diseased limbs. Stormdamaged or lifeless branches can endanger your home and property. Protect trees and shrubs from further damage by using a chain saw to cut cracked, broken, loose or diseased limbs close to the trunk or nearest branch. A cordless pole saw is another option to safely trim high branches without a

ladder. • Trim those hedges. Trimming hedges can help them keep their shape until they go dormant. Trim hedge sides at a slight angle, with the widest part close to ground level and tapering slightly at the tip. This provides maximum sunlight and reduces heavy hedges in the event of storms and wind damage. • Prepare your tools. Clean, sharp and quality tools make it easier to tackle tough yard tasks. Clean caked dirt and debris from shovels and rakes and sharpen chain saws, pole saws and hedge trimmers. Consider new tools that make yard work easier. For example, there’s a new wave of lithium-ion battery-powered tools that make tackling yard work easier than ever. Homeowners no longer have to sacrifice power and convenience with new cordless tools, such as OREGON’s 40V MAX Cordless Tool Systems. They have all the performance of gas-powered tools, minus the hassles, and, because there’s no fuel to spill or toxic emissions, battery-powered tools are the environmentally friendly landscaping choice.

The Buffalo Zoo announced on Dec. 15, the name of a baby giraffe who was born in October. His name is Sampson. Sampson was born on Friday, Oct. 24, to mother, 5-year-old A.J, and father, 3-year-old Moke. Both are first time parents. The day was a special one for giraffe keeper, Vicki Hodge. Oct. 24 is her grandparents’ wedding anniversary, and also the anniversary of the death of her grandfather, whose middle name was Sampson. She named the baby in memory of him. The name announcement coincides with a series of billboards that were unveiled around the Buffalo area the same day, revealing Sampson’s name to the community. Community Papers of WNY, LLC and LAMAR Outdoor Advertising provided the billboards, “A New Baby, A New Year”. Ken-East collects items for Food Bank of WNY Kenmore East High School has collected 105,228 for the Food Bank of Western New York over the past 10 years through its tremendously successful food drive, Gobblin’ Up Hunger, which culminates with a member of the staff donning a turkey costume for a day. This year, the school is adding 6,866 food items to that total with more than 1,000 coming from a single class. The food drive is sponsored each year by the school’s Student Congress. All those donating get to drop their items into barrels designated for individual members of the staff. The staff member with the most items at the end of the drive is named “Biggest Turkey” and spends a day wearing a turkey costume. This year, that distinction went to science teacher Joe Allen with 2,646 items donated to his barrel. Allen wasn’t the only one who wore a costume, though. Nan Gallivan, a teacher aide in Michael Roy’s classroom, wore the costume for a day after Roy’s class collected a total of 1,029 items, nearly one in six of all the items collected school-wide. Michael Billoni of the Food Bank of Western New York visited Roy’s class to personally thank the students for their efforts. “I want to thank all the students in this building, especially you students for collecting over 1,000 items,” Billoni said. “When you get home and are sitting at the dinner table, you can look at your parents and siblings and say that you helped feed a hungry family in your neighborhood, and you can feel good about what you did.” Kenmore East has collected donations for the Food Bank of Western New York for the past 11 years through the Gobblin’ Up

All items go to local families in need, many of whom are residents of the in Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda school district. “Nobody should ever be hungry in this country. We have so much food,” said Jeff Diegelman, English teacher and co-organizer of the food drive. “We try to identify families in need at Kenmore East. You never know. It could be the student sitting next to you who is in need.” Students are the reason the food drive is so successful year after year, according to Jeff Liss, English teacher and the other food drive coorganizer. “Students are the main participants,” he said. “The food is brought in by the students. Students take the cash donations and buy the food. And students sort and organize the food items.” Teachers also step in to help the food drive by donating money and food and encouraging student participation and the competition for a teacher or staff member to wear the costume is a driving force behind the drive’s success.

“The kids in this class were really motivated,” said senior Stephanie Finn, a student in Roy’s class. “We wanted Mrs. Gallivan to wear the costume. She got third place, but that’s okay. We’re glad we did it.” All Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda schools have been helping the community in many different ways this holiday season. At Edison Elementary School, students and staff collected a total of 526 items during the school’s sock and underwear drive for the Ken-Ton Closet, as well as many winter clothing items for the school’s Mitten Tree, all of which will go to local families in need. The school is also hosting its third annual food drive through Dec. 23 with classes competing for the grand prize: a movie in the auditorium. Points are awarded per item with some items earning more points. Each year, Hoover Elementary School organizes the Hoover Helping Hands drive in which students and staff form teams and collect gifts, gift cards, food, toys and other items for families in

need. This year, the school will be helping 30 families in the community. Donations are made by students,

families, the Home School Association and staff, as well as many contributors from the community. A special

holiday tree is decorated with scarves and gloves that are donated to be added to the Hoover Helping Hands baskets.

their core three of Miner, Lewis and fellow senior Tanner Schmit. The key to getting back to and winning states was the building a support cast around their three veterans. So far, freshman Marcellus Cooper, according to Reinholz, has stepped up into that role and responded well to not only a higher level of basketball compared to JV, but a tougher class load than what he is used to. “That’s exactly what we’re trying to do,” said Reinholz. “We’re trying to help the new guys, the guys who have come up from JV or have very limited varsity experience. We’re trying to help them to become better basketball players. So if we don’t put them in tough situations, if we play teams that we are able to beat by 40 points, that’s not going to help them become better. So what we’re basically doing is throwing them into the fire. It literally is a baptism by fire experience. It really is.” Reinholz has unques-

tioned faith in the talent his team has. The key will be remembering the little things like sharing the basketball. “What we’re trying to teach the boys is trust your teammate,” said Reinholz. “Trust all of your teammates by moving the ball and passing it, as opposed to dribbling through guys.” Nichols defeated St. Francis Prep 64-59 on Dec.12. The weekend was a wake up call for St. Joe’s, which dropped both games to the visitors. Matt Fritz and Grant Beyer each sank 10 points for the Marauders in their 62-37 loss to St. Francis Prep on the second day. “Right now we’re talking about just playing as a team,” said St. Joe’s head coach Mark Simon. “Until we play as a five-man team (on the floor), a 12-man team, we’re not going to have success. So right now we’re just talking about becoming a cohesive unit.” Holy Trinity opened the weekend with a 64-49 win over St. Joe’s.

Kids Fitness Challenge held at Terrie’s Workout Center By Dave Ricci

SPORTS REPORTER

Rowan McNeil was just looking for any kind of athletic activity to fill his day after not being able to play hockey on Saturday. He got his wish — and then some. McNeil, 9, was one of several youngsters who went to Terrie’s Workout Center on Hertel Ave. on Dec.13 to take part in the Kids Fitness Challenge that was pre-

sented by Pump It Up Fitness. “He didn’t have any sports today,” said Rowan’s mother, Lisa McNeil. “Normally it’s unheard of not to have hockey practice or something on a Saturday. I just figured he’s been in the house pretty much all day, he helped his dad give the dog a bath. So I said, ‘Let’s go (to Terrie’s).’” Children took part in a series of 12 physical fitness activities ranging from push ups and jump squats to crunches, jumping jacks and planking. The event was to benefit

Kids in Sports, a non-profit organization that gears its efforts to helping young people find positive direction in life through participation in sports. The mission statement of Kids in Sports is to not only promote health and well being, but more importantly, to help less fortunate families pay costs for their kids participating in athletics. “It’s really just to keep kids off the streets,” said Cheryl Tabone, who is the president of both Pump it up Fitness and Kids in Sports.

“Too many kids are in trouble all the time. Especially as teenagers. So that’s a big motivator for me. To keep them off the streets.” The kids, all bursting with energy and excitement, assembled in the large workout room where Zumba and boot camp classes are held. Leading the event,Tabone led the kids in warm up stretches before putting them through a rigorous workout that no doubt resulted in a lot of early bed times that night.

Tabone, who organized a similar event in Chautauqua over Labor Day, said having the option of sports is so very important for young people, especially those who might struggle in their school work or are having a hard time finding their hidden talents. Sports might be that awakening that serves as a confidence booster for kids who are desperately in need of something positive. “We help kids play these sports that the parents really can’t pay for them,” said

Tabone. Receiving T-shirts and medals after the event, every kid went home a winner. And even though the medal was pretty cool and he had fun, Rowan McNeil confessed he still missed being on the ice. “Even though I did miss hockey,” said Rowan McNeil. Tabone said future Kids in Sports fitness challenges as well as an adult fitness — complete with happy hour — are in the works for the near future.

Local sports Canisius hoops already gelling despite short preseason, team takes third straight Tom Keenan Classic By Dave Ricci

SPORTS REPORTER

JEFFREY T. BARNES

Josh Huffman earned MVP honors in helping Canisius win the Tom Keenan Classic.

Given the short amount of time the Canisius High School basketball team had together prior to the start of the season, it was anyone’s guess exactly when it would be able to put the pieces together. Turns out the Crusaders didn’t need much time to find themselves after all. Joshua Huffman earned MVP honors as the Crusaders defeated McNab of Ontario, 77-73, to win the Tom Keenan Classic for a third consecutive time. Huffman (19 points) was

a perfect 11 of 11 from the line and Stafford Trueheart added another 19 of his own. It spoke to the talent and character of the team to gel so quickly after being together as a unit for only a handful of practices. “Obviously we still have a lot of work to do. It’s only been a few days, but since we’ve had a full roster, the work ethic has been phenomenal,” coach Kyle Husband before a Dec. 10 scrimmage at Kenmore West. “The togetherness is already starting to come together and I think the athleticism really kind of jumps out at you. I think we have a chance to have great size and be really athletic this year.” Huffman, the 6-foot-6 Trueheart (F), guard LaTerrance Reed and 6-foot-6 TJ Wheatley return as the core of the team looking to re-

bound after a tough playoff loss to Nichols last season. Husband said that he feels that Reed and Trueheart are among the best in WNY at their positions. Senior Andrew Heitzhaus returns and is looking to play a bigger role while the speedy and athletic Justin Jones, who transferred in from St. Joe’s, bolsters the lineup. “He’s a great athlete who’s going to be terrific for us,” said Husband. The Crusaders are also looking for big things from a very big young man, as 6-foot-7 Madut Ayiy (F/C) is up from JV. Husband went onto say that while every year is a clean slate that comes with its own challenges, he feels that this team has displayed tremendous chemistry right away and that every player

is eager to earn his keep and do as much as possible for the team. “I think without a doubt,” said Husband. “We have a roster of 12, which is more than I usually have which I’m really excited about. And every guy on that roster has got a chance to step up and play minutes. I think only time will tell who’s gonna step up and play some of those minutes in those tough role spots. Because ultimately those tough role spots are what defines a team.” Trueheart had 18 points and Jones chipped in with 12 in Canisius’ 69-43 win over Fordam Prep (NYC) on the first day of the tournament. Zach Koch, Charles Hart, Will Atkinson, David Thomas and Andrew Schake complete the opening day roster.

battling through that....I think it’s great to see the smiles on their faces and give them some presents.” Matt Gabel, who attended the party with his wife Tara and their other three young daughters, Macy, Grace and Ashlyn and his parents, said he really didn’t think his kids grasped exactly who the players were. But the Sabres were a hit because all of the kids could sense that the players were just nice people wanting to spend time with them. “The guys are really just down to Earth. It’s not about

them being professional athletes, I mean that’s huge for some of the kids, they signed a lot of autographs,” said Gabel. “But you could tell they were sincere about their interactions with the children.” Gabel added that he and other parents were touched by how many of the players’ wives and girlfriends were at the party and were just as involved with the activities to help make the day more enjoyable for the kids. From the Sabres perspective, knowing they have the ability to make fans smile

and forget their troubles, even for a just a little while, is a touching experience for them. “It humbles you as a person,” said Patrick Kaleta. A big kid himself, Zadorov was an instant favorite for Piper Gabel’s twin sisters Grace and Ashlyn, who wouldn’t let Nikita out of their sights. Echoing the thoughts of all of the parents, Matt Gabel said this wasn’t just a PR trip. “You didn’t feel like it was an obligation at all,” said Gabel. “They genuinely wanted to give back.”
