Falcons to lean on new core in quest for fourth straight sectional championship
By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
It has been a dominant three years for Niagara-Wheatfield. The Falcons have skated their way to three consecutive sectional championships and this season they aim for a remarkable fourth. This season does pose some obstacles, however, as Niagara-Wheatfield graduated 14 seniors from last year, so it will be relying on some key players 2014-15 Fed Schedule Dec. 7 vs. Lancaster 1 p.m. at Buffalo State Dec. 11 vs. St. Joe’s 5 p.m. at Hyde Park 1 Dec. 14 vs. Frontier 8 p.m. at Harbor Center 2 Dec. 18 vs. Canisius 5 p.m. at Hyde Park 1 Dec. 21 vs. Will. to show the young guns how to continue to achieve excellence. “We just try to make sure they know why it happened because the guys before them worked real hard,” said NiagaraWheatfield head coach Rick Wrazin. “With our guys that return, every year we tell them that they have to teach the new guys how it works.” Wrazin doesn’t believe that this will be a rebuilding year for his squad as he sees similarities between this team and the championship teams of years past. Even though the Falcons have lost a strong contingent of players to graduation, it looks as though the new players are ready to step in and fill the void. “They are similar in a lot of ways,” said Wrazin. “They are very close already which is nice to see. We lost 14 last year so we have a lot of new kids, but a lot of kids that look like they can step in and do the job right away. It’s hard to say this early, but up front we have a lot of speed which we have had the last couple of years.” While the Falcons have lost the top two scorers from last year, they do return the No. 3 man in Andrew Logar. The senior forward posted 12 goals and 13 assists a season ago, and it appears as if he is ready to become the go-to player for Niagara-Wheatfield. “I’m looking forward to it,” said Logar. “It will be nice having a little more pressure on me to score a few more goals. Obviously I want to win states, which we have never done before, but as far as myself, I’d like to be up there in points for the league.” Another huge returning component affects the team both on and off of the ice as captain James Stenzel is back for his senior season. Stenzel captained last year’s team and has been a force on the blue line for his entire career, notching three goals and five

assists in 2013-14, but his biggest asset on this team may be his leadership. “We do have a few veterans,” said Stenzel. “We like to push our guys, if we see someone slacking we tell them to pick it up. We are a team.” Logar and Stenzel will also be joined by fellow senior Domenic Senese, who adds some size on the forward line at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds. Senese also has a reputation as a player that seems to find the back of the net in big situations, which is always crucial

Joe’s focused on finish after another title win By Dave Ricci

It’s not how you start, but how you finish. Especially when you finish up the year raising the state champion-
ship plaque. Those are the words the St. Joe’s Marauders WNY Federation hockey team will be living by as it returns to the ice this season. The Marauders, who have won states three out of the last four years under coach Rich Crozier, had a less than impressive start to the 201314 season, going 5-9-1. But they hit their stride at midseason with a strong showing at the prestigious

St. Joe’s parlayed that showing into a near-unstoppable run that saw it win 12 of its next 13 games and culminated the year with a 2-1 win over St. Anthony’s (L.I.) to claim the NYSCHSAA title. It’s a run of success that Crozier has defined as a culture of success. “Anyone that went through the journey with us last year, which was a unique year in terms of the way we were able to turn things around,” Crozier said. “I’m going to lean on them.” But as they enter the new year, the Marauders are once again faced with moving forward after losing key pieces, most notably starting goalie Peter Chopra,

Crozier described Pontello as a dynamic player with a long reach who is physically strong and able to play in any situation. Lockport looking forward to playing in new rink By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER
The ice hockey program at Lockport has gotten a face lift. With the opening of Cornerstone CFCU Arena, it gives the Lions a legitimate home rink for the first time 2014-15 Fed Schedule Dec. 1 vs. Lew-Port 6:45 p.m. at Hyde Park 1 Dec. 12 vs. Niagara Falls 7:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Arena Dec. 14 vs. Amherst 6:45 p.m. at Harbor Center 1 Dec. 19 vs. St. Francis 7:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Arena Jan. 2 vs. Sweet Home 7:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Arena Jan. 4 vs. St. Mary’s 4 p.m. at Northtown Olympic Jan. 9 vs. St. Francis 7:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Arena Jan. 12 vs. Lew-Port 8:45 p.m. at Hyde Park 1 Jan. 15 vs. Niagara Falls 5 p.m. at Hyde Park 1 Jan. 18 vs. St. Mary’s 7:30 p.m. at Niagara University Jan. 23 vs. North Tonawanda 7:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Arena Jan. 30 vs. Grand Island 7:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Arena Feb. 2 vs. North Tonawanda 8:45 p.m. at Hyde Park 1 Feb. 6 vs. Amherst 7:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Arena Feb. 8 vs. Sweet Home 4 p.m. at Northtown Olympic Feb. 13 vs. W. in years. The new rink in Lockport gives the program hope that the city will start to see an influx of hockey players, but for now, the Lions are forced to go with a small roster and will trudge through early-morning practices. “We are just going to do our best with what we’ve got,” said Lockport captain John Ottaviano. “It’s just a little bit more work.” With just 20 players on the roster, the load will fall heavily on two lines of forwards and two pairs of defensemen to carry the Lions through the season. Only six of those 20 players are seniors, so it will give the underclassmen some experience and a lot of playing time this year. One of those underclassmen is Ottaviano, who saw significant minutes last season as a sophomore registering five points. He was voted as the team captain this year. The junior leader feels that this squad has a lot of chemistry, especially since many of the players are on the same travel teams outside of Lockport. “I have a couple of guys from my travel team on this Lockport team,” said Ottaviano. “We have chemistry and kids get along well so we should have a good season.” Lockport lost its top three leading scorers from a season ago, but it will return many players like Ottaviano that saw meaningful minutes. One of those players is
JEFFREY T. BARNES
The Lockport boys hockey team is looking to build on a season in which it went 3-12-1. junior Kellen Corrallo, who scored four goals and tallied five assists last year. But he will be asked to take on a much bigger role this season and he feels that the squad is much deeper in talent despite having fewer numbers. “We have two amazing lines this year,” said Corrallo. “Last year we had one good line and an iffy line. This year we have two really good lines. It’s kind of a competition to see who is better, actually.” Corrallo and Ottaviano will be joined up front by assistant captains Dom Morreale and Zach Long, as well as JV call-ups Ryan Boci and Dylan Skalman. On the back end, Ryan
Niedzialowski returns after dishing out six assists in just 11 games as a junior. He’ll be joined by Matt Scott, Drew Gmerek and freshmen Brennan Bailey. Lockport head coach Rick Eberhart is happy with his power play and penalty kill units; he just knows that his team is limited by numbers. “Our power play looks good, our penalty kill looks good, we just need more bodies,” said Eberhart. “We lost three guys because of grades. So they have to get their grades up in order to be eligible to play. Those are key players. We should have four lines instead of two-anda-half to three.”
With sophomores such as Skalman and Gmerek and freshmen Bailey and Boci, it gives the Lions some hope for the future, especially when players begin to flood in through the JV program in the next couple of years. A limited roster means that handful of players will be seeing significant ice time this year, so fatigue will undoubtedly be a factor, which is why they brought in a strength and conditioning coach to help manage the team through tired legs. It also means that Lockport will most likely face a fair number of shots and goaltender Jack Igoe will be ready for the task as he comes back for his second season as the starter. The junior posted a 2-7-1 record last year with a 3.89 goals against average in 12 appearances, but he is ready to show that he has taken the next step in his development now that he has a full year of experience HEAD COACH: Rick Eberhart COACH’S OUTLOOK: “I think we are going to be competitive in the league that we are in. I’m hoping for .500 or better with the competition that I saw.”
under his belt. “You get a lot of experience in your first year,” said Igoe. “You get used to the shots and the power of the kids that you play against. You should be able to do a lot better in the second year than in the first year.” With just two lines, it means that Igoe may have to play a little more conservatively this season when it comes to hanging on to pucks to get whistles or when to play pucks in his own zone. “We have a solid set of defense, the problem is that we just can’t get them to play all of the minutes we want,” said Igoe. “We have to play a little more conservatively or hold onto the puck a little bit more to give the players a chance to change and get fresh legs on the ice.” Lockport will open play with the Nichols Tournament this weekend (Nov. 28 and 29).

North Tonawanda, Niagara Catholic encouraged by girls hoops scrimmage By Dave Ricci
SPORTS REPORTER
More than anything, it just felt good to see some live action. As Western New York was finally starting to get back to normal after one of the worst storms the region has ever experienced, it was a little bit of business as usual on the court as the Niagara Catholic girls basketball team traveled to North Tonawanda for the first scrimmage of the season. The first shot at live action for both clubs since training camp opened on Nov. 10, the
Lady Jacks and Lady Patriots were eager to put what they’ve been working on to use in a game-like situation. “It was good because playing in practice is not the same as when you’re playing (other) people. You play different against people you don’t know,” said Niagara Catholic senior Jeana Franjoine. “So I think it’s preparing us well for our next game.” Franjoine was part of the Lady Patriots’ starting five, which also included Marina Campbell, Shannon Martineau, Melissa Whisker and Precious Adams. With eight of 12 returning and a deeper bench,
which also included Marissa Campbell, Niagara Catholic coach Larry Puzan believes his team has better numbers and more depth to work with. “That was our question, ‘what was our depth going to be like?” said Puzan. “And I was able to roll nine or 10 girls and they kind of get it. They know what they’re doing on the floor.” North Tonawanda countered with Liz Wildt, Sara Bunker, Meg Weaver, Lindsay Piotrowski and Taylor Benton as its starting five. Benton, a freshman who has made the leap from modified, made a strong accounting of herself and was not overwhelmed in the
least during her first varsity outing. First-year head coach Mike Licata felt the group as a whole executed the game plan as he had hoped and saw some very promising things. “It was so important and I was happy that we could have a scrimmage really early on in our season,” he said. “You do the stuff in practice and you try to get the kids to buy into our new system, but you never really know what it’s going to look like. You can try and replicate it in practice but it’s not until you get into a game-like situation where you’ll see if they’re doing it and buying
in. I was pretty pleased with how we did.” The energy that his team displayed was probably the most encouraging thing that had Licata smiling. After a couple weeks of practicing and a week in which most schools were off while NTHS was still is session, Licata said his girls did a fantastic job of shutting out any outside distractions and playing hard. Senior Sara Bunker showed that she was willing to pay the price physically when she dove to the ground to battle for a loose ball and emerged with a bloody nose. “The things I was worried about are effort. Are they
sprinting up court? Are they rebounding? Shot goes up, are they finding a girl and boxing out?” said Licata. “The stuff that takes no real basketball skill to do, just that hard working mentality. That was the thing I wanted to get out of this.” No score was kept during the six periods of play, but both coaches and teams left feeling optimistic about what the upcoming season holds. “Just to get a live look is so helpful,” said Puzan. North Tonawada will open the season on. Dec. 4 against Newfane as part of the Maryvale Tournament. Niagara Catholic will be in the Park Tournament Dec. 5-6.
State title ambitions Gleason’s gymnasts have Rally Niagara haven’t faded strong showing in Rochester Badminton with new faces to hold “Falcons” from page B1 Wall split time with Nathanial Sommers last year, and in nine appearances he went unblemished, posting a record of 7-0-1 with a 1.68 goals against average and a .933 save percentage. Some other key returnees include forwards Dakota Becker (11 assists) and Alex Bauer (eight goals), along with defenseman Matt Canada and Joseph Torcasio. Even with all of the new faces, the expectations have not diminished for Niagara-Wheatfield. Not only is it aiming for
a fourth straight sectional title, it is also shooting for a state championship that has eluded them in the past. “We are working a lot harder,” said Senese. “Wrazin is teaching a lot of things and the work ethic is harder than it ever has been. We want a state championship and this is a team that I think we can get it with.” Niagara-Wheatfield opens this season with a tilt against Lancaster on Dec. 7 at Buffalo State College.
The Gleason’s Gymnastics Level 8 team traveled to Rochester, New York to compete in the annual Judge’s Cup hosted by Victor’s Gymnastics Club. Allison House, a ninth grader who attends North Tonawanda High School, placed 10th all-around with a score of 34.150. She also placed fourth on the uneven bars with a 9.150 and earned an 8.20 on the vault, 8.70 on the beam, and 8.10 on the floor. Allison Murchison a ninth grader from Starpoint High School, placed fourth on the vault with an 8.65. She also earned a 6.80 on the bars, 6.50 on the beam, and an 8.425 on the floor. Her all-around score was a 30.375, Meanwhile, the Glea-

She finished off the day with a 9.325, earning her sixth place in vault. In the 13-14 age group, Jenna Peterson, an eighth grader at Edward Town Middle School, placed fifth with an all-around score of 35.70. She came in first place on beam with an 8.90 and scored an 8.7 on bars to earn her fourth place. Her high score of the day came on vault with a
9.25 to give her fifth. Also in that age group, Marissa Peters, a seventh grader at Starpoint, had an all-around score of 35.00 to put her in seventh. She took third on beam with an 8.70 and received a 9.30 on floor to give her sixth place in that event. In the 15-and-older group, Samantha Peterson, an 11th grader at NiagaraWheatfield High School, received an 8.850 on bars, placing her in second. She suffered a broken foot on beam, which prohibited her from competing in the rest of the competition. The team placed second at the meet.

Expectant moms and their babies to benefit from new March of Dimes project The March of Dimes announced a partnership with Catholic Health’s Mercy Hospital of Buffalo and Sisters of Charity Hospital, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, Kaleida Health’s Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, the Erie and Niagara County Departments of Health, and the Health Foundation for Western & Central New York to implement the Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait program. March of Dimes Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait (HBWW) provides education for pregnant women, perinatal providers and the greater community on the problem of preterm birth, risk factors and strategies for reducing risk. In addition, HBWW provides a supportive structure for implementing bundled, evidence-based preterm birth prevention interventions. “Preparing for a new baby is a time of great excitement,” said Aimee Gomlak, vice president of WomenCare at Catholic Health. “Families don’t expect anything to go wrong, but in about one in nine births, babies are born too soon. Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait aims to help eliminate preventable preterm births by combining clinical, education and community efforts.” Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait is an important component of the March of Dimes Prematu-
rity Campaign, a nationwide effort to address the growing problem of premature birth, which is the leading cause of newborn death and a major cause of serious health problems. It costs society billions of dollars every year. The March of Dimes is also funding research to find the causes of premature birth. The announcement fittingly comes on the fourth World Prematurity Day and on the heels of the March of Dimes recent Premature Birth Report Card. Though there has been a seven-year improving trend in New York’s preterm birth rate, that has helped give more babies a healthy start in life and contributed to the improvement in the national rate, New York’s preterm birth rate was 10.7 percent in 2013. This is down from 12.4 in 2006, the year the rates peaked, but still only earned New York a “B” on the report card. The national preterm birth rate fell to 11.4 percent in 2013 – the lowest in 17 years – meeting the federal Healthy People 2020 goal seven years early. Despite this progress, the nation still received a “C” on the annual report card and still has the highest rate of preterm birth of any industrialized country. “Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo is thrilled to partner with
March of Dimes because of their reputation for excellence and the resources and education they provide to moms and babies,” said Allegra Jaros, president. “March of Dimes does incredible work every day to improve the health of moms and babies. And they educate the community at large about the problem of prematurity, a problem that many call our nation’s silent health crisis.” In 2007, Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait began as a demonstration project of the March of Dimes in Kentucky. The success of that project from 2007-present brought about the foundation’s decision to make HBWW a signature program in 2010, when it was rolled out to two new states (Texas and New Jersey). March of Dimes ultimately hopes to bring the program to needy communities across the country. There are now over 27 of the sites nationwide, with nine sites in Kentucky, five sites in Texas, two sites in New Jersey and seven sites in Kansas. “Partnerships with state and local health departments, our hospital partners and health care providers are a testament to how focused and effective policies, strong leadership, and clinician commitment have led to improvements in obstetric and newborn outcomes in a problem as
complex and seemingly intractable as preterm delivery,” said Christopher Glantz, MD, MPH, professor of OB/GYN and public health sciences at the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Strong Memorial Hospital and March of Dimes volunteer spokesperson. “Through the March of Dimes unique, team-based research and implementation projects, including decreasing the number of elective deliveries before 39 weeks, we will continue the important work of preventing preterm birth, so more babies will get a healthy start in life.” Premature birth, birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy, is a serious health problem that costs the United States more than $26 billion annually, according to the Institute of Medicine. It is the leading cause of newborn death, and babies who survive an early birth often face the risk of lifetime health challenges, such as breathing problems, cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities and others. Even babies born just a few weeks early have higher rates of hospitalization and illness than full-term infants. At least 39 weeks of pregnancy are important to a baby’s health because many important organs, including the brain and lungs, are not completely developed until then.

Be prepared and stay safe during winter driving months Every start to the winter season, you promise yourself that this year will be different, that you’ll be ready for whatever blizzard Mother Nature sends us. We all know that winter driving can be a test for even expert drivers and you need to be prepared at all times. Before the storm hits, take a moment to review a few simple winter driving tips and doublecheck that you have the proper emergency gear
in your vehicle to ensure your safety. Not all drivers are prepared for winter driving conditions, so take it slow when driving on snowy or icy roadways. Drive as the environment warrants, stay alert and reduce your speed. Due to poor visibility and/or bad road conditions, always leave plenty of room between cars. Brake early and slowly giving yourself time to stop and react safely. Keep a full tank of
gas along with gas in your vehicle at all times. Before pulling onto the road, be sure to completely clear snow and ice from your car windows, mirrors, lights, hood and roof. Don’t use cruise control in inclement weather as the slightest touch of your brakes to deactivate can cause loss of vehicle control. Take extra precaution when entering and exiting ramps and bridges as they can be extremely
slippery. While fourwheel drive vehicles may help you get going quicker, they won’t help you stop any quicker – don’t get overconfident when driving one. Make sure your car is properly maintained – the better shape your car is in, the safer you are on the road. Have your battery and ignition system checked, along with your brakes, transmission and tires. All fluids in your vehicle should be checked

ECC unveils Fallen Heroes Memorial Park In honor of the week of Veterans Day, Erie Community College gathered with local veterans, police and fire departments, and community members to proudly unveil its first responder-focused Fallen Heroes Memorial Park— dedicated to students who’ve lost their lives in the line of police, fire or military duty—on Thursday, November 13 outside ECC’s North Campus Law Enforcement Training Academy. “This park stands as a tribute to those ECC alums that made the ultimate sacrifice,” said ECC President Jack Quinn. “It will now be a place for others to remember and honor to their sacrifice for decades to come.” The park—aided by donations from such local Western New York companies as Campobello Construction, Lakeside Sod, Love Joy Metals, Inc. and Occhino Paving; design and construction work from the college’s Architecture Technology, Construction Technology and Visual Communications students; and completion by ECC’s Maintenance and Grounds Department— features trees and flowered latticework; steel silhouettes
Submitted
A memorial wreath was also presented to ECC officials by members of Amherst’s Main-Transit Fire Department, followed by local bagpiper Dan McQue’s stirring version of “Amazing Grace” and local vet Sam Piazza’s trumpeted “Taps” over the event’s hundreds of gathered attendees. of veterans, police officers and firefighters; six towering flag poles flying the American flag and the flags of the five branches of the Armed Services; a 500-pound memorial stone, donated by ECC’s 117th Police Basic class and relocated from a nearby police recruit assembly area; and park benches and picnic tables for those looking to come pay their respects and appreciate the sacrifices of fallen heroes.
To date, 15 of ECC’s alumni have been lost to direct combat in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and two others have died while still on active duty in noncombat circumstances. Many of the region’s police officers and firefighters who’ve died in the line of duty were either ECC graduates or graduates of the college’s Law Enforcement Training Academy (LETA) as well, so the park will stand as a testament to their lives and
the community they called their own. The morning started with the national anthem performed by First Niagara Center fixture Doug Allen. Morning remarks were made by ECC President Jack Quinn; ECC representatives Richard Washousky, Dan Frontera and Ed Hempling; and various attending elected officials before the names off all ECC alums lost through military, fire and police duty were read aloud.
Local students given opportunity to study abroad “Qualified high school students are offered a unique opportunity to spend an academic year, three-month program or summer holiday in Europe, Asia, North and South America, New Zealand, Australia or South Africa as part of the ASSE International Student Exchange Program,” announced Leanne Bell, eastern director of ASSE. “Until a few years ago only a fortunate few could afford to spend a school year or summer abroad. ASSE has changed all of that,” Bell continued. Students 15 to 18 years of age qualify on the basis
of academic performance, character references and a genuine desire to experience abroad with a volunteer host family in one of the many ASSE host countries. “ASSE families abroad are carefully screened to provide a caring environment in which students can learn the language and culture of their host country,” Bell explained. Summer exchange students live with a family abroad who might speak some English. Year and shorter-term three-month program students need not have learned a foreign language as they
receive language and cultural instruction as part of the ASSE program. ASSE students attend regular high school classes along with their new teenage friends. “ASSE exchange students learn by living the language and culture of their new host country,” Bell added. The ASSE International Student Exchange Programs was founded by the Swedish National Department of Education and cooperates with the Canadian Provincial Ministries of Education and the New Zealand Ministry of Education. ASSE also provides
international opportunities for American families to host students from Europe, the Republics of the former Soviet Union (in the U.S.A.), South America, Asia, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. These select students are 15 to 18 years old and will attend the local high school for a semester or an academic year. Students or families interested in more information about the ASSE programs should call 1-800-677-2773 or visit ASSE’s website at www. asse.com.

Non-profit organization seeks representatives ASSE International Student Exchange Programs (ASSE) is seeking new area representatives in your local community. ASSE provides academic year and semester exchange programs in the United States for high school students from around the world. Students are 15 to 18 years of age, have passed a series of academic and character requirements, and are awaiting an opportunity to embark on their American adventure. Area representatives recruit and screen prospective host families, interview students to study abroad and supervise the exchange students in their community. Area representatives are compensated based on the
number of students they are supervising. ASSE’s primary goal is to contribute to international understanding by enabling students to learn about other languages and cultures through active participation in family, school and community life. ASSE’s area representatives are the cornerstone of the organization, making all of this possible. For more information about ASSE or becoming an area representative, call our eastern regional office at 1-800-677-2773 or email us at asseusaeast@ asse.com. We look forward to welcoming you to the ranks of area representatives nationwide – striving towards a world of understanding, one child at a time.
Be prepared and stay safe during winter driving months Every start to the winter season, you promise yourself that this year will be different, that you’ll be ready for whatever blizzard Mother Nature sends us. We all know that winter driving can be a test for even expert drivers and you need to be prepared at all times. Before the storm hits, take a moment to review a few simple winter driving tips and double-check that you have the proper emergency gear in your vehicle to ensure your safety. Keep a full tank of gas along with gas in your vehicle at all times. Before pulling onto the road, be sure to completely clear snow and ice from your car windows, mirrors, lights, hood and roof. Don’t use cruise control in inclement weather as the slightest touch of your brakes to deactivate can cause loss of vehicle control. Take extra precaution when entering and exiting ramps and bridges as they can be extremely slippery. While four-wheel drive vehicles may help you get go-
ing quicker, they won’t help you stop any quicker – don’t get overconfident when driving one. Make sure your car is properly maintained – the better shape your car is in, the safer you are on the road. Have your battery and ignition system checked, along with your brakes, transmission and tires. All fluids in your vehicle should be checked and topped off: deicing washer fluid, oil, power steering and anti-freeze. Change or adjust spark plugs, air, fuel and emission filters. Check your headlights, brake and taillights, blinkers and emergency flashers. If you ever get stuck in the winter season, be prepared by keeping these emergency items handy in your vehicle: a spare tire, wheel wrench, jack, shovel, jumper cables, tow and tire chains, salt or cat litter, working flashlight with extra batteries, bright cloth, first aid kit, ice scraper and snow brush. Extra clothing such as gloves, socks and hats, a blanket, a 12-volt charger for a cell phone, as well as non-perishable foods and bottles of water or juice are vital should you become stranded. Being prepared is the best offense against winter driving. Take it slow, be safe and buckle up. Additional safe driving tips can be found on the Erie County Clerk’s website www.erie.gov/clerk.

Aquarium of Niagara ‘Cruzes’ into the holiday season
YWCA hosts KidBiz during Winter Walk The YWCA Tonawandas will host Winter Walk KidBiz from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the YWCA Tonawandas, 49 Tremont St., North Tonawanda. KidBiz is a unique market place for young entrepreneurs to sell handmade crafts, used toys and books, homemade baked goods and other novelties. The only cost is a $1 business permit. It’s a great opportunity for kids to own their own mini store and earn extra cash.
Parents of entrepreneurs ages 8 to 13 years old who are interested should contact Emily McGrath at 692-5580. They will receive an online training that teaches kids the basics of the retail business: how to properly serve customers, profit and loss principles, how to price merchandise and how to market their goods. An award-winning project, KidBiz was started by the Small Business Development Center to introduce young people to the retail business.
Letters from Santa The North Tonawanda Department of Youth, Recreation and Parks announced that Santa will answer letters from the annual Letters to Santa Program beginning Dec. 1. To all parents, grandparents and well-meaning adults, please let your children write their own letter. Little ones may dictate a letter to a parent. Santa would also love to receive pictures from the children. Include the child’s name, age and full return address on the letter and envelope. Santa and his helpers do try to reply to each and every letter. This program is free of charge. Because of the busyness of the season for Santa and his volunteer helpers, only letters from individual
children will receive a response. Please do not ask to have letters from Santa written to pets; children deserve Santa’s full attention. Because of the volume of holiday mail, the final date to send your letter to Santa is Monday, Dec. 8 as Santa wants to be sure that all letters are answered and delivered. To send your letter to Santa, please label the envelope: Santa Claus, 500 Wheatfield St., North Tonawanda, NY 14120. You may also handcarry your letter to the department of youth, recreation and parks office, 500 Wheatfield St., North Tonawanda by Monday, Dec. 8. Santa will send a personalized letter back, direct from the North Pole.

With the holiday season fast approaching, the Aquarium of Niagara is getting ready to celebrate with a series of events, specials and donation drives. Trainers will also continue to hold daily feeding presentations featuring the Aquarium’s newest family member, six-month-old Atlantic harbor seal, Cruz. Recently, the Aquarium of Niagara celebrated “Reveal the Seal” day by revealing the chosen name for ‘Pup2014.’ After a naming contest that welcomed more than 500 participants, four names closely competed for the top honor. By a slight margin, the public chose Cruz to be the pup’s given name. The spirit of holiday giving will officially kickoff on ‘Giving Tuesday,’ Tuesday, December 2nd. The Aquarium will host a non-perishable food and personal items drive to benefit Heart, Love and Soul of Niagara Falls, and Community Missions of the Niagara Frontier. Also on ‘Giving Tuesday,’ the Aquarium will participate
