Hertel to host holiday Holiday Walk By Dave Ricci
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
The holiday season has officially arrived in North Buffalo. The 19th Annual Hertel Holiday walk, which is being held from 5pm to 9pm on Friday night Dec.5 and 11am to 4pm on Saturday Dec.6, officially kicks off the start of the holiday shopping season along North Buffalo's main strip. Shops, stores, restaurants and boutiques of all varieties will be open late on Friday to give shoppers a chance to discover the hidden treasures of businesses on Hertel Ave. with a holiday theme backdrop.
“We've extended our hours Tuesday through Friday, based off customer feedback, for the month of December. We're opened until 6:30,” said Erik Hoertz, owner of Caruso's Italian Imports. “Friday for the Holiday Walk we're opened til 9 o'clock. We'll probably do a gift basket give away. Anyone that comes in Friday night or Saturday can enter the drawing.” Business owners look forward to the weekend as it gives them a chance to highlight their stores and make the most of the increased foot traffic as people stroll down Hertel Ave., which has been decorated with Christmas lights and wreathes, as businesses compete in a decorating contest.
“People look forward to it all year long. They talk about it,” said Barb Madison, coowner of Parker Pharmacy. “We serve food and drinks. It's basically the kick off of the holiday season.” With refreshments available from most businesses throughout both days, Friday is clearly geared more towards adults who are looking to do some shopping before or after a night out. Bertha's Diner, located at 1430 Hertel, will host a cookie decorating session for children under 12 on Friday from 5pm-8pm. But Saturday is all about kids and families. The North Park Theater will be holding a special screening of the Christmas classic “A Christ-
mas Story” at 11:30am, on Saturday at just $5 a ticket. There will also be face painting at P.S. Accessories (12:30), story telling time at Globe Market from 2:30-3:15 and kids will have a chance to meet Santa Claus himself who will be strolling Hertel on both Friday and Saturday. The Aca-Bella singers will be out in force singing your favorite Christmas carols. Spot Coffee on the corner of Hertel and North Park will also be selling one dollar holiday drinks. While the holiday walk is obviously geared to help neighbors enjoy the holiday season it's also a way for businesses to say, please come see us more often.

Canisius’ long season gets a little bit longer Team wins third straight MMAA title, will play for state crown By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR
Mitch Thomas loves the sport, but even he’ll admit this season has been a long one for the Canisius football team. He had a major hand in making it even longer on Saturday (Nov. 29). Thomas rushed 13 times for 169 yards and a touchdown to help the Crusaders win the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association championship in a 35-8 victory over Timon at All High Stadium. In winning, Canisius will advance to the state finals Dec. 7 to take on Archbishop Stepinac in Uniondale, NewYork, meaning Thomas and co. took to the gridiron again this past week. “This has been the longest I’ve ever played football,” Thomas said after the game. “But I love it, so it’s worth it.” It’s been an especially long November for the Crusaders. The team’s final regular season game was on Nov. 1, and it didn’t play again until Nov. 13 when it downed St. Francis in the MMAA semifinals. In fact, Saturday’s kickoff marked just the second time in 28 days the Crusaders played an actual game. The finals matchup against Timon was originally slated to be played Nov. 20 at Ralph Wilson Stadium, but it was twice postponed due to inclement weather blanketing the area. Old Man Winter tried to prolong the seemingly inevitable Canisius victory once again on Saturday, but Crusaders coach Rich Robbins wasn’t having it. He was one of many with a shovel in hand before the
game to help clear off snow that blanketed the turf at All High. “It was good to get out here and compete again,” Robbins said. “We’ve got about a week to go until we play the state title game, so we can get back to our regular routine now.” The Crusaders’ regular routine is certainly one that produces wins. The state’s topranked team and the nation’s 34th improved to 11-0 in 2014 and won its third consecutive Monsignor Martin championship when it beat the Tigers. “I was asked if [winning] gets old,” said Robbins, whose club became the first MMAA team to win three straight league titles since St. Francis did it from 2002-04. “Absolutely not. Championships take a lot of hard work so you never want to take them for granted. We’re very proud of this championship. To win three in a row in this league is unheard of, so we’re very proud of that.” The Crusaders didn’t take long to strike on Saturday. After Canisius forced a Timon threeand-out on the game’s opening possession, Thomas returned a bad punt to the Tigers’ 5. Two plays later, Solomon Renfro punched it in to open the scoring. Canisius pushed its lead to 14-0 on its next possession. After a 47-yard rush by Thomas into Timon territory, Crusaders QB Jakob Loucks foundTyrone Wheatley Jr. in the end zone for a 22-yard scoring hookup. A pestering first-half effort from Timon, however, kept the Tigers within reach. On the first play of the second quarter, defensive end Desmond Stevens intercepted a tipped Loucks pass in Timon

Canisius will play No. 2 Stepinac for the Catholic state championship. territory. The Tigers responded by embarking on a long drive that they capped off with a Brandon May touchdown strike to Tyler Ringwood. That was as close as they would get. After Wheatley (six tackles, two sacks) forced a Timon fumble that the Crusaders recovered with less than a minute left in the opening half, Loucks dropped back and threw a 35-yard touchdown strike to receiver Justin Jones, who made a spectacular catch in the end zone to give Canisius a 21-8 halftime lead.
Jones added a 38-yard touchdown rush in the second half and Thomas punched one in from 5 yards out to make it 35-8. Robbins said it was important for the Crusaders to maintain a balanced offensive attack against Timon. They scored twice through the air, three times on the ground and had four different players find paydirt. “It’s tough to get everybody the ball, but we have a humble group,” Robbins said. “They don’t care who gets the ball or who scores, they just care about getting the wins, and we saw
that today. It was a well-rounded team effort by everybody.” During the second quarter, both teams lost a player after a face mask penalty assessed to Canisius linebacker James Thomas was followed by a scuffle between both teams. Thomas and Timon’s Derick Simpson were both ejected, which means that Thomas — the team’s third-leading tackler — is out for Canisius’ next game. Robbins said Thomas shouldn’t have been ejected and that the Crusaders will appeal the decision in hopes that
the senior will be allowed to suit up for the state championship. The league’s decision regarding the situation was unknown at press time. Canisius will take on Archbishop Stepinac (12-0) in the state championship game at 2 p.m. at Mitchel Field in Uniondale. “Stepinac is No. 2 in the state. They have a 12-0 record, they’re undefeated, and they’ve been blowing teams out down there,” Robbins said. “They have a ton of athleticism, they’re very well coached, and it’s a big time program down there. …It’s going to be a challenge but it’s one we’re looking forward to.” The Tigers, on the other hand, saw their season come to an end in the MMAA championship game for the second time in three years. The team finished 8-4 after opening the season 6-1. “I’m proud of them,” head coach Charlie Comerford said of his Tigers. “They never quit. [Canisius] is just too good right now. We have to do something to get better and get to that level, but I’m proud of our guys and I’m proud of the season we had. We lost to a great team.” While the Tigers’ 8-4 finish was a four-win improvement on their season last year, Comerford said that the team ultimately fell short of its season-long goal. “We had a good year, but there’s no moral victories here,” Comerford said. “When we start in August, our goal is to win a championship. We fell short of that, so we’ll have to get better for next year.”

The Monsignor Martin girls hockey team has seen plenty of success on the ice and many of the big names are back. But past success doesn’t guarantee future playing time. With a deep roster, MMAA players know they have to earn each minute and they’re eager to do so. “I have a group of kids that work hard,” coach Linda Mroz said “Nobody feels entitled to PT. Doesn’t matter if you’re a senior or a freshman, every game and every practice is a tryout, no lineup is set.” Monsignor Martin has a ton of returning talent and leadership. Senior defender Amelia Gajewski (Sacred Heart Academy) is the team captain. She’s back to lead the blue-line in her fourth varsity season. Catherine Radwan (Mount Mercy) will serve as alternate

Her coach described Radwan as “a bull in a China shop.” “She’s just one of those kids that gives you 110 percent every time,” Mroz said. “I can count on her to do play penalty kill, power play, anything. If I tell her, ‘I need your fanny in front of the net, that’s where she’ll be.’” Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Sacred
Heart) led the league in goals as a freshman and is expected to do even more as a sophomore. With the talented Rachel Lenard lost to graduation, Drew-Mead will be a target this season. “We’ve adjusted her role,” Mroz said. “I told her, ‘You need to step up and she said ‘I’m ready for the challenge, coach. I’m glad you put me here.’” The team also welcomes
back junior Brynn Wopperer (Sacred Heart), who scored a goal in her first game this season after missing last year. Also on defense, junior Maeve Christ (Mount St. Mary) is one of the top offensive defenseman in Western New York. Kayla Blos (Sacred Heart) is also looking strong as a freshman as a forward. In goal, Monsignor Martin welcomes back Brianna Gawronski (Mount Mercy) and Makenna Walp (Sacred Heart) and MMAA also has a third goaltender in Julianna Kersten (Sacred Heart). All three girls are sophomores. MMA’s roster consist of nine players from Mount Mercy, eight from Sacred Heat, two from Nardin and one apiece from Mount St. Mary and Niagara Catholic. But, while they may compete in other venues, they’re friends when they step on the ice. “Mount St. Mary and Sacred Heart have a huge rivalry,”

There are no issues. They’re not playing for Caz, not playing for the Regals, not playing for the Stars, or Sacred Heart or Mount or Nardin. We’re all playing together for Monsignor Martin and the girls have been great about it.”
Nichols Prep B hockey finds success on the ice By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR
Hockey at Nichols School is known for churning out top level college, and even, professional players. To be able to play hockey at Nichols is a privilege and is something
that is not taken for granted. While the school boasts the Nichols Varsity Boys Prep A and Varsity Girls PrepAteams, the top two teams at the school, they also have feeder teams in the program. One of those teams is the Nichols varsity boys Prep B team. The Prep B team plays in the same Canadian league as the Prep A squad does, against the same tough competition. Recently, the Prep B team hosted, and won, the Nichols Thanksgiving Showcase, which featured teams from
the Western New York Varsity Hockey Federation. “It’s the weekend, we just try to get some of the local teams,” said Nichols Varsity Boys Prep B coach Shawn O’Donoghue. “We want to make it bigger. We want to grow it. So every Thanksgiving we can have the local schools get together in a local tournament and be able to kick the season off.” The Prep B team is coming off a very successful 2013-14 campaign, one that saw it make the finals before losing. This
year’s squad has a mixture of both youth and veterans as O’Donoghue looks for the right chemistry heading into the league portion of the season. “For some of them, this is there first year dealing with prep hockey,” said O’Donoghue. “It’s going to be a learning experience, especially at that 14-year-old age. They have to learn to play together as a team unit, because you can’t do it on your own. That’s where I am looking for our juniors and seniors,
and our leaders on the team, to take care of business.” Like any second-tier team, one of the biggest challenges facing O’Donoghue and his staff is keeping the boys focused on the prize and task at hand. It is easy for 14- and 15-yearolds to get caught up in playing an individual game, so they can impress coaches at the next level. But getting them to play a team game will be more impressive to the coaches as they make their choice to call up a player or not.
It is that fine line that makes coaching the Prep B team tougher at Nichols than at most other high schools around Western New York. “For me, it’s take care of what you can control,” said O’Donoghue. “I kind of tell to just stay in the moment. Don’t get ahead of themselves, because all that is out of their control. What they can control is going to the gym. Staying after practice, shooting a few extra pucks. If they are taking care of those things, then the rest will take care of itself.”

Hoppy helped Buff State to first postseason berth since 2000 By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
Growing up in the shadows of Ralph Wilson Stadium, Kyle Hoppy learned what it takes to conduct the comeback drive. Six years after he seemingly hung up his shoulder pads, Hoppy is doing just that at Buffalo State. Hoppy, the quarterback of Orchard Park High School’s 2008 state championship team, led the Bengals this year to their first eight-win season since 1998 and their first postseason appearance since 2000. Buffalo State finished the season at 8-3 with a lopsided victory in the ECAC Southwest Bowl, during which Hoppy had the best game of his career so far, passing for 335 yards and five touchdowns, tying the school record. Better yet for the Bengals, the 23-year-old business major still has two years of eligibility left. After being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2009, Hoppy turned down a scholarship offer from Bucknell University to pursue a professional baseball career. He toiled in the minors for four years before reaching out to his former Orchard Park teammate and current Buffalo State assistant coach, Garret McLaughlin, about restarting his

Senior wide receiver Mike Doherty (Kenmore East) said the Bengals expected their first-year starter would pick up right where the most prolific quarterback in school history left off. “I knew Kyle was going to be good, because he was a state champion in high school and a playmaker,”
said Doherty, who graduated high school the same year as Hoppy. Hoppy showed a bit of rust after the long hiatus from playing quarterback. He was benched in the second half twice and briefly lost his starting job. But by the end of the season, Hoppy had put together two straight standout performances, and coach Jerry Boyes believes Hoppy could establish himself as the top passer in school history over the next two years.
“He has the skillset to do that,” Boyes said. “The potential is all right there. Now it’s just continuing to grow, from the mental aspect of the game.” Boyes said Hoppy made great strides toward the end of the season in reading defenses and calling plays at the line of scrimmage, a key element of the Bengals offense. Hoppy finished the season with a 54.1 percent completion rate, 2,258 yards and 22 touchdowns, one shy of the school record. He ranked first in
the nation with 18.2 yards per completion and his 9.9 yards per attempt were the best in the Empire 8 conference. His 161.7 efficiency rating ranked second in the conference and 18th nationally. He also rushed for 302 yards and five touchdowns, putting him in the top 50 nationally in points accounted for. “This was a great year,” Hoppy said. “I really came into my own after not playing organized football for five years and backing up Casey last year. “I’ve always loved the sport of football. I gave it a shot at baseball and it didn’t work out, but now I’m giving it another shot here in football and I’m loving it. Being here right now, it’s a great time to be here. I feel like I’m in a great place.” Buffalo State fell one win short of its ultimate goal of qualifying for the NCAA playoffs, but established a baseline of success by being selected for, and winning, one of the seven ECAC bowl games. “Coach Boyes always talks about making noise and this year we made noise in our conference and made noise nationally,” Hoppy said. “Now we need to keep making that noise and keep striving toward that ultimate goal of getting to the NCAA tournament and
winning some games.” The Bengals put 11 players on the all-conference teams this year, and not one of them was Hoppy. Linebacker Marquis Artis (Amherst), who was named Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Year. Doherty, the program’s all-time leading receiver, second all-time leading rusher Rich Pete, offensive lineman Brandon Lathrop (Kenmore West), linebacker Mitch Thomas (Sweet Home), linebacker Shaq Frederick, and kicker Marc Montana (St. Joe’s) were also first-team selections. Wide receiver Ryan Carney (Olean), defensive end Dez Howard (St. Francis), defensive tackle Anthony Sanders (McKinley), and cornerback Sherman Nelson made the second-team. Hoppy won’t have Pete to hand off to or Doherty at his disposal next season, but Carney, who set a school record with 12 touchdown catches, has another year left, and Boyes believes he has built the Bengals into a program that can withstand graduation losses. “If you’re doing things right, the faces change, but success stays,” Boyes said. “Tradition should not graduate.” Doherty, for his part, said, “If anybody is going to lead them to the (NCAA) playoffs, it’s going to be Kyle.”
