Holiday wish list not just for kids Mike Haim
SPORTS COLUMNIST
At this time of year, in a variety of locations from coast to coast, kids are lining up to have a chat with Santa Claus and relay what’s on their Christmas wish list. But why limit it to the kids? I’ve long have been alarmed at the number of school-age kids who no longer visit with Santa, thinking they’re too cool to be part of a time-honored tradition. I was personally horrified years ago when my own son, perhaps around age seven, seemed to be the oldest kid in line. So in the spirit of the season, I’m taking the tradition back and have made a sports-related list of things I’d tell Santa I’d want this Christmas: First, I’d like to see one of our local college basketball teams pull off an upset of a nationally-renowned program. UB almost did it against top-ranked Kentucky a few weeks ago and will have another kick at a highly-regarded opponent when they travel to Wisconsin for a Dec. 28 game. St. Bonaventure took Pitt down to the wire this past Saturday, nearly ending the Panthers’ 25-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents. There are a wealth of stories about some upstart program recording a significant victory against a powerhouse, so why can’t we enjoy that kind of moment for a change? Next, I’d like to have some sort of personal epiphany which leads me to either love or loathe UB’s mission to become identified as “New York.” I’m still ambivalent about the idea, since I think the state needs a true representative on the national athletic stages but I also don’t want to see the university’s civic identity get compromised. I tend to think that most universities with a state moniker are located in smaller communities (think Michigan and Ann Arbor, Missouri and Columbia, Kentucky and Lexington, etc.), so it doesn’t make sense for Buffalo to make itself seem smaller. But the idea of having New York City-based alumni become a force in fund-raising and awareness is irresistible. At some point I’d like there to be an overwhelming reason to commit to an opinion either way.

Lady Jack bowlers among NFL’s youngest By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER
With multiple NFL titles in recent seasons, the North To n a w a n d a L a d y J a c k s bowling team has become
accustomed to sitting at or near the top of the standings. To be in the middle of the pack, even early on, is not common place for the NT ladies. But they know that going 2-2 and being in a four-way tie with Lockport, Kenmore West and Grand Island after four matches means they just have to work a little bit harder this season. With just two seniors, no juniors and the rest of the team ranging from seventh to 10th

They are all back. Every single starter who experienced a strong 2013-14 with the North Tonawanda boys bowling team is back. Perhaps more importantly, every single person back knows the sting of finishing in second place behind rival NiagaraWheatfield in the battle for the league title. But while that sting of falling short will drive the Jacks, the question is ‘will it be enough?’
“I think it’s gonna be more of a motivator,” said senior Kyle Behr. “Because they lost a lot of people from last year so we know we have that upper (hand) on them and we can beat them.” Behr, who will be in the hunt for the Niagara Frontier League’s Triple Crown of high game, series and average, quipped that after three years of losing to the Falcons, they don’t like Wheatfield very much. So this is the year to get some retribution. Behr had a strong start last season, but midway through his numbers mysteriously and dramatically began to dip. It wasn’t until early this season that NT coach Bill Rohring and Behr revealed that for the second year in a row, Behr had injured his wrist while snowboarding.

is on the line. Rohring is using positive reinforcement to remind the girls that learning to win is a step-by-step process and they have to be patient. “I just want them to have fun,” said Rohring. “And if they have fun the wins will come along with them.” The graduation of Cassidy Powers has left a big void in the North Tonawanda lineup. But they still have a core of skilled girls to hang their hopes on as
they move forward in 2014-15. Tri-captains Bridgette Enright (senior), Jessica Sass (sophomore) and freshman stud Haylee Sutton, who leads the team with a 172 average, will lead the Ladyjacks this season. “All three of them are the team leaders now,” said Rohring.

Behr is off to another strong start as he is sporting the league’s best average of 229 and second-best high series, a 737 on Dec. 4 at Manor Lanes against Kenmore West. “He should be the top dog in the league,” said Rohring. “He looks like he is prepared to take that role.”

Spartan rollers more experienced entering 2nd season By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
Last year, Starpoint fielded a bowling team for the first time in school history. That season was met with success and the Spartans are hoping to continue that this year as the squad’s numbers are about the same as they were the year before and interest in the sport seems to be trending up within the school. The roster consists of 14 girls and 10 boys, which in total is around the same as a season
ago, but there were a higher number of boys. Starpoint practices and plays each match at Brad Angelo’s South Transit Lanes in Lockport, which has been a big convenience both financially and because they have been able to use the teaching tools and experience of the owner. “Brad [Angelo] has a ton of teaching tools in his pro shop,” said Starpoint head coach Christopher Prezioso. “He really helped me out last year with being able to work with the kids and it’s a unique sport because it’s the kids against the pins. There are people who are beginners and kids that are averaging 185 so I try to focus individually on what their needs are because it’s such a wide range. Some of them need the real basic
tools and others just need some adjustment with their speed and marks because they are advanced.” Last year, Starpoint had Samantha Rabatin, who consistently bowled over 185, but this year, there is a lot of consistency across the board on the girls side. Junior Kymberlin Enright projects to be one of the top bowlers on this season’s Spartan team. She believes that she has some improving to do as the season goes along, but her experience in bowling over the years and her calmness under pressure should help her. “I feel like I’m not improving as well this year,” said Enright. “I just need to slow down. I’m rushing a lot. I like the pressure though. I don’t mind it.” Junior Amanda Klamut and
senior Lexi Peters also project to be in the top four for each match for Starpoint regularly, while senior Megan Smith has shown a great deal of improvement from last year to jump up into that top four grouping. The boys have gotten a boost from a former basketball player, Alex Lubner, who decided to try his hand at bowling after injuries derailed his career on the hardwood. Lubner has bowled since he was a child, but the idea of playing a more organized form of bowling intrigued him and he should be one of the key members of the team this year. “I started around 6,” said Lubner. “I bowled with my mom in an adult-child league for years and I decided that after bowling for so many
years to try a more organized approach towards the game.” Bowling is a bit more individualized than basketball is, and that is something that Lubner has been adjusting to. While basketball is a complete team game, bowling has a team aspect, but is more about the player against the pins than anything else. “The biggest difference is while it’s a team sport, it’s more oriented around perfecting your own game than it is working with a team,” said Lubner. “You have to find what you are doing wrong and just work individually and take it step-by-step. If I have a bad approach, I’ll work on that for a day and make myself the best I can be at each aspect of the game.” Lubner will be joined by
fellow senior Eric Facklam, junior Drake Matthews and freshman Brett Steuer in the top four of most games for Starpoint. Aaron Stabler could crack that top four by the end of the season as well. Steuer may have had the biggest improvement from last year, due in large part to his love for bowling, which he does five to six times per week. “Probably the biggest improvement for the boys has been Brett Steuer from eighth grade to ninth grade,” said Prezioso. “The kid just loves bowling. He bowls five to six times per week. His dad constantly brings him. He has probably made the biggest jump.” Starpoint will have its next match Jan. 5 against Williamsville East.
Coach can’t question girls’ enthusiasm Looking to reflect more on impact of sports
“Lady Rollers” from page B1 Rohring said the plus of this team is their bubbly, positive attitude and the way they have meshed, which leads him to believe that they will naturally motivate each other. So the onus of setting the tone won’t always have to fall on the shoulders of the same girl every day. Still, though, the captains know full well that it is up to them to set the example for this young team, which includes three eighth graders and a seventh grader. “They just need to take their time,” said Enright, “and bowl good.” While learning to win is a process, Rohring said the things that the girls can control, like effort and attitude, have been sparkling. “The enthusiasm is unbelievable,” he said. “They are so enthusiastic. They love to bowl.” Jordan Johnson, Susan Tooke, Ashley Dixon, Katie Scozzafava, Maria Davis and Samantha Michlin complete the lineup.

Sophomore Jessica Sass will also serve as a captain for the Lady Jacks.
Next, I’d like to see fewer kids get saddled with terminal illnesses. While this doesn’t appear to be a sports-related wish, it becomes one when I see what seems to be a constant parade of teams and individual stars offering wonderful, heartwarming experiences to children who have been dealt a devastating prognosis. Bad news is a fact of life, and organizations such as “Make a Wish” have tried to make tragic journeys more palatable, but I’d like to see a day when this sort of outreach isn’t necessary. Next, as someone who’s been involved in “behind the scenes” aspects of sports for over 30 years, I’d like to reflect more often on how lucky I’ve been to be part of the local sports scene.
There are times when I’ll walk into a venue or leave an event and get that chill down my spine and remind myself about how many other people would love to be in my shoes. But those feelings always seem to pale in comparison to how I felt when I was a kid, getting my formative tastes of sporting events and feeling like nothing in the world mattered like that day’s game. Age may somewhat dull the senses, but I’d love to recapture the innocence of my youth and suspend worry about “real world” issues. It’s kind of like the holiday season itself: may we all tap into the wonder of it like we’re kids again. www.twitter.com/mikehaim
Falcons focus on details with Will North showdown looming
By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
The last time the NiagaraWheatfield and Williamsville North hockey Federation hockey teams squared off, it was for the ClassAASection VI Championship at First Niagara Center. Last March’s title tilt, which was won by the Falcons, may seem like a long time ago for both squads, as neither has gotten off to the start that they had envisioned. Each look to right the ship on Sunday night (Dec. 21) at the Northtown Center in Amherst.
Niagara-Wheatfield began the season losing two of its first three games, but a victory over the Spartans could get it back on track as it heads into the holiday break, that is if the Falcons can do the little things to win the game. “They are always a very good team, they are always very well-coached,” said NiagaraWheatfield head coach Rick Wrazin. “We have to learn to put some pucks in the net. We did it in the first game and only two in the last two games. We have scored two in six periods and that’s just not enough, so against Will North we have to do the little things that it takes to win a hockey game. “There are things in our game plan that we didn’t come close to doing. We have a skilled group of kids and they have been able to get by on that, but against a good team that’s disciplined and well-coached likeWill North, we
are going to have to figure out how to do the little things right.” The Falcons started the season with a 7-1 win over Lancaster before falling to St. Joe’s in a nonleague matchup and to Frontier in a devastating overtime loss. That’s something unusual for Niagara-Wheatfield, which has won three straight sectional championships. The small details have been lacking. Against Frontier, the Falcons dominated puck possession, which has been a program trait over the years, but Wrazin would like them begin to move the puck around in the offensive zone before tossing it at the net. “Our transition has to be much better in the neutral zone,” said Wrazin. “I think we need to cycle pucks much better. That’s something we have traditionally been very good at and we have had one line do it consistently this year, so that’s just something that
The Falcons have also usually been on the winning side in terms of shots on goal, so they have something to lean on with the play of defensemen like James Stenzel and Matt Canada. “I think we have been pretty strong defensively,” saidWrazin. “We haven’t given up a ton of shots. Junior Dillon Snopkowski, who holds a 190.64 average, is another key returner for the Lumberjacks. Senior Rob Johnson is off to a quality start with a 174 average in his first season. Antonio LaBarbera (188), freshman Nick Cook (172) and sophomore Hunter Bolam (183) are off
to strong starts. But if the Jacks want to raise a championship banner, they must make a statement now. Going into their fifth match, they were a respectable 2-2, but still a game back of the four-way tie for first place involving Niagara Falls, Kenmore East, Niagara-Wheatfield and Lewiston-Porter.
“Right now they are gelling a little slowly,” Rohring confessed. “I don’t know what it is. They’re really not gelling. Kyle is the only one is who is really bowling. I brought one of the subs up, Jarod Powers, one of the ninth graders and he’s been solid for two matches in a row.”

FROM the SIDELINES A time of the year for giving: Bills distribute gifts, wins By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR
Buffalo Bills long snapper Garrison Sanborn fondly remembers what it was like to be a kid during the holidays. “I was a kid once,” Sanborn began. “It’s a blast to get gifts.” That’s why Sanborn decided to give a few of his own recently. Sanborn, a sixth-year NFL veteran, was one of a host of Buffalo players to participate in the Bills Toyota Rookie Club’s annual holiday party for children on Tuesday, Dec. 9, inside a winter wonderlandthemed Jim Kelly Club at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Over 100 children from 10 local organizations were invited to attend the event. Children from each organization submitted a holiday wish list before the party, and Bills players — Sanborn included — distributed bags full of gifts to everyone of them. Sanborn, who’s taken part in the event since his rookie year, said seeing how excited the kids were made participating more than worth his while. “There’s nothing like it, seeing kids happy,” Sanborn said. “It’s just a regular day to try and bring a smile to their face, and that’s why we’re here. I know I’ll keep coming as long as I’m [in Buffalo].” And Sanborn wasn’t alone. Bills running back C.J. Spiller, who has also taken part in the event since his first NFL season in 2010, was also in attendance and agreed that making

So for us to be able to be put on a platform and be able to give back to the community, it means a lot, but most important, it means more to the kids, just to see them smiling.” Smiles turned into super duper smiles during the latter stages of the gift-giving. Rally Niagara Badminton offers alternative athletics By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
It may not be a current mainstream sport, but badminton certainly has a following and players are as dedicated as any athlete in any sport. The fact that badminton is not quite as prevalent as football or basketballistheexactreasonwhy Rally Niagara Badminton Club was founded. Mike and Cara Hacker have enjoyed playing the sport for years and they wanted to find a way for their children to play competitively. The result? Founding Rally Niagara in 2011. “My wife and I really enjoyed playing badminton,” said Mike Hacker. “We loved playing with our kids in the backyard, but there is not an outlet for the kids to play. For instance, through Ken-Ton Community Education, they won’t allow kids to play, it’s just adults. So we said, ‘let’s start our own badminton club and we can work with the kids and any other kids interested.’” The club started in March 2011 with only a handful of kids, including the Hackers’four sons, Daniel, David, Jonathan and Joshua. Now, the club consists of 38 kids ranging in age from 5 to 17. Members meet for a few hours on Sunday afternoons at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda. Rally Niagara also hosts singles and doubles tournaments that are open to the public, which brings in kids from schools such as Mount St. Mary, Sacred Heart, Rochester and even some from Canada.Thosetournamentshave
netted as many as 65 participants. Growth in any club or business is essential in staying afloat, and one of the biggest ways that Rally Niagara has grown is through word of mouth. “The best advertisement is word of mouth,” said Hacker. “Once people find out this is a great program, they enjoy playing badminton, then their kids come with them. After a lot of the kids’ classes, we have found it very successful to have the parents bring their sneakers and they can play their kids afterwards. We advertise at a lot of schools and open houses around the area.” If you go to a Rally Niagara class on a Sunday afternoon, your kids will be taught by six regular instructors that have played and beenaroundbadmintonforyears. Hacker is joined by Zhengrong “Ziggy” Xu, who has been involved in club play in Canada since 2008, as the basic youth instructor. Hetram Sookdeo began playing badminton in Guyana, South America as a teenager and even won the country’s U16 tournament. Christina Malyn Gossett began playing after watching her father play in the National Senior Games Association Badminton championships and fell in love with the sport. Together they are the intermediate youth instructors. NavinAgrawal is the advanced youth instructor, and he has played competitively for over 15 years after overcoming physical obstacles as a teenager. The high performance instructor is Alex Sung, who began playing badminton with his siblings in the backyard. “We also have a network of
about four others that help fill in if somebody is missing, so we have a lot of dedicated volunteers that have a lot of passion for badminton,” Hacker said. “All of the volunteers and coaches are all good badminton players. They play in local tournaments and they are very experienced. We are lucky to have them.” Many of the kids that are members of Rally Niagara have taken the skills taught to them to play in tournaments nearToronto, which is a hotbed for badminton. Finding a place to play can always be difficult for a budding club, but that has not been the case for Rally Niagara, since the Hackers have had a longstanding relationship with St. Matthew’s. “My son went to this school,” said Hacker. “We have been really blessed, we have a great relationship with St. Matthew’s and they blessed us with a gym about four years ago. Sunday is a great day because there is not a lot of conflict. It’s just a great relationship that we have here.” One thing that the Hackers would like to continue to do is to spread the word about the sport of badminton and to show how great of a sport that it can be. “That’s what the success is all about — having the kids have fun, have goals to shoot for such as the tournaments, that’s the kind of thing we want to continue to share with the kids.” Rally Niagara finished part of its season on Dec. 14 with a doubles tournament, but it will resume instruction in January. Fees for open badminton are $3 for children and $5 for adults, while the cost for youth instruction is $35 per session.
one, a group of Bills players emerged from another room riding bicycles. And the child-sized bikes certainly weren’t for 6-foot-4, 310-pound center Eric Wood or 6-foot-5, 343-pound guard Cyril Richardson. They were for the kids, an announcement that drew both laughter and applause from party-goers. “It was great to see,” Sanborn said. Throughout the evening, children got a chance to dine and engage in conversation with Bills players. Rookie cornerback Ross Cockrell noted that was his favorite part of the evening. “Just sitting down and get-
ting a chance to talk with some of the kids about what they go through every day, going to school, what their favorite subjects are and stuff like that,” Cockrell said. “That was the best part about it. “It’s gratifying. Any chance you get to hand out smiles and happiness, it’s going to be a good time.” •• The Bills undoubtedly handed out plenty of smiles and happiness for fans Sunday when they knocked off the Green Bay Packers, 2113, in an upset win that secured the team its first nonlosing season since 2004.
At 8-6, Buffalo can finish no worse than 8-8. It last had a non-losing record in 2004, when Drew Bledsoe was still under center and Mike Mularkey was calling the shots as head coach. The Bills’ secondary shined against the Packers, holding likely MVP Aaron Rodgers to no touchdowns and two interceptions for the first time in his illustrious career. Recent addition Bacarri Rambo had both picks. While the Bills were victorious, their offense struggled mightily and didn’t find the end zone once. Marcus Thigpen returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown, Dan Carpenter tacked on four field goals, and Mario Williams had a late-game strip-sack of Rodgers that resulted in a safety to round out the team’s scoring. “We have a great defense. We know that those guys are going to make plays for us and we’ve got to take advantage of them,” running back Fred Jackson said. “We didn’t get in the end zone, which is something you need to do to win games, but as long as our defense keeps us in the game like that and keeps making plays, we have an opportunity to win.” Buffalo will take its staunch defense on the road Sunday when it visits Oakland (2-12). The Raiders are coming off a 31-13 loss to Kansas City but have won two of their last four games, including a Week 13 win over San Francisco. Kickoff is slated for 4:25 p.m. The game will be broadcast on CBS.
Softball Central is all softball, all the time By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
Even during down times in life, Kevin Hufford always had softball in his life. Back on his feet now, the Cheektowaga resident is looking to make the sport an even bigger part of his daily routine. Hufford and his wife, Melissa, launched Softball Central, located at 3223 Broadway St. in Cheektowaga, last week. The indoor facility is focused strictly on softball. Softball has kept us going for an awful long time,” Kevin Hufford said. “We’re always been doing softball anyway. They say if you do what you love, you never have to go to work. I hope to come here every day.” Hufford has always been involved in softball. He started coaching at Cheektowaga Southside softball in 2001 and combined with his wife as well as Beth O’Brien to rebuild the Cheektowaga Crabapple travel team. He’s also been an assistant coach at Medaille College, Hutch-Tech High School and currently Erie County Community College. But his life changed on Aug. 28, 2009 when he was seriously injured after being hit by a truck while paving city streets. Unable to work and battling multiple back surgeries, Hufford also had time to dream. “The thought of being able to possibly open this thing up while we were coaching all these kids kind of kept us going,” said Hufford, who

There will be batting lessons, pitching lessons and a place for girls to stay sharp when the snow is falling. It’s all softball. “It’s just going to be softball,” Hufford said. “There’s plenty of places people can go and get all the baseball they want inside. We’re hoping if we just focus on softball. Hopefully we can be a little less expensive and a lot more focused and it will all work out.” Hufford said he will offer some free time at the facility to JFK, Cleveland Hill, Maryvale and Cheektowaga Central. And of course St. Mary’s of Lancaster, where his daughter Erin is a sophomore and one of the elite
softball players in Western New York. A member of the Gold Coast Hurricanes out of Florida as well as the local New Era Diamond Girls, Erin has a goal of playing collegiately for the University of Tennessee. “She’s almost more talented than we can afford her to be right now,” Kevin Hufford said with a laugh. But that’s ultimately the goal for Softball Central, to help local players grow towards big dreams. Hufford expects players from Niagara Falls to Hamburg to Clarence will be at the facility for individual lessons. Now that it’s up and running, it’s expected to grow stronger and stronger for years to come. “If it makes a dollar more than it costs, it’ll be here forever,” Hufford said. “I’ll just have to get a job. If I can make a living doing this, that would be all the better.”

high-poverty zip codes of Buffalo. Children birth through 5 years old will be the focus of outreach and education. When speaking about the implementation of the grant, CCRN CEO Lynn Pullano said, “More than 65 percent of young children in Buffalo live in poverty. They are often at risk for dental problems that can interfere with eating, speaking and learning—making it even more difficult for them to succeed in school and later in life. We’re grateful that the foundation recognizes how essential early dental health is to long-term wellbeing.”
Since 1987, Child Care Resource Network has advocated for quality child care and education for all children. CCRN is a nonprofit organization providing child care referral services and resources for families, child care provider registration and licensure, continuing education for child care providers and nutrition resources for child care providers. Its mission is to support families, child care providers, employers and the community by developing and advocating for high quality, accessible and affordable child care and education for all children.

Show your support by ‘Caroling for Canines’ By Sallie Moppert
THE LANCASTER SUN CORRESPONDENT
As the holidays creep closer, the radio stations are filled with Christmas carols. Local business Canine & Company will be joining into the caroling fun with a unique twist on the holiday tradition that carolers, singers and animal lovers alike will enjoy. The business will be Caroling for Canines from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 at the Tops Market located at 6363 Transit Road in Depew. The annual caroling event will not only serve as a fun way to spread holiday cheer and have some fun during the holiday season, but will also be a way to collect donations for local rescue organizations that are in need. “We were looking for a fun holiday way to raise money and collect donations for local rescue organizations,” explained Canine & Company Manager Colleen Donovan.
This is the fourth year that Caroling for Canines has been held. Each year, Canine & Company also collects donations and items during the event which will be given to a local rescue organization that helps animals in need. This year, the money and items that are donated during the event will be going to the Akron Canine Rescued Angels organization. Canine & Company is looking for donations of any kind, including items such as dog toys, beds, treats, food and other supplies for dogs, as well as monetary donations. The business is aiming to raise more money than the previous year, which achieved a total of about $300. Any and all donations will be accepted and are appreciated to assist the Akron Canine Rescued Angels organization. The public is also invited to join the Canine & Company employees in singing holiday songs. The employees will be
wearing their Santa hats to add to the festivities and holiday spirit. For those who may not want to sing with the Canine & Company crew, they are welcome to stay and watch the show as well as just offer their support for the singers and the organization in general. “Everyone is going to really enjoy our terrible singing,” Donovan joked. “It’s fun to watch us stand outside of a grocery store and sing badly. But it is a lot of fun and a great event for the holidays and also goes for a great cause to help out some of our local rescue organizations.” Canine & Company is a locally owned and operated business that offers doggy daycare, lodging and grooming. The organization is located at 5952 Transit Road in Depew. For more information, contact Canine & Company at 681-0063 or visit www.canineandcompany.com.
Dr. Gale Burstein speaks on sexual health, STD awareness By Amy Robb
THE LANCASTER SUN CORRESPONDENT
Dr. Gale Burstein, MD, MPH, FAAP, was recognized recently for her work on preventing and treating Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), as the Erie County Department of Health Commissioner. Her work specifically with adolescents has made a huge impact in the Western New York community, bringing awareness and knowledge to those just coming into adolescence with questions that need answering. As a Board Certified Adolescent Medicine Physician, Dr. Burstein feels that sexual health is just as important as any other aspect addressed with primary care providers. The majority of her work has focused on making sexual health awareness and services available in a primary care setting, starting out with a private questionnaire for adolescents coming in, to providing confidential STD treatment should it be needed. “Traditionally, pediatricians didn’t provide sexual health services, but 50 percent of high school students, especially in the city
of Buffalo, are sexually active. It’s important to provide them with services to keep them healthy,” said Dr. Burstein. Providing primary doctors with the right tools and strategies can greatly reduce teenage pregnancies and the spread of STDs. It’s better for kids to get the right information on sexual health from a trusted source like a healthcare provider, or a parent, than a peer or through a questionable media outlet. Burstein urges parents to breach the subject with their teen, even if he or she is uncomfortable talking about it. “Even if [parents] think their kids won’t want to have this conversation, they need to initiate it. Parents can be good resources and advocates for their kids, reaching out and starting a conversation, because usually kids won’t start that conversation,” remarked Dr. Burstein. It’s a good open philosophy, one that will bring parents closer with their teens, and make for a healthier community overall. In addition to making information and services available at primary care providers and asking for an
open mind from parents, Dr. Burstein also stresses that a big obstacle to overcome is the stigma surrounding sexuality. It’s not just a community problem, but more of a nationwide problem, often perpetuated by certain institutions presenting it as taboo. “We are sexual beings and that’s an important part of our lives, and we have to normalize it, normalize the conversation so we can make informed decisions, and lead a healthy life,” added Burstein. Dr. Burstein is also a clinical professor at the U n i v e r s i t y a t B u ff a l o School of Medicine and Biomedical Services, and acts as adolescent committee chair for the New York Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. For more information on sexual health and STD awareness, visit the New York State Department of Health website: health. ny.gov/diseases/communicable/std/. The Erie County Department of Health provides free, confidential screening for HIV at their walk-in Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic at 608 William St., Buffalo. Contact the clinic at 8587687 for additional information and hours.

AT&T Western New York Civic App Challenge winners announced Western New Yorkers will be able to turn to their smartphones for information on child care, thruway conditions, rental properties, landlords and other topics, thanks to creativity and innovation that emerged from the 2014 AT&T Western New York Civic App Challenge. The winners of the twomonth “virtual hackathon” were announced Dec. 4 by AT&T, along with community partners including the University at Buffalo, State University of New York at Fredonia, Z80 Labs Technology Incubator, InfoTech Niagara, Launch NY, United Way of Buffalo & Erie County, d!g Buffalo and Hack Upstate. The contest challenged local developers, entrepreneurs, designers and technologists to leverage open data to build smartphone apps that serve community needs. The competition aimed to connect and engage citizens with government and demonstrate how mobile technologies can lead to the next generation of tech jobs and investment. The winners - chosen from among 33 entries and more
than 125 participants - were announced at a ceremony at d!g Buffalo, at which developers demonstrated their winning apps: •Grand prize ($10,000): WNY Family Connection, created by Scott Falbo and Karl Newell, both from Amherst. This is an iPhone app enabling families in Western New York to find information about facilities and services that matter to them, including schools, child care, recreational sites and more. •Second place ($5,000): NY Thruway Guide, created by SUNY Fredonia and Buffalo State graduates Sarah Marcy (Amherst), Dan Wheeler (Jersey City, N.J.), Amber Marcy (Jersey City, N.J.) and Shana Marcy (Boonville). This iPhone app assists motorists traveling along New York’s thruway system by providing information on traffic alerts, cameras, rest stops and Highway Advisory Radio messages. •Third place ($3,000): Rentegrity, created by Eileen Ruberto (Buffalo), Tim Nabzdyk (North Tonawanda) and Sarah Quinta (Buffalo), is a map-based mobile app that helps renters find valuable information about
properties and their owners. The app makes it easy to identify places of interest and learn if a landlord is local, if there are recent 911 complaints to the unit or if it’s owned by a community housing group. Plus, the system links to 311 and district council members, so users can submit significant concerns directly to the city. Winners were chosen by a panel of judges made up of local tech experts, community stakeholders and elected officials, who based their decisions upon the apps’ potential impact on Western New York, execution and creativity or novelty. The three winning apps addressed the challenge to solve local problems, resulting in globally applicable solutions that will provide lasting benefits for Western New York. Challenge organizers were thrilled with the participation and submissions. “The quality of mobile apps created through the AT&T Western New York Civic App Challenge demonstrates the vibrancy and talent of Western New York’s technology and entrepreneurial community,” said Marissa Shorenstein, New York president for AT&T. “We applaud our partners at the University at Buffalo,

As a new parent I’ve realized how important it is to be able to make informed decisions about the things that impact my family, and the WNY Family Connection app does just that. Winning the AT&T WNY Civic App Challenge will help us take this app to the Web and Android phones to expand its reach to even more families in the Buffalo area.” “We’re absolutely thrilled to be chosen for this award,” Rentegrity co-creator Sarah Quintal said. “It validates THERE’S NO TIME LIKE CHRISTMAS TO LET YOU KNOW HOW MUCH WE VALUE YOUR BUSINESS AND SUPPORT!

Niagara Falls will be Dancing with the Stars By Lauren Kirchmyer ENTERTAINMENT REPORTER
The idea was simple: celebrities would pair up with a professional dancer and compete for a mirror ball trophy. As viewers tuned to ABC to watch “Dancing with the Stars,” they fell in love with the show, with the network giving the series two seasons a year. The competition series recently wrapped its 19th season, with “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” star Alfonso
Ribeiro and professional dancer Witney Carson winning the mirror ball trophy. Mid-season, it was announced the show would be hitting the road, with the first show taking place Dec. 27 at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino in Niagara Falls. “There will be a lot of dancing with your favorite pros,” shared DWTS troupe dancer Sasha Farber. “I’m happy to be part of it. I can’t wait to show everyone what we have been working on.” Joining Farber on tour are Ribeiro, Carson, Kym
Johnson, Emma Slater, Valentin Chmerkovskiy, Mark Balls and Keo Motsepe. Rehearsals began only a few days after the season finale in November, and the show will visit cities throughout the United States and Canada through Feb. 15, 2015. “The tour bus thing will be a lot of fun. We have a lot of fun together,” said Farber, who started dancing after he realized sports weren’t his forte. “There was always a huge line of girls outside of my school,” the Australia native
said. “They were taking dance class. I decided to join them when I was 14 years old as a way to meet girls.” Though he joked around a lot at first he fell in love with dance and began winning at competitions. He then joined the live show “Burn the Floor,” allowing him to perform all around the world. He was invited to be part of DWTS Australia, but left the show after a short time to go back to “Burn the Floor.” “I was still young. I wanted to see the world,” he said. “Burn the Floor” even spent
seven months on Broadway. “It was a great experience.” Farber always dreamed of being part of the American version of “Dancing with the Stars,” what he says is done on a much higher scale than the show he was part of in his home country. He joined season 13 as a troupe member and danced with reality show star Nicole “Snookie” Polizzi on season 18. He was part of the troupe again this season, and hopes to return to the show as it celebrates its decade on American television. “It’s up to the producers to
select who will be on the show and if they will be a pro or in the troupe,” Farber said. “It keeps you on your feet.” And being on the show has proved to be more than just a dream come true. “It taught me how to communicate to people and to always be positive,” he shared. “It teaches you to be a better person and to have fun with what you do.” Farber is excited to visit Niagara Falls and perform for the show’s sold-out crowd on Dec. 27. Store your mower in eight easy steps (NAPSI)—Chances are, your lawn mower has been a faithful fairweather companion. So at the end of the mowing season, you want to give it the attention it deserves. Here are some tips on what you can do now to be sure your mower will start easily next mowing season. • Make sure your operator’s manual is on hand for quick reference whenever you work on your mower
or any such equipment. • Remove the spark plug lead wire from the plug before doing any mower maintenance, and tape or tie it out of the way. • Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place away from gas cans, the water heater or furnace. • Change the oil. Old oil has lost much of its ability to coat and protect engine components, which could lead to damage down the
road. Most people avoid changing the oil in their lawn mower because they think about having to tip the mower over to drain the old oil. They worry about spills in the driveway and a mess of rags and cardboard to catch spills. Oil removal kits make the process easier and a lot less messy. For example, the Briggs & Stratton 1.6-liter oil extractor pump has a longreach hose so oil can be
extracted through filler or dipstick holes. It is important to return and recycle used oil at the proper collection center in your community. • Clean your mower. Brush or hose off leaves, grass and mud. Gently tip your walk-behind mower on its side to spray the underbody. If debris is caught on the blade, use a stick or tool to remove it—never use your hands. • Use a fuel stabilizer.
fresh for up to six months. Turn off the engine and completely fill the gas tank. A full tank will help prevent moisture from condensing in the tank, which can form rust that could break away and clog the carburetor. • Store your mower in a dry, protected place such as your garage or a garden shed. Never store it next to a furnace, water heater or appliance with a pilot light.

Never store your lawn equipment with a partially full fuel tank. Either run the equipment out of fuel or use fuel stabilizer in a full tank of fuel. Add Advanced Formula Fuel Treatment and Stabilizer according to the package directions. Then—and this is important—run the mower for a few minutes so the stabilizer circulates through the carburetor. The stabilizer keeps fuel
