Quakers generate intrasquad competition in effort to increase focus, preparation By Aaron Garland SPORTS REPORTER
There is change coming to the Orchard Park boys Federation hockey team. Coach Derek Gilham said it was needed because there were points of underachievement last season. It’s an assessment, Gilham said, that OP’s 12 holdovers all agree with. The hopeful solution, thus the theme for the 2014-15 Quakers, is intrasquad competition. The thought is that constantly fighting for desirable spots and playing time will keep the team focused and prepared for every game. OP sports 14 forwards, which contrasts with Gilham normally keeping 10-12. The JEFFREY T. While the forward lines can be shifted at any time, Gilham said Schiffman is likely to team with sophomores Mitch Streety and Zachary Biasillo on the top line. Gilham describes Schiffman as a big, strong kid who is the most skilled forward. The other two, meanwhile, are entering their second seasons after strong freshmen years — Biasillo had six goals and seven assists, good for the fifth-most points on the team.

Lodowski leads Janca enjoys standout sophomore year Blue Devils on way to CPOWNY honors By Aaron Garland SPORTS REPORTER
Dylan Lodowski felt honored to be on the inaugural East Aurora/Holland football team in 2013. He was a reserve running back, really only seeing time on special teams. Still, Lodowski was part of history, as he and four other Holland students became the first from the school to ever play varsity
football. But this year, after putting on 30 pounds in the offseason, a byproduct of hitting the weight room six days a week, Lodowski switched to linebacker. It was a foreign position to him. He didn’t even play it during his time in Little Loop. However, with him now standing around 5-foot-8, 170 pounds, Lodowski began 2014 as a backup. The senior saw a few series in a seasonopening loss Amherst, but nothing extensive.

Orchard Park football coach Gene Tundo doesn’t see a whole lot restricting Dillon Janca. That includes the Quakers’offense, which was complex and diverse in 2014, despite Janca being a sophomore and varsity rookie. But it’s Janca’s devotion, his push for greatness that gave him keys to the Porsche, or OP’s fast-paced, elaborate offense. “His goal is to be a state champion and the best quarterback in the state,” Tundo said. “I think it’s hard to hold back somebody with that much vision and desire

to succeed. He loves the game.” Janca wasn’t eased into the varsity game because, well, he didn’t have to be. He was ready from the start, throwing for 225 yards and three touchdowns in his debut, a 72-22 Quaker win over Frontier. The scoring brigade Janca led continued all the way to him being named CPOWNY’s Newcomer of the Year at the end of the season. Janca assumed a lot of responsibility on a team that had passing and offense at its core. The sophomore worked with the coaching staff and players last offseason to learn the playbook. It allowed the Quakers to enter their prime in Week One, as they went on to go 8-2, losing in the Section VI Class AA finals to Jamestown.

Orchard Park’s Ernst takes 2nd straight state title, Atendido paces East Aurora While Western New York was left in the aftermath of record snowfall, the Orchard Park girls swimming and diving team brought a storm of success to Ithaca College. The Quakers traveled there for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships Friday and Saturday (Nov. 21
and 22), taking third in the team standings (172 points). Topping the highlights for OP, which was represented in seven events, was Andrea Ernst, who successfully defended her 2013 state title in the 100 free, racing to the same winning time as last year (50.88 seconds). The junior also claimed second in
the 50 free (23.41 seconds). Senior Morgan Wellenzohn, as an encore to her third-place finish at states a year ago, nabbed fourth this time around. She compiled a school record 506.30 points in her 11 dives. Sophomore Olivia Sapio landed 10th in the 200 IM (2:08.77) while registering an
11th-place showing in the 100 backstroke (58.18 seconds). The relays are where the Quakers demonstrated their team prowess most. Senior Hannah Rauch and sophomore Katrina Wardner joined Sapio and Ernst to form the 200 free relay and 400 free relay squads that each placed second.
The 200 free relay quartet raced to a time of 1:37.36 while the 400 free relay group swam the event in 3:33.14. Meanwhile, junior Sydney Atendido was the top finisher for East Aurora at states. She was eighth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.46. EA’s 200 medley relay squad of Atendido, freshmen
Shelby MacSwan and Emma Brinker and sophomore Mary Zagrobelny claimed 22nd (1:52.12). Brinker, MacSwan, Atendido and freshman Mary Dunbar also teamed in the 200 free relay, taking 46th by swimming a 1:43.18. Individually, MacSwan was 35th in the 100 fly (1:00.02).

Sophomore Troy Banks returns to the Quakers’ lineup this season. Junior assistant captains Jeff Palczewski and Kevin McParlane, along with senior Rob Zwirecki (seven goals, three assists a year ago), are veteran candidates to see consistent top-six minutes. Sophomore Troy Banks is also back up top after a four-point freshman campaign. Tyler Bienas and Kevin Carney saw three games apiece as alternates in 2013-14, and they are expected to vie for time at forward. So is senior Artie Owens, who did a lot of scoring on the JV Fed team last season. “There are a lot of guys on the same level — no superstars, so anybody can take anybody’s position at any time,” Schiffman said. “That makes it better because everyone works harder then.” Assistant captain TJ Maloney, a junior, leads an experienced defense
despite All-Federation Large Schools honoree Tim Duffy (14 assists) a n d Ry a n M a c c a r r i c k (16 assists) graduating. Fellow returners senior Jason Carey and juniors Clayton Galas and Matt Rindfleisch join Maloney on the blue line. They’ll be see a majority of the ice time in the back, and with the forwards being a fast bunch, Gilham said the “D” just needs to keep it simple — move the puck up smartly and quickly. Much like the forwards, there is a battle for the net between a pair of newcomers. Senior Kyle Fallon comes over from the varsity club team while sophomore Tom Held played JV Fed in 2013-14. OP’s lineup team could look much different opening night than it does once playoffs hit.
But that doesn’t matter to Gilham right now. He wants his players to worry about the next game up on the schedule. If they do, it could make a few tough decisions for Gilham down the road. Just how he prefers it. “I told them from Day One ‘We’re not looking to February at all,’” Gilham said. “We have four months. We’re going to take it day-by-day and we’re going to get better every day. I told them ‘I have four months who decides who plays that (playoff) game, and so do you.’ We’re going to work on a regular season that is productive where we’re getting better every day.” The Quakers take on Frontier in a league matchup at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Dec. 5) at Leisure Rinks to kick things off. “We worked in the offseason, all winter long,” Janca said. “I kind of got used to the offense then. Once camp did start, that’s when I took on the leadership role. By the time the first game started I think I was in control. It didn’t take long because I have been playing with the older kids most of my life, so it was second nature to me.” The numbers are gaudy for any high school offense. OP scored 38.8 points per game while registering 396.7 yards per contest. The way in which the Quakers compiled much of that, however, is central to them and only a few other area schools. They passed on nearly 53 percent of their 591 offensive plays. That’s a ratio more reminiscent of a pro offense than a high school one. But OP had the personnel — with Janca being the main component — to operate like that, and they did so at a nearly unmatched level in the area. Janca’s 2,109 yards and 25 touchdowns — going 162 for 309 in the process — are more astounding figures when considering how they were reached. OP features a bevy of calls named “RPOs,” or run-pass option. On them, there is a pass play and a run play starting simultaneously at the snap. It is up to Janca to read the defense and carry out what he deems to be the more promising play based on the opposition’s alignment. Sometimes there are three options. “I’m standing back there thinking ‘Holy cow,’” Tundo said. “It’s easier to coach than it is to actually do.” But Janca, who worked with Quakers offensive coordinator Chuck Senn at great length this season, handled a thorough offense maturely, Tundo said. He distributed the ball well — six guys had at least 14 receptions — while computing an abundance of information. That included affording Janca the freedom to check into and out of plays by the midway point of the season. Tundo said he has dabbled into pieces of what the offense is today in the last few years. But assembling all of them together to form 2014’s compound look was a first, and a credit to the trust in Janca.
“I study a lot and read defenses a lot,” Janca said of the cerebral aspect of the game. “Being able to call different plays at the line and make audibles and just know what’s going on is great. It gives you a big advantage and it’s a big part of the game. I love being able to do that.” Football is ever evolving, and OP was able to stay ahead of teams by running an advanced offense. It’s a trickle-down from the increasingly pass-happy NFL. “There are a lot of things happening in present-day football,” Tundo said. “It gets bigger and bigger, and Dillon has a lot on his plate. Teams are disguising their coverages and it’s like a game of hide-and-seek. You kind of have to bait the defense into showing their hand. “Doing what he did was remarkable. I’m just hoping we can grow on that and keep getting better.” This all isn’t a tremendous surprise, though. Janca’s father and two older brothers, David and Derek, all have quarterback pasts. Dillon Janca was just born into it, and has been under center since he was 7 years old in Orchard Park Little Loop. Ever since, Janca has done everything he could to get better. He’s attended national camps, including the Manning Passing Academy — which features premier instruction from the Mannings, along with past and present coaches and players from the NFL and NCAA — in July and the last three
years he’s been a participant at another renowned camp, Football University. Janca also has a personal coach in Jim Kubiak, the St. Francis graduate and former NFL quarterback. The two are set for their fourth offseason working together. The outside work has had Janca flying above the curve for some time even though he has aged up since seventh grade, when he was on the freshman squad. He stayed there as an eighth grader before moving up to quarterback an undefeated JV team in in 2013. Once again, in 2014, Janca thrived as one of the youngest players on the field. Janca was intercepted 16 times, but he did air it out over 30 times a game, and is still just a sophomore. Those mistakes are forgiven when they’re rebounded by averaging over 210 passing yards and two scoring throws per game. If that’s a rookie year, maybe there really isn’t anything holding Janca back. One thing’s for sure — he’ll be thinking forward the next nine months. “Our first goal is to win a sectional championship and the next one would be a state championship,” Janca said. “It’s definitely something I want to bring back to Orchard Park. I’m going to do as much as I can this offseason so that we can hopefully bring it back next year.” Twitter: @Garland_SUN

Janca helped OP to a sectional finals appearance at Ralph Wilson Stadium this season.
Lodowski led team with 104 tackles “Lodowski” from page B1 Lodowski would finally get his shot the next week after starter Max Heimburg went down with a season-ending injury. Fortunate for the Blue Devils, they had a hidden gem waiting on the sidelines. Lodowski hopped into that outside linebacker role in Week Two against Pioneer and grabbed a forceful hold of it. He was not just some replacement — he grew into a star on a staunch, stingy defense that surrendered just 8.8 points per game. Lodowski’s team-high 104 tackles went a long way in EA/Holland (5-3, 5-1 Class B South) winning a division
title, and it made him an AllCPOWNY first team selection. “It’s two different worlds,” Lodowski said of going from a 140-pound tailback to a dependable starting linebacker. “It’s completely different. Last year was an honor to just be part of the team, and this year was an honor to get playing time and to win the division. It was an honor to be a part of that system, and to contribute to it. I felt I actually contributed to the team.” To say Lodowski contributed might be underselling it. PA announcers probably could have saved some breath
during a few games by just telling those in attendance to assume Lodowski was in on any EA/Holland tackle. In five of the seven contests he saw regular playing time, Lodowski made at least 14 stops. His season-high was 19 versus Springville Week Six. That’s Lodowski’s game. It’s predicated on tackling. That’s why he got bigger and stronger last offseason and switched from offense to defense. “I like to tackle people,” Lodowski said. He’s sure good at it. Lodowski is a definite sure-tackler — you don’t compile over 100 of them
if you’re not. “That’s all I’m good at,” Lodowski said. “I can’t catch, I can’t run. Basically, I can hit a guy in front of me and tackle people.” The high tackle numbers speak to Lodowski’s positioning and form. He was able to excel in those areas to the point of being inescapable to anyone who carried the ball. Lodowski made sure of that when he stepped into the starting lineup. Those countless hours pumping iron, the almost nightly film sessions, the mentality to improve slightly each day, he wanted to ensure the
worth of each of those things. “The first game I came in against Pioneer I told myself ‘This is your shot. Take this spot as your own now. You own this position. Show why you should have been starting here to begin with.’ “I worked very hard to get where I was. I was able to adapt, and blossom into the player I turned out to be.” While there were other teammates who got a bulk of the sacks, fumble recoveries, interceptions and touchdowns, Lodowski just worried about his job, which was not missing the tackle. And he rarely did.
Lodowski said the Blue Devils’ defensive system was set up to where when everyone executed their small tasks on a given play, big outcome would follow. Lodowski turned out to be a sound plug in the “D.” “If everyone on the unit did their job, we would reap the rewards,” Lodowski said. “It took a lot of discipline, but that was the whole point of it. We were smart, we played with our heads — we outsmarted offenses. Our system worked. We all did our jobs and it played out well for us.” Twitter: @Garland_SUN

Daemen College opening state-of-the-art visual effects facility Marking an important milestone in a Buffalo Billion project targeting Western New York’s emerging film and television postproduction industry, a newly completed nearly $2 million state-of-the-art visual effects facility will be officially unveiled by Daemen College at a ribboncutting ceremony scheduled for Dec. 5. The celebration will take place at 10 a.m. in the Daemen International Center for Excellence in Animation located in the Tri Main Center at 2495 Main St. in Buffalo. Daemen President Gary A. Olson, members of the Daemen community and dignitaries are expected to be in attendance. An open house for the community is also planned from 2 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 6. The recently finished high-tech facility is the result of a year-long project launched with the formation of a college-business partnership between Daemen and Empire Visual Effects, a new post-production and animation company. The venture was funded by a $4.5 million Buffalo Billion grant, including $1.9 million to Daemen that was instrumental in outfitting the facility with the advanced equipment and spaces relevant to sophisticated visual effects work. With this support, it also helped create Daemen’s four-month visual effects certificate program that educates students on postproduction work in the film industry. Offered through the college’s department of visual and performing arts, the program serves as a professional pipeline to new jobs. “With the new facility fully completed, it provides a rich environment for learning, training and business growth in the visual effects sector, making it mutually beneficial to our students and to Empire Visual Effects,” Olson said. “The region stands to gain from this unique collaborative effort that will fill a niche in a cuttingedge business and lead to job opportunities that are available right now.”
The almost 16,000-square-foot facility houses a new 85-seat theater and screening room, equipped with highdefinition and 3D projection capabilities, surround sound and a color editing suite. It is also home to a 20-student cutting-edge visual effects training studio, a green screen stage for an array of film and video production projects, and classroom and office spaces. Dr. Michael Brogan, Daemen vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, cited the positive educational aspects of having the program’s learning community centralized at the site of Empire Visual Effects. “Being exposed daily to this type of innovative environment creates a more robust educational

setting that’s substantially beneficial to visual effects students as they develop highly specialized skills while also connecting them to professional opportunities in a growing industry in our area,” he said. In addition to serving as an educational-business setting, the new enhanced facility is well suited for showcasing student work and special industry presentations. “In the end,” said Dr. Laura Watts Sommer, director of the Daemen Visual and Performing Arts Department, “students with career aspirations in the visual effects field will find Daemen’s program and high-quality technologies are designed to immerse and educate them in ways that will bolster their success in the industry.”

@EA makes Small Business Saturday Huge in East Aurora
The @EA Small Business Group announced its endorsement of and participation in the fourth annual Small Business Saturday on Nov. 29. Created by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses nationwide. Celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the day has given small businesses across the country a huge boost and marks the kick off to the holiday shopping season. Recognizing the importance of supporting other small independently-owned businesses in our community, the @EA small business group was created in 2013 to promote tourism in East Aurora, network and, as local business owners, give back to the community. The group has worked together in the creation of their own marketing campaign highlighted with the tag line “Livin’ Local.” Small Business Saturday is the most recent of their joint efforts. From giveaways, holiday sales, costumed characters and restaurant specials, the
East Aurora shopping district has used this focused effort to create a very special day for making great family memories. “ Small Business Saturday has given our business a huge kick-off to the holiday season,” comments Wendy Egloff, Owner of Firefly Cupcakes and coordinator of the East Aurora Small Business Saturday Initiative. “All our local, independently owned businesses are jumped at the opportunity to be a part of this growing national campaign.” In addition to joining together for Small Business Saturday, many of the East Aurora businesses are keeping their shops closed on Thanksgiving to allow both themselves and their employees The greater WNY area is encouraged to visit and help make @EA’s Small Business Saturday huge. Meibohm Fine Arts reschedules ‘Etchings, Drawings and Friends’ exhibit By Christopher Treacy ORCHARD PARK SUN CONTRIBUTOR
When Grace Meibohm called to discuss the exhibit opening at her gallery this weekend, she was still reeling from the snow storm. “We lost an entire week,” she said, marveling at the ongoing repercussions throughout the southtowns. “I’ve actually never had to postpone an exhibit opening like this before, but I guess there’s a first for everything.” Opening this Saturday, Nov. 29, rather than last, Meibohm Fine Arts is hosting “Etchings, Drawings and Friends,” an exhibit focused on the work of Niels Yde Anderson, who lived from 1888 to 1952. The opening reception begins at 10 a.m., runs until 5 p.m. and the hanging itself will remain up for viewing through Saturday, Dec. 27. “I think what’s most intriguing about these vintage prints is in the fact that they depict the industrial heyday of the 1930s and 1940s, especially the images of the men working in the steel mills,” she said. Although Anderson was born and raised in Denmark, he became a student of architecture and engineering. His ensuing career found him employed by a company overseas

An etching work by Niels Yde Anderson titled “Full Dinner Pails” to be displayed at Meibohm Fine Arts Saturday, Nov. 29 to Saturday, Dec. 27. that had an affiliation with Buffalo’s American Radiator Company, landing him here in 1912. He continued working in steel manufacturing and went on to design “blast furnaces” for the industry. Two major life events in 1931 cemented Anderson’s spot in the history books. He traveled to Moscow and took part in building what was the world’s largest steel plant of the time, and he also became a member of the recently minted Buffalo Print Club. “The Buffalo Print Club was a really unique collection of extremely talented artists which were the subject of a tremendous exhibit at the Burchfield in 1988,” Mei-
bohm said. “Printing - etchings and lithographs - was their primary medium, and Niels was part of the trio that comprised the main printers in the group, which was active from 1931 to 1962.” Meibohm is excited about the historical value of the exhibit and thinks the timing is particularly good given Buffalo’s recent spirit of renewal. The current mixture of urban renaissance and ongoing preservation efforts have rekindled interest in the city’s architectural history; as people look forward, they also enjoy looking back. “These images depict the industrial quality of that time in the city and some of our
grandest buildings,” she said. “City Hall was newly built, and it’s interesting to see tenement houses in the shadow of City Hall. One of the depictions of City Hall is rendered by three different artists, all etchings, from very similar vantage points - and yet each one has its own flavor.” “Etchings, Drawings and Friends” is comprised of 49 works, featuring Anderson and fellow Buffalo Print Club members William J. Schwanekamp and Jean V. MacKay Henrich as well as club President Kevin B. O’Callahan. Meibohm Fine Arts is located at 478 Main Street in East Aurora.
