CPOWNY and Buffalo Zoo pair up to welcome giraffe calf By Lizz Schumer THE SUN EDITOR

There is a new face at T h e B u ff a l o Z o o , a n d Community Papers of WNY Inc. is partnering with the Zoo to welcome its first Zoo-born baby in some time: A baby giraffe. The male calf arrived in the middle of the night on Oct. 24, to first-time parents A.J, 5, and Moke, 3. Community Papers of WNY has planned a year of events and promotions, in conjunction with the Zoo, to welcome the newest addition to Western New York. A formal press release will be released by the Zoo and CPOWNY on Dec. 15, announcing the stillanonymous baby’s name, as well as the reasoning behind its new moniker. The newspaper group and the Zoo are working together to host a series of events and contests, to coincide with the calf’s first year of life, and CPOWNY readers will be the first to know, and participate in, these promotions. Baby giraffes tend to remain with their parents until they are around about 22 months old, so the organization has plenty of time to spend with the new little one. Special events will include a coloring contest, in which children in grades K-4 color a drawing of the baby giraffe and mother from a drawing template included in all community papers. CPOWNY’s 25 community newspapers by random drawing and each winner will receive a family pass for the Buffalo Zoo; two parents and two children. Next will be a contest for winning a named, baby giraffe plush animal, for sharp-eyed readers. A series of eight billboards by Lamar of Buffalo are located throughout the Buffalo metropolitan area that feature the photo and name of the new Buffalo Zoo baby giraffe. The first family from each of the 25 community papers to correctly submit all eight route and crossstreet billboard locations will receive the collectible baby giraffe. Outdoor bill-

boards will be in place for six weeks, starting Dec. 15. According to CPOWNY Director of Marketing Dr. Janet Gane, the baby giraffe’s arrival will be heralded by a year-long calendar of events, distributed by the 25 papers, as well as WNY Health Magazine, with a article focused on conservation and preservation of the animals’ natural habitats. “There’s a real concern about poaching of giraffes, and other animals are also in danger,” Gane explained, “So, we want to make sure our readers are aware of that, as well as the first to know about this precious little one.”

“We’ll be a big part of this baby’s first year of life,” Gane concluded, about the efforts. “He’s part of our family now, too.” For more information about the Buffalo Zoo’s newest little one, keep an

Be prepared and stay safe during winter driving months

Every start to the winter season, you promise yourself that this year will be different, that you’ll be ready for whatever blizzard Mother Nature sends us. We all know that winter driving can be a test for even expert drivers and you need to be prepared at all times. Before the storm hits, take a moment to review a few simple winter driving tips and double-check that you have the proper emergency gear in your vehicle to ensure your safety. Not all drivers are prepared for winter driving conditions, so take it slow when driving on snowy or icy roadways. Drive as the environment warrants, stay alert and reduce your speed. Due to poor visibility and/or bad road conditions, always leave plenty of room between cars. Brake early and slowly giving yourself time to stop and react safely. Keep a full tank of gas along with gas in your vehicle at all times. Before pulling onto the road, be sure to completely clear snow and ice from your car windows, mirrors, lights, hood and roof. Don’t use cruise control in inclement weather as the slightest touch of your brakes to deactivate can cause loss of vehicle control. Take extra precaution when entering and

exiting ramps and bridges as they can be extremely slippery. While four-wheel drive vehicles may help you get going quicker, they won’t help you stop any quicker – don’t get overconfident when driving one. Make sure your car is properly maintained – the better shape your car is in, the safer you are on the road. Have your battery and ignition system checked, along with your brakes, transmission and tires. All fluids in your vehicle should be checked and topped off: de-icing washer fluid, oil, power steering and anti-freeze. Change or adjust spark plugs, air, fuel and emission filters. Check your headlights, brake and taillights, blinkers and emergency flashers. If you ever get stuck in the winter season, be prepared by keeping these emergency items handy in your vehicle: a spare tire, wheel wrench, jack, shovel, jumper cables, tow and tire chains, salt or cat litter, working flashlight with extra batteries, bright cloth, first aid kit, ice scraper and snow brush. Extra clothing such as gloves, socks and hats, a blanket, a 12-volt charger for a cell phone, as well as non-perishable foods and bottles of water or juice are vital should you become stranded.

Mount Mercy Academy, Springville-Griffith raise more than $2,900 for WWP G reat Western

By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR

For the third straight year, the Mount Mercy Academy girls basketball team wasn’t wearing an ordinary uniform, because for the third straight year, the Magic wasn’t playing an ordinary game. Communities from Mount Mercy and SpringvilleGriffith gathered Saturday (Dec. 6) at Mount Mercy Academy in South Buffalo for the third annual Mercy Heroes basketball game, an event geared toward raising money for the Wounded Warrior Project. Magic players sported jerseys that read “Duty,” “Honor,” “Service,” and “Country,” — four words that head coach John Glose, whose team went on to win 34-19, said symbolize Mount Mercy’s purpose for hosting the event. “We talked to the girls before the game,” Glose said. “What they’re doing, it means even more because it’s going towards something great.” The Wounded Warrior Project, according to the organization’s web site, aims to “honor and empower Wounded Warriors.” It looks to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members, help injured service members aid and assist each other and provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured

In all, more than $2,900 was raised through donations, concessions, a 50/50 drawing and the raffling off of items donated by the Bills, Sabres and Bisons, and baskets donated by members of the Springville and Mercy communities. “We teach these girls that it’s so important to give back, and this is a great example of it,” Glose said. “I’m really proud of them for raising so much money. Springville took part in the event for the second straight year. While the Lady Griffins fell to 1-1 on the season, head coach Bob Gainey agreed with Glose that the event meant a lot more than winning and losing. “Both communities just came out in droves in support of a great cause,” Gainey said. “It’s great seeing parents from Springville and parents from South Buffalo really come together and give to an

2014-15 Basketball Preview Strong returning cast to guide Nichols in quest for second consecutive state tournament appearance By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

It’s a new year and a new chapter will be written. As the Nichols School Vikings come into the 2014-15 basketball season, they return their core three players that helped them capture the Manhattan Cup and get them to the semifinals of the CHSAA state tournament. “The important thing for them to realize it what happened last year is last year,” said coach John Reinholz. “This is an entirely new year. Just because we had success last year doesn’t mean it’s going to carry over to this year without hard work, and I think that’s something they’re understanding.” The Vikings will once again be led by their redwood-sized senior trio of 6-foot-5 Cameron Lewis, 6-foot-5 Chris Minor and 6-foot-7 Tanner Schmit, who recently signed his DI Letter of Intent to play basketball for Central Arkansas. “Yeah, it really doesn’t mean anything that we won last year,” said Schmit. “You could say that we lost half the team. We lost a lot of experience, but we have a lot of good younger kids coming back.” Schmit said having the mindset that victory is not guaranteed will make everyone work harder everyday. All three of Lewis, Minor and Schmit averaged doubledoubles in points and rebounds last season. But as good as

players that are experienced but we also have a lot of work to do because we lost so many seniors from last year to this year,” said Reinholz. “The three

guys that are our strongest players, they’ve got a lot of work ahead of them trying to get the younger guys up to speed with what’s going on and what

we’re trying to accomplish on the court.” Ken Williams, the top running back on Nichols football, has learned to adapt his physical

game to basketball and looks much more comfortable and confident on the court. Nichols has won four of its first five games.

2014-15 Basketball Preview Nichols girls progressing quickly, knock off Tonawanda to take Roy-Hart Tournament championship

By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

After the Lady Vikings dropped a 54-33 home opener to Mount St. Mary on Dec. 3, Nichols varsity girls basketball coach Bob Torgalski and his assistant Sandy Cunningham, in unison, said the same thing. “We are a work in progress.” That progress appears to be coming along faster than the coaches might have anticipated. Kellie Zugger had 14 points and Sydney Bueme added 11 points as Nichols edged Tonawanda 48-46 in the championship game of the Roy-Hart Tournament that was played on Dec. 6. Losing four seniors to

graduation, the Vikings lost key players who provided quality, consistent leadership as well. But they do return a talented core and some promising newcomers that will definitely keep them competitive in their share of games in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association. “We have a very young team,” said Zugger. “We’re all really close with the girls, a lot of them are sisters on the team. I feel like we’re really going to come together when the season gets started.” Zugger, who lost last season due to a knee injury, had more than made up for lost time in just three games. She led Nichols with 11 points in the loss to Mount St. Mary and her 16 points paced the Vikings 60-44 win over Bennett. Zugger also touched on the sisterly bond within the team’s family unit as

Kendra Jones, at least early on, looks to be the answer to the Vikings’ need for a point guard. Her speed, athleticism and tenacity will be key to her success at the position. The Vikings will also bring size to the floor with a trio of 6-footers in Sydney Bueme, Lindsay Hogan and Imani Dockery. Hogan a junior and Dockery (freshman) have both stepped up big. The belief within the ranks is the talent and chemistry is there. It’s just a matter of everyone staying dedicated enough to pull all the ingredients together. “I think we’re all athletic,” said Syndey Bueme. Jillian Boltz, Emily Selbert and Kylie Smith are also on the roster.

2014-15 Basketball Preview New-look Nardin girls eager to work for success By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

There is a new voice calling the shots, but the mission is still the same: Be your best. It’s a season of change for the Nardin Academy Gators as they come into 2014-15. Gone are key seniors Anne O’Brien, Nicole Frantz, Hannah Juhasz, and Isabelle Soares. Former coach Joe Dougherty has also departed to help coach at Eden High School. B u t , a s t h e y s a y, change is the nature of the beast in high school sports and the Gators are moving forward under new head coach Jack Coppola. “I think we’re gonna have another real good y e a r, ” s a i d C o p p o l a . “The thing is I just have to put them in the right

positions. Defense is our key. We’ll go as far as our defense can take us.” The Gators will be returning seniors Alyssa Lesakowski, Megan Jepson, Rachel Favre, and Leah Bellitto, who will all serve as co-captains. Though the Gators lost a lot to graduation, they return a solid core of leadership that tasted success, including posting three wins over rival Sacred Heart — two in the regular season, one ni the playoffs — and a trip to the playoff championship game where they fell to eventual Class A state champion Cardinal O’Hara. “ We k n o w w h a t i t takes to win,” said Leah Bellitto. “We know what we’ll have to do and what we have to work on. Especially the leadership role on and off the court.” Lesakowski, who transferred in from Kenmore West, blossomed as a true offensive force and took her game to new heights last season.

Same for Bellitto, Favre and Jepson, who are all coming off of solid seasons where they all improved. Coppola said he feels very lucky to have such a strong core to work with. “Meg Jepson is just dripping in leadership. She really is,” said Coppola. “She’s a calming force out there. She always makes the right pass, strong. She can play four different positions. To have a person like that, that’s phenomenal.” Caroline Colpoys, Ainsley Mann, and Laur e n Wi s c h e r a t h a l s o return to a team that wants to work as hard as possible everyday in an effort to get better. “I like our chemistry,” said Bellitto. “I know all the girls. We’ve been playing together for a while and the new girls it’s been no trouble for them fitting in. We’re very familiar with how we play and we want to help each other.”

McKinley enters season with 27-game win streak in league By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

It’s a season of change, and in a big way, for the McKinley High School girls varsity basketball team. The Lady Macks enter the 2014-15 season minus all five of their starters as four girls graduated and another transferred to another school.

But longtime coach Mike Sorrentino returns a hardworking, dedicated group of girls that won’t roll over for any team. They also come into the season backed by the confidence of wearing the uniform of a program that went 16-2 last year, took a second straight Canisius Cup title and has a 27-game winning streak in league play.

Though key girls have departed, Sorrentino believes the returning girls are eager and capable of writing their own chapter in the program’s history book. One girl the Macks will definitely be counting on will be senior forward/guard Naomi Walker, who put on a dazzling performance by scoring the Macks’ first 16 points in a 60-20 loss to Kenmore East on opening

night. “Absolutely,” said Sorrentino. “I think Naomi Walker caught that right away. She’s not living in the past. She’s moving forward. She’s really taken a leadership role on this team and the girls appreciate that. They’re looking for that and she’s proving that for them.” Though McKinley was on the wrong end of a lopsided

score, Walker showed her heart and character by never giving in at any point. “She is key and I know other team’s are going to key in on her and put a lot of pressure on her,” said Sorrentino. “I hope to see some other girls step up and contribute to the scoring a little. I know Naomi has got to dish off a little more and we’ve got a couple girls that have to step

up and hit those shots.” Senior Tarlisa Bolden and sophomore Karissa Antoine also return. McKinley will have to weather the storm early on as two other key players, junior guard Jaila Payne and senior forward Ivory James, are both injured. “I think they know that it’s a long season and you can’t rest your hopes or whatever on one game,” said Sorrentino.
