Locally-based The Mentholatum Orchard Park Company unrolls new products Village Board

appoints new trustee

By Tim Fenster

ORCHARD PARK SUN EDITOR

There is a fair chance that you might have spread Mentholatum vaporizing rub over your chest, to fend off a bad cough. Maybe you or a female companion recently purchased a Softlips cube for extra lip protection during the dry cold weather. Perhaps you swear by Rohto eye-drops for red and irritated eyes. But did you know that the company responsible for these and many other householdname skin care products is based right here in Orchard Park? The Mentholatum Company, which operates its North American headquarters on Sterling Drive off Milestrip Road, is today one of the top manufacturers of skin care products in the world. The company, along with its parent company, Japan-based Rohto Pharmaceutical Co., also manufacture Oxy acne medication, WellPatch, Natural Ice lip balm and Hada Labo Tokyo skin care products, among others. But Jean Legros, Mentholatum’s senior director of marketing, notes that while the company has a strong presence in national retailers and consumers’ minds, they are still dwarfed by some of their competitors, particularly Proctor & Gamble Co., which

It’s like David and Goliath,” said Legros, adding that Mentholatum also competes against the Fortune 500 corporation Johnson & Johnson. However, the company has staked out a position in both the American and international markets through what Legros calls unique, top-quality skin care products. He says

the company is in a strong position for growth; their goal is to double their revenue in the next five years. With this goal in mind, Mentholatum launched two new, innovative products in the last year. The first, the Softlips Cube, promises effective, soothing lip care, and comes in a sleek, trendy design, aimed particularly for the female market. The other is a Nighttime variant of its original vapor rub, with “natu-

rally soothing lavender” to provide gentler cough relief. “We generally pride ourselves in the passion and the quality of our people to help us develop, produce and market all out of here in Orchard Park,” Legros said. “You talk about Buffalo (as) an AllAmerica City; I like to think that Mentholatum is one of these All-American brands.”

Orchard Park resident and former planning board member Matthew Hartung will fill the open seat on the village board, which has been vacant since Mayor John Wilson’s passing last November. The village board voted to appoint Hartung, who’s been on the planning board for the last seven years, to the post at their Monday, Jan. 26 meeting. Hartung will be up for election in March. “We wanted to have a full board,” said acting mayor David Rood. “He’s very well qualified.” Hartung, a Thorn Avenue resident, is the owner of Fairway Construction Company on South Freeman Road - a municipal utility contractor. Rood expects Hartung’s background will be an asset to the village board. “With his infrastructure knowledge, he’ll bring a lot to the board,” Rood said, “and we’re looking forward to working with him.” Hartung agreed, saying he hoped his appointment will help fill the knowledge void left by Wilson. The former mayor was previously an engineering technician for the town, and later worked as a senior engineering technician at William Schutt & Associates. Asked if he has any plans or goals as a newly-appointed village leader, Hartung said he merely hopes to contribute his skills and expertise to an excellent village board. “The board we have in place is doing a great job of keeping up services and keeping the tax rate low and making the necessary repairs to keep the village going strong,” Hartung said. “It’s a nice honor (to be appointed).” Explaining the nearly three-month wait between Wilson’s death and Hartung’s appointment, Rood said the board had been discussing options for filling the vacant seat since late last year.

In a speaking event at the Orchard Park library Tuesday, Jan. 27, Supervisor Patrick Keem outlined his plans for Orchard Park in 2015, which included talks on the potential Community Activities and Senior Center at Brush Mountain. “I went over to look at the current senior center years ago,” Keem said. “If you’ve been to the senior center you know it’s real small with no parking and narrow stairways. If there was ever a fire in there, it would be hard to get people out from that second floor. There’s all kinds of issues with it.” Keep used the opportunity to further outline his plans for the center, which area seniors would use during the daytime for arts and crafts, and local youth would use at night. The center will include a pool and field house for youth activities. “The field house is going

Who wants to look at anatomy diagrams when they’re at the doctor’s office? Wall art certainly has its place and serves a very real purpose. But there’s something to be said for choosing an alternate path regarding the art hanging in your place of business, and if the business itself is unusual, it might even be more appropriate than the industry standard. Dr. Stephen Novelli of Orchard Park’s Novelli Wellness Center, a Chiropractor who we profiled in several months back, is adding a new feature to his clinic in the form of an art gallery. Beginning with an opening in midFebruary, the Wellness Center will feature approximately 20 pieces of original art spread throughout the facility. The focus will be on regional artists and the shows will rotate every two months. “We had renovated the office and I really wanted to make it something beautiful,” Novelli explained, noting an inspiring trip through a Napa Valley yoga studio called Ubuntu that was well-decorated with local art. “People feel respected by coming to a nice place... they’re trusting us with their health and, to me, this is another way that we’re offering a high quality service.” Novelli said that once the charts and diagrams were off the walls and fresh paint had gone up, he couldn’t bring himself to re-hang them. Instead, they’ll languish in a storage closet while artwork supplied by the West Seneca Arts Society brings the space to life. The initial show, which kicks off officially with a ceremony that’s open to the public on the afternoon of Sunday, February 15, will feature work

There mostly images of people going about their daily activities, dealing with the elements... it creates an entirely different feeling within the facility.” Novelli went on to describe the process of creating a monotype, which is essentially a printmaking technique using inks on a surface that are then pressed onto porous papers - a form of lithography. Rather than adding paint to create the image as one does on a canvas, Novelli’s grandfather applied ink to a zinc plate, then created the monotype images by process of subtraction, removing excess ink and tweaking the di-

rections it took on the plate to create an image. John Novelli, now 93, worked professionally as a cameraman for Channel 4 (WIVB) and also did some video production for the station before retiring to give his art full-time attention. It has apparently always been a priority, though, and his body of work encompasses a number of mediums including sculpture and oil painting. “In the past, when he’s gone to Italy, he sets up shop in stores and galleries and will do replicas of famous paintings on the spot so people can gather around and watch him at work,” Novelli said. While the specifics are still evolving, the shows will each have a thematic thread running through, whether by medium or subject matter, and will feature a variety of the West Seneca group’s members. To make certain that interested parties in the community can enjoy the art shows along with Novelli’s

clients, opening receptions will be help regularly when new work goes up. Novelli hopes that in addition to making office visits more memorable for his clients, perhaps the art can also provide a welcome distraction from what ails them. “If the artwork gives them something else to think about other than their pain while they’re here, I feel like it almost functions as art therapy,” he said “It’s a win-win situation for everybody.” The Novelli Wellness Center welcomes the community to join in celebrating the opening of The Monotype Collection from artist John C. Novelli, with some wine and hors d’oeuvres on Sunday, February 15, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Novelli Wellness Center is located at Parkland Professional Park, 3045 Southwestern Blvd, Suite 102, Orchard Park, NY 14127 Kindly RSVP Suzanne_M_ Novelli@glic.com.

Aurora Town Board members are excited over a recent deal with the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation that is expected to save the town thousands in lighting replacement costs. The town board agreed at their Monday, Jan. 26 meeting to sign a deal to replace the lightbulbs throughout the Southside Municipal Center at 300 Gleed Ave. Under the agreement, the town will replacement thousands of fluorescent lightbulbs with more energy-efficient LED bulbs for a total cost of

roughly $350,700. The project will be paid for by a seven and a half year loan with the New York Power Authority. However, NYSEG will provide the town with an estimated incentive of $77,958 toward the project, bringing the total project cost down to $290,294. Meanwhile, the estimated average energy savings from the project - $3,195 per month will all but offset the estimated monthly loan payments to NYPA, which are $3,350. Additionally, over the next 20 years, the shift from fluorescent to LED lighting will save the town an estimated $766,860 based on current rates. But as Councilwoman Susan Friess

pointed out, electricity rates will almost surely rise in the next two decades, increasing the potential savings from the shift. “It’s a win-win,” said Supervisor James Bach. “It’s almost like it’s not costing us anything to do this.” Bach noted that the town would also see savings by needing fewer bulb replacements in the future, and that the move would also make the town offices more eco-friendly. “We’re very conservative about what we’ll save,” Bach said. In addition to using less energy than the current fluorescent bulbs, the new lighting will also

utilize motion sensors, keeping the lights off or dim afterhours, but allowing them to automatically illuminate once somebody enters the vicinity. The municipal center also houses a BOCES alternative education program, Explore & More Children’s museum, and a handful of other tenants. In other news, Bach announced that the town had at last been awarded an Erie County Community Development Block Grant to repair and upgrade the Aurora Senior Center. The $86,487 grant will be used to replace aging fitness equipment, poorly sealed windows and “worn out” carpeting, and to install a

generator at the center at 101 King St. “Everything is wearing out and coming to its life expectancy,” Bach said. “It’s a very well-trafficked senior center.” Bach explained that the building is used as a warming center during emergencies and power outages, and said having a generator onsite drastically improves its effectiveness. As per the grant’s requirements, the town and Village of East Aurora will need to contribute 5 percent apiece of the grant’s total amount. The two entities are splitting the cost because while the senior center is owned by the town, it is located within the village.

Therefore the village board must also accept the grant at their meeting Monday, Feb. 2. Town board members expressed excitement at winning the grant. Councilwoman Jolene Jeffe said the town applied for the grant four years in a row. The letter from County Executive Mark Poloncarz to the town states that these grants are highly competitive; of the 30 proposals received by the project selection committee this year, only 10 were approved. They are competitive due to limited funds, Poloncarz said. “It’s one of those situations that persistence paid off,” Jeffe said.

ON POINT By Aaron Garland

It was one thing to have one-on-one film sessions and constructive conversations with her coach. It’s another for the teachings from them to be transparent on the court, and with Julianna Meisenheimer, they are. Last season, Meisenheimer, in her second year on the East Aurora girls basketball team and first as the starting point guard, began meeting with coach Gary Schutrum to discuss the inner workings of her position. She was in the right place. Schutrum was a point guard when he played, so he learned the game from that perspective. During her time on varsity, Meisenheimer could always shoot, could always score. But this season, she added another dynamic dimension. Meisenheimer, a sophomore, is still scoring — at a higher clip than before, even, with an accurate 3-point shot and tough-to-defend pull-up jumper — but she’s also the floor general Schutrum was grooming her to be. Her recognition of what offenses and defenses to call often mirrors what Schutrum

If he says ‘They’re playing this zone or this man or this coverage,’ I know how

The Orchard Park wrestling team, in a three-day span, discovered a confidence that’s been scarce during much of the season. On Jan. 20, the Quakers went to a duals tournament at Gowanda and lost to Frontier. But they stuck with the program, and the following Friday (Jan. 23), Orchard Park defeated the Falcons on their senior night, 43-38, for its first victory of the year. Quakers assistant coach Bruce Pryce said the squad,

which consists of mostly underclassmen, wasn’t intimidated at Frontier. It wrestled with conviction and force and was not discouraged by losing to the same team just three days prior. Zach Herr (forfeit, 99-pound weight class), Jason Omar (106), Rocco Giannicchi (113), Jayden Lopez (120), Aaron Cassiano (145), Solomon Brown (160), Tim Darling (170, fifth straight win) and Billy Myers (182) won their respective matches for OP (1-6 ECIC I). “Most of the parents were coming out of the stands going ‘Man, they were really battling,’” Pryce said.

Track becomes ‘Major’ for Orchard Park senior

By Aaron Garland

Her original intention wasn’t for running to become this serious. It wasn’t supposed to evolve into a priority that now lies just beneath academics. Rami Major’s main sport was almost always soccer. She joined modified track and field at Orchard Park in seventh grade as a means to sustain the endurance requirements soccer calls for. “When spring came around I decided to do track because they didn’t make cuts and I wanted to stay in shape,” Major said of what initially attracted her to track and field. But something funny happened. Quickly, Major, a Florida native and 4.0 student, became a proficient competitive runner. In the process of that, her interest in track rose to the point of it being much more than Robin to soccer’s Batman, and it eventually

took precedence. Track was no longer just a training tool for soccer. “I actually ended up being somewhat decent at it, and I stuck with it,” said Major, who runs during indoor and outdoor. “It grew into something that’s now even more important than soccer. I’ve made a lot of sacrifices to be able to run as well as I can. I dropped from my (soccer) club team last year. It’s been a great experience in high school.” Major, a four-year varsity track and field athlete for OP, is an established 1,000-meter runner in Section VI. And this season, the senior is looking to better last year’s fourth-place showing at indoor sectionals in the event. On Jan. 17, at the Trent Jackson/Cedric Walker Invitational on the campus of SUNY Brockport, Major got an accurate gauge of where her time in the 1,000 stands as Section VI Championships loom — the meet is Feb. 20. The result was to her delight. In a crowded field that featured runners from topflight programs across mostly Sections V and VI, Major finished ninth out of 34 with a season-best time of 3:14.77. It was a touch off her personal best 3:10.05 pace that

school career. “It was definitely a confidence booster. “It’s always helpful when you’re trying to figure out where you rank in terms of your own section and other competitors from the Rochester area who are incredible at running. I want to make the most out of sectionals.” Major is a captain for the Quakers, and OP coach Greg Lardo even likens her to being a player-coach. That assessment, plus her drive to be better, speaks to the enthusiasm Major has gained for the sport. She’s dedicated herself to running. Major enjoys the team dynamic of track and field — teammates cheering each other on during events. The senior is also often at the head of the notifications BILL WENDE / SECTION6RUNS.COM on the Remind app that OP uses for pertinent team-wide messages. Senior Rami Major, right, ran a season-best She spearheaded the or3:14.77 in the 1,000-meter run on Jan. 17. dering of the team jackets, sweatpants and long-sleeved Dri-Fit shirts. track, there is credence to the selection of Major as a captain. Wherever she is, a benefit for the team follows close by. “She’s just a leader,” Lardo said. “You look to her because she’s always doing what she’s supposed to be doing. If you had 60 of her, then you probably wouldn’t need me. It’s like having another coach on the team with her. She’s always on top of it. She’s always leading some type of workout.” A highly successful student, Major, above all else, is searching for the right environmental conservation program as she narrows down her college options. She’s very much open to walking onto a track and field team wherever she lands, though. After all, Major said track has played a prominent role in achieving her grades. “School is always first for me, but track is a close second,” Major said. “I love track and I still spend a lot of time with it. Being in a sport helps with grades and time management. Track teaches you to work hard and be committed.”

Meisenheimer Quaker boys, girls bowling embraces reading improve unbeaten streaks to nine defenses “Point Guard” from page 7

Colin Herr rolled matchhigh series (267-732) to do his part in ensuring the Orchard Park boys bowling team wrapped up the division title. Herr’s big day helped propel the Quakers to a 6-1 win over defending state champion Frontier Tuesday (Jan. 27) at Brier-

wood Lanes. Not only was it OP’s second victory over the Falcons (6-3) this season, it also clinched the ECIC Large School South crown for the 9-0 Quakers with one league match to go. Meanwhile, the OP girls remained unbeaten, as well, downing Frontier, 5-2, at the same time and place. For the Quaker boys, Thomas Klenke had the match’s high game (268) to go with his 701 series while bowling for the B

team, which also got contributions from Colton Little (246-691), Troy Hattala (244-587) and Kyle Couell (199-570). Brandon Williams was right behind Herr in the A group with a 258-705 while Sam Rizzo (224-660) and Hayden Brock (189-517) also bowled on OP’s first team. The Quakers held a 5,1634,816 advantage in pins. Danielle Milo led Orchard Park’s girls team (9-0), as no one equaled her 255 high

game or 682 series. Madelyn Jensen was consistent for the Lady Quakers, too, rolling a 219-637. OP’s Paige Bartosz’s 247-628 was tops among all B bowlers while Rzepka added a 230-599 to the winning cause. Nicole Newton bowled a 203 in Game One for the Lady Quakers’ second team before stepping up with a 187 and 179 in the next two games for the A squad. Kaitlyn Kelly registered a 216-575 for the winners.

JEFFREY T. BARNES

Meisenheimer is averaging 2.8 steals per game. That development has been followed by additional obligation, which Meisenheimer embraces and takes full command of. “I love it,” the sophomore said. “I love ordering the offense. I love organizing it — trying to figure out the defense and calling the right plays. It’s difficult, but I love the challenge.” Meisenheimer is second on the team with 10.5 points per game while averaging 2.8 assists per night. While that boosts EA, Schutrum noted that there is a calm that resonates throughout the court with Meisenheimer on it. That produces more results than her individual numbers do, as good as they many be. She knows the Lady Blue Devils’ offenses and defenses thoroughly, and is aware of when Schutrum wants them run. As such, the coach-point guard communication during games has lessened from previous years. But Meisenheimer’s verbal interaction with the other four players is as often as ever. That’s led to fluency on both ends of the floor. Schutrum noted Meisenheimer knows where teammates are at all times, and she can anticipate who is going to be open on a given play. “There’s a significant difference in how we play when J is at point guard,” Schutrum said. “When she comes out (of the lineup), we’re not the same team. When we scrimmage during practice, the team that has J on it always seems to win. “You have a leadership style

where everyone can get on the same page with J. We play differently with that kind of communicator on the floor.” Meisenhemier is a winner, so there’s no secret as to why Schutrum said “At the end of the game, J is a person to go to.” That’s a byproduct of her thriving on criticism. Schutrum said Meisenheimer gets “disgusted” with herself if he gets on her case for not doing something correctly, like playing the right type of defense, and it will eat at her for days. But the next game, she’ll be EA’s top defender. “She doesn’t like being criticized, but she handles the criticism and she improves from it,” Schutrum said. “That’s really nice when you can get on her a little bit, and then see her come back with a determination to improve. You can never ask for more as a coach.” Joining varsity as an eighth grader, Meisenheimer was one of the first players off the bench. There were elements of trial by fire, which helped instill the drive that’s so evident to Schutrum today. The profits of that, in the form of her running the point at a higher efficiency rate, are on full display this season “It made me learn quickly,” Meisenheimer said. “I started getting comfortable with my role. Now I have a lot more confidence and poise. Being on varsity has helped me become a leader on offense.”

Myers, Cassiano lead team in victories heading into postseason, youth team going strong “Wrestling” from page 7 “We had every reason to give up. We’ve had so many bad things happen and it’s been so hard to win a match. They just battled. They saw that they can do better than they’ve been doing. The young guys are feeling a little bit of confidence finally.” The win, Pryce said, gives the Quakers momentum heading into the final action of the regular season. They had their last dual meet at Sweet Home Friday (Jan. 30) and they’re also competing at the Ken-Ton tournament on Saturday (Jan. 31) at Kenmore West. Pryce noted he’s believed in the young Quakers all season but it was a process to get the team to trust in its own abilities. Orchard Park’s buzz saw of an opening league schedule didn’t help with that, of course. The Quakers went against ECIC I powers Jamestown, Clarence, West Seneca West and Lancaster in four of their first five duals. Those taught some inex-

perienced wrestlers tough lessons. But the triumph over Frontier made it evident to Pryce that they were grasped. They’re becoming unafraid. “They’re learning, it’s just that they have to lose to do it,” Pryce said. “We work as hard as other teams, but sometimes it doesn’t show. These guys are starting to feel it and are saying ‘We can beat these guys.’ I’ve been telling them to believe that, but they have to believe it.” With the Quakers now feeling that success can be had, Pryce noted that has to be carried into Class AA Championships on Feb. 7 at Lancaster. Topnotch competition will be there, as it’s the qualifying tournament for Section VI Championships. Because of that, hard teachings might await some of OP’s participants. But many of the Quakers haven’t seen such a meet before. So Pryce, mindful of how promising the youthful group is, thinks

it’s a good idea for those who are eligible to attend, if only to get the initial experience out of the way. ”Some might say ‘I don’t want to go, I’ll get killed,’” Pryce said. “But they need to go because next year they’ll go and not know what it’s all about, unless you go see it this year. We have to sell them the idea that it’s their time to start moving up the ladder.” Myers (14-8) and Cassiano (14-7), as two of OP’s three seniors, will make their final bids to make sectionals at Lancaster. To be eligible for the Class AA tournament field, a wrestler must have an above .500 record in Section VI, thus making Brown (7-5) and Herr (85) candidates to compete, as well. Pryce said one of the biggest positives this season has been the resolve shown by OP. Wrestlers haven’t thought about how much more match experience an opponent might have, they’ve just constantly pushed forward.

Seeing that from a young core has been assuring to Pryce. “These kids are different than the kids we have had before,” Pryce said. “They don’t believe that they should just kneel down. I see a lot of that throughout the whole team. For all the kids we have coming back, I think they looked around and said ‘We can be a good team if we just stick together.’” ••• The Quaker Youth Wrestling Club, which is co-run by Pryce, found success at a tournament it recently attended at Lewiston-Porter. The club, offered to kids in the district aged between kindergarten and sixth grade, had a trio of members place there, with two taking third and the other finishing in second. “We have kids going to tournaments, and we haven’t had that in a while,” Pryce said. “We have kind of a larger club than we’ve ever had. I’m really hoping that sticks.”

Rod, Gun & Game: Super Bowl Sunday — time for venison nachos, walleye tacos By Forrest Fisher

This is a great time to relish the satisfaction of delicious meals that can result from the successful sportsmen pursuits of hunting wild game and fishing. There is something very special about the culinary delights that connect us to conservation practices, the purity of organic food from wild harvest, and the reality of incredible taste from this healthy food source. Great tasting healthy food helps to justify the cost of the license and gear, and all the time we spend learning about how to be successful. A few years ago, my family started looking around for proven recipes that would provide even more range on how we prepare our wild bounty from the lands and the lakes around us. We discovered the “Wild Harvest Table” from Cornell Cooperative Extension nutrition educator Moira M. Tidball, a culinary aficionado who enjoys cooking all kinds of wild game and offers free, proven advice. The result has been delicious and nutritious! For Super Bowl weekend, we are preparing two of Tidball’s crowd-pleasing recipes that have become our favorites: venison nachos and walleye tacos. Sounds awesome, right?! Let me share with you that there is never any leftovers from either recipe. For the Venison nachos, health consumers today all ap-

preciate that using the venison instead of beef lowers the fat content of typical nacho recipes. This recipe is quite simple, even I am able to succeed in the kitchen with it. In a stock pot, add one tablespoon of olive oil and brown the venison over medium-high heat. Add one medium to large chopped white sweet onion and cook 3-5 minutes more until the onion is translucent. Add 2-3 cloves of minced garlic and 2-3 tablespoons of chili powder, cook another minute (don’t let the garlic get brown). At this point, adding one teaspoon of oregano and one teaspoon of cumin is optional, if you like those flavors (I do). Then add one tablespoon of brown sugar and one 28-ounce can of diced tomatoes (or one quart of home canned tomatoes) and gently stir the entire mix in the pan. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, once there, lower the heat and simmer the chili about half an hour until it thickens and starts to smell “so good!” Then add one 15-ounce can of red kidney beans or black beans, your choice, but drain and rinse before adding. Then cook until heated through and the consistency is thick. Season to taste with salt and pepper. We then pour the mix into a wide baking dish, sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the top and place it in the oven preheated to 400 degrees. Heat some tortilla chips in the oven at the same time. Remove when the cheese melts (about six minutes or so). Spoon some of the mix

This recipe makes six to eight 1-cup servings. Nutritionally, a 1-cup serving is about 360 calories, offers 25 percent of daily adult needs for Vitamin A and Calcium, 30 percent for Vitamin C and 20 percent for iron, with 24 grams of protein! The walleye tacos are even easier. Ingredients you’ll need include one pound of boneless, skinless, walleye fillets with the blood vein removed, 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil,

2 tablespoons of lime juice (juice from one large lime), ½ tablespoon of chili powder, ½ teaspoon cumin powder, ½ teaspoon dried oregano, ¼ cup fresh cilantro (chopped), 1 small jalapeno (diced) and ¼ cup of red onion (diced), with a dash of salt and pepper to your taste. Mix up a marinade of the olive oil, lime juice, chili powder, cumin, oregano, cilantro, jalapeno, red onion, salt and pepper in a baking dish large enough to also hold the fish. Add the fish fillets and spoon the marinade on top to coat

the fish. Cover and move to the ‘frig for 1 hour, then turn the fillets over and stand in the ‘frig for one more hour. Remove the fish and cook in a sauté pan for about four minutes, then flip and cook for two more minutes or until the fish is opaque and flakes easily with a fork. Remove from the pan and coarsely chop the fish. To serve, spoon about ½ cup of fish into the center of a warmed corn or four tortilla, add some sour cream, some shredded lettuce or cabbage or coleslaw and some salsa. Fold or wrap the tortilla so it can be picked up easily and enjoy. This recipe makes about four servings of three ounces each, about 170 calories, only 2 grams of carbohydrates, 1.5 grams of fat and 22 grams of protein. How to Stay Warm in Winter Word of advice from those in the know are usually helpful to folks who can never seem to stay warm in winter. When you head out into cold or wet weather, you must try to avoid wearing cotton clothing. Cotton absorbs your sweat and human moisture, insulates poorly and dries very slowly, helping to keep you cold! In-

stead, wear a base layer made from merino wool to wick moisture away and keep you dry (try merino wool socks too), then add an insulating layer such as fleece or down, and top with a waterproof or breathable shell. You will always be toasty warm in the winter outdoors. Good luck! WSRC brings Christmas to family in need HarborCenter to host West Side Rowing Club (WSRC) continues to support its community through philanthropic efforts, most recently with the Mothers of Alumni Rowers (M.O.A.R.s) group, bringing Christmas to a St. Patrick’s Friary family-in-need with gifts and a special holiday meal. M.O.A.R.s began in 2012 to continue the kinship among WSRC rowing families whose athletes had graduated. Once a month, the group gets together and has an outing, including each year’s seniors’ mothers to continue as volunteers at the Club. This past year for their December philanthropy, the group voted to sponsor a family-in-need for the Christmas holidays. One of M.O.A.R.s founding members, Maryalice Victor, and her mother, Kathie Brinkworth, have been actively involved with the St. Patrick’s

Friary Pantry for many year. “The group jumped at the chance to sponsor a family for the holidays,” Victor said. The donations provided for a Christmas to remember for the family, with presents for each of the six family members and a special holiday dinner. The St. Patrick’s Friary is run by coordinator, Monica Kwiatkowski, and her assistant, Jim Dudziak, under the direction of the Franciscan Friars. For many years, the Pantry has provided support for numerous area families. While delivering the group’s donations, Victor and member Barbara Johnson discovered one of the Pantry volunteers, Betsy Broderick Kurzdorfer, is the great niece of Michael Broderick, the second (and longest serving President) of the West Side Rowing Club. Kurzdorfer’s father, Thomas, was the son of Joseph Broderick,

Michael Broderick’s brother. Broderick’s WSRC legacy includes rowing the first 8-person shell in Buffalo, managing the United States Rowing Team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, being only the second American to receive a lifetime membership in the Canadian RowingAssociation, being enshrined at the National Rowing Hall of Fame in 1983, and having the Broderick Plate named after him, the most prestigious annual award distributed by WSRC. In the future, M.O.A.R.s intends to sponsor the WSRC “Boat of Hope,” using an old rowing shell to hold donations for area families in need. The hope is that current rowers and families will have an opportunity to participate with M.O.A.R.s, as well as be able to sponsor several additional families through holiday gifts

for each family member and a special family Christmas dinner. About the West Side Rowing Club: The West Side Rowing Club was founded in 1912 with a mission to promote the advancement of the physical, mental, and moral well being of the youth in Buffalo and the surrounding areas. Since 1921, West Side has hosted high school teams. Throughout its 102 years, West Side has won countless national and international championship events, having sent over 30 athletes to represent the United States at the Olympic Games and Elite World Championships, and advanced hundreds of youth athletes to top collegiate schools and rowing programs across North America.

Orchard Park fifth graders graduate DARE program Eggert and Ellicott Elementary fifth grade students graduated from the 13-week DARE program on Thursday, Jan. 22 and Friday, Jan. 23. The students spent the program meeting with Orchard Park Police Officers Kristen Mazur and Brian Lukowski learning and discussing ways to appropriately make decisions that could affect their lives. The fifth grade students were so excited to be graduating from DARE and to share the information they learned. Two students were chosen from each of the classes to recite their DARE essays. All of the students that spoke proudly displayed the information that they had learned including the DARE decisionmaking model and different side effects that could come from making bad decisions especially regarding drugs and alcohol. The ceremonies each had different speakers, Middle School Principal David Lilleck spoke at the Eggert graduation ceremony and Erie County Legislature John Mills spoke at the Ellicott graduation ceremony. Throughout this character building program students learn the DARE decision making model which helps them think through the decision making process. This process gives students an opportunity to fully process and understand the choice they are making before they respond. The final step is to evaluate their choice which lets them see the decision they made and determine if it was the right decision. The program benefits students in so many ways. It is not just about saying “no to drugs and alcohol. The program focuses on decision making and how to communicate your decisions. Communicating the decision is key. Many students know when a decision is wrong, but telling your friends that I don’t want to do that because it’s wrong isn’t easy. The DARE

program lets students practice handling these types of situations so when the students have to make a decision like this in their own lives they have the confidence needed to be successful in doing the right thing. Students at both Eggert and Ellicott graduated the DARE program along with students at Nativity and St. John Vianney. The Orchard Park DARE program has graduated approximately 14,000 students since its inception. Orchard Park DARE officers continuously work in order to complete the DARE mission of “Teaching students good decision making skills to help them lead safe and healthy lives.

You may have noticed several billboards throughout the Buffalo metropolitan area introducing Sampson to his hometown, along with featured articles in all of CPOWNY’s community newspapers. Sampson also graced the cover of WNY Health’s January 2015 edition. Our goal is to bring

Puppy Missy needs a home Meet Missy! She is available for adoption through HEART Animal Rescue & Adoption Team. Missy is 6 months old. She is spayed, micro-chipped and current on vaccinations. She is very close to being completely house broken and kennel trained. Missy and her littermates were born in a shelter, but within hours of their birth they were moved with their mom to a foster home. Missy stayed with her littermates and mom until she was 6 weeks old then she moved into another foster home. She is the last one from her litter to be adopted. She is trying to be patient but she is getting nervous that no one

will ever want her. Missy is very smart, very trainable and eager to please. She has been living with another puppy her age, two other dogs, a cat and a toddler - all of which she interacts with very well. If you are interested in adopting Missy, please contact a HEART representative at 821-1915 or email peachyshell113@yahoo.com Also, please join us at HEART’s 3rd annual SweetHEART Cocktail Party on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 7 10 p.m. at Samuel’s Grande Manor located at 8750 Main St. in Williamsville. Tickets are available on our website at www.heartforanimals.org or by calling 225-1183. Before

Republican Committee endorses candidates On Jan. 24, the Orchard Park Republican Committee met to endorse candidates for the 2015 Village Election. The Committee, composed of the elected representatives of registered Republicans from each of the 21 Election Districts in Orchard Park, endorsed a slate of candidates based on qualifications, integrity, and proven records of outstanding performance in public office. Village Trustee Jo Ann Litwin-Clinton, was endorsed to head the team as the candidate for mayor. Former trustee and recent Interim Mayor David A. Rood was endorsed as a candidate for one of two village trustee seats to be filled in March. Now a trustee, Matthew J. Hartung from the Village Planning Board was selected for the second seat. Judge Daniel Kane was endorsed for an additional term. The Village Election will take place March 18 and each of the candidates, except mayor, will be seeking a four year

The election for mayor will be for the two remaining years of the four-year term left open by the recent, sudden and untimely passing of Mayor John Wilson. The next step in the process of moving toward the Election will be Party Caucuses, open to all registered voters who live in the village and are

members of the political parties that schedule such meetings. In the caucuses, rank and file members of these parties meet to finalize candidate selection. For the upcoming Village Election, the Republican and the Conservative Parties have filed to hold these open meetings.

OPHS Drama Club preps for Anything Goes By Mike Baggerman ORCHARD PARK SUN CONTRIBUTOR

Orchard Park High School and its award-winning Drama Club will be presenting the musical this spring. The award-winning drama club will put on the performance from March 1215 inside the auditorium at Orchard Park High School. The romantic-comedy was originally created in the 1930s and is set on a boat sailing from New York to England. Or as Maria Szczepanik, Director of Show, puts it, “Hilarity on a boat”. Expectations are high for the students for the annual fall play. Last spring, the drama club showcased the popular French drama and won the 2014 Kenny Award for “Best High School Musical in Western New York” at Shea’s Performing Art Center. “The kids always rise to the occasion,” Szczepanik said. “We don’t just do a high school show. Our shows are very professionally done. Our costumes are always period costumes, not pulled from someone’s closet. Our set designer is, by trade, an interior designer, so our sets are comparable to anything you’d see in any professional theater.” The featured character in the musical is the protagonist, Billy Crocker, a Wall Street broker attempting to win back his love, who is sailing

Students rehearse a scene from Anything Goes, which will be performed from Thursday, March 12 to Sunday, March 15. to England to get married. Crocker runs into oddball characters over the course of the musical including Reno Sweeney, a former evangelist turned famous nightclub singer; Moonface Martin, an ambitious gangster known by his alias “Public Enemy #13;” Moonface Martin’s girlfriend Bonnie; and more. “I’m really excited, because I love the show,” said junior Cameron Farrell, who will portray Billy Crocker. “I’ve always been listening to theater at home and this was always a big show my dad made me listen to. I’ve always wanted to do this show and be this character.” “It’s going to be a huge challenge for me,” said senior Caroline Schettler, who

plays the Reno Sweeney role and is also the Drama Club president. “Reno is a female power. She is very feminine but very powerful.” The spring musical features a cast of roughly 50-55 students, a student orchestra, and backstage personnel also run by students ranging from freshmen to seniors. “Just have fun,” said senior Erin Sixt, on her advice to nervous underclassmen. “A lot of (what we do here) is help direct what’s going on. We’re all here for you. I’m always trying to work with everyone else to make sure they know (their role).” Funding for the play comes entirely from the students. The students solicit advertisements from local businesses

which are featured in the program and money is generated through ticket sales. “The production costs anywhere from $15,000 to $20,000,” Szczepanik said. “All the money is raised by the kids. We are a self-funding group and it gives the kids ownership in their own show. They’re proud of it.” Tickets for will be available during the last week of February and will cost $12 for floor seats and $10 for balcony seats. Senior citizens with a gold card can pay half the price for the respective seating. The first three days of the show will begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday’s final showing will be at 2:30 p.m.

Hubbard Film Society to screen The Lunchbox This month, The Hubbard Film Society presents the 2013 film from India, The Lunchbox. It is a beautiful, funny, touching film about two lonely people who begin an expected relationship via letters. One day an office worker receives the wrong tiffin, or lunch box, through Mumbai’s elaborate lunch delivery system. The lunch has been lovingly prepared by a lonely housewife for her indifferent husband. The office worker discovers the mix up and returns the box with a note. Thus begins their friendship. This is a wonderful movie for foodies or romantics, and in Jeff Simon’s review, he gave it 3.5 starts (out of 4). The male lead, Irffan Khan, may be familiar to American audiences from his roles in “The Namesake” and “The Life of Pi.” “The Lunchbox” will be shown on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. at the Parkdale Auditorium, 141 Girard Ave. Please join us, and stay for the post-film discussion. Our restaurant partner this month will be 189 Public House. Coupons for a discount at the restaurant will be handed out at the film, with hopes you and your party can make it a “dinner and a movie” event. We thank Katie, John and their staff for sup-
