Clean slate: NT hockey takes the ice Lumberjacks get to work looking to build on strong year

By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

Even before the puck dropped, the Jacks couldn’t wait to get back to work. As the North Tonawanda hockey team stepped onto the ice preparing for the start of the WNY Federation season, it shook off the cobwebs with some informal workouts and skill drills at hockey outlet. “We got better as the week went on,” said NT coach Alan Zbytek. “Getting that camaraderie with the guys all back together on the ice again.” Eager to get back to work, the Jacks are coming off of a strong 2013-14 season. They went 11-4-1 for 23 points to finish in second place in Division III, just one point behind first-place Lewiston-Porter. Leading the way will be top scoring threats Curtis Vivian and Sam Rydzewski. Vivian had 21 points in 16 games, leading the Jacks in power-play goals (three) and goals (16). Rydzewski, meanwhile, had two power-play goals while his 16 helpers and 28 total points both led the team. Senior Chris Miller returns to lead the defense. The Jacks will be moving forward without goalie Kyle Painter, who will be playing for the Regals this season. Painter, who was the backbone of the Jacks the past three seasons, went 8-4-1 last year with a 1.83 goals against and 590 minutes played. Junior Christian McIntyre will be counted on to fill the

Lady Warriors’ seniors set bar high for underclassmen By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

The seniors have set the standard. Now, it’s time for the underclassmen to take what they have learned and march forward. Though the Tonawanda Lady Warriors soccer season ended sooner than any of the players wanted it to, they know that as a whole, 2014 was a memorable season. Following a 2013 squad that went to the Section VI Class B finals, this year’s squad came in with the bar set higher then ever before and they responded well. Despite losing core seniors like Alanna Herne, Kalyn Compeau, Megan Tuskes and longtime head coach Julie Johnson, the Warriors, under new head coach and former Lady Warrior Angela Nicholas, had a season to be

proud of. “I think they can walk away feeling a lot of success,” said Nicholas. “I think, more than anything, we created a standard for the program.” The Warriors opened the year by winning the championship of the Dan Durick Memorial Tournament. They held the No. 1 spot in the WNY small school coaches poll for the better part of the season and were in the hunt for the ECIC IV title until the final day of the regular season, before injuries took their toll. The Lady Warriors will say goodbye to seven seniors: tri-captains Melissa Holler, Chezney Belcher and Alexis Lilly, as well as Shelby Stone, Jocelyn Lorenz, Jesalyn Cala and Heather Farnham. Nicholas said her seniors set a tone that the other girls will hold themselves to going forward. Finishing 12-5-0 overall, the Warriors ended the season ranked as the No. 3 team in Class B. They scored 64 goals, 23 of which came from Offensive MVP Hope Balling, while yielding just 14.

The Lady Warriors will return a strong core of talented players that includes Balling and fellow freshman Grace Stranahan. Farnham, Pearl Bacon, Defensive MVP Sydney Kowsky, Gabby Krajewski, and goalie Haley Schoelerman also return. Schoelerman, in her first season of varsity, had 10 shutouts and a save percentage of 84.7. Brianna Baker, Dahnea Harrison, Shana Johnson, JEFFREY T. It’s the only league I’ve ever really been around. To stay in the league is awesome. Just great timing and a great opportunity and I’m excited about it.” A member of the Kenmore West Class of 2007, Licata played two-and-a-half years of varsity for the Blue Devils before going onto play his freshman season at Medaille. Getting his first real taste of coaching with the Ben Franklin Middle School modified boys team during the 2011-12 season, Licata and best friend Cory Martin would move on to coach the Lady Blue Devils JV team for the next two seasons. A typical coach’s kid, Licata, possesses an incredibly strong knowledge and love for the game. Every bit as important is that fact Licata knows how to reach kids as individuals and teach them. Just as vital, spending his entire life watching his dad and his longtime coaching partner Jeff Martin coach Ken West has given Licata strong insight on the subtle differences between coaching girls and boys teams. “ T h i s i s s o m e b o d y ’s quote, it’s not mine. I heard it from somebody,” said

Licata. “‘The biggest difference to me is in a men’s team you have to play good in order to feel good. For women’s basketball, usually you have to feel good to play good.’ That quote stuck with me.” Having been connected to the Niagara Frontier League for all of his basketball life, Licata knows full well the rivalry that West and NT have had. Licata is eager to teach his NT girls basketball team the way he knows the game, but at the same time, Licata knows that he must be mindful to not force things on his new team or make them feel he is trying to turn his Lady Jacks into a replica of the rival Blue Devils. But he definitely plans stress to his new team the importance of key Lady Blue Devil traits like in-your-face defense and the mindset of always being ready to out work the other team as part of his plan to make North Tonawanda successful. “(West) always seemed ready when it came to game time. So I’m really gonna try to bring that to NT,” said Licata. “We’re gonna try and have that crazy energy and that mentality going into games of ‘I don’t care who we’re playing, we can beat this team.’ We practiced hard enough and we prepared well enough that we have some sort of edge.”

There will be a changing of the guard for the Tonawanda boys varsity soccer team. As the Warriors put the 2014 season to bed and eagerly look forward to next year, they will be moving forward without two of the biggest pieces of the puzzle in recent years. Chuckie Richards and Nate Holler, two of the Warriors’ five seniors, will be moving on. Both sophomore starters and key parts of the squad that won the Section VI Class B2 title in 2012, the program’s first sectional title in 20 years, Richards and Holler were the cornerstones of the rebuilding process in 2013 after 11 seniors graduated from the sectional title team. After weathering some tough times last season, the Warriors rebounded with a strong year as they finished in second place in ECIC IV with a 6-3-1 mark, (9-8-1 overall). “I’m very proud of how this team matured,” said coach James Gabor. Richards and Holler were both named to ECIC IV first team and were selected to play in the exceptional seniors game, with Gabor serving as their team’s coach. Though they were on the losing side of a 2-1 final, Holler managed to score his teams lone goal in the game, which showcased

Recalling when he first saw Holler as a seventh grader, Gabor said that even back then he knew Nate would be something special. “He’s a player that I’m going to miss and our program is going to miss,” said Gabor. Holler, who was named team MVP, closes out his four-year varsity career at Tonawanda with 45 goals and 17 assists. All of Tonawanda has rallied to the side of the Woomers with the ‘Go Red For Jed’ motto as a show of support and solidarity to get Woomer and his family through these most difficult times. “I was in disbelief,” said Warrior Tom Draves. “I had just gotten back from a week-long trip and I found out about Jed, because he’s a close friend of the family.” Along with wearing red every

World record relay team had no idea it broke a record By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER

June 16, 1968. That was the date that history was made as eight high school students from Lockport broke the world record in a 100-mile relay. Much has been said about that historic moment 46 years ago on that cinder track, but perhaps the most fascinating part of the feat is the story behind how it happened and how the eight runners had no idea that they had set a record until they were well into their adult lives. On that Sunday in 1968, Lockport head coach John Chew recruited senior runners Bobby Brown, Jim Rycyna and Charlie Quagliana, along with junior Brian Brooks and four freshmen in George Bickford, Jeff Hulshoff, Franklyn Pfeil and Jeff Watkins to run the 100-mile relay, which was a common occurrence for teams at the time. With the exception of Hulshoff, whose brother ran the relay just a few years prior, none of the runners had any idea as to what it would take to complete the task that day and they certainly had no idea that it would take them 7 hours, 27 minutes and 55 seconds to complete. “I had no concept whatsoever,” said Brown. “I had no idea how long we were going to run. The only thing I remember from that day was someone came up to me and he said, ‘Brownie good luck, I’ll be done after I’m done working today.’ Meaning he was going to work his eight hour shift. I

see what kind of speed that they could build up. “A coach’s great attribute is to make a difficult thing fun for you and only reveal enough information to get it done,” said Watkins. “He was good at that. He was a good communicator. He made you think that that you could do it but he also expected you to do it.” While two of the star runners in Brown and Rycyna were seniors at the time, those four freshmen never attempted to run the relay again, and they believe firmly that they would have never been able to duplicate that particular day. From the beautiful weather of the day to the fact that nobody got injured while running, each of those runners believes that there was something magical about June 16, 1968. “Something about that day with the fact that nobody got hurt and nobody buckled,” said Pfeil. “I don’t care who you have today, it was sort of amazing, and if you got eight great runners today somebody is going to come up with a problem. Patience pays off for former St. Francis goalie Diebold By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR

Sometimes it just takes a little patience. Patience on the ice and patience in the classroom. For RPI senior netminder Scott Diebold (St. Francis High School), patience is something that became a virtue. After playing 45 to 50 games at St. Francis High School and being the main man at the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey league, Diebold had to wait his turn when heading to college.

It was a different feeling for him, but one he understood and got used to. “Going from playing 45 to 50 games in high school, I struggled with it a little bit,” Diebold recently said by phone. “You just have to wait your chance. You can’t worry about what you can’t control.” It would have been easy for Diebold to sit and pout over the fact he wasn’t able to get a lot of playing time early on. Instead, however, he used his time wisely, getting better at the craft he has been honing since he was a little boy. It also helped that he has had a great teacher in coach

Seth Appert. Appert took the reins during the 2006-07 season and he has worked with Diebold to get better in all aspects of his game. “One of the best goalie coaches in the game,” stated Diebold. “Inevitable that you will get better.” After seeing limited action during his freshman and sophomore campaigns, Diebold took the bull by the horns last season and played in 36 games — 35 of which were starts — boasting a 2.50 goals against average. The fact that he was able to get back on the ice regularly was rewarding for him as he put in the extra work during practice and before

games. “You just have to treat every practice like it’s a game,” Diebold said. “It’s been a blast.” It also has been a blast in the classroom. But it didn’t start that way in the beginning. After being used to a routine in high school, when Diebold went off to play junior, he didn’t have to take any classes. It was just hockey all the time every day. So when he entered RPI and tackled the academic rigors that accompany the school, it took the former Red Raider some time getting used to the flow again. “I was used to laying around playing hockey,”

laughed Diebold. “School was on another level. It blindsided me at first. I had to learn how to study again.” And learn he did. The industrial and management engineering major thanks St. Francis High School for getting him ready for the academic rigors that RPI present. “Academic are unreal at Frannies,” said Diebold. “They hold you to a high academic standard. It puts you in a different category.” Another category Diebold would like to be in is that of a professional hockey player after he graduates. He sees the success of some of his friends that have gone on to

either play in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), American Hockey League (AHL) or overseas in Europe. The fact that they have had success gives him reason that he will be able to succeed as well. If it doesn’t workout, however, then he will always have a backup plan. “I have been at the rink with these guys, played with these guys. Vinny is doing well and Anthony is doing well overseas,” said Diebold. “I definitely want to play hockey somewhere. But if it doesn’t work out, I will go back to school in Buffalo.” Always the patient person.

THE COLLEGE Mann, UB to make first appearance in Women’s College Cup By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Courtney Mann could barely believe her eyes. Sitting in the front row of the team meeting room at UB Stadium, Mann saw the word “BUFFALO” flash on the big screen during the Women’s College Cup selection show. “It was one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen,” said Mann, a Frontier High School graduate

and senior captain on the UB women’s soccer team. “Being a local kid, seeing that name up there, that’s what you dream about.” As a 15 seed, UB (16-23) will face No. 6-ranked Penn State (17-3) in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Nov. 14) on the Nittany Lions home field in University Park, Pa. “It’s going to be a big

challenge,” said junior Jackie Hall, the MAC Defensive Player of the Year. “But go big or go home, right?” Hall scored the winning goal in Sunday’s MAC Championship game at UB Stadium, capping off a record-breaking run in which the Bulls went unbeaten at home (11-0-1) and in conference play (11-0-2). “This team has been making history all year long, so it’s another op-

portunity for us,” firstyear coach Shawn Burke said. UB’s only two losses have come on the road at No. 19 Virginia Tech and Cornell. Penn State won its 16th Big 10 regular season championship this season but was upset in the conference tournament by Northwestern. This will be the Bulls first appearance in the Women’s College Cup following just the fourth

team MAC team championship in UB’s history. “It starts at the top with the leadership from our captains and seniors,” Burke said. Mann was one of eight UB players named to the all-conference teams. She was joined on the firstteam by Hall, MAC Offensive Player of the Year Katie Roberts, and goalkeeper Laura Dougall, who was also named MAC Freshman of the Year. Burke, who was named

MAC Coach of the Year, recruited Mann and most of the Bulls top players during his time as an assistant coach, and believed the talent was in place to have a special season when he interviewed for the head job last spring. Mann was one of the first players he recruited. “In eight years of coaching in college, she is one of the best athletes I’ve ever worked with,” Burke said earlier this season.

Combating financial needs in the classroom, one school at a time By Anna Cappello COURIER INTERN

Four-hundred and eighth five. According to a recent national survey, this is the average amount of money that teachers spend on school supplies and classroom materials out of their own pockets each year. But what if there was a program that allowed school teachers to shop for supplies without paying a single cent? The good news is such a program does exist and it’s called The Teachers Desk. This organization was founded by John Mika who, after working 30 years at GM and as a substitute teacher at Williamsville Public School, was driven to help the community. He specifically wanted to give students in need tools for education. “I just saw the incredible difference between what kids in the city schools don’t have and what kids in suburbs do have” Mika said. The Teachers Desk, set up like an office-supply store, allows teachers to shop for classroom necessities like

paper, pencils, glue and children’s books. Other organizational supplies such as binders and folders are available as well for no charge. A grand total of $200,000 in free school supplies is distributed on a weekly basis. Reaching out to 84,000 students annually throughout Western New York, this ministry is more than ready to combat any financial problems in the classroom. “We have about 150 schools all the way from Salamanca to Ripley and pretty much everywhere in between” Mika said. “And we are always looking for more schools.” Any school that has 70 percent or greater student participation in the National School Lunch Program, Mika stated, is eligible to shop at The Teachers Desk. Each teacher receives $900 on average in free supplies for their classroom. Does your school meet the requirements and want to be registered? ‘Weekend Update’ anchor connected to the Queen City By: Lauren Kirchmyer When Seth Meyers left the desk of “Weekend Update” on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” fans were wondering who would replace him. Although it looked as though it would be cast member Cecily Strong, Lorne Michaels asked the show’s head writer, Colin Jost, to fill Meyers’ shoes alongside comedian Michael Che. “Getting ‘Weekend Update’ has been the biggest moment of my life,” Jost said. “To perform on ‘SNL’ and be part of the cast and tradition is really cool.” But if you look at his life prior to his “Saturday Night Live” career, you may be surprised Jost is where he is today. “There are many people in my family history who worked in the engineering industry,” he explained. His father, an East Aurora native, worked for Struthers Wells in Buffalo, prior to moving to New York City to work for Procter & Gamble. Jost, on the other hand, enjoyed making people laugh while growing up in Staten Island. In sixth grade, he and his friends convinced their teacher to let them perform skits from “Saturday Night Live” for the class. When it came time to decide what he wanted to study for his undergrad however, Jost picked something far from comedy. The Harvard graduate studied the history and literature

of Russia and Britain because he enjoyed reading. “I didn’t know I could have a job in comedy. I thought it was just a fun thing to do on the side.” When he graduated college, Jost decided to submit a packet of his writing to “Saturday Night Live.” He didn’t hear back and six months later submitted a second packet. This time he received a phone call and went in for an interview with the show’s head writer, Tina Fey. She liked Jost and he moved on to another interview, with Michaels. “At the end he was like, ‘I’ll be

The Chris Klug Foundation (CKF) is pleased to announce the winners of the first annual Bounce Back Award, presented by Astellas. The award recognizes two transplant recipients who exhibit a great quality of life. Nominations for the award were open Sept. 16 to Oct. 16. Over 75 nominations came in from 27 states across the country, and CKF staff and board members selected two winners. Winner Barbara Breckenridge, of Buffalo, is a 15-year kidney transplant

recipient. Since being given a second chance at life, Breckenridge has dedicated her life to advocating for organ and tissue donation. According to Sarah Diina, director of marketing and communications at the Upstate New York Transplant Center, “Barbara provides peer counseling for dialysis patients, transplant patients and their families, and newly diagnosed kidney disease individuals. Barbara facilitates a kidney support group at Erie County Medical Center, and had

seeing you around,’” Jost said about the show’s creator and producer. “I was not sure what it meant. Then I got a call interpreting what Lorne said and I started the next week.” His writing received a lot of laughs and Jost worked his way up the “SNL” writing chain, earning him Emmy nominations along the way. Some of his favorite skits include when the cast sang Billy Joel’s “Goodnight Saigon” on Will Ferrell’s finale show, when Jonah Hill serenaded his “wife” for their anniversary and when Vanessa Bayer portrayed Miley Cyrus after her performance on MTV’s Video Music Awards. His favorite guests to write for are the ones who have an inherent comedy in them, such as Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifanakis

and Emma Stone. He hopes to someday have the chance to write skits for comedians Eddie Murphy and Stephen Colbert, as well as actors Kate Winslet and Michael Keaton. Outside of “Saturday Night Live,” Jost enjoys performing stand-up shows. “I’m a lot looser and goofier than the news anchor character I play on ‘Weekend Update,’” he said. To prepare for his shows, Jost spends time exploring the cities he’s performing in. Last week, Jost performed at Bear’s Den Showroom at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino. Before his show, he explored the American and Canadian sides of the falls and roamed around the city his father grew up in. “It’s so beautiful,” he said about the area. “It’s really cool to wander around and see the town.” Jost is also working on starting a career writing screenplays for movies. “It’s the hardest writing process because there’s so much going on. You have to make the script unique and funny and interesting for the viewer.” After having multiple screenplays rejected, or being accepted but having nothing created, his first movie finally came through. “Staten Island Summer,” a film filled with “Saturday Nigh Live” cast members about lifeguards who are spending their last week of summer together before they go away to college, is expected to be out in the spring or summer of 2015.

done many radio and television appearances promoting the Donate Life cause.” Breckenridge has also won over 31 medals at the Transplant Games, and has traveled to Australia, Sweden and South Africa to compete. Breckenridge’s tireless advocacy embodies the spirit of the Bounce Back Award. Winner David Miller, of Semmes, Ala., received a liver from the family of a 13-year-old boy who lost his life after a tragic fall. Their selfless decision to donate their son’s organs gave Miller a second chance at life. Since his transplant, Miller has not let any obstacle slow him down. He educates high school students to teach their peers about organ and tissue donation and to register them as donors. Through his efforts, his group registered 863 organ donors. Miller has also won at the World Transplant Games and participates in 5K runs. Miller leads by example and is truly deserving of the Bounce Back Award. The winners and one guest each will travel to Aspen, Colo. for the Chris Klug Foundation’s ninth annual Aspen Summit for Life weekend Dec. 5-6. CKF will host the winners and provide flights, lodging and tickets to all Summit for Life weekend events. The Bounce Back Award will be presented on Dec. 6 on top of Aspen Mountain in front of 400 racers

and CKF supporters. “We are thrilled by the response to the first annual Bounce Back Award, presented by Astellas,” said Beth Slater, executive director, CKF. “We read so many amazing stories of what is possible after a lifesaving transplant. Picking just two winners was an incredibly difficult task, but we’re so proud of Barbara and David and the way they live their lives.” Chris Klug, founder and chairman of CKF, looks forward to welcoming the Bounce Back Award winners to Aspen. “I couldn’t be more excited to welcome Barbara and David to my hometown of Aspen to celebrate life together and recognize their volunteerism to help others in the transplant community today. All over the country our Donor Dudes volunteers support our work and help us get the word out about donation. Both Barbara and David are officially Donor Dudes. We can’t wait to recognize both winners here in Aspen at the ninth annual Aspen Summit for Life.” Becoming a registered organ and tissue donor is a way to have a lasting legacy, and it’s as simple as going to www. chrisklugfoundation. org to sign up. For more information on this program or on the Chris Klug Foundation, contact Beth Slater at 970-6187120.
