Double D’s Pizzeria goes the extra mile for its customers. how clean it had been kept and how it was absolutely perfect for what they had in mind. “It’s more work than we thought,” says Syracuse, but it’s clear that he’s enjoying every minute of it. “At first, it was really, really hard. But now, we’re at the point where we’re having a lot of fun with it.” They’re also setting themselves apart by establishing high standards right from the beginning. All their product is fresh – nothing is frozen, and everything’s made just for that day. They’re keeping it simple, and that’s allowing them to focus more on delivering an outstanding product, and to make sure that every pizza,
sub, or batch of chicken wings that goes out the door is up to their standards. Like the rest of their Cheekotwaga neighbors, Double D’s felt the effects of the recent storm. They were closed for one day, and although the driving ban put a temporary halt to their deliveries, they’re not only back up and running, but they’ve made some friends along the way. Double D’s was a warm, safe haven for a number of the town volunteers, city workers, police officers and National Guard volunteers who were in Cheektowaga helping to clear snow and return business to normal as quickly as possible. And when you’re fighting cold temperatures and seemingly
endless piles of snow, there’s not much that tastes better than a piping hot pizza. “We gave so much food to so many people, starting with the people who were here to help us,” says Syracuse. “One hand washes the other, and we wanted to do what we could to help.” Sometimes, lending a helping hand just means doing what you do best. Double D’s is located at 1060 Harlem Rd. in Cheektowaga, and they offer free delivery within a three-mile radius of their location. Plan ahead for the next disaster By Debra Kelly
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
With many businesses in Cheektowaga and the surrounding suburbs suffering devastating losses from the recent storm, now is the perfect time to start planning for the next one. The U.S. Small Business Administration is partnering with Agility Recovery to host a free webinar at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 9, to help area businesses develop strategies to get themselves, their employees and the business through crisis. “It’s human nature, but despite the widespread and unusual nature of recent disasters, many business owners operate under the assumption that the wildfire, hurricane, flood or earthquake “won’t happen to me”,” says Carol Chastang, Public Affairs Specialist for the U.S. Small Business Administration. “Since small businesses don’t have the resources of large corporations, they are much more vulnerable to being forced to shut down
for good after a disaster.” The recent storm is the perfect example of why small business owners – especially those in Western New York – need to have a plan in place in case of emergency. Emergencies that can mean the loss of an entire business aren’t just hurricanes, tornadoes and other phenomenon that rarely rear their ugly heads in Buffalo, but it could also be something like snow or fire. Recent statistics state that business losses due to disaster are staggering. In 2011 and 2012, nationwide, small businesses suffered a staggering $170 billion in losses. For individuals, that means an average of $3,000 per day in losses. “Recent mega-disasters like Hurricane Sandy, and seeing the impact these disasters had on the local economy have forced small business owners to take a more serious approach to disaster preparedness,” says Chastang. “And while more business owners are aware of the concept of business continuity and know the basics of putting a plan together, few are thoroughly prepared.”
Crossword Answer
That’s where the SBA and Agility Recovery come in. They’re well aware that the resources of the small business owner are often stretched to the limit as it is, and they’re hoping to get the word out that there’s plenty of excellent, free resources available when it comes to setting up a plan to help your business weather any disaster. The American Red Cross has one of the best places to start – w w w. r e a d y r a t i n g . c o m is a resource that allows owners to establish just how ready for a disaster they are, and where they should start planning. For those looking for someone to help walk them through the process and point them in the right direction, that’s where the partnership comes in. At www.preparemybusiness.
org, interested parties will be able to view past webinars, collect general facts and information, and download documents to help in disaster planning. The plans aren’t just good for preparing for the major disasters like the one that devastated so many local businesses. It’s also about preparing for the little things – it’s preparing for a malfunctioning sprinkler system that does some damage, it’s about preparing for a broken window that destroys merchandise, and it’s about making sure assets and data are preserved. Small businesses are the backbone of the community, and making sure they’re up and running as soon as possible instead of closing their doors forever means a stronger community overall.

Black Friday shopping makes for interesting crowd
Being the shopoholic I am, every year it is mandatory that I go out for Black Friday. It’s been somewhat of a controversial topic that many stores chose to be open for Thanksgiving, but I decided to venture out on Thursday anyway. The first place I went to was the Walmart in Hamburg. I didn’t really have anything specific in mind I was shopping for. A friend and I mainly wanted to go for people watching purposes. And what better place to people watch than Walmart? The parking lot was an ab-
solute zoo, indicating that the vast majority of local people didn’t mind the stores being open on the holiday. Somehow we managed to get lucky and found a spot right up front. However, only one entrance was open, and it was on the complete opposite side of where we parked. At the entrance, we found metal barriers lined up as if we were at Darien Lake waiting to ride the Superman. When we got into the store, it was a madhouse. Everyone was in a hurry. My friend and I decided to check out the cheap DVDs
to see if there was anything good. We went to the home and garden section where we were immediately were placed in a line seemingly a mile long. After several minutes in line, my friend turns to me and whispers, “Do you smell weed?” I sniff, and I vaguely notice it as well, shrugging my shoulders and nodding to the three guys in front of us. A minute later, a woman comes storming into line behind us. She immediately goes on a profanity laced tirade that I
would most definitely be fired for printing. From what I could understand, she was upset that an employee told her to wait in the wrong line for the last hour and now she might not get the $30 copy of Grand Theft Auto V for her son. My friend and I nod our heads sympathetically to her. It’s at that point that I notice the smell of weed has gotten significantly stronger. I turn around to see what the guys in front of us were doing, and lo and behold, they are smoking a blunt in the middle of Walmart.
I nudge my friend in amused disbelief to point it out, and I regret it as he is absolutely horrified. The woman behind us is still going off about being in the wrong line, now threatening to “put her size 8 boot in that employee’s”...rear. She also alludes to shanking people to get her hands on the game. The guys continue to light up for the next 15 minutes we’re in line while the angry woman continues to rant. I can’t help but smile at the stark contrast between the people who surround us.
When we get to the DVD/ video game display, the woman almost seems disappointed that Walmart still has many copies of the game. Now, her boot will only be used for walking. After browsing the DVDs and a few other departments, we waited in the checkout line with our finds for an additional 45 minutes. While the trip was a long one, I don’t regret going out on Thanksgiving, and I will likely continue to do so for the near future. I mean, who knows what I might see next year?

Cheektowaga author promoting new book By Debra Kelly
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
For Cheektowaga native and Buffalo State professor Lou Rera, writing is simply something that he’s always done. For him, it started in the 1970s when he was writing music for his band, Flyer. From there, he began to branch out into short stories; after the slew of rejections that he says he expected, he began to not only get published but to win awards for his work. Now, he’s taking a sabbatical from his day job as an Associate Professor in Communication to promote his new book, SIGN. “I had the idea for SIGN over 6 or 7 years ago, and I knew I couldn’t tell this story in the short form,” says Rera. “I decided to write SIGN as a novel. It was quite a leap in the process going from a few thousands words to seventy thousand.” SIGN is a dark, supernatural tale of one man, his wife, his affair and a murder. Throw in a little bit of the mysterious and the paranormal, and Rera had an incredibly complex story with layers
Lou Rera upon layers. “SIGN is really a classic crime thriller, with a supernatural twist,” he says. The entire process of writing an editing has taken him five years; over the years, he’s had the opportunity to go deeper into the writing process than he had ever done
before with music. It’s a different kind of creative process, he says, one that’s very, very solitary. Rera found himself writing through the night many times, and the solitary process of writing was one that was very, very welcome. It wasn’t enough just to be able to write in the quiet of his own home,
though, as there were still too many distractions and too much going on – the creation of SIGN was much more demanding. “I went back to a process I had adopted early in my short fiction writing,” Rera says. “I would pack up my car with my computer, printer, reference books, research book and novels

quite literally, a journey for Rera. In addition to the physical journey that was required for him to write the book as he knew it needed to be told, there was also the journey of discovering himself on the page. “Those who know me, my wife in particular, couldn’t get past the idea that the main character, Jim, was based on me. It’s a totally fictional account of this man’s life and personality, but to be fair, I guess it’s impossible not to have your own voice and attitudes end up on the page on some level. In that sense, since I am so private, to have that perception exist was unsettling in some ways.” Rera will be at the Julia Boyer Reinstein Library at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, to discuss his new book. Along with the process of writing, he’ll be talking about all the challenges that face writers in today’s demanding markets, along with the value of using tools like social media. of similar genre to study and I hit the road for a couple of weeks. Since I’m off summers, I could dedicate time to the project, and never once did I have a destination in mind.” So he headed out into small-town America, going wherever the road took him. Once it was Nashville, and another time, it was New Brunswick. He traveled back roads and narrow highways, with no endless monotony of the interstates or highways. Eventually, he had a story, one that was clearly inspired by a number of the authors who he’d always read and looked up to – Stephen King, Peter Straub, Kurt Vonnegut. More difficult than writing, even, was editing – and hitting delete. Thousands of words that he had written of back story and development, he knew he had to get rid of; so began the process of re-writing, removing, perfecting. The final edit was done in the same spirit of adventure that had taken him around the country writing – the last time looking through his manuscript before publishing was done at a cafe in Florence, Italy. 2014-15 Wrestling Preview Cheektowaga grapplers set to enter new era without Rodriguez-Spencer By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
It’s time to turn the page for the Cheektowaga Central High School wrestling program. The Warriors move on following the graduation of Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer, Central’s all-time wins leader and one of the greatest wrestlers the storied program has ever known. A state and national champion during his time in Cheektowaga and a current wrestler at Iowa State University, Rodriguez-Spencer will be sorely missed. But the Warriors have no intentions in letting the program’s success level slip. “He’s been the face of our program for years,” 11th-year varsity head coach Matt Haberl said. “Obviously when you lose a national champions ... those guys don’t come along every day. His influence is still in the room as far as kids wrestling certain styles. And
JEFFREY T. BARNES
The Warriors will lean on a committee of young wrestlers after graduating high-end talent from last season’s team. we have a big team, a good young team and we’re still going to compete.” Cheektowaga has one returning class place-winner in Eric Bartnik, who took second in Class B last season. He’ll anchor the middle of the lineup this season for Cheektowaga. The Warriors also welcome
Katrell Jackson to the lineup. He moved to Cheektowaga after placing third at 152 pounds in the Class C tournament for Newfane. Jeff Chrostowski (113-20), Isaiah Johnson (108-113) and Joe Fronczak (136) also return for Cheektowaga and Haberl said, “we’re looking forward to
them to do great things for us.” Adam Kassem (170) is also back after missing his junior season with a broken leg suffered playing football. The Warriors’ lone senior is heavyweight Ian Wittmer. It’s a nice group this year,” Haberl said. “They show up on time, actually they show
up early, they show up ready to work. It’ll be a nice year to learn.” Haberl has been the Warriors’ head coach since 2004, winning 109 dual matches in that span. He has coached seven of the 10 winningest wrestlers in the program’s strong history. Yet, in a way, it’s a lot like his rookie year this year. “We’ll send a competitive lineup out there and the rest is up to the boys,” Haberl said. “It seems a lot like my first year when I took over at Cheektowaga; my first year we were 4-7 and then the next three years we were champions. This is kind of like that team, we’re young but we’re showing up with enthusiasm. You put those two things together, you can do a lot of damage.” The concept of building for the future may be the same, but Cheektowaga has no intentions on a losing season. And they seem to have the tools to be competitive in the always-
strong ECIC II . “We should be OK, we’re just a young team. They need to just keep doing what they’re doing. Welch returns to Warriors after short stint at Canisius By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
The Cheektowaga Central boys basketball team’s strong group of returnees got even stronger shortly before the season. Dominick Welch, who earned all-state honors as a freshman for the Warriors last season, returned to Cheektowaga shortly before the season after transferring to Canisius High School to start the
school year. Welch didn’t give a reason for his change of heart, simply saying, “I’m just happy to be back, that’s all.” Welch made the announcement on social media on Nov. 25 and his teammates are sure glad to have him back on board. “He just came back to us a couple days ago and we were all really excited about that,” senior guard Zak Ciezki said at a practice the day before
Thanksgiving. “It’s great to have Dom back.” We l c h a v e r a g e d 1 9 points per game last season and earned 10th team NYSSWA all-state honors, the highest ranking freshman on the list. Over the summer, he announced his decision to transfer to Canisius for his sophomore season. But shortly before the campaign tipped off, the Warriors got a mostwelcomed addition to an already stacked lineup.
“We’ll welcome him back,” Central coach Patrick Cullinan said. “It’s a good fit for him here, we know that and we’re looking forward to what he can do for us.” What he can do is plenty. Welch also earned ECIC IV and All-Western New York honors as well as his all-state status. And it’s scary, but he wants to be even better as a sophomore. “I want to do a lot more than I did last year,” he
said. “I’m working harder just like everybody else and we want to keep getting better.” We l c h ’s g o a l s a r e pretty simple: win. Cheektowaga won the Class A-2 championship last season, edging rival Amherst in a Section VI championship game thriller. The Warriors’ season ended with a Class B loss to defending state champ McKinley but in that game, Welch threw down a dunk that had all
Western New York high school basketball followers buzzing. The team success in a motivation for all the Warriors and in his return to Cheektowaga, Welch wants to see that continue. “I’m just trying reach the goal of winning another sectional title and having another good s e a s o n , ” We l c h s a i d . “Last year gave us a lot of motivation and we know we can do it again.”

Reinstein friends new and old HGTV highlights Chautauqua Lake to celebrate the holidays By Debra Kelly
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
On Saturday, Dec. 6, the Friends of Reinstein Woods will gather to celebrate the holidays at their annual Holiday Party. There are few settings that will do a better job of getting you in the holiday spirit than the snowcovered trees that surround the nature center; along with the decorated tree inside, the story-telling, the fun and games, and, perhaps most of all, the knowledge that everyone there is a supporter of one of Western New York’s hidden treasures. “The partnership between the DEC and the Friends of Reinstein Woods enables us to offer highquality, environmental educations programs to the community all year,” says Meaghan Boice-Green, Center Director of Reinstein Woods. “The Friends are particularly important for providing winter recreation opportunities, especially snowshoe and ski programs.”
With some of the programs that are offered at the nature center – thanks, in large part, to their supporters – the winter might not be any shorter, but it is quite a bit more bearable. With Reinstein Woods right around the corner, there’s no reason to be stuck inside on a sunny winter’s day – instead, there’s the chance to head out to experience any one of their numerous programs. The Friends are in large part responsible for allowing programming like Weathering the Winter; at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13 they’ll be putting on a guided walk and explaining how area animals make it through the long winter months. There’s also several snowshoe walks coming up. At 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, there’s the Solstice Snowshoe Walk, where visitors can learn all about the solstice. (Registration is required; call 683-5959.) And at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30 there’s another snowshoe walk,
where guides will point out the signs of all the animals that are still out and about during the cold winter months. (There is a snowshoe rental fee of $5 per person and $2 per person for Friends members.) The Holiday Party is just one great reminder of the special benefits that the Friends of Reinstein Woods enjoy. There are a series of members-only programs, voting rights when it comes to the annual membership meeting, and discounts on programs not only at Reinstein Woods, but at other nature centers across the country. And, of course, the best benefits are the ones that help others. “There really is nothing quite like seeing a young child try snowshoes for the first time, and that wouldn’t be possible without the Friends of Reinstein Woods,” says Boice-Green. For more information about the Friends and how to join, visit reinsteinwoods.org or call 683-5959.
The crew from the popular HGTV Network program “House Hunters” recently completed an episode in the Chautauqua Lake region. Local real estate company Century 21 Turner Brokers worked with the production crew on the episode. Pie Town Productions, the company that produces “House Hunters,” sent a crew of three people to videotape the home buyers and their broker. Michelle Turner, with Century 21 Turner Brokers, worked with the production company for several months to find dynamic house hunters, with an interesting list of criteria for a house. She says she had to provide the production company with information about the home market in the Chautauqua region: the budget specifications of the house hunting buyers, the competitiveness in the area, the challenges of buying a home here and details of the different neighborhoods they were considering. But mostly the show wanted details about the Chautauqua Lake region.
“This is the exciting part,” Turner said. “The exposure this show will bring to Chautauqua County cannot be measured in dollars. ‘House Hunters’ wanted to know as much as possible. What makes it a great place to live, what are people’s favorite activities, what draws people to our area.” The three-person crew, consisting of a field producer, a sound engineer and a videographer, along with Turner and the homebuyers in tow, spent several non-stop days taping the show. The house-hunting couple was videotaped looking at several houses. “Working with them was a lot of fun, but also a lot of long days being on your feet,” Turner said. “It took a lot of energy and patience at the same time.” The crew also taped the buyers at several local establishments. Turner says in the end over 30 hours of footage was videotaped, which will result in the half-hour show that is viewed on the HGTV Network. The crew recently returned to videotape around the lake and coun-
ty to highlight the region at its prettiest so they can include it in the episode. It is expected to air on HGTV sometime in the fall/winter season. Pie Town Productions contacted Turner Brokers about a year and a half ago, saying they were interested in producing a show around Chautauqua Lake. The producers wanted to find energetic outgoing buyers that were in the market to buy a home in the area. The challenge for Turner Brokers was whether their clients would successfully navigate the rigorous casting process and obtain approval to be featured in an episode. It took several submissions before they were successful. “House Hunters” is the No. 1 show on the HGTV Network and is distributed to 98 million U.S. households. Episodes of “House Hunters” have multiple airings over several years. All of this means that Chautauqua County will receive an incalculable amount of free national publicity for the next several years.
Be prepared and stay safe during winter driving months Every start to the winter season, you promise yourself that this year will be different, that you’ll be ready for whatever blizzard Mother Nature sends us. We all know that winter driving can be a test for even expert drivers and you need to be prepared at all times. Before the storm hits, take a moment to review a few simple winter driving tips and double-check that you have the proper emergency gear in your vehicle to en-
sure your safety. Not all drivers are prepared for winter driving conditions, so take it slow when driving on snowy or icy roadways. Drive as the environment warrants, stay alert and reduce your speed. Due to poor visibility and/ or bad road conditions, always leave plenty of room between cars. Brake early and slowly giving yourself time to stop and react safely. Keep a full tank of gas
along with gas in your vehicle at all times. Before pulling onto the road, be sure to completely clear snow and ice from your car windows, mirrors, lights, hood and roof. Don’t use cruise control in inclement weather as the slightest touch of your brakes to deactivate can cause loss of vehicle control. Take extra precaution when entering and exiting ramps and bridges as they can be extremely slippery.
While four-wheel drive vehicles may help you get going quicker, they won’t help you stop any quicker – don’t get overconfident when driving one. Make sure your car is properly maintained – the better shape your car is in, the safer you are on the road. Have your battery and ignition system checked, along with your brakes, transmission and tires. All fluids in your vehicle should be checked and topped off:
de-icing washer fluid, oil, power steering and antifreeze. Change or adjust spark plugs, air, fuel and emission filters. Check your headlights, brake and taillights, blinkers and emergency flashers. If you ever get stuck in the winter season, be prepared by keeping these emergency items handy in your vehicle: a spare tire, wheel wrench, jack, shovel, jumper cables, tow and tire chains, salt or cat lit-
ter, working flashlight with extra batteries, bright cloth, first aid kit, ice scraper and snow brush. Extra clothing such as gloves, socks and hats, a blanket, a 12-volt charger for a cell phone, as well as non-perishable foods and bottles of water or juice are vital should you become stranded. Being prepared is the best offense against winter driving. Take it slow, be safe and buckle up.
